By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Voters in Downers Grove will have just one question on the April ballot regarding the village hall and police and fire station construction proposal. During the Jan. 20 village council meeting, council members decided to survey residents after the election to determine why votes were cast the way they were and what voters think about the proposed facilities plan. “I think this is a good solution for determining what really is the motivation behind either a yes vote or nay vote on the referendum question that will appear on the ballot,” Commissioner Greg Hose said. “It allows us to engage in additional public education

Q: What is angular cheilitis? A: Angular cheilitis (pron. ky-LIE-tis) is a condition that develops with age. As we get older, the cells in our skin contain less water and the tissue holds less fat. One of the results is the creation of so-called “purse string” wrinkles around the lips. In some cases, especially if the loose skin condition is exacerbated by tooth wear or tooth loss, the wrinkles can become especially deep at the corners of the mouth. If they are subjected to continued wetting and drying because of constant licking, the corners can become chapped and inflamed. This is the condition known as angular cheilitis. The condition also can be aggravated by vitamin deficiencies, particularly by a deficiency of vitamin B2. It is not uncommon for angular cheilitis to be accompanied by an infection like candidiasis, which is the general term for conditions involving a variety of fungi referred to as yeasts. The most common among these fungi is called candida albicans, which is naturally found in the mouth. When something throws off the natural balance involving fungi in the mouth, it’s a problem. Candidiasis in the mouth is commonly referred to as thrush. Talk with your dentist to learn more about angular cheilitis and other dental conditions that accompany aging.

on the issue in terms of what our facilities challenges are.” The question on the April ballot will ask if the village of Downers Grove should spend $46 million or more on a proposed new village hall and police and fire station. The Downers Grove for Responsible Government Coalition, formed by residents Tim Harms and Tim Werner, started a petition drive in November for the referendum question. Fifty volunteers gathered more than 3,000 signatures to place the question on the ballot. “This referendum is not intended to provide answers on what should be done,” said Harms. “It is simply a

gauge of public opinion on the plan that is currently favored by council.” Hose was the driving force behind the potential addition of two referendum questions because he felt the advisory referendum didn’t offer insight into the complexity of the facilities plan. The two questions he proposed asked if the village should spend millions of tax dollars to perform routine maintenance on the existing obsolete and undersized police station and if the village should construct a new combined police, fire and fleet services facility on Ogden Avenue. In December, the village conducted two town hall meetings that offered tours of the village hall and police station to provide information to residents on the proposed facilities project. The village has been studying the facilities issue since 2007 and asserts the existing village hall and police station, located downtown at the Civic Center site, are outdated and inadequate. “We get a lot of kids who come here because they can be who they want to be here. It’s a great adventure, and we are looking forward to it.” Jim Legner Adventure Realm owner Legner said. “It’s really like a Renaissance fair in here.” Additionally, with the wave of the wand in front of a treasure chest, it will open to reveal gold that will be added to the customer’s account. A successful quest will offer plenty of these funds to be redeemed at the Marketplace for prizes. Lords and ladies are available to assist any customer who may need help on their quest. This is the second incarnation of Adventure Realm, having operated in Yorktown Shopping Center for 18 months before closing in September 2011 because of factors including the need for a larger space to add additional attractions and a kitchen and the desire for higher visibility, according to Emily Bandza, events manager at Adventure Realm. Adventure Realm opened quietly about week ago, but the formal ribbon cutting was Jan. 20. And, yes, there was a sword used in place of the traditional scissors. Many returning customers have already found them, however, and Legner welcomes them and new customers wholeheartedly into his kingdom. “We get a lot of kids who come here because they can be who they want to be here,” Legner said. “It’s a great adventure, and we are looking forward to it.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Once upon a time, businessman Jim Legner attended the Dungeons and Dragons Club at the Downers Grove Public Library when he was in middle school. It was an activity that would have a lasting impact throughout his quest into adulthood. The Clarendon Hills resident has been involved with family entertainment-based attractions since he opened the fun-house maze Amazing Chicago 14 years ago on Navy Pier. Legner expanded his entertainment enterprise with the newly opened Adventure Realm, an entertainment center where live-action role playing meets virtual gaming. Lords and ladies of the realm, medieval costumes, magic wands and a Great Hall of Games await all who enter the 23,400-square-foot fantasy kingdom at 2011 63rd St., Downers Grove. MagiQuest is the heart of the operation. With the aid of a magic wand that may be bought for $15.99 or rented for $1.99, a customer creates their own character before they head out on a series of quests through a medieval-themed maze. The electronic wands retain a customer’s character and progress for future visits, which can be used in other MagiQuest locations, such as Great Wolf Lodge. By waving the wand in front of monitors, customers activate the onscreen animation and have an opportunity to gain powers through magic runes. Eventually, these powers will allow for further quests. There are 20 levels of MagiQuest quests for adventurers to experience. “Some kids come dressed in costume and decorate their wands,”

Longtime resident remembered DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove resident Ted McCollum had been involved with the village one way or another his entire life. The former volunteer Downers Grove firefighter and Park District commissioner passed away Dec. 29 at the age of 92. He grew up in a house on Saratoga Avenue that Ted has been in the family for McCollum more than 100 years, according to his daughter Sarah Lutz. While his face may not be familiar, his name may be for those who visit McCollum Park Ice Rink, named for McCollum in the early 1970s, Lutz said. “He was honored, but didn’t want to make a big deal about it,” Lutz said. His family owned McCollum Hoist and Manufacturing, a rigging and pulley company, where he worked as a teenager and young adult until World War II began. He joined the U.S. Army when he was 21 years old and became a military policeman in 1943, stationed in New York City during the war.
“He lived a good life and was good to the community and to the school district. He was a fixture of Downers Grove. He was the kind of guy you want to have in your community.” Larry Wylie Friend of Ted McCollum After his discharge in 1946, he headed home and returned to his job at McCollum Hoist. Working for the family business allowed McCollum flexibility to come and go, according to Lutz, and he would put that flexibility to great use. “The town was small and he was a community guy,” Lutz said. “So was my mom. It was a time when you got involved with your community.” And involved he became. McCollum was a volunteer firefighter from 1955 to 1988. Long before cellphones were available, Lutz said the firehouse phone was connected to all the volunteers’ house phones and when a fire call would come,
the house phone would have a different ring, alerting the house to a fire call. Lutz said one particular fire call ended McCollum’s cigarette habit. The fire extinguished and McCollum was sloshing through standing water left from the hoses when realized he lost his cigarettes, she said. “He was looking through debris for his cigarettes and finally thought, ‘What am I doing?’” she said. Another passion of McCollum’s was the Park District. He began working at the Park District in 1960, serving as president, vice president and treasurer as well as commissioner, Lutz said. He took the parks seriously enough that he also involved his family, especially his children Sarah, Jeffrey and Michael. “He used to take us kids to the parks and pick up garbage,” Lutz said. “He was a big proponent to get involved in your community. He would always say ‘You need to make a difference.’” McCollum kept true to his motto, and spread his involvement to include high school baseball. Larry Wyllie was a student of Downers Grove High School back in the 1950s when he first met McCollum. “I was playing American Legion
baseball and he handled the team, though he didn’t coach it,” Wyllie said. American Legion baseball was a team made up of varsity baseball players from different high schools that would play other American Legion teams, Wyllie said. Wyllie kept in touch with McCollum during his college years when he would come home during the summers, he said. When South High opened in 1965, Wyllie was on staff for two years as a math teacher and coach for basketball and baseball, and continued to keep in touch with McCollum. “He was a strong supporter of Downers Grove and Downers Grove athletics. We got to be very good friends and when I came back to Downers Grove I coached American Legion baseball, and that is where we strengthened our relationship,” Wyllie said. The two even served together for a few years on the Park District Board, he said. “He lived a good life and was good to the community and to the school district. He was a fixture of Downers Grove,” Wyllie said. “He was the kind of guy you want to have in your community.”

His ability to lead the way during our irst ever Hoopscoming Week was impressive. Getting numerous students involved to create video announcements about the events associated with the week was innovative and a great model for what future student leaders should do in order to promote our school and encourage as many as possible to get involved. This year’s Hoopscoming Dance had 450 students in attendance. An incredible number considering this is a dance that typically does not run due to low participation. Jacob has done an incredible job of balancing the academic and extracurricular life as a student. As he was sorting and organizing, choosing what to keep, donate or pitch, an idea was hatched. A brilliant idea to donate his old gear to those in need. As the wheels kept turning, Johan decided to reach out to some local schools to see if they had any old equipment that they’d like to unload. Low and behold, after his irst outreach attempts Johan accumulated over 800 pieces of athletic gear to

He visits there annually with his immediate family and is all too familiar with the extent of the poverty there. He felt that there was no better place to donate his goods, then to the children in Guatemala. Today, Johan’s simple but extraordinary idea has blossomed into a full-ledged organization that he now calls, “Goals4All”. It has been in existence for almost six years now and every year, a different school in Guatemala is chosen to receive all of the equipment Johan gathers throughout the year. If Goals4All isn’t reason enough to recognize this ine fellow, you can add exceptional student, athlete, and accomplished pianist to the mix. To the editor: Concerning the reconstruction of the Clyde Estates streets, Public Works held two long open meetings, and their engineers have walked the neighborhood listening to ideas and hearing complaints. I commend them for that. Many problems need to be addressed. Road surface and subbase is deteriorating and needs replacement. That’s a no-brainer. Drainage is a serious problem, with Clyde flooded a foot deep in a heavy rain last summer, aggravated by the berm that was added on the adjacent YMCA lot many years back. A high

not been contacted by anyone from the village about my property. I understand the village wants to take away our neighborhood’s unique character by removing the grass triangle with trees and putting in sidewalks. I see from the proposal language for the contract that was let to Christopher Burke Engineering that incorrectly identifies our neighborhood as being built in the ’60s. It was constructed in the mid-’50s. Can it be true that the village will replace two triangles with a ditch? I do not have any stormwater issues as I am located adjacent to the highest elevation in Clyde Estates, if not the highest in the village. However, I do have the widest front yard and it would be detrimental to my large mature trees to install sidewalks; the rain would flood the sidewalks and I am unable to shovel snow. In my 75 years of driving I do not have any difficulty with traffic in our neighborhood, nor have there been any vehicular accidents to warrant such a project and the expense. My property faces both Washington and 60th Place yet I still feel it’s a secluded home. You are welcome to come and enjoy the value I and our neighbors place on the landscaping, trees

To the editor: I have lived in Downers Grove where I raised our family since the late 1940s. I served on the Downers Grove Village Council, and was elected to the DuPage County Board and subsequently to the DuPage County Forest Preserve. I place a great value on the trees and wooded lots in this village – also recognized as a Tree City. Recently I learned of a proposed capital project for the neighborhood of Clyde Estates. It is the isolated residential neighborhood off Main Street between 59th and 61st streets east to Lyman Avenue. Why would one consider changing this established area of winding streets by installing sidewalks and removing the treed triangles? This quiet winding country lane should be retained as such. Denburn Woods and Johnson Highland areas have similar unique characters and should also be left as created. Let’s be more conservative in the use of our tax dollars. Consider first the neighbors who chose to live there before reconfiguring their neighborhood.
volume of traffic speeds down Washington and Clyde to avoid the traffic light at Main and 59th. The roadways can be configured to stop this. Also, sacrificing mature trees to the redevelopment is depressing. Maintaining the neighborhood aesthetics is essential. These are difficult problems that Public Works has made a valiant effort to solve. But the elephant in the room is the sidewalks mandate. This makes an aesthetically acceptable solution impossible. Can you imagine an edict to add sidewalks in Denburn Woods? It would destroy the look and feel of that neighborhood – and cut property values. The same is true at Clyde Estates, which was developed around 1950, with an estate look and feel – curving streets, many trees, open grass parkways, etc. It retains those characteristics today. That’s its special appeal and value. Adding sidewalks will destroy that. Beside messing up aesthetics, adding sidewalks frustrates drainage improvement. Presently drainage is handled by almost imperceptible ditches along the roadway. Adding sidewalks squeezes the ditch into the space between the sidewalk and the roadway, resulting in ditches with steeper sides that are difficult to mow and are unstable. For an example, see rebuilt Carpenter between 63rd and 67th. The village should review this issue and drop its insistence on sidewalks in Clyde Estates.

Share memories with younger generations As we age, many of us like to look back at events that occurred during our younger years. We like to reminisce, make connections with past experiences, and reflect upon friendships and relationships. Reminiscing allows us to sort out and pull together events and achieve a sense of purpose and continuity. It is important to share our COMMUNITY life story with family. It enVOICE ables us to connect with them Hanna on a uniquely personal level. Benioff By talking about our parents and grandparents or recalling experiences from throughout our lifetime, we make family history come alive for our children, grandchildren and future generations. Revealing our inner lives, sharing painful and humorous moments, discussing family patterns and roots, we help create an intimate sense of unity and pride in the family’s heritage. Our family also may find an interesting perspective about changes in the world we have witnessed over time. There are numerous ways for sharing memories and creating a family legacy: • Discussing the idea of memory sharing with family members and inviting them to join you for several “family history sessions.” This can be done as a group or on a one-on-one basis. • Compiling a book of reminiscences that include letters, photos, recipes, poems, stories and diaries. Review them with family members and put them in an album for future generations. • Sharing special memories with a grandchild by recording them in an album and presenting it to him or her on a special occasion. • Assembling a photo album by collecting old pictures you have saved over the years. Together with family members, identify and write captions for each of the photos and assemble them in an album. • Emphasizing family traditions transmits a cultural heritage and creates a sense of continuity. Does your family celebrate holidays with traditional foods or costumes? Are there specific heirlooms such as antique silverware, dishes or tablecloths used for special occasions? Does your family enjoy particular games, songs or dances on certain holidays? Pass your special and unique cultural heritage on by recording them for your family. Taking time to create your family legacy with such activities can bring families closer together and assure that these memories live with future generations.

Seven pizzerias from Downers Grove and Woodridge delivered up their tasty pies for District 99 Education Foundation’s Pizza Wars fundraiser Jan. 15 at South High School. Tortorice’s Pizzeria claimed top honors as voted on by the 425 attendees, but the real winners are the students who benefit from the money raised. There must have been a special gift under the Christmas tree for Downers Grove North boys basketball players. A seven-game winning streak, starting the day after Christmas, has turned the Trojans’ season around. Another conference win Friday boosted North’s record to 11-5. Here’s hoping the squad can keep the momentum alive.

SOUND OFF
After reading Sound Off, I had to respond regarding a stop light on one of the side streets from the Burlington Highlands. I have lived here 43 years and have witnessed so many crashes, it would surprise residents from other parts of Downers Grove. Traffic moves so fast in four lanes and the turn lanes, you take your life in your hands trying to turn left. None of us do. We drive out of our way to go east on Ogden [Avenue]. I guess you have to live here to understand this issue.

Downers Grove residents want referendum on building
The voters of Downers Grove want a referendum to ask if the village should spend $46 million or more building the new facilities. At the last Downers Grove council meeting, councilman Geoff Neustadt said, “Governing by referendum is not something I’m in favor of.” Mr. Neustadt is running for mayor of Downers Grove, yet it seems he does not want to govern by what the people want. I think any mayoral candidate should listen to what the people are saying because we are speaking loud.

There is a [person] who continues to feed geese, Canada geese – they’re just overrunning the neighborhood, and I just think it’s awful. You are disturbing the neighborhood.

Why so willing to go along with Robert Breuder?
With the exception of board member Kathy Hamilton, please hand out the dunce caps. [It’s] just incredible that this group, including Chairwoman Erin Birt, is so naïve and can’t understand their only duty is a fiduciary one to taxpayers and students. [Robert] Breuder has clearly worked in his personal best interest, but why is the board so willing and helpful to

Breuder should have been fired, not rewarded with severance
Again, we have College of DuPage in the news and the stupidity of the Board of Trustees continues (except for one lone wolf who has integrity). What in the world are the trustees thinking? With the “no confidence” vote that was overwhelming, the trustees see fit to award [Robert] Breuder $762,000 in severance? Don’t the trustees have any backbone? The man should have been fired, not rewarded. There has been nothing but tension in the college since he arrived. Most of the faculty and students would love to see this man walked out in handcuffs instead of with money bags. It is also time the public did its homework before an election. There are seven trustees that should also be shown to the door. Wake up people!

This is regarding the [Interstate] 355 underpass, which divides Lisle and Downers Grove on Hitchcock Road. The area underneath [Interstate] 355 in the right-of-way walk areas and so forth in there has debris, garbage, old cans, landscaping debris, cups, so on and so forth, old fast food bags. Consistently, it’s been like that for a long time. Only periodically, does – I believe – the village of Downers Grove clean that up. I believe that’s village of Downers Grove’s jurisdiction. That’s their area, not Lisle’s, but Downers Grove. And it’s a terrible, terrible eyesore. It looks like somewhere in downtown Detroit, not downtown, on the outskirts of the city. It looks terrible. Periodically, at least twice a week, someone should go through there and clean it up.
The Downers Grove Village Council refused to even discuss a referendum to taxpayers for the largest capital project to date. Neither has the Village Newsletter mentioned the village redevelopment project. Citizen petitioners responded, and an advisory referendum is on the April 7 ballot. In six years, Downers Grove has expended millions building without referendum. … Should the three Village Council members (Sean Durkin, Geoff Neustadt, Becky Rheintgen) who seek re-election continue to represent us if they disregard our opinions as how our tax dollars are spent? Let’s clean house at Village Council this spring.

We live, drive, walk in Downers Grove, but where is the intelligence and common sense? Those of you who commute by train to and from work should realize that most of you wear black clothing, and it is not visible in the dark. Many are walking while cellphone-talking and not observing stop signs, traffic lights or pedestrian walkways. You put yourselves and drivers at risk. This also applies to those drivers who do not put on your lights at dawn or dusk. Folks, it’s not about whether you can see, but whether you can be seen.

OBITUARIES PATRICIA ANN AREHART Patricia Ann Arehart, known to most as Aunt Pat, died in her home in Downers Grove, IL, on January 15, 2015. Born in Indiana, the family moved to Illinois in 1969 where she had lived ever since. Her first job at age 13, was on a local farm where she began a varied journey of careers in animal car (both domestic and exotic), event planning, non profit arts management, warehousing distribution, and most recently, property maintenance and garden arts. She was most proud of having mid-wifed a pig and nine piglets and giving a bubble bath to a Black Bear who loved her home baked blueberry pies (to whom she fed by hand). Aunt Pat was an avid reader, cyclist, puppeteer, greeting card designer, antique treasure hunter and a devotee of home repair and decorating. In short she was happiest left alone all day with the right set of tools and a long list of chores. Pat was preceded in death by grandparents, Arthur and Lulu Arehart and Rampo and Svetanka Pavloff; and eldest brother, Robert Arehart. Survived by devoted parents, Bob and Daisy Arehart; brothers, Chuck and Rich Arehart; sister in law, Mary. Dear auntie & uncles, Lil and Erv Sajdera, Felix Pavloff, Bruce Arehart and Luvena; and a bazillion cousins. Steadfast friends, Cheryl Dragel, Jerry Hansen, Sylvia Castle, Larry Bast, Connie Hawkins, and Vito and Siciliano, and families. Loyal neighbors past and present, of the Greater 4800 Block of Forest Avenue, Downers Grove. Flowers are great so plant more perennials! ILLINOIS TRAFFIC CHALLENGE The Downers Grove Police Department will be participating in the 2015 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge. Traffic safety is one of the highest priorities for the Downers Grove Police Department. Department personnel work year-round to educate our citizens, beginning with preschool students, on the importance of being safe in a vehicle, on a bike, and as a pedestrian. Aggressive and consistent traffic enforcement coupled with educational efforts has the greatest chance of reducing the incident of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities. The Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge was created to recognize law enforcement agencies for their efforts in addressing traffic safety issues. This program is modeled after the National Chiefs Challenge awards developed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to target problematic traffic issues including speeding, impaired driving, and use of seat belts and child safety seats. Please do your part. Buckle-up on every trip, every time; make sure your children under the age of eight are restrained in a properly fitting child safety seat. Obey the speed limit, especially in school zones or construction zones, and do not drink and drive. It is the police department's goal to have a safe new year. Please make it your goal as well.

Bien Trucha treats Glen Ellyn to a toda madre GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior. Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia. Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter. Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans. The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal. Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch. We also opted for the frijoles borrachos – drunken beans with pork belly, pico de gallo and Mexican beer – which

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – Improved health is adding to the soaring momentum for Downers Grove North’s basketball team. Devin Blake, a West Suburban Silver all-conference player last season, and Bowen Marks both returned from injuries Friday, and their additions combined with strong defense and clutch free-throw shooting to earn the host Trojans their seventh straight win, a 49-44 victory against Oak Park-River Forest. Blake (nine points, four rebounds) provided a big spark off the bench to a balanced Downers North attack led by Jordan Kedrowski (12 points, two steals). “Our first win in two years against them, the first game back for myself ... it’s really exciting,” said Blake, who missed two weeks with a sprained ankle. “We’ve got something really special going.” Myles Farley added eight points and Matt Mahlke (four rebounds) and Colin Kramper scored six each. Dave Edwards grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and Marks hit a 3-pointer early in the Trojans’ decisive 17-0 second-half rally. Free-throw shooting was extra special Friday for North (11-5, 2-4 WSS). The Trojans made 10 of 11 charity tosses in the fourth quarter and 15 of 19 overall while the Huskies were just 4 for 11 at the line on the night (1 for 4 in the second half). “It seems like we’re kind of out of sync at times,” said Trojans coach Jim Thomas, whose team trailed 21-18 at halftime. “But we kept our composure late and stepped up to the free-throw line. And that’s where we won the game. Our kids stayed under control and kept battling.” Defense was the other second-half key. The Huskies led 29-22 with 5:30 left in the third quarter, but Downers North proceeded to hold OPRF scoreless for more than nine minutes (until 4:05 left in the game) to build a 39-29 lead. The Huskies shot 35 percent from the floor on the night (17 of 49), and were 3 of 18 during the first 12 minutes of the second half. “Overall, everyone’s flying around, getting stops and rebounding the ball,” Blake said of the defensive keys. “Everyone’s talking and communicating – everyone was connecting really well.”

Downers Grove North’s Devin Blake shoots from the paint Friday against Oak Park River Forest in Downers Grove. After OPRF drew within 47-44 on a 3-pointer with 16.1 seconds left, Kedrowski’s two free throws with 15 seconds left sealed the win. Matt Fallbacher (five points) and Farley each were 4 for 4 from the line in the fourth. The Trojans’ run since a 4-5 start has been impressive but not surprising to the team. “Four of the five teams we’ve lost to have been ranked in the state,” Thomas said. “And these kids have been winning since fifth grade. I had to pull a couple of them up [to varsity] a few years ago, but they’re all together again.
“They’re all such great kids and they all bring their own value to the team,” Thomas added. “They like each other and play for one another.” Getting Edwards back from injury in mid-December was a huge factor, and another boost came Friday. “There are a lot of reasons (for the streak),” Blake said. “Everyone’s clicking, maturity, we have a Division I football player going to Wisconsin in Dave [Edwards] who’s back. “Everyone’s really focusing in and realizing the goal of winning a regional and sectional. That’s where you want to be, playing those big games and cutting down nets.”
The Downers Grove North girls basketball team dropped its last two conference by a combined seven points. After defeating rival Hinsdale Central in their West Suburban Silver opener Dec. 2, 2014, the Trojans gave up a fourth-quarter lead Jan. 20 and fell to Hinsdale Central 45-43. Junior Jaida Green led the way for the Trojans with 20 points and six rebounds while Madison Farnsworth chipped in eight points and six rebounds. The Trojans returned to action Saturday for their only game of the season against conference for Oak Park River Forest. DGN jumped out to a 9-3 advantage after the first quarter before OPRF battled back to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room at half. Ultimately, the hot-shooting Huskies were too much for the Trojans, as Oak Park River Forest hit 10 3-pointers and ran away with a 57-52 victory. Peyton Winters paced DGN with 17 points and seven rebounds and Green finished with 16 points. In the midst of a three-game losing streak that dates back to a Jan. 17 defeat at the hands of Marist, head coach Stephan Bolt believes the team’s effort and intensity is lacking. “Our opponents want it more than us, they have found ways to win while we have found ways to lose,” Bolt said. “Defensively we have to be better, we have to be better on the glass and we need to have a better shot selection down the stretch.” The Trojans faced Lemont on Tuesday night and will go on the road to play Proviso West at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Downers Grove South girls eye share of conference lead By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove South girls basketball team is firing on all cylinders heading into arguably its toughest stretch of the season. After an emphatic 49-38 road victory Jan. 21 against Providence Catholic, the Mustangs returned to conference action Saturday against Leyden. Ava Porlier paced DGS with 15 points, Kiera James added 13 points and Vashae Easley added 12 as the Mustangs jumped out to a 20-points lead and cruised to a 53-41 win. Saturday’s victory improved the Mustangs’ West Suburban Gold standing to 7-1 on the season, just one game back of conference-leading Proviso East. “Providence was a huge win for us. I don’t think many people expected us to
go there and leave with a victory,” coach Lyndsie Long said. “Then, against Leyden, we got out to a big lead early and I was able to play all my players, so that was a nice moment for the team.” While Long and the Mustangs enjoyed the back-to-back victories and have now won four of their past five contests, they returned to practice Monday focused on the upcoming week against two of the top teams in the state. The Mustangs went on the road Tuesday night to face 21-2 Benet, an East Suburban Catholic team loaded with Division I athletes, including Bradley-bound Emily Eshoo, Northern Michigan commit Emily Schramek and D-I recruit Kathleen Doyle. “Benet is loaded with great players, so we just need to get in a good day of practice, break down film and come out
ready to play,” Long said. “Hopefully we can stay focused and limit mental mistakes and turnovers. Downers Grove South will return to the practice court Wednesday and Thursday before a West Suburban Gold Showdown with Proviso East, which defeated DGS 77-49 on Dec. 13, 2014, then 61-48 in the third-place game of the Oswego East holiday tournament. This time, the Mustangs will play host to the Pirates, and Long knows they will have to play mistake-free basketball to notch an upset victory. “Proviso East is a very fast, quick and athletic team,” she said. “We have played them twice this year, once in a very competitive tournament game, so we know that we have to stay focused and come ready to play. It will be a huge win if we can pull it off.”

good team basketball the whole season, and I think that has been the case the last five games. We are making a concerted effort to cut down on mental errors and its showing in our overall play.
Downers Grove South Basketball | Senior Why she was selected:
of fun an really enjoys playing together. What’s it like playing with this group? Porlier: Obviously you want to win every game, but you need to sometimes remind yourself that this is a game and it should be fun. Winning definitely eases the tension, but this is a really good group of girls and we have a lot of fun playing together.
Soulier: You have two tough matchups Soulier: It seems like the team has a lot this week against Benet and Proviso East.
Ava Porlier showed no signs of rust
after an eight-day layoff, leading the Mustangs to a road victory against Providence Catholic on Jan. 21 and pacing the team with 15 points Saturday in a win against Leyden.
What’s it going to take to get a win in either of those games? Porlier: We have to limit turnovers
and make the most out of each possession. Shot selection will be key, and we need to make sure to run through our offense and really look for the open shooter. And we just need to focus and play good help-side defense. They are two very good teams, but they are beatable and we are looking forward to the challenge.
