eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The village has requested more information before it approves a demolition permit for the historic Edwards House. On Friday, the village sent condominium developer FFM-DG Development a three-page letter clarifying a need for approval of water disconnection, a $5,000 construction site management bond and permits for public sidewalk disturbance, among other items. Downers Grove Building Division Manager Alex Pellicano said the village asking for revisions on a demolition plan is not uncommon. “This is the standard procedure for any permit application,” he said. If everything is properly submitted,

the village could respond to the request within five business days. Pellicano said there is no deadline for submitting the revised plan, but if a developer doesn’t resubmit, it won’t be given a demolition permit. David Sosin, an attorney representing the developer, said a revised plan would be submitted to the village by end of the day Tuesday. The developer originally slated Friday as the start date for construction, and Sosin said it is still the targeted date. “This [process] is part of that May 15 date,” he said. Last week, Sosin said the developer was ready for demolition and awaiting permit approval. “The whole issue of clearing the property will start in sequence when

we have the permit in hand,” he said. The developer requested a permit for demolition of the 1890s Queen Anne Victorian home April 27, according to village Communications Director Doug Kozlowski. The village had 10 business days to answer the request and responded Friday – the 10th day. Community members tried for months to save the house. Downers Grove resident John Tillotson offered up his property for the home’s relocation, but recently pulled out of the effort, citing the tight deadline set by the developer. The village council offered Tillotson a 10-year, interest-free loan to cover the cost of the move. Tillotson originally turned down the deal, but later accepted it in April when he realized it was the only way to save the house.

IMPACTED FOOD PARTICLES Q: What’s the best way to handle a piece of food, like a piece of popcorn, that gets stuck between teeth? A: A piece of food stuck between your teeth is usually just an annoyance that you can dislodge with a little tongue ingenuity and effort. Dentists refer to this as an impacted piece of food. If the tongue won’t do the job, you may have to reach for the floss. One trick to give the floss a little more muscle is to tie a knot in it. You might also try the soft, pointed end of an interdental stimulator to dislodge the particle. There are some things to consider with impacted food particles: if the problem keeps occurring in the same spot in the mouth, it could be a sign of tooth decay, or of a rough spot or erosion on a restoration like a crown or filling. If you have a recurring problem with impacted food in the same spot, visit your dentist. If you wear a fixed bridge and have a problem with particles of food getting under it, flossing is generally the best solution. Particles can also lodge between the tooth and the gum. Once again, the soft end of an interdental stimulator is the best tool for releasing it. Bear in mind, though, wherever you have something like a piece of popcorn wedged into a space in your mouth, you don’t want to damage a tooth or your gums. If the troublesome piece does not come out with reasonable, moderate effort, see your dentist. He or she will have the skill and the tools to remove it safely.

D-58 approves three-year lease for new Chromebooks By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved leasing 2,000 Chromebooks for three years during its meeting. The cost of the program will be $560,838.02, according to board documents, with the district making annual payments of $186,279.34. The district has 2,500 MacBooks to supplement its 1:1 iPad program, according to James Eichmiller, district director of innovative technology and

learning. While the iPads can be used for creative projects, laptops are needed for long-form writing and taking standardized tests. “It’s a good blend of having access to both devices,” he said. Eichmiller said the Chromebooks will be supplementary devices and the iPads will remain the primary education tool. Matthew Rich, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the number of devices required depends on class size. The district needs enough computers for two grades to take standardized tests simultaneously. This, Rich

said, will help eliminate testing days. Some of the MacBooks, Eichmiller said, are 7 years old and in need of replacement. At an April meeting, the board approved disposing of and selling old MacBooks and iMacs, which will be replaced by the Chromebooks. MacBooks cost $1,000 per device while Chromebooks cost $250 per device, Rich said, adding that the district will get more value from the Chromebooks. Chromebooks also will be introduced at Community School District 99 in the fall. Board member John Miller said he was in favor of providing consis-

tency in devices and preparing students for what they will use in high school. “It’s nice to see the coordination,” he said. “It gets rid of some of that summer fog, too.” The district also unanimously voted to improve its wireless network by purchasing 220 wireless access points and 13 wireless controllers for $117,399.10. The equipment will increase the district’s bandwidth and make it easier for students to access the Internet. The district has 341 total wireless access points, 220 of which are more than 5 years old and some of which are 10 years old.

D-99 board hires School Exec Connect for superintendent search By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Community School District 99’s Board of Education has approved hiring School Exec Connect to search for the district’s next superintendent. The board made the decision at its May 4 meeting. School Exec Connect and Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates presented. Both firms have worked

with the board previously. Board members discussed the proposals after representatives from the firms left the meeting room. School Exec Connect was used by the district in 2008 when Superintendent Mark McDonald was hired. McDonald has previously said he will retire when his contract expires June 30, 2016. According to its board proposal, School Exec Connect would charge a consulting fee of $17,500 in addition to

other search-related expenses. Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates would have charged a consulting fee of $19,500 plus additional costs. School Exec Connect’s presentation was delivered by Thomas Madden and Kathryn Robbins, both of whom have ties to the community. Madden is the former principal of Downers Grove South High School and was with School Exec Connect when it hired McDonald. Robbins lives in Downers Grove.

Board members overwhelmingly favored using School Exec Connect. “I thought they both had wonderful things to offer,” Board President Nancy Kupka said. “I just felt more comfortable with School Exec.” Board member Michael Davenport said School Exec Connect had a stronger request for proposal and presentation than the other firm.

Village to host regional veterans celebration

“We’re expecting in the hundreds,” he said. Stanger said the group was looking for a family-oriented event to honor veterans. “We wanted to have something that was a high-quality event that not only attracted as many veterans as possible, but

as many citizens as possible,” he said. Stanger said they didn’t want to host the event on Memorial Day because it would pull people away from other festivities, so they settled on the weekend before. The event, which is open to the public, will include a barbecue, where veterans eat free. There also will be activities and contests throughout the day. One of the highlights, Stanger said, will be a flag quilt veterans will help make. The quilt will start completely white and veterans will have the opportunity to dip their hand in red or blue paint, press it onto the quilt and sign their name next to their handprint. “It’s going to be beautiful,” Stanger said. There also will be a battlefield

monument ceremony to honor fallen soldiers, which Stanger said will be a “very touching service.” Other activities will include face-painting, an apple pie contest, marching lessons, an interactive fire truck display and a kazoo band performance for kids. Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said the event will be a “terrific tribute” to veterans and he’s pleased the village is serving as host. “Events like this are some of the things that make the community as desirable as it is,” he said. Although this is the first time they’ve had such an event, Stanger is hopeful for a good turnout. “We’re trying to have a very positive, uplifting, quality event for the whole family,” he said.

LETTERS Disappointed with village, developer over Edwards House

To the editor: It is pathetic irony to read on Page 2 of the April 29 edition of Suburban Life about the pending demise of the Edwards House, a recognized historically significant Victorian-era design home in Downers Grove. And then to read on Page 4, the gushing of pride over the Downers Grove Founders Day to celebrate “the founding of the village and the historic sites in town.” Yet we are about to lose yet another one of the “historical sites” with pending demolition of the majestic Edwards House. Pathetic in another way was the approval by the Downers Grove council and planning committee for granting the building permit to allow a massive 55-unit condominium building to be built on the site of the Edwards House without including a requirement by the developer to move the house to another location. This is a highly short-sighted decision made by our elected officials. The recent election has shown that the people of Downers Grove do not approve of the past elected officials’ decisions, as new council members were voted in. Greed knows no limits. The council looks at it for 55 tax bills where once were two. As for the developer, his only interest is in making money off the building, and I’m sure he will do quite well. His interest is not the welfare of the residents of Downers Grove or the preservation of our community, only in himself and his ability to make a profit at the expense of Downers Grove residents losing a piece of history. When the project is done, he’s gone, and so is the Edwards House. Only a mere memory will remain. Howard M. Anderson Downers Grove

Keep accountability and transparency As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to accept successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances. One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the website www.publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. For more than 200 VIEWS years, newspapers have been Dennis paid to print public notices Derossett – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print. All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website. With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across thousands of websites doesn’t make sense. Local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

Consolidation efforts a great step forward In the aftermath of the Illinois Supreme Court’s expected decision to strike down the 2013 pension reform law, the state now finds itself in an even bigger fiscal hole than the one it already faced. There’s no telling how our officials will proceed. Whether the governor and Legislature opt for raising taxes, reducing services or putting off the problem, or some combination of those options, there’s clearly going to be less money around to do the important things that government needs to do. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti’s task force, which looks at consolidation and unfunded mandates, now is more relevant than when it was created. The state and DuPage County can’t afford to tolerate the waste that comes from duplicated services and the overhead created by duplicated bureaucracies. Chances are, everyone’s heard this by now, but it needs to be repeated anyway: Illinois has far more units of government than any other state in the U.S., with almost 7,000. No other state even has 5,000. That’s right – we could eliminate 2,000 governmental entities in Illinois (almost 30 percent of the state’s total) and still lead the nation. Sanguinetti, a former Wheaton City Council member well versed in the mishmash of agencies that lord over DuPage County, stopped by West Chicago recently to talk about her task force’s effort. “This is not the first study of its kind when it comes to units of government,” she told a gathering of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton. “Prior administrations have conducted these studies, and then nothing happens with them.”

But the push for consolidation in DuPage already has begun, and there’s cause for optimism that it might have some teeth this time. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has talked about dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority, which exists solely to receive and then dole out funds to the DuPage Fair Association for the annual DuPage County Fair. In 2014, the County Board dissolved the redundant Fairview Fire Protection District and reportedly was looking to do the same to the North Westmont Fire Protection District and the Salt Creek and Highland Hills sanitary districts. And now, state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democratic DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplan are teaming up to ask Sanguinetti’s task force to consider eliminating the DuPage Election Commission. In most other counties in Illinois, elections are run by the county clerk’s office. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” Nybo said. Those are the kinds of questions we need to be asking all across the county and the state. There are going to be hard financial decisions happening in Springfield that are going to painful. There’s no way around it. Consolidation has the potential to create meaningful savings in a relatively painless fashion. It won’t solve the budget crisis all by itself, but it’s certainly a responsible place to start attacking the problem.

Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. He is survived by his children, Glenn (Judy) Stanfield, Diane (Brian) Krupicka, David (Julie) Stanfield; stepchildren, Gabrielle Schmidt and Michael (Olivia) Shapiro. Proud grandfather of 13, great grandfather of 30 and great great grandfather of 2. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn (Art) Ehle. Memorials in his honor to the Salvation Army.

BARTH MEMORIAL CEREMONY Thursday, May 14, 2015 1:00 p.m. First Presbyterian Church 339 4th Street, Downers Grove, IL

The Downers Grove Police Department holds this annual memorial service during National Law Enforcement Week to remember fallen officers, including the only Downers Grove officer to die in the line of duty, Officer Richard J. Barth. On March 18, 1974, Officer Barth had responded to a call of two suspicious youths carrying a paper bag into what is now known as Hooper's Hollow Park. As Officer Barth approached the youths, he was not aware that they had just committed a residential burglary in the area and were viewing the proceeds. When Officer Barth requested identification, one of the youths, Paul Fontani, fatally shot him. Paul Fontani pled guilty to murder and received a 50-100 year prison term. In a cooperative effort between the Downers Grove Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #73, the Village of Downers Grove, and the Downers Grove Park District, the Richard J. Barth Memorial was dedicated at Barth Pond (Patriot's Park) on May 20, 1998, to honor our only fallen officer in Downers Grove. This memorial serves as a constant reminder that violence is everywhere and even the quiet community of Downers Grove is not immune.

Suburban Life celebrates 12 Women of Distinction By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com In an effort to continue a new tradition, Suburban Life Magazine hosted its second annual Women of Distinction Awards event Thursday at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The event, which stems from a tradition started by Shaw Media and McHenry County Magazine in 2012, recognizes 12 women of the western suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said.

The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

Porlier and Miyax Leon are the lone remaining active players from that squad, and they would like nothing more than to close their careers with another trip to state. “This year we have a really good possibility of doing what we did in 2012 and go downstate again,” Porlier said. “I would do anything to get back there. It was an unreal experience.” To do so, Porlier and the Mustangs (11-6-2) would have to win the Class 3A Hinsdale Central sectional, where they are seeded third, and get past likely supersectional opponent Naperville North. That won’t be easy considering Naperville North routed Downers South 6-1 Saturday night. The Huskies (14-2) scored four goals in the first half, two on penalty kicks, and never looked back. “I hope we see them again because I would love a re-do,” said Porlier, who scored Downers South’s only goal, her 11th of the season, on a penalty kick. “It’s not that we played bad altogether. It was little things on specific plays that led to more and more problems that we just didn’t fix quick enough. “Obviously it wasn’t the outcome we wanted or the outcome we imagined, but we will use this as motivation for the playoffs.” Porlier, who will join for-

That’s something that I learned from Sarrah [and 2012 standouts], Jess Bronke, Flo Beshiri and Jess Pikul. I have to thank them for everything [I can

do now] because they are the ones that mentored me.” Now Porlier is the one doing the mentoring, which Hernandez says will pay off for the program sooner or later. “We’re in the middle of turning the program around, so with the senior group and the leadership that they bring and then the crop of juniors that we have, we have a really strong mix,” Hernandez said. “We definitely have potential in terms of making that sectional final. If they keep working hard in terms of details they need to fix, it would be nice to see.”
