Police: Fire at school believed to be arson

DOWNERS GROVE – Hillcrest Elementary School, 1435 Jefferson Ave., had a small fire at the school caused by Molotov cocktails. The fire occurred between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. The Downers Grove Fire Department was first on scene and extinguished the fire with a few buckets of water before contacting the police department because of signs the blaze was intentionally set, according to police. An odor of gasoline, a 750 ml vodka bottle, a 16-ounce pineapple orange juice bottle and a men’s white tank top apparently used to stuff the neck of both bottles were found at the scene, officials said. No damage to the school was reported, police said. To report information regarding the incident, call the police department at 630-434-5600.

PERICORONITIS Q: What is pericoronitis? A: The word comes from Greek and Latin and literally means “inflammation around the crown”. Pericoronitis is almost always associated with the eruption of a third molar, more popularly known as a wisdom tooth. It is a result of a wisdom tooth not being able to fully erupt through the gum. The condition is more commonly known as an impacted wisdom tooth. Pericoronitis is a condition that generally occurs in a patient between the ages of 17 and 24, the time of life when wisdom teeth are commonly attempting to erupt. Bacteria can get into the space between the gum and the tooth and cause a painful infection and swelling. In extreme cases, the swelling can extend beyond the jaw and into the cheeks and neck. Such cases, unfortunately, almost always call for the extraction of the impacted tooth in order to eliminate the infection and avoid damage to other teeth. Extracting the impacted tooth almost always calls for the skills and training of an oral surgeon, a dentist who has gone on for special training as a surgeon. Depending on the circumstances, the oral surgeon may elect to do the surgery in his office or in a hospital. Talk with your dentist about wisdom teeth and the issues that can come with them.

Downers Grove facilities plan spawns a coalition creation By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Two Downers Grove neighbors discussing the proposed facilities plan project for the village hall, police department and the fleet maintenance facility have joined forces to create the Downers Grove for Responsible Government coalition to bring awareness of the project to residents. Because of the large scale of the proposed project – the village has stated the cost could be about $52 million – coalition founders Tim Harms and Tim Werner started a petition drive in November to place an advisory question on the April 7 ballot to gauge resident opinion regarding the project. “The objective is to get the question on the ballot and to get people educated on the topic,” Werner said. Eight percent of voters who voted in the last gubernatorial general election would need to sign the petition – equaling 1,551 signatures, according to DuPage County Election Commission Election Division Manager Chuck Hinds. Harms said at least three dozen people have been gathering signatures in support of the petition, and presently they have more than 2,000 sig-

Neither Harms nor Werner have any background in local government, and Harms’ attendance at one of the Town Hall meetings discussing the facilities plan was a new experience for him. “I heard about the proposal and I wanted to understand it because it sounded like it was going to be big expenditure for the town,” Harms said. The Town Hall opened his eyes with the projects’ importance because of the amount of people who showed up and asked questions, he added. The subject of placing a referendum question on the ballot for this project was raised during the Town Hall meetings. endum question. “We are doing our job, not through trying to put together a real head scratcher of a referendum question that might not be relevant by the time it’s voted on because the plan could be different,” Mayor Martin Tully said during Dec. 6 Town Hall meeting. “This is the way to really engage with the community – to have town hall meetings, continue the conversation and identify those decision points and forks in the road.” According to the village, both village hall and the police station are in below average condition and do not provide modern work environments. Additionally, both facilities have outdated buildings HVAC systems that will require significant investment to replace. There have been several options presented and discussed in public meetings earlier this year, but the preferred option, according to village documents, is to demolish the existing village hall and police station and construct a new police station on Ogden Avenue with a commercial development. The village has stated Ogden Avenue TIF District funds and a general obligation bond supported by property taxes would be allocated to pay for the project. Site development and design would begin in 2015 with construction starting the following year. Phase 2 includes a new village hall that would be constructed at the Civic Center site along with a planned 200unit multifamily residential development. Village documents indicate a new TIF district for this property would be implemented, and the sale of the land to a developer and the property taxes from the development would pay for the new village hall. “This discussion brings a lot of interest,” Werner said. “We feel now is the time to take action. The overall feeling is there is a need is to get people more involved and help them be informed.”

Blvd. is independently owned – to screen the movie, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists instructed to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The flick has been surrounded with controversy since Sony announced the film wouldn’t be released following a cyber hacking of the company that included threats to any theaters that planned to screen the movie. Sony since flip-flopped on that decision, though many of the large movie theater chains haven’t backed off their decision not to show the movie. Scott Potter, marketing director for Hollywood Blvd., said the theater, 1001 W. 75th St., will have “increased security presence” while screening the movie. “We don’t have any big concerns because the Department of Homeland Security said there is no imminent threat,” Potter said, adding that the theater is working with Woodridge Police. On Monday, Potter said the shows on Christmas Day and during the weekend went without any incidents. The shows were sold out all weekend and Hollywood Blvd. saw record presale numbers for its three Christmas Day showings. Potter said the decision to show the movie had deeper meaning for the Woodridge theater than just ticket sales. “It’s important for freedom of speech and it’s important for our country. As an independent theater we wanted to be part of this history,” Potter said.

From Downers Grove to New York, students are a source of pride If you’ve ever attended a community event, chances are you’ve experienced the tremendous artistic talents of our high school students. Maybe you’ve spotted them in numerous community parades, including Independence Day, Memorial Day or the annual Tree Lighting in Downers Grove. In the summer, they play jazz riffs in Fishel Park. On Thanksgiving morning, they sing and perform at the annual Bonfield Express, a fundraiser named in honor of District 99 Teacher Jim Bonfield. Our students’ talents are appreciated near – and far and wide. They’ve traveled extensively in Illinois and across the U.S. One highlight last January was the South High Mustangs performing at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Internationally, our students have performed in numerous places in Europe. One highlight in 2011 was the North High Trojans performing at the New Year’s Day Parade in London. North High and South High share the spotlight equally, and on March 2, 2015, students will tour together and perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. We are filled with great anticipation for this trip, and have been rehearsing with professional guest musicians to prepare. Tickets are available at www.carnegiehall.org. We’ve also reached out and invited District 99 alumni in the New York area to attend. When our students take their show on the road, they represent everyone back at home – and they take this responsibility seriously. The highest compliments we receive are not only for the quality of their performance, but also for the conduct of their character. Both on and off the stage, our students are poised and respectful. The opportunities our students have at home and abroad are a direct result of our community’s commitment to the arts in the schools. All sides of town are united when it comes to supporting our programs. We know this professionally, and also personally: each of us is raising a family in the community. Thank you for your support of our musical, visual and performing arts. We hope to see you for any of our performances in 2015. You are always welcome to attend – both at home and on the road!

I believe the people of Downers Grove should be able to vote on whether our town should build a new Village Hall and police station. Someone said people shouldn’t have the opportunity to vote on this issue because a traffic signal is needed in their neighborhood. Putting up a new traffic signal costs a couple hundred thousand dollars, not $50 million. I could support putting a traffic signal there, but that unrelated issue should not limit the ability of people to make decisions for their community. This is a big change for Downers Grove, and the people should have the right to vote on what they think about this proposed new Village Hall and police station.

By Gina Kraman The physical rigors of taking ballet classes are understood – the stretching, jumping, twirling, and repeating. And the benefits known: greater fitness, flexibility, and muscle tone. But improved career performance? Most ballet students don’t seek to become professional ballet dancers. They move on to other jobs, and according to former ballet student and businesswoman Sarah Jukes, perform those jobs quite well, thanks to ballet. Jukes believes that ballet students have learned to be prepared, teachable, flexible in mind (not just body), fast learners, hard workers, and team players. “These elements are vital for success in dance, and also in the modern work place.” Capitalizing on such skills, Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) offers ballet lessons at its Westmont studios to train dancers from toddlers to pre-professionals. Students take lessons, and execute their training in periodic

performances. “We believe that a classical ballet foundation is the basis for any of today’s dance styles. We strive to nurture children and adults in the beauty, discipline, and art of dance,” according to SCB. What makes ballet training so valuable? Like all dance, ballet requires physical strength to learn steps and train for a performance. Some believe that the intensity of dance rivals training for sports, with burst of intensity needed to accomplish goals. Research shows that ballet dancers’ aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance, and agility are superior to non-dancers. Ballet training also enhances posture, grace, and coordination. Classical ballet classes traditionally start with students working both sides of their bodies at the “barre.” This horizontal wooden railing provides support for dancers doing exercises with increasing levels of difficulty. The remainder of the class occurs in the “main space” where dancers execute their disciplined routines.

Model railroad club attracts train enthusiasts of all ages

Luckily for residents of Downers Grove, the Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 57 model railroad club meets twice a month at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Downers Grove for train enthusiasts of all ages. “We are the only youth-oriented model train club around that invites kids to run their own trains,” said Calvin Christy, 68, adviser for the group. Founded in 1993 by Scouts and their fathers, Venture Crew 57 welcomes boys and girls ages 14 to 21. LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

A year after capturing their first state trophy with a second-place finish at the 2013 state meet, the Trojans girls swimming team repeated the feat Nov. 22 at the state meet at Evanston High School by scoring 118 points to tie Rosary for second place. Led by a great senior class that includes Division I recruits Gabriele Serniute (Illinois) and Emily Albrecht (Ohio State), as well as University of Chicago signee Daria Wick, DGN won a sectional title before the state final. At Evanston, North dominated the relays, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle

relay, second in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Serniute also took second in the 200 individual medley, while Albrecht finished fourth in the 50 freestyle.

Ryan Clevenger finishes fourth at 3A cross country state final

Downers Grove North senior Ryan Clevenger again showed why he is one of the best runners in Illinois at the Nov. 9 IHSA Class 3A cross country state final. Clevenger crossed the finish line at Peoria’s Detweiller Park in 14:24, good for fourth place among all runners. His finish was eight seconds better than his previous best time of the season, a 14:32 that he also recorded at Peoria earlier in the fall. Additionally, Clevenger improved upon his 2013 state final time, when he ran a 14:38 and came in seventh place. After the final, Clevenger announced that he will run next season for the University of Wisconsin. The Trojans boys cross country

team qualified for the state final and finished 13th out of 26 teams.

Trojan runners capture multiple relay, individual state medals

Two quartets of Trojan runners kept impressive streaks alive on back-to-back weekends at the girls and boys state track meets. On May 24, the Trojans’ 4x800-meter relay team comprised of Emma Moravec, Margaret Schaub, Zayna Jan and Stephanie Urbancik secured the fifth straight all-state finish for the relay. Their fourth-place finish (9:14.16) was the best showing since the 2011 quartet won state. Urbancik was part of the 2011 unit and she added a second state medal this year in the 800 run. Not to be outdone, the quartet of Tony Zea, Jack Diamond, Zac Christensen and Ryan Clevenger brought home the fourth all-state finish for North’s boys 4x800 since 2009

The Downers Grove North girls basketball team earned third place at Wheaton North’s Bill Neibch Falcon Classic on Saturday with a 54-41 victory against St. Charles East. DGN received contributions throughout its lineup, outscoring St. Charles East 23-9 in the first half. Guard Jaida Green had a double-double (15 points and 13 rebounds) while center Peyton Winters added 16 points and seven rebounds, Izzy Greenblat chipped in nine points and five rebounds and Lauren Porcelli had eight points and seven rebounds. The Trojans (9-4) advanced to the third-place game with a 60-28 thrashing of Waubonsie Valley and a 49-42 win against Glenbard South in the quarterfinals. Mustangs advance to second supersectional in school history

An undefeated run through the West Suburban Gold conference was just the beginning for the Mustangs’ baseball team, which went on to capture regional and sectional crowns and push highly-regarded St. Rita to the limit before falling, 2-1, in the supersectional game. South was one of the final eight teams left in the playoffs. It was the second time the DGS baseball team reached a supersectional (the Mustangs first advanced to the supersectional in 2005). Three-year varsity starters Zac Taylor and Joe Becht as well as seniors Chris Pedrak, Danny Spinuzza and Matt Zinnecker were regulars who set the tone for the Mustangs’ team that enjoyed its best playoff run in Downers Grove South school history.

DGS duo takes home track and field state medals

Downers Grove South athletes made their names known at the girls state track meet in May. Sophomore Michaela Hackbarth qualified for state in two events and had a stellar showing in one of them, placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.0. Senior Abby Kargol went out with a bang, setting new personal and school records in the 3,200, finishing fifth with a time of 10:50.04.

Hobbs takes 5th at state wrestling DGS wrestler Mike Hobbs was a force on the mat all season at 285 pounds. The 6-foot-3 senior posted an impressive 34-4 record during the regular season, coming in second at sectionals and earning his

second-straight trip to the 3A state tournament. At state, Hobbs won two of three preliminary matches, then split his final two matches, defeating Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman, 3-1, to snatch a fifth-place medal.

Leto leads tennis state effort

With junior Tony Leto leading the way, Downers Grove South’s boys tennis team won a sectional title and then finished fourth in the state with 29 points, only five points back of third place New Trier. At state, Leto advanced to the singles quarterfinals and finished sixth in the state. Sophomore Christian San Andres advanced to the fourth round in the singles main draw for top 16 finish. The doubles teams of Ryan McMillan and Zach Wood and Mitch Plys and Lawrenxe Hiquiana also won matches in the main draw to help the Mustangs to the stellar team finish.
