DOWNERS GROVE – Action could be taken to save the historic Edwards House depending on the outcome of Tuesday’s election. John Tillotson, a Downers Grove resident who has been advocating to save the house, said he’s in a “holding pattern” until after the election to see if the village will help move the house. The historic house’s future has been in jeopardy since developers filed paperwork with the village to build a condo complex on its current site. Several advocates have come forward to work with the village and de-
velopers to save the house. Tillotson has been working with the village for months to iron out terms of an agreement that would move the Edwards House from 942 Maple Ave. to a property he owns at 743 Maple Ave. Tillotson had requested the village pay $133,000 to cover the cost associated with moving the Edwards House. Instead, the village approved giving Tillotson a loan for the money, which would be interest-free over the 10-year life of the loan. “It’s pretty unattractive financially,” Tillotson said. “We’re going into the red on this.” Based on the outcome of the election, Tillotson may reintroduce his proposal to the new council members
to see if it would get approval. “We believe that there is support for the original request,” he said. In the meantime, Tillotson is preparing the 743 Maple Ave. property for the potential move. According to village documents, Tillotson had requested the Zoning Board of Appeals grant him a height exception on the 743 Maple Ave. property. That, according to Kelley Chrisse, a planner with the village, would classify the existing house as an “accessory structure.” “This proposal is for repurposing the existing structure as a garage,” Chrisse said.

MOUTH RINSES Q: Do mouth rinses really have any value in dental hygiene? How should they be used? A: An oral rinse is no substitute for regular brushing and flossing, but it certainly should have a place in your home oral care regimen. In fact, while the feeling of a fresh mouth and breath is good, one danger of using an over-the-counter mouth rinse is that the fresh feeling it creates may cover up an unpleasant taste or odor that is the first tell-tale sign of a problem like gum disease. A number of mouth rinses have been recognized by the ADA as effective in helping prevent a build-up of plaque above the gum line when used as directed. Many have been awarded the American Dental Association Seal of Approval. If you are a regular mouth rinse user, dentists suggest that you brush and floss immediately before rinsing. A mouth rinse is most effective on clean teeth. There are also prescription mouth rinses that are effective for dealing with specific types of problems. Because children tend to accidentally swallow mouth rinse, they should use it only under adult supervision. Check with your dentist to make sure you’re using your mouth rinse properly.

Kailee Miller is remembered as ‘always smiling,’ fearless on soccer field By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Whether Kailee Miller was playing soccer or on the sidelines, coach Mike Adams saw a consistent trait. “Both on and off the field, she was one of those kids who loved having fun,” Adams said. “Always smiling.” Adams, who coached Miller for nine years on the Woodridge Storm traveling soccer club, said she was “talented, quick and fast” on the field and “goofy” on the sidelines, always making people laugh. Miller, 18, died March 30. Miller played two seasons on the varsity soccer team at Downers Grove South High School, where she was a senior. Adams said she had a passion for soccer, a love she shared with her grandfather. She played every position on the field with the traveling team, but she mostly played as a defender. “She was a fearless defender,”

Adams said. “She would go through a brick wall to be a high competitor and get a ball. She would do anything to win a game.” The Storm’s season ended in the fall. It was the last for many of the players, who Adams said will leave for college in the coming months. Adams said Miller was a good role model on the team who led by example. Jill Browning, director of communications for Community School District 99, said the district is “heartbroken” over the loss. “Kailee was an honor roll student, a member of the varsity soccer team and was well-liked by her classmates,” Browning said in a statement. “Our entire community grieves for the Miller family and their loss.” South Principal Edward Schwartz said counselors were made available for Miller’s teammates, teachers and any spring sports athletes at the school. Classes were not in session last week be-

cause of spring break. Schwartz said a support system was put in place for the students when they returned to school Tuesday. “It’s tragic whenever we have a child die,” he said. “It’s not the natural way of life.” For Adams, it’s tough to pick a favorite memory of Miller – there’s too many to choose from. He said he’ll always remember her personality. “We made it fun,” he said. “There was never a dull moment with Kailee.” She is survived by her parents, Karen and Greg Miller, and three brothers, Michael, Mark and Danny Miller, according to an obituary from Modell Funeral Home in Darien. Services were held Saturday. The family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for charities in Miller’s name. As of Tuesday morning, it had raised nearly $10,000. The Downers Grove South High School student who died last week jumped from a moving vehicle two days before her death, according to police reports. Kailee Miller, 18, of Downers Grove died March 30, a spokeswoman for the DuPage County Coroner’s office said. An official cause of death has yet to be determined. According to a report from the Woodridge Police Department, Miller was at a party March 28 and had been drinking alcohol. She and two other people – who police said had not been drinking – left the party and were driving about 10 p.m. in the 8000 block of Janes Avenue, the report stated. Miller said she was going to jump out of the vehicle, according to the report. The car was moving about 25 mph when she jumped from the rear passenger door. When police arrived at the scene, Miller was lying on the parkway, the report stated, and her breathing was shallow and abnormal. She was transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment, according to the report.

Author Festival returning to D-58 By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com
SEALANTS Q: What is a sealant? A: A sealant is a plastic material a dentist applies to the chewing surfaces of the permanent back teeth – the molars – to prevent cavities. Those teeth, which are designed for crushing and chewing, have an uneven terrain full of pits and fissures. They’re good for what they do, but are susceptible to cavities. In a painless procedure, the dentist will thoroughly dry the teeth, then apply a layer of acid liquid that will etch the teeth’s surfaces slightly. Over that he will apply the liquid plastic that will seep into the depressions of the teeth and harden. The protective coating keeps out the plaque and acid that cause decay. Sealants are used most effectively with children who have newly formed permanent teeth. A person who has not developed cavities in the pits and fissures of molars by his or her late teens or early 20s is not likely to get them later. The American Dental Association says sealants are virtually 100 percent effective in preventing tooth decay where they are applied. Considering the cost of filling and repairing decayed teeth, an investment in sealants is also economical. Nevertheless, as effective as they are, sealants are no substitute for regular visits to the dentist for twice-a-year cleaning and examination. Talk with your dentist about the value of a sealant.

away about what happens, but according to a synopsis on the Food Network’s website, this is the first time in the show’s history it has taken on a grocery store and restaurant in the same episode. According to the synopsis, “the debts and the stakes are climbing sky high” at Lemon Tree and Zest, when “Restaurant: Impossible” executes a renovation to reorganize the grocery section and make the bistro warm and welcoming. Black admitted Lemon Tree has had some problems and was not embarrassed to ask for help. The whole experience, he said, renewed Black’s and co-owner Tim Canning’s faith in themselves. “It was a very emotional experience from beginning to end. There was quite a few lows and certainly a few highs,” Black said, adding that the highs definitely outweighed the lows. Black hopes residents realize Lemon Tree’s ownership is serious about the community and see how important this process was for the business. The changes have already been made to the market and bistro. Black said the work volunteers put into the renovation was “remarkable.” “It looks a lot different,” he said. “It looks great.” Black said Irvine came into the filming with a lot of energy and was fun to work with. “Robert is an awesome individual,” Black said. “He doesn’t mince his words. He tells you what’s on his mind.” Black said the cast and crew were all terrific and that it wasn’t just about making a television show. “You can tell they really get a great satisfaction from helping business owners that need their assistance,” he said.

Continued from page 6 “The goal is to encourage children to take interest in writing and get better connected with some of their favorite authors,” Hewitt said. The event will culminate with a book signing from 7 to 8 p.m. April 17 at the Downers Grove Public Library. The signing was originally going to take place at Anderson’s Bookshop downtown, Hewitt said, but has been moved. Hewitt said she hopes this event not only interests kids in writing, but also in reading more. “There’s something about meeting the author and hearing their favorite stories,” she said. This is the 20th year the program has been in place. Schmurr said this is a great event for kids and parents. “Everybody who sees it and hears about it thinks it’s great,” she said.

Generous neighbors OUR VIEW provide 40 years of State senators seeing signs hope, opportunity of hope in Springfield This year, People’s Resource Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary. We also are celebrating another major milestone – our new building at 104 Chestnut Ave. in Westmont is now open. I wish to thank the many generous neighbors whose donations have made it possible for us to open this second location for providCOMMUNITY ing food, clothing, educational programs and much VOICE more for DuPage residents Kim who are struggling with Perez poverty. We continue to seek donations to support the new center – visit www.peoplesrc.org/homeforgood if you’d like to help. Since 1975, we’ve been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County. That first year, 40 volunteers started People’s Resource Center in the basement of a small house. They organized their friends and family to donate bags of groceries, and fed 125 hungry families. Last year, more than 2,000 volunteers served in PRC’s two centers in Wheaton and Westmont as well as more than 30 community partner locations across DuPage County. We distributed more than 2.6 million pounds of food. We provided more than 25,500 hours of educational opportunities that empower people to find work and develop the skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency. We helped more than 9,000 families. All the while, we’ve remained grounded in grassroots community support. PRC’s founders envisioned doing so much more for the community than just sharing food with the hungry, as important as that is. They wanted to help people overcome the isolating experience of being poor in the suburbs. They sought to build a community that could transcend the socioeconomic differences that so often divide us. During 40 years of People’s Resource Center history, that vision has become a reality. We are so grateful for the generous neighbors whose donations and volunteer work make it all possible. Every day, people from all walks of life are finding new hope and opportunity. Check out www.peoplesrc. org/homeforgood to find information about tours – I welcome you to come visit our new building in Westmont and see for yourself.
To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between
the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

College of dysfunction?
Who is watching out for students, faculty and staff at the College of DuPage? Kathy Hamilton appears to be the only board member that cares! Now we have yet another scandal. It appears as though the Foundation Board that is supposed to be raising private funding for the college is only raising the funding for their own pockets. … Talk about a conflict of interest! This is all from the president on down to the radio station and the board members – power gone bad!
Woodridge parking problem
The post office in Woodridge needs more parking. On any given day, the employees are parked in the front area closest to the door and people have to carry their packages far because the employees are taking up the parking. I realize they don’t have enough parking; they need to add more parking. … Next to the post office is the police station parking. They need to add a few spots there so the [post office] employees have somewhere to park so customers have somewhere closer to park.

By Gina Kraman We do it for airline seats, cell phone plans, and dishwashers. Why not for something as important as hearing? Upgrades move us up -- replacing the old with a newer version, which usually means better. Upgraded hearing aids help patients take advantage of new technological developments, with more features to enhance hearing. Hearing aids last between three to seven years, depending on use, care, and instrument quality. When wearers are ready for a new pair, or their old pair is not fixable, updated models are available. Sometimes patients opt to upgrade their hearing aids even when they’re working well, to take advantage of new enhancements. For example, in the past two years, hearing aid technology has advanced to help listeners better distinguish conversation from background noises. For some, this feature alone would merit a new pair, as conversations in crowded places would be enhanced.
as with a new job with more conference calls and meetings, better hearing aids may be necessary. Some “ear-to-ear” hearing aids even communicate with each other, to adjust automatically for difficult listening environments. Newer models are made to integrate with wireless technology devices, such as smart phones. Audio from phones or other devices can be streamed directly through the hearing aids. Upgraded hearing aids may compensate for hearing loss that has substantially declined after the original hearing aids were purchased. While audiologists can make device adjustments, sometimes the best solution is a new pair. However, for patients on a budget, replacing a pair of working hearing aids – which may cost hundreds of dollars – may not be an option. Audiologists strive to work with patients, their goals, and budgets to find satisfactory solutions.

According to village code, a garage must be no taller than 23 feet. When the 743 Maple Ave. property is removed from its foundation, it will be 26 feet, 10 inches tall. After getting the exception, the 743 Maple Ave. property would need a house on it. Chrisse said the plans submitted show the existing house being moved to the back of the property, and a new a house on the property. The Zoning Board of Appeals is the final decision-making body on the exception. If they approve it, Tillotson can request a permit through the village to move the 743 Maple Ave. property off its foundation to a new place on the lot. That meeting is scheduled April 22. Tillotson said he wants to move the 743 Maple Ave. property to the back of the lot and make it a garage regardless. “It would make room for the Edwards House, and that would be our first choice,” he said. If all sides could not come to an agreement, Tillotson said he would build a new house on the 743 Maple Ave. property.

Francesca’s Amici makes name for itself
Suburban Life Media photos
Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Tilapia paesana features plump, moist fish that’s delicately breaded and smothered with shredded leek, tomatoes, and cremini and shitake mushrooms with a touch of saffron, all in a subtle wine sauce. leek, tomatoes, and cremini and shiitake mushrooms with a touch of saffron, all in a terrific wine sauce. My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day. And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone
cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

DOWNERS GROVE – With handful of returning position players and both starting pitchers back from last season’s Mustangs squad that won a regional and advanced to a sectional final, spirits and expectations are high among the Downers Grove South softball team. “We have a lot of returners, including our two starting pitchers that helped us win 33 games last season, Caroline Hedgcock and Payton Buresch,” DGS head coach Ron Havelka said. “And with six position players back, we should be pretty solid defensively and have a well-rounded offense.” Downers Grove South packs an intimidating one-two punch from the pitching circle. Mustangs lefty ace Hedgcock, a University of Maryland commit, was an all-conference selection last season after posting an 18-3 record with a 1.62 ERA. Buresch also was stellar in her freshman campaign, going a perfect 15-0 with an ERA less than 1. DGS also has the gloves to back up their starters, as the team committed just 33 errors in 36 games last season. “Defense and pitching will be a strength for us again this season,” Havelka said. “But we can hit, too. The goal is to keep improving in all areas and play our best softball near the end of the season and in the playoffs.” Senior outfielder Zahrya McFarland will provide a big bat in the middle of the order after leading the team with a .393 batting average in 2014. Juniors Kristin Lea and Nicole Bowman also can do some damage out of the two and five holes, respectively, while leadoff slap hitter Kristen Bialek

Megan LoBianco will move from third base to shortstop this season and provide some pop in the bottom half of the order. Catcher Rebekah Ondracek is a fantastic defender and is looking to build off a breakout offensive season. The Mustangs are clicking in the early going of the 2015 season. SOFTBALL PREVIEW
Benet, DGN loaded with returning talent SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first pitch has been thrown for area high school softball teams, many of which had successful postseason runs last spring. Here’s how things are shaping up for local teams this year:

Outlook: In spite of graduating six seniors from last year’s squad, three who are now playing for collegiate programs, the 2015 Redwings softball team packs a formidable punch in the middle of their lineup. Illinois bound senior Stephanie Abello is one of the most dominating hitters in the area and will bat third for Benet this season. Last spring, the catcher batted .481, hit 22 home runs, recorded 63 RBIS and scored 48 runs. The most prolific hitter in program history, Abello has 52 homers for her career, and is two shy of the IHSA record. This season, she has five home runs in the Redwings’ first four games. “[Abello is] the most powerful hitter in Benet history,” head coach Jerry Schliff said. “Not only is she the best hitting catcher in the area, she is the best catcher; she picked off 15 runners last year and has picked off three this year.” It doesn’t get any easier for opposing pitchers who decide to intentionally walk Abello, as fellow senior slugger Emily York will bat cleanup after hitting .500 and belting 11 home runs last season. York, who signed to play softball at Florida Institute of Technology, also is an excellent defensive first baseman.
Outlook: Although the Trojans graduated four all-conference players from last season’s squad, a wealth of returning talent means the Trojans are still contenders to win a sixth straight West Suburban Silver championship. “Our goal every year is to win conference,” DGN coach Eric Landschoot said. “Our conference is much improved this year, there are a lot of good teams and coaches and there is not a whole lot of disparity between first and last place. “Our biggest strength is our cohesion. The girls have played together for a couple years now and they like playing with one another. They are smart hitters, smart softball players who know the situation. This is a very tight knit group and that will take us a long way.” This season’s Trojan team sports power up and down the lineup. University of Indianapolis commit Emma Varsbergs is back for her senior season and will play third base. The Trojan leader hit .322 as a junior and is the spark plug for the DGN offense. Additionally, Varsbergs younger sister, sophomore Zoe Varsbergs, returns as the team’s everyday first baseman. She batted .369 with 20 RBIs in her freshman season. Four-year varsity shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis is looking to build off a solid season in which she hit .358, while fellow middle infielder Polaski is Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com back in the fold after posting Downers Grove North shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis (right), backed by Kayelee Newstrom, catches a fly to a .324 average and scoring 24 runs. short center March 31 against Nazareth in La Grange Park. Freshman midfielder Chloe Nowka, who hustled and created havoc throughout the game, was rewarded for her hard work when she capped the scoring with 5:42 left, stealing the ball on the right wing and converting a breakaway. The Trojans also had three shots hit the post. “I think we’re working well together because the younger girls are definitely learning from the older girls that have been in the program,” Downers Grove North junior defender Alyse Dutcher said. “The younger girls are doing really well this year. They kind of look up to us and I like it.” Dutcher, a center back, has been the linchpin of a defen-
sive line that has combined with freshman goalie Grace Stevenson to post three shutouts. Stevenson had to make just two saves against the Warriors while her teammates took time to refine their skills. “In these types of games we like to work on how we move the ball throughout the field, so especially in the back, where I play, we like to switch the field, which we need to work on,” Dutcher said. “This is kind of a game where you can work on things you need to work on. We’ve improved a lot and I see us doing well in the future.” The Trojans travel to Riverside Brookfield on Friday before opening the prestigious Pepsi Challenge on Saturday against No. 6 seed Loyola.
Caroline Hedgcock is off to a torrid start to begin the spring softball season. The University of Maryland commit has dominated from the rubber thus far, giving up just three runs in her first four starts. Hedgcock, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the hot start and the high expectations heading into the season.

DOWNERS GROVE – With a roster that encompasses players with a wide range of skill sets and experience levels, the Downers Grove North soccer team needed a little time to jell. The Trojans have made great strides in the first three weeks of the season and have bounced back from two narrow losses to win their past two games, with the latest victory a 5-0 drubbing of Willowbrook Monday night at Carstens Field. “We had two tough losses against Lemont and Hinsdale Central,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “Both of them were pretty close and since we do have a blend of freshmen through seniors, I think it’s going to get better. We’ve already gotten so much better throughout the first five games and they really work well together.” Indeed, the Trojans (3-2) – who start four seniors, three freshmen, two juniors and two sophomores – have outscored their past two foes by an 11-0 margin, with a host of players contributing. Senior forwards Jessica Ridderhoff and Lexi Cittadine and sophomore forward Emily Redpath all scored within an eight-minute span early in the first half Monday against Willowbrook (1-6), which was overwhelmed from the start. Young and old shined again in the second half, with senior midfielder Ellena Metros scoring off a free kick from junior Arlinda Osmani
