DOWNERS GROVE – More than 131 artists from across the country and around the globe filled Main and Curtiss streets downtown Saturday and Sunday for the 38th annual Downtown Downers Grove Art Festival. The festival featured a beer and wine tent for the first time this year, joining the live music stage. To be included in the festival, artists submit work to a panel of judges who decided who made the cut. The field included two from Downers Grove this year, including painter Lisa Domaszewicz and photographer Jessica Cepele.

emcmenamin@shamwedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – When Downers Grove native Mike Sale tees off Friday for more than 2,500 holes of disc golf he plans to play in 24 hours, it will be for more than just reclaiming his world record. The University of California, Santa Barbara, junior is trying to raise money and awareness for the victims of the school shooting that killed six people and injured 13 others near the campus last spring. “It flipped everyone around, it was no longer a happy place to be,” he said. “Everybody was depressed and sad. It felt like (everyone) was scared to leave the house. And if this could happen here, could this happen again? Could someone else snap?” The incident had a profound impact on Sale and his classmates, he said, inspiring him to do something for the victims,, so what better than what he does best – disc golf.

The 20-year-old finished second in the 2013 Individual National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship, founded his college disc golf club and previously held the Guinness Book of World Records title for most holes played in 24 hours – 1,310. The feat involved walking about 78 miles in 24 hours, Sale said, in addition to about 7 cumulative miles on a bike that

he’d ride the 400 feet between the ninth and first holes each time he completed the course. “It’s pretty ridiculous,” he said. “I couldn’t walk for two days after that last attempt.” The record was ultimately bested three times, with the current record standing at 1,929 holes. “I had it in my head that I wanted to break the record again,” he said. “But it wasn’t

until the week after (the shooting) that it was going to be my focus to try and raise money.” Sale has dedicated his summer to the task – his college classes don’t start until October – lining up several disc golf sponsors for the event, organizing a doubles tournament to take place the same day and launching a fundraiser page at gofundme.com/d99y6o. Between the Go Fund Me site, private donations and the sponsorships, he’s reached about $2,000 of his $2,500 fundraising goal, he said. For the event, Sale will travel with friends to the Blockhouse Disc Golf and Country Club in Spotsylvania, Va. It’s the shortest course he could find that qualifies for the record, and Sale thinks he should be able to get to at least

2,500 holes with the reduced walking time. The course also has the added benefit of being designed for play at night with lighted holes. Still, it will be an endurance test, and he plans to bring multiple pairs of shoes to ward off blisters. Sale said he started playing the sport around the time he got his driver’s license, fortuitous timing that allowed him to drive and play as many courses as he could find. He likes the pressure of individual sports, he said, the success or failure riding on his own shoulders. He also believes the wooded courses offer a meditative quality. “When you’re playing a course and there’s no one else around, the rest of the world falls away and you don’t have to worry about anything but disc golf,” he said. Like many niche sports, a community and subculture that has grown up around it as well. “The people are great,” he said “I can’t get away from it.”

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council decided not to amend the new sign ordnance Sept. 2 to allow business signs facing railroad tracks. The issue came to light last month when Leibundguth Moving and Storage owner Bob Patterson appealed to the council to allow the more than 80-year-old, hand-painted sign to remain on the back of his building. The sign is a large source of customers for his business, he said, because of the thousands of Metra passengers that read it every day during their commute. The new sign ordinance only allows business signs to face drivable right-of-ways, like roads, and not train tracks, like the Metra/BNSF line that runs behind his business. Commissioner David Olsen pushed for a text amendment in the code to allow for signs facing the tracks but could not get a “second” at the meeting to bring the item to a vote. Mayor Martin Tully voiced approval for the idea, but code requires a commissioner, not the mayor, to give the “second.” If the council had voted in favor, it would have gone back to village staff for drafting and then back to council for a final vote. “I continue to think that it makes sense that a drivable right-of-way and a railroad right-of-way receive the same treatment,” Tully said. In the end, even if the council did allow signs to face the tracks, the Leibundguth sign likely would have had to come down because the village’s new ordinance also doesn’t allow painted wall signs outside of downtown. Its sign also was too big for the new ordinance. Olsen said the amendment was a common-sense change to what had previously been described as an oversight in the ordinance, whether or not it allowed Leibundguth to keep their sign. “I think that the message that we would be sending by moving this through the process is a message of ‘we are listening to the community,’” he said.

Olsen began his remarks with general concern for the sign ordinance’s impact on business. “I think the message to the business community over the past few months has not been positive,” he said. “If you talk to folks involved with economic development, they will say the sign ordinance has become an issue for Downers Grove.” Olsen also pointed to Fry’s Electronics, which is not allowed to have a large sign despite being nearly surrounded by two interstates. Leibundguth was the last business remaining with a wall facing the tracks to not remove their signage, according to village staff. Villagewide, about 94 percent of properties have come into compliance with the ordinance, following a nine-year grace period that ended this spring. Commissioners largely cited fairness to other businesses as their reason not to amend the ordinance. “I emphasize with the plight of a small-business owner having a sign that he claims generates leads, I can appreciate that,” Commissioner Becky Rheintgen said. “I also understand the monitory value of good advertising. And I don’t necessarily disagree that a sign shouldn’t be on a railroad right-of-way. I think we’ve had lots of business that have been impacted, and they have been going through the (zoning board of appeals). “I don’t know if it’s fair to the people who are following the process to create a new process just because (Leibundguth) asked us.” Nearly all business that have petitioned the zoning board to keep their signs have been declined, including Best Buy, Fry’s, Kohl’s, Bohemian Garden Restaurant and others. Commissioners Geoff Neustadt and Greg Hose both said they would favor a comprehensive review of the ordinance once it’s received 100 percent compliance. “If there are changes that need to be made, let’s look at them, but let’s do them in a holistic approach,” Hose said.

A grass-roots effort led by resident Tom Nybo began this summer when he noticed the mansion at 942 Maple Ave. was for sale by an Indiana bank and marketed as a “prime development parcel,” along with the house next door. According to emails sent and received between village staff and Kuo Diedrich Architects last month, a potential buyer is interested in building condos on the two lots. The emails were retrieved via a Freedom of Information Act Request filed with the village by the Pierce Downer’s Heri-

Edwards, a prominent early Downers Grove businessman. He founded the first bank in the village in 1892, according to Downers Grove Museum volunteer Carol Wandschneider, and the house also was the first in town to have running water. Though its last use was as office space, a peak through the windows shows its hardwood floors, molding and built-ins are still intact. Attorney Theresa Beran Kulat formerly worked in the building, and spoke at the meeting about the mansion’s solid repair and otherwise healthy condition.

Fishel Park heats up with second annual Chilympics event The Downers Grove Park District is excited to host the Chilympics Chili Cook-off for its second year from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Fishel Park in downtown Downers Grove. Almost three years have passed since John Wilson was arrested for the murder of Kelli O’Laughlin. Why? The police had their reports finished the day he was charged. The defense gets all their copies within a month or two, then they investigate. Frivolous motions, month after month. Why does any judge allow this? Midwestern University expands health fair By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Visitors to Midwestern University’s annual health fair next month can get a variety of free screenings and a flu shot, but organizers hope this year’s expanded offerings also will provide an interactive experience and yield a well-rounded understanding of healthy choices. The student-led, free health fair Oct. 4 is ramping up this year and will be in the Downers Grove Park District’s Recreational Center for the first time to accommodate the longer list of booths and activities. Guests who visit each booth can win prizes, event coordinator and second-year pharmacy student Jan Kum said, and the event will include a children’s area with activities and games. “We’re creating a family friendly event,” she said. “We have one entire section of the Park District gym dedicated to children’s health. “This year, it’s activity-oriented – it’s not going to be just a passive lookand-see. We’re not just going have a poster board and have students stand around and explain something. It’s going to have an interactive component.” The Downers Grove police and fire departments are also are participating, as well as the public library. Guests ages 18 and older can get a free flu shot on a first-come, first-served basis, and screenings include hearing, BMI, glucose level and others. puter help desk and media lab complete the rearrangement of adult and teen services, according to Doornbos. “We had drawings and saw the plans, but really it has exceeded our expectations to see it in real life,” library board president Kathleen DiCola said. “We are really excited about it.” Library officials said the renovation will modernize the library, attract younger patrons and create collaborative space, among other improvements. “The space is inviting, and the comment we hear over and over from staff and patrons is how much bigger it (feels),” DiCola said. “It does have a nice, open feel to it.” DiCola said she has noticed increased use of the new Mouse Cafe and pointed to several other improvements to the children’s service area that appear to be positively received. New, front-facing shelving for the picture books allow the youngest patrons to browse by cover, organized by topic, as opposed to by author. About $2.4 million in funding, which was the original total cost, came from the library. The remaining $200,000 came from a grant from the Downers Grove Public Library Foundation, a separate, charitable organization. The library used reserves and operating funds to pay for its portion and did not borrow or increase property taxes for the renovation. “My expectations have been met and exceeded,” Ashton said. “The functionality and appearance and atmosphere of the building, top to bottom, look like a great success to me. We’ll see how some of the things actually work in practice.”

Good things come on small plates at Emilio’s HILLSIDE – Whether it’s a romantic date for two or a meal with friends and family, it’s all about sharing when it comes to dining on tapas, the “small plates” that originated in Spain and went on to deliciously infiltrate other cuisines. It’s a pure pleasure to go back to one of the region’s original purveyors: Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside. We dropped by late on a Saturday afternoon before the restaurant filled, and opted for a table on the flower-ringed patio, where retractable awnings are available to counter any unwanted sun or rain. Lightly falling water from a lion’s-head fountain helped set the mood, with soft Spanish music providing a subliminal dance beat. The indoor seating, which includes a bar, is an attractively escapist setting of rustic walls adorned with intricate tile patterns and murals of Spanish scenes. While we perused a menu traditionally divided between offerings of cold (fria) and hot (caliente) tapas, and varieties of the famous specialty paella – a saffron-infused rice typically featuring seafood – our helpful server brought a complimentary plate of a Spanish ham spread on crusty bread garnished with baby lettuces. She filled us in on the day’s specials and made welcome recommendations as we pro-

It was apparent from the nearby conversations between servers and guests that a lot of happy regulars were on hand. We couldn’t resist ordering our go-to tapa: bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter sauce. The dish was exceptional, featuring dates that were unusually plump, sweet and velvety. Add the applewood smoked bacon and the delicate red pepper sauce counterpoint, and it’s a standout. We used the bread basket offerings to sop up every last drop. Another tradition my companion couldn’t resist is the garlic potato salad, not for the faint of heart when it comes to the generous chopped cloves. With a short tower of clean plates at the ready, we tried something new to us: grilled black Angus with sauteed

oyster and shiitake mushrooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce. The beef was tender, flavorful and cooked medium rare exactly to order. It paired well with a Spanish version of home fries and the zesty sauce made with cava, Spain’s answer to Champagne. We capped the meal with a delectable cold tapa of roasted eggplant, pear tomato and green onion, accented with piquant goat cheese and grilled shrimp with a balsamic vinaigrette. The mild eggplant dominated the dish, and provided a fresh veggie spread for toast points. Service throughout our meal was wonderful, with water glasses kept full and plates whisked away in anticipation of the next arrival. To keep in mind for a future visit, flamenco performances are featured peri-

odically, and the restaurant offers a gluten-free menu. We hadn’t left enough room to try any of the desserts, which range from Callebaut bittersweet chocolate terrine with raspberry sauce to Flan de Caramelo to a cheese plate with local honeycomb, Spanish quince, figs and Spanish Marcona almonds. However, we did indulge in a superb cappuccino, rich in creamy flavor and froth, that was prepared, our server told us, from organic, free trade beans. It was a perfect ending to a relaxed, savory meal.

It’s official: Emery’s 1st draft was poor If the Bears present is shaky, the future very well could be scary Did the Chicago Bears run into a better team in their opening day disappointment versus the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field, or was it just another step in the “process” that GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman reference so often? I suspect it was the latter, which isn’t necessarily good news, but minimally tells us we’re just going to have to hang on for a few more weeks before we really know what we’ve got in these Chicago Bears. If in fact the Bears just aren’t as good as the Buffalo Bills, then Emery and Trestman have a big problem on their hands. The Bills aren’t a bad team, but at best they are one of a number of average or mediocre teams in the NFL that are going nowhere fast. That then could mean that the Monsters of the Midway are just a bad football team. Like I said, I’m not ready to write off this year’s Bears, and I really don’t think you should either. But even if these guys

According to a study by Philly.com, the Bears are the third oldest team in the NFL today, and their starting defense is definitely the oldest. The future of any NFL team is based on how it drafts and scouts college talent. The reason these Bears are so old is a number of years of bad drafting by Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith. Now I’m sure you’re all thinking no news flash there, but it is time to start wondering if Emery and Trestman have that trend turned. It is now time to officially declare Emery’s first draft as the Bears general manager as disappointing to poor. Yes, Alshon Jeffery is a great addition to this team and possibly even a building

Unfortunately, that’s it. Shea McClellin continues to receive chances and to disappoint. He and Isaiah Frey on the practice squad are all that remain from that group. Even if McClellin becomes a serviceable starter, that’s just not enough from an entire draft class. The Bears have Kyle Long, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jordan Mills, Cornelius Washington, Marquess Wilson and Demontre Hurst to show for Emery’s sophomore class. It is at least 16 weeks too early to grade this group

or form any final conclusions about the long-term prospects of any of these prospects other than to say Kyle Long looks like another potential building block for the future. But is it fair to ask what your expectations are for any or all of Long’s classmates? A few more serviceable to better-than-average NFL players? If that is in fact how it turns out, once again Emery and company just have to do better. There are 10 drafted rookies or undrafted rookie free agents on this year’s final 53, the same number as the Bears kept last year. That is a nice number, but the question we need to ask is, is that because the talent is so exciting, or the talent they had to beat out to make the team was uninspiring? What we can say for sure is if this year’s crop of Bears rookies don’t prove to be better than the first two groups Emery compiled, the franchise is in some serious jeopardy.

What is interesting is Emery has proven to have a very good eye for veteran talent. And he seems to work veteran free agency very well. But by itself, that is a one-way ticket to average. Counting on veteran free agents to contend will almost always lead to salary cap issues, a lack of depth up and down your roster and perhaps some number of very good players but a certain lack of star power. There is enough talent on this 2014 Bears roster for this team to be a playoff contender, even after the embarrassing loss to Buffalo. But that’s only if this group can stay healthy and get itself focused on stopping the run. But if this 2014 rookie class doesn’t turn out to be the best the Bears have had since 2003, the last good draft this club had, and the next couple of drafts aren’t better than that, Bears fans had best start preparing for a very long dry spell before their club is ready to contend again.

Game breakdown

DARIEN – Zach Hogan was a force to be reckoned with during Friday’s football game against Hinsdale South. The Downers Grove North junior defensive lineman had a pair of sacks, several other tackles and a slew of hard hits, but after a 6-0 loss against the Hornets, Hogan said he and his teammates still have room for improvement. “We need to get our hustle up, do a little more conditioning and have more intensity when we come back out,” Hogan said. It’s hard to imagine Hogan and his teammates on defense could have done much more. By and large, North held Hinsdale South in check. The Hornets’ touchdown came after the Trojans fumbled the ball deep in their own territory. South got the ball on the 8-yard line and punched it in from the 5-yard line soon after. “We turned the ball over on the 5, and there you have it,” North head coach John Wander said. “That was the difference in the game. They played very hard and made some good plays against us. They capitalized on a turnover and I don’t think they turned the ball over. That’s how it goes.” South’s score was the first time in the game either team had entered the red zone. The Trojans (1-1) drove to the Hornets’ 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over on downs. They got to the 25-yard line later in the fourth and had that drive cut short by Robert Hall’s interception for Hinsdale South. “It was back and forth, and in football a lot of times in close games it comes down to turnovers and penalties,” South head coach Mike Barry said. “We had the penalties and they had the turnovers, but it worked out on our behalf. Benet football wins after long road trip, weather delay

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA O’FALLON – What was already a long road trip to suburban St. Louis for Benet’s football team was made even longer when Friday night’s game against O’Fallon was suspended and resumed Saturday morning. Luckily for the Redwings, the trip was well worth it as they returned home with a 24-10 victory against the Panthers. The win pushed Benet’s record to 2-0 as the squad gets set to start East Suburban Catholic Conference play Friday. At the end of the first quarter, Benet led 7-0, but O’Fallon crept back to within 10-7 at halftime. One touchdown each in the third and fourth quarters propelled the Redwings and the defense made it stand up by allowing just a fourth-quarter field goal for the hosts. Sophomore starting quarterback Jack Sznajder notched his first passing touchdown at the varsity level as he connected with older brother Brad Sznajder. Brad Sznajder ran for 136 yards and

For Downers Grove South, it was the stage on which a memorable comeback took place. A touchdown with two seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and the Mustangs won 28-27 against Proviso West in a West Suburban Conference crossover game Friday night. “We found a way to get it done,” South head coach Mark Molinari said. Outlook: If the early results are any indication, the Mustangs are primed to improve on 2013’s results. In their first three games, they surrendered one goal and blanked both Fremd and Hinsdale Central as they jumped out to a 2-0-1 record. “At this point in the season, I have been happy with the way we have defended,” head coach Jon Stapleton said. “I also feel we have demonstrated a lot of depth at several positions. It seems every night someone new has made a big contribution, which will only make our team stronger as the season goes along.” In Eric Diaz, South possesses a player who was an Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-sectional player a year ago and is a force at both ends of the field. Diaz provides plenty of scoring punch, but as the season goes on Stapleton will be looking for more players to figure into the attack. “We spent a lot of our preseason on defending so as a result we are probably a little behind in being creative in the final third of the field,” the coach said. “As the season continues I expect we will take positive strides in that area.”

Outlook: As always, the Redwings have high expectations. Kyle Kenagy is back in the fold at forward after earning several postseason accolades last year, including East Suburban Catholic all-conference, ESCC offensive co-Player of the Year, and Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association allstate. Konrad Bayer, Richard Michalik and Daniel Morefield are back with the varsity. “All are returning players and all played big minutes last year,” Benet head coach Sean Wesley said. “We are dangerous in transition with lots of pace and we are able to score goals.” Benet also has the ability to stop goals from being scored with Bayer in net, though three of the four defenders in front of him are new. So far that has not been an issue as the Redwings won their first three games of the season via shutout. “We may be young but we expect to do well in the Best of the West tournament, win conference and make a run towards the state title at the end of the year,” Wesley said.
