Q: What is osteomyelitis? A: Osteomyelitis is the medical term for an infection that spreads from a tooth socket after the extraction of a tooth into the marrow of the bone. A tooth extraction is a serious matter. You can generally expect some bleeding, pain, and swelling after an extraction. A small amount of bleeding and oozing for about 24 hours after the procedure is not unusual. But complications like osteomyelitis can arise. Unlike the condition known as dry socket, osteomyelitis causes a deep pain in the jaw, fever, weakness and general lethargy. If you suspect that you’re infected with osteomyelitis, you’ll need to have a bacteriological culture taken in order to identify the infection and prescribe the most effective antibiotic. In severe cases of osteomyelitis, swelling can extend into the throat and pose a potentially life-threatening situation should the swelling close the trachea. As with any infection, if a case of osteomyelitis is not treated, the infection can travel to the body’s organs with serious potential consequences. In severe instances, a patient may need to be hospitalized so that the antibiotics can be administered intravenously. If you are scheduled for a tooth extraction, be sure to talk with your dentist about the benefits and risks.

YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST
Based on the uncertainty surrounding the budget, the village agreed to postpone its facilities plan to spend about $50 million on a new village hall and police and fire stations. The village recently approved changes to stormwater mitigation funding, exempting churches and nonprofits from paying for services, which resulted in a loss of $218,000 per year for the village. Neustadt stands by the vote, and said the bills were having a “huge impact” on churches. Tully said he wanted the ordinance
DGR
Neustadt wants to focus on providing high quality municipal services, such as police and fire, and said budget shortfalls and infrastructure needs are important as well. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget includes cuts to the distribution of state income tax revenues, which would result in a $2.4 million loss for Downers Grove by 2016. The governor also has proposed a two-year freeze on property tax increases – one way the village could make up for the reduction.
Neustadt said his top legislative priority would be to provide the village with relief from the Freedom of Information Act. “If there was a way to ease the responsibility … [and] respond in a meaningful way to our residents, that needs to be legislated at the state,” he said. Tully said his biggest priority is to make sure the state doesn’t pass any unfunded mandates, which can be “a huge burden” financially, at the local level.

DOWNERS GROVE – Two candidates for Downers Grove mayor squared off March 11 during a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle at the Downers Grove Village Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Martin Tully and Village Council Commissioner Geoff Neustadt are going headto-head in the April election. Tully is seeking his second term as mayor. Prior to taking that office, he spent eight years as a commissioner on the council. Tully said the village has seen a lot of success during the past four years. “A winning team would not replace its coach,” he said. His opponent, Neustadt, has been on the council eight years, and worked for 20 years as a maintenance mechanic with Downers Grove Grade School District 58. He said he wants to be a “mayor next door,” and to be involved in decisions that affect all residents. “I want to be in your backyard talking about your fence permit. I want to talk about your stormwater needs. I want to talk about your shed,” he said. Tully said the most pressing issues facing the village are economic concerns and infrastructure and facility needs.

VILLAGE COUNCIL | 6 THINGS TO KNOW
Village tackles key issues during March 10 meeting By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council had a productive meeting March 10 when six items of importance were discussed.
1. Bond issuance
The council approved taking out $5 million in bonds to pay for water projects. In all, $3 million will be spent on water main replacement and $2 million will be spent to upgrade equipment used to upgrade water meters. Judy Buttny, the village’s finance director, said the bonds will be repaid through the village’s water funds.
2. Water main improvements
The council held a first reading on a motion to spend $1.4 million on water main improvements. Nan Newlon, the village’s public works director, said the project will repair 4,100 linear feet of water mains on Otis, Grand and Birch avenues and Bryan Place. The streets will be milled or resurfaced.
The motion was scheduled to be voted on at the council’s meeting Tuesday.
3. Rauner’s budget cuts
The council voted unanimously to table a resolution that would encourage Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly not to pull the village’s share of income tax revenues. That money, which, according to village estimates, will account for $2.4 million of the village’s budget by 2016, has been listed as a potential cut in the governor’s upcoming budget. “The ramifications of that kind of budget cut would be significant,” Mayor Martin Tully said. The resolution would ask the state to make changes to that decision. But the council decided to hold off so they could add language to the resolution that would support both the village and the state working together on a compromise. “I do have problems with the resolution as it’s worded,” Commissioner Bob Barnett said. The resolution was scheduled to be discussed further at Tuesday’s council meeting.

4. 2015 zoning map
The board held a first reading on an ordinance that would adopt the 2015 zoning map for the village. Stan Popovich, planning manager for the village, said the zoning map reflects the change in zoning for a few properties in the village during the past year. He added that the village should take a look at the zoning map as a whole and go through each section of the town to be sure everything is zoned properly. Village Manager David Fieldman said the last time the village did that was 2005, and it’s a process that will likely begin again soon. “It would be a logical next step, and I imagine we’ll talk about it this summer,” he said. The zoning map was set to be voted on at Tuesday’s council meeting.
and Florence avenues on the south side of the street. The changes are being made for students at the Universal Spa Training Facility at Burlington and Fairview avenues. Students of the facility generally stay for longer than the current two hours allotted for parking. “I think it’s smart to work with our businesses in certain areas where businesses are growing,” Commissioner Geoff Neustadt said.
6. Clyde Estates project
The board voted to approve a change order on plans for reconstruction at Clyde Estates. The new plan will no longer include sidewalks or traffic circles intended to slow down traffic. Commissioners decided to pull those portions out of the plan after receiving negative responses from residents of the subdivision. Resident John Clifton said he 5. Newlon said the street would allow the neighbors on Washington … we feel that would be an improvement, four-hour parking between Fairview the kind that slows down traffic,” and Wilcox avenues on the north side of the street and between Fairview Clifton said.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Tollway may speed up SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Illinois Tollway is moving closer to increasing the speed limit on several area tollways from 55 to 60 mph, according to an Illinois Tollway news release. The Tollway’s Customer Service and Planning Committee recommended the changes based on years of traffic and engineering studies to determine areas where the speed limit could safely be increased to make traffic more efficient, according to the release. The Tollway’s Board of Directors will consider the recommendation at its March 26 meeting.
The board, the Tollway’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and the Illinois Department of Transportation must approve the speed limit changes before they can be enacted. Illinois Senate Bill 2015, which went into effect Jan. 1, allowed tollways in DuPage and Cook counties to be considered for increases up to 70 mph. Tollway stretches that would see increases include: • Interstate 88: from Interstate 290 to Route 31 • Interstate 355: from Interstate 55 to Army Trail Road • Interstate 294: from the Interstate 57 Interchange to the I-55 Interchange

LETTERS Resident tells young people to vote, touts endorsements
To the Editor: As a tax-paying millennial in Downers Grove, I am particularly concerned about good local government. I’m one of the young people who will benefit from responsible fiscal decisions – or be stuck paying the bills for the fiscal mismanagement of today’s elected officials. Every one of the three commissioner seats in this village of Downers Grove election needs people who will get the job done for the people of this community. William Waldack, Gina Vattimo and Bill White are those three. They will do an excellent job representing me and you. They will work with Mayor Tully to address real problems the village currently faces in business development, zoning, budgeting and flooding, as well as maintaining needed services. I urge every young person – and their parents and grandparents in Downers Grove – to vote, whether by mail with an easy-toget ballot mailed direct to you (dupageco. org/election/voting/41942), by early voting during spring break (Monday through April 4) or on Election Day itself (April 7). Put every elected official on notice it’s time for real change. That’s why I’m asking you to vote for three new commissioners – William, Gina and Bill – and to reelect Mayor Tully. Thank you. John Poshepny Downers Grove

To the Editor: Every time election season is upon us, the hairs on the back of my neck begin to raise as endorsements are given out. Although some may feel these are a useful tool in helping decide who the best person for the job is, those making the endorsements do not necessarily have your best interests in mind. An endorsement from an organization only represents the opinions of its members … literally just a handful of people. In addition to being biased by nature, endorsements can carry an unspoken promise of endorsee’s having to “pay back” the favor. The only person who has your best interests in mind as they relate to the state of the village is you. The best thing any organization claiming to be a citizen advocacy group can do is to help citizens make their own informed decisions. The purpose of these advocacy groups should be to consolidate all the information on See LETTERS, page 9
The League of Women Voters also hosted a forum for those running for village commissioner, a race in which five candidates are vying for three open seats. They are Sean Durkin, Becky Rheintgen, Gina Vattimo, William Waldack and Bill White.
Sean Durkin
Becky Rheintgen
Rheintgen also is a council incumbent, having been elected in 2011. A small business owner, she said she’s diligent about watching expenses. Rheintgen said the most important things she would face as a commissioner are the potential shortfalls proposed in the governor’s new budget. She also wants to build a new police station, and said the existing facility is outdated. “We need to find a solution our community can live with,” she said.
Gina Vattimo
Vattimo, who works as a preschool teacher and is seeking her first political office, said she wants to get involved because of “questionable economics” related to the village’s facilities plan.
Dawn Susin-Konters Downers Grove
Bill White
White sat on the Community School District 99 Board of Education for four years and currently serves as president of the village’s Zoning Board of Appeals. “My connection to our community is strong and deep,” he said. White said he hopes to recruit more business downtown and on Ogden Avenue to boost the village’s sales tax revenue. He said the facilities plan is an important issue for the council, but that it is flawed, and the village should scrap it and come up with a more “sensible and affordable” solution.

Durkin is an incumbent elected to the council in 2007. He works in the banking market, and said he feels his financial background is good for the council. Durkin said he doesn’t want to be a single-issue candidate, but rather to continue doing what is best for the community in all aspects of government. He said the governor’s proposed budget will be the toughest thing for the village to face in the coming months, but Downers Grove will be prepared to handle any changes. “We are in a good position,” he said.
Waldack spent eight years as a commissioner before deciding to step down in 2013, but wants to return to politics after seeing the proposed facilities plan. Waldack acknowledged the village decided to hold off on the plan, but wants officials to go one step further. “The important thing is it is on hold, which means they intend on going through with it. It should be scrapped,” he said.

Neustadt said he feels the public is hesitant to come to council meetings because of how long they typically last. Part of that, he said, is a loose public comment policy that allows community members to talk as long as they want. Tully said he doesn’t feel the need to cut off people who have come to address the council. He said he also thinks the village could be better with historic preservation. Both candidates were asked how they would communicate with council members. Neustadt said he wants to have discussions with each commissioner to find out how they like communicating about village matters. Tully said he prefers for the council to have all discussions in council chambers for transparency.

D-58 sets kindergarten enrichment program Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will pilot an Optional Kindergarten Enrichment and Enhancement Program this fall in the District’s Title 1 schools, which include El Sierra, Henry Puffer, Highland, Indian Trail and Kingsley. The District hopes to eventually expand the program districtwide in future years. District 58 administrators COMMUNITY and kindergarten staff designed VOICE the new program using years of Megan research, data and community Hewitt outreach regarding local kindergarten enrichment needs. We especially appreciate the more than 2,000 community members who completed the District’s recent kindergarten survey. We used much of this information to guide our program design. District 58 will continue to fully fund and support its existing high-quality, half-day kindergarten program. Students who chose to also enroll in the Optional Kindergarten Enrichment and Enhancement Program will participate in the existing half-day session in the morning and then continue on to the optional program in the afternoon. There, they will receive additional enrichment opportunities in literacy, math, social studies and science, as well as exploration in physical education, music, multimodal learning, socialization and play. District 58 is piloting the program in Title 1 schools to provide additional opportunities to some of its most needy students. In addition, District 58 may use some of its Title 1 grant funds to support furnishing classrooms and curricular materials in Title 1 buildings while the program is only offered in Title 1 schools. The optional program will cost parents about $2,400 (or $240 per month) and will cover the additional personnel costs and materials to operate the enrichment program. This fee is comparable to or less than similar kindergarten enrichment programs in the area. Title 1 funding will support fee waivers for eligible students. Parents residing within Title 1 school boundaries may enroll their incoming kindergarten student for the optional afternoon enrichment program during the Kindergarten Roundup orientation events this spring. A schedule of Kindergarten Roundups is available on www.dg58.org. The District 58 Board of Education unanimously approved the program during the March 9 board meeting. Although the board established a self-imposed deadline of April to make this decision, the district’s substantial preparation helped the board feel confident in approving the program one month in advance. We hope this early decision will help families plan for the upcoming school year.

Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities. Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way. The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion. The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine, yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station. Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus. And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association. There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain. But in this case, we know now that there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired? Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about. “Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.” Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him. Next month voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running. Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

It appears that common sense has prevailed in the debate over tree removal or sidewalk installation in Clyde Estates. The Downers Grove Village Council decided no sidewalks and, therefore, no need to destroy mature trees in order to put in the sidewalks. So, now, let’s see if the same common sense can apply to the plan to destroy the historic Edwards House and put up a weird monstrosity full of so-called luxury condos in its place. area’s underage drinking parties? I am wondering who is accountable for underage drinking parties within our community? Discarded beer cans littering the parkways on Saturday mornings. Teens urinating and vomiting on our driveways in the middle of the night. Inebriated adolescents driving home under the influence at 2 a.m. ’Tis the season. End of the year school dances and graduation parties are on the horizon. Again, I am wondering who is accountable for this extremely poor and dangerous behavior? Parents? Teens? Police? School administrators? Local police officers have advised me to call them early and often. I intend to do just that. Additionally, they have reminded my family that, in addition to fists, knives and guns can be part of the equation and are not just “city” issues. Let’s all be accountable, shall we?

Boys flourish in ballet SPONSORED BY
By Gina Kraman Ballet classes are more than sparkly pink tutus and wispy hand movements. They’re physically rigorous, mentally demanding, and appeal to boys, too, including professional football players. NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann has been taking ballet classes since college to improve his strength, rhythm, endurance, and mental focus on the playing field. The school of Salt Creek Ballet attracts boys to ballet, including Misha Barkidjija, 12, who has been dancing for more than seven years. He plans to pursue a career in dance, which is no surprise to his father: “Misha has always been active. Ballet is very athletic, with precise and controlled body movements,” says Chris Barkidjija, who drives Misha to his daily practices, about 45 minutes away from home. “When your child loves doing something positive, and is committed to it, it’s hard saying no.” He adds, “Ballet may be less traditional for boys, but it’s even more demanding in some ways than sports.
Misha played soccer for many years, but time commitments forced him to choose either ballet or soccer. While both use similar muscles, ballet trains dancers to open up their bodies, while sports teaches to protect the body. Misha really thrives at Salt Creek Ballet, as the teachers push the students to achieve their goals.” Misha adds, “Ballet lets you express yourself through movement. With stronger legs, boys can do higher jumps than girls, but girls can be more flexible. It’s a great sport for everyone.” Why don’t more boys choose ballet? “The American culture is very sports-focused. In Russia and Cuba, men pursuing ballet is more common,” explains Keith Gerling, who’s 16-year-old son Jack has been dancing for 11 years. He reflects how Jack, as child, would “dance around the house when classical music was playing. I asked if he wanted to try ballet, and he said yes. Ballet has strengthened his discipline, teamwork skills, and stamina. Ballet is a big time commitment, but it’s been very positive, and Salt Creek is the best.”
For more information, call Westmont-based Salt Creek Ballet at (630) 769-1199, or visit www.saltcreekballet.org.
Lisle worker does great job
Thank you to the public works gentleman in the red and black headband who has been cleaning Main Street in downtown Lisle this past winter. Finally, someone who sees all of the trash, not just what will fit on his stick or in his bucket. He works differently than those before him. He approaches his work enthusiastically, and he’s pleasant, too. Yes, we notice. Thank you for a great job.
Better billboard option in Elmhurst I’m just reading the article on Sound Off to electronic billboards on [the] Palmer Drive underpass. Yes, I also would be against that billboard. But I would encourage the city to have a community bulletin board type of thing that would be in the train station on York Road, and possibly some of our volunteer groups could pay for this billboard. Or I wouldn’t call it a billboard. I would call it a community advertisement for functions in the town that are going on. … That I would like to see in Elmhurst, and I would put that at the train station.

St. Mary of Gostyn Hosts Rainbows Program for Grieving Children SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese When children experience loss, whether through the death of a parent or another family member, a divorce, military deployment, or even a friend moving far away, they need assistance in learning how to grieve. According to www.kidshealth.org. nz, kids need continuity (normal activities), care, and connection. Another tool that can help children cope with loss is a peer support group, such as the Rainbows Program. Rainbows is a national program that offers children an outlet to verbalize their feelings and meet other children who are dealing with similar situations. It offers participants a loving, accepting environment where they can share their stories. The goal is healthy resolution and healing of the loss experience, according to http:// rainbows.org/. The importance of this program can’t be overstated. According to the Rainbows website, children who suffer a major loss in their life are at increased risk for learning, emotional, and behavioral issues.
They can suffer from physical health problems, aggression, substance abuse, and alcohol abuse. The Rainbows Program, which is run by trained volunteers, offers many benefits: children develop appropriate behavior and anger management skills; they improve their academic performance; depression, anxiety, and emotional pain are reduced; and family communication improves. “When kids see other kids going through the same things they are, it’s invaluable to them,” said Jerry Chenski, Director of Religious Education at SMG. St. Mary of Gostyn offers this wonderful peer support group for children who are dealing with a profound loss. It is the only program of its kind in the Downers Grove area, and is the only one offered in the evenings. This free program is open to any child in the community. It is for kids in grades 1-6; they meet Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Parish Center

Common sense in Downers Grove
How to Sound Off

I feel the Village Council is wasting way too much money on the gateway signs. Come on, $100,000 for four signs and more waste coming next year. The design is supposed to have such a deep meaning that a sign will be needed next to them to explain they represent the train station’s red brick and Sears home. It’s a joke. But I’m crying, not laughing.

I will not be wrapped up in political maneuvering, positioning and have no aspirations to run for higher office. ... Downers Grove residents want a mayor not affiliated with a political party or organization but rather a mayor affiliated with the residents, business owners and community groups.
What are the most pressing issues facing the village? The biggest challenge facing the new council will be minimizing the impacts from Gov. [Bruce] Rauner’s recent proposed budget cuts. The governor is proposing a 50 percent reduction in the municipal shared (distributive) sales tax as well as a freeze in property taxes, which will amount to an annual loss of about $2.4 million to the village of Downers Grove. The new council must find a way to continue to provide exceptional core municipal services, with significantly less money. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the Village Council? I am the Sean Patrick only village commissioner who is a municipal finance expert: I have more than 22 Durkin years experience in the Chicago banking market, with the last 12 years focused on governmental markets. With a depth of experience in government finance that is unmatched on the council, I have had the opportunity to lead our village in becoming innovative in our stewardship of residents’ tax dollars. What are the most pressing issues facing the village? We must collectively find a solution to the challenge of our obsolete village facilities (police station and village hall) in a responsible, cost-effective manner that respects the outcome of the April 7 advisory referendum and is supported by the consensus of the community. The uncertain economic and political environment means we cannot count on traditional revenue streams. We must become financially independent of Springfield and Washington. The village has made much progress toward restoring its infrastructure to recommended conditions. But more work must be done to get Martin T. our infrastructure 100 percent caught up, yet stay within our means. Tully What specific experience makes you a good fit for the mayoral seat? My record as a proven, responsive and results-driven leader. Our community has achieved unprecedented success, including recognition as a top 10 best place for families and healthy retirement. Meanwhile, the village’s property tax has stayed flat or decreased. My advocacy for municipal issues at county, regional and state levels has shown that solutions to Downers Grove’s challenges sometimes lie outside our borders. My economic development experience gained through six years of service on the DG Economic Development Corp. executive board. My 20-plus years of private sector experience as an attorney helping clients solve complex problems with innovative and cost-effective solutions.
What are the most pressing issues facing the village? Recently, Gov. [Bruce] Rauner shared his budget address detailing a potential reduction in the portion of income taxes that the village receives. His proposal stated that this revenue source may be cut in half, which would result in a reduction of $2.4 million annually to the village. That reduction could be coupled with preventing the village from recovering that lost revenue by raising property taxes. Village staff have enacted a plan to prepare for these potential cuts, including delaying vehicle and equipment purchases, not filling Becky vacant staff positions and placing the village facilities plan on hold, to name a few. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the Village Council? For Rheintgen nearly two decades, I’ve worked in public service. I’ve learned serving any community requires careful decision making. I planned programs for area park districts. To successfully manage that role, it was important to hear concerns and help bridge gaps of communication between participants and staff. With that experience, I continue to advocate for residents, often communicating needs and translating the language of village policies and procedures. I am also a small-business owner. Signing paychecks makes you diligent, ensuring each expense is necessary and provides value to your business. I take that same care when making village decisions.

What are the most pressing issues facing the village? First, let’s scrap the incumbent council’s $52 million facilities plan and return to the drawing board. Thereafter, we should develop a sensible and affordable plan that addresses the urgent infrastructure needs of our police department. Second, we need to implement effective strategies to restore our collapsed sales-tax base. While the Great Recession that started in 2007-2008 has hurt every Chicagoland community, we are bouncing back at a far slower pace than almost anywhere else in the Chicago metropolitan region. Third, we need a Village Council that truly does seek Bill White to balance tradition and progress. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the Village Council? I have been part of the Downers Grove community for over 40 years. Currently, I’m chair of the Downers Grove Zoning Board of Appeals. I also served four years on the District 99 Board of Education, two years as president and I was chair of the citizen’s committee that reviewed the 2011 Comprehensive Plan. While serving as president of the District 99 Board of Education our board oversaw the negotiation of a teacher’s contract that was fair to both staff and residents and I have always endeavored to give all constituents a voice and a seat at the table.
What are the most pressing issues facing the village? First is the $52 million Village Facilities Plan that is too expensive and complex to achieve. I supported the referendum the incumbents opposed. We can act in a financially responsible manner. Our residents want fiscal responsibility in all issues and at all times. The Stormwater Utility Fee the incumbents plan to increase each year for 14 years. I am the only one on the ballot who voted against the fee and I oppose the increases. Whether it’s Springfield reducing our revenue, natural disasters, zoning, William another historical landmark endangered, or neighborhood character, we cannot afford to always make knee-jerk reactions. Waldack What specific experience makes you a good fit for the Village Council? The best qualification for being on the Village Council is having served two terms on [the] Council already. During that time we went through the economic downturn. I chaired and was a member of numerous boards and commissions. I voluntarily stepped down two years ago and served as board president for Senior Home Sharing, was re-elected to a third term to the Ride DuPage Project, and have served in several organization[s] on the board, sometimes as chair. I can view current issues newly energized and with fresh eyes, and decided at the urging of many to return to the council again.
Early voting starts March 23. Election day is April 7.

What are the most pressing issues facing the village? 1. ... The police station is undersized and needs improvements and Village Hall may need some upgrades as well. ... There is a $12 million library bond expiring next year – our goal should be to make the needed improvements for less than that and return the rest to the taxpayers. ... 2. The village is faced with the certain prospect of reduced funding from the state and therefore either reductions in spending or increases in local fees or property taxes. I believe we must ensure we have a culture in our local government services ... of fulfilling the mission with the least amount of resources Gina Vattimo and costs necessary. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the Village Council? I believe my good fit is based on my lack of political experience. I am not a politician and don’t have long-term plans to be one. I am a mom and part-time teacher. I live on a limited budget and within my means. Sometimes you have to make some tough cuts in one area so that you can afford something else. I will bring that same approach to village council. I am spending my own money on my campaign so that I will not be beholden to anyone – but the residents – in making decisions and voting on the council.

What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? 1) Reduced state and federal funding. I oppose increasing taxes to bridge gaps. 2) Our superintendent is retiring. My four years of learning about a superintendent’s role and responsibilities will help me as we seek the best fit for our community. 3) A new teacher contract. As we did in my previous term, I hope we can agree to another fair contract for our teachers and community. Reducing student fees, improving food services, adoption of a Master Facilities Plan and considering Mike moving semester finals to December are additional issues for the board to address. Davenport What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I’m the Downers father of four children, two currently attending DGS. I use my parental experience Grove and my taxpayer perspective when considering issues such as school funding, curriculum development, how and why we close school for snow days, why buses show up late and how school lunch contracts are awarded. If the voters elect me to continue my volunteer service (we receive no compensation), I will apply lessons learned with even greater effect. As a licensed architect, I also bring unique perspectives, talents and leadership to the board.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? I believe the three most pressing issues include: A) Hiring a new superintendent to succeed Dr. Mark McDonald, who retires next year. B) Protecting District 99 finances against proposed state funding formula threats that total in the millions of dollars per year specifically and cuts in state education spending and reimbursements generally. C) Ensuring that our nationally recognized curriculum maintains its high-quality status, strives for continued improvement and growth and affords every student Keith the opportunity to succeed within it as a college- or career-ready graduate. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I am a Matune 16-year Illinois licensed teacher and administrator who has been named Illinois Downers Teacher of the Year and IHSA Gymnastics Coach of the Year. I am deeply invested Grove in District 99 as a former North High graduate who grew up in Woodridge and lives in Downers Grove. Further, I am a fourth year District 99 Board member who has kept important campaign promises, such as televising board meetings, increasing fiscal accountability and transparency, and improving much needed relations with parents and the community through extensive communication efforts.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? The great unknown is the most pressing issues facing any school board in Illinois. We don’t yet know what changes will be made in Springfield that directly impact our funding. Will our funding be cut? Will our budget have to absorb pensions? Will educational or performance standards change? We also don’t know what kind of changes we will experience in the student body. Will the number of students who receive subsidized services continue to increase? Will we have to add more services to Nancy Kupka accommodate more students who don’t speak English or for whom English is a second language? Woodridge What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? There is a steep learning curve associated with being a school board member. If re-elected, this will be my second term on the school board. My education and work history have afforded me the experience to understand the altruism and service of education, as well as administrative responsibilities and the stewardship of public funds. I have served effectively over the last four years, representing the best interest of the school and the taxpayer. I am committed to preserving the integrity of public education.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? Over the next four years, the Board of Education will be charged with several critical decisions, but two appear to be paramount. First, the board will be charged with hiring a new superintendent upon Dr. McDonald’s upcoming retirement. Getting this decision right will be critical for the future success of District 99. Second, the board will negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with the teacher’s association. The board should be focused on retaining and attracting top talent while being Donald E. mindful of District 99’s financial needs. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? Over the Renner past few years, I have served on the District 99 Education Foundation assisting Downers with fundraising efforts for District 99. During said time I have come to know Grove Dr. McDonald, administrators and teachers. What I have learned is that District 99 is an asset our community should preserve and treasure. In addition, as an attorney for the past 12 years, I have advised school districts with regard to their budgets and levies and have defended school districts in property tax litigation. I think I am uniquely qualified and will offer a perspective the Board does not currently have.

In what turned out to be his final high school basketball game, Farley led Downers Grove North in scoring as the Trojans played in their first regional championship game in 12 years. North lost against Hinsdale Central in the regional final but it was still a solid season and Farley, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about the campaign in which the Trojans finished with a 17-12 record before he turned his attention to baseball season.
Rossi: What are your thoughts on the game against Hinsdale Central? Farley: I thought we really pushed out on the perimeter. I think they hit only one
3-pointer, it was just offensive rebounding. They hit the glass hard. They’re big, they’re physical. As far as pace goes, we know they like to run a little bit, so you counter that by trying to slow the game down.
Rossi: What is the legacy this senior class leaves behind for the teams to follow? Farley: I don’t know if it’s so much the record as it is the work ethic and chemistry. I love every guy in there [the locker room] and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other group. I think that’s what we leave for other groups.
Rossi: How do you put this season into perspective? Farley: It’s a big step in the right direction for the program.
