By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Park District has approved purchasing 14.8 acres of land for future development. The district has agreed to pay $304,054 per acre for the property at Ogden and Walnut avenues, directly north of the Walnut Avenue sports field, according to a district news release. A deal has been reached and the entire property will cost $4.5 million, although the sale has not yet closed. The district will close on the property this summer, and will pay for the land by issuing bonds, according to district Board of Commissioners President Matt Cushing. The bonds will be repaid through district operating funds. “We do not intend a tax raise to pay for this,” Cushing said. The board will have a public hear-
land on Ogden Avenue for future commercial development. Cushing said the property, which the district hopes to eventually turn into sports fields, has been on its wish list for 20 years. “That is one of the biggest needs we have right now,” he said. The land will remain undeveloped until a firm plan is established for it, according to Cushing. LETTERS FROM THE IRS AND IL
are more frequent now since the IRS and IL are very busy this summer! Some examples of notices you might receive are: • Omitted income from matching of IRS information and what you have included on your tax return - the IRS is reviewing 2012 and 2013 tax returns now. • Bills for Penalties and Interest for underpayment of 2014 tax (if you owed more than $1000 to the IRS or $500 to IL) or discrepancies with ES tax paid • Notice requesting documentation of deductions (especially charitable donations) • Deficiency notice for additional taxes • Request for tax returns from nonfilers These ONLY come via snail mail - any call you get saying you owe money or have a tax issue is NOT the IRS. It is called Phishing and many, many taxpayers have been scammed out of millions of dollars. Do NOT talk to them or give them any information! Strauss Tax Service can help you respond to IRS and IL Letters. As an Enrolled Agent, we can represent you before the IRS, prepare letters with back up material and track your case. We can also prepare IL returns and work with the State to get you up to date with IL taxes filed and paid. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9AM – 5PM, M – F or by appointment.

DOWNERS GROVE – A jury awarded $4.25 million to a Chicago man who stabbed himself 30 times while in a psychiatric ward at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. Philip Sandler, a former tax attorney, won his case against the Downers Grove hospital during the week of May 3. Elizabeth Kaveny, Sandler’s attorney, said the case focused on safety measures that were in place at the hospital. She said Good Samaritan knew the risks and dangers for someone placed in a psychiatric ward. “They just didn’t follow the rules,” Kaveny said. Kaveny said Sandler had bouts of depression and anxiety and attempted suicide by taking anti-depressants in
Ask Dr. Webster
CONSEQUENCES OF A LOST TOOTH Q: What happens when you lose a tooth? A: There are a number of ways to lose a tooth. A fall or some other type of accident can knock a tooth out, or a tooth may finally fall victim to decay or loosen and fall out because of periodontal, or gum, disease. One of the dangers of a lost tooth is that it can start a domino effect in your mouth. In the normal healthy mouth, the closely packed teeth support one another. When there is a gap in that support system, over time the teeth near the gap will start to shift and loosen. So if you lose a tooth, for whatever reason, you should consult a dentist immediately. Your dentist may recommend a crown or a bridge. A crown would be fitted over the remaining portion of a tooth that was essentially, but not completely, lost. A bridge is an appliance that fills the space where a tooth is completely lost. You may also be a candidate for an implant, which involves putting a metal anchor directly into the jaw and, after a time, attaching a small post and artificial tooth to the anchor. Not everyone, however, is a candidate for an implant. You must have sufficient jawbone for the procedure to be successful. If you are missing a tooth, or have loose teeth, talk with a dentist about your options. The best way to cut down the likelihood of being in that position, though, is to visit your dentist at least twice a year.

August 2007. He called 911, was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and treated in the emergency room before being taken to a medical floor. The next day, Sandler attempted suicide again by wrapping cords found in the room around his neck, according to Kaveny. After a psychiatric evaluation, Sandler was committed to the psychiatric ward at Good Samaritan. When he was taken to the psychiatric ward, Sandler had a knife in his pants pocket that was not discovered, Kaveny said. He turned in the knife the next day, and hospital officials were supposed to remove the knife from the facility. “Unfortunately, they didn’t do that. They didn’t remove the knife from the unit,” Kaveny said. Instead, the knife was placed in Sandler’s locker with his other possessions. Later that day, Sandler asked for his personal items so he could give his house key to his brother. While looking through his things, he took the knife and hid it in his room. Kaveny said since Sandler had a high risk for suicide, hospital staff were supposed to check on him every 15 minutes. But he wasn’t being monitored.
Around 3:30 a.m., Sandler took the knife and stabbed himself 30 times in the thigh, back, wrist and neck, according to Kaveny. “For hours, he was left alone in his room with his knife,” she said. A nurse found Sandler four hours later after slipping in a pool of his blood. He was taken into surgery, where doctors saved his life. “While we cannot comment on this case, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the patient. We remain committed to providing the safest and highest quality care to every patient,” the hospital said in a statement. The jury awarded Sandler a verdict of $4.25 million, which Kaveny said would help Sandler support himself. Sandler lost more than half of the blood in his body, which Kaveny said resulted in a brain injury. He was institutionalized for a year and spent additional time in a halfway house. Kaveny said Sandler cannot practice law any longer and has difficulty supporting himself. “I think the verdict amount was very fair,” she said. The jury also found Sandler had no contributory negligence, which Kaveny said is a big victory in a case dealing with mental illness. That decision, she said, finds that the patient is not responsible for actions brought on by mental illness. “It’s not fair to, in a court of law, hold them responsible for not being safe,” Kaveny said. “Of course they’re not safe. That’s why they’re there in the first place.”
Downers Grove police investigating possible peeking in park bathroom SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police are looking into an incident in which a man may have been peeking at women from inside a bathroom stall at a public park, village officials stated in a news release. Police were called at 7:44 p.m. May 12 to Whitlock Park. A woman went to use the women’s bathroom at the park and saw a person she believed to be a man wearing black gym shoes and khaki pants standing behind the stall door and looking through the door’s crack, according to the release.
The woman left the bathroom and a short time later, a child exited it. It is unknown if there was contact between the child and the person in the stall, the release stated. The woman, along with another woman, entered the bathroom again and found the person still in the stall, according to the release. The two called police, but the bathroom was empty when officers arrived. Police have increased patrols at all village parks as a result of this incident, the release stated. Anyone with information should contact the police at 630-434-5600.
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – A former Downers Grove physician has been sentenced to eight years in prison for possession of child pornography. On May 15, Edward J. McMenamin, 68, of the 4200 block of Saratoga Avenue, Downers Grove, was sentenced by Judge Liam Brennan to eight years in the Illinois Edward J. Department of Correc- McMenamin tions for possession of child porn, according to a news release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin. A known physician who had been practicing medicine in the village for about 30 years, McMenamin pleaded guilty in March to one count of child pornography, a Class X felony. The Downers Grove Police Department received information from the Illinois Attorney General and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in 2013 about the possible dissemination and possession of child pornography in the village. Police were led to McMenamin and discovered he was in possession of numerous images and videos depicting child pornography, according to the release. Police arrested McMenamin on May 29, 2014. He posted a $500,000 bond. “Child pornographers such as Edward McMenamin believe their sickening needs trump the law,” Berlin said in the release. “Today, Mr. McMenamin learned that his lust for child pornography, which claims hundreds of thousands of victims every year, will cost him his freedom for the next eight years.” McMenamin was initially charged with 17 felony counts of possession and dissemination of child pornography. After pleading guilty to one count of child pornography in March, he faced up to 30 years in prison. McMenamin must serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He also must register as a sex offender for life, according to the release.

Village plans for $2.5M in road fixes By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Village Council had the first reading for nearly $2.5 million in road resurfacing for Downers Grove at its meeting May 12. If approved on second reading, the village would hire the lowest bidder, J.A. Johnson Paving Co. of Arlington Heights, according to village documents. The project covers a total of 6.11 miles of roadway. The resurfacing would be paid for using the village’s Motor Fuel Tax and Capital Projects funds. The following streets will be paved under the proposal: • 40th Street between Morton and Seeley avenues • 41st Street between Saratoga Avenue and Main Street • Aubrey Terrace between Maple Avenue and the southern cul de sac • Birch Avenue between Washington and Elm streets • Bryan Place between Prairie Avenue and Rogers Street • Carol Street between Lacey Road and Lee Street • Cornell Avenue between Curtiss Street and Gilbert Avenue • Curtiss Street between Belmont Road and Cornell Avenue • Downers Drive between Ogden Avenue and Herbert Street • Forest Avenue between Havens Court and 41st Street • Franklin Street between Main and Washington streets • Glenview Avenue between Curtiss and Hitchcock streets • Havens Court between Forest Avenue and Main Street • Herbert Street between Morton and Seeley avenues • Highland Avenue between Rogers Street and Prairie Avenue • Hitchcock Avenue between Belmont Road and Cornell Avenue • Janet Street between Lacey Road and Belle Aire Lane • Lee Avenue between Ogden Avenue and Virginia Street • Lincoln Street between Main and Washington streets • Morton Avenue between 40th and Herbert streets • Northcott Avenue between Janet and 40th streets • Otis Avenue between Douglas Road and Fairview Avenue • Plymouth Street between Jefferson and Maple avenues • Seeley Avenue between 40th and Herbert streets • Thornwood Drive between Plymouth Street and Dunham Road • Virginia Street between Lee Street and Belle Aire Lane The village was expected to have the second reading of the project at its May 19 meeting.

Karen Bushy, owner of Memories & Beyond in Downers Grove, will close up her shop May 31. While the story will close at the end of the month, Bushy said she will fondly remember the shop as a safe location for people who like scrapbooking to come together and enjoy their evening. “There is a limited opportunity of places to go … just to spend some time with their friends” for hobby-related activities, she said. After being open seven days a week for the past several years, Bushy said she plans to spend her new-found free time at home catching up on her
spring cleaning. But, no stranger to retirement, Bushy already has agreed to teach a Bible Studies class for Immanuel Lutheran Church in Downers Grove. “This is my fourth time retiring. I’ll get it right eventually,” Bushy said. Bushy lamented her store’s closing will result in a lot of people no longer coming to Downers Grove, as her clientele is made up of the northern third of Illinois and beyond. Some of her customers have hailed from Indiana and
Milwaukee, Wis. “I would say far and away most of our customers come from outside the area,” she said. “We routinely have people here from Peoria, Kankakee, Quad Cities, Rockford.” Bushy also has gotten to know her customers over the years, and she takes pride in being able to help others detail the most intimate moments of their lives. “Scrapbooks are a big part of people’s lives,” she said. Memories & Beyond will remain open daily until May 31. Items are being sold at full price.

By Denise Freese Learning to dance provides a wonderful form of self-expression, a great way to exercise, and a skill to be used forever. From ballet to tap, modern to ballroom, and hip-hop to jazz, there are many styles of dance, all worth learning. It’s important to find a studio that fits your personal needs, so you will feel comfortable and have fun as you or your child learns to dance. Things to consider when choosing a dance studio include: Studio setting: Your studio should be clean, open, and comfortable. Make sure you like the vibe in the studio; you’ll be spending a lot of time there. Qualified Teachers: Check the qualifications of the instructors. They should have a degree in dance, relevant dance experience, and the knowledge needed to instruct people with different body types, abilities, and learning styles.
Dance Floor Type: Don’t ever dance on a concrete floor. A cushioned, or “sprung” floor offers shock absorption for joints and feet, and is safer for your body. What are the class sizes? For fun or recreation, consider a larger class. For serious dancers who want individual attention, try smaller classes. Is there a variety of dance forms offered? Some studios focus on 1 form. While that is okay for some, most dancers tend to want to take a variety of classes. Other things to consider; tuition, location, class availability/times, and class trial offerings. If possible, talk to friends or co-workers who have had a good experience with a studio for their input. By putting effort into gathering the relevant information, you’re sure to choose a studio that is right for you.

DOWNERS GROVE – Memories & Beyond, a scrapbooking shop on 75th Street in Downers Grove, will close its doors for the last time May 31. Store owner and former Oak Brook Mayor Karen Bushy said there’s a combination of things that led to the decision, including increases in rent, property taxes and minimum wage. “The combination of all those things is too much,” the Oak Brook resident said. The minimum wage increase has a ripple effect on the rest of business, Bushy said. Her workers compensation goes up because her total payroll has increased. She also has to compensate for a tax increase and a social security increase, and her suppliers are raising their prices because of the minimum wage hike. “There’s a limit to what you can absorb,” she said. Memories & Beyond has been in its current location for 10 years and Bushy has owned the store for the last five years, originally deciding to get involved because she has a passion for scrapbooking.

The power of a parent to influence teens With spring and summer come celebrations and vacations – and an increase in risky social situations for high school-age students. From the moment our students enter through our doors as freshmen, we are vigilant in our substance abuse prevention efforts. Throughout the school year, we promote awareness campaigns to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. We nurture student leaders to serve as positive peer role models. Our community partnerships, including those with the Downers Grove and Woodridge police departments and Downers Grove Township, help us provide students with the attention they need. Our collective efforts promote healthful choices, positive development and academic success. While these programs and partnerships are important, parents are the most critical part in keeping students safe. Our survey results are clear that parents have power: • The No. 1 reason why teens choose to not drink or use drugs? Because they don’t want to disappoint or get in trouble with their parents and family. When it comes to substance use, teens value the opinion of their parents more than the opinion of their peers. • Students benefit from parents who make their expectations about drinking and drug use clear and remind them of their family’s values. For example, 80 percent of students report their families have clear rules about substance use. Having these open lines of communication builds trust and encourages honesty. • Students look to parents as models of how to handle stress, conflict and life’s challenges. When parents celebrate and express joy in healthy ways rather than normalizing substance abuse, it makes a positive and lasting impact. • Most teens do not drink alcohol or use drugs regularly. We know that teens may misperceive this fact and default to the thinking that “everyone is doing it.” But the opposite is true. The teen years are not the time for parents to turn tentative. We encourage parents to get to know their teen’s friends – and the parents of these friends. Creating an itinerary for the night – and knowing who their teens are with, where they’re going, and what time they’ll be home – isn’t nosy but necessary. Parents are a powerfully positive influence.
District 99 Student Assistance Coordinators Diana Benoist (South High School in Downers Grove) and Keith Bullock (North High School in Downers Grove) support the development of student leaders, coordinate school-based prevention activities and events and provide education and intervention services in substance use and social-emotional health.

OUR VIEW
Railway oil tanker concerns need to be taken seriously We spend a lot of time worrying about preventing things that might never happen. We buy homeowners’ insurance and install smoke detectors in case a fire ever breaks out. We grab an umbrella on the way out the door in case it rains. We arrange for our first responders to have training in all sorts of emergency situations, in case anyone in our community should ever experience such a calamity. The thing is, we never really know how likely any of these things are. Most of us know someone who has dealt with a house fire, but most people don’t have their house burn down. There was rain in the forecast for this past Sunday, but barely a drop was seen. Some first responders get special training in case of a train derailment of an oil shipment, but that almost never – Well, that last one isn’t quite as true as it used to be. While train derailments are still quite rare, the number of oil shipments on our railways has skyrocketed – and there have been some unsettling derailments of those shipments in North America. In 2008, there were 9,500 railway oil shipments recorded in the U.S.; by 2013, that number had risen to 435,000, according to a Congressional report. That massive spike has been accompanied this year by derailments in West Virginia and Ontario and one in March in Galena, Ill. Fortunately, there have been no deaths in these incidents, but the same can’t be said for the village of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in Canada, which suffered 47 deaths after a derailment and explosion in 2013. Many of these oil tankers are rumbling through Chicago’s suburbs on a daily basis, including on Metra’s BNSF, Union Pacific West and Heritage Corridor lines. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, who’s eager to bring more attention to this issue, has heard reports that there are about 40 shipments going through his village on a weekly basis. As Weitzel points out, most of the communities in western Cook and DuPage counties were built around their rail lines, with vibrant

commercial districts nestled right up to the tracks. If an incident like what happened in Quebec were to occur here, the toll could be catastrophic. Weitzel has worked to bring attention not only to this risk but to the lack of training available for local police officers, who would likely be the first to respond to the scene of any such accident. He’s sent letters to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to Anthony Foxx, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, pointing out the difficulties local agencies have in getting information on when exactly such tankers are passing through and in getting training for officers. Such training already exists, Weitzel said, and there are programs in place to allow firefighters to make use of it. But he said the cost, distance and lengthy waiting list make it impractical for him to send any officers right now. Thus far, Weitzel has received no response from his letters. He’s had informal discussions with other state and federal officials and received nothing more than vague promises, or protestations that he’s overstating the issue, that the train cars that pass through our area aren’t going fast enough to derail or real-time information on the tankers can’t be shared for fear of terrorists intercepting and then misusing the information. It’s easy to dismiss Weitzel’s concerns. But it seems like every disaster of the past 20 years has had some sort of warning ignored, whether it was 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ... the list goes on. Are the odds of an oil tanker derailment and explosion in our area high? Probably not. But knowing there’s a lot more oil flowing through our towns on a regular basis, it sure would be comforting to know someone is taking these concerns seriously. We’d like to see state and especially federal officials take more steps to ease everyone’s minds that everything possible is being done to prevent another Lac-Mégantic incident.

So the Clintons’ have reported making “mistakes” on past tax returns for the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Family Foundation. With the hundreds of millions of dollars involved, I would think they would have hired expert, high-priced accountants to work on those tax returns instead of going to H&R Block!
Animal shelters are not zoos
To the person who said to stop shooing people away from shelter animals, we are not shooing people away who are ready to adopt an animal, a family pet. We don’t want the people who are coming for something to do because they clog up the shelter like a zoo. We want the people that are 100-percent ready to adopt; anybody else can see the animals on our website. And in regards to the rescues that do not have a brick-andmortar building, those people have the most limited time to spend adopting an animal out because they do not have a physical shelter. Their animals are at vet offices or foster homes. So, until you are 100-percent ready to adopt and see an animal, don’t fill out an application.
Three questions for dog owners
I have three questions for dog owners. Can dogs stay inside their home for more than two hours without having to relieve themselves? Why don’t dog owners use their own properties to let their dogs relieve themselves? Why is it OK to use other people’s properties to let dogs relieve themselves?

Health clubs’ unfair practices
Someone needs to fix health clubs’ cancellation policies. No matter how much of a notice you give, you still wind up paying for the extra month. You pay an enrollment fee, you pay a monthly fee, you sign up right away and can start working out, but even when I brought my health club a doctor’s note saying that I had to stop my workout regimen, I was charged an extra month ... That’s just wrong.

SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese Technology has advanced to the degree that it’s almost impossible to go an entire day without using it in some way. Colleges and high schools were the first to incorporate technology in the classrooms in the form of laptops and interactive smart boards, in order to prepare students for technological requirements of the jobs they would soon hold. Currently, even middle schools and elementary schools are integrating technological devices into the classrooms. Children as young as age 3 typically learn how to play games on an iPad or an iPhone, and most are advanced enough by the time they enter school to be able to use devices as an advantage in helping them study and learning new concepts. At St. Mary of Gostyn School, beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, children in grades 5-8 will receive their own Surface tablet or Chromebook for school and home use. Grade 4 students will use Lenovo Thinkpads in the classroom, and K-grade 3 students will have iPad centers at school
at their disposal. “Two computer labs, an instructional/literacy lab and a library computer center for online database searches, will be available to students,” said Mary Buchler, Technology Director with SMG. She added, “Also, the entire SMG campus has WiFi connectivity.” This progressive approach to technological integration has many benefits for students, teachers, and parents at the school. Google Classroom is a software program that is used for collaborative projects; students submit assignments electronically to teachers, and teachers can assess, comment on, and evaluate the assignment. As all the area high schools use this program, SMG students are being prepared for the upcoming years. Edline is a program that stores grades online for grades 6-8. Grades are updated weekly by teachers for access by both students and their parents. Teacher webpages are linked to the parish website, so parents, teachers, and students can communicate effectively, according to Buchler.

Shame on College of DuPage’s vice chairwoman, Deanne Mazzochi. Her argument at a recent meeting was utterly embarrassing to anyone that lives in College of DuPage’s district. Not recognizing Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda was very political and just beat those two women down after they already lost the election. Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their fifth NWSL regular season game on Friday, fighting back from two goals down against hosts Houston Dash, courtesy of a second consecutive brace by reigning NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta. The rookie bagged both of her tallies in the second half, including the first immediately after Houston had doubled its lead courtesy of a Kealia Ohai strike. Rachel Axon had scored the day’s opening goal for the Dash on an opening-half penalty kick. The hosts created the first promising opportunity in the 10th minute, Jen LaPonte hitting a long ball into the penalty area and Brittany Bock beating netminder Michele Dalton to the ball, only to see her headed redirect float just over the frame. The Dash had another quality look 14 minutes later, as Chicago’s New Zealand international Abby Erceg headed the ball out to Tiffany McCarty at the edge of the box and the 24-year-old fired through traffic to force a solid stop from Dalton. Houston did find the net just before the half-hour mark. Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland’s desperation tackle brought Ohai to the ground inside the area and Rachael Axon opened the scoring by side-footing a textbook penalty kick inside the right post. Huerta first knocked on the Dash door in the 41st minute of the match, as she received the ball at the top of the box and cut across a defender to her left before rifling a left-footed blast toward goal that was parried wide by diving opposition goalkeeper Bianca Henninger. Chicago increased the urgency after the break and created two close looks in quick succession. In the 56th minute, Alyssa Mautz crossed the ball in from the right and a wide-open Rachel Quon pushed the ball wide for an agonizing miss from the doorstep. Mautz sent in another dangerous cross from the same flank moments later, and Vanessa DiBernardo redirected it to Hoy at the far post, followed by a toe poke under pressure that

sent the ball sailing over the bar from close range. Instead of seeing the scores leveled, the fans at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium celebrated the Dash’s second tally on an excellent counter attack just before the hour mark. Having won possession inside their own penalty area, the hosts played the ball out to Melissa Henderson near the center circle, and the 25-year-old sprinted into the opposition half before releasing a streaking Ohai. The second-year attacker did well to confidently slot her finish underneath the onrushing Dalton to double her side’s lead. The Red Stars promptly responded to the additional setback. Hoy’s delicate 60th-minute touch put Hoy through on the right side of the box and the first-year forward found the net with a wellplaced shot toward the far post. The visitors continued to put pressure on the Dash following the goal, and Mautz nearly added the icing on her strong individual performance with a 68th-minute equalizer, the Houston defense scrambling to clear the Missouri native’s redirect of Danielle Colaprico’s corner kick from the left off the line. Chicago’s relentlessness finally paid off in the 81st minute, Gilliland sending a ball into the penalty area that substitute Cara Walls laid off to Huerta, who displayed some outstanding footwork in cutting to her left and blasting a low shot past the outstretched arm of metminder Henninger. It would be the final noteworthy moment of the match, as the visitors remained at the top of the NWSL table with a hard-earned point on the road. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in six regular season games when they travel to take on defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, May 23. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting [ http://www.chicagoredstars.com ]www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Please remember that collection will be one day later during this week and includes Saturday pickup for those whose regular collection day is Friday. Parking Free parking in Village lots is available on Memorial Day.
MEMORIAL DAY TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including Memorial Day. This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and is funded with an IDOT traffic grant. Officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones. This May 11 through May 25, the Downers Grove Police Department will be joining hundreds of other Illinois law enforcement agencies to remind motorists to "Click-it or Ticket." The Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer vacation season and the police department wants to ensure that everyone makes it to their destination safely. It is the perfect time to remind everyone that seat belt use is the law for anyone in the front and back seat of the car. During the 2014 Memorial Day holiday weekend there were 12 traffic fatalities. Three of those fatalities were alcohol related. The best defense against an impaired driver is a safety belt. Buckle up, every trip, every time, every vehicle, every position.

Hands down of course, the chicken is the hero of the meal. Never frozen, the meat is marinated for 24 hours and cooked to order. According to the restaurant’s website, the recipe dates back to two female farm owners who sold chickens to the original spot when it was just a gas station with a lunch counter around the 1940s. Dell Rhea took over the Chicken Basket in 1963, and what endures is the carefully crafted, breaded and deep-fried meal – a crunchy, tender, lip-smacking and succulent sensation. The baked mac and cheese is a hearty complementary dish to the main course. Tiny elbow macaroni are smothered in what the eatery describes as a “Colorado River of Cheese Sauce,” topped with shredded cheeses and baked until golden brown. The restaurant menu extends to sandwiches, ribs, salad bar, soups and seafood, plus prime rib, roast turkey and other specials on various days of the week.

Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, whose origins date back to a gas station lunch counter, is part of the Route 66 Hall of Fame. The restaurant also is home to the Blue Rooster cocktail lounge.
The only mistake my parents and I made that Sunday afternoon was not saving room for dessert. And for those who know me and my mother best, the only way to our hearts is a classic root beer float. Dell Rhea’s, which also proposes a Route 66 Dreamsicle Float and a slice of apple, key lime or cherry pie, keeps in mind that the best way to truly start and end a meal is with the company you keep, savoring the time you spend together.

WILLOWBROOK – Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket is tucked among small, one-story buildings and a few chain hotels on a dusty, winding road that once reigned as Route 66. Today, the towering neon marquee of the Willowbrook establishment enjoys a quieter perch. Inside tells a different story. Clusters of relatives and favorite friends are gathered around small tables draped in red-andwhite-checkered tablecloths. A darker shade of patterned red curtains flanks the windows. Ceramic chickens, framed newspaper articles and photographs fill in the spaces of sporadically placed shelves and countertops. A small fireplace stands flat against the wall on the far end of the dining room. The room feels familiar. It feels like home. And there’s no denying that the 66-plus-yearold restaurant has greeted passersby throughout the decades, treated them like family and wished them well on the way to their destinations. As for the Chicken Basket, it arrived in the Route 66 Hall of Fame. As my parents and I took our seats and scanned the menu, we adopted the rhythm of the nostalgic room, swapping smiles and stories. Importantly, we prepped ourselves for the beginning of our comfort food adventure. We began our meal with appetizers we consider classic – fried chicken liver and gizzards. The tasty starters were served with sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce. What’s noteworthy about them is their flaky coating, especially the chicken gizzards. Both were crispy, moist and lightly seasoned – neither bogged down by a dry outer crust nor drowning in oil. Our appetizers were followed shortly by two of Dell Rhea’s specialties – its famous fried chicken in a basket and baked mac and cheese. The basket comes with four, finger-licking pieces of chicken (leg, wing, breast and thigh), shoestring french fries, homemade coleslaw and baked biscuits. I don’t even know

Stay focused while golfing SPONSORED BY
By C.R. Walker Unlike team sports like basketball and lacrosse, golf is an individual, slowpaced game. You tee off and it could be several minutes before you take your next shot. That’s a lot of downtime and certainly even the best of players can lose their mental edge due to interruptions in play. A private coach can help you with your swing and also teach you more about how to choose clubs and attack a hole, but what about the mental aspect of golf? How do you block out the many distractions that are part of spending several hours on the links? Your cell phone ringing, work concerns, birds chirping, other players talking, loud golf carts whizzing around the course and others yelling, “Fore!” all need to be blocked out so you can perform at an optimum level.
It sounds easy to block those things out, but how many times have you looked back on a round and blamed a bad shot on distractions? Chances are petty good that it’s happened often. If you’re willing to spend time polishing your game at the driving range and the practice green, you’re still doing yourself a disservice by not maximizing your potential by improving your mental health. At BrainShape in Hinsdale, you can give yourself the edge over your playing partners through sports performance training. They offer Interactive Metronome (IM) therapy which rewires your internal brain clock by increasing, regenerating and strengthening the neural pathways in your brain. It will help you improve your balance, endurance, focus, timing, coordination and ability to focus at all times, which will ultimately improve your golf game. Now’s the time to maximize your performance at Brain Shape, 201 E. Ogden Ave., Suite, 106. Plenty of great months of golf lie ahead. Don’t you want to be at your best? DOWNERS GROVE – Danny Oriente knows nothing but success in West Suburban Gold baseball. He was with the Mustangs last year when they went undefeated to win the Gold title, and the junior helped South wrap up another 18-0 run through the conference with a 16-2, five-inning win against Proviso East on May 18. Baseball is not a game that lends itself to long winning streaks, so winning 36 straight conference games is a special achievement not lost on Oriente or his teammates. “It means everything. It’s awesome,” Oriente said. “I’m really proud of these guys, to be honest. We worked hard and we stuck together, and we’re grateful we had good health throughout it.” Oriente and the Mustangs, who improved to 25-3 with the win against Proviso East, jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Oriente tripled twice, scored twice and drove in two runs in the first before exiting the game. Every player in the starting lineup reached base successfully and scored at least one run in the first inning onslaught. Robert Justus and Tommy Steinhaus each drove in three runs in the first, just two of several new varsity starters the Mustangs plugged in after seeing many key pieces from last year’s team graduate. “I’m proud of these guys
because it’s two different groups, and that’s kind of the neat thing to me,” head coach Darren Orel said. “We had two pretty special athletes last year with Joe [Becht] and Zach [Taylor], and it’s hard to replace those guys, but we’ve got guys like Joe LaCivita that has stepped up, Zack Radde at first base has had a tremendous year, and Zack Jones is 9-0. I expected him good things out of him, but 9-0? That’s a huge plus.” Orel said this year’s run through the conference might have been made more difficult since there was more chatter about the Mustangs repeating the feat from the get-go. There were also some close calls along the way, including a tight series against Willowbrook and a 12-11 win against Hinsdale South that could have gone either way. “Sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don’t,” Orel said. “In the Gold games the last couple years we’ve had some things go our way and we’ve done some good things, too. We feel we’ve been fortunate.” Oriente and Orel each pointed to similarities between last year’s team and this year’s squad. Orel pointed to strong pitching, this year provided by the likes of Jones, Peter Hamot, Danny Kasher, Tyler McCulloch and Ryan Taylor. Oriente said the Mustangs’ vocal bench was a key. “The fire on the bench is everything,” Oriente said. “When we bring that energy everyday, it makes it easier.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA High school softball teams are about to start the postseason with one goal in mind – get to the EastSide Centre in East Peoria for the state finals. Here’s the outlook for Benet, Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South.
Benet
Regional: Plainfield East Sectional: Downers Grove South
Sectional seed: No. 11 First game: 4:30 p.m. May 27 vs. No. 5 Plainfield East
Outlook: After dominating teams in the regular season in recent years, the Redwings have struggled to a 14-15 mark this year as of May 18. The overall results were somewhat offset by a 10-9 mark in the ultra competitive East Suburban Catholic Conference. Benet faces regional host Plainfield East to start the
a roll as they go for their third straight Class 4A regional title. Montini, Trinity and Oak Park-River Forest are among the quality wins for North so far this season, and it also has a 7-5 win against Neuqua Valley to its credit. Emma Varsbergs, Kaylee Newstrom, Savannah Rodriguez and Jaclyn Pasakarnis are all double-digit RBI producers, and the Trojans will rely on their offense and the pitching of Rodriguez and Megan Ramsden in the playoffs. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Should North top Neuqua Downers Grove South’s Nicole Bowman fields a hit down the right again, No. 5 seed and regionfield line April 28 in a game against Willowbrook. The Mustangs have al host Plainfield North could cruised in the regular season and hope to keep it going in the playoffs. wait in the regional final on May 30.
Outlook: The Mustangs have been one of the hottest teams around all season compiling a 25-0 record as of May 18 and winning many of their game by the 10-run mercy rule. A combination of strong pitching from Caroline Hedgcock and Payton Buresch and a stacked lineup that includes heavy hitters like Hedgcock, Kristin Lea, Megan LoBianco, Zahrya McFarland and Nicole Bowman has fueled the team all season. South is the favorite to win the regional, which would mean a showdown against No. 8 seed Plainfield North or No. 10 Bolingbrook in the May 30 title game. The other top seeds in the sectional are West AuClass 4A postseason, and with South rora, Waubonsie Valley and Downers Grove South a win would likely face No. 4 Sectional seed: No. 4 Downers Grove North. Benet, DGN, DGS earn top-five postseason seeds SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The high school baseball regular season is winding down and the first pitches of the postseason are about to be thrown as teams look to go on a winning streak that culminates in a state title. Here’s the playoff outlook for Benet, Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South.

East Aurora Outlook: The Trojans had a 22-10 record entering play on May 18 and were sitting in second place in the West Suburban Silver, a half game up on Hinsdale Central. The way the seeds line up, the Red Devils would be the likely first round regional foe when the playoffs begin next week. If that is the matchup that comes to be, North has to like its chances. After finishing the Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com regular season on May 25, the Downers Grove North’s Paul Cappetta eyes a pickoff throw from the Trojans will have time to rest pitcher May 1 in a game against Lyons Township. Sectional: Romeoville Sectional seed: No. 1 First game: 4:30 p.m. May 27 vs.
No. 16 Hinsdale South/No. 17 Bolingbrook
Outlook: The Mustangs were on the doorstep of a state finals berth last season before falling in a supersectional game. Despite losing a lot of firepower from that team, South put together another strong season that included defending its West Suburban Gold title. After closing the regular season against Sandburg on May 23, South has a three days off before playing a regional semifinal against either Bolingbrook or Hinsdale South. The Mustangs swept Hinsdale South in a WSG series earlier this season. A regional semi win will send South to the championship game on May 30 against either Yorkville or Plainfield East.

Downers Grove North Sophomore | Track Why Moravec was selected: Moravec earned state meet berths in each of her three events at North’s Class 3A sectional meet May 14. The sectional track meet could be considered the most important meet of the season for many athletes since the results of the sectional determine state meet berths. Emma Moravec survived the pressure situation of the sectional and made it to state in all three of her events, which included the open 800-meter run and as part of the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Moravec, the Sears Appliance & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about her sectional meet, why North’s 4x800 relay is so successful and how previous state meet experience will help her this season.

Rossi: What are your thoughts on your sectional meet? Moravec: I was really
ly going to build on my experience from last year. State was really crazy with the stands and all the fans.
Rossi: It seems like North’s 4x800 relay has been a good relay for a long time. What makes it so successful? Moravec: Every year we
