eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – An advocate for preserving the historic Edwards House has announced he will no longer be able to save it. Downers Grove resident John Tillotson and his wife made the decision Friday. One of the biggest factors was the timeline for crews to move forward on the condominium development that will be built on the property where the 1890s Queen Anne Victorian currently sits. Tillotson said the developers gave him a hard deadline of May 15 to have the house moved before crews started working. “That’s when it was pretty much over. We knew that was not possible,” he said. Tillotson tried to get the deadline extended or find a temporary place to keep the house – such as a parking lot – until the move could be done but was unable to do so. David Sosin, an attorney who represents the condo developers, said the

May 15 deadline was firm. “The reason is because there’s so much work to do and then it’s winter,” he said. Though the project is scheduled to take a year, Sosin said crews need to start in May to finish the structure’s exterior. During the winter, crews will work on the interior. Tillotson remained optimistic last week after the Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a height variance that would allow him to change his house at 743 Maple Ave. into an accessory structure. Tillotson’s plan involved moving the Edwards House from its existing property at 942 Maple Ave. to the lot at 743 Maple Ave. Finances were another reason, Til-
lotson said, the plan fell through. When he originally proposed moving the house, he wanted the Village Council to pay $133,000 to help cover the cost, with Tillotson paying for improvements to the home. The council rejected that plan, instead offering Tillotson a 10-year, interest-free loan of $123,560. “That was a major setback,” he said. Tillotson turned down the loan, calling it “financially unattractive.” For the next month, he approached different groups in Downers Grove to see if there were any that would help pay back the loan. He got no takers. “We didn’t have the ability to move forward on the project because we had declined the loan offer,” he said. In early April, Tillotson decided to accept the loan, although he still felt it was a bad deal for him financially. At the April 21 council meeting, commissioner Bob Barnett said it was “mind-boggling” the project fell apart. Though it had not officially been called

HOW DOES A TOOTH DECAY?
General information
Q: What gets a cavity started?
Downers Grove Suburban Life is published every Wednesday and delivered to homes by Shaw Media, 1101 W. 31st St., Suite 100, Downers Grove, IL 60515. Refund policy: Subscribers may cancel subscriptions within 45 days of first delivery. Refunds will be prorated. No refunds after 45 days. A: What starts a cavity is the repetition of a process that occurs in your mouth when sugars from the food and drink you consume interact with bacteria that live in the plaque on your teeth. That interaction produces acid, which begins a process called demineralization, the loss of calcium and phosphate from the tooth’s enamel. It usually starts in a spot not readily noticeable, like in a fissure. Eventually, over months and months, the affected patch of enamel collapses, leaving a hole, or cavity. Left untreated, the cavity will spread into the dentin, the softer, more sensitive part of the tooth under the enamel. If the excruciating pain hasn’t driven you to the dentist first, decay will eventually destroy the tooth.

One of the keys to preventing decay is the removal of plaque. Plaque is the filmy substance that’s on the teeth. The more it is allowed to build up, the greater the danger of decay. Brushing and flossing is so important because they are the most effective ways of eliminating plaque. Keeping sugar out of your diet is another key. Talk with your dentist about ways to cut down your risk of tooth decay.

How to use video effectively for local marketing SPONSORED BY
By J.Tom Shaw Video is a powerful marketing tool for small business. Thanks to high speed Internet, YouTube and Facebook, and the rise of mobile prevalence, more videos are viewed online than ever before. In the past, using video to reach an audience was an expensive proposition for many small businesses. Production costs and pricy broadcast advertising schedules were too expensive to run with adequate frequency. Fast-forward to today, and any business with a marketing plan can incorporate video affordably and effectively. Below are a few tips for how you can use video to drive traffic and grow your business: Video is an excellent component to a business website. When a potential customer is searching your website, offer a relevant, high quality video segment. Content can include benefits of your product or service, interviews with you or your team. Best of all, testimonials from actual satisfied customers can be just as effective as word of mouth advertising. Video is an effective way to improve
Search Engine Optimization (SEO). YouTube has dominated the video view field for several years now. Owned by Google, YouTube videos receive favorable search result status in Google searches. Your business can host your videos on YouTube, and link back to your website. You can also display the video on your website using a YouTube widget. In both cases, that linking will improve your chances of getting found by people searching for your product or service. Video rocks on social media. Facebook allows videos to auto play in the news feed. Experts have noted that video can outperform organic reach over text and photo content on Facebook. Social media video for business should be friendly, fun, and informal. Show you and your employees active in the community, having fun with customers, or demonstrating some helpful tips. For examples of these and many other videos, please visit www.ShawMediaDigital. com/video.

Downers Grove to highlight history during Founders Day By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Residents will have a chance to take a walk through history this weekend during the annual Founders Day celebration. Events will take place throughout Downers Grove to celebrate the founding of the village and the historic sites in town. Bruce Swanson, member of the Downers Grove Historical Society, said this is the third time for the event in modern times. The historical society hosted the event for a long time but went away for several years. “Everything is kind of historical,” Swanson said. “The reason we have it is to bring back the history of Downers Grove.” Last year, the event expanded to two days. Swanson said they may have to change the name to Founders Days. This weekend’s events start with a self-guided walk of historical spots in Downers Grove. The walk will go from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and starts at Fishel park, 1036 Grove St. The walk is sponsored by the Windy
City Walkers. There will be two lengths: 5K and 10K. Depending on the course chosen, walkers will go through Denburn Woods, the Maple Grove Forest Preserve, Sears Catalog homes and the Downers Grove Historical Museum. There also will be a family bike ride starting at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fishel Park. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and the ride starts at 10:30 a.m. The course is 8 miles. The bike ride will be another opportunity to tour historic sites in Downers Grove. The ride will go through Maple Grove and Gilbert Park, hitting sites such as Prince Pond, the Pierce Downer Well and others. The ride is sponsored by the Downers Grove Bicycle Club. Swanson said there will be two wild flower walks at Lyman Woods, 901 31st St. The walks will begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and cost $25 per person; children younger than 12 get in for free. A naturalist will lead to groups to explore the woods of the nature preserve. Swanson said this is the only event throughout the weekend that will cost to participate. The wild flower walk is

Continued from page 2 off at that point, Tillotson said the effort was in flux and the state of the project constantly changed over the last week. “I’m trying to figure out how we got to the point where we have a creative deal worked out on March 3 and … it’s accepted 35 days later
… and then within one week, all of a sudden, we don’t have time to figure this out. It’s really disappointing,” Barnett said. “Everybody I know – this council, this staff, residents, neighbors, friends – was hoping to find a way to save this house.” At the meeting, Mayor Martin Tully said as long as the house is standing, there is still an opportunity to save it.

RAIN BARREL SALE
NOW THROUGH MAY 13, 2015 The Village of Downers Grove and The Conservation Foundation are teaming up to offer rain barrels for sale. Orders will be accepted through May 13, 2015. Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams. The 55-gallon barrels are made from reused plastic and come equipped with a spigot, a screw off lid, a garden hose threaded overflow, and screen in the top to help keep out bugs and debris. To Place An Order • All orders will be handled by third party vendor, Upcycle Products. • Place your order online (link available at www.downers.us), and pay via credit card. • The cost per barrel is $60.00, plus sales tax. • For questions about the sale, contact Dan Carlsen at 630-434-6811. • Rain barrels will be distributed at the Public Works Open House: Friday, May, 15, 2015, 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Ave
FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available. Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees.
Stormwater Utility Incentive As part of the stormwater utility, the Village has an incentive program to encourage residents to install rain barrels on their property. Qualifying properties will be provided a one-time reduction of $25 per property, to be applied toward the stormwater utility portion of a customer's utility bill. Incentive applications are available online at www.downers.us and at Village Hall and Public Works facilities. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
OVERNIGHT PARKING Overnight parking on Village streets between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. is prohibited by Village ordinance. Residents with a need to park overnight on the street must obtain permission from the Police Department and should call the Village Operations Center (VOC) at 630-434-5600.
Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3. Podcast and live streaming coverage of Council meetings are also available at www.downers.us. Individuals with a disability requiring a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in any meeting should contact the ADA Coordinator at 630.434.5525, prior to the meeting. DISTRICT 99 BOARD OF EDUCTION | 4 THINGS TO KNOW
By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com
1. Superintendent search
The board has narrowed down the list of search firms it’s considering to
felt comfortable bringing them in for interviews. The board was considering three firms but ruled one out because they hadn’t worked with them before. “I know all the individuals of the three firms,” Superintendent Mark McDonald said. “I believe all of them are really good. It’s a matter of opinion who would work better with the board.”
In many ways, a monopoly on force is what this government is practicing – without popular consent by the residents. Project design by Christopher Burke Engineers has cost taxpayers $100,000, and that is before any construction is approved. The design work was approved six months before this village had any meeting with neighborhood homeowners.
Neither Village Council nor village management were present at the two community meetings, which the project manager would not tape for the record as many were unable to attend. This is an economic problem, this is a political problem, this is a moral problem. Clyde Estates is quiet and safe with wide lawns, mature trees with lots of
2. Tax rate reallocation
The board voted to reallocate its tax rate for the coming year. The district was informed it will receive about $72.3 million in property tax allocations from the county –
slightly less than the amount the board requested in its November tax levy. The board reallocated the taxes to make sure they didn’t exceed tax caps. District Controller Mark Staehlin said the board cut back additional funding to the district’s social security fund because there is a surplus in that fund. The reallocation plan does not involve cuts to proposed additions to education, maintenance or other funds. Staehlin said the district property tax increase will be 2.02 percent. There is a 1.5 percent increase on existing taxes
See DISTRICT 99, page 20
LETTERS A monopoly on force
To the editor: Government has the ultimate power: a monopoly on force. Who or what makes it so imperative at this time for a 63-year-old country neighborhood in Downers Grove to require permanent road closures, ditches in our front yards and the loss of at least 15 trees?

District 58 honors its exceptional staff Springtime signals a celebratory time as we not only recognize our new graduates and retirees, but also honor our District 58 employees who truly exceeded expectations. For example, the Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 recently invited the community to nominate outstanding District 58 emCOMMUNITY ployees for a Distinguished Service Award. Through a VOICE blind review process, the Megan foundation annually selects Hewitt two employees to receive this prestigious award. The foundation hosted its annual awards ceremony Tuesday night, during which it honored 24 award nominees and proudly announced Jason Lynde, El Sierra School principal, and Andrew Kupisch, Henry Puffer School third-grade teacher, as its 2015 Distinguished Service Award recipients. Lynde received several nominations this year, many from families enrolled in the district’s new biliteracy program, which is housed at El Sierra. These nominations praised Lynde for his leadership and commitment to making the program robust for students, staff and parents alike. Kupisch won the Distinguished Service Award for his persistence, kindness and dedication, as noted in the six nominations he received from parents and students. The Downers Grove Elementary Education Association also hosts a staff recognition program, called Celebrate 58. This year, the association named O’Neill Middle School LRC Director Tasha Squires as the Teacher of the Year. Squires will be honored during the Celebrate 58 reception May 1, along with the other Teacher of the Year nominees and this year’s retirees. It’s been an incredible year for Squires. Last spring, she launched a highly creative student reading program called Conquest of the Realm. The program improved O’Neill’s voluntary reading participation rate from 17 percent to an incredible 80 percent. This year, Squires created a video describing the program’s impact and entered it into the Follett Challenge, a national competition. Follett named her video a finalist and awarded O’Neill with $30,000. Her video is still in the running for the grand prize – another $30,000. Congratulations to Jason Lynde, Andrew Kupisch and Tasha Squires. Thank you for your commitment. In next month’s column, District 58 will recognize another set of outstanding employees – our 2015 retirees.

Kathy and Tom Liss receive the Carol and Jack Sanicki Crystal Heart Award for their work with Easter Seals.
Kathy and Tom Liss of Downers Grove probably never imagine they’d be winning awards for their work when they first became involved with Easter Seals in 1983. Their link to the organization began because of their daughter Amy’s cerebral palsy and the group’s work providing services to those with disabilities. Decades later, their association continues and the couple was recognized with the Carol and Jack Sanicki Crystal Heart Award at a gala event in Chicago. Sounds like a well-deserved recognition. Is it any surprise at this point there’s more bad news coming out of the College of DuPage? Now the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued three subpoenas for documents, video and audio. A subpoena is far from proof of an actual malfeasance, but if there has been any going on, we hope this will shed some light. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

Going to miss Amnesty Day
Well, I’m sure going to miss Amnesty Day this spring. I called the township of Downers Grove and I was told we’re not having an Amnesty Day in spring or the fall and that we won’t get an Amnesty Day maybe until after March 2016 – there was going to be some kind of contract vote. So anyway, I’m going to miss that and I’m sure a lot of people in Downers Grove are too.
Clyde Estates concerns
Why is there no fire exit?
I took my kid to the Downers Grove library last week for a story time and I noticed that even though there’s a fire exit on the outside of the building, there isn’t one inside on the kids story room, and I was wondering why this happened with all the money we just spent on a remodel of that place.

Turnout too low in local elections Lake County local elections were two weeks ago and the turnout was a dismal 11.25 percent. Everyone complains about taxes and government and only slightly more than one out of 10 people vote? No wonder the politicians don’t give a hoot.

Stop marijuana arrests in DuPage
I wish that the DuPage law enforcement agencies would stop arresting people for marijuana possession, especially when the people they are arresting are older than 21 years old. It’s frustrating to see it in the newspaper and online that people are being arrested for this drug that is not harming anyone and is now legal in four states in the country. I’m sure the law enforcement agencies in DuPage could use their resources to fight real crime in this county.

The Christopher Burke design firm, not the low bidder, was given the contract for Clyde Estates. This design cost village taxpayers $100,000 before any neighborhood meeting was held. Two-thirds of the Clyde homeowners were unable to attend a 6:30 p.m. meeting on a work night in August or in November. [The] village would not comply with resident requests to record the meetings or hold [a] meeting on Saturday to accommodate more homeowners. Will the new council listen to residents regarding their own neighborhood issues?

To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. This isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s about rethinking a system to be in line with today’s expectations on education. So before you cast judgment on dual income families (because that’s what you’re doing, under the guise of a debate about full-day kindergarten), take a look at the bigger picture beyond Downers Grove. There is a whole world out there and I for one would like my children to learn about it – taught by trained educators, not baby sitters.

By Rita Walker Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a
phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

100 Women Who Care
Downers Grove Celebrates 3rd Anniversary of philanthropic support to local organizations 100 Woman Who Care Downers Grove (100WWC-DG) will celebrate its 3rd anniversary when its members gather on Wednesday, May 6th, 6:30pm at Emmett’s Restaurant in Downers Grove for their quarterly meeting. Newcomers are welcomed to join us to learn more about 100 WWC - DG. 100WWC – DG is a small but growing group of women who in the past 3 years have donated over $33,000 (in aggregate) to the following charities: Almost Home Kids, Bridge Communities, Family Shelter Services, PADS, J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation (DGN), Positively Parenting; PAD (Special project); Ride Janie Ride, SEASPAR (music program); Van Houtan Family (via the Grove Foundation), HGNA, and Abide in Me. 100WWC-DG is modeled after a similarly named group based out of Jackson MI and started by Karen Dunigan as a brilliantly simple way to raise money efficiently and quickly for local charities. The premise is that a group of women gather once a quarter to choose a worthy charity to support and, on the spot, write a check for $100, thus giving the chosen charity an immediate and unexpected gift. Each individual’s check is written directly to the charity chosen and aggregated so that the impact of all the checks is felt. Meetings take less than 30 minutes and there are no requirement for membership, other than to come together once a quarter. Unlike more formal organizations, our group has no annual membership fee, no required committee meetings or other time-consuming efforts associated with fundraising. 100WWC – DG is co-organized by Joanne Walthius and Sharon Sartori. Please check us out at www.100womenwhocaredownersgrove.com for more details and please consider joining the Downers Grove women who already belong to 100 Women Who Care – Downers Grove. We hope to see at our meeting on Wednesday May 6th, 6:30pm at Emmett’s Restaurant.

3. Water main replacement
The board approved hiring Yorkville company Kendall Excavating to replace a water main at Downers Grove South High School. Director of Operations Jim Kolodziej said the water main runs south from 63rd Street to the school building. “About a year ago, we experienced a split near the building,” he said. “When we dug it up, we realized that
this line has deteriorated.” Kendall Excavating was the low bidder at $68,865. Kolodziej said that’s less than the amount the district budgeted for repairs. The other two bids were $82,616 from Hoppy’s Landscaping of Lockport and $97,640 from Unique Plumbing of Brookfield.
4. Textbooks approved
The board greenlighted three new textbooks for the 2015-16 school year. Gina Ziccardi, assistant superintendent of student learning, said the classes getting the books are Math 3, Spanish 1 and Multicultural Studies in American Society. The board posted information about the books but received no public input before the vote.

sponsored by the Grove Foundation. Saturday’s activities also will include a Country in the Park at the Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave. The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. The Country in the Park will include animals, blacksmith demonstrations and yard games, according to Ashlee Grude, museum supervisor. The event also will have butter making in the Victorian House, a coloring exhibit in the annex building and a scavenger hunt. Grude said this event has grown over the years. “Last year we had right around 600 people come out over the four hours,” she said. Sunday will conclude the activities with a celebration of one of the founders of Downers Grove. Swanson said they honor a different founder each year. This year, they will honor Samuel Curtiss, a tavern owner who fought in the War of 1812 and helped with the Underground Railroad. There will be a program honoring Curtiss at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Downers Grove Public Library, 1050 Curtiss St. There also will be a plaque dedicated to Curtiss at 2 p.m. at the Main Street Cemetery. Swanson said the event has grown every year, and he hopes that trend continues. “If we can get some warm and good weather, it should be a good community event,” he said. The Founders Day events were supposed to kick off April 25 with the Pine Hollow Open Golf Tournament, but Swanson said it was postponed because of rain. The event will now be hosted at 11 a.m. May 23 at the Downers Grove Golf Club, 2420 Haddow Ave. To register, call the club at 630-963-1306.

was released by Chalupny and did well to release a right-footed effort that seemed destined for the back of the net until it was tipped wide by Angerer’s ďŹ ngertips. Instead of celebrating a third Chicago tally, the fans at Benedictine University saw their team’s lead cut in half just before the half-hour mark. Allie Long found Sinclair at the top of the penalty box and the Canada striker hit a low shot that found its way through trafďŹ c and inside the left post for a clinic in precision goal-scoring. Portland nearly leveled the match four minutes from the break, LeBlanc rushing off her line and coming up with a stunning block to deny Sinclair’s toe-poke from close range. Thorns FC ďŹ nally tied things up in the opening stages of the second period, as Shim pounced on a partial clearance by taking a touch at the edge of the box and picking out the inside of the far post with a well-placed left-footed blast. The Red Stars were fortunate not to concede another goal when Sinclair subsequently found Comeau unmarked inside the penalty area and the midďŹ elder send a mishit effort well over the frame. The visitors got even closer to the go-ahead tally in the 74th minute, substitute Kendall Johnson feeding Sinead Farrell, whose excellent chipped attempt bounced off the underside off the crossbar and came within inches of crossing the line. Chicago defender and New Zealand captain Abby Erceg had the game’s ďŹ nal quality chance when she beat several defenders to ball on DiBernardo free-kick from midďŹ eld, only to see the dangerous header parried by Angerer. The Chicago Red Stars look to stay undefeated on the season when they host American legend Christie Rampone and Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 2. Chicago, Illinois – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Women’s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midďŹ elder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old ďŹ red at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the day’s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. The Red Stars nearly found the net at the other end in the 15th minute, rookie Danielle Colaprico swinging in a corner kick from the left that was nodded just over the frame by legendary U.S. midďŹ elder Shannon Boxx. Three minutes later, Press thought she had a hat trick when she

DOWNERS GROVE – Megan Ramsden gave the Trojans a much-needed boost Monday as the team notched its first West Suburban Silver win of the season. The senior pitcher was lights out against Glenbard West, going the distance and striking out seven batters during a 2-1 Downers Grove North victory. Ramsden’s performance not only got the Trojans in the conference win column, she also helped the team earn a victory as they embark on of the busiest stretches of the schedule. “This is our first of five games in eight days, so it feels good to get that first win,” Ramsden said. “The defense was sensational tonight; it’s a huge confidence boost when you know that your teammates can rob a hit when the ball is put in play. “On my end, I just wanted to come out and set a good tone and pace. They were able to get to me early for a run, but then I settled down and felt really confident from the pitching circle.” The Hilltoppers got on the board first in the top of the second, manufacturing one run on back-to-back singles after a runner reached on a dropped third strike. But the Trojans countered in the bottom half of the inning when Kayelee Newstrom led off with single then swiped second base. Raemon Meents followed suit with a single, advancing Newstrom to third. Newstrom then scored on a double steal in which both runners were ruled safe. Ramsden was electric from the pitching circle in the following three innings, retiring eight of the nine batters she faced and keeping the game tied at one when the Trojans came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Game breakdown Downers Grove North 2, Glenbard West 1 DGN LEADER n Megan Ramsden: 6 IP, R, 5 H, 7 SO “Megan was terrific in the middle half of the game” Downers Grove North head coach Eric Landschoot said. “That’s why she is one of the leaders of this team. She’s a senior and she’s been in this situation before. She went out there and led by example and it was nice to see the offense pick her up late in the game.” Emma Varsbergs began the bottom of the fifth with a single and advanced to third when shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis roped a one-out double. A Newstrom sacrifice fly then drove in Varsbergs for the goahead run. After retiring the side in order in the top of the sixth, Ramsden came out to close the game in the seventh. Although the leadoff batter reached on a single, Ramsden recorded the next three outs in succession to wrap up the win. “Credit the Glenbard West pitcher and defense, they really limited us on offense today,” Landschoot said. “But Megan was up to the challenge. It was a quality win for both her and the team. “This was an important victory because it was our first conference win and it gets us off on the right foot before a hectic part of the schedule.” The Trojans faced Benet Academy on Tuesday and continue West Suburban Silver play against Hinsdale Central at 4:30 today. The girls face Glenbard East tomorrow and have the weekend off before three straight games against conference opponents begins with a Monday matchup at Proviso West.

The Trojans extended their winning streak to five games with victories against York and Morton. On April 21, Downers Grove North (8-3) defeated York 1-0 in a shootout. Following two scoreless halves and a pair of overtime periods, the West Suburban Silver matchup went to PKs, and DGN prevailed 4-3 as goalkeeper Grace Stevenson stymied two York shooters. The Trojans then notched their fifth straight win with a 2-0 shutout against Morton on Thursday. DGN opened the scoring at the 22 minute mark when senior forward Jessica Ridderhoff’s hard shot from a tight angle bounced away from the Mustang keeper to a charging Alexandra Cittadine, who buried the shot inside the far post. Downers Grove North freshman Chloe Nowka converted a penalty shot in the second half, and the girls held on for a shutout victory. It was the Trojan’s fourth game in a row without yielding a goal and their eighth overall shutout of the season. The team faced Lyons Township on Tuesday and next travels to Proviso West for a game at 4:30 Thursday.
Why Ramsden was selected: Megan Ramsden struck out seven batters and yielded five hits and one run during a complete-game effort Monday as the Trojans defeated Glenbard West 2-1. Megan Ramsden brought her best stuff to the pitching circle Monday, powering Downers Grove North softball team to its first conference win of the season. The Trojan ace fanned seven Hilltoppers and went the distance as the girls improved to 1-2 in West Suburban Silver play. Ramsden, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the victory.
Soulier: You pitched out of a few tight spots in the first couple innings then got in a groove in the second half of the game. How were you feeling in the pitching circle? Ramsden: I know that my
teammates are there to back me up, so I always have a lot more confidence knowing that if a batter does make contact, someone will make a play in
the field. Today they made some great plays in the field, I was then able to settle down and get some strikeouts and we got the win.
Soulier: What is your biggest strength as a pitcher? Ramsden: I think I am pretty
composed and strong mentally. So whenever something goes wrong, I am able to take a step back, relax and don’t let it get to me because I always know that there is another pitch to throw and it’s not the end of the world.
Soulier: The team is 10-4 through 14 games. Are you satisfied with where you stand? Ramsden: There is always
room to improve, but I think we are playing really well right now. We have a couple good wins against solid competition, and I think that will help us a lot as the season progresses.

NAPERVILLE – Downers Grove South’s girls soccer team was unable to earn a berth in the quarterfinals of the Naperville Invitational, although it wasn’t for lack of trying. After beating Palatine 3-1 on Thursday in the opening game of what is considered the toughest regular-season tournament in Illinois, the Mustangs fell 2-0 against host Naperville Central on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Naperville Central then beat Palatine on Saturday to win the group, dropping Downers Grove South to the consolation bracket. “We definitely came out flat,” Downers Grove South coach Chris Hernandez said. “Whether it’s fatigue or mental issues, this was a flat performance for us, which is too bad.” The loss came despite a terrific performance from senior goalkeeper Meghan Diddia, who was outstanding and made 13 saves while the Mustangs (7-4-1) were outshot 21-5. Neither Naperville Central goal could be blamed on Diddia. On the first one, she made a diving save on an open shot by Kayla Burke, only to see Kirsten Dorgan score on the rebound with 13:58 left in
the first half. The Redhawks (9-4-1) made it 2-0 at the 31:20 mark of the second half when Meredith Tunney headed home a corner kick from Taylor Stenmark. They could have easily had five or six more goals if not for Diddia. “She’s really been stepping up these last few weeks,” Hernandez said. “We challenge her at practice to improve herself to be a more of a well-rounded goalkeeper and we’re starting to see the effects of that. She’s been outstanding.” Diddia got the win against Palatine, which controlled the majority of the play against the Mustangs. Ava Porlier scored twice on free kicks and Alexa Dimovski tallied off an assist from Meghan Riordan for the Mustangs, who could not sustain that performance against the Redhawks. “I think a lot of us were tired and I just think more of us need to be coming to the ball with more effort,” Diddia said. “All that matters is that we take this loss and we turn it into motivation to do better because I think it is obvious that we can play well.” DGS faced Morton on Tuesday and continues play at the Naperville Invitational against Conant at 5 p.m. Thursday at Fremd High School.

Undefeated Mustangs firing on all cylinders
BASEBALL ROUNDUP
By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The pitching has been nearly perfect this season for the Downers Grove South softball team. Behind two of the most dominant hurlers in the area, junior lefty Caroline Hedgcock and sophomore righthander Payton Buresch, the Mustangs are off to a 16-0 start, including a 4-0 record in West Suburban Gold play. “I think we are playing with a lot of confidence this season, but we are trying not to get ahead of ourselves and approach every game with the same intensity and preparation,” Buresch said. “We are playing really well as a team right now, our offense, defense and pitching is all clicking.” The cohesion has led to a handful of dominant performances in the first half of the softball season. The Mustangs have shut out their last four opponents, most recently defeating Hinsdale South 11-0 on Friday. Additionally, the offense has put up 10 or more runs in 11 games this spring, eclipsing the 20-run mark twice and adding one 19-run game for good measure. “We [the pitching staff] are only as good as our defense and offense is,” Hedgcock said. “There’s a tremendous amount of veteran leadership on this team, with Kristin Lea, Kristen Bialek, Rebekah Ondracek, Megan LoBianco, Zahrya McFarland and Nicole Bowman. They’ve been really solid this year in the field and given us a lot of run support.” Hedgcock, a Maryland University recruit, has held up her end of the bargain, too, opening the season with three straight one-hitters before tossing a five-inning perfect game April 13 against Hinsdale Central. Buresch, a James Madison recruit, has yet to lose a game in her high school career, going 15-0 as a freshman and a perfect 7-0 this season. Additionally, Morgan Meyer got her first career varsity win April 22 against Proviso East, fanning out 11 batters and surrendering just one hit as the Mustangs won 16-0 in five innings. “Pitching is definitely our strength,” DGS head coach Ron Havelka said. “Caroline and Payton complement each other very well – Caroline is a lefty and Payton is right-handed and they both have multiple pitches that can finish batters. “But as the season progresses, we are going to face teams that can score

Game breakdown Downers Grove South 11, Hinsdale South 0 DGS LEADERS n Caroline Hedgcock: 5 IP, 1 H, 11 SO n Kristin Lea: 2 for 3, 3 RBIs n Payton Buresch: 3 for 3 on us. It’s inevitable. Our defense and hitting need to be up to the challenge. So far, I’m very happy with our play, we are playing really good team ball.” In Friday’s conference game against Hinsdale South, Lea led the way, going 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs as the Mustangs won 11-0 in five innings. Bialek also went 2 for 3 from the plate while Buresch was 3 for 3 and Hedgcock earned the victory, going the distance and allowing just one hit and striking out 11 batters. DGS faced Addison Trail on Tuesday and will host Willowbrook at 4:30 p.m. today.
After their winning streak was snapped at 10 games by Lyons Township, the Mustangs rebounded with a resounding win against conference foe Leyden to improve to 7-0 in the West Suburban Gold. Downers Grove South (12-3) tallied six runs in the third inning Monday against Leyden while Peter Hamot struck out six batters in five innings and the Mustangs won 7-3. Joe LaCivita went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run, and Robert Justus, Tom Steinhaus, Jack Villa, Zach Radde, Ryan Taylor and Danny Oriente all had one RBI apiece. Previously, DGS lost to Lyons Township 5-4 on Thursday. Radde went 3 for 4 at the plate driving in one and scoring a run. DGS played the second of three games against Leyden on Tuesday and complete the set at 4:30 p.m. today.
BASEBALL
Downers Grove North
Following a sweep by conference power Oak Park-River Forest, the Trojans bounced back by winning two of their next three games. Pitcher Ryan Cantlin struck out seven batters and surrendered just five hits during a complete-game shutout Monday against York. Myles Farley and Dallton Baran each had an RBI in the third inning as the Trojans defeated their West Suburban Silver foe 2-0. It was a stark turnaround from
Friday’s game between the two teams in which Downers Grove North (15-6) manufactured only five hits and lost 2-0. Catcher Brendan Shanahan was 2 for 4 and Nic Laio took the hard-luck loss, allowing two hits and two runs in six innings of work. Before the series against York, DGN throttled Addison Trail 13-4 Thursday. The Trojans scored nine runs in the first three innings and Ryan Andrews got it done on the bump, striking out four and spreading out four runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. Jake Stevenson was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs, Farley was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and Paul Cappetta, Ben Margo and Luke Goergem had two RBIs each. The Trojans wrapped up the threegame set with York on Tuesday and next play the Crosstown Classic against Downers Grove South at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at South.
Benet
Benet broke out the bats Thursday in a 14-8 win against Hinsdale Central. Dan Sobolewski led the way, going 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs while Mike Ryan was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Brian DuSatko, Josh Tumpane and Jon Kruppe each had an RBI. The Redwings (11-6) could not sustain the momentum Monday, falling 4-3 in a conference game against Nazareth. After a Tuesday matchup with Carmel, Benet faces Nazareth again at 4:30 p.m. today.
