Voters shoot down facilities referendum By EVAN SHIELDS DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove will continue to try to find a cost-effective way to improve its existing facilities after voters overwhelmingly shot down a proposed referendum April 7. The advisory referendum for facilities upgrades provided an opportunity for public input on a multiphase, multiyear plan that included constructing new police and fire stations, a new fleet maintenance garage and a new village hall. It was expected to cost about $50 million. There were 7,672 votes cast against the referendum – a whopping 87.6 percent, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. Only 1,082 votes were cast in favor of the referendum. The Downers Grove for Responsible Government Coalition petitioned the village to place the initiative on the ballot. Coalition co-founder Tim

I’m very pleased with the outcome,” he said. In March, the village announced it would hold off on the facility plan because of uncertainty at the state
level with funding. In particular, Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed budget cuts that would include a 50 percent reduction of state income tax revenues, resulting in a $2.4 million loss for the village. Werner hoped the village would abandon the proposal instead of waiting to see how the budget shapes up. “This vote, I guess, would be a validation of what we think is the right thing for Downers Grove,” he said. Mayor Martin Tully, who won reelection with 65 percent of the vote, said the village will have to go back to the drawing board to find a method of updating facilities that is not only cost effective but community approved. “What it says very loudly is the proposal put on the table is not supported by the community,” he said. DOWNERS GROVE – Martin Tully has identified facilities, finances and infrastructure as the three biggest issues he will face after winning re-election for Downers Grove mayor April 7. “I’m feeling overwhelmed by the support of the people of Downers Grove … who want to continue my leadership for four years,” he said. Preliminary results from the DuPage County Election Commission show Tully got 5,686 votes – 65.3 percent of the total amount. His opponent, Geoff Neustadt, a commissioner on the village council, received 3,018 votes. Tully said he was “humbled and stunned” by the margin of victory in the April 7 election. He said he believes village facilities need to be addressed in a way that is not only cost-effective but supported by the community. The village’s existing facility plan involves building a new village hall, police station and fire station at a potential cost of about $50 million. Voters overwhelmingly rejected an advisory referendum on the plan, and the council previously announced it would not move forward with the plan because of financial uncertainty at the state level. Tully’s two other main pri-
pates a “really smooth transition” with three new commissioners on the board. Having spent the past 15 years as a public servant, he has not decided if he will pursue politics again in the future. Rheintgen did not return calls seeking comment.

Community High School District 99’s search for a new superintendent will be a central focus for the three winners of the April 7 election for Board of Education. Incumbents Nancy Kupka and Michael Davenport were re-elected to the board. They will be joined by Donald Renner, who narrowly beat incumbent Keith Matune for the final spot. Davenport said he thinks his experience on the board will help him moving forward because he will know what qualities to look for in a superintendent. “The whole culture in our
schools, the fiscal responsibility, the things that we do … that only happens with excellent leadership at the top,” he said. Kupka agreed the superintendent search will be a big factor for the board. In addition, she said there will be financial issues the board will face, including paying for new Chromebooks schools will get beginning next year. Kupka, who serves as the board’s president, had the most votes with 9,625 – 30.2 percent, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. Davenport had 8,817 votes, or 27.7 percent. Renner had 6,788 votes – 21.3 percent – and Matune got 6,638 votes – 20.8 percent.
“I’m obviously very happy and honored and appreciative to all the people who voted for me,” Kupka said. Kupka added that the other winners will be positive forces on the board. Davenport also was grateful to the community for re-electing him. “I’m glad that the community thinks I’m doing a good enough job that they want me to continue to represent them,” he said. Renner said this is the first election he’s ever been involved with. “I really didn’t know what to expect last night,” he said the morning after the election. Renner was in a tight race with Matune for the last spot on the board, and he said elec-

tion night was “nerve-wracking” and “mentally exhausting.” Davenport said the district will face “very tough times” financially. It also has had to add some teachers to handle federal mandates. “Going forward, we’re not going to be able to do that, and we’re going to have tough decisions coming up,” he said. Renner said he’s going to continue attending school board meetings as a district resident until he formally joins the body, and make sure he is up to speed on all the issues facing the district. He said the hiring of a new superintendent and the upcoming collective bargaining agreement will be the two biggest issues he will face as a board member. Matune declined to comment.
District 99 to focus on superintendent search The Community High School District 99 Board of Education will be tasked with finding a replacement for Superintendent Mark McDonald. McDonald has previously said he will retire when his contract expires June 30, 2016. Jill Browning, director of communications for the district, said the search is in the “very early stages.” Browning said the board will hire a search firm to help select the new superintendent. She said there will also be community input on the next superintendent. McDonald has been superintendent of the district since 2008.

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A lawsuit filed against a Downers Grove sperm bank over wrongful insemination has been moved from Cook County to DuPage County. Jennifer Cramblett of Uniontown, Ohio, filed the suit in September 2014 against Midwest Sperm Bank claiming wrongful birth and breach of contract. According to the lawsuit, Cramblett was inseminated with samples from a black donor instead of the white donor she and her partner originally chose. Cramblett and her partner, Amanda Zinkon, contacted the bank in June
2011 and made two separate purchases. The couple decided they wanted samples from Donor 380, but the order they received was from Donor 330. “All of the thought, care and planning that she and Amanda had undertaken to control their baby’s parentage had been rendered meaningless,” the lawsuit stated. “In an instant, Jennifer’s excitement and anticipation of her pregnancy was replaced with anger, disappointment and fear.” Timothy Misny, Cramblett’s attorney, and Robert Summers Jr., an attorney for the sperm bank, did not return calls for comment. Cramblett learned of the mistake in April 2012 when she tried to order more
vials from Donor 380, only to be told she had received vials from Donor 330. Midwest Sperm Bank refunded money from one purchase, but not from a previous visit, according to the suit. The error was made, the suit stated, because the bank’s records are kept using paper and pen rather than electronically, and the numbers 380 and 330 look similar on paper. According to the suit, Cramblett and her partner love their daughter, who was born in August 2012, but the error has caused hardship for them. “Jennifer lives each day with fears, anxieties and uncertainty about her future and [her daughter]’s future,” the suit stated.

She described the town she lives in as “racially intolerant.” Even getting a haircut for her daughter can be a hassle, according to the suit. “To get a decent cut, Jennifer must travel to a black neighborhood, far from where she lives, where she is obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome,” the suit stated. Cramblett believes this means she will have to relocate from her current community to one that is racially diverse. She is requesting a jury trial and damages in excess of $50,000.

St. Mary of Gostyn cultivates a beautiful children’s garden

With strong support of parish priests and staff, hundreds of volunteers of all ages, and generous financial donations, parishioner Hilary Denk and her husband John founded the Children’s Garden at St. Mary of Gostyn Parish in Downers Grove. They developed a well-crafted mission statement: “The Children’s Educational Garden is an organic garden that fosters an appreciation of God’s gifts so children and adults naturally become stewards of our Earth.” Located near the intersection of Fairview and Prairie Avenues, the 62’ x 120’ plot is divided into three distinct areas named by the children when the garden was founded in 2003. God’s Little Greenhouse is a circular plot where the school children plant vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Engraved bricks are also regularly installed to

Library technology inspires inventions Colin Crilly makes me smile. He’s a budding Thomas Edison. He embodies the creativity, imagination, confidence, and persistence of a master inventor and innovator. His exercise of these remarkable traits is a Downers Grove Public Library success story. Colin is 13 years old, a seventh-grader at Glen Oaks COMMUNITY Therapeutic Day School in VOICE Glendale Heights. He lives Rick in Downers Grove. He’s had a library card since second Ashton grade. He visits us several times a week, usually arriving by bicycle. Before our major remodeling project and expansion of technological resources, he did a lot of book borrowing. Nowadays, Colin comes to the library with two things in mind: practicing his video game skills and using the 3-D printer to produce his latest inventions. He shows the intense concentration and task focus that accompany his Asperger’s condition. He enjoys others’ enthusiasm for his work. An article in Scholastic magazine, reporting on the making of a prosthetic hand, was Colin’s first exposure to 3-D printing. This amazing technology is revolutionizing the way things are made. When he learned that the library had acquired a 3-D printer for public learning and use, he went to work. Independently exploiting the online resources known as Thingiverse and TinkerCAD, he learned the programming skills he needed and identified some objects he wanted to try. He developed his product designs on a computer at home and loaded them onto small USB computer drives, ready for action at the library. He let his imagination take him in whatever direction it wanted to go until he found ideas he liked. Several of Colin’s inventions relate specifically to the Downers Grove Public Library. He has designed a bookend, developed a prototype of a customized desk name plaque, produced a token disk bearing the library’s geometric logo and made a cookie cutter with our logo in the center. Last week, Colin was discussing all this with me. He showed me the design for the cookie cutter, but he had not yet been able to produce it. Like many enterprising technological pioneers, he lacked start-up capital. He needed money to pay for the plastic filament used by the 3-D printer. I offered a personal investment of $10. He sprang from the room. The following day, the cookie cutter was on my desk. As recently as three years ago, no one would have imagined these events at a public library. We are growing and changing, supporting exploration and learning in many new ways. Inspired by Colin and many others, we will continue.

A few things became clear after this past rain. First, the flooding has gotten worse in many areas. And secondly, the stormwater fee, or “Sandack rain tax,” will continue to increase year by year, and the village has done nothing to address the issue of overbuilding, choosing instead to spread the cost around. I’m hoping this new council can move to actually enforce the existing building code, instead of granting waivers and favors for their builder buddies.

DOWNERS GROVE – Construction resumed Monday on the Metra platform at Downers Grove’s Main Street station. Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said crews will be putting new concrete at the east end of the station platforms. Both the inbound and outbound platforms will be rebuilt. The east ends of the platform will be closed during construction, she said. Village Communications Director Doug Kozlowski said the estimated date of completion for the project is July 3. Access to the platforms from Washington Street will be restricted during the project and the west side of the Washington Street crossing will be
closed to pedestrians, according to a Metra news release. The road crossings at Main and Washington streets will both be open to traffic. Kozlowski said Warren Avenue will be reduced to one lane between Washington and Elm streets during construction. Some commuter parking has been taken out of service to stage materials and equipment, according to the release. The parking lot east of Washington Street will be closed, Kozlowski said, and it’s possible additional spots will be closed off temporarily throughout the project. The west ends of the inbound and outbound platforms were replaced last summer, according to the release. The cost of the project is $1.1 million, and it is being paid for entirely by Metra.

Gerald “Jerry� E. Olson, age 78, longtime resident of Clarendon Hills, died on Sunday, April 12, 2015. Born February 1, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, Jerry attended Downers Grove North High School and later Eureka College, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Jerry served a short stint in the United States Marine Corps, and later spent his career driving buses, semis and dump trucks. Jerry is survived by his wife, Gail; and his two daughters, Kelly Conger and Amy Wallace. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Anna, Kaitlyn, Luke and Aidan along with many family members and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Hilda; his brother, Harry; his son-in-law, John Conger; and beloved dog Abbie. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15th at Toon Funeral Home, 4920 Main Street, Downers Grove IL. Rudolph Liska, 89, of Westmont, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2015, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Born in Durcina, Czechoslovakia to John and Caroline Liska, Rudy was an independent, energetic man who passionately filmed and documented life for 65 years. He was the foundation of his family, teaching strength, perseverance, and financial responsibility. In WWII, he proudly served in the US Army, was a prisoner of war, and survived to tell about it. He remained stimulated by seeking out new life experiences and was extremely dedicated to his three daughters, Christine (Jerry) White, of Palm Harbor; FL, Linda (Michael) Lamy, of Grandview, MO; and Julie Strasshofer, of Dickson, TN. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and seventeen greatgrandchildren, a niece, and a nephew. Services were held Friday, April 10th at West Suburban Funeral Home, Westmont. The trio of candidates that campaigned under the name the Clean Slate and received significant support from Vice Charles C h a i r w o m a n Bernstein Kathy Hamilton swept the April 7 election. D e a n n e Mazzochi came in the lead with 42,903 votes, according to Deanne p r e l i m i n a r y Mazzochi reports from the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will and Cook county clerks. Frank Napoli- Frank tano followed Napolitano with 34,011 votes. Charles Bernstein was third with 28,352 votes. All candidates will commit to sixyear terms on the board. The slate won all three seats in DuPage and Will counties and two out of three in Cook County, with incumbents Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage pushing Bernstein into fifth place. Following the trio was former state representative Sandra Pihos with 26,966 votes. Other candidates included Dan Bailey, Claire Ball, David
Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger Kempa and Joseph Wozniak. After a long and tumultuous campaign that saw candidates field questions on topics including lack of transparency with the current board, public discontentment with college President Robert Breuder and accusations of financial wrongdoing at the school, the incoming trustees believe the taxpayers are more than ready for change. “Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of DuPage,� said Mazzochi, Napolitano and Bernstein in a statement distributed election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count, and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.� Napolitano said the race was all about the need for reform and emphasized the election of the Clean Slate shows taxpayers are ready for something new. “The voters have spoken,� he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the

The Village of Downers Grove, in partnership with Accurate Document Destruction, will host a Paper-Shredding Event on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. until noon at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue. (Fenced-in lot off Curtiss Street)
The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available.
This free service is offered to Downers Grove residents in an effort to prevent identity theft. Participants may be asked to show proof of Downers Grove residency. Each vehicle is allowed to bring one brown paper bag OR one banker's box filled with personal paperwork. A bonded and insured representative of Accurate Document Destruction will use a crosscut shredder to render documents beyond reconstruction. Shredded materials are taken to a recycling facility. Identity theft is a serious crime. Thieves often look through unsuspecting victims' trash in search of discarded documents containing your name, address or phone number, as well other personal information such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years trying to clear their names and restore their credit record. One of the most important things you can do is to shred any personal documents you wish to discard.

MAIN STREET TRAIN STATION PLATFORM WORK • The Main Street platform reconstruction project is resuming and is scheduled to be completed by July 3. • Demolition is planned to begin on the south (inbound) platform, and then move to the north (outbound) platform as soon as possible. • The sidewalk along the west side of Washington Street, where it crosses the tracks (between Burlington and Warren), will be closed for the duration of the project. Pedestrians are to cross the tracks on the east side of Washington, or at Main Street. • Accessible parking is available at the station. • The western half of both platforms will remain open throughout construction. • Warren Avenue will be one-way westbound from Elm Street to Washington Street. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove South baseball team knows consistent production from the middle of their lineup will greatly increase their chances of another long playoff run. If the Mustangs get more performances from No. 6 hitter Joe LaCivita like his breakout game Monday against York, the team will be in great shape come postseason. The senior outfielder went 2 for 2, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth as DGS prevailed 5-4 against the visiting Dukes. “That was an amazing feeling; it felt like I was in the cage and just taking practice swings,” LaCivita said of the home run. “I thought I might get a curve, but then my eyes lit up when he hung a fastball.” The 6-foot-4 senior turned on the 1-1 pitch and belted a home run that traveled over the center field fence, between the 400- and 365-foot markers. “Wow, what can you say about that,” DGS head coach Darren Orel said. “We are not typically a home run-hitting team and Joe’s not necessarily a home run hitter, but it’s great to see him rewarded when he makes a good pass at the ball. He’s a big, strong kid and I keep stressing to him that the home runs and big hits will come if he keeps taking good swings like that.” Starting pitcher Zach Jones did his part, going the distance against York and notching a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, the Mustangs’ sixth in a row. For the game, Jones struck out two and allowed five hits and four earned runs, all of which came in the top of the third inning. The key moment in Monday’s game came after Jones’ four-run third when DGS stepped up to the plate trailing 4-1.

Hedgcock tastes perfection as Mustangs beat Hinsdale Central SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Caroline Hedgcock recorded a perfect game and blasted two home runs Monday as the Downers Grove South softball team defeated Hinsdale Central 14-0 and improved their unblemished record to 8-0. Hedgcock went 2 for 3 against Central, totaling five RBIs and two runs scored. Both of her home runs came in the fourth inning. On the mound, the University of Maryland recruit struck out seven batters and walked none while recording her momentous feat. She got the final Hinsdale Central batter to ground out to end the game. The Mustangs’ bats came to life in the fourth inning as the girls plated 13 runs. In addition to Hedgcock’s’ two homers, Zahrya McFarland tallied a solo home run and Lindsey Hermann belted a
three-run jack. Megan LoBianco also added an RBI double and Rebekah Ondracek recorded an RBI single. Before Monday’s contest, DGS defeated Bolingbrook 162. Payton Buresch earned the victory, spreading out seven hits and two earned runs over six innings. She struck out four batters. Nicole Bowman led the Mustangs’ offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Downers Grove South faced Naperville North on Tuesday and returns to action Thursday at Naperville Central.

CICERO – Downers Grove North knows it can always rely on Ellena Metros in crunch time. Metros came through again for the Trojans on Friday. The senior midfielder broke a scoreless tie with 29:34 remaining in the second half to propel her team to a 3-0 victory against a tenacious Riverside Brookfield squad Friday at Carbajal Field. The Trojans won for the third straight game, with Metros scoring in each match. “That first goal was so important,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “It took Allie really composing herself and putting it in the back of the net because we had several chances and we just left them all on the field, so breaking that ice allowed us to go from there.” Ironically, all three Downers North goals came into the teeth of a strong wind. The Trojans outshot the Bulldogs by an 11-0 margin with the wind at their backs in the first half but had nothing to show for it as RB goalie Karli Riviera made five of her eight saves. But Metros solved Riviera in the 51st minute when she blasted a left-footed shot under pressure for her fourth goal. “It was a little frustrating but we tried to keep our compo-
sure, and once we settled down we went and attacked,” Metros said. “When we rush as a team we tend to get antsy, so it’s just better to settle down and get composed and stay calm then look up and find the open net.” Metros, a four-year starter, is in charge of keeping the Trojans composed and her example helped the offensive heat up on an otherwise chilly night. Jessica Ridderhoff scored just 40 seconds after Metros off a long feed from Emily Redpath, and Lexi Cittadine added an insurance goal on a breakaway with 7:09 remaining. “Ellie is incredibly important,” Calder said. “She leads by example every single day. She does everything we ask her to do. You saw it [against RB] – she played 80 minutes full speed and really just calmed our team down.” Metros will not play in college, instead focusing on academics at the University of Colorado Boulder, so this season has more meaning to her. “I’m definitely playing my hardest just because this is it,” she said. The win against RB upped North’s record to 4-2 before a 2-1 overtime loss against Loyola in the first round of the PepsiCo Showdown tournament Saturday. Soulier: Take me through your at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning. LaCivita: I was anticipating
curveball; he had great command of his curve all night, so I thought he might go back to it. Then I just saw a high fastball up in the zone. I swung and for a split second I didn’t
realize I hit it, then I could feel I made good contact so I took off towards first. I looked up and saw the center fielder and I could tell it was gone.
Soulier: How comfortable are you right now in the batter’s box? LaCivita: Every game I’m feeling a little more comfortable from the plate. I got off to a little slow start when we were on our spring trip in Memphis, Tenn., but I think I’ve found my swing and doing a good job of waiting for the right pitches.
Soulier: You guys haven’t lost since returning from Memphis. What do you need to do to extend your six-game winning streak? LaCivita: We just need to keep playing fundamental baseball and make the plays we need to make and we’ll be fine.
