The Vintage Hammer

It’s Not Just a Store, It’s an Experience

When it comes to shopping in the Village of Hampshire, no trip is complete without stopping in at The Vintage Hammer, where home décor, unique gifts, and reimagined furnishings take center stage.

The Vintage Hammer is owned and operated by a husband-andwife team of Christine Klein and Boom Blakz (a DJ by trade), who have a passion for repurposing and revitalizing furniture and unique home décor.

The Vintage Hammer is more than just a gift shop/furniture store. It is a lifestyle store where your home décor ideas come to life.

“A lifestyle store is a retail store selling a wide variety of product

categories under a single brand. We sell home décor, gifts, and repurposed furniture,” says Klein.

“We specialize in refinishing furniture – either painting or staining to bring furniture into today’s style and trends.”

Klein met and married Boom while she was living and working in Jamaica a number of years ago. The couple started using their creative talents in Jamaica where home furnishings and décor are very difficult to come by and very expensive.

“Instead of spending large amounts of money on imported furniture and décor, we used the resources we had that were free or from the land and transformed them to work in our home,” Klein said.

The couple moved back to the

U.S. in 2016 and started building and refinishing furniture in their garage in Hampshire for their friends and family.

“As we started to get quite a following from social media posts and word of mouth, more people asked us to make and refinish things for them.”

Their business began to grow, and the couple started selling their wares at area outdoor markets and vintage fairs. When the couple decided to open a brick-and-mortar store, it made sense to stay in Hampshire, Klein’s hometown.

“We knew we wanted to stay in the area, and it is very rewarding to know that we are helping to build the business community in Hampshire.”

The items the couple acquires

come from a wide variety of places including dumpster diving, farm auctions, estate sales and word of mouth.

“Boom does most of the curating and he has now created quite a little niche of his own,” Klein said. Klein listens to her inspiration and instinct when it comes to furniture and repurposing their inventory.

“We have a lot – I mean a lot – of furniture,” says Klein. “We have a warehouse and a storage unit full of furniture. We don’t bring it to the store unless we have a vision for it. Then, we’ll repurpose it and put it out in the store for sale.”

Many times, customers share their visions with Boom and Klein, and often they have the perfect piece in storage that will

8 n HAMPSHIRE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

work for the customer. The duo has a unique flow to their décor and furnishing aesthetic. Klein often goes for trendier styles while her husband gravitates toward bright, vibrant colors.

“I select items for the store based on what I know will sell, sticking with current decorating and color trends,” Klein said. “My husband tends to go with his heart way more than I do when it comes to decorating. Jamaica is all about big, bold colors and eclectic styles. You can see that in the things that he does rather than the things that I do.”

Not only is The Vintage Hammer a wonderful place to shop and be inspired, but they offer a wide variety of classes and workshops.

“What most people don’t know is all the services we offer,” Klein said.

The Vintage Hammer offers custom furniture painting, décor consultation, furniture painting classes, custom built furniture pieces, a rentable workshop space and they do community events as well.

“In May, we host a street fair where we bring in local artisans and we close the street in front of the store and have a really fun festival with music, food and drink offerings and more. There is a lot of talent in our community that isn’t necessarily

exposed to the public very often,” she said.

Every month, Klein offers furniture painting classes where she teaches all the steps to reimagining your own small furniture piece and encourages community togetherness.

“We have a lot of fun and laugh a lot. The participants go home with a freshly painted piece of furniture,” she said.

They also offer monthly seasonal décor-making classes, and mini seminars based around décor and decorating trends.

Repurposing and recycling home décor and furnishings is a sustainable practice that the couple is passionate about.

“We as a society are becoming more environmentally conscious and people are looking to reuse, recycle and repurpose anything they can. We piggyback on that mindset to find things that are styled for today’s trends,” Klein said.

Klein believes the repurposing trend became as popular as it is now because of COVID-19.

“Supply chain issues were a problem, so inventories were low, and prices skyrocketed. People didn’t want to wait for a lot of things, so I think sustainability got a huge push from COVID.”

As a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Klein finds her involvement is helpful for marketing the store while continuing to support her hometown community.

“We have always been a big supporter and believer in the Chamber of Commerce,” says Klein. “Getting the word out about a new business is difficult, but having the marketing avenues available through the Chamber is crucial to a business’s success today.”

Stop in at The Vintage Hammer for that perfect gift or let them help redesign your spaces.

urlington marked its beginnings with a tavern in 1840, a post office in 1846, a general store in 1847 and was incorporated in 1906. It is a small town with a rural heart and a welcoming spirit where residents know each other and say “hello” when they pass. The area has great schools, abundant natural space, and a friendly atmosphere that makes it a great place to raise a family.

There is almost always something to do in Burlington. Our parks, restaurants, active civic groups, and community events provide an array of activities that include an annual Fireworks display in July and the Fall Fest in September.

Throughout its history, Burlington’s leaders have made smart choices that have enabled the Village to provide important public services while keeping financial liabilities low and preserving its small-town character and charm. Our community welcomes opportunities for growth and a future Water Treatment Plant.

Rotec Industries INDUSTRY AND DEDICATION

Rotec Industries is a pioneer in construction

Industry moves forward with the driving force of the fundamental elements in construction. Without electricity and wiring, a building wouldn’t have power and internet. Without plumbing and pipes, workers and employees wouldn’t have access to fresh water and cleanliness. Rotec, a concrete contractor based out of Hampshire, is a force to be reckoned with in the concrete placing realm of contracting.

Specialization in Concrete

Placement & Service

Rotec specializes in coming to solutions that work for their clients from equipment purchasing to helping plan the logistics of a project such as worker necessity, cost and scheduling. Specialists help identify concrete placing issues on a wide spectrum of structure scale, and streamline the process to fix the issues at a lower cost and more efficient timeline.

According to Rotec’s homepage, the company focuses on designing “complete systems for a large-scale project,” engineering “individual products and complete systems,” manufacturing “custom

and high capacity equipment,” installing and delivering service equipment and renting, selling or leasing their equipment.

Products & Brands

These are just some of the brands and major equipment Rotec utilizes and specializes in the field.

Roller Compacted Concrete

With this particular equipment used in dam construction, Rotec continues “developing various conveyor systems capable of meeting the ever growing demands of engineers and contractors.” Their designed conveyor system has been widely used throughout the world for many RCC dams.

Creter Cranes

This crane is most often used for exact accuracy and hard access mass concrete placement. These cranes can place gravel, backfill and sand, reaching angles and placing speeds that are truly impressive.

Towerbelt

This system is used mainly for bigger civil projects and dams. The system places virtually any sort of concrete “at 780 meters cubed per hour” capacities.

Conveyor Systems

One of Rotec’s main contributions to construction is their “pioneered” conveyor system including Port-o-Belt Conveyors, Type 2A Conveyors and Magnum Conveyors.

Commitment to Excellence

Each piece of equipment has been utilized with the utmost efficiency and attention to detail. Rotec is not a company that completes their contracts halfway. As a “worldwide leader in concrete placing systems,” their reputation precedes them. Rotec is also a company looking toward the future of construction and concrete placement. As their website clearly states:

“The future of Rotec lies in refining the equipment we already have and a dedication to advance new ideas for the construction industry. The utilization of each Rotec concrete placing system, either individually, or combined, can achieve promising results for your project.”

This is a company worthwhile knowing and a company who will do the job right.

he year 2022 was the year that projects planned for years, even decades, came together. The majority of funding for these projects came from state and federal grants. Streetscape was completed early in July providing the Festival Block as a home for many new and renewed events. Hampshire welcomed new businesses: Hampshire Social, Alfono’s Italian Eatery, El Chido’s Food Truck Business and Garden Berry. Keep an eye out for more to come this spring. We all know spring is here when Chick-N-Dip opens for the season, and James Motors celebrated 80 years in Hampshire. Thanks to the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, new members and longtime members, for their contribution to our community.

The Hampshire Police Department welcomes Chief Doug Pann. He replaced Chief Brian Thompson, who retired in 2022 after 41 years with the department. Chief Pann comes to the village from Rockford where he was deputy chief, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. The Hampshire Police Department will become the Regional Training Resource Center for the Chicago Metro Area, thanks to a federal grant for the department’s new Virtual Reality Training Center, the first one of its kind in Illinois.

The Village Board continues its commitment to improving technology in 2023 with the implementation of new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, improving services to our residents, and efficiency of staff time.

Hampshire

The village recently launched our new My Hampshire app. Download it today from the Apple or Google Play Store to report a new pothole, a street light out, an abandoned vehicle and more. With the My Hampshire app, your village government is in the palm of your hand to apply for a fence permit, pay your water bill, or just post a favorite photo of Hampshire and have it featured on the app.

Hampshire Public Works completed the new one-mile North/South Water Main that now connects our North water system with our South water system. This provides for redundancy, increases in demand, regardless where it comes from. The new intersection at State and Route 72 may be the most important public safety improvement implemented in 2022. Just a stop sign until a temporary light was installed in 2015, the new intersection now includes pedestrian walkways, sidewalks, and a major upgrade to the stormwater culvert system, eliminating the frequent flooding at State and Route 72. A significant resurfacing project will be completed on Centennial Drive in early spring 2023, and the Village Board will receive a new 20-year utilities master plan, identifying the village’s infrastructure needs, allowing them to set priorities and plan for the next decade.

Prairie Ridge North Development by the Crown Family is a newly designed subdivision that expanded housing options, with eight miles of walking trails with acres

of prairie plantings and open space. Along with the Oakstead Development by Crown approved in 2021, Hampshire now has wellplanned housing options available for a generation to come. In spite of the volatility in the housing market nationwide, Lennar Homes continues building at a brisk pace in Tamm’s Farm. Prairie Ridge South welcomes new homeowners and residents weekly to Hampshire, and DR Horton is well on their way to building over 200 new townhouses, including 78 build-to-rent units for those who prefer not to buy.

“Logistics” and “supply chain,” once manufacturing and freight industry lexicon, became part of the public vernacular when COVID-19 happened. While many businesses and communities were suffering from the economic impact of the pandemic, Hampshire was poised to take advantage of our location as a logistics hub. Thirty miles from O’Hare, and 30 miles from Rockford Airport, Hampshire maintained its steady, managed growth by targeting these opportunities. The new Hampshire Logistics Park is underway on Route 20 at the tollway, where Vista Trucking will begin construction of their new headquarters, service, and logistics facility this summer. Freight Union will open their new HQ facility in the Hampshire Woods Business, and Old Dominion will break ground on a new logistics facility this spring.

Embrace Opportunity and Honor Tradition!

2022, What A Year For The Village of Hampshire…

History of Hampshire

Originally known as Henpeck, the Village of Hampshire began when Zenas Allen of Vermont became its first settler in 1836. From 1837 to 1845 Henpeck existed along the Chicago – Galena Stagecoach Trial at Old State (Route 20), Big Timber, and Brier Hill Roads. Hampshire Township was organized in 1845, and the village’s name was changed to Hampshire. In 1876, the village relocated so that it could be along the line. Hampshire was officially incorporated that same year with Samuel Rowell as its first village president. In 1893, the farming community grew to become the second largest milk producing and shipping station in Illinois. Residents have served in the Civil War, and during World War II, Hampshire was chosen for a prisoner of war camp for 250 German soldiers who worked at the Inderrieden Canning Company.

Trees Unlimited

TO FLOURISH AND GROW

Trees Unlimited continues to serve with success in Hampshire

For over 30 years, Trees Unlimited has been working to make landscapes come alive in Hampshire and the surrounding areas.

Owned and operated by Curt and Marilee Pfaffinger, the company began in 1991 with one tree spade truck and has since grown to provide a full range of landscaping services.

Both Curt and Marilee were born and raised in Hampshire, and Curt’s family has a long history in the village.

“My parents were born here, my grandparents were born here, and many generations before them were from Hampshire. I was born here and have lived on the same property where they farmed,” Curt said.

As co-owners, Curt handles the landscaping end of the business and Marilee manages the office. When they started the business, they focused mainly on selling and planting trees.

“At that time, trees were overstocked in the nurseries, so (Curt) was able to make a business out of selling these trees and installing them for customers,” Marilee said.

The business grew, and the couple added two more tree spade trucks to accommodate larger trees. The company continued to grow and evolve steadily over the years, incorporating more services to meet the needs of their customers.

“After the first few years, we started landscaping work and selling mulch,” he said. As the company grew, and new

18 n HAMPSHIRE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

housing developments were being built, the company moved into lawn seeding and sodding for builders in the area.

During the economic recession of the mid 2000s, when building stopped, the business evolved again to incorporate tree work that was in demand at the time. When the country began to come out of the economic downturn, demand for services like landscaping started to grow and the company began to widen their services in that area.

“We started doing more commercial work, providing services like lot clearing, heavy mowing, erosion control, and restoration. We also started processing our own mulch,” Curt said.

Some of their projects nowadays involve working around green rules and regulations, promoting sustainability and environmental support.

“A lot of the projects today have requirements they need when it comes to native grasses and trees,” he said. The green industry has become important to villages, park districts, etc.

Trees Unlimited serves a wide array of residential, commercial and industrial clientele covering a 20-mile radius. The owners believe their work can have an influence on making things better for the community they call home.

“Being a full-service landscape contractor, it’s about helping

people live in a safe and livable environment, as well as providing a service to Hampshire residents and the surrounding communities.”

For the Pfaffingers, serving the Hampshire community is like serving family.

“Since we both grew up here, it’s fun to be able to provide a service to the people we know as well as the new residents moving in,” Marilee said “It is great to have a business in your hometown and have a sense of community.”

As Hampshire continues to grow, so does Trees Unlimited.

“Growth is good and it is neat that people are coming into town and loving Hampshire. There is a lot of good reminiscing that can be done and I love Hampshire. It is a convenient place to live, but it still has that small-town feel,” Marilee said.

As a business, Trees Unlimited joined the Chamber of Commerce around 1996 and has supported the organization ever since. “We don’t always get to all of their functions, but we do try to stay a member and put our ad into the guide with the other local businesses. It’s good to utilize and support business in one’s own community,” says Pfaffinger.

“We try to stay connected with what’s going on and their functions in town. If there is something we can provide to help better the community, it’s very satisfying.”

Pingree Grove

he Village of Pingree Grove, formerly known as Deerfield Precinct, was platted by its namesakes Dr. Daniel Pingree, and Mrs. Hannah Pingree, widow of Andrew Pingree Jr., in 1882. On December 12, 1906, a petition was filed to incorporate the Village of Pingree Grove. An election was held on December 29, 1906. When the votes were counted, they were in favor of Pingree Grove becoming an official Village. On February 14, 1907, Frank G. Plain, a Kane County Judge, signed the document making the Village of Pingree Grove official.

Today, the Village of Pingree Grove has the fastest growth rate among Illinois communities over 2,000 people. In terms of total number of people moving to Pingree Grove, we compete with the much larger communities of Chicago, Naperville, Champaign, and Elgin.

Pingree Grove thrives on a sense of community and offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunites for both active and laid-back lifestyles. The Village provides several parks, and active recreational areas including skate park, baseball and soccer fields, and various playgrounds throughout the community. Over 8 miles of bike and pedestrian trails wind throughout the neighborhoods. An offering of youth activities are also available in coordination with the Hampshire Park District.

The Village is home to a variety of native and migrating birds, with sightings within our parks, local ponds, or even in your own backyard! Hawks, sand cranes, bald eagles, and a recent migration of Bufflehead ducks as well as some protective turtle species can be seen here.

School District D300 serves the community through Gary D. Wright Elementary, the new Big Timber Elementary (opening August 2022), Hampshire Middle School, and Hampshire High School, all located in Hampshire, and Cambridge Lakes Charter School, located right here in Pingree Grove; in addition to Elgin Community College, in Elgin. Central School District 301 serves residents within the Village’s Heritage District.

Annual community events include a villagewide garage sale, Stars and Stripes 4th of July celebration, and holiday tree lighting celebration. The Village depends on the time and talents of generous volunteers who sign up to serve in various community event capacities.

The Pingree Grove Police Department’s mission is to provide services with integrity and dedication, to preserve life, to enforce the law, and to work in partnership with the community to enhance the quality of life in the Village of Pingree Grove.

The Public Works Department provides a full range of municipal services including maintaining village roadways, parks, and open spaces. Public Works operates a potable water system sourced from deep wells, which is cleaned and treated for safe consumption within the community. The Village also provides wastewater treatment services, which includes the operation of a unique sustainable irrigation system that uses clean wastewater effluent to keep the community green and beautiful, even during dry conditions.

Newmans Corner Pub

Newman’s Corner Pub is a fast-rising star in the social circles of Hampshire, bringing live entertainment and communitybuilding events to their corner of the Village.

The welcoming, neighborly hotspot is owned by Jeff Nawrocki and his business partner, Mike Gallo, and is managed by Sue Castle.

After the partners purchased the bar, Sue Castle stayed on, along with a few of the bartenders, and the establishment began to seek new avenues for their success.

“We knew that Hampshire didn’t have a lot of entertainment.

Being a bar without any food service, we had to find our niche,” Nawrocki said.

They found their niche by bringing in new ideas and trying anything and everything to bring in a crowd.

“(Jeff and Mike) really let me go with what my vision was for this place, which was a very friendly, female oriented, ‘make some memories and have a good time’ type of feel,” Castle said.

They began bringing in live music and entertainment and

hosting parking lot parties during the pandemic so people could get out and enjoy a good time in the open air.

“We took it to the extreme. In the summertime, we have parking lot parties with a band, and we try to have bands whenever we can,” she said.

They host a chili cookoff each year and have special guest bartenders, like the village presidents from Hampshire and Burlington, to raise funds for local charities.

“My attitude is that I want people to have a blast and if

they do, we’ve done our job. We are not who we are without the customers, the city and the trustees,” Nawrocki said.

“We have fundraisers and (Jeff’s) down for anything in a good way,” says Castle. “We have lots of live entertainment and karaoke and it’s really become a neighborhood family.”

The vibe at Newman’s is fun and relaxed, and there is an emphasis on being supportive of the community with a giveback attitude that is contagious. One of their favorite ways to give back is to veterans.

Near the entrance to the bar hangs an American flag adorned with sticky notes. The frame around the flag was custom made by one of their patrons from one of the old buildings in town. It is a piece they use to help support and thank veterans.

“We like to celebrate our veterans every day,” Nawrocki said. “Every time I mention the flag, someone gives me a donation for the flag with messages and everything. We’ll give them a sticky note with their monetary donation on them and we put it on the flag. When a veteran comes in, they can pull one of the sticky notes off and get a free drink,” he said.

Newman’s has a donation jar on the bar, and every month, they pick a different charity in which to donate.

“We’re doing a fundraiser in a couple of weeks where the bartender donates all her tips to two different charities. This

fundraiser typically nets over $2,000 from our generous community,” Castle said.

Nawrocki loves his customers and is impressed by their generosity and love for the community.

“Our customer base is phenomenal,” he said. There is always something fun to do at Newman’s.

“We have free pool on Fridays, and in the summer, we typically have one parking lot party a weekend where we shut down a portion of the parking lot and we have bands or karaoke outside. We have a pool league in the fall,” Castle said.

Newman’s joined the Chamber of Commerce in 2021, after a few rocky pandemic years, and ever since, they have been supporting the Chamber and the community in whatever way they can.

Stop in at Newman’s Corner Pub and you will feel like family.
