Maple Ave. condo project gains committee OK

kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Plans for a five-story condominium to be built on Maple Avenue gained momentum last week with the Downers Grove Planning Committee’s recommendation to approve.

Should the project receive final approval from the Village Council, it likely would result in the demolition of a historic 19th Century home known locally as the Edwards House.

The developer has proposed to build a 136,000 square foot, 55-unit building at 936-942 Maple Ave. The application states there will be a 76-vehicle parking deck, fitness area, lobby and club room.

The unanimous decision by the planning committee to approve The Marquis on Maple Condominium development was a blow to a group of community members who had been trying to save the Queen Anne Victorian-style home.

Downers Grove resident Tom Nybo has been heading up efforts to bring attention to the community about the potential demolition of the historic home.

“It’s an emotional topic,” Nybo said. “The house has been around since the 1890s. They are taking away a major piece of Downers Grove.”

The property at 942 Maple Ave. in Downers Grove, known as the Edwards House, is a 1890s Queen Anne-style Victorian home and is listed in the village’s historical property survey as architecturally significant.

The Edwards House is located in the downtown business district and was last used as an office space. Multi-family structures such as condominium buildings are allowed in the downtown business district, according to village special-use permits.

The planning commission’s vote is not final, but is a recommendation to the village council. Stan Popovich, planning manager for the village of Downers Grove, said the next step will be a first reading at the Nov. 18 village council meeting.

“The public will be able to speak, and council members and the mayor will have a discussion and depending upon the discussion, it may be up for a vote at the following meeting,” Popovich said.

In the fight to save the Edwards House, one alternative that had been discussed was implementing a historic district along Maple Avenue.

According to Popovich, there is not a historic district application on file with the village.

“We didn’t make the numbers of signatures to make a historic district,” Nybo said.

“After all this is done, we will sit down with the village and see if we can come up with an ordinance that is more resident friendly.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North High School honored more than 100 U.S. veterans at an all-school assembly Friday for Veterans Day. Veterans – who served in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Cold War, Kosovo and Iraq/Afghanistan – and their families were in attendance. Students and staff members who have family members serving on active duty also were recognized.

School performances in-

cluded the North High Wind Ensemble, the North High Chamber Choir and North High A Capella Choir. The speech team also presented a history of Veterans Day. Guest speakers included Ron Wolflick, a 35-year law enforcement veteran, the son of a WWII veteran, and volunteer with Honor Flight Chicago; and Capt. Mike Barbour, a Vietnam veteran who serves on the board of the DuPage County Veterans Assistance Commission and the U.S. Chamber with the Hiring Our Heroes job placement program.

Resident offers free haircuts to veterans

By KELLI MURRAY DOWNERS GROVE – For Lanette Stanley-Yurt, America’s veterans can’t be thanked enough. Working in conjunction with the Downers Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 503, Stanley-Yurt organized Freedom Cuts, an event offering all veterans a free haircut.

Stanley-Yurt, a cosmetologist, will bring three barbers along with her to set up shop from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the VFW, 5101 Belmont Road.

The Downers Grove native Stanley-Yurt hails from a military family, so the subject is close to her heart. Her father was in the Marine Corps.

Two female cousins are serving in the Air Force. She has witnessed how her brotherin-law’s three deployments to the Middle East has been life changing to her sister’s family.

“I don’t believe a veteran should pay for a haircut,” Stan-

“We weren’t always apart, but now we are raising a family over Skype,” Likens said. School, extracurricular events, homework, play dates and birthday parties keep her mind busy, she said. “We look forward to being a family again.”

Likens said she misses the camaraderie she shared with other military spouses from when she lived on base with her husband but feels moving to be closer to family was the right decision.

“I can’t ask for a better village than where I am,” she said.

Ray Adams is the chaplain and manager at the VFW and helped Stanley-Yurt find space at the post for the event, which is the first of its kind for the VFW. “It’s really generous of her to want to do this, so we are donating the hall to her,” Adams said. “I plan on getting my haircut.”

SCALING Q: What is scaling?

A: Scaling is the procedure your dentist or your hygienist performs to scrape accumulated calculus from the base of your teeth. Calculus is formed when the clear, sticky film of plaque that forms on the teeth hardens. It can build up both above and below the gum line. Left untreated, it can be a contributing factor to gum disease, also called periodontal disease.

To scrape off the hardened plaque, your dentist or hygienist may use a hand scaler, which is a small instrument that at one end may be shaped like a sickle, a hoe, a curved spoon, or a file, depending on which shape is appropriate for your situation. The dentist or the hygienist will gently insert the tip of the instrument beneath the gum line, press it against the tooth and pull toward the crown to break up and remove the hardened plaque.

Scaling is generally not a painful process because the pressure being applied against the tooth’s enamel, which has no sensitivity.

There could be mild discomfort when the instrument is pressed against the gum. If at any time the procedure hurts, tell the dentist or hygienist and he or she will stop. In some cases the dentist may be able to give you a topical anesthetic to numb the pain. Thorough brushing and flossing at home and regular visits to the dentist will prevent the build up of calculus.

Vegetable thief targets Downers Grove garden plot DOWNERS GROVE – Vegetables were reported stolen from a Downers Grove community garden that’s overseen by the park district, according to police.

A man who utilized three garden plots at Mar-Duke Farm, located at the corner of 68th and Main streets, reported the theft to police Oct. 27, according to the report.

In addition to vegetables being stolen, the man also reported that steel stakes that border his garden also were taken, the report stated.

The estimated loss of the vegetables and gardening stakes is about $200, according to the report.

Mar-Duke Farm offers plots to gardeners that are 20 by 30 feet as well as elevated plots that are 4 by 11 feet, according to the Downers Grove Park District website.

Zolnierowicz currently is working as director of Rauner’s transition team and previously was deputy campaign manager of Citizens for Rauner, Inc., according to a news release from Rauner’s campaign website.

Making an introduction to District 58 community I joined the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 team as its community relations coordinator in late August. In this role, I organize and share news with District 58 staff, families and the greater community.

Every day, I witness teachers and administrators who inspire students and colleagues with creative challenges. For COMMUNITY example, Dr. Meg Van Dyke VOICE motivated her O’Neill sevMegan enth-graders to use science to Hewitt build homemade air conditioners when they complained of the heat last August. And when students had Columbus Day off, teachers spent the day planning innovative classroom ideas they previously lacked the time to initiate. The students I’ve met are also smart, really smart! When I visit classrooms, students clamor to tell me what they’re learning and why they like it. This makes my job as a communicator and storyteller so much fun! They also like school. For instance, District 58 hosts The Reading Games, a friendly competition in which students form teams, read 15 books and compete to answer questions about the books. Team reservations for the next Reading Games opened Nov. 3. Within hours, 70 teams signed up and a waiting list had already formed.

Finally, when I meet parents and community members, it all makes sense. Your commitment to Downers Grove is the foundation to District 58’s success. I’m so impressed by our parents’ dedication to education and the community’s support of our strong neighborhood schools. For example, the Downers Grove District 58 Education Foundation annually awards grants to teachers who have a good idea with a solid plan but lack the funding. This year, the foundation awarded nearly $28,000 to 16 teachers and groups of teachers. Also, our schools’ PTAs organize a wide variety of programs and events that supplement what students learn in the classroom as well as build social emotional learning skills.

Their initiatives range from art education programs to volunteer opportunities to book fairs and beyond. This dedication truly enhances the learning environment for everyone.

I moved to Downers Grove after working four years for the city of Kansas City, Mo., government. Kansas City is an exciting place to live, work and visit, and I am grateful for my time spent there. But now that I’m back to my roots – I grew up in Chicago’s western suburbs – everything feels right. District 58 has got it going on, and I’m happy to be a part of it.

I read about the five streets on West Avenue. Cars pile up, they wait for the light to change and they speed and cut people off, just to be sure they’re one of the six cars or so that make the lights. DOWNERS GROVE – The Illinois Standards Achievement Test scores have been released and parents, students and teaching staff at District 58 have something to smile about.

According to the results, 77 percent of District 58 students met or exceeded the ISAT exam standards, compared to 59 percent of students statewide who met or exceeded the standards.

ISAT standards were developed

by Illinois teachers and district curriculum and assessment directors based on the Illinois Learning Standards adopted in 1997, according to the ISAT website. The ISAT measures all students in math and reading, and fourth- and seventh-graders only in science. The report card was administered in the 20132014 school year.

“The reality is that not every kid is the same,” Rich said. “Using classroom data we are able to say this is what the (student) needs to give them that instruction. If we can provide instruction at their skill level, we can make that data more powerful and teach kids where they are. “ Reading and math scores for District 58 students exceeded state averages. In reading, 72 to 81 percent of District 58 students met or exceeded state standards, compared to the state average which is 55 to 59 percent, according to reports. In math, 69 to 82 percent of District 58 students met or exceeded standards, compared to 56 to 64 percent of the state average, reports state.

“The data from ISAT shows it’s all working together, guided reading and math focused on student learning and growing,” Rich said. “The greatest thing we are starting to see is we are setting goals, and kids want to be aware of how they are doing.

It’s exciting to see what they are trying to accomplish.”

The report card also included student academic growth, which is a measure of students advancing from one performance level on the ISAT to another level year to year, according to the Illinois Report Card website.

The results indicate District 58 surpassed the state average and showed positive growth in both reading and math.

“I am very happy to see District 58 once again excelling on all exams,” Superintendent Kari Cremascoli said in a statement.

“These assessments tell one piece of District 58’s success story. hese next few months include the time of year where many of us are in larger groups and noisier places than normal. With the carving of the turkey and the trimming of tree and other festivities, hearing our friends, family, music, and lively conversation can be the most cherished part of the holiday season.

A person with hearing loss may not feel the same way. It can be a time of frustration, feeling let out, and isolation.

Background noise can cause listening diiculty even for persons with normal hearing; so for persons with any amount of hearing loss, the diiculty is oten greater.

If you will be spending time with a friend or loved one during the holidays that has hearing diiculties, here is a few tips to help them out: ~ Gain their attention before starting a conversation either through eye contact or a small tap on their arm. ~ Look at them directly when you speak without covering your face. ~ We all become excited when speaking, but be sure to speak just a bit slower and clearly. ~ he holidays can be a good time to have a thoughtful conversation on how hearing afects the family dynamics and how you don’t want them to miss out.

With the support of family and friends, a person with hearing problems may be more able to accept their need to get hearing loss treatment and may be more willing to take the irst steps to better hearing.

If you are the one with the hearing diiculties, there are things you can do to help yourself. ~ First and foremost have your hearing evaluated BEFORE you are in those diicult situations to see if hearing devices would be a beneit for you. Most hearing loss is gradual over years of time, and many don’t realize how bad it has become until they are put in those group situations. Hearing devices are much better sounding and looking than they were before. ~ Try to pick the least noisy place to sit if possible. ~ Ask people to speak one at a time. ~ Ask for any background music to be turned down.

Untreated hearing loss can leave you out of the laughter and conversation around you.

OBITUARIES DR. JOSEPH C. BOWE Dr. Joseph C. Bowe, PhD, age 93, passed away November 4, 2014, surrounded by his family at his home in Downers Grove.

Beloved husband of the late Alice Marie Bowe, nee Gordon; loving father of Mary (Jerry) Buch, Joseph (Lisa Gerontes), Anne (Fred) Wehrli, Alice (Bob) Dodge, John (Susan), and Jim (Sue); cherished grandfather of 27, greatgrandfather of 3.

Active parishioner of St. Joseph Parish in Downers Grove, for 61 years. Dr Bowe served his country as a scientist on the Manhattan Project, followed by a distinguished career as a nuclear physicist at Argonne National Laboratory. His love of academia led him to Benedictine University where, through his retirement, he devoted himself to his students. Joseph's life revolved around his faith, family and his tireless efforts to promote the sanctity of life.

Marion Ann Kenney died Friday, October 24, 2014, in Phillips, Wisconsin, at the age of 86.

Possessing a strong, quiet spirit, Marion devoted her life to loving and serving others. She was loved by all who knew her.

Marion was born June 6, 1928, in Chicago. She grew up on the south side of Chicago, in a home rich with love. Her parents, George and Margaret Jandacek, taught her how to share and live with dignity. For a period of time during the Great Depression, Marion, her parents, and older brother, George, moved in with Marion's grandparents and aunt when the family bungalow on Loomis Boulevard was rented out to make ends meet (the frame house that the extended family shared, and the brick bungalow on Loomis to which Marion and her immediate family eventually returned, lived clearly in Marion's memories all through her life). Later, a little JANET R. HELMICK sister, Margaret, would complete Marion's childhood family. Young Janet Ruth Helmick, age 75.

Her life as a young woman was defined by the Brainerd Community Church, where she worshipped, served, and socialized while attending Calumet High School. She was remembered as a vivacious, energetic, and attractive woman. At church, she met her future husband, Norman A. Kenney, who had served in World War II, losing his older brother to the conflict. Marion's gentle spirit was a balm to the loss Norm suffered from the war, and she became his rock. They were married on September 10, 1949, and would remain soul mates until Norm's death on May 15, 2009.

Norm and Marion settled in Downers Grove, Illinois, where they were active members of the First United Methodist Church as well as the Phillips United Methodist Church. They became devoted parents of three children, Norman Paul, Mary, and Jan. Norm became an executive in the insurance industry, Marion became the chief executive of the house, also working as an executive assistant at George Williams College while raising three children and setting an example for giving unconditional love. Her children fondly remember "The Marion Kenney School of Etiquette," or Marion's insistence for acting with grace and dignity regardless of the circumstance.

Norm and Marion also made The Homestead a happy destination for family and friends, especially after Norm retired and they could spend more time in the Wisconsin north woods. Marion, who always ensured that The Homestead was a welcome home away from home, was known for keeping a loaf of cinnamon bread and a pot of egg coffee ready at all times.

During her life in Downers Grove, and at The Homestead, she passed on to her children and grandchildren the same appreciation for simple joys, such as taking walks amid the birch trees, reading a book by the fireplace or, in her later years, watching the loons on the Elk River.

At church and home, she had an exceptional talent for taking a personal interest in everyone she met. She was the master of small, quiet gestures and soft words of advice that guided her family and friends.

Those who knew her well also understood that she had a core of steel. She endured with quiet dignity enormous challenges that visited her body throughout her life, diphtheria as a child and a series of strokes during her adult life that would compromise her health in her final years. Even so, she retained many of the hallmarks that her

ny friends and family loved so dearly, the twinkle in her eyes, gentle company, an ability to share flashes of insight, and a deep, abiding warmth.

Marion is survived by her sister, Margaret Susan (Jon) Hawley of Frankfort, Michigan; son, Norman Paul (Brenda) Kenney of Houston, Texas; daughter, Mary Ann Kenney of Downers Grove, Illinois; daughter, Janice Margaret (David) Deal of Downers Grove, Illinois; grandsons, Zachary Warren Kenney of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Asher Andrew Kenney of Houston, Texas; and granddaughter, Marion Grace Deal of Downers Grove, Illinois.

Marion is interred at the Lakeside Cemetery in Phillips, Wisconsin.

WILLIAM KOZAK William “Bill” Kozak, age 98, of Geneva passed away Thursday November 6, 2014. He had been a long time resident of Geneva for over 50 years.

Bill was a forty two year employee of Griffen Wheel Company before his retirement in 1981. Starting in the foundry he was promoted to be Senior Purchasing Agent for the corporation. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran Serving aboard the U.S.S. Battle ship Tennessee before it sank in Hawaii. He was a college football player and avid golfer. He enjoyed sports all his life. He spent many years golfing with the Silver Foxes of St. John Neumann Church.

Bill is survived by his loving children, Steven and David (Anna); cherished grandchildren, Michell ( Brian) Hampton, Michael Waytena, Greg (Natasha) Kozak; dearest great-grandchild, Gianna Kozak; sister, Darlene Burham; also he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Florence Mary Kozak nee Watts; brother, John; and his sister in law, Betty; and his brother in law, Larry Burham.

Committal services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 12th at Resurrection Cemetery Geneva. There is no visitation.

DGS hosts International Career Fair SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove South High School students attended the International Career Fair, “Oh, the Places You Could Go,” Thursday in the school library.

About 40 organizations from a variety of industries were represented, including law and public safety, architecture/construction/engineering, health sciences, human services and hospitality/ tourism.

Students spoke to representatives and asked questions about specific industries, entry level positions and if a foreign language would be beneficial in a particular career.

Incumbent state Rep. Ron Sandack defeated Democrat challenger Liz Chaplin to retain his District 81 seat in the Nov. 4 election. With all precincts reporting, Sandack received 60 percent of the vote to Liz Chaplin’s 40 percent, according to the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will County Clerk websites.

“I am obviously pleased. I

am glad our race was positive – there was no negativity and that is the best way to proceed and it was a good outcome,” Sandack said.

Sandack, an attorney and the former mayor of Downers Grove, served in the Illinois Senate from 2010-13, before winning the 81st District seat.

The 81st District includes all or parts of Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, Bolingbrook, Woodridge and Darien.

DuPage voter turnout dips below 50 percent

Around 47 percent of registered voters in DuPage County turned out for the Nov. 4 election, according to the DuPage County Election Commission.

With all precincts reporting, 269,750 out of 587,216 voters participated in the election. The number will increase by about 10,000 when absentee ballots are added, according to Executive Director Robert Saar.

Saar said 47 percent falls below the average range from the last three governors’ races, which he said was between 50.5 and 55 percent.

A total of 288,680 out of the 558,929 registered voters participated in the 2010 election, a 51.5 percent turnout.

“Voters just aren’t turning out like they used to,” he said. “I know that we have more registered voters, but this is a sad trend.”

In March’s primary elections, a record-low 18.9 percent of registered voters cast votes.

Roskam wins re-election in U.S. House 6th District

Republican Peter Roskam easily secured his fifth term in the U.S. House, capturing roughly 67 percent of the vote Nov. 4 in an election night victory over Democratic challenger Michael Mason.

Roskam said his priorities will be righting the nation’s economy once he returns to Washington, D.C. to represent the 6th Congressional District for another two years.

A strong incumbent with House GOP leadership experience, Roskam served in the Illinois Senate from 2000 to 2006, after he represented the western suburbs in the Illinois House from 1992-98.

Voters approve refuse collection referendum

Incumbent DuPage County sheriff candidate John Zaruba won his re-election bid Nov. 4 after claiming 62 percent of the vote.

Zaruba, a Republican who has served as sheriff since 1997, had 158,983 votes cast in his name, according to preliminary election results. His challenger, Democrat Mike Quiroz, received 95,639 votes.

Zaruba and Quiroz were unopposed in their respective March primary elections.

Curran keeps county board seat in District 3

Woodridge resident John Curran was re-elected to represent the 3rd District in DuPage County over Democratic challenger Pamela Miles of Downers Grove in the Nov. 4 election.

Downers Grove Township voters approved a referendum Nov. 4 that will permit the township to contract refuse disposal companies for residents who reside in unincorporated areas.

The referendum received 63 percent support from voters, according to preliminary results from the DuPage County Election Commission website.

With voter approval, the township will seek bids from refuse haulers on behalf of unincorporated residents, with the goal of selecting just one hauler.

There are about 5,000 to 7,000 residents of unincorporated Downers Grove Township who would be affected by the resolution.

Zaruba wins re-election bid for DuPage sheriff

Republican Peter Breen was elected as the 48th District General Assembly representative after winning more than 90 percent of the vote Nov. 4.

Breen was the only candidate listed on the ballot, but he faced write-in challenger Marian Tomlinson of Glen Ellyn.

Breen beat incumbent Sandra Pihos in the March primary with 56 percent of the vote.

“I’m really honored by the overwhelming support of the people in my district,” he said.

“Our main focus was communicating our message to the voters and putting forward a positive, reform-minded agenda.”

Party. The incumbent Republican received 65 percent of the vote compared to Peickert’s 35 percent, according to preliminary election results.

Cronin was elected to his current office in 2010 following nine years in the Illinois General Assembly. He was also formerly the head of the DuPage County Republican Party.

Armand’s Pizzeria flavors artful space ELMHURST – Having heard the restaurant’s roots go back to 1956, and that a family recipe for thin-crust pizza is behind the longevity, we decided to visit Armand’s Pizzeria in downtown Elmhurst.

It was a Sunday evening, and the happy surprise of the day’s half-price ribs deal meant all our favorite food groups were covered.

The menu extends to Italian staples, as well as sandwiches, salads, steaks and its signature stuffed artichoke and baked clam appetizers.

Making the visuals of the dining room a standout are oversized artworks paying playful homage to Italy. One side celebrates famed visages from antiquity and the other salutes contemporary portraits with a fun vibe. An inviting bar offers a dozen stools for seating and several unobtrusive televisions nearby.

As we relaxed on a comfy banquette, our diligent server brought a bread basket with two choices. The standard slices paled in comparison to the marinara-and-spice focaccia bread that we happily polished off before it could cool.

Next, with ribs on our minds, we decided to turn a half slab into a shared appetizer. It was a perfect choice. The ribs were meaty and tender, bathed in a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce for rich, satisfying flavor that hit all the right notes. And given that it was a dinner item, it was accompanied by a hearty minestrone and a vegetable medley that had us feeling downright virtuous.

My dining companion had to try the thin-crust pizza, ordering it with the house-made Italian sausage, along with spinach, tomato and mushrooms. It came loaded with toppings on a crispy, cornmeal-dusted crust with a delicate tomato sauce base, and deeply fennel-infused sausage in the old-school tradition.

Armand’s Pizzeria delivers the goods on a tantalizing half slab of ribs. Heights and also offers Meaty and tender, they are bathed in a sweet and tangy barbecue fast-casual spots in communities including Wheaton and sauce.

Marsala, a dish featuring the aforementioned fortified wine for the mushroom-laced sauce. My plate arrived with a generously portioned chicken breast smothered in a sauce packed with wonderful mushroom slices.

After the richly satisfying ribs, I couldn’t do justice to it, and went home with another meal for us to share.

About to celebrate its 60th anniversary, Armand’s currently has a second full-service restaurant in Arlington

La Grange. About to join the family-owned enterprise is a full-service tavern featuring pizza and small plates that will adopt the original name from 1956 – Armand’s Victory Tap. It is scheduled to open at Yorktown Center in Lombard around Thanksgiving.

PEORIA – Downers Grove North senior Ryan Clevenger again showed why he is one of the best runners in the state.

On Saturday, Clevenger crossed the finish line in 14:24, good for fourth overall at the 3A state final at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Although the senior did not reach the podium, his finish was eight seconds better than his previous best time of the season, a 14:32 that he also recorded in Peoria.

Additionally, Clevenger improved upon his 2013 state final time, when he ran a 14:38 and came in seventh place.

Downers Grove North cross country coach John Sipple attributes Clevenger’s success to his dedication and work ethic.

“He has done a real nice job over his four years,” Sipple said. “It just shows what you can achieve if you put in the time, you are dedicated and you live that runners life style. Ryan he has come such a long way from his freshman year, improving his time by almost three minutes. It’s been amazing to see.”

The Trojan head coach added Clevenger’s attributes have also rubbed off on the underclassmen, and he has embodied everything that a team captain should be.

“His work ethic is definitely something to be desired,” Sipple said. “We talk a lot about the little things and how important they are – eating right, getting rest, mental preparation. He shows kids how to be great.

He was a fantastic team captain and is really passionate about the sport. He cares so much about the team and the younger runners.”

As a team, the Trojans finished 13th out of 26 teams.
