ELMHURST – February came in with a bang this weekend, bringing with it about 19 inches of snow. While Elmhurst Public Works crews battled the snow, local schools, including those in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205, closed for a snow day Monday. Snow began falling Saturday evening and continued through late Sunday night. Ricky Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chicago, said the snowfall totals for DuPage County surpassed a foot. “Some of the high amounts we’re seeing over the two days is 15 to 19 inches,” he said. Garbage collection in Elmhurst was delayed a day this week because of the storm. Castro said the high amount of snow is a result of an “unseasonably high amount of moisture” being carried from the tropics of the Pacific Ocean. That, combined with the fact that the system was slow moving and the weather was cold enough for snow, resulted in the large snowfall. According to the National Weather Service, Chicago O’Hare International Airport had 19.3 inches of snow, which set the record for the snowiest day in February. That ranks as the fifth larg-

Castro said the whole system has passed, and there are no signs of additional significant snowfall. “It doesn’t look like anything significant in the next seven to 10 days, so far,” he said Monday.

She underwent intense chemotherapy, and she was given a clean bill of health after three months. Her first “second act” after surviving childhood cancer was pursuing a career as a nurse in pediatric oncology, and she worked at Children’s Memorial Hospital for several years. Stepenske’s second “second act” began after she was diagnosed with the same cancer, 19 years later in 2008, while 28 weeks pregnant with her second daughter. “I found lumps in my armpit, and I should’ve been worried about stretch marks and breast feeding, but instead I

Stepenske began chemotherapy almost immediately. Her daughter Grace, now 6, was delivered healthy at 36 weeks. Just nine days postpartum, Stepenske had a stem cell transplant. She’s now healthy, and she has joined several survivor networks, including becoming a mentor to women who are pregnant and fighting cancer. She also founded SurvivorVision, which raises funds for research and advocates for childhood cancer survivors. Stepenske said if she can touch just one life at Sunday’s performance, it will be worth it. “If there’s a survivor who’s struggling who hears my story and can see that there’s life after cancer, then that’s the goal,” she said. “You might not be the same person, and that’s OK. You might even have a better life after cancer.”

A four-year survivor of breast cancer, Pearson knows “cancer doesn’t end when treatment does.” She explains that women go through a myriad of physical and social effects from treatment. “Post-traumatic stress disorder runs rampant in survivors,” she said. “You’re left on your own after treatment, and you’re left to figure out what it all means after you’ve spent the last year of your life in a medical cocoon.” Pearson said all cancer survivors have a “second act” after treatment, and it’s important for them to figure out what to do with their time and experience to give back to society for the greater good. “You’ll never be the same person you were,” she said. “You can’t have that traumatic experience and be the

ELMHURST – Most people wouldn’t say having cancer is a “blessing.” But that’s exactly how two-time survivor Julia Stepenske describes her journey with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t had it the first time,” the 40-year-old Elmhurst resident said. “The second time it proved how strong and resilient I really am. Cancer has given me courage that I can survive and thrive. It made me believe I can do anything. ” Stepenske will share her experience during the inaugural Chicago performance of “My 2nd Act: Survivor Stories from the Stage” at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Athenaeum Theatre. Stepenske said she hopes she can help others who are going or have gone through a cancer diagnosis. The other survivors who are performing in the show look at cancer the same way she does; they all turned an awful experience into something positive, she said. “Our journeys aren’t the same, but the feeling is,” Stepenske said. “The show will be empowering. It’s quite therapeutic to share your story.” Judy Pearson is the co-founder of the Women’s Survivor Alliance, which is presenting Sunday’s performance. She said the purpose of the group is to “bring women survivors of all cancers together so they can heal.” The Chicago show is only the second one the group has done. Performances are scheduled in several cities across the country, and each city features nine local survivors, representing women of

By TRACY GRUEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ELMHURST – Students at York Community High School in Elmhurst are getting the rare opportunity to be the first high school actors to perform the musical “Dogfight,” which premiered Thursday and continues through Sunday. The students also had the special experience of working with the musical’s composers, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are Tony-nominated Broadway composers. “It’s very unique, and we were really honored that they worked with our students,” said Becky Marianetti, who is co-directing the musical at York. The composers flew in from New York to do a workshop with the York

drama students, Marianetti said. They collaborated with the composers to adapt the script and score for the high school actors. “Dogfight” takes place the night before John F. Kennedy was assassinated. It is about young Marines about to go off to war and a cruel joke they play on some girls. Marianetti said there is a Vietnam War fight scene that was very emotional for the cast members to watch. Unlike some other productions, “Dogfight” allowed the students to play characters the same age as them, and they could relate to various themes in the production, such as having to grow up too fast, Marianetti said. “It’s had a large impact on the way I think of myself,” said Ginny Watson, a senior who plays Rose in the musical, a girl who is extremely excited to go on her first date, only to find out she was asked as part of a joke. Watson said she could relate to how

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced Monday in a news release he will introduce legislation aimed at banning excessive severance packages at public institutions. Breen said the legislation will be called the Breuder Rule, after the College of DuPage Board of Trustees approved a $762,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder, who will receive the money when he retires in March 2016. After retiring, Breuder also will be the namesake of the Homeland Security Education Center. Breen said Breuder deserves for legislation to be named after him instead of a building. “Too many so-called public servants are getting rich at the expense of the taxpayers, and the Breuder Rule will prevent this going forward,” Breen said in the release. Breen’s legislation also would forbid community college boards from raising property taxes, tuition or fees after an excessive severance payout, which he defined as anything greater than one year’s salary and benefits.

Positioning Elmhurst library for the future On a sunny October day in 2003, the Elmhurst community got its first glimpse at the Elmhurst Public Library’s warm light-infused space that we’ve all come to love over these nearly 12 years. Over those years, the community has embraced all that the library is: a place for you to explore, learn and grow. Although 12 years may not seem like a long time, many technological and sociCOMMUNITY etal changes have occurred in VOICE those years that affect how you Cheryl use your library and what the Moore library provides for you. Updated meeting rooms: For example, when we updated the audio/visual equipment in the meeting rooms in 2014, we removed obsolete items like VHS players from a complicated and aging system. Now, the new spaces and technology allow users to plug USB drives, laptops, and Mp3 players directly into the system for easy access. New computers: Also in 2014, computers were upgraded. The old computers had been in use for more than six years, far outlasting the life expectancy of the machines, especially given their heavy use. Now the Computer Lab is equipped with “dual-boot” computers that can run Windows and Mac software, and all other computers were replaced with current models and up-to-date software. Smart scanners and other technology: You can also use new scanners with features like text recognition and large-image scanning, allowing users to scan a large image in parts, which the machine reconstructs as one image. Creative resources: This is the area where you really shine, because you bring the creativity to the tools the library provides. The following is a list of the great creative technology that you’re able to access right now: iPads, fax machines, knitting needles, laptops, Mondopads, e-readers with preloaded books, projectors in wheeled cases, sewing machines (used for programs), typewriter, VHS-to-DVD converter and video conferencing. In addition, the renovation will provide housing for other creative tools: Creative studio: These three soundproofed rooms feature professional quality tools for creating high-quality graphic, video, audio and music content. Print room: This room houses specialty print items, including a poster printer and 3-D printer. Construction is on schedule and continues with the study rooms, labs, business center and refinishing the grand staircase. The Teen Area will be finished as furnishings arrive. The installation of a fireplace and comfortable seating will complete the magazine and newspaper reading and browsing area. Come by and see all of the changes!

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF VISION LOSS? Most people would probably name glaucoma and cataracts as the most common causes of vision impairment. However, new research shows that a less familiar eye disease is most responsible for vision loss and has been so for the past two decades. According to a study of 5,000 individuals, 44% of those with severe visual impairment suffered from late agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). Researchers noted that rates of this condition have changed little over the past 20 years, and many people do not know what it is. The disease, which causes deterioration of the central part of the retina (macula), may be caused by smoking, oxidative stress, high blood pressure, and/or abnormal cholesterol. The risk of AMD also increases with age. AMD usually produces a slow, painless loss of vision. In rare cases, however, vision loss can be sudden. Early signs of vision loss from AMD include shadowy areas in your central vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted vision. There is no cure for AMD, but AMD treatments may prevent severe vision loss or slow the progression of the disease. To schedule an eye exam, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Because most people are not aware they have age-related macular degeneration until they have noticeable symptoms or until it is detected during an eye examination, it is vitally important to have your eyes examined on a regular basis.

I read about Mindy’s, that antique store that used to be on Vallette Street, and wanted to mention the exorbitant rents. Remember the TCBY that was off Vallette on York Road. It was there for many, many years. We had fun memories of the going there, going across the street with the small kids by the fountain. They had to close down. I remember Scott, being one of the owners, and he said because of the high fees and rents he just had to close. How many years was that place closed, nothing happening, just an empty building for many years. And now, lo and behold, we have another dental office. Just what we need another one in Elmhurst.

KEITH A. FAILON Born: Nov. 17, 1937; in Kewanee, IL Died: Feb. 1, 2015; in Rock Island, IL Keith Albert Failon, died peacefully at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Island IL on February 1, 2015, at the age of 77. Mr. Failon is survived by two children, Brian Failon (Kim) of Richmond VA and Kim Phelan (Bill) of Lombard IL; six grandchildren, one in New York City (Kathryn Failon), two in Richmond (Caroline and Nicholas Failon), and three in Lombard (Miles and Spencer Fogle, and Olivia Zilinski); sister, Joyce Nolan, of Milan IL; and brother, Roger Failon, of Rock Island. Mr. Failon was born on November 17, 1937, in Kewanee IL to Jesse and Esther Failon. He graduated from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign with a Master's degree in Mathematics. He married Nancy Coffman, originally of Des Plaines, in 1960. A lifelong resident of Illinois, he lived in Elmhurst during his best years, while he was a tenured faculty member, in the Mathematics Department, at Elmhurst College. His good sense for numbers, coupled with business acumen and salesmanship, drew him into real estate, first residential sales, then commercial sales and property management. He particularly enjoyed syndicating investment properties, especially apartment buildings, where he often would do the maintenance himself. He could have been the TV host for “Flip this Apartment Building.” His passion for real estate was only surpassed by his love for his Chicago Cubbies. He spent many an afternoon in the Friendly Confines, as well as several Spring Trainings in Arizona. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on February 28th at Edgewood Baptist Church, 2704 38th St, Rock Island, with a reception to follow. Pastor Dan Cullett will officiate the ceremony. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Aunt Joyce (Nolan), for her loving and compassionate care of our father, her brother, in his later years.

• RAUNER Continued from page 6 whether or not local government employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment – Rauner dubbed the localized right-to-work areas “employee empowerment zones.” “Employee empowerment zones will increase jobs for residents, increase economic activity for local businesses and generate more tax dollars for local governments. It’s a win-win-win proposal,” Rauner said. Rauner also seeks to limit organized labor’s influence by extending the existing ban on political contributions for businesses with state contracts to all organization with a collective bargaining agreement with state government, and organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds. In exchange for the business reforms, Rauner said he supports a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased in over seven years. While Rauner in his speech did not address the state’s $111 billion unfunded pension liability – a 2013 reform bill is awaiting an Illinois Supreme Court ruling regarding its constitutionality – his priorities list included a proposal to move state employees into a new tier of benefits or into 401(k)s while protecting the pension benefits they have accumulated to date. Another proposal seeks to give state government employees merit-based raises. A number of Rauner’s proposals are aimed at the local level, such as lowering the property tax burden on Illinois homeowners. Besides the right-to-work and prevailing wage reforms that he said will decrease local government’s costs, he wants a two-year freeze on property taxes and an increased emphasis on consolidating local units of government – Illinois at almost 7,000 has far more than any other state. Lawmakers will meet again in two weeks when Rauner delivers his proposed 2016 budget, which will give a more complete picture as to how he plans to pay for initiatives such as

increased funding for K-12 education, and at the same time what needs to be cut. Besides a multi-billion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year beginning July 1. A much-criticized 2011 increase in the state income tax was allowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised. While Rauner said he wants to keep income taxes “low and competitive with other states” and keep the state’s flat tax over a progressive one based on income, he wants to extend the state sales tax to include a number of services. He likely will find pushback from members of his own Republican caucus, some of whom oppose any attempt to find more revenue over cutting spending.

Local lawmakers react Rauner’s speech earned high praise from local Republican legislators and even received positive words from the other side of the aisle. Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said she’s encouraged by Rauner’s early signs of bipartisan leadership. “It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on longterm solutions to the state’s problems,” she said. State Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, was part of the committee of lawmakers who escorted Rauner into the House of Representatives chambers to present his address. Nybo said he is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work with Rauner and his fellow lawmakers to improve Illinois’ business climate and boost jobs creation. “He’s got a plan to get our economy back on track, to get our budget under control, and at the same time, to direct more money to our schools. Education is the most important thing we do in our state,” Nybo said. “I think he can accomplish a lot. I think he is looking for partners. I am excited to be one of those partners, and I am ready to get to work.” State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged” by the governor’s pledge to consolidate units of government after she was part of the bipartisan effort in DuPage County.

(BPT) - To satisfy homeowners seeking to add a signature style to their indoor living spaces, more and more design professionals and builders are going back to basics and rediscovering the versatility, durability and good looks of cypress. “There’s really nothing quite like it,” says Hal Mitchell of the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association, www. CypressInfo.org. “It’s an exceptional wood that offers variety and lasting performance to any home, anywhere. And for interior applications, as paneling, millwork, cabinetry, or flooring, cypress delivers a unique look that complements practically every architectural style. So whether in the woods or ocean front, rustic to contemporary, with cypress, the possibilities are endless.”

Bring warmth to modern design

pizazz to otherwise lackluster ceilings and walls. “Cypress is really easy to work with,” Carver explains. “It readily accepts paints and stains and can be used as exposed beams, cabinetry, and other decorative elements. Most importantly, because of its natural color, which ranges from honey to light chocolate, you can better engineer a desired finish. I haven’t found a comparable product that gives as nice of a finish. “We recently built a custom bathroom vanity out of cypress that was on the darker end of the cypress color spectrum. We applied a stain to accentuate the natural color and created a stunning look that couldn’t have been duplicated with another wood species. We also are getting ready to do an entire family room with cypress. Paneling, ceiling, moulding - it’s going to be absolutely beautiful.”

When it comes to material selection for architect Jody Beck of Traction Architecture in Tampa, Florida, Beck chooses cypress to “warm-up” her designs. Despite the influx of trendy building materials, cypress is her go-to material. So much so that she featured it in a beach house she recently designed for her family on Anna Maria Island, Florida. “Almost all of the wood in the home is cypress,” Beck says, “including cypress flooring in the bedrooms and awesome, built-in cabinetry. This consistency from room to room, coupled with cypress’ natural warmth and wonderfully subtle glow, sets off the rest of the home’s material palette, offering a nice juxtaposition to the clean, modern spaces.”

For Tampa, Florida award-winning builder, Marc Rutenberg, Marc Rutenberg Homes, it’s cypress’ texture and rich grain that separate it from other species, and make it especially desirable for a home’s unique, architectural details. “Appearance is number one,” Rutenberg says. “And while cypress is usually seen with a flat grain, showing intriguing figure, some homeowners are requesting vertical-grain cypress, which has a fine grain that has an almost delicate appearance. The tight pinstripes are bone straight and they bring a fantastic texture to the surface without being busy. It achieves a wonderful look.”

A horse of a different color

Show your signature style

Craig Carver, owner of Greenville, South Carolina luxury home builder, The Carver Group, favors cypress because it’s user-friendly and offers great variety. He recommends it to clients wanting to add

For your new home or next remodeling project, be sure your design professional is specifying cypress. Because when it comes to versatility, durability, good looks and style, cypress is hard to beat.

ELMHURST – The postseason is right around the corner and York’s girls basketball team finished the conference portion of its schedule with three straight wins. The Dukes beat conference-leading Lyons Township 37-32 Jan. 30, which was LT’s first loss in the West Suburban Silver, and knocked off Glenbard West 43-34 a day later. York beat Downers Grove North 48-34 Tuesday in the Dukes’ conference finale. York finished 9-3 in the Silver and still has a chance to win a share of the conference, but they need help. LT and Hinsdale Central are both 9-2 with one game left. The Lions travel to Oak Park-River Forest on Friday while the Red Devils host Proviso West. “Sometimes I tell our girls it’s better to be lucky than good, and we need that help,” York coach John Constable said. “I’m kicking myself right now with two losses to Hinsdale Central because if we could have got one of those two we could have controlled our destiny. Now our destiny is in the hands of some other teams.” Regardless of what happens elsewhere in the conference, York is playing well as the postseason nears. The Dukes have won 13 of their last 15 games since a 5-4 start to the season. “We had some games that we probably could have played out better, but I’m proud of that,” senior guard Jessica Bianchi said. “I’m happy where we are this year.” Defense remains a key for York. During the three-game conference winning streak, the Dukes gave up less than 35 points in each game. Constable credited Kelly Polte for her defense on the interior. Polte kept 6-foot-2 Downers Grove North senior Peyton Winters scoreless Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bianchi did more of her distribution work at point guard, scoring

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Each basketball season players graduate and leave openings for new players to step into the following year. Some varsity newcomers make an impact right away and some returners earn bigger roles. Here’s a list of some such breakout players from York, Glenbard East, Willowbrook and other area schools:

Mike Finley School: Glenbard East Class: Sophomore Position: Guard Impact: Finley was on varsity last year and started for a young Glenbard East squad. The Rams have more experience and have seen more success this winter, and Finley has been a big part of that. He has become a more consistent player, arguably the most reliable player in the lineup.

Matt Gontarek School: Addison Trail Class: Senior Position: Guard Impact: Gontarek started a number of games for the Blazers last year, so the ability he offered the team was no secret entering the season. As an athletic 6-foot4 forward, Lyles is a tough player to match up with and coach T.J. Tyrrell called him the hardest working player on the team. He is averaging 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Verge, Warriors get best of Blazers squad By DAVE OWEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ADDISON – Before the weekend blizzard hit, Alonzo Verge Jr. continued to storm through West Suburban Gold foes. The Willowbrook sophomore’s 19 points Saturday, including the late game-winning 3-pointer, keyed a 64-63 win against Hinsdale South, but his performance in a 76-73 overtime win against Addison Trail the previous night was a highlight film. Verge’s 44 points, eight rebounds and six steals stole the show, and his blocked shot of an AT 3-point attempt at the buzzer was the fitting finale. “My teammates always get me going and keep my confidence up,” said Verge, who was just shy of his career-high of 45. “I try to lift them up, and

they always come through for me and trust me with the ball so I try to make as much positive happen as I can.” Verge’s positive 20-point third quarter helped Willowbrook (16-6, 5-3) turn a 47-38 deficit with 2:22 left in the quarter into a 50-47 lead after three. After a driving layup by Ryan Zygowicz put Addison Trail ahead 73-71 with 1:10 left in overtime, a 5-0 Willowbrook run to close the game included a steal and layup by Verge that put the Warriors up 75-73 with 40 seconds left. “When somebody starts feeling confident and they’re a good player to begin with, it really is hard to stop that momentum,” Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons said. “He’s very tough to defend, but I’m disappointed with our team defense.”

Jake Bruns (12 points) and Chris Roycroft (nine points, eight rebounds) were two key supporting players for Willowbrook. Addison Trail (14-5, 4-3) rode its balance: Taylor White (21 points, seven rebounds) and Zygowicz (12 points) led the way, and adding 10 points each were Jaavion Bradley, Dante Frontier and Eric Grygo. An ankle injury with 6:52 left in regulation knocked Bradley from the game for good, but White’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds left forced overtime tied at 67-67. “Jaavion brings so much,” Lyons said. “Offensively he’s really starting to find his game. It was definitely a loss. “I was proud of the guys stepping up and tying it to force overtime, but four or five key plays stick out.”

Oak Park-River Forest is ranked nationally and expects to get a wrestler through at every weight class, according to York coach Terry Clarke. As a result, one-third of the sectional spots may already be spoken for. “Our regional is really loaded with talent,” Clarke said. “It’s probably the most difficult regional in 3A.” York doesn’t have any sectional qualifiers back from last year, although senior Taylor Hoffman was one match away. He is 32-7 at 145 pounds. His brother Austin, a sophomore, also has a chance at 120 pounds. Juniors Michael Ordonez (32-6 at 138) and Tom Helton (28-8 at 285) hope to get through after strong regular seasons. Steven Burg missed the first half of the season because of injury but could contend at 195 pounds. Clarke mentioned Mark Bernard (220) and Connor Costello (113) as candidates to advance as well. “I think this team has really progressed,” Clarke said while crediting assistant coaches Mike DiNovo, Rob Kichka, Don Kasper, Colin Tovey and Jim Nudera.
