The district has been working with Wight & Company, an architecture firm in Darien, on the plans. Craig Siepka, a lead architect with the company, presented the information to the Board of Education at its April 13 meeting. To perform all the proposed upgrades at Downers Grove North High School would cost $44.5 million to $47.8 million. Upgrades at Downers Grove South High School would cost $43.1 million to $46.4 million. This does not include air conditioning and heating units for any additions. Performing an upgrade on everything included in the proposal would range from $92.6 million to $111.7 million. The board did not discuss how the projects would be funded. The plan was developed with input from district community members, ad-

Board member Michael Davenport said a lot of the proposal included items the board would have to address in the future. “It’s not realistic for me to present things to my clients that I know my clients can’t afford to do. And I have to say, with all frankness, I feel a little bit like that’s what I’m looking at right here,” he said. Board member Terry Pavesich said this is only one portion of the master facilities plan. When figuring in everything else, total cost could expand to $150 million. Board member Julia Beckman said the board went through a similar plan 15 years ago, and most of the items presented were cut from the old plan because of cost. “These are issues that have dragged on and on, and I think it’s great they’re going into the plan,” she said. Board members agreed the administration would have to prioritize items in the plan to find out which projects are the biggest need for the district. The master facilities plan will return to the board for further consideration in the summer.

Local couple receives Easter Seals award for volunteer work By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Tom and Kathy Liss never expected to get involved with Easter Seals. Now, they’ve been honored for their volunteer work with the organization. The Lisses received the Carol and Jack Sanicki Crystal Heart Award during the Easter Seals DuPage and Fox Valley Tom Liss annual Benefit Gala on April 11. Kathy said it was a “great event” and she and her husband were “humbled without a doubt.” The couple became Kathy Liss involved with Easter Seals in 1983, after Kathy gave birth to premature twin daughters. After a few months, one daughter, Amy, did not appear to be moving properly, and they went to Easter Seals, which provides services to those with disabilities. Amy was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy. She receives occupational, physical and speech therapy services at Easter Seals. Amy’s physical therapist

Many kids have dreams of making it in Hollywood. Living in the midwest, it seems difficult to translate those dreams into reality. According to Lisa Morgan, owner of MBM Talent Management, it’s not as difficult as you think. Years ago, Lisa, a Chicago native, had a young son interested in acting. He worked hard, starting in commercials and eventually landing the part as Mel Gibson’s son Nathan in “The Patriot”. Lisa acted as his manager, gaining experience and making connections in L.A. After living in California, she moved back to the midwest and started developing local talent here in the Chicago area. For a ballet-themed show called “Bunheads”, Lisa started looking at dance studios. What she found impressed her; boys and girls involved in dance classes proved to have a lot of talent. Advanced dancers, especially, exhibited an amazing amount of discipline, work ethic, confidence, and passion for their art. Dancing helps kids prepare for a ca-

reer in acting in various ways: dancing on stage helps many overcome stage fright and shyness; dancers gain confidence in their skills through the many years they spend perfecting their art; and skills learned in taking direction and criticism, and working hard to do their best, translates well from the studio to the set. According to Lisa, kids don’t have to live in L.A. to find success in Hollywood. She describes acting as a relationship-based business; her company, MBM (Management By Morgan), matches agents with kids who have a goal to be in film. MBM Talent Management will be offering a mini-workshop at Pure Vibe Dance Center in Westmont on April 18th. The 3-hour workshop will introduce participants to the audition process, including what agents are looking for and what is needed from aspiring actors and actresses.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Fire Department has been awarded a Class 1 designation from the Insurance Service Organization, according to a village news release. The award was announced Thursday and is the highest public protection classification a department can receive. In all, 0.19 percent of fire departments nationwide have the Class 1 designation. Downers Grove is one of four departments in Illinois with the rating. Classification is based on three main areas of a fire suppression system: emergency communications, fire department and water supply. In addition, the classification includes a community risk reduction section that recognizes efforts to reduce loss through fire prevention, public fire safety education and fire investigation. Property and business owners in communities with a high classification can benefit from lower insurance rates.

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove is the setting of a new novel released in March. “The Fifth Floor” was written by Batavia resident Julie Oleszek, who grew up in Woodridge. It is her first published novel. She took time off from her job teaching at Beebe Elementary School in Naperville to write some of the book. Oleszek recently spoke to Suburban Life reporter Evan Shields.

Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB 16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB 16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • Westmont District 201 would lose $967,000

of the $1.2 million it got in 2014. • Lisle District 202 would be forced to forgo about $1 million of its $1.2 million in funding. • Valley View District 365U (which serves Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Downers Grove), on the other hand, would get an $8.8 million boost on top of its $35 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB 1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” said state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair, but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny, because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

Construction companies need to pay for damage caused to roads

I just read that the village of La Grange Park is going to spend a lot of their funds to repair the roads near the Heatherdale subdivision. Those roads were beaten up by the heavy construction traffic for the better part of three years. I hope La Grange Park and [the] surrounding towns realize in the future, when a builder has a large remodeling project, I hope they are responsible for fixing all the roads that lead to and from these projects. Why should Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to turn right I never understood why there was a â&#x20AC;&#x153;no taxpayers have to pay for the damage?

Council gives Clyde Estates plan preliminary approval By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council is prepared to move forward with a plan for the reconstruction of streets in the Clyde Estates subdivision. Council members gave their verbal support of the plan, which was presented at the April 14 council meeting. The proposal will go out to bid in the next few weeks, and the council could approve a contract after that. The project has been scaled back from its original plan, which included adding sidewalks and a traffic circle at Webster Place, Washington Street and 60th Place. Those were removed after negative feedback from residents of the subdivision. The biggest part of the plan is reconstruction of all roads in the neighborhood. There will be ditches added to the sides of the roads to help drain water from the area. Nan Newlon, director of public works for the village, said 87 percent of the ditches will be a standard depth, which is less than 2.5 feet. The other 13 percent would have a depth greater than 2.5 feet. As a result of the new ditches, there will be 17 trees removed. New-

Trees that are removed will be replanted, Newlon said. “We will be working with each resident as we go through those sections,” she said. Some ditches can be outfitted with bioswales – short plants that are used to filter runoff water – but will only be included if the homeowner wants it. Andy Sikich, assistant director of public works for engineering, said the village would plant the bioswale and the homeowner would maintain it.

Commissioner Sean Durkin said since the sidewalks have been taken out of the plan, it’s a project he can support. “I think this is a fair project with the right components,” he said. Commissioner Geoff Neustadt said the work the village has done with the residents has been good for the overall project. “I think the amount of scrutiny this project gets is Downers Grove at its best,” Neustadt said. But residents still had concerns about the project. Jon Polivka, a Clyde Estates resident, had concerns about the ability for the new road to drain. The base of the

road will be clay underneath concrete. “There’s not going to be any drainage there,” Polivka said. Resident Connie Butler said she was concerned about a portion of the streets being removed to reduce speeding in the neighborhood. By removing those streets, Butler said it would be more difficult for kids to walk to school and get around the neighborhood. “Now there’s no place to walk,” she said. Butler also was opposed to including bioswales in the neighborhood. “You’re changing the whole dynamic of that grassy area. You’re changing Clyde Estates,” she said. Resident Bea Bennett said she was “surprised” the council was discussing the item. She said she requested detailed plans of the Clyde Estates plan and wanted time to review the plans before the council voted to move forward. Laurel Bowen, who also lives in the neighborhood, said she didn’t want the roads to be changed without the village having done a traffic study. Village officials have been meeting with residents throughout the process of designing the project. Residents requested another meeting before the project goes out to bid. Officials said they would set up another meeting date soon.

She instilled the same love for the piano in her son Jason at a very young age. Janice met her first husband, Ronald G. Chochola, while in medical school and married the day after they both graduated in 1965. Divorced in 1997. In 1998, she chanced a meeting arranged by a mutual friend with Mr. Robert Stokes.She had an immediate affection to Bob and they wed in 2000. Widowed in 2007. In her careers of caring for children, she has touched the lives of many people. Her compassion, delightful sense of humor, and talent will be sorely missed. We will remember her as a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbor who constantly put the well-being of others before her own. College of DuPage comes under federal investigation By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In an event signaling more trouble for the long-embattled College of DuPage, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued a subpoena to the school for documents pursuant to an official criminal investigation. The subpoena, dated April 13, revolves around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009. The legal action follows a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in recent months. “The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation,” college spokesman Randall Samborn said. Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been an outspoken critic of the current trustees and administration and is poised to become the next chairwoman, said the college intended to cooperate with law enforcement but also gave some stern advice. “I want to issue a warning to the administrators and any other individual at the college not to destroy any papers or transactions ... or any evidence of the potential of wrongdoing – that’s a criminal offense,” she said. Hamilton said she had reason to believe “something like that is going on” but declined to speak further. Chairwoman Erin Birt did not respond to a request for comment. A major focus of the investigation centers on the spending habits of President Robert Breuder, trustees and senior management. In November, it was revealed college officials ex-

pensed questionable items at on-campus restaurant Waterleaf, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. The board also has been under fire for a $763,000 buyout awarded to Breuder earlier this year. The trustees were scheduled to meet April 16, but officials announced a cancellation, citing deference to the new members elected April 7. Samborn said there was “no connection between the receipt of the federal grand jury subpoenas and decisions not to hold the meeting.” The subpoena also delved into accusations that foundation board members inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the college. Particular controversy last month surrounded foundation board member Carla Burkhart, who got $630,000 in no-bid contracts for design work at the school through her firm Herricane Graphics. College and foundation officials have since defended the work, with foundation Executive Director Catherine Brod – who has announced she is stepping down in October – saying in a statement that foundation board members with contracts had been doing work for the school before serving on the board. A separate federal subpoena was issued April 13 for information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. The document asked for class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials. The school is required to provide all records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Lisle office or testify April 23 before a grand jury at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the first subpoena and April 30 for the second.

While at Western Illinois University, his adviser showed him the Museum of Geology on campus. Schane said the experience was “awesome.” He had loved fossils as long as he could remember and decided to get a degree in geology – a choice that eventually led him to open Jim’s Fine Coins, Fossils & Minerals in Downers Grove. “This is like walking into the past,” Schane said of his store. Schane had a store in Darien he operated for seven years. He’s been in his current space at 2321 Ogden Ave. about a year. Schane has been selling and trading fossils 25 years but never had a storefront before opening the shop in Darien. “I kind of turned a hobby into a business,” he said. “It’s something I truly enjoy.” His favorite fossil is still the first one he ever found – a trilobite he discovered in a rock formation during his college years. It was in good condition

and a complete fossil. “I just thought it was the coolest thing in the world,” he said. Today, it’s sitting in his house, and although it’s only worth a couple bucks, Schane said he wouldn’t sell it for anything. He started his collection by finding his own fossils, going to places like Africa, South America and Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Now that he has a storefront, Schane can’t travel to go fossil hunting anymore and buys most of the items showcased in the store. Schane said his retail collection includes fossils, rocks and minerals that are “older than the first human.” He also has coins at the store, which he started collecting when he was a kid. “We’ve got coins older than your grandfather’s grandfather,” he said.

County leaders came together Tuesday to announce plans for a greener Du-Page during the next decade and a half. In a news conference at the DuPage County Administrative Building, the DuPage Green Government Council announced a public awareness initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the county by 10 percent by 2020 and 20 percent by 2030. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the Cool DuPage program, an offshoot of a Sierra Club’s nationwide county initiative, is a continuation of environmental work in the county. “For more than two decades, DuPage County government has implemented a series of policies that benefit the environment and provide savings for taxpayers,” he said. He pointed to the construction of a power plant for the county complex, the purchase of more than 30 alternative fuel vehicles, rooftop vegetation and solar panels and the replacement of old equipment with more energy efficient models as examples of the prog-

ress the county has made. Should the county reach its goals, it will be equivalent to taking more than 480,000 vehicles off the road each year, Cronin said. Jack Darin, director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, said local government involvement on air pollution problems is critical. “Our local government leaders – they’re focused every day on delivering basic services and results for their citizens,” he said. “And DuPage County has shown us by example with what they’ve done ... that energy efficiency pays off big time.” Cronin and fellow county board member and Environmental Committee Chairman Tony Michelassi said the effort could not only make a difference for the environment and public health, but also for businesses and private pocketbooks. Michelassi said businesses with a 500,000 square-foot office building could save up to $120,000 annually at the 20-percent target through energy efficiency. RX DRUG DISPOSAL PROGRAM The Downers Grove Police Department Prescription Drug Disposal Program provides residents with a way to safely dispose of old prescription medications. This program is by appointment only. Improper disposal of medications can pollute drinking water with toxic chemicals. Storing unused medications can pose other safety issues. It is estimated that each day 2500 teenagers get high for the first time on unused drugs they find in medicine cabinets at home or at their grandparents’ homes. There are also incidents of accidental ingestion of these medications by children, the elderly, and pets. The medications will subsequently be disposed of using the protocols followed for disposing of drugs held in evidence. There is no charge for this service.

The Masters Tournament, commonly referred to as The Masters, is one of the most prestigious events in professional golf. The first of the sport’s four major tournaments to be played each year, the Masters is held every April at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Started by Augusta’s founders, investment banker Clifford Jones and legendary golfer Bobby Jones, the Masters is rife with tradition. Among the more notable traditions is the awarding of the green jacket to the tournament champion. The green jacket has been awarded to the tournament champion since 1949, and it remains one of the more recognizable awards or trophies in all of professional sports. Another tradition of the Masters is the Champions Dinner, which takes place the Tuesday before each tournament. Only past Masters champions and a select group of Augusta National board members are eligible to attend the dinner. Though the Masters is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, controversy surrounding Augusta National Golf Club arose in 2002 when Martha Burk, then the chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, accused the club of sexism due to the club’s refusal to offer membership to females. Though the Masters Tournament itself had little to do with the controversy, corporate sponsors shied away from the 2003 and 2004 tournaments, which were ultimately broadcast commercial-free. A decade after Burk’s protests began, the board at Augusta National finally offered membership to two women.

9 ways to improve your golf game Warmer weather sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between. â&#x20AC;˘ Choose the right clubs. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should influence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more confident in their abilities they can start to make their own choices. â&#x20AC;˘ Anchor your feet. Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed players will

keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance. â&#x20AC;˘ Identify your weaknesses. As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work. â&#x20AC;˘ Fix your alignment. Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance. â&#x20AC;˘ Use your torso for power. The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same

A good player knows how to make adjustments for the wind depending on the shot. Many players put so much emphasis on their backswings and putt shots that they fail to devote any practice to chips. All shots are important for golfers trying to shed strokes off of their scores. â&#x20AC;˘ Keep fit. Maintaining or improving your physical strength and overall health can help your golf game. Exercise and eat right, and you will have more endurance on the links.

WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. First, the new Town Square Wheaton location offers a cozier experience compared to the former digs. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

Benet retires jersey of Wisconsin standout Lisle Mayor Broda declares April 16 as Frank Kaminsky Day

A week and a half after leading the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team to its first National Championship game in 74 years, the 7-footer returned home Thursday for Frank Kaminsky Day and a jersey retirement ceremony at his high school alma mater, Benet Academy. In front of a packed gym of friends, family, students, teachers and local officials, the 22-year-old Kaminsky took the stage, accepting a framed Benet No. 44 jersey and taking the opportunity to share a personal message of perseverance. “People who are great are the people who are good at failing,” he said to the crowd. “I’m proud to say that I’m one of the best failures of all time.” Kaminsky, who was seldom recruited as a high school basketball player, recalled one of his first practices as a freshman on the University of Wisconsin team. Frustrated by his performance, he approached Badgers’ coach Bo Ryan. “He looked me in the eye and said, ‘Get out of my gym,’” Kaminsky said. “He said, ‘Get out of my gym and walk back in with a smile on your face because that’s how you’re going to attack every single day.’” The pep talk gave Kaminsky a new

perspective on basketball, academics and life. “You’ve got to have a smile on your face. You’ve got to be excited to do things,” Kaminsky said. “And that’s how I attacked every single day at Wisconsin.” Those who know Kaminsky remember him in a similar light. Corky Fennell was his kindergarten teacher when Kaminsky was at Lisle’s St. Joan of Arc School. Not only was he the size of most third-graders, but he was always one of the most outgoing and personable children in class. “Even as a 5-year-old, he was a very bubbly and animated child,” Fennell said. “Watching him in the tournament the past two years was kind of emotional for me because I still see him as a little boy with perfect form knocking down shots from the free-throw line. “I think the exposure he’s received is really amazing because the nation has now gotten to know the kind, fun-

ny, outgoing person he truly is.” During Thursday’s hourlong ceremony, Benet Principal Steve Marth, boys basketball coach Gene Heidkamp and Athletic Director Gary Goforth were among those who lauded Kaminsky’s accomplishments. “We gather this afternoon to celebrate the fine gentleman that Frank has become, the values that he has embodied both on and off the court and the admirable way in which he has comported himself as a student-athlete,” Marth said. “He has remained true to the to his Benet roots.” Lisle Mayor Joe Broda also partook in the ceremonies, declaring April 16 Frank Kaminsky Day in the village. The local recognition is just one of the many honors bestowed upon Kaminsky in the past two months, including 2015 John P. Wooden Award, 2015 Naismith and Oscar Robertson trophies; 2015 Big Ten Player of the Year; and the 2015 AP, Sporting News,

Coaches’ Association and USA Today player of the year awards. His expanding trophy case is a testament to how far he has come as a basketball player. After barely playing in his first two seasons at Wisconsin, the Badgers’ center averaged 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a junior, helping the team advance to the Final Four. For an encore in his senior year, Kaminsky led the team with 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as Wisconsin advanced to the National Championship game where the fell to Duke. But even after the fame and fortune – Kaminsky is projected to be a midfirst-round pick at the NBA Draft on June 26 – he attests that being honored by his home town is just as important. “It’s weird to think about,” Kaminsky said of his new-found fame. “But it’s awesome to get this kind of reception here. There’s not much that you can say other than it’s awesome.”

Road-tested Mustangs girls soccer showing promise By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Mustangs have proven to be road warriors in the first half of the girls soccer season. Downers Grove South (5-3-1), which has not played a home game since a 4-1 victory against Lane Tech on March 25, has logged a lot of miles in the month of April, beginning with a 8-0 road win against conference opponent Addison Trail on April 7. “It’s been a long month, but the girls have handled it well and it has brought the team closer together,” DGS head

coach Chris Hernandez said. “We have played some tough competition and we have been in nearly every game.” Ava Porlier and Autumn Rasmussen each netted a pair in the West Suburban Gold opener against AT, and Hannah Rossi, Meghan Riordan, Lexi Dimovski and freshman Vaiva Markevicius added tallies as well. The Mustangs then dropped a pair of games at the always competitive Quad City Invite in Betterndorf, Iowa. The 1-0 loss to Ames High School on April 10 marked the Mustangs’ first defeat of the spring. In the second game, DGS took na-

tional power Dubuque-Hempstead into double overtime and then to penalty kicks before Dubuque won in the ninth round of PK’s to seal a 4-3 win. Riordan, Dimovski and Rasmussen scored goals for the Mustangs. “Playing elite teams like those we faced at the Quad City Invite makes you that much better and shows you what it takes to compete with those programs,” Hernandez said. After returning to the area, the Mustangs went on the road April 14 and defeated Bartlett thanks to goals from Miyax Leon, Dimovski and Rasmussen, who is leading the team in scoring

with eight goals and seven assists in nine games. “We have a lot of skilled players and standout athletes on this team,” Hernandez said. “But it’s no one person, it’s the collective unit of seniors that have picked this group up and demonstrated tremendous leadership this season.” Following a road loss to Batavia on Thursday, the Downers Grove South girls soccer team returned home for a conference game against Hinsdale South on Tuesday. The Mustangs will compete in the Naperville North invite this weekend, beginning with a game against Palatine on Thursday.

Part of a five-run inning, Hannah Mrazek laced a double that plated two and Katie Polaski and Zoe Varsbergs each had RBIs as the Trojans erased a 7-2 deficit and tied the game at seven. DGN took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Polaski crossed the plate following an error. Earlier in the week, Downers Grove North (7-2) beat Trinity 4-3 on April 14 and lost to Plainfield East 4-3 in eight innings Wednesday.

The Trojans dropped backto-back games during the weekend to West Suburban Silver foe Oak Park-River Forest. A matchup between the two top teams in conference, Downers Grove North fell to OPRF 12-3 on Friday before dropping the second game of the series 9-3 on Saturday.
