Local Goodwill receives a bit of the same on Christmas Eve By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A little holiday cheer arrived at the Downers Grove Goodwill store and donation center on Christmas Eve when an anonymous donor paid a visit just before closing time. According to store manager Keith Schultz, a man with his wife and two children came to the store and wanted to pay for customers’ purchases. “He paid for five customers’ purchases,” Schultz said. “One
If you go The Downers Grove Goodwill Store and Donation Center is located at 110 Ogden Ave. For information, call 630-964-1343 or visit amazinggoodwill.com. gentleman bought a sweater and he was almost in tears when he found out he didn’t have to pay for it, so it was a great response.” Schultz said the donor spent about $150 on customer
purchases, but the donor was not quite finished with his generosity. “He wanted to show his appreciation for the work our staff does for the community,” Schultz said. The donor, who wished to remain anonymous, shook the hands of all seven staff members working that night and handed them each $50. “We were all in shock,” said William Kribs, an employee working that night. As a nonprofit company, staff do not accept tips as a
company policy, Schultz said, but to keep the holiday spirit of giving continuing into the new year, a pizza party will be thrown in early January for all 42 employees with the money that was initially given to staff, Schultz said. “The staff know the rules and we didn’t want to upset the donor,” Schultz said. “The man’s intention was for all employees to benefit, and this is the best way for everyone to enjoy his generosity. His intentions are definitely being respected.”

Run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Catholic lay organization to help community members, the food pantry serves about 38 families every week. The food is donated primarily by St. Mary’s parishioners, with some food items bought from Northern Illinois Food Bank. Dry food items, fresh produce and meat are available for food pantry customers. Food donations are accepted during the pantry’s business hours. St. Vincent de Paul will also help pantry customers with financial assistance for housing, and organizes clothing drives in the spring and fall. Both organizations are run by volunteers, but the community at large is responsible for a majority of the items that fill the shelves and clothing racks at both pantries. “Every school in Downers donated to us this year which was great,” Anderson said.

DOWNERS GROVE – The holiday season tends to bring out the best in people, bringing goodwill in the form of monetary, food and clothing donations to organizations that help those less fortunate. Local food pantries keep the generosity going year-round with help from local grocery store donations as well as private parties. “Sometimes, we are busier than other times,” said Ruth Anderson, coordinator of the Downers Grove Area FISH Food Pantry for the past 42 years. “At the end of the year, we see more people come through.” While the health of the economy continues to make headlines, Anderson said pantry clientele numbers have been pretty steady this year compared to last year. “We serve close to 150 families a month,” Anderson said. The FISH pantry maintains its food pantry and clothes closet in the basement of the Downers Grove Township building, 4340 Prince St. Residents of Downers Grove, Lisle and Westmont have access to the food pantry and clothes closet, while Woodridge residents may come for clothing only. “We take their word they need us,” Anderson said. “They need to show proof of ID and a current utility bill to show they live in the area.” Dry goods such as cereal, peanut butter and canned foods are always needed but so are paper products such as toilet paper and toothpaste that cannot be bought with food stamps, she said. Fresh produce and meat also are avail-

START THE NEW YEAR RIGHT The start of a New Year is an exciting time. You’re probably busting with determination to make a fresh start on at least a couple of fronts. At the top of your list should be the easily accomplished resolution to make an appointment with your dentist for a thorough checkup. Most dentists recommend twice-yearly dental visits for cleaning and examination. January and July offer two easily remembered milestones to mark in your calendar right now. By visiting your dentist every six months, any problem that may develop won’t have more than six months to advance and will be easier– and less costly– to address. During a cleaning, either your dentist or a hygienist will scrape any accumulated plaque and tarter off your teeth. By keeping your gumline clear of this buildup, you greatly reduce the likelihood of developing periodontal disease (the technical name for gum disease), which is the leading cause of tooth loss. In addition, your teeth and mouth will feel clean and fresh when the process is completed. Keep in mind that your oral health is an important component of your overall health. On that note, this is also a good time to make an appointment with your general physician for a checkup. Talk with your dentist about establishing a dental care schedule.

By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove for Responsible Government coalition is one step closer to placing an advisory question on the April 7 ballot to gauge resident opinion on the village’s proposed facilities plan project. Co-chairmen of the coalition, Tim Werner and Tim Harms, submitted petitions with more than 3,000 signatures Monday to Downers Grove Village Clerk April Holden. The petition was in support of a referendum asking residents if they supported spending $46 million or more on the proposed new Downers Grove village hall, police station and fire station. Eight percent of voters who voted in the last gubernatorial general election were needed to sign the petition – equaling 1,551 signatures – to place the referendum question on the April 7 ballot. According to Holden, there were 228 pages of signatures submitted by the coalition. The public has five days to file any objection to the petition, Holden said. If there are no objections, she will certify the question to the DuPage

DOWNERS GROVE – The day after Christmas was a destructive day for the Downers Grove Park District. Between midnight and 8 a.m. Dec. 26, 2014, someone damaged the turf owned by the Downers Grove Park District on the northeast corner of Walnut and Burlington avenues, officials said. The damage indicated that an unknown driver and motor vehicle drove through the property in circles at maximum acceleration, police said. A second incident was reported at 8:34 p.m. Dec. 26, when a resident called to report the remains of a Park District sign laying on his doorstep in the 6200 block of Brookbank Road, police said. Black bears, cougars and gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

Drivers on tollways in the western suburbs could reach their destination a little faster in 2015. And, for the first time, if a boater along the Cal-Sag Channel or Fox River operates under the influence, the boat can be impounded. Likewise, if underage kids are caught drinking inside cars, motor homes, campers and private planes, their parents now can be charged with a crime. As Illinois residents begin a new year, they face 220 new laws that took effect Jan. 1, approved by lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn. The highlights cover various issues, from transportation to wild animals.
under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstate 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit increase is warranted. Then it would require approval from the tollway’s board of directors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect. Another bill now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling them over for minor traffic violations such as speeding. Illinois was one of six states that allowed police to confiscate licenses for minor traffic violations, according to Illinois Senate Republicans.

DOWNERS GROVE – Giggling vandals were seen trying to remove a street sign at Curtiss Street and Glenview Avenue in the early hours of Dec. 27, 2014, according to Downers Grove police. Police were called to the scene about 2 a.m. Dec. 27, when a resident smoking a cigarette
outside heard giggling, officials said. Two male juveniles wearing hoodies, one gray and one black, were seen wiggling a sign back and forth in an apparent attempt to remove it, police said. The pair ran off at one point but then returned to finish their work a minute later before fleeing on foot after pulling out the street sign, ac-
cording to police. The post and signs were not damaged, but the base that had been cemented in had been torn out and will need to be replaced, officials said. Damage is estimated to be $100, according to police. To report information regarding this crime, call the Downers Grove Police Department at 630-434-5600.
Downers Grove resident loses $6,500 in scam SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – A Downers Grove woman was the victim of phone scam Dec. 28 that netted the fraudsters $6,500. The woman, originally from Poland and who speaks very little English, was contacted by a woman pretending to be her daughter-in-law, stating the victim’s son had been arrested for striking a person with
his vehicle and taken to jail in Cook County, police said. The female impersonator spoke Polish and said $6,500 in bond money was needed to release him from jail, officials said. The impersonator told the woman to give the money to an attorney who would wait outside her residence, police said. The woman borrowed the money from friends and put it in an envelope, police said. She met a man outside
her residence wearing a gray skull hat who spoke “perfectly good Polish,” accepted the envelope of money and walked away from her, officials said. The woman was informed about the “grandparent scam” that involves criminals preying on elderly to steal money, officials said. Anyone with information regarding this scam may call the Downers Grove Police Department at 630-434-5600.

Township investing in caring communities One of the things I love about this time of year is the extra generosity of heart that seems to overflow from the people around me – be it an extra pair of hands to help load up a car to bring toys to a domestic violence shelter or someone letting you into traffic during a busy commute on Ogden Avenue. Everywhere I look, it feels like everyone is in the mood to go that extra mile. COMMUNITY This excites me because at the VOICE township I think one of the Lori most important roles we play Wrzesinski is working with community to make our world a better place. On Dec. 8, 2014, we were able to thank some of those community members who selflessly give of their time, energy and other resources to make Downers Grove Township what it is: a great place to work and live. There are so many individuals and organizations we collaborate with that it is always difficult to choose who we want to acknowledge. Reflecting on 2014, two major programs stood out as worthy of the extra special recognition at our annual luncheon. Our Senior Advisory Council and SALT. (Seniors and Lawmen Together) committee worked tirelessly to launch its first Car Care Clinic for seniors. While many were involved in organizing this highly successful event Sept. 20, there were three who really demonstrated their commitment to community with their efforts. Cpl. Mike Urso of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, Lynn Dralle of the Westmont Fire Department and Alice Krampits of the Westmont Park District Senior Center were humble as they accepted a small token of our thanks for the level of dedication they contributed to this program and so many others in our township. Another group of individuals who continue to inspire me with their insight, compassion and good hearts are those high school students who serve in the township’s peer jury program. Just celebrating the completion of its 14th year, the program would not have the impact it does without their dedication. This year, we highlighted three who all started as freshman and now, as seniors, will leave behind big shoes to fill. Surrounded by proud parents and grandparents, we were able to thank Bob Keding and Rucha Patel from Downers Grove South High School and Damian Margarites from Downers Grove North High School. Their outstanding demonstration of character has been a constant source of inspiration to me. The township always has tried to collaborate with the communities within our borders to make them places we can all be excited and proud to be a part of, and we want our partners in these endeavors to know how much we appreciate and value each and every one of them.

Lilliana Jaeger shows off her winning fire escape plan with Downers Grove firefighters.
Four Downers Grove third-graders won a ride to school in December thanks to winning the Home Escape Fire Safety contest sponsored by the Downers Grove Fire Department. After reviewing all plans and selecting those showing the best emergency fire escape routes from their homes, third-graders Hayden Worth, Ksenia Baatz, Lilliana Jaeger and Gabriella Okuku were each driven to school on the Downers Grove Fire Department fire truck. More than 400 Downers Grove students submitted entries to the contest. After a very successful debut last year, Pizza Wars is returning to District 99. The local school district will raise funds for learner grants for the enrichment of District 99 curriculum at the event, at which seven local pizzerias will offer samples of their pizza slices for an entry fee. The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15 at South High School. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

No more fireworks at midnight New Year’s Day
This is in regards to New Year’s [Eve and Day] celebrations. I would like to address all these people who feel the need to bring their neighbors into their celebrations by letting off fireworks at midnight. It’s very disturbing. It’s very unnecessary. And if you want to celebrate, celebrate on your own. But don’t involve all your neighbors.

DOWNERS GROVE – The hum of sewing machines doesn’t mask the laughter of a group of sewers as they work in concert to create colorful pillowcases for cancer patients. Founded in Pennsylvania in 2002 by Cindy Kerr who made pillowcases for her hospitalized son, ConKerr Cancer is now in 120 cities nationwide, Downers Grove included. Friendly Stitches Sew & Vac on 63rd Street has been hosting ConKerr Cancer on the third Tuesday of the month for more than a year, according to Ellyn Nicodem, co-owner of the sewing shop. We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Trojans take title at Romeoville Christmas Classic By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A late game-winning shot from fouryear Downers Grove North center David Edwards helped the Trojans clinch the Romeoville Christmas Classic on Dec. 30, 2014. Edwards, who made his season debut in the tournament opener after missing the first month of the season while rehabbing an injury, converted a tie-breaking layup with three second left in the championship game against Oak Forest, sealing a 51-49 DGN victory. “The stat sheet doesn’t reflect the presence he has in the low post and the confidence he gives his teammates,” Downers Grove North head coach Jim Thomas said of the 6-foot-7 senior who finished with five points. With the game knotted at 49 and less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Trojans guard Jordon Kedrowski charged into the offensive zone where he was met by a swarm of Oak Forest defenders. Instead of swinging the ball around the perimeter, Kedrowski knifed through defense and into the key, feeding a wide open Edwards, who then sunk an uncontested layup. “You have your all-tournament guys and your MVP, but that play doesn’t develop without Jordan [Kedrowski],” Thomas said. “I thought he showed a

Tournament MVP Devin Blake had the hot hand early, scoring 14 of his teamhigh 15 points in the first half as North led 33-24 at halftime.
“I thought the whole team came ready to play tonight; our offense was in a nice groove in the first half,” Blake said. “But credit Oak Forest, they battled back and made it a game in the fourth quarter.” A Kedrowski 3 to open the fourth quarter pushed the Downers Grove North advantage to 10 points, but Oak Forest wouldn’t go away, cutting the lead to six with two minutes remaining before tying the game
in the final 30 seconds. The Trojans advanced to the championship of the Romeoville Christmas Classic after victories against Argo, Plainfield Central and Reavis. Blake led the boys with 16 points in a 64-48 victory against Argo on Dec. 26, 2014, while Kedrowski and Myles Farley chipped in with 12 each. The Trojans then cruised to a 67-46 win against Plainfield on Dec. 27 behind 18 points from
forward Matt Mahlke. The 6-foot-6 Mahlke also paced the Trojans offense with 16 points during a 61-42 victory against Reavis in the semifinals. Mahlke and Blake were both named to the Romeoville Christmas Classic all tournament team while Blake earned tournament MVP honors. The four straight wins is a season high for Downers Grove North, which will resume play at York on Friday after a nine-day break. “This is an exciting win, but we have to use this to propel us into the new year and do a better job taking care of business in the West Suburban Silver conference,” Thomas said.

one; it’s a really great honor.
Soulier: You scored 14 of your 15 points in the first half. What was the key to your hot start?
Blake: I felt really focused tonight. I had a chance to do some extra shooting before the game and really find my shot. I just wanted to help my team in any way possible tonight and I was able to get some open looks and knock down some shots in the first half.
Soulier: Do you think this is a turning point for your team? Blake: I think so. Getting Dave Edwards back [from an injury] gives us a good inside presence. Hopefully this is when we turn the season around and continue this run in the second half of the season.
