DOWNERS GROVE – The state of the village annual report presented during the village council meeting Feb. 10 touched on Downers Grove’s strategic goals. “The report looks back on some of the highlights of the last year, but has also come to be known as the state of the village,” said Mayor Martin Tully, who presented it. “And because of that Finances name I feel compelled to say that the “For many years, Downers Grove state of the village is exceptional.” has had a balanced budget,” Tully said. Q: Do dental issues get better or worse as you get older? A: Every stage of life has its challenges and opportunities. That applies to dental issues as well. Dental health doesn’t necessarily get worse as you age, particularly if you have been attentive to your teeth all your life. Adolescents, for instance, have to deal with gingivitis, the gum inflammation that some researchers think is a by-product of hormonal change at puberty or the result of a typical teenage diet and poor oral hygiene. They may also deal with appliances their parents opt for to straighten their teeth. The elderly, on the other hand, deal with changes like receding gums, a condition that leaves the cementum that covers each tooth’s root exposed. Hence the saying, “long in the tooth” for a person who is aging. The exposed part of the tooth is susceptible to decay and to abrasion from brushing. Older adults who have not consistently practiced optimal oral hygiene could also be dealing with the problem of lost teeth. In addition, seniors are also prone to a potentially serious problem with wrinkling around the mouth, a condition that stems from skin that does not contain as much water and fat as a younger person’s does. Every age presents its challenges when it comes to oral health. The best way to be prepared for these challenges is to visit your dentist regularly and practice good oral hygiene all through your life.

ing bonds and reduced general obligation bond payments by $500,000. • The village received a total of $2.5 million in grants in 2014 including a FEMA Hazardous Mitigation grant to help acquire homes in a flood plain, a DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference grant for surface transportation projects at Main and 59th streets, and a Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity grant for the downtown pedestrian crossing project.

Service enhancements

The Village Operations Center is now capable of receiving wireless fire alarm transmissions from businesses. The switch to wireless eliminates business phone lines, saving $600 to $1,200 a year for businesses, Tully said.

Fire department

The fire department now ranks in the top 1.5 percent of departments nationwide for fire protection effectiveness. The ratings are issued by the Insurance Service Office and used to set residential and business insurance premiums. An improvement means a reduction in premiums throughout the village, Tully said.

Sign ordinance

The original goal of the sign ordinance, adopted in 2005, was to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look in the commercial corridors, Tully said. Compliance to date is about 96 percent.

struction, maintenance and ADA compliance. One accomplishment in infrastructure is the village’s improved FEMA flood rating, which went from 7 to 6, Tully said, and reduced Martin Tully flood insurance premiums by 20 percent for properties within the flood plain.

could be important deductions for 2014. Since our out-of-pocked medical costs keep rising (and our incomes are less due to lower interest rates), you should check your expenses, including: • Medicare insurance and the drug premium • Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not pretax) or deducted from your pension and Cobra costs • Non reimbursed medical and especially dental costs • prescription drugs • hearing aids and batteries • medical mileage @ 23.5 cents/mile • long-term care insurance

While medical expenses are only deductible over 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over 10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizing this year since their medical costs plus real estate taxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add up to more than their standard deduction.

The village responded to residents’ request for a prescription drug dropoff program, Tully said. Residents may take expired or unused prescription medications to the police department to drop off at no cost.

Police department

The police department partnered with the fire department to conduct an active shooter exercise with Midwestern University and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Tully said, meeting federal requirements for emergency training. First responders from Oak Brook, Lombard, Woodridge and Darien also participated. “We are well positioned to accomplish our identified projects and goals,” Tully said. “We should be proud of this community, proud of this organization and proud of ourselves for making this all possible.”

Efforts to save Edwards House continue By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A new plan arose at the village council meeting Feb. 10 that may rescue the historic Edwards House from the wrecking ball, and save a few trees along Maple Avenue as well. Downers Grove resident John Tillotson, who stepped forward to move the house from its current location at 942 Maple Ave. to his property at 743 Maple Ave., requested the council provide approval for he and his team of industry professionals to work with the village forester on a revised map of trees affected by the move, and for the council to vote on the new proposal at its meeting Tuesday. The council agreed to Tillotson’s request to move forward in working with village staff. According to a village manager’s report dated Friday, Tillotson and his house-moving professional and consulting arborist will meet with staff this week to prepare an updated structure relocation route and tree removal and pruning plan. Staff are also working with Tillotson on a revised term sheet for the proposed three-party agreement.

The review and discussion of these items is now tentatively scheduled for the council meeting March 3. At the Jan. 20 council meeting, a map developed by staff indicated more than 20 trees would have to be trimmed, temporarily removed and replanted, or permanently removed were the house relocated. Residents and commissioners voiced concerns over the potential tree loss. One of the requirements for the move would be for Tillotson to gain approval from the five residents whose trees would need pruning. Not having access to the village forester, Tillotson worked with a certified arborist and the moving company to devise an alternative plan to preserve some of the trees. “I have to say that going into that activity I personally didn’t know where I stood on the whole initiative,

and the reason is, I really like trees,” Tillotson said. “Our intent is to live in the home and we don’t want to be the people responsible for upsetting the neighborhood and having this impact on the trees. ... At the end of that exercise, I had a different feeling, which was we really can do this with minimal tree impacts based on opinions by experts.” Tillotson said that by turning the home into 743 Maple Ave., the trees at 802 Maple Ave. would not be affected. The original plan required them to be pruned, and the neighbor had expressed disapproval, he said. The new plan also involves moving some dirt in the parkway near the Downers Grove Historical Museum to avoid a large parkway maple tree and two private trees at 826 Maple Ave., where the homeowner has not given approval for tree trimming or removal, he said. In discussing Tillotson’s request, commissioner Greg Hose said staff would not be starting with nothing, since there is already a staff report on the matter, and additional information from the arborist. “We are not making a commitment one way or the other,” Hose said. “If

St. Mary’s of Gostyn Holds A Successful International Fair Trade Market SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese Generous, thoughtful people are always looking for ways to help others. Volunteering, giving personal donations, and fundraising are ways to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Shopping for “Fair Trade” products is another wonderful way that consumers can help people in other countries who exist under dire circumstances and have little chance for improving their lives. Fair Trade, according to www.fairtradeusa.org, is a global trade model that includes certification so shoppers can quickly identify products that were produced in an ethical manner. For consumers, it’s a powerful way to reduce poverty through everyday shopping; for farmers and workers in developing countries, it offers better prices, improved terms of trade, and the business skills necessary to create high-quality products that can compete in the global marketplace, according to the website. Fair Trade allows farmers and workers to improve their lives and plan for their

futures; they can provide their families with medicine, shoes, clothing, books for school, and other necessities. Today, Fair Trade benefits more than 1.2 million farming families in 70 developing countries. St. Mary’s of Gostyn held an International Fair Trade Market on December 13 and 14, 2014. The community shopped for gifts created by disadvantaged farmers and artisans from more than 20 countries, including Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Kenya, India and Pakistan. Available items included alpaca gloves and hats, tree ornaments, mouth-watering fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate, along with musical instruments, puzzle boxes, games, toys, jewelry, nativity scenes, and decorative wall hangings made from unique and recycled items. St. Mary’s raised approximately $13,800 to help these farmers and artisans; buying Fair Trade products also provides fair prices and credit, fair labor conditions, direct trade, and environmental sustainability. For more information about purchasing Fair Trade products, contact Susanne and Vincent Donoghue, owners of Gracias Fair Trade, at donoghues-crain@sbcglobal.net.

the ultimate product is 10 trees removed instead of 15 I don’t know if that is going to move the needle for me, but I think it is worth it to find out.” In addition to the tree impact, another concern is financing. The village stated it would waive the building permit fees of $140,000 for the condo development where the Edwards House currently sits, and disburse the funds held in escrow to Tillotson after the relocation. “I think tree impact will still be significant,” said commissioner Geoff Neustadt. “I can’t outlay any dollars that are public dollars. The tree impact is important, the dollars are becoming more and more important.” Downers Grove resident Denise Lazar spoke against the use of village money for the Edwards House. “I want the council to know that it’s not appropriate to spend public dollars and I appreciate you speaking out for taxpayers in terms of protecting our money,” Lazar said. “This is not an emergency. ... You need to do your job and get information to make a thoughtful decision.” Tillotson said that since the Jan. 20 meeting, he took steps to seek alternative funding.

Council votes down electronic message board signs DOWNERS GROVE – During its meeting Feb. 1, the village council opted not to pass a motion to allow electronic message board signs, ending Community High School District 99’s pursuit of the signs at North and South high schools. The school district has been working with the village to begin the application process to rezone its two school properties from residential to campus-scale institutional and public, or INP-2, but also sought a text amendment to the zoning ordinance to permit the signs. The ordinance prohibits electronic message board signs in all zoning districts, including INP-2. According to village documents, the INP-2 district was designed to accommodate development of properties larger than 4 acres for public, civic and institutional use. The only property zoned INP-2 in the village is the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital campus. Village documents indicate other properties that could be eligible for INP-2

zoning include: District 99 properties, Downers Grove Grade School District 58 properties, the Midwestern University campus and park district, forest preserve and village properties. The idea of electronic message board signs in the village was cause for concern among many members of the council. “I am not comfortable to opening this to residents,” said Commissioner Greg Hose, who expressed worry for community members living in proximity to properties affected by the proposed amendment. Commissioner Geoff Neustadt also said he didn’t feel the signs were right for Downers Grove. Residents who were unable to at-

tend the meeting submitted remarks online via the village website. Of the 11 remarks submitted, the majority supported the district’s appeal for electronic signage. Two members of the public spoke during the meeting, one in favor of the signs and one against. “I have concerns about digital signs anywhere in the village, but I am not completely closed to this idea,” Commissioner David Olsen said. “I am going to be supporting this.” Superintendent Mark McDonald acknowledged the school district’s desire for electronic message board signs is separate from its pursuit of INP-2 zoning, and said prior to the council’s Feb. 3 meeting, the district believed only Good Samaritan and Midwestern Uni-

versity, in addition to North and South high schools, were eligible for INP-2 zoning. McDonald said the district acknowledges the text amendment question is different if applied to each school and park district building in Downers Grove. “I also want to note that at the Feb. 3 meeting, District 99 showed examples of digital signage at Naperville Central and Hinsdale Central high schools,” McDonald said. “Those examples were intended to be examples of comparable high schools, but in no way was our intent to offer council a specific sign for approval, nor did we discuss specific digital technology available, nor a specific sign for review by the council.” The intent was to proceed with a text amendment that would provide parameters, he said. McDonald said while he was disappointed with the council’s vote, he respected its decision. “We will continue to go forward with INP-2 zoning with the village,” he said. The motion failed 4-3.

Petition challenges sidewalk proposal in Clyde Estates By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A petition was presented Feb. 10 to the village council urging commissioners to vote to defund the proposed construction of new sidewalks in Clyde Estates scheduled to take place this year. Clyde Estates resident Mike Salazar presented the petition to the council. Reasons cited in the petition for the defunding include residents viewing the sidewalks as being unnecessary, a waste of taxpayer dollars and a component that will decrease stormwater absorption. Other concerns include the potential for damage to existing trees and root systems during sidewalk construction. “There are 65 households within Clyde Estates on the streets scheduled to have new sidewalks constructed this year,” Salazar said. “This petition is signed by 55 of the 65 households. Quick math tells you that is 85 percent.” The proposed project slated for Clyde Estates includes not only sidewalks but street reconstruction and stormwater drainage. “We understand the proposed budget for street reconstruction is $1.5 million for streets, $500,000 for stormwater improvements and $300,000 for the sidewalk element,” Salazar said. “This petition is only concerned with the sidewalks. Our streets are in poor shape and we do have stormwater issues. We need these matters addressed properly.” Several residents from Clyde Estates were in attendance at the meeting and spoke out not only against the sidewalks but also against the tree loss from their proposed construction. Elizabeth Davis said the Clyde Estates neighborhood was hit hard by the 2011 tornado and many trees were lost as a result. While new trees were planted to replace those destroyed, she said they are now in jeopardy because of sidewalk construction no one wants. Mayor Martin Tully said the council would take the petition under advisement. “I do realize there are certain people who feel very strongly against certain aspects of the plan, but there have been efforts to try and at least discuss those,” Tully said. The village has been working with Christopher B. Burke Engineering on plans for Clyde Estates, according to village documents. A revised plan includes removing a proposed traffic circle, raising ditch profiles wherever possible and regrading stormwater management areas to save trees. That plan will be presented at the March 3 council meeting.

Raising expectations with PARCC tests is good for students Standardized testing is changing dramatically in Illinois. Out are the old, familiar tests; they are replaced with the new PARCC tests – which stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. PARCC will measure how well students meet the state’s new, more demanding standards known as Common Core State Standards. COMMUNITY By state and federal VOICE mandate, District 99 must Gina issue the test to students this spring. Ziccardi Not everyone is excited about the PARCC tests. For example, administering the test poses a variety of challenges. The assessments will be computer-based, which creates some logistical hurdles for us – and a departure from the pencil-and-paper tests that students are accustomed to taking. Also, assessments will be given over nine days, for two hours each day. That’s a lot of time, and we’re adjusting schedules to try to minimize the disruption and stress to students. Despite the obstacles, we believe that the PARCC tests better reflects our curriculum than previous tests ever could. For example, for English questions, students must read multiple passages carefully, pull out key ideas and evidence and then write persuasive arguments. For math problems, students must show their work and write their reasoning. Students must synthesize information, which is a more complex task than anything we’ve asked students to do before on a standardized test. But it’s what teachers ask them to do all the time in class, and so we know there is value in it. We anticipate the results of the PARCC tests will help our teachers to make better informed decisions about their instruction. By analyzing where our students succeed (and where they fall short), we will be able to adapt lesson plans, increase student understanding and create new measures of accountability for ourselves. District 99 has been at the forefront of adapting our curriculum to align with the more rigorous standards, and we’ve seen the positive impact on student learning. Raising our expectations of what students are capable of achieving isn’t easy, but we know that it is good for students.

Gina Ziccardi is the assistant superintendent for student learning at District 99, including North High and South High Schools in Downers Grove. Laura Burke, general manager lburke@shawmedia.com 630-427-6213

The Food Network tapes an episode of its TV show, “Restaurant: Impossible,” on Feb. 10 at Lemon Tree Grocer in downtown Downers Grove.

We’re looking forward to watching “Restaurant: Impossible,” Downers Grove style. The Food Network show was in downtown Downers Grove last week to film at Zest Bistro inside Lemon Tree Grocer. The episode is expected to air later this winter or in the spring. The drumbeat for some kind of intervention in the Robert Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is to receive. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening. Do better next time

Regarding the recent snow removal effort by the village of Downers Grove: The people in charge, including the mayor and anyone up for re-election, would be wise to familiarize themselves with the story of Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic and the blizzard of 1979. Remember that something as simple as a bad snowfall could be your downfall as an elected official. Please do a better job next time.

Re-elect Downers Grove Mayor

For the good of Downers Grove, Mayor Martin Tully must be re-elected. As to the incumbent commissioners who are running, the word is defenestrate.

Salt Creek Ballet celebrates 3 decades of dance SPONSORED BY

By Gina Kraman What started as a few ballet students pirouetting on a worn gymnasium floor in LaGrange, has blossomed into a nationally acclaimed dance company, with hundreds of students perfecting their moves at a state-of-the art facility in Westmont. Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and continues it’s two-part mission: to train students, and to give dancers high-level opportunities to perform. Founder Patricia Sigurdson had taught Chicago-area students following her training at the Royal Ballet School in London, and in New York with famed choreographers Frederick Franklin and Robert Joffrey. She also danced professionally with the American Ballet Theater. However she was compelled to bring her talents and classes to the western suburbs. Sigurdson began teaching students in LaGrange, and soon wanted to provide a professional-level performance experience. She felt that the western suburbs would benefit from and support a quality, classically trained dance company.

After generating support and funding, Sigurdson established SCB in 1985. Teacher Susanne Carroll Wren, with SCB for more than 37 years (even before it was officially established), recalls the early facility, which “consisted of one large studio, and one small one. We soon outgrew that, and developed the four studios we have today.” The staff grew also, adding employees including Christina Salerno, who had danced with the company, and now serves as SCB’s executive director. When Sigurdson retired in 1998, Russian dancers Sergey Kozadayev and Zhanna Dubrovskaya became artistic directors. This husband and wife team contribute their classical and contemporary ballet expertise honed on the international stage. Three decades of dancers have taken classes and performed at SCB, which is known for its elaborate productions, including the annual holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.” SCB has embellished “The Nutcracker” performances, and the company now owns and recently updated the set and costumes. Wren recalls how SCB previously rented sets and wardrobe, and even borrowed dancers, to perform in the early years.

This has to do with Downers Grove Comcast. I pay over $80 a month for the digital starter package and all the extra fees that they tag on with it. And yet, there is no on-screen guide to their programs. Now, they used to have such a guide on a certain channel where you could see what’s on, but now they took it away, and when you call them, they have no explanation. This is ridiculous. Once in a while, I treat myself to an Egg McMuffin on my way to work in the morning. I pass a McDonald’s on Maple Avenue in Lisle and the new one on Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove. How is it that Lisle charges $2.99, while Downers Grove charges $3.45 for the same item? This is a 46 cents difference. So, if you need an Egg McMuffin in the morning, I recommend you shop in Lisle.

WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION.

PERSONAL ATTENTION. At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, we give our students the attention they deserve. More than 80 percent of our undergraduate class sections have fewer than 30 students, and our student-faculty ratio of less than 16-to-1 gives students the opportunity to thrive. SIU faculty provide our students with real-world experiences that translate to competitive career opportunities. We stay true to our roots as a university with the heart of a small college plus the brains of a major, internationally recognized research school.

Although the Trojans were again without leading scorer Jaida Green, who will likely miss the remainder of the season with a stress fracture in her left leg, Downers Grove North received contributions from up and down the lineup Monday, enabling the team to run away with the victory. “Anytime you are missing 18 points per game from your leading scorer, your offense is going to take a hit and it took us a few games to adjust,” Bolt said. “But it gives other kids a chance to step up and make some plays. “We just have to share the ball; our team mentality is to find teammates shots. Make it easy on the team and know when to pass up OK shots for great shots. We need to take great shots every single time down the floor.” Porcelli led all scorers with 15 points while Colleen Miller finished with 12 points. Downers Grove North advanced to a regional semifinal matchup against Bolingbrook on Tuesday. The winner will play Oswego East or Plainfield North on Thursday for the regional title.

BOLINGBROOK – Downers Grove North’s girls basketball team notched a fourth-quarter shutout during a dominant defensive performance in the regional quarterfinals game against Plainfield Central. The Trojans held Plainfield Central to 11 points or less in every quarter, keeping the opposing offense off the scoreboard for the final eight minutes of a 54-22 victory in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. “We rely on our defense to make other team’s uncomfortable and set the tone for our offense,” said DGN guard Lauren Porcelli. “We got a couple stops early in the fourth quarter, and I think that gave us a boost on offense and helped us go on a run.” Ahead 34-22 going into the final frame, Trojans guard Brigid Miller nailed backto-back 3-pointers from the right wing. On an ensuing offensive set, Porcelli then split the Plainfield Central defense, drawing a foul before sinking a right-handed layup. She finished off the three-point play and extended the lead to 43-22. The Trojan’s fourth-quarter starting lineup scored another nine unanswered points before head coach Stephan Bolt unloaded the bench with about three minutes left in the game. “The Plainfield Central zone defense was giving us some trouble early, but we were then able to work the ball inside and kick it out to the Millers, who hit some big 3-pointers,” Bolt said. Sophomore twins Brigid and Colleen Miller combined for five 3-pointers, while Pey-

Kedrowski excels with new Downers Grove North team By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Jordon Kedrowski has taken his game to another level in his only season on Downers Grove North boys basketball team. The senior, who transferred from Neuqua Valley to DGN at the start of the school year, quickly established himself as the Trojans’ most consistent scorer, and through 19 games he leads the team in points per game (12.4) and 3-pointers (109). Additionally, the 6-foot-2 guard is the team’s primary ball handler and has matured into an offensive catalyst, leading area teams with a 5.7 assist-per-game average. “The transition has gone pretty smooth, and it’s helped that the coaches implemented a new offense this season, so the rest of the team was learning a new system as well,” Kedrowski said. “We came in and had a lot great practices to start the season. I credit my teammates for that, they were a huge help.” Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Kedrowski also attributes Downers Grove North’s Jordon Kedrowski works the ball around the his success to the Downers York defense Thursday during a conference game in Downers Grove. Grove North coaching staff,

especially head coach Jim Thomas, whose tough love approach has helped him mature as a player and a person. “He’s hard on me, he gets on me a lot in practice,” Kedrowski said. “But I think it’s because he sees potential in me; he knows I want to play at the next level and he just wants me at my best on every single play. He’s a fantastic coach, I’ve learned so much from him that goes beyond basketball.” Thomas’ tutelage of Kedrowski goes back farther than this basketball season. The coach first took Kedrowski under his wing when the guard joined his Mercury Elite AAU team this past spring. “We had some really nice players on that team, and Kedrowski was the point guard that set up the offense and distributed the basketball,” Thomas said. “So he’s really taken on a new role with this team [Downers Grove North]. He’s still a great passer, but he’s shown that he’s an effective scorer, too.” Like Thomas, who played guard for Augustana College, Kedrowski hopes to contin-

He is currently talking to coaches at the Division-I, DII and DIII level, but will not make a decision if and where he will play college basketball until after the season. “I don’t want to make it about me, it’s about the team at this point,” Kedrowski said. “We are focused on getting as far as we can in the playoffs this year, then after I will figure it out.” The Trojans could not beat York for a second time this season, falling to the Dukes 63-49 on Thursday. Kedrowski led the way with 15 points while Colin Kramper chipped in 11. Downers Grove North gymnastics duo prepares for state run By MATT LE CREN editorial@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Downers Grove North gymnast Ellia Leger had to wait a long time to perform her uneven bars routine Feb. 11 at the Hinsdale Central sectional. But the patience paid off as Leger ended an even longer wait – her school’s 10-year drought between state qualifiers. The senior was the last competitor on bars and she rocked her set for a 9.35 score, good enough for fourth place and an automatic berth at the state meet at Palatine High School. Leger’s bars routine completed her sectional meet and also allowed her to advance to state in the all-around competition. Her 36.775 was good for fifth place. “I’m just really excited that all my hard work that I’ve

Leger is North’s first all-around qualifier since Krista Lewis and Casey Panko in 2003. “I was hoping for bars and I wasn’t really expecting to make beam and all-around,” Leger said. “I just couldn’t be more excited and happy.” Downers Grove South sophomore Kayla Carlson was in a similar mood after qualifying for the first time. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK LAUREN PORCELLI

Downers Grove North Junior | Basketball Why Porcelli was selected: The junior guard scored a game-high 15 points Monday during a Class 4A regional quarterfinals victory against Plainfield Central.

Lorae Mundt - For Shaw Media

Downers Grove South’s Tyree Johnson wrestles Ben Williamson of Naperville Central for third place Saturday in the 138-pound weight class at the 3A Downers Grove North sectional. tlers qualified for the state final after placing in the top four of their respective classes at Saturday’s Wilmington sectional. Junior Anthony Griffiths came in second place in the heavyweight class, losing 7-2 to the sectional champion. Senior Adam Ferrell also will make a trip to state after placing fourth in the 160-pound class. Ferrell lost Westmont A pair of Sentinels wres- 16-13 in the third-place match.

Soulier: What happened in the fourth quarter that enabled the team to engineer a 18-0 run? Porcelli: I think that we brought a lot of energy and started to play really well as a unit. We have been talking about moving as a unit and everyone moving together instead of everyone doing their

own thing. I thought at the beginning of the quarter we started moving and working together.

Soulier: You held them to less than 10 points in all but one quarter. How important is it to set the tone on defense? Porcelli: I think that’s more important than offense because you can’t win a game without defensive stops. The offense will come as we work our butts off on defense.

Soulier: How has the offense changed without Jaida Green in the lineup? Porcelli: For me, I am just

doing my best to breakdown defenses by dribbling and getting to the hoop. As a team, we have been doing a good job of moving the ball and getting scoring contributions from throughout the lineup.

Lauren Porcelli has a penchant for breaking down opposing defenses and getting to the basket. The Trojan guard’s dribble penetration skills were on full display Monday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs against Plainfield Central, as she scored 15 points and went 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Porcelli, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the win.

DOWNERS GROVE – Tyree Johnson crossed one wrestling goal off his list Saturday. Then he immediately made a new one. The Downers Grove South junior won three consecutive backdraw matches at the Downers Grove North sectional tournament and finished fourth at 138 pounds to lock up his first state tournament berth. “It feels good,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been down state in my three years, and I feel like when I get down there I should accomplish my goal and place top five in the state.” While this will be Johnson’s first trip to state, he has a good idea of what to expect when the tourney begins Thursday and how best to prepare for success. “Morning practices, more intense practices, keeping my conditioning up and stay focused,” Johnson said. “I’m expecting really tough competition.” Downers Grove North’s Pat Walker locked up his second straight state tournament berth with a 2-0 win in a backdraw semifinal at 113 pounds, then improved his state seeding with an 8-3 win in the third-place match. “It feels pretty good,” Walker said of getting back to state. “I just know what’s going to happen [at state] and I know what to expect.” North’s E.J. Phillips won his first three sectional matches to reach the finals at 285, where he finished second
