kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – As the new year nears, it’s time to revisit what made 2014 memorable. From stories regarding the local stormwater fee to renovations at the local library and hospital, this year’s top stories will live on long after the ball drops next week.

1. Out with the old What happened: Plans

for the Marquis on Maple five-story condominium to be built on Maple Avenue received the village’s stamp of approval Dec. 16. The developer has proposed to build a 136,000-square-foot, 55-unit building at 936-942 Maple Ave. Residents had spoken out strongly against the development, citing the inappropriate size for the neighborhood, traffic and safety concerns, in addition to the potential razing of a historic Queen-Anne style Victorian home known as the Edwards House. Currently, a plan is underway to try and move the house before construction on the development begins in the spring. Quote of note: “I think there’s little disagreement amongst anybody in this room that the Edwards House, if at all possible, should be preserved. Mayor Martin Tully

Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com

The property at 942 Maple Ave. in Downers Grove, known as the Edwards House, is an 1890s Queen Annestyle Victorian home and is listed in the village’s historical property survey as architecturally significant.

2. Moving on? What happened: Two Town

Hall meetings were hosted in December to provide information to residents on a proposed facilities project expected to cost $52 million. A leaking skylight and space constraints in the Downers Grove Police Station, as well as inefficient and outdated HVAC systems for both Village Hall and the police station, were issues pointed out to residents during a facilities tour. The Downers Grove for Responsible Government coalition has galvanized with a petition drive to place a referendum

is enforcing a new sign ordinance after a nine-year grace period. The ordinance only allows business signs to face driveable right-of-ways, like roads, and not train tracks, like the Metra/ BNSF line. The ordinance also doesn’t allow painted wall signs outside downtown. Robert Peterson’s Leibundguth Moving and Storage’s building is not located in the downtown business district and the back of his building faces the Metra tracks. He also has a sign advertising his business painted on the back of his building. After losing his final appeal with the village to keep his sign, Peterson filed a complaint against the village Dec. 8 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Peterson said the sign ordinance violates his First Amendment right to free speech.

Grove Public Library underwent a six-month renovation that cost $2.6 million and created several new small-group meeting and study spaces, a new teen center and a new space for science, technology, engineering and math. Light fixture replacement, new carpeting throughout the 67,000-squarefoot building and new furnishings also were installed. Quote of note: “We have been getting wonderful community response and we enjoy working in the fresh new space. It is a real credit to the people of Downers Grove that they have stuck right with us through six months of pretty active construction inside a building that never closed.” Library director Rick Ashton

worship and nonprofits in Downers Grove will not have to pay the village stormwater utility fee, effective Jan. 1. On Nov. 11, the village council voted 5-2 to pass an ordinance lifting the fee, which charges property owners a fee calculated by the amount of impervious surface area on a lot, from nonprofits. Churches had been protesting the utility fee, saying it cuts into the services they provide to residents of the community. Quote of note: “These are dollars that would be coming in to help ameliorate stormwater problems here in Downers Grove. If we don’t act to replace that revenue, we are going to see a reduction in maintenance activity and a reduction in capital activity.” Commissioner Greg Hose on voting against lifting the fee

Q: How can I overcome my fear of the dentist? A: First of all, you are not alone in having some sort of anxiety about going to the dentist. The apprehension often stems from a bad experience as a youngster that may have left you fearful of a particular dental procedure or with a general anxiety about going into a dentist’s office, or with a full-blown phobia. As a youngster, you may have had a procedure in which the dentist used too little anesthesia or applied it improperly. Dental phobia can also come from a fear of needles, which is not an uncommon fear, or from the whine of the drill. But be assured that dental technology has evolved considerably over the years. Anesthesia now comes in many forms and through new delivery systems. In some cases you may be able to listen to your favorite music instead of the dreaded whine of the drill. The most important thing is to find a dentist with whom you can talk and feel comfortable. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a dentist, talk with your friends about the dentists they use. They’ll be happy to help you find one you’re comfortable with. Once you find a dentist with whom you’re comfortable, ask him or her to explain the wide variety of anesthetic options that are available. Once you’ve re-established the practice of regular dental visits, you’re going to feel much better about yourself and your smile.

Are Dental Implants Right For You? SPONSORED BY

Tooth decay, gum disease, and injury can all lead to tooth loss, despite improvements in dental care through the years. For a long time, the only treatment options available for those with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. Dental implants, which are replacement tooth roots, are now available as an alternative to dentures. According to www.webmd.com, implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. There are many advantages to dental implants, states the website, including: * Improved appearance - implants look and feel like your own teeth. * Permanence and durability - implants fuse with bone to become permanent. * Improved speech - implants won’t slip or move around, like dentures can. * Comfort - implants don’t

Link Between Dance and Athletics SPONSORED BY

Strength, speed, power, agility, and flexibility are just some of the things a good athlete usually does to perform at a high level. You could say creative dance requires most of the same things, though that activity requires a different mental approach. Overall, it’s not out of bounds for a rough, tough athlete to find a creative edge by taking dance seriously. Benefits of Dance In 2003, PubMed published a study that looked at the effects of dance training on cross-country skiers. It concluded dance training had a “positive effect on speed and agility and on joint mobility…” Such studies indicate an athlete could improve his performance through the art, which was supported in the 2008 book “Creative Dance for Learning: The Kinesthetic Link” by Mary Ann Brehm and Lynne McNett. The authors concluded creative dance, or kinesthetic dance, can play up critical thinking skills and increase physical awareness.

On Pointe If ballet falls under creative dancing, some football players have shown it works for them. Back in his playing days, Herschel Walker took part in a performance of the Fort Worth ballet and went on to make dance part of his routine. High school coaches have had entire teams take classes as a way to enhance their flexibility and focus. Why it Can Work A creative dance exercise may prove beneficial for athletes since it can improve body awareness through imagery and visualization. It also develops efficiency in movement and recruitment of the correct muscle at the right time, reducing fatigue. The challenges of coordinating the body and brain in a dance can carry over to the field, where the athlete has to constantly employ critical thinking. “It (dance) engages cognitive and physical processes,” says Emily S. Cross, a former dancer and neurobiologist. Pure Vibe Dance 102 Chesnut Ave Westmont, IL 60559 630-861-0540

have to be removed. * Easier eating - no sliding dentures to worry about. Implants stay put. * Improved self-esteem implants improve your smile and help you feel confident. * Improved oral health - no other teeth are altered, they are kept intact. * Convenience - no removal is necessary as with dentures, and no messy adhesives. The first important step in determining a treatment plan is to meet with a professional who is trained and experienced in oral surgery and restorative dentistry. Dr. Barbara Webster is an experienced, trained expert who can guide you through the process. Success rates of dental implants vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed, but in general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. With proper oral care, implants can last a lifetime.

Weeks of debate included residents voicing concerns not only against the location of the development, but the potential razing of a historic 1890s Queen-Anne style Victorian home – known as the Edwards House – that currently sits on the property. Ultimately, however, the 55unit Marquis on Maple development project was passed 5-2 by the village council during the Dec. 16 council meeting, but only after Commissioner Bob Barnett made a motion for three conditions to be added to the special-use permit. Those conditions included eliminating the Maple Avenue loading zone, moving the front of the building back and “softening” the building. The loading zone issue on Maple Avenue is a concern that has been raised by residents, including Hilary Denk. “A moving van on the parkway with traffic and pedestrians is a safety issue,” Denk said. “There should be no loading or unloading coming off the parkway.” David Sosin, attorney for the developer, said the building was designed with loading and unloading to take place in the turnaround on the property. “That condition would not be a problem, the building was designed with the expectation and understanding that we would take care of that business on the property,” Sosin said. “Regarding setting the building back, that would not create a variation. It wouldn’t change the building by moving it back.” Much also has been made regarding the overall look of the five-story structure, with many residents saying it just doesn’t fit into the neighborhood. Barnett’s condition that the look be softened may address some residents’ concerns. “I don’t want to be the aesthetic police,” Barnett said. “This wasn’t the first design. This is an attempt to have the developers team work at softening it up. It wasn’t intended to change the height or number of units.” Sosin said the developer’s

architects can undertake softening the look of the building and will work with the village staff on suggestions. Currently, a plan is underway to try and move the historic home before construction on the development begins in the spring.

Downers Grove Public Library’s machines speak many languages What do you call a person who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call a person who speaks one language? An American. This old chestnut is no longer quite so true at the Downers Grove Public Library, at least as far as customers using our COMMUNITY seven self-checkout stations VOICE are concerned. Rick These clever machines, supplied by 3M Corporation, Ashton operate in 52 different languages, available on demand at the touch of a finger. When we first learned of this feature, our first thought was, “Nice, but not important.” We made sure that access for Spanish and Polish speakers was clearly provided, along with English, but we did not expect to have much use for the other 49 tongues. So we’ve been pleasantly surprised to learn we have customers who need and want to use other languages at the library. Recently, a man who spoke only Czech was able to check out several books (no pun intended). The books were in English, but not the checkout procedure. A few weeks earlier, a customer was delighted to find instructions in her native Asian script, in a language we could not identify. Her books were in English, too. These encounters are small examples of the way the Downers Grove Public Library is helping to knit together an ever-changing world. We offer books and other materials that inform and depict places and people we have never seen or imagined. At the same time, we help, in small ways, as people from those strange and distant places become our neighbors, colleagues and friends. By opening our doors, opening our books, and turning on our smart machines, we show our visitors a way into the America that we know and love. On your next visit, scroll down through the list of languages available on the screen of a self-checkout station. You’ll find an interesting window, an interesting connection to the wide world inside the Downers Grove Public Library.

SOUND OFF

Freedom of speech must be upheld

I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

Media needs to stop sensationalizing

I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. They are somewhat responsible for all the protests. The officer was doing his job.

Sound Off reflects opinions, not facts

the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

Time to act in D-200

A recent CUSD 200 report states we have the second-lowest property taxes collected per student, second-lowest tax rate, a below average operation expense per pupil, and below the state average in per pupil spending. Congratulations BOE – right? No, these austere numbers mean we can’t compete with surrounding districts to keep and maintain great teachers and provide current technology and services for our children. The last ED referendum was 30 years ago. Time to act.

Lombard leaf sweep is a good idea

I encourage you to not sign any referendum for a new police station and fire station on Ogden Avenue. For 30 years the residents of Burlington Highlands and Orchard Brook have had to put our lives on the line to try to enter onto Ogden Avenue or to exit into the Highlands from Ogden Avenue. With the increased toll fees, there has been a huge increase in traffic on Ogden and a big increase of semi trucks using Ogden now to avoid toll fees. We have been trying to get a control signal between Saratoga and Belmont for 30 years to no avail. Anyone who thinks there is no problem needs only to witness the hazard between 4 p.m. 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. every day with the amount of traffic. Regardless what the cost is to put the new station on Ogden Avenue in order to get a controlled signal, it will be worth every dollar to insure the safety of our residents in our area. I encourage the council to proceed with the project.

Now in her second year as the Downers Grove South head coach, Long boasts an strong starting five, as well as capable bench players. Moreover, Long has the girls believing in their ability. “They are a confident bunch; when we take the court, we think we can compete with anybody,” Long said. “We are a whole, collective unit. We don’t depend on any one person, and any five I put on the floor, I have confidence in their shooting ability.” Porlier led the Mustangs with 16 points against Hinsdale South. Easley scored 11 points while James chipped in six and Addyson Wesolowski added seven. For Porlier, who played on the Downers Grove South varsity team as a freshman, defeating Hinsdale South had extra significance because it had not been accomplished in her previous three seasons. “It feels great, we are playing at a very high level right now,” Porlier said. “We haven’t beat Hinsdale South since I have been here, which says a lot about their program and says a lot about how far we’ve come under coach Long. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into the tournament and during the second half of the season.”

DOWNERS GROVE – A buzzer-beating putback propelled the Downers Grove South girls basketball team to its sixth win of the season Friday against Hinsdale South. With the game tied at 44 with 30 seconds remaining, Mustangs forward Ava Porlier set up their half-court offense, winding the clock down to 10 seconds before driving to the basket and kicking it out to Vashae Easley. The senior balked at a 3, instead slashing toward the key and pulling up for a jumper at the left elbow. Her shot fell short, but DGS forward Kiera James out-rebounded two Hinsdale South defenders and quickly went back up for a layup as time expired. “Kiera can rebound over anybody,” Downers Grove South head coach Lyndsie Long said. “She’s a tremendous athlete and has the ability to leap out of the gym. She worked to get good positioning then went up and made a great play; it was a very exciting win for us.” The victory was in doubt early in the second half, as Hinsdale South began the third quarter with a 9-0 run to seize momentum in what had been a tightly contested first half. But back-to-back 3-pointers from Easley and Porlier gave the Mustangs life, and DGS entered the final frame trailing 34-31. Then, with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, an Easley bucket plus a foul put Downers Grove South back on top 42-41. A Hinsdale South free throw again knotted the game, and teams exchanged baskets in the waning minutes prior to James’ late-game heroics. The come-from-behind victory is just as symbolic as it is important to the Mustangs’

DGN, DGS, Benet vie for holiday tourney titles Next game: TBD Friday

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The winter holidays brings colder temperatures outside, but area gyms will heat up with boys and girls tournament action. Here’s the outlook for Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South and Benet:

What to watch: Downers Grove South has made significant strides under second-year head coach Lyndsie Long. The Mustangs have notched six wins and three conference victories through eight games, already approaching last season’s eight-win total. Seniors Vashae Easely and Ava Porlier are pacing the girls on offense while an overall commitment to team defense has held four of eight opponents to less than 40 points. The Mustangs began play at the Oswego East Holiday Classic against East Aurora on Monday. After a two-day break, the girls return to the court and could potentially face familiar foes Proviso East or York in the later rounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Downers Grove North

Tournament: Romeoville Invite Location: Romeoville High School, 100 N. Independence Blvd., Romeoville First game: 3:30 p.m. Friday vs. Argo

What to watch: For the first time in three seasons, Downers Grove North is participating in a holiday tournament. The Trojans halted a three-game losing streak with a 70-65 victory against Glenbard South on Dec. 16 to even their overall record at 4-4. First-year player Jordan Kedrowski continued his solid season with 17 points against Glenbard South. Up next for Downers Grove North is four games at the Romeoville Invite. The Trojans open play against Argo on Friday before facing either Lincoln-Way East or PF Central on Saturday. Also in the boys’ half of the bracket are Reavis, Oswego East, Lindblom and Shepard.

Downers Grove South

Tournament: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic

Location: York High School,

355 W. Saint Charles Road, Elmhurst First game: 7:30 p.m. Friday vs. Palatine

What to watch: Although it’s

been a rough start to the season for Downers Grove South, the upstart Mustangs notched their first win of the year against Willowbrook on Dec. 16. One of two standout sophomores on the Mustangs’ roster, guard Denis Alibegovic scored a teamhigh 19 points in the win. After back-to-back seasons at the Proviso West Tournament, Downers South is returning to York to partake in the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, where the Mustangs finished third in 2011. DGS opens play Friday against Palatine, one

Downers Grove South will square off against either Glenbard East or Naperville North in the second round. Last year’s champion, Lake Forest, also is among the 32-team field.

School, 701 W. Thomas Road, Wheaton Next game: To be determined Friday

Benet

Tournament: Pontiac Holiday

Tournament Location: Pontiac High School, 1100 E. Indiana Ave., Pontiac First game: 1 p.m. Monday vs. Bloom Township

What to watch: The Benet boys have not missed a beat since graduating four starters from its 2013-14 4A state final runner-up roster. The Redwings, who are 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the East Suburban Catholic after Thursday’s 46-42 victory against Marian Catholic, are getting valuable contributions throughout the lineup. Experienced seniors like Dan Sobolewski and Colin Bonnett, as well as newcomers like Jason Malonga, who logged a career-high 17 points in the win against Marian Catholic, create depth and a tough matchup for the rest of the ESCC. But the Redwings surely will be tested at the highly competitive Pontiac Holiday Tour-

Benet will face Bloom Township in the first round and either Danville or second-seeded Curie in the second. Simeon, Aurora West and Plainfield North are the three other seeded teams at the tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Downers Grove North

Tournament: Bill Neibch Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Location: Wheaton North High

What to watch: Downers Grove North is searching for consistency after an up-anddown first half of the season. The Trojans shot out of the gate with a third-place finish at the Rachel Bach Tournament and consecutive victories against Hinsdale Central and OPRF but then lost back-to-back contests against conference foes Lyons Township and Proviso West. Junior guard Jaida Green leads the Trojans in scoring with 18.4 points per game. Downers Grove North (5-3, 2-2) is the three seed at the Bill Neibch tournament and began play Monday against Waubonsie Valley. Glenbrook South is the top seed in the bracket while West Suburban Silver opponents Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central also are part of the 16-team field. Championship and consolation games will be Saturday.

Downers Grove South

Tournament: Oswego East Holiday Classic Location: Oswego East High School, 1525 Harvey Road, Oswego

lic Girls Basketball Christmas Tournament n Location: Montini Catholic High School, 19W070 16th St., Lombard n First game: 9:45 a.m. Friday vs. Zion-Benton

What to watch: New coach, same story for the Benet girls basketball team. After 629 victories in 29 years, Redwings head coach Peter Paul stepped down after last season, passing the head coaching reins to former assistant coach Joe Kilbride. Under Kilbride, the Redwings are undefeated through 11 games and will be one of the teams to beat in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Following a championship at the Naperville Central TipOff Tournament and an impressive showing at the Benet-Naperville North Holiday Tournament, the Redwings will partake in the Montini Catholic Girls Basketball Christmas Tournament. Arguably the toughest, most competitive girls holiday tournament in the state, Benet will open play against Zion-Benton before facing either undefeated Geneva or St. Joseph in Round 2. Benet could potentially face defending 3A state champion Montini in the third round.

Suburban Life ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Westmont Senior | Basketball Why he was selected: Rebellato scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to cap an 18-5 second-quarter run and power the Sentinels to a 60-40 win against Coal City.

Soulier: It seems like you got off to a hot start against Coal City and kept the momentum rolling into the second half. Rebellato: Yeah, I was real-

ly feeling it that night. Credit my teammates, they could tell I had the hot hand and did a great job of looking for me, finding me in the open court and executing our offense.
