ON THE COVER Elmhurst history author Virginia Stewart previews a new Elmhurst Historical Museum exhibit Nov. 13. Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com

New museum exhibit to tell Elmhurst’s story By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Elmhurst’s battle with flooding dates back a few decades, but it’s just one of the many topics the Elmhurst Historical Museum’s upcoming exhibit will address. “It’s that understanding of the past that enables people here to not only choose, but [also] to respect the people on the other side of the choice, and that doesn’t happen in a lot of places,” said Virginia Stewart, author of the award-winning book “Visionary: An Elmhurst Retrospective.” The new exhibit, “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst,” will open to the public Feb. 28, 2015, but the museum hosted a sneak peak last week. The product of a two-year Elmhurst Historical Foundation campaign called Visionary Voices with a goal of raising $300,000, the new permanent exhibit will replace the former Elmhurst exhibit on the museum’s second floor. “We’re going to build into our plan on a yearly basis to make sure this is a living, breathing thing,” Curator of Exhibits Lance Tawzer said of the exhibit, which will include interviews with Elmhurst residents, living photographs and a multi-user interactive piece of technology called a touch table cyclorama, in addition to artifacts from the museum’s extensive collection. “We’ve looked for people who can really help personalize the story,” Tawzer said. While the exhibit – larger than the previous – will allow visitors to have a cohesive experience through any of the multiple points of entry, the main entrance will greet visitors with 12-foot-wide living photographs from Elmhurst’s past. “We’ve decided to actually take a couple of images from our collection that we think are very iconic, and we’re going to bring them to life,” Tawzer said. With the help of Green Man Theatre actors, a photo of York Street and another of Wilder Park circa 1930 will be technologically enhanced to show movement. Banners will wave in the wind, lights may flash and people will move about in the images.

Elmhurst Historical Museum Curator of Exhibits Lance Tawzer discusses what the public can expect to see during a preview Nov. 13 of the new exhibit, “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst.”

Know more To learn more or get involved with the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, visit elmhurstheritagefoundation.org. “An exhibit is a social experience,” Stewart said, explaining the exhibit will allow groups of two to a few dozen to interact with the exhibit no matter individuals’ height, level of comprehension or life experience. Through technology, visitors will be invited to explore areas that interest them more through apps if they desire. “Our future plans are so that our museum will live in the world,” Tawzer said. He explained a vision for historical tours in areas of the city that would be supplemented with expansive historic background, which could be accessed by those looking for more information on particular buildings or subjects through technology. Stewart explained the way the community banded together in response to flooding in the 1980s demonstrates common themes of city involvement, civic commitment, a sense of individual responsibility and respect for previ-

She explained other contentious issues in Elmhurst’s history like the decision to become a city in 1910 were heavily debated. That particular decision resulted in an effective tie vote and a year of litigation before it was settled. “It shows you that the com-

munity can eventually come together despite serious dispute over what the right direction is,” Stewart said, explaining the ability to move forward as a single municipality after such debate is a unique quality. The museum’s director, Brian Bergheger, said he hopes visitors leave with a sense of Elmhurst that goes beyond names and dates, but gives them insight into Elmhurst’s defining characteristics that unite the community. “It’s not my town; it’s not my Elmhurst, but it’s our place,” Bergheger said.

The crew included the Contants’ three other children, Tristan, 14, Ella, 10, and Aidan, 6. “It was a lot more than I ever expected,” said Ronne, who has lived in the same Elmhurst home for the past 45 years. On Saturday, the crew of volunteers who ranged in age from 6 to 60 managed to complete yard work, clean gutters and repair Ronne’s back porch. Inside, they painted several rooms, ripped out carpet, installed new light fixtures and new flooring and gave the house a deep cleaning. “She would have loved to have been here Saturday,” Ronne said of his late wife. Ronne’s late wife, Sandy, met Anne Contant, John’s wife, at a Bible study group. When Sandy passed away two years ago, the Contants continued to stay in touch with Ronne, whom John describes as a grandfather-like figure to the Contant children. “We’ve been having Ed over every Thursday for dinner and welcoming him to the chaos of having four kids,” John Contant said. A little more than a year after John and Anne adopted their daughter Maeve from China, the couple has embarked on a mission to bring another child into the Contant family. “People look at us and go, ‘You’re nuts,’” John Contant said about welcoming a fifth

Elmhurst, Home Depot in Northlake and HOBO in Villa Park for donating supplies and food for volunteers. He said his family expects to need about $35,000 to fund the adoption process. Both Hands collects donations designated for the Contants and puts them in an escrow account the family can draw from for adoption expenses. Should any money be left over, it will be applied to another adoption either by the Contants or another family. The money has started to come in, but Contant said they are still a long way from their goal. Ronne helped the Contants financially during Maeve’s adoption, so when they heard about the Both Hands project, they knew they would use the opportunity to give back to Ronne. While they had a plan, Contant was still surprised by the project. “It’s very humbling that people would give us their time like this,” he said.

ELMHURST – An Elmhurst family on a mission to expand its numbers has chosen a journey that benefits its neighbor, as well. “We have so much to give as a family,” John Contant said, explaining why the family of six feels called to adopt a second child from China. The Contants won’t just be giving an orphan a new home; they also enlisted a couple dozen others to help them fix up their neighbor Ed Ronne’s home through an organization called Both Hands. The organization’s mission, “to serve orphans, widows and adoptive families,” comes to life as adoptive families assemble a crew of volunteers and supplies to repair a widow’s home. In exchange for their volunteer work, the family and friends ask for sponsors to fund an adoption. Contant likened the project to charitable races where donors sponsor a runner, but instead of running a race, the Contants, along with family and friends, gave their time and energy to fix up Ronne’s home. “Ed has been in our family’s life,” Contant said.

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com A Carol Stream man pleaded guilty Nov. 13 to attempted first-degree murder after he shot his wife in July 2011 in Oakbrook Terrace after she left work in Elmhurst, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Ronald D. Attorney’s Of- Smith fice. Aiesha Thomas left Lexington Health Care for the day when Ronald D. Smith forced her car off the road with his vehicle on Butterfield Road near Route 83 and opened fire, striking his wife in the wrist. Thomas exited the vehicle and a passing motorist picked her up. Smith then followed that vehicle. After a brief

chase, he forced it off the road and opened fire once again. The good Samaritan drove Thomas to the Oakbrook Terrace Police Department, and she was then taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. Smith later turned himself into police. In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Smith also pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm, Darrah said. Since being charged, he has remained in the DuPage County Jail on $500,000 bond, Darrah said. Smith will be sentenced Dec. 2 and he is expected to receive a 31-year sentence, based on an agreement among the prosecutors, defense attorneys and presiding judge, Darrah said. Smith’s trial was scheduled to begin this week before he pleaded guilty to the charges against him, he said.

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Pathway Community Church in Elmhurst is on a mission to bring a CareNet office to the city, but it is looking for donations to support the most expensive element – a portable ultrasound machine. “It’s a great ministry because it’s not just saying don’t abort...It’s actually taking the birth mom’s hand and saying we’ll help you,” Pathway member and Elmhurst resident Joyce Hamstra said. The church, which has offices in Elmhurst City Centre and meets every Sunday at York Theatre, has a team of CareNet advocates. They have been working to connect pregnant women and others who could benefit from CareNet services with the organization. According to its website, CareNet began in 1981 as a ministry dedicated to assisting women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Since then, what was originally a hotline has expanded to four office locations offering pregnancy counseling, abstinence education and ultrasounds, among other services. “We’re going to start out using our offices until it grows big enough that they need their own space,” said Rev. Kirt Wiggins, Pathway’s lead pastor. He explained the church began discussing how they could help CareNet open a location in Elmhurst during the summer. When the nonprofit told him the $30,000 portable ultrasound was the largest expense, Wiggins said the church decided to take on the funding challenge.

It all starts by allowing physicians to lead the way when making medical decisions, not administrators. At DuPage Medical Group, doctors are in charge of your well-being. ELMHURST – Every year, thousands of families flood Elmhurst streets on Thanksgiving Day morning to complete the Dan Gibbon’s Turkey Trot before enjoying their day off with plenty of food. “It’s the 31st year, and what’s fun about it is you see it’s become a tradition for a lot of families,” race founder and Executive Director Dan Gibbons said. He’s expecting record-breaking attendance this year between 9,000 and 10,000 people. Gibbons said online registration was already up 21 percent from last year as of Wednesday. If last year is any indication, he expects participants to represent 36 different states and six different countries. As it has since its inception in 1984, the 5K family fun run

Minimum wage hike is midterm winner Before you get too euphoric or too depressed over the 2014 midterm general election results, keep in mind the voting Nov. 4 nationally mirrored the sixth-year outcomes of second-term Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and even Ronald Reagan. It is unlikely the electorate for the 2016 presidential election will be as statistically “older white male” – which, at age 59, describes my demographic, I have to admit – as seen this midterm due to lower-than-expected voter turnout among women, young people and minorities. Despite the turnout, COMMUNITY Illinois’ advisory referendum VOICE for $10 an hour by Jan. 1 won John R. with 67 percent of the vote Quigley statewide, 87 percent in the city of Chicago and 64 percent in DuPage County. Illinois’ $8.25 minimum wage is the highest in the Midwest and $1 more than the federal minimum wage. According to a February 2014 report by the Congressional Budget Office, raising the minimum wage to $10.10 will provide higher incomes for an estimated 16.5 million workers, while also resulting in 500,000 job losses. Most increases will not lift America’s minimum-wage-earning families with two children above the poverty line ($23,050 in gross income in 2012). It appears Gov. Pat Quinn will not let his re-election loss to Republican businessman Bruce Rauner stop him from pushing the Democratic-controlled Illinois General Assembly to enact a minimum wage increase during December’s lame-duck session. Gov.-elect Rauner, who has been caught on both sides of the minimum wage fence, wants to use this issue to secure reforms in tax and tort laws and changes in workers’ compensation laws. If enacted before January’s inauguration, it will send a clear signal to the new administration that Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan still are in control. An advisory referendum on a 3-percent millionaires’ tax on income of more than $1 million to help fund Illinois’ public schools drew 65 percent of voter support, including 55 percent in DuPage County. Remember when proceeds from the Illinois State Lottery were the school funding solution? In a close race for the Illinois House 46th District, which includes some of Elmhurst’s west side and all or parts of seven other communities, Democratic incumbent Deb Conroy held off Republican challenger Heidi Holan by a count of 12,543 to 11,411. With the uncontested election of Elmhurst businessman Joe Cantore as president of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, who will be appointed to fill his District 2 seat? Joe, did I mention I live in District 2 and voted for you?

We’re not sure what’s more impressive – Marshall Bell’s positive attitude or the community support he’s receiving. A borrowed electric wheelchair allows the Elmhurst 9-year-old, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to play sports with his friends and move more freely around his classroom. The chair has been a confidence-booster. Now, friends and community members are working to raise funds to get Marshall his own electric wheelchair. Elmhurst Commission on Youth invited DuPage County Coroner Dr. Richard Jorgensen to educate children, parents and other community members about the severe dangers of the drug that killed a combined 84 people in DuPage County in 2012 and 2013. The forum was the latest in a series of efforts to promote awareness of this growing threat to people of all ages, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

Hit the brakes on Berkley

In a Sound Off, people were talking about taking back the country. What country are they talking about? What country do they live in? I don’t understand that. That’s a real crazy remark. It sounds crazy to me.

I wanted to continue to post about traffic on West Avenue [in Elmhurst]: As a resident on Berkley by St. Charles Road by the high school, we experience traffic and speeders constantly, especially during rush hour. The police have been notified about this. People like to use Berkley as a shortcut, but it’s still happening. People need to remember it’s a residential area and to slow down.

• CHURCH Continued from page 6 To date, Pathway has raised $20,500 toward the machine. Wiggins said he believes Pathway’s offices are a good place for a CareNet because they are more inviting to a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy than a traditional church in a residential area is. “It’s much more neutral,” Wiggins said. Hamstra knows firsthand how CareNet can change lives. She began serving with CareNet when it was just a hotline because she saw such a need for CareNet’s services. “It had such a passion for the person who walked in the doors,” Hamstra said. Several years later, she was asked to adopt a baby by a mother who had come to CareNet. The situation had never crossed Hamstra’s mind before. “When the birth mother asked us to adopt her, we already had four children and we weren’t looking for another child,” said Hamstra, who was raising three biological

children and one daughter adopted from Korea with her husband, Don, at the time. The family realized the financial demand an additional child would create and prayed about the decision before welcoming Gia into their family. “Gia’s grown up in our church and is kind of a living testament,” Wiggins said. Now 22, Gia still lives in Elmhurst with her family, attends cosmetology school and has begun her career by working part time at Merle Norman. “It’s cool to know that God had a plan through all of this,” Joyce Hamstra said. Wiggins said the church plans to move forward and hopes to open CareNet services in its office by spring 2015. “We’re going to still move ahead because we’re trusting the money is going to come in,” Wiggins said. Hamstra said CareNet provides women experiencing unplanned pregnancies with resources, without which they wouldn’t have much of a choice. “I think there is just as much of a need now as ever,” she said.

Customize Your Jeep Wrangler SPONSORED BY

By Denise Freese One of the fun things about owning your own vehicle is being able to make it a part of you, an extension of your personality. The Jeep Wrangler is the perfect canvas for the aftermarket enthusiast. There are many aftermarket options available to transform your Jeep into one that provides a spectacular off-roading experience. According to Larry Roesch Jeep, the most popular modification for the off-roading enthusiast is replacing the tires; second most popular is to replace the stock doors. Depending on the type of activities you enjoy, these parts, along with soft, mesh, and bikini tops can open up the vehicle to nature, while protecting the occupants from the weather and road debris. Other modifications to consider adding include: Lift kits, roll bars or cages, body armor, bumper mounted lights, grill guards, hood hold downs and a locking fuel door. Tire carri-

ers offer the security of a spare tire. Side steps can ease the transition into and out of the vehicle. Interior grab handles are small handles that attach to the roof or to the back of the front seats; passengers can hold onto these when riding on challenging trails. Light bars and brackets can be attached to the top of the hood, windshield, or even to the bumper to improve visibility at night or during bad weather. Additional options include bug deflectors, hood vents, lockable interior compartments, cargo liners and cargo nets. A wide variety of vinyl decals and graphics are available, which can add to your vehicle’s personality and do double duty by covering up old scratches and scars. While the customization options are almost limitless, one important option to have is recovery gear to tow your Wrangler to safety should it become immobilized. Most kits include recovery straps, snatch blocks, tow hooks, and d-rings.

FINDING CHILDREN’S COMFORT ZONE When fitting children with prescription eyeglasses, comfort is of paramount importance. Every child has a unique face, and frames should be chosen to fit appropriately. Once careful measurements ensure correct sizing, look for eyeglass frames with features such as silicone nose pads with non-skid surfaces that prevent slippage. Comfort cables secure children’s eyeglasses by wrapping around their ears. These are even available for frames worn by infants. Another good feature is flexible hinges that bend outward, which is useful for children who pull the temple away from their head when removing glasses. For babies, straps may be needed to replace earpieces so that they might roll over or lay on their sides without discomfort or dislodging their glasses. Up to 25 percent of school-age children may have vision problems that can affect learning. An eye doctor can test for common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. To schedule an exam for your child, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. Some of our eyewear brands include Ray Ban, Fossil, Gucci, Silhouette, Nine West, Juicy Couture, Coach, Maui Jim, and Cole Haan. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Shatterproof polycarbonate lenses, which have built-in UV protection to block the sun’s harmful rays, are recommended for children’s eyeglasses.

Roman Catholic The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady-Mother of Eucharist is available 24 hours a day for private prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar. The Chapel is located in the Convent Building (south side of church) at York and Madison in Elmhurst.

DERMATOLOGY UPDATE Todd T. Davis, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

TREATING ROSACEA Rosacea is a skin disease that causes flare-ups of reddened, bumpy facial skin. Over time, the 16 million Americans who suffer from the chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder may also display ruddier and more persistently red skin as well as visible blood vessels. Fortunately, there are effective treatments, including topical gels, lotions, and creams containing either metronidazole or azeleic acid. Their continued use helps keep rosacea under control without producing side effects. At the same time, very low doses of antibiotics such as doxycycline (beginning with oral medications and transitioning to topicals) help control inflammation. If blood vessels become dilated, treatment with pulsed dye laser, pulsed green-light laser, and intense

pulsed light may help eradicate them. There are several types of rosacea and their symptoms vary in both severity and extent. Due to the raised, red bumps that may contain pus, rosacea is sometimes dubbed “adult acne”. If you are concerned about any skin rash, you may call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at to schedule an appointment. Our office is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7. Lighting the Village of Addison Christmas tree SPONSORED BY

By C.R. Walker

Come and celebrate the holiday season on Friday, Dec. 5 as the beautiful Village of Addison Christmas tree is lit by Mayor Rich Veenstra, Miss Addison 2014, Samantha Slater, and Santa and Mrs. Claus. All are invited to stop in at Addison Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza, for what’s sure to be a fun evening for all ages. Oh, and don’t forget your camera because there will be plenty of great photo opportunities for children. This will be an ideal and convenient time to take the perfect picture for this year’s holiday card. Beginning at 5 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will be ready to listen to children’s wish lists inside the rotunda near the Christmas tree. Some of Santa’s friends, including Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer, as well his elves, will say hello and pose for pictures. The elves will take a break from building toys and

make free balloon animals for the kids.

“A child shouldn’t have that disadvantage,” Gibbons said of those who go hungry each day. This year will bring the race’s collective donations past the $3 million mark since it began 31 years ago. More than 200 volunteers will show up at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day to set up for the run while it’s still dark out. As has become tradition, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Jim Cornelison will sing the National Anthem before the race, accompanied by a pair of Marines. Marines Rita O’Reilly and her fiance, Brian Kollias – who will be married in May – will make up the Honor Guard for the race.

“She’s just got a heart of gold,” Gibbons said of O’Reilly, who is the Marine Corps League Department of Illinois Toys for Tots chairwoman. While the race has established several traditions through the years, this will be the second year it follows a new course through downtown Elmhurst. Mary Lou Mastro, president and CEO of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, will be this year’s honorary starter along with Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley, Chief of Police Michael Ruth and Fire Chief Jeff Bacidore. In the spirit of family fun, the race doesn’t use microchips to time runners and many come dressed as turkeys or pilgrims. A powerful moment Gibbons remembers each year is looking out at the crowd of thousands and thinking about how they’ll all go home later to a nice warm meal with family and the additional families who might have the same experience thanks to the race. “People plan their holidays around this because it’s become such a tradition,” Gibbons said.

After kicking back for a horse-drawn wagon ride through Friendship Plaza and the Historical District campus you may need some warming up. No worries, the Kiwanis Club of Addison will be handing out cups of free hot chocolate, and while supplies last, Muggs ‘N Manor will provide free hot dogs and Clyde’s Delicious Donuts will serve free donuts, and the Knights of Columbus will serve popcorn. Also, Uncle Harry’s Ice Cream is planning on selling seasonal ice cream and pastries. At 7 p.m. in the board room on the second floor of Village Hall, the Addison Trail “Shades of Blue” ensemble and students from Stone and Lake Park elementary schools will provide musical entertainment to get everyone into the spirit of the season. The tree will be lit after the music concludes.

Celebrating our 11th

Christmas in Elmhurst

Christmas tidbits to put you in the holiday spirit Genuine Alex and Ani Positive Energy in Elmhurst exclusively

T

he holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone. • In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older. • Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0. • The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born. • Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

adno=S0244085

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

Holiday Entertaining The only secret you need to know for successful holiday meal planning Victoria offers these tips on how to balance meal prep time: Save on an already "homemade" dessert: The last course of the meal is your final chance to wow guests, but many of the most impressive holiday desserts are also the most time-consuming to prepare. You can serve an outstanding dessert with virtually no prep time and without losing the truly homemade taste, thanks to frozen brands like Marie Callender's. Along with the homemade scent and flavor, Marie's starts your 'homemade' pie for you, allowing time to add your own special touches such as sugar cookie cutouts placed on the pie before baking. For additional homemade elements, be sure to choose varieties that have those special touches you would add if you were doing the baking - like handpicked apples and hand-placed chocolate curls.

(BPT) - You don't need the juggling skills of a big-top performer in order to host a successful holiday gathering. Careful planning, time management and an eye for adding quick and easy 'homemade' touches will make your gathering one for the memory books, while still having plenty of time to enjoy the company of your guests. Don't let poor planning leave you cooped up in a hot kitchen while everyone else revels in the joys of the season. "The secret to holiday meal time-management is simple: Know where to spend and know where to save, without sacrificing the homemade taste" says Victoria Hudgins, an entertaining expert. "Reducing time spent on certain aspects of the meal can allow you to invest more in other areas. For example, instead of spending hours making a homemade dessert, consider a high-quality store-bought pie and some whipped topping to put your own special touches on at home and achieve the homemade look and taste."

What to do with the time you save: Invest in making a main course that will leave guests impressed and full. The extra hour you save on dessert prep could be just enough time to add flare to the turkey, holiday ham or even some knock-out steaks. Save on appetizers: Appetizers set the tone for the meal, so they need to be appealing. On the other hand, you don't want guests to fill up on them and have no room left for the main course. Keeping appetizers light and simple saves room in guests' tummies and saves you time, too. Serve simple two-ingredient appetizers or even storebought options to minimize prep time. What to do with the time you save: Put the time-savings toward more sophisticated side dishes. Along with traditional family favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes, try something new that might require a bit more prep and longer cooking time, such as a winter squash

Save on topping off your holidays dishes: No one wants to serve dull dishes, and you don't have to spend a lot of time to add pizzazz. Simple touches, like adding Reddi-wip, can transform a variety of dishes. For example, basic eggnog gets a pop of mint flavor and festive color with Reddi-Wip peppermint chocolate egg nog. A whoosh of topping sprinkled with crushed peppermint candies creates a joyful touch on this jazzed-up holiday favorite. Best of all, adding this real cream goodness is just 15 calories. What to do with the time you save: Add more pizzazz to holiday decorating. Create a stunning centerpiece for the table featuring holiday items like fresh pine branches, scented pine cones, pillar candles in holiday colors and even Christmas balls. Incorporate festive touches in table settings, such as napkin holders made from a single artificial poinsettia blossom and holiday ribbon, chair covers in holiday patterns, and place card holders made from pine cones. Save on invitations. Instead of the time and money you would invest in choosing, preparing and mailing paper invitations, use e-invitations instead. It's easy to find free online services that allow you to create and send digital invitations, and many even track responses and maintain an up-to-date guest list. What to do with the time you save: Perfect your holiday playlist. Holiday music playing in the background can underscore the mood of your holiday event. With the time you've saved on invitations, you'll have plenty of opportunity to peruse online playlists and find the perfect mix of holiday songs - traditional, instrumental, country or contemporary - to accompany the festivities. "Getting ready for holiday guests doesn't have to be stressful and time-consuming," Hudgins says. "Substitutions like frozen desserts, additions such as whipped topping, and some smart time management can help you make the most of your prep time, so that you have more precious moments with those you love."

Holiday Recipe LANDof

‘NOG THIS is how eggnog should taste

By Emily Arno Relish

There seem to be two camps around Christmastime — those who adore eggnog and those who abhor it. Naturally, we find ourselves on the side of adoration, but with all those soupy, sickeningly sweet variations available on marketplace shelves, we can see the haters’ point. That’s not eggnog. Real eggnog is rich, velvety and frothed to perfection. So this year, brew your ‘nog from home and don’t cut corners with cheap brandies or rum. Think of it this way — if you won’t drink it straight, it’ll probably spoil your concoction. Also keep in mind that spicy eggnog flavorings can easily go beyond the mug. Integrate leftovers into our cleverly delicious Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake.

Holiday Eggnog Yields 7 cups • 6 whole eggs • 2 egg yolks • 1 cup granulated sugar • 4 t sea salt • 3 cups whole milk • 1 T vanilla extract • 1 to 2 cup bourbon whiskey • 1 to 2 t freshly ground nutmeg • 1 cup heavy cream • 4 cup vanilla sugar (or plain granulated sugar) Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a heavy-bottom sauce pot. Whisk until smooth, then stir in milk. Cook and stir over low heat until custard is cooked to about 165F, or until thick

My friend’s only regret about her skillet was she couldn’t finish it. The crispy breakfast potatoes with warm soft centers were just too filling. The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco. While I liked the red salsa, my

personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde. The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.

We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m. The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices. While my brunch was stellar, I’ll definitely make

BOLINGBROOK – It was a crisp autumn morning when my friend and I walked into Sage Kitchen + Bar in Bolingbrook. The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space. We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks. My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs. Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette. I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option. We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side. As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day. My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

COLLEGE NOTES

Timothy grads guide Calvin to volleyball finals SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Fall sports are coming to a close for not only high schools, but for college teams as well. Here’s a look at how some Elmhurst student-athletes fared for their college teams this fall.

Pair of Timothy grads help Calvin volleyball to Elite 8 Senior Elise Biesboer and freshman Jenna Lodewyk, both Timothy Christian graduates, have been part of the Calvin College volleyball team’s run in the Division III NCAA Tournament this fall. The Knights have reached the final eight of the tournament, which takes place tonight in Newport News, Va. Calvin enters with a 30-3 record. Both seniors received second-team honors.

Former IC Catholic pair reunite on college court A year ago Kimmy Martino and Delaney D’Amore helped IC Catholic win the Class 2A state volleyball title. This season the pair went separate ways in college with Martino setting at Butler and D’Amore playing as a defensive specialist at St. John’s. However, both schools are in the Big East and they met on

Oct. 10 at St. John’s. D’Amore had 11 digs in a 25-19, 25-17, 2520 victory for the Red Storm. Martino also saw the court, registering one dig. The two will meet again Saturday in Indianapolis for the regular season finale for both teams. On the season, Martino has 14 assists and a pair of aces in nine matches played. D’Amore has racked up 130 digs, 17 assists and five aces.

Cohn finds a new home Former York basketball star David Cohn averaged 3.9 points in 15 minutes per game as a freshman for Colorado State last year, but transferred to William & Mary this school year. The guard will sit out this season and return to the court next year with three years of eligibility remaining.
