DOWNERS GROVE VILLAGE COUNCIL | 3 THINGS TO KNOW

DOWNERS GROVE – There were four main topics of conversation for the Downers Grove Village Council during its March 17 meeting.

1. Neighbors of potential condo development voice their concerns

Administration Laura Burke, general manager 630-427-6213, lburke@shawmedia.com Bill Korbel, local sales manager 630-427-6230, bkorbel@shawmedia.com Dave Lemery, editor 630-427-6250, dlemery@shawmedia.com David Good, managing editor 630-427-6270, dgood@shawmedia.com

Several neighbors attended the meeting to express concerns about a possible condominium development at 5212 and 5214 Fairview Ave. Residents told the council their properties have serious flooding issues and the development could further negatively impact the neighborhood. Jeff Decicco, whose property would back up to the condo property line, said the neighborhood is residential, and a condo would lead to the area becoming undesirable because of noise

Mike Anderson, who also lives near the property, said he enjoys the existing green space and wouldn’t want a high-density housing unit in his neighborhood. Village Communications Director Doug Kozlowski said no permit requests have been filed and the village has not moved forward with the project in any way.

income tax disbursements. In Rauner’s proposed budget, Downers Grove’s income tax allocations would be cut by 50 percent, resulting in a $2.4 million revenue loss, according to village documents. In the resolution, the council asked Rauner not to cut those funds, suggesting the village and legislature work together to find a solution that works for both. “Loss of revenue of that effect all at once without anything to offset it may have the misaligned goal of actually adversely impacting our ability to provide public safety services,” Mayor Martin Tully said. Commissioner Sean Durkin said he was at a meeting the governor attended the week before the council meeting and Rauner did not back down on his budget plans.

TAX TIPS

by

JUDI STRAUSS, E.A.

DID YOU GET A CALL FROM THE IRS?

First, it is not the IRS. The IRS never calls you; they only send letters/notices about problems with your tax filing – either a correction to ES tax paid or missing income or questions about a deduction – or notices to nonfilers. The term for these people who call is “pfishing”. They tell you that you owe money, you should send it in immediately or they try to scare you about what will happen if you ignore their warning. Many people do send money – and get scammed – over $14 million reported since October 2013. If you get a call, hang up immediately and know that it is NOT the IRS!! STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can prepare your IRS and IL taxes on our secure software. We can answer your questions, help you with tax strategies for 2015 and save you money. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9 AM -5 PM daily or by appointment.

By KELLI MURRAY editorial@mysusburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education on March 9 unanimously approved the district’s proposal to offer an optional kindergarten enrichment and enhancement program during the 2015-16 school year. According to Matt Rich, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, district administrators

Matt Rich School District 58 assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction consulted with district teachers and surveyed parents prior to designing the program. Administrators have been working diligently since April 2013 to get the

program off the ground, Rich said. “In January, we sent a survey out and had 2,000 respondents in two days,” Rich said. “We had 60 percent of families saying they wanted it.” The optional kindergarten program is not a full-day kindergarten program, but was designed as a supplementary education piece, Rich said. “We have a strong half-day kindergarten program,” Rich said. “Optional kindergarten is enrichment and enhances the regular kindergarten experience.” The program is designed for 550 hours of additional instructional time, plus lunch and recess, which are time periods that should be considered necessary for five-year-olds, according to Rich. “From a kindergarten perspective, that unstructured social time is a positive thing,” he said. “The interactions and dialogues kids have during that time, there is real power to that. ENAMEL WEAR

Q: How can I minimize the wear on my teeth’s enamel? A: Although the teeth’s enamel is the hardest element in your body, it is susceptible to wear and tear just like any other part of the body. Some foods and liquids that pass through our mouths are more corrosive to enamel than are others. For instance, though fruit and fruit juice are good for us, those that contain citric acid, like oranges, lemons, and bananas, are potentially damaging to enamel. You should also consume carbonated drinks in moderation. You even need to be careful about the toothpaste you use. Avoid toothpastes with abrasives in them, even though they may be marketed as tooth-whitening, stainremoving marvels. Some other things to consider: chewable tablets, like those for vitamin C, aspirin, or iron, can be corrosive, as can be repeated vomiting from alcoholism or bulimia. Refluxed gastric acid from a hiatus hernia or some other medical condition is also damaging to teeth. So, if you are concerned about enamel erosion, you should minimize contact with teeth when drinking acidic juices. Drinking through a straw will help. And with medicines or supplements that can be corrosive, take them in a solid form that you can swallow immediately. Talk with your dentist about other ways to protect the enamel on your teeth.

also means that some kids are getting a lunch.” Henry Puffer kindergarten teacher Carolyn Murphy said the optional program has multiple real world benefits for students. “There is increased opportunity for social/emotional connections with peers, and increased opportunity to have hands-on activities in science and social studies,” Murphy said. There also will be extended literacy, math and problem solving activities, she added. Students also will have more opportunities for independent learning as they rotate through learning centers from one activity to another. Murphy said students can start with an art activity and rotate to a science activity where they are observing fish and drawing what they see and talking to their neighbors about it, then move on to listening to a story and participating in comprehension activities. Further opportunities in music and physical education also will be part of the optional program, she said. “We will continue to have a robust half day academic program like we have always had,” Murphy said. “I am very excited about the opportunity to expand and build on the learning that happens in the morning. To give kids time to explore and interact and build on learning is a wonderful opportunity.” The optional, fee-based program is expected to start in the district’s Title 1 schools this fall. Those schools include El Sierra, Henry Puffer, Highland, Indian Trail and Kingsley. The program may expand if the community supports the endeavor, according to officials. To enroll a student in the program, parents can expect to pay $2,400 a year, or $240 a month for 10 months during the 2015-16 school year, according to the district. The fee will cover additional personnel costs, classroom and consumable materials. There is a fee waiver process available to families that qualify. “We are going to learn a lot this year,” Rich said. “We found starting small and building can be successful, and really giving a chance to learn and build the program will make a stronger community and experience for our children.” For information about the optional kindergarten program, parents should contact their home school directly, or go to www.dg58.org.

Downers Grove resident relives march from Selma DOWNERS GROVE – Fifty years ago, the Rev. David Bebb Jones had a front-row seat to history when he took part in one of the marches from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery. On Friday, Jones shared stories of his trip with a group at the Oak Trace Senior Living Community in Downers Grove. Jones, who also lives at Oak Trace, said sharing the stories helps put him back in those moments. “You do relive it,” he said. “Actually, I live with it a lot. This was an experience that really shaped my life.” After the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, public places were desegregated, but a racial divide still existed. Black people who were trying to register to vote were being discriminated against. To protest, groups marched 14 miles from Selma to the state capital, Montgomery, three times from March 7 to 25 in 1965. The marches were led by Martin Luther King Jr. Jones was the pastor of the Marquette Heights United Presbyterian Church, which is near Pekin. He lived in an all-white county that was considered a sunset county – one where black people

said there were other pastors who lost their jobs after returning from Selma. “I have no idea if we did an ounce of good,” he said. “We just did what we could do.” Jones said the country still has a long way to go before racial issues will subside. The racial tension still exists in America today, he said. The debate on racism and equality in America has escalated during the past few months, Jones said, from a white Ferguson, Mo., police officer shooting an unarmed black teenager to the University of Oklahoma chapter of Sigma Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Alpha Epsilon being videotaped singing The Rev. 3. Edwards House update

At

There is still no agreement in place to move the historic Edwards House. Tully said the village is continuing to work with John Tillotson, a Downers Grove resident who has stepped forward to attempt to save the house. FFM-DG Development LLC has plans to build a condo complex on the existing site of the home at 942 Maple Ave. Tillotson wants to move the house two blocks to a parcel of property he owns at 743 Maple Ave. But he wants financial assistance. Tillotson proposed the village cover the cost of the move, but the council countered with an interest-free loan idea. Tillotson previously told the board he was not interested in a loan. Village Manager David Fieldman said the condo developers want to move forward with their plans in May but may want to begin clearing the site sooner than that.

4. Zoning map, parking restrictions

The council unanimously approved the 2015 zoning map and parking restrictions on a portion of Burlington Avenue. Both items had their first reading at the March 10 council meeting.

which would allow states to change voting requirements. Opponents argued the decision reopened the door to voter discrimination against minorities. “There’s an effort in America to deny the vote,” he said. “It’s horrendous to me.” A group of students from Lakeview Junior High School in Darien were in attendance at the speech. Eighth-grader Emmanuelle Copeland said the speech made her think about equality in the country. “Will we reach that point where there’s radical change?” she said. Madison Luna, who also is an eighth-grader at the school, said she learned a lot about the civil rights movement from the speech. “That kind of really shocked me because I knew it was a problem, but I didn’t know it was that bad,” she said.

OUR VIEW

Your vote has never been easier or more powerful If you’re one of those people who gets annoyed every election cycle at the admonishments to go out and vote because you don’t care, you’re never going to vote and you don’t see why everyone keeps harping on it, then fear not – this message is not for you. This message is for the people who vote sometimes, or the people who know they should vote but can’t seem to get around to it. This is for the people who are most likely to vote when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race at the top of the ticket. This is for the people who’d vote if it was an app on their smartphones but don’t want to go to the trouble of seeking out a polling place. If you fit into any of those categories, then you need to vote between now and April 7, because this is the election where your vote matters most. (Early voting concludes April 4, and the 7th is Election Day, so don’t try to vote on the 5th or 6th). Municipal elections combine small constituencies with extremely low turnout, meaning races for positions that control tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of tax dollars often turn on a few hundred votes … or a few dozen votes … sometimes even one vote. Sometimes, even, a coin flip. For instance, in 2013, a Stickney Village Board trustee was chosen by a coin flip because the candidates tied with 573 votes apiece. In the 2012 presidential election, on the

other hand, more than 129 million votes were cast. So you can see where being one vote out of 1,146 can have a much bigger impact. If you’re not happy with your local schools, or local services, or the park district, or the library in your town, check and see if there’s anyone up for election on one of those boards. For the higher profile races, we’ve got questions and responses from the candidates about their positions online at www.mysuburbanlife.com/election-central. You can find the full ballot at the County Clerk’s website. This is your chance to choose the mayor who will oversee Downers Grove’s next steps regarding municipal buildings, such as the village hall and police and fire stations, as well as the village’s historic structures, including the Edwards House. Incumbent Martin Tully and village commissioner Geoff Neustadt are running for the position. If the importance of your vote isn’t enough to convince you, consider that it’s easier than ever to vote. Sure, a smartphone app would be great (if potentially insecure), but thanks to early voting you don’t necessarily need to stand in long lines. Pick an off-peak day and time during the early voting period, and you might be able to walk in and cast your ballot without any wait at all. Then you can sit back and watch everyone else hyperventilate knowing you’ve already done your civic duty.

Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

With nearly 600 acres of parks, prairies and sports fields to maintain, spring is a busy season for the Parks Division here in Downers Grove. During the past few weeks, you may have seen some of the Parks Division staff overseeing projects including tree pruning and tree removal, controlled burns at Belmont Prairie and COMMUNITY Lyman Woods, opening the VOICE new playground at Patriots Ian Park, a spot of snow plowing, and of course, preparing the Everett Downers Grove Golf Club for another busy golfing season. The team at the golf course has a wealth of expertise when it comes to maintaining turf, so we decided to share some tips here from Vince Pawlicki, the assistant golf course superintendent, on how to get your lawn ready for spring. • To get the best results from your fertilizer, wait until soil temperatures reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Before that temperature the grass is not actively growing, and won’t receive the benefit of the fertilizer. • Sharpen your mower blades to start the season and then sharpen them on each holiday to insure quality cutting through the whole season. • Clear your turf of residual fall clutter (leaves, pine straw, etc). This will help your grass get more sunlight and air movement, which will benefit turf health. • When it’s time to start mowing, mow at a height which cuts off only the top one-third of your grass. This will aid in root development which will make turf healthier. This will help with disease and drought resistance in the hotter summer months. Cutting at shorter heights will stress the plant, which would result in the need for more maintenance later in the summer. If you’d like to develop your green thumb further, there are several gardening-themed programs taking place at the Park District this spring. The new programs include orientation sessions for the Seed Library housed at Downers Grove Museum and vegetable gardening tips from members of the Illinois Master Gardeners. Plots at the community gardens at MarDuke Farm are also still available to rent. For information on any of these programs, call us at 630-960-7500 or visit dgparks.org.

Our [Downers Grove] public buildings are newer than 95 percent of our homes. The completed relocation to the old Pollack junkyard would put fire and police vehicles out on Ogden Avenue during rush hour. Contaminant remediation deals with optimism. What if another [20 feet] of remediation is required? Instead, let’s plant trees there on an organized volunteer basis and let them remediate the place. The two buildings existing could then be internally repurposed for far less money, inconvenience and waste. And we would all be $20 million richer with cleaner air.

Pay is too high in Downers Grove

Neustadt too political

Geoff Neustadt said that he believed Downers Grove residents don’t want a mayor affiliated with a political party or organization. Yet, he’s been supported by Ron Sandack for every election. How political is that?

Candidate not paying attention

I can’t believe in this day and age a guy is actually running for the mayor of Downers Grove on a platform of less transparency and less public input. Obviously he hasn’t been paying attention.

Unseasonable decor

It is great to see so many of my neighbors in Downers Grove in the holiday spirit this year. But I believe people should wait until after Easter to decorate for Christmas. And are brown wreaths and garland[s] a new trend for 2015? I asked a guy at Wannamaker’s if they carried brown wreaths and brown garland[s] but they looked at me like I was nuts.

After reading all the complaints about the proposed sidewalk installation in Clyde Estates, I can feel for those residents’ opposition. I live in Woodridge where 85 percent of the residents feel it’s safer to walk in the street than on the sidewalks we have here.

Over the years, I’ve written or [emailed] three different people serving as mayor of Downers Grove, as well as a number of people who have served as village commissioner on a variety of issues, including bidding on garbage collection, stop signs, road construction, no parking areas around elementary schools, appointments to village commissions and traffic restrictions at Main and Maple. In most cases, I have gotten a response, either explaining why the official agreed or disagreed with me, or indicating that village staff would try to remedy a problem. Only one official has been poor at responding to communications, and that’s Sean Durkin. An elected official who won’t respond to the concerns of residents [certainly] makes me wonder if he really cares about the views of the residents.

Yes, in the village of Downers Grove, I think someone should look into why so many, and I’m talking well over 80 people, are earning more then $100,000. They can’t all possibly be department heads with master’s degrees. This is clearly a whole lot more money than the general public makes and I think someone should research it, especially during these times when there’s so many budget cuts. We need some answers.

How to Sound Off

SD • Wednesday, March 25, 2015 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

Does Downers Grove really have so much excess taxpayer money available it has no other use for the $100,000 it wants to spend for fancy signage at its borders? As a taxpayer, I would prefer to see the money applied to the stormwater projects and thus holding down any fees and fee increases the village is planning to hit property owners with. Or how about repairing our potholes? Maybe we need more village referendums instead of fewer ones.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES What are the most pressing issues facing the college? By far, the most important issue facing COD is re-establishing a proper relationship between the board and the president. With Dr. Breuder’s promised retirement, we need to find a new president who will improve education at COD, collaborate with the employees and efficiently use the taxpayers’ investment in this great local resource. COD needs a leader who will only spend money on things that improve education and service to students and the transparency necessary to hold that leader accountable. Dan Bailey What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? My long association with the college began as a student starting in 1975. For 39 years, COD has been a Wheaton source for personal enrichment, learning Spanish and changing careers to become a registered nurse. My daughters also attended COD. I know very well how important this resource is for the people of our communities. It is worth fighting for. My commitment is to be a watchdog for transparency and taxpayers at every board meeting and to be a bulldog for students and their teachers. My experience in the health science area and in labor management committees will serve that commitment. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? There are major issues with internal controls and financial reporting and spending by the executive staff of the school. There is a severe lack of oversight by both the Board of Trustees and those charged with governance. There has been blatant misuse of no-bid contracts, and that needs to stop. The president has a reputation for brewing mistrust among people for his own personal gain. Because of his $762,000 contract buyout and the extraordinary wining and dining at the Waterleaf, the school now risks losing some of the state funding it receives each year. This can only hurt the Claire Ball students and community. Addison What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I work for a publicly traded company, and I must explain everything in detail and be able to justify every change made each day, review every document and check every figure for accuracy in staying compliant with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. I worked with people to prepare departmental budgets, ensuring their needs were met while staying within company thresholds, so I work very well working with people. I also worked with capital expenditure bidding approval and understand lease language. I am also known for being a person of integrity and truly working with people for the betterment of the project, group or company.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The college is in real trouble. There is: Lack of faculty and public confidence in the president’s leadership; financial scandals including alleged fraud, highly questionable spending practices, lack of openness at board meetings; and, in general, a president who has consistently been unable to work with others. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I worked in information systems. I have a master’s degree in business from the University Charles of Illinois. While there, I passed the CPA exam. I spent my career working with companies in a wide variety of industries. My company, a leading firm in the IBM Bernstein midrange marketplace, developed software and provided consulting services to Wheaton help our customers access and analyze their computer data. We enabled them to make better management decisions. We need people on the board who understand how we can address the serious accounting and financial issues the college faces. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? 1. Improving accessibility of our finances ... The policy should change so that the board, public and taxpayers can access and review for themselves where the college is spending its money. 2. Finding the right leader ... It is important as a board to develop consensus on how we will select and find our new college president ... 3. Restoring credibility ... I plan to help lead the board and the college in a new direction ... 4. Fixing a dysfunctional board communication process ... We need to facilitate open and honest Matt Gambs conversation. ... 5. Career outcomes for students ... we must remain focused on the future. Naperville What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I ... serve as an executive at one of Chicago’s largest banks. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school ... I was fortunate to be able to attend college through the GI Bill, and [I] graduated from Regis University in Denver where I studied economics and political science. ... I currently serve as board chairman of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce ... I currently serve as a trustee of Regis University. ... I am past chairman of the Heritage YMCA Group ... My wife and I are founding members of the Board of Trustees at All Saints Catholic Academy in Naperville, and I currently serve as chairman.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The College of DuPage has a Board of Trustees that is not holding the president and administration responsible. The board seems to have forgotten that the president reports to them and they report to the taxpayers. The lack of oversight and accountability has allowed insider deals, no-bid contracts, waste and fraud to take place for far too long. The mission of the college is to provide accessible, affordable and comprehensive education. We need to get back to the basics to ensure we deliver on that promise. Frank What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have served as a village trustee in Bartlett and as a school board member on U-46. I always Napolitano asked the tough questions to ensure that any money being spent was a good use Bloomingdale of the taxpayer dollars. I fought no-bid contracts, spoke out against any wasteful spending and worked to increase transparency. During my term on the Bartlett Village Board, we reduced the budget by 6.4 percent while delivering the level of service our residents expected. Bartlett received many awards and recognitions during my time on the board.

See TRUSTEES, page 16 What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The board has fundamentally failed to exercise real oversight over the college president, and that dereliction has had a ripple effect throughout the institution. This election is crucial to remove the current incumbents and install trustees willing to reform how COD currently does things, particularly with respect to Dr. [Robert] Breuder; to select the new college president; repair the rift with the faculty that led to the September 2014 no confidence vote; respect the faculty as professionals; solve the problems with Deanne internal controls and board policies that generated financial irregularities and an employee indicted for theft into six figures; and to restore trust with the public. Mazzochi What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? As a small-business Elmhurst owner and attorney, I have experience regarding employment issues; I have drafted, negotiated and litigated contracts and have issued FOIA requests and addressed Open Meetings Act issues – all areas where the current board has fallen short. ... In over 17 years of private practice, I have investigated many large corporate/bureaucratic organizations to figure out the facts on the ground, apply the law and engage in creative problem-solving on behalf of my clients. The public needs assurance that there is more than just one trustee looking out for us on the board; ideally they would have a majority so engaged.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? 1. Establish a positive forum for board meetings; obvious need for change conducive to decision making based upon facts, fair presentations, discussion and listening amongst board members and provision of answers to the public. An armed police presence must end. 2. Get the forensic audit done now; overwhelming evidence by two objective public watchdog organizations clearly shows financial wrongdoing. The board’s reaction was dead wrong in first refusing to approve a forensic audit and then later both ignoring/refusing to a voluntary performance audit by Roger Kempa the Illinois Auditor General. ... 3. Provide highest priority/needs fulfillment first to in-district students; secondarily to out of district, inclusive of out-of-state and international students. Darien What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? 1. Diversity is good. I am an independent candidate for the board to represent both the COD district taxpayers and students. 2. Both career of excellence and knowledge base in community college business and administrative management from employment perspective. … 3. Not beholden to special interests, political parties; … only the public. 4. Graduate of COD. … 5. Have an actual plan (platform). 6. Believe in term limits; one-term candidate. 7. Fact-based decision-maker … and answer all questions from public, citizens and board meeting audience members.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES – CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 What are the most pressing issues facing the college? Present issues include rebuilding community trust on campus and throughout the district, adding transparency, setting the stage for a presidential search and supporting the continuation of educational excellence. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? During my term as trustee, I have honed my leadership skills by attending trustee education seminars presented several times a year by the Illinois Community College Trustee AssociNancy ation. These seminars have dealt with finance, legal issues, government relations, curriculum and leadership skills. I also have three degrees in education and over Svoboda 30 years of community college experience serving as a COD faculty member and Downers leader. Currently I serve as a dissertation adviser in the Higher Education and Orga- Grove nizational Change program at Benedictine University. My educational background and involvement with ICCTA provide a critical perspective for leading COD and hiring a new president. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? Transparency, budget and expense controls. Priority will also be to hire an honorable and well qualified president. With all things being equal I would like to hire a female president, the first in COD’s 47 year history. I think this will be a positive change and will help COD move forward into the future. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I am an experienced board member, with almost 12 years as DuPage County Regional School trustee. I have a diverse background from public service to business ownership and experience as an accountant for several Fortune 500 companies, all which will help me to be a asset to the COD Board.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? All stakeholders must be brought together to hire a president who demonstrates … respected academic credentials, … administrative skills, vision, honesty, integrity, respect, has a proven record of collaboration and unconditional positive regard to restore trust and rapport with the employees and community. The president must provide an intellectual atmosphere conducive to stimulation and interchange of ideas that empowers employees and promotes harmony and teamwork … must share accurate and transparent information for the benefit of the board Sandra Pihos and the community. He/she must avoid managing by crisis and disagree diplomatically. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? Involved in Glen Ellyn education for 32 years, a state representative for 12 years, … a member of the Legislative Audit Commission, reviewing the stewardship of public funds, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force on Community Colleges, passed transparency laws, served on the DuPage County Workforce Development Board and the State Workforce Investment Board, member and president of the Glenbard Township District 87 School Board, negotiating 11 contracts with the teachers, AFSCME and SEIU. These experiences allowed me to hone my leadership skills, learn about good governance, due diligence, collaboration, negotiations and networking to obtain positive results. What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The current politicization of the college poses a serious threat to the continued progress and development of the college. It may interfere with our ability to attract the best candidates to lead the institution. COD is one of the pre-eminent community colleges in the country and it requires a president who can nurture the dynamic educational environment and work with the community. Fiscal concerns, transparency issues and quality academic programs must always be priorities. Strategically planning for ever-changing trends in educational and Kim Savage workforce needs will help to maintain a stable, and hopefully growing, enrollment. What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have a master’s degree Darien in education, majoring in college student services administration and a minor in business. I have more than three decades of employment in higher education with experience in policy development, budget analysis, strategic planning and project planning. I have worked with commuter student issues, developing programs for engagement to help them reach their academic goals. I serve on the Illinois Student Assistance Commission where we make it possible for students to obtain financial resources to attend college. I apply the unique insight and understanding of this lifetime of learning to my work with the board.

DOWNERS GROVE POLICE ACHIEVE ACCREDITATION EXCELLENCE Downers Grove Chief of Police Robert Porter announced today that the Downers Grove Police Department received Accreditation with Excellence from The Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This is the highest level of recognition awarded by CALEA. Only about 4% of CALEA accredited agencies meet the criteria for the Excellence award, which is about .25% of all police agencies in the nation. The professionalism of department personnel, the high quality of service provided to the community, and the well organized and thorough condition of the policy files reviewed during an on-site audit resulted in a very successful accreditation outcome. The accredited status will remain in effect for a three-year period. The purpose of CALEA's Accreditation Programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery - regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency. Congratulations to the hardworking members of the Downers Grove Police Department. Thank you for your commitment to excellence in public safety services.

Deeply beloved great-aunt, aunt and cousin to many. Daughter of the late Harry and Rose Shanker Colen, predeceased by brothers Albert and Sidney. Always deflecting praise, she rejoiced in the accomplishments of her husband and family - taking avid interest in every detail - and those of the many thousands of children, parents, teachers, and staff whose lives she deeply affected as a pioneering school psychologist and psychotherapist for over 50 years. All who knew her will remember her for her irreplaceable élan, penetrating intelligence, and indefatigable interest in everyone and everything around her. Utterly practical, intensely idealistic, furiously honest, wise and funny, generous and kind, devoted to living life with purpose and optimism to the very last. She set the standard and her legacy of love lives on. May her memory be for a blessing.

SOLVEIG ELISE SEDLET Born: Feb. 25, 1925 Died: March 19, 2015

Solveig Elise Sedlet, 90, of La Crosse passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015, at The Willows Assisted Living, La Crosse Wisconsin. Three weeks earlier, twenty-nine children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and significant others traveled from all over the country to celebrate her birthday.

ry ay She was overjoyed. Solveig was born to innkeepers Hans and Martha (Ahrenkiel) Petersen in the village of Fjelstrup, Denmark on February 25, 1925. Her family life was marked by love and hard work in the era before automobiles, telephones, and televisions. As children, she, her sister Gerda, and brother Willy observed or participated in the many dances and other events that took place at the inn. Nazi forces occupied Denmark when Solveig was 15. With it began years of air raids, curfews, scarcity of food and fuel, disappearances, and a spare bedroom occupied by enemy soldiers. She and friends found moments of joy and escape attending dances that ended before curfew, and as part of a rowing team that competed in the Baltic Sea. At age 18 she moved to Copenhagen to become a children's nurse in an orphanage for newborns. After the war, she set out to circle the world. She began by taking a job as a nanny for a family with four boys in worn-torn London, teaching herself to read English with newspapers and a dictionary. In 1945, at the age 24, with Gerda, she sailed to America and found work as a dental assistant in New Jersey. She met and married Raymond Hirsch in December 1950. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri and then Downers Grove, Illinois, giving birth to Karen, Ellen, Nina and John along the way. In December 1963, Ray died at age 45 and Solveig became a widow with children age 6 months to 10 years. In 1969, she met and married Jacob Sedlet, a widower and father of two children, Susan and Steven. So began the era of six kids, two dogs, and long family vacations sitting shoulder to shoulder in a big brown station wagon. Life moved on with both joys and sorrows, and eventually Jakes' death in March 2003 at age 81. Ever-resourceful Solveig had begun taking writing courses a number of

Solveig was independent-minded, an adventurer, a poet and a writer. By age 90, she had traveled much of the globe. It was, however, the people in her life-her family, friends, caregivers, and acquaintances that gave her the greatest joy. Scholars Downers Grove South High School Eileen Walsh-Rock Academic Achievements: National Honors Society, Honor roll every semester, Top 5% of her class School Activities (clubs, athletics): Marching Band, Varsity Girls Badminton, Wind Ensemble, Peer Tutor, Mustang Way Student Leader Community Service: Vacation Bible school teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Venture Crew Member, Volnteer for Feed My Starving Children, Volunteer for Food Pantry Nominated by Amy Klug, Counselor: “Eileen is clearly an excellent student whose strengths and accomplishments extend beyond the classroom. She was selected as a student leader because of her ability to role model the principles of the Mustang Way: being a respectful, responsible, and engaged student. Eileen focuses on doing what’s right, not because she wants to win awards or achieve notoriety, but because she is an individual with strong morals and values who wants to positively impact the world around her. She strives for success so that she can take pride in being herself, the result of which is gaining the utmost respect from those who are lucky enough to know her. Eileen’s teachers see her as an intent listener who is able to hear and conceptualize various viewpoints, and then respectfully and thoughtfully present her own. She is an unassuming student who respects and appreciates diversity, and attempts to see the world from various points-of-view. Eileen does not typically draw attention to all of her strengths and accomplishments, which is why I believe that she deserves this recognition. She has made a positive impact at DGS, and I am excited for her future and all the great things that are undoubtedly in store for her!”

Addison Trail High School Franc De Guzman Academic Achievements: Distinction Honor Roll all four years, National Honor Society School Activities: De Guzman is a two-year member and Co-President of the National Honor Society (NHS), he is the current President of Science Olympiad and he is Vice President of Business Professionals of America (BPA). But De Guzman does not stop there. He also is a contributing member of Model UN and Psychology Club, and he will attend the District 88 educational trip to Spain this spring. Community Service: Best Buddies, Pay It Forward and Feed My Starving Children Nominated by Erica Craig and Vicki Ream, Teachers: “De Guzman boasts a sterling academic record as a result of his tenacity and personal drive,” said Erica

Hinsdale South High School Shivali Patel Academic Achievements: Dean’s List: 9th grade - present, National Spanish Exam: Premium de oro (2013) de Plata (2014), Math team Awards, Science Olympiad Regionals 2013-14 School Activities: Class Oficers, Math Team, Science Olympiad, Badminton (Captain), Key Club, Habitat for Humanity, Cosmopolitan Club, Drama Club (Assistant Stage Mgr), Ambassadors, PLN, NHS (President) Community Service: Shavali has been heavily involved in her temple and church work. Her main emphasis on school activities are those that do community work. She is not just a participant but an active planner and student who works. Her endless work with Key Club and Habitat for Humanity are evidence of her dedication to civic minded causes. Nominated by Ellen Jacobson, School Counselor: “ I have known Shivali Patel for her entire career at Hinsdale South as her School Counselor, Ambassador Club Sponsor, and Class of 2015 Sponsor, and I can honestly say that I am thrilled to be writing in recommendation of her. When I meet eighth graders to register them before their Freshman year, they are normally reserved, quiet, and a little nervous. Shivali was so memorable to me because she exuded energy and was so obviously excited about all of the opportunity available to her at Hinsdale South she could barely sit still or stile her questions. This attitude has continued; Shivali has brought this energy and positive inluence to everything she does. In the time I have known her, she has never uttered a negative word in my presence or passed up an opportunity to make someone feel happier or reassured. As a student at Hinsdale South, it is hard to ind an equal. Shivali has continually taken on academic and social challenges and surmounted them. She professes to be a bookworm and nerd who blossomed here and can now call herself a carpenter on our drama tech crew, and even Captain of the State level Badminton team. Shivali says she had to learn to be outgoing and didn’t have much conidence growing up. This makes me smile, because it is a perfect example of her sweet and humble nature. The list of her other school activities would not be believable if I hadn’t witnessed much of her involvement. She is a blur before and after school as she makes her many meetings always with a smile on her face and with lots to contribute. As her sponsor for two clubs I have seen her in action making decisions, decorating for dances, and greeting new students. To say she is a breath of fresh air is an understatement.”

we went with tried-and-true Italian traditions – tiramisu and cannoli. The ladyfingers in the tiramisu imparted the coffee liqueur essence without being drenched, and a chocolate drizzle added to the delicate sweet treat. The cannoli’s delectable filling was surrounded by a slightly sweet and crisp shell, while crushed pistachios and an artful flourish of chocolate syrup added to the knockout flavor. Throughout our meal, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Our plates quickly were taken away, our water glasses remained filled, and our leftovers were packaged promptly. Our server and busser always arrived at the table with a smile. La Notte Due has lunch portions of its dinner menu available five days a week, and also offers a catering menu for anyone looking to bring the delicious taste of Italy home for a family party.

DARIEN – The phrase “la notte due” roughly translates from Italian as “the second night,” but La Notte Due could easily rank a first place in the local Italian dining pantheon. My date and I arrived for an early weekend dinner recently and were promptly seated in the elegant yet comfortable dining room, where bread materialized at our table. The Darien restaurant’s modern interior is warmed by wood floors and the paintings of Italian scenery adorning the walls. White tablecloths also enhance the surroundings. The attentive service that started with our arrival continued, with our water glasses quickly filled before our server came to take our drink order. Valparaiso bound Ava Porlier and fellow senior Miyax Leon anchor a dominating Mustangs midfield that also features sophomore Sarah Casey, who was brought up to the varsity squad near the end of last season. Junior forward Autumn Rasmussen will try to build on a breakout sophomore campaign in which she led the team in scoring. She will be flanked by sophomore Mackenzie Wisdom, who saw some playing time after being brought up late in the 2014 season. On the back line, junior Sara Foernssler was an all conference defender last season while sophomore Hannah Rossi has the ability to become a shut down defender. The Mustangs began the season Thursday with a 1-1 draw against Wheaton North.

Outlook: The DGS girls soccer team has their sights set on more than a 13th straight West Suburban Gold conference championship. Chris Hernandez, a longtime Downers Grove South boys assistant soccer coach, is now spearheading the girls program and believes a strong veteran core as well as a bevy of newcomers will help the Mustangs come playoff time. “We look to build upon our foundations of winning conference for the 13th straight year, but we are definitely a different team than last year,” Hernandez said. “The program is looking to win conference again as well as claim a regional title. “We have a very positive team dynamic, which has helped us set a high standard for ourselves. One of our biggest strengths is that everyone is starting over. All players understand that they need to prove themselves all over again.”

34 Local coach recovers from stroke, hosts tennis camps By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Chuck Enge has given much of his life to tennis, and tennis may help save his life. He has spent 50 years coaching tennis at the high school and club level, but that all seemed in jeopardy when he suffered a stroke Chuck Enge in May of 2014. It seems that tennis may have been the key to a full recovery. “Before the stroke I played singles four days a week,” Enge said. “The doctors told me, ‘That’s the reason you’re going to recover and you should get it all back.’ “They said, ‘We can’t believe what is happening to you. We don’t see people recover like you do.’” Less than a year later Enge, a recipient of the United State Professional Tennis Association’s National Service Award and an Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Famer, is planning for a full summer of tennis-related activity. Currently, he is gearing up to lead a summer tennis clinic at the Downers Grove Swim & Racquet Club. The first clinic is scheduled for April 12. After a summer full of clinics and camps at the club and at various area park districts, he will head to the U.S. Open during Labor Day weekend. In October, he will make his 15th trip to Norway in the past 12 years to continue his efforts to help Norwegian tennis players find places to play collegiately in the U.S. Enge has recovered to the point that his doctors have given him the freedom to travel on his own. He recently passed his driving test and purchased a new car. It’s clear that the stroke, which is sometimes a setback for those who suffer one, is having little impact on the way he wants to live his life. “I have zero patience and I have only one speed,” Enge said. “I haven’t slowed down a bit.”

Outlook: Boasting a lineup with returning talent at all positions, the Trojans believe their stingy defense and varsity experience will give opposing offenses headaches. “We hope to continue improving as a program and be competitive this season as a result of strong team defense and varsity experience,” DGN head coach Bob Calder said. Senior Emma Krick is a strong defender that is aggressive in the air and can also drive the offense. She scored five goals and had two assists last season from the back line. Junior Alyse Dutcher is a lockdown defender who solidified the DGN defense. Senior midfielder Ellie Metros is both a calming presence and offensive threat, coming off a four-goal, six-assist campaign in 2014. Western Illinois bound forward Bianca Romay is the Trojans’ offensive catalyst while senior forward Lexi Cittadine knows when to attack the goal. The Downers Grove North offense gets an added boost this season with the addition of Jessica Ridderhoff, A senior forward who is in the program for the first time this year and attending Washington University (St. Louis) next year.

Outlook: The Redwings hope to improve upon a solid season in which the girls captured a regional championship and advanced to the sectional final. And with eight returning starters from last year’s squad back in the fold, a sectional title and trip to state is a very real possibility. Three-year starter Rachel Bernicky is the leader of the Benet defense, while fouryear starting keeper Emma Hlavin is one of the most talented goalies in the area. Ellie Bumpus is a junior defensive mid that boasts three years of starting experience and can drive possession in the middle of the field. Senior forward Loretta Elder has a deft scoring touch and classmate Jackie Kaufman has great speed. Newcomers Kerry Abello and Erin Flynn are both ex- Benet’s Loretta Elder (right) fights for control with York’s Emipected to see ample playing ly Mueller in the season opener March 20, 2014, in Elmhurst. Downers Grove South’s Michaela Hackbarth runs in the 4x800 meter relay March 9 at the 2015 Mustang Relays at North Central College in Naperville. and placed second in the 200-meter dash at Friday’s West Suburban Gold boys indoor conference championship meet. Finley also competed for the Mustangs’ 4x200 relay team that finished in first place. The DGS 4x400 relay team came in second place. Additionally, senior Nick Kersting came in first place in the 55-meter hurdles while junior Trevon Geary placed third in the event. Senior Ethan Kirk took home gold in the 1600 with a time of 4:33.72. In the 3200, Jack Lalonde came in second place with a time of 9:41.07. Nick Klecki finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump while Jeremy Taylor came in third in the triple jump. Danny Capagna also took second in the shot put.

Downers Grove North

The Trojans came in seventh at Friday’s West Suburban Silver boys indoor conference championship meet.

BOYS BASKETBALL St. Mary’s of Gostyn

The St. Mary’s of Gostyn of Downers Grove 7B1 boys basketball capped an undefeated regular season with a second-place finish in the playoffs. The boys finished with a 15-1 overall record and are the only team at St. Mary’s to go undefeated in the regular season. The team is comprised of players John Heneghan, Jack Sidler, Ethan Kelly, Emmit Culligan, Sion McKillip, Seth Coyle and Sam Weinheimer. Matt Culligan is the head coach, Tom Heneghan is the assistant coach and Jack Culligan is the team manager.

Adam Jagielo’s two-out RBI powered the Westmont baseball team to its first victory of the season Friday against IC. After digging himself into an 0-2 hole, Jagielo laced a single to center field, scoring both Jackson Fischer and Adam Doll and giving the Sentinels a 6-4 lead that held up in the last inning and a half. Jagielo, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the comeback win.

Soulier: How does it feel to get the first win of the season in comeback fashion? Jagielo: It feels great to get a win after yesterday’s tough loss [in the season opener against RB]. This team never gives up, never stops fighting, so this was a great way to end

the week.

Soulier: It’s still very early in the season, but how are you feeling at the plate? Jagielo: I was a little ner-

vous in my first at bat, but I felt pretty good in my second and third trips to the plate.

Soulier: Your third at bat in the top of the sixth was with two runners in scoring position. Although you fell behind in the count, you were able to dig yourself out. Take me through that at bat. Jagielo: I actually went up

to one of my coaches before that at bat and said if he [Doll] gets on, I’m going to knock all the runners in. He made a couple good pitches to get ahead in the count, but it was really cool to get that hit and keep my word.
