ELMHURST – Elmhurst residents are getting a say in their city’s vision for the future. The consultants hired by the city to guide its strategic planning process wrapped up a series of nine meetings with residents with two final open house sessions Monday. The sessions have been a way to gather residents’ input regarding Elmhurst’s strengths, limitations and opportunities for growth as part of the process to develop a comprehensive plan. Gregory Kuhn with Sikich LLP led the 4 p.m. session, posing the 13 residents in attendance with various questions, from what they would tell other people about Elmhurst to what they think is a hidden asset of the city. “I would describe the community as a big suburban community with a small-town feel,” resident Mike LoCicero said Monday. Residents also shared what they believe should top the city’s lists of short-

Resident Tamara Brenner said she’d like to see Elmhurst be more aware of the impacts of its decisions regarding developments. “I don’t see where we’re looking at what the potential consequences are,” Brenner said. She said she also thinks officials should stop granting zoning variations for developers until a plan is developed that makes variations unnecessary, a goal that was echoed by other community members at the meeting as well. Other suggested goals included repairing streets, fixing flooding issues and providing full funding for the Elmhurst Historical Museum. The museum had part of its funding cut by the city earlier this year. However, the City Council plans to reinstate
the funds if the museum completes its strategic plan and implements it by June 1. Claire Cronin, a 55-year resident of Elmhurst, expressed concerns about some businesses the city has lost from its downtown and urged residents to shop at local businesses. “We have got to support the downtown,” Cronin said. One hidden asset expressed by residents at the meeting was the people of Elmhurst themselves. “Every time we call out to the community for young people to collect shoes, for older people to help children across the street ... any of those activites, we get enormous responses, so the entire hidden asset is the volunteer spirit of this community,” resident Rich Rosenberg said. Sikich LLP now will compile the data it’s collected from residents and create a summary to provide to Elmhurst’s elected officials and senior staff before they attend a planning retreat in late February, where they will consider residential input and begin developing goals, Kuhn said.

editorial@mysuburbalife.com Georgianna Clements knows firsthand that families of chronically ill children can often feel like they’re “living in a bubble.” “It takes me back to how I felt with my daughter,” the lifelong Villa Park resident said. “All you want to do is take care of your kid, and you have no idea how you’re going to make that happen. If I could take a little bit of that stress away, I could make their whole family life better and let some happiness in.” Clements created Miracles from Mia in 2006, two years after her daughter Mia died unexpectedly in her sleep at 17 months old. Mia was born with bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney disease and was awaiting a kidney transplant. The nonprofit organization provides financial and emotional support to Illinois families who are caring for ill or disabled children. “People are so grateful, but I do it for my daughter, to honor her memory,” Clements said. Every year, the Cupid’s Kisses gala raises money for Miracles from Mia. This year’s event will be Feb. 7 at Diplomat West in Elmhurst. The evening features food, drinks, music and dancing, as well as a silent auction and raffle.
For information about Miracles from Mia, visit miraclesfrommia.org.

and older, kids younger than 10 are free Clements said all the proceeds from the event will go directly to this year’s recipients. “The money can be used for anything, as long as it helps the child in some way,” she said. “It can be used for therapy, medical bills, wheelchairs, ramps. Once the money leaves my hand, I know I’ve done a good thing.” Clements said the organization has helped 25 children, mostly from the western suburbs, since its beginning, amounting to more than $176,000 in support. She said the diagnoses of the children have varied from cancer to muscular dystrophy to spina bifida and various

chromosomal disorders. The Scafidi family of Westmont is one of two recipient families this year. Their 14-month-old son, Paolo, had a stroke at 8 months and has had several seizures. His mother, Renee, said he now has occupational, speech and physical therapy five days a week. She said the money from Miracles from Mia will be used to pay Paolo’s medical bills. The family applied for assistance in December and learned they were chosen in early January. “It’s been so hard,” Scafidi said. “Miracles from Mia has been a godsend. We were getting to the point of wondering what we were going to do, and this is almost like a miracle.” She said the emotional support she’s received from Clements and the community has been humbling. “It’s comforting to talk to Georgianna. What she does is amazing,” Scafidi said. “This has been so traumatic for us, but people let us know they were there. So many friends and family have reached out and helped us in so many ways.” Lombard resident Nicole Tyszkiewicz’s daughter, McKenna, 7, was born with several disabilities and requires 24-hour care. Her family received help from the organization in 2009. She said the most important part of
Miracles from Mia isn’t the check. “It’s more about the emotional support,” Tyszkiewicz said. “It’s just somebody saying, ‘We care.’ Georgianna knew what I was going through, and she made sure we didn’t feel alone. You can’t do this alone. You need to lean on others, and Georgianna understands that.” Matt Adamczyk of Villa Park said he is looking forward to attending this year’s Cupid’s Kisses. His 7-year-old son, Sebastian, has Down syndrome, and his family was a recipient at the 2013 gala. Adamczyk said he hopes Miracles from Mia continues to grow so it can help more families like his. “There are a lot of families in our area with kids who have special needs,” he said. “We need to get the word out that there are families who need assistance, and there are kids who benefit from that assistance in many ways.” Clements said there were about 450 people at Cupid’s Kisses last year, and she is hoping for the same number – or more – this year. She said she and the Miracles from Mia board have worked very hard planning the event and everything they’ve done is “from the heart.” “It makes us feel good to do it,” Clements said. “If Mia’s watching, I hope she thinks we’re doing a good thing, and that she’s proud of us.”

6 Public, legislators denounce COD president’s $760,000 buyout By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com An estimated 400 members of the public attended Wednesday’s special College of DuPage Board of Trustees meeting to air their grievances about the school president’s severance payment. The board voted – for the second time – to approve the $762,000 in severance for college President Robert Breuder’s retirement. Trustees voted 6-1 in favor of the buyout, with Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton as the lone dissenter. Wednesday’s meeting was the board’s second in less than a week to discuss the retirement package, and it was called to clarify a procedural motion regarding whether the board should have formally closed debate before voting on the severance during the first meeting Jan. 22. In the end, the vote remained the same, with trustees approving an addendum to Breuder’s contract allowing him to retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. In addition, Breuder will receive a $762,867.77 lump-sum payment, according to the board-approved contract provisions. The college also will name its new Homeland Security Education
Center after him. Trustees indicated their hands were tied on the buyout because of how previous boards had structured Breuder’s contract. “In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have severance packages,” Trustee Kim Savage said. “But we do have a contract that, if we end the contract, we owe him the balance of the contract.” Chairwoman Erin Birt said the board quantified 1½ years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to an agreement on the amount of money for the severance pay. “I think every single person around this table worked very hard at this,” Birt said. That didn’t stop the public from attending the meeting in droves to voice their disapproval. In all, about 400 people came, with 75 speaking during a public comment session that ran for more than three hours. Adam Andrzejewski, founder of Elmhurst-based watchdog group For The Good of Illinois, which has been working to make details of Breuder’s contract public, said the board violated state law by not providing contract specifics to taxpayers prior to voting Jan. 22. “This board admits that it secretly negotiated Dr. Breuder’s severance
agreement for nine months, then didn’t recite the details into the record before last Thursday’s public vote,” he said. “That violated the Open Meetings Act.” Andrzejewski and the Edgar County Watchdogs have filed suit against the college for the alleged violation. Mary Kranz, a former trustee at the college who served from 1995 to 2001, urged the board not to vote for the severance pay because of what it would do to the community. “The taxpayers of DuPage County cannot afford this tax burden,” she said. West Chicago resident Louise Handel, who is an alumna of the college, said she didn’t like that the trustees shifted the blame. “I’m kind of offended and insulted when I hear board members blame previous boards,” she said. “You don’t just get to say, ‘Pass, that wasn’t me.’” State legislators even took time to address the trustees. Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, said the board politicians in Springfield already are talking about what’s going on at the college. “What you have done as a board contributes to the bad reputation Illinois has with corruption,” she said. Late last week, Ives announced she would ask the state Auditor General to audit the state funding the college has
received during the past three fiscal years. She said she wouldn’t hesitate pulling $762,000 from the college’s state funding as a result of Breuder’s buyout. Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, also criticized the board for the amount of the severance payment. “This is outrageous. There is no precedent for this in a community college setting in Illinois,” Breen said. “I hate to say this, but this board has betrayed the trust of this community.” Breuder refused to comment on his retirement and the proceedings surrounding it. Several members of the public were upset Breuder would be the Homeland Security Education Center’s namesake, a decision the board voted in favor of in May 2013. Area residents urged the board to reconsider and name it after Staff Sgt. Robert Miller, a Wheaton resident who fought in Afghanistan and died protecting his fellow soldiers. He received the Medal of Honor in 2008. Kirk Allen of the Edgar County Watchdogs said Miller would be a much more appropriate choice because he “paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.” The next scheduled board meeting is Feb. 19.

Looking at when babies, children and teenagers should be immunized It’s important to keep your children current on their vaccinations to help protect them, your community and schools from outbreaks of disease. Immunizations help protect infants, children and adults against many infections that used to be much more common. Many of these infections, such as whooping cough and meningitis, can cause serious or COMMUNITY life-threatening illnesses.
VOICE Dr. John Benages
Newborns through age 6:
• DTaP: Protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) • HepB: Protects against hepatitis B • RV: Protects against rotavirus • Hib: Protects against Haemophilus influenza type b • PCV: Protects against pneumococcus • IPV: Protects against polio • MMR: Combines protection against measles, mumps and rubella • Varicella: Protects against chickenpox • HepA: Protects against hepatitis A
Age 7 to 18: • TDaP: Preteens and teens need a booster for the DTaP vaccine received in childhood. • MCV4: The meningococcal conjugate vaccine protects against some of the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease, such as meningitis or sepsis (bloodstream infection). MCV4 is recommended for all preteens at age 11 or 12. A booster shot is recommended for teens at age 16 to continue protection when their risk for meningococcal disease is highest. If a teenager missed getting the vaccine altogether, they should ask the doctor about getting it before moving into a college dorm or military barracks. • HPV: protects against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the diseases that are caused by HPV. HPV vaccination is recommended for preteen girls and boys at age 11 or 12 years. Preteens and teens should get all three doses of an HPV vaccine long before their first sexual contact.
All ages: • Flu: Everyone 6 months of age and older should get an annual flu vaccine in the fall or as soon as it is available each year.

OUR VIEW
Breuder’s windfall part of a pattern of poor leadership In a state with budgets in disarray, with the biggest pension crisis in the nation, with one governor in prison for corruption and another just recently released, it’s pretty tough to stomach Robert Breuder’s $760,000 payoff to retire early as College of DuPage president. At $142 per credit hour, a full-time student at College of DuPage taking 15 credit hours of classes can expect to pay $6,390 in tuition and fees alone. So Breuder’s windfall could pay for 118 students to go to school for a year, tuition free. Beyond the money itself, there’s the problem of what it represents. With this deal, which the College of DuPage trustees have approved twice now, Breuder gets to walk away from this job proud of all his achievements, convinced his tenure was a magnificent success, marred only by some meaningless unpleasantness at the very end. Oh, and he gets a building named after him. But what we don’t know is how many of those achievements and grand successes are empty. Breuder’s surprise retirement has come on the heels of the release of an email that showed the kind of dirty politics he’s capable of. He’s been exposed as just another Illinois charlatan, the kind of leader who has no qualms about pointing one way and then running the other. Breuder’s email to the board, which leaked in July, shows him proposing to deceive the state by making a planned project more politically attractive in order to wrangle $20 million in funding that the college was owed. In the email, Breuder expressed frustration over dealing with the governor’s office to free up the $20 million and said he wanted the board to convey the need for a teaching and learning facility as a means to obtain the money. “I have no problem with [board members

commenting on the need for a facility]; however, not being able to say how we would use the state’s money (perhaps no real need) could lessen our chances to break the money loose at this time (the political moon is rising),” Breuder said in the email. “A building that focuses on teaching and learning is politically attractive; more so than let’s say a student center, PE facility, etc.” Breuder also suggested getting the funding from the state and coming up with a plan of how to spend it at a later date. “There is also the option of telling the Governor we want the money, will bank it until we figure out how to use it and then building something,” Breuder said in the email. “Bottom line: I need some room to breathe on this matter so I can enhance the likelihood we get the $20 million soon.” The Chicago suburbs have seen something like this play out before. It was only in 2009 that McHenry County College up in Crystal Lake told their president, Walt Packard, his services were no longer needed. They decided they couldn’t fire him, though, and gave him another $200,000, plus benefits, for his trouble. Looking further downstate, when University of Illinois President Michael Hogan was fired in 2012 after just 20 months on the job – after succeeding another fired president – he was awarded a one-year, $285,100 “sabbatical” before he then returned as a history professor. Then these “leaders” go on to collect exorbitant pensions on top of the one-time piles of cash. As Illinois residents, as taxpayers in DuPage County, we can have no tolerance for these kinds of shenanigans anymore. We don’t want to hear that this is how things get done. Somehow, other states manage to get things accomplished without constantly resorting to dirty dealing. These payouts for failure have to stop.

Again, we have College of DuPage in the news and the stupidity of the Board of Trustees continues (except for one lone wolf who has integrity). What in the world are the trustees thinking? With the “no confidence” vote that was overwhelming, the trustees see fit to award [Robert] Breuder $762,000 in severance? Don’t the trustees have any backbone? The man should have been fired, not rewarded. There has been nothing but tension in the college since he arrived. Most of the faculty and students would love to see this man walked out in handcuffs instead of with money bags. It is also time the public did its homework before an election. There are seven trustees that should also be shown to the door. Wake up people!

Business experts ‘cautiously optimistic’ for 2015 economy By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com The million-dollar question always seems to ponder what the future will bring. Prosperity? Jobs? Hard questions with no easy or onesize-fits-all answer. A panel of experts tackled some of those difficult questions Tuesday during the Economic Forecast 2015 event hosted by Suburban Life Media. Keynote speaker John Quigley, president and CEO of Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, offered a mixed bag of news in his opening remarks to the more than 100 business and community members in attendance at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oak Brook Terrace. “I’ve lived in the western suburbs for almost 60 years,” Quigley said. “It’s always been a vibrant place to live. This is a great idea for a conference and great place to get business leaders together.” He offered snapshots of economic growth in 2014, including that the nation is experiencing the fastest job growth since 1999, interest rates remain at historic lows to help keep inflation rates in check, and the na-

A banker for 30 years, Richard Reichert, president and CEO of Community Bank of Elmhurst, has seen positive signs of the economy returning to life. “I am cautiously optimistic for 2015,” Reichert said. “I’ve seen a stronger economy, especially in east DuPage. We’ve seen some commercial customers make new investments in equipment and new product lines.” There also has been investment in Elmhurst through the use of a tax increment financing district in the north end of Elmhurst, anchored by a new grocery store and downtown development, he added. Theresa Schulz, president and managing broker of Schulz Properties Commercial Real Estate in Downers Grove,
responded to a question referencing the state of the commercial real estate industry. “What I’ve seen is a change in the big-box retailers,” Schulz said. “They have maxed out in the market place. ... The grocery stores made a major impact in 2014. ... We are so grateful for Caputo’s coming to the market and they brought a new element into the market.” Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president of True Value Company Chicago, felt a two-prong approach would be the best method when it came to e-commerce and how that affects brickand-mortar locations. “For folks shopping for products $500 or more, say a lawnmower in my world, 80 percent shop online prior to engaging with a brick-and-mortar store,” Ashenfelter said. “More important is that on average, those consumers spend 80 days shopping online before making a purchase.” Ashenfelter stressed that it is crucial to businesses to identify their brand by having a viable website that also is mobile for customers that are researching competitors websites while inside their store. The second approach is to consider
the different shopping patterns of Generation X, who tend to want experts to fix things, and Generation Y, who are interested in projects they will do themselves, he said. “These folks’ expectations are different and you have to market differently,” he added. In speaking to the skill set required for future employees who still are in college, Timothy Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies at Elmhurst College, cited a study from the Association of American College and Universities that asked employers what skill they would seek in an employee. “Ninety percent said the most important characteristics are soft skills: critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and the ability to work in teams,” Ricordati said. “The undergraduate major of that person is secondary to having those skills. That is eye opening.” Ultimately, for businesses in 2015, the future does look bright. “Falling unemployment, low fuel costs and low interest rates,” said Scott Magnesen, MPW Group, who helped sponsor the event. “We are not in a bad spot.”

(Johan Widmann cont’d) donate. Now came the question of who should receive all the loot he had collected. Johan’s extended family lives in Guatemala. He visits there annually with his immediate family and is all too familiar with the extent of the poverty there. He felt that there was no better place to donate his goods, then to the children in Guatemala. Today, Johan’s simple but extraordinary idea has blossomed into a full-ledged organization that he now calls, “Goals4All”. It has been in existence for almost six years now and every year, a different school in Guatemala is chosen to receive all of the equipment Johan gathers throughout the year. If Goals4All isn’t reason enough to recognize this ine fellow, you can add exceptional student, athlete, and accomplished pianist to the mix. I marvel at Johan’s humility, upstanding character and talent and am so proud to honor him.”

Fair expects to go on despite 300 building code vioations By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com
420 W.Army Trail Road, Bloomingdale Opens 8 a.m. on Friday, January 30! A new Goodwill Store & Donation Center is opening in your neighborhood. Be sure to stop in for AMAZING merchandise and values because at Goodwill, you can buy much more for much less!
The organizers of the DuPage County Fair said there is no threat to the continuation of this year’s event despite the revelation of more than 300 building code violations on its grounds – at least for now. The number came from a report released Jan. 23 by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin’s real estate assess-
ment task force in its assessment of the future use of the property. The goal of the task force was to evaluate the grounds to make sure they are used to their fullest potential and identify alternatives if necessary. The violations were declared after Wheaton and county inspectors went through more than a dozen buildings on the grounds in October, DuPage County Fair Association Treasurer

The report detailed several possible alternative uses for the property. County Board member Jim Healy, chairman of the county’s public works committee, said regardless of outcome, the county wanted to ensure it retained control of the land. “The one thing I know about land is that you can’t make more of it,” he said. “We are confined at the county to the footprint we have. ... I don’t want [someone] in 100 years to thumb back and say, ‘Those guys sold that property – too bad.’”

hosting so many other events. But safety remains the first priority, Healy said. McGuire said he looks forward to continuing the fair’s mission of educating and promoting the role of agriculture in the lives of the community. At the same time, he is not optimistic about the fair’s long-term future. “Our goal is to get to 2020 and have a big hurrah to say ‘thanks for your support’ and sign off,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll get a lease extension. The pressure has been on for 30 years to remove the fair from the grounds.”

A significant amount of the association’s budget stems from state money, Healy said, which could be in jeopardy. Healy estimated he and the rest of the committee would spend most of 2015 deciding the future of the grounds and working with the association to determine if it was worth investing money into keeping the grounds updated for the fair before its lease runs out in 2020. The report also expressed concern that the association was operating “beyond the original scope and intent of the lease” by

million – a big bill considering the association’s annual budget of about $1.6 million. However, McGuire said the association projected a much lower figure. He said he was confident the fairgrounds could quickly be brought up to code. “You’re hiring people to raise questions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all the questions are something,” he said. “Now we have to go through the process of defending some of our buildings and explore the costs of replacing parts if the city says we need to.”

Jim McGuire said. The nonprofit was informed of the violations Jan. 5 and given 90 days to take care of high-priority items in the buildings used year-round for the multitude of programs the fairgrounds host. Three days later, several buildings had been closed by the city of Wheaton, but the association had already done enough to have many reopened the same day, McGuire said, while others remain closed. The report estimated the fixes could cost upwards of $2

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK |
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Grade School
Catholic schools offer academic excellence and faith-filled education for students nationwide. National test scores, high school graduation rates, college attendance and other data show that Catholic schools frequently outperform schools in both the public and private sectors. While some Catholic schools are challenged by declining enrollments and school closures, the good news is that there is a strong demand and enthusiasm for Catholic schools - many have waiting lists admission and new schools are opening. Bien Trucha treats Glen Ellyn to a toda madre GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior. Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia. Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter. Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans. The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal. Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch. We also opted for the frijoles borrachos – drunken beans with pork belly, pico de gallo and Mexican beer – which

As the designated driver, I stuck with the nonalcoholic limonada, which was sweet and refreshing. Throughout the evening, the staff was kind, attentive and unintrusive – but a toda madre’s service really shone during dessert, when the flan
we had hoped to order was sold out, and the restaurant instead offered us a complimentary Carlota. When the plate arrived, we were glad to have taken them up on it. The blend of cookies, tequila crema and key lime curd was pure serenity, and paired deliciously with the americano I ordered – a strong cup of coffee with a delicate cocoa finish. York’s Jack Morrissey goes up for a shot Jan. 23 in a game against Hinsdale Central. The Dukes battled back from an early deficit to take a late lead before falling 50-48, though they defeated Proviso West the next day.
Dukes put toughness on display By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Trailing by double digits to one of the top teams in the state wasn’t in the game plan for York’s boys basketball team. But the Dukes displayed their resilience by mounting a big comeback against Hinsdale Central, one that ultimately fell just short in a 50-48 loss Jan. 23. The Dukes trailed 16-5 after making just one basket in the first quarter, but battled back to within 25-24 at the half and took a 48-45 lead late in the game. “You don’t want to dig yourself a hole against a team as good as Hinsdale Central, but I was proud of the way our guys battled back,” York head coach Vince Doran said. “We had every opportunity to win the game, and that’s the

They’re great kids and they played hard.” Central head coach Nick Latorre agreed with that assessment. “They’re good. They’re really scrappy,” Latorre said. “They play a style that allows them to stay with pretty much anybody, and [Jayvon] Thomas is really good. … They really played tough the entire game.” A day after losing the heartbreaker against Central, York was on the other side of a similar game when it defeated Proviso West 50-44 in overtime. With the win, York improved to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the West Suburban Silver conference.

Despite loss, York girls having superb season By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com HINSDALE – Jamie Kovatchis and her York teammates did an impressive job guarding Hinsdale Central star Gabrielle Rush on Monday night, holding the Princeton recruit to 16 points on 6-for-18 shooting. That wasn’t good enough to beat the host Red Devils, who pulled away late to win 62-53 and take over possession of second place in the West Suburban Silver. The reason was the performance of Rush’s teammates, who combined to make 16-of-29 shots. “They had some quality players that normally don’t do a lot of scoring who stepped up and made some shots in the second half,” York coach John Constable said. “When you make their non-stars beat you, then hats off to them, because I thought we did a pretty good job on Rush.” York senior Jamie Kovatchis drew the assignment of guarding Rush, who recently became Hinsdale Central’s career scoring leader with 2,104 points. “It wasn’t just me,” Kovatchis said. “I stay on her as best I can with my teammates helping over. That’s how we held her to so few points.” Kovatchis, who scored 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting, held Rush scoreless in the third quarter and converted a threepoint play with 4.9 seconds left in the frame to give the Dukes (15-6, 6-3) a 42-41 lead.

Jessica Bianchi’s layup pulled York within 58-53 with 21.8 ticks left, but Riley Burr made two free throws with 12 seconds left to ice it for Hinsdale Central. Paige Bareck scored 16 points for the Red Devils, while Grace Hartzman and Gilley Martinelli each had eight points. Megan Backman had 14 points to lead York, which is on pace to record its most wins since the 2002-03 team went 29-3. “It might be a surprise to a lot of people,” Constable said. “It’s not a surprise to me when you have seven seniors that play for each other, play for one common goal. Our seniors do a great job of working hard.” The Dukes face another stiff test on Friday when they travel to WSS leader Lyons Township (16-4, 8-0), but the loss against Central doesn’t take any of the luster off that match-up. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com “Definitely not,” Kovatchis said. “If anything it makes us want to work hard- York’s Jessica Bianchi (middle) tries to drive around Hinsdale Central’s Riley Burr on Monday. New players emerge as standouts each basketball season, from underclassmen getting their first taste of varsity ball to juniors and seniors making the most of increased playing time. Here is a list of some of the most impressive newcomers and improved returners on area girls basketball teams.
during her first two years at Montini, Wallace is now seeing a bigger role for the Broncos. She has broken into the starting lineup and is among the team’s leading scorers, contributing to one of the best teams in the state.
Megan Backman School: York Class: Junior Position: Guard Impact: York has a very senior-laden squad, but Backman has made a significant impact as a junior. The sharp-shooting guard is third on the team in scoring at eight points per game. Backman leads the team with 41 3-pointers made, shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.
Anjella Farmer
Josie Zabran School: Willowbrook Class: Junior Position: Forward Impact: Zabran joined Willowbrook’s varsity team late last season as a sophomore and made a big impact right away, so her strong play this winter is no surprise. Allison Zeilstra School: Timothy Christian Class: Sophomore Position: Guard Impact: The Trojans are built around tall interior players Kaitlyn Gehrke and Juliana Stremler, but guards like Zeilstra are responsible for giving the post players the ball in good situations. Not only has Zeilstra been able to do that, but she also has added some scoring for the Trojans in her first year on varsity.
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GREENSBORO, N.C. – Addison native Alexa Scimeca and her partner Christopher Knierim won the pairs competition at the 2015 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday. Scimeca and Knierim are first-time national champions, and their win Saturday qualifies them for the worlds, which will take place in Shanghai, Chi- Alexa na, in March. At the Scimeca nationals, which took place at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., Scimeca and Knierim posted the best score in the short program and in the free skate. The pair earned a score of 74.01 points in the short program on Thursday, which set an event record under the current scoring system which was put in place in 2004. They followed up with a score of 136.48 in Saturday’s free skate, which was also the best score of the day and set another personal best score. Scimeca and Knierim, who got engaged in April of 2014, finished more than 10 points ahead of the second place team of Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier. In 2013, Scimeca and Knierim placed second at nationals, but were fourth last year in an Olympic-qualifying year.
