By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Elmhurst and Pick Subdivision park districts are now one, after the boards of both districts unanimously voted to consolidate. The vote from the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners on Wednesday came after a similar vote from the Pick Subdivision’s board March 16. With both groups on board, the consolidation takes effect immediately. The subdivision encompasses about 270 homes west of Kingery Highway and north of St. Charles Road. Members of the subdivision’s Park District approached the Elmhurst Park District about a possible consolidation late last year after they realized only one board member was running for re-election in Tuesday’s election. “I’m excited. This is great for the community,” said Tammy McGowan, president of the former Pick Subdivision Park District. McGowan and board Secretary Dan Murphy attended the meeting Wednesday and reinforced some of their residents’ concerns. “Over the years, people were upset in paying nonresident fees or not being a part of the Elmhurst Park District,”

trict’s lack of resources to provide families and children with more activities and events. A couple residents, old and new, said they were unaware the subdivision was not actually a part of the Elmhurst Park District, placing them at a disadvantage when enrolling their children for preschool or recreational sports. The Pick Subdivision was annexed by Elmhurst in the 1920s, according to the Park District’s website. Residents of the subdivision pay taxes to the city of Elmhurst, School District 45 in Villa Park and DuPage High School District 88. According to the website, only about 17 percent of the subdivision’s residents use Elmhurst Park District programs and services. While McGowan understands the residents’ negative reactions toward the tax increase, she is looking forward to the opportunities it could bring for their community, she said. Brady said she is aware of the price that comes along with this decision, but the real winner tonight is her daughter, who is looking forward to getting access to the local pool – an option the Pick Subdivision Park District does not offer. The Elmhurst Park District board now is focused on informing Pick residents of the recent change.

said Murphy, adding the best solution was to team up with the Elmhurst Park District. However, consolidation talks had been met with opposition from some Pick residents, who raised concerns about the increase they would see in their taxes by joining the Elmhurst Park District. Moving forward, Pick residents with an average home value of $206,000 will now pay about $280 annually in park district taxes, compared to the $20 annually they paid in the past to the Pick Subdivision Park District. McGowan said making a payment of only $20 brings in about $5,000 a year, limiting what the Park District could do with activities, employment, insurance and legal counsel. The District had enough funding to hold only four family-friendly events every year, including ice skating at the Elmhurst YMCA, an outdoor movie showing at Elm Park, an Easter egg hunt and a swim night hosted at a Lombard pool, she said. Anita Brady was one of the Pick residents who appeared Wednesday to voice her support for the park district merger. Brady said she is tired of being wait-listed and dealing with late registration consequences for Elmhurst Park District programs. Others discussed the Pick Park Dis-

ELMHURST – After approving the needed variances and conditional-use permit for the North District development in December, the Elmhurst City Council now has a redevelopment agreement in place with the developer behind the project. In a 12-1 vote, the council approved the Hahn Street redevelopment agreement with Morningside Hahn LLC on Monday for the construction of the North District in downtown Elmhurst. The project includes 192 luxury apartments, 12,000 square feet of retail space, 150 public parking spaces, a civic plaza and stormwater detention. During Monday’s meeting, 5th Ward Alderman Scott Levin highlighted the breakdown of what the city will contribute to the “long and complex project” from a 137-page legal document compiled by the City Council and the developer. “This particular agreement does a good job of sharing costs, risk, resources and benefits,” 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Dunn said. “We are in-

vesting some money in this particular project. We have idle parcels of land that have been underperforming for many years.” Dunn explained the city is putting in a combined total of about $3.5 million through city incentives and a reimbursement for environmental remediation, nearly $19 million in equity and $35 million for a construction loan. Third Ward Alderman Michael Bram opposed the city’s agreement

with the developer. “My point being, this is way too expensive at the cost of taxpayers,” he said. He added residents will cover the costs of the environmental monitoring during construction and building, as well as maintaining the stormwater detention, in exchange for 150 public parking lot spaces. “The dollars, to me, don’t make sense,” Bram said. Levin responded that during the process of selecting the right redevelopment candidate, the “virtually useless” 14-year-old property did not receive any proposals that matched the initial price tag the city paid to purchase the land. “That’s because in the market today, it’s not worth it,” Levin said. He added council members took the time to deliberate whether they thought Morningside provided them with the best offer before making the redevelopment agreement. “We have a good project in front of us,” Dunn said. “It has been a longtime coming.” Fifth Ward Alderman Chris Healy was absent at Monday night’s meeting.

out the issues she discussed during her campaign, which centered on the city’s stormwater management problem Mark and Gov. Bruce Sabatino Rauner’s proposed budget cut for local funding. Throughout the campaign, Sabatino shared Noel Talluto Smentek’s concerns and also focused on the city’s economic development to increase sales tax revenue and bring people back to the downtown area. Tuesday’s election also saw voters re-elect three incumbents to their respective ward seats on the Elmhurst City Council. Second Ward Alderman Bob Dunn, Fourth Ward Alderman Noel Talluto and Sixth Ward Alderman Mike Honquest all were re-elected. Dunn, who received nearly 80 percent of the vote against opponent Claude Pagacz, said he worked hard in the campaign to attain supporters.

Talluto received about 55 percent of the vote, while challenger Mike Baker followed with nearly 45 percent, according to preliminary election results. “I want to thank everyone who supported me,” she said in response to the election’s outcome. She added her opponent Baker held a good race, but the voters had spoken.

dent Carolyn Ubriaco has been re-elected, according to unofficial election results. Candidate Doug Ennis received 23.9 percent of votes and Kevin Graf garnered about 26.3 percent to be elected to the Board of Commissioners, preliminary numbers show. Ennis said he looks forward to assisting the city with its stormwater storage and flooding issues, which greatly affect Elmhurst residents and their homes. Graf mirrored Ennis’s flooding con-

cerns and added he’d like to take a further look into improving Elmhurst’s baseball fields, a suggestion many residents expressed to him during his campaign. Another improvement Ennis hopes to work on is building a multi-use indoor facility that might potentially include a turf field for athletes, a volleyball court and an ice rink, he said. In addition, Ennis would like to continue creating lines of “open communication” between the Park District and Elmhurst residents through public forums, he said. Ubriaco looks forward to getting to know Ennis and Graf and to creating new ideas to improve the Park District, she said. Candidate William Kluth, who received 19.9 percent of the vote, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Clean Slate candidates sweep COD race By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees will soon be looking at a Clean Slate. The trio of candidates that campaigned under the name the Clean Slate and received significant support from Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton swept Tuesday’s election. D e a n n e M a z z o c h i Charles came in the lead with Bernstein 42,903 votes, according to preliminary reports from the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will and Cook county clerks. Frank Napolitano followed with 34,011 votes. Charles Bernstein was third with 28,352 votes. All candidates will commit to six-year terms on the board. The slate won all three seats in DuPage and Will counties and two out of three in Cook County, with incumbents Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage

pushing Bernstein into fifth place. Following the trio was former state representative Sandra Pihos with 26,966 votes. Other candidates i n c l u d e d : D a n B a i - Deanne ley, Claire Ball, David Mazzochi Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger Kempa and Joseph Wozniak. After a long and tumultuous campaign that saw candidates field questions on topics including lack of Frank transparency with the Napolitano current board, public discontentment with college President Robert Breuder and accusations of financial wrongdoing at the school, the incoming trustees believe the taxpayers are more than ready for change. “Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of Du-

Page,” said Mazzochi, Napolitano and Bernstein in a statement distributed election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count, and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Napolitano said the race was all about the need for reform and emphasized the election of the Clean Slate shows taxpayers are ready for something new. “The voters have spoken,” he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.” Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a requested audit of state money

spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.” The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board has recently received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250 per hour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.” Neither Mazzochi nor Bernstein responded to requests for comment on election night.

By MARY BETH VERSACI ELMHURST – Elmhurst College students received an email alert March 30 from the Office of Campus Security about a delayed report of an alleged forcible incident of sexual offense involving two students who knew each other in Stanger Hall, a mostly co-ed residential hall. One of the students reported the incident to Elmhurst College’s Title IX office and declined to go to the police, said Jeff Kedrowski, the college’s executive director of security and emergency management. The college is investigating the incident. In cases like these, students have the option to make a report to the municipal police, campus security or the Title IX office, an office that primarily handles cases of harassment and discrimination, Kedrowski said. “The student gets to make the choice,” he said. ELMHURST – The expected filming of NBC’s “Chicago Fire” on Thursday at the Elmhurst Quarry was canceled because of the severe weather forecast, which included showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. The city of Elmhurst announced April 3 the show would be using the quarry for a stunt rehearsal Tuesday and filming Thursday, causing temporary road closures. A scheduled stunt rehearsal for “Chicago Fire” did take place Tues-

day, Elmhurst Communications Manager Dan Leahy said, although he was unsure if it occurred at the expected time from 1 to 4 p.m. or had to be moved because of the weather. Rescheduling details for the filming have not yet been determined, Leahy said Wednesday. The announcement of the TV show’s presence in Elmhurst was met with an excited response from local residents on social media. Online posts about the filming received many shares, comments and likes on the Facebook pages of Suburban Life Media and the city of Elmhurst.

INDOOR TANNING SKIN BURNS Dermatologists have long warned the public about the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun and indoor tanning booths. Not only does UV radiation often lead to skin cancer, but skin burns requiring hospital treatment are also possible from indoor tanning salons. According to a recent study, more than 3,200 injuries related to indoor tanning were treated each year between 2003 and 2012. Eightytwo percent of the injuries occurred among females, and more than three-quarters of the reported injuries were skin burns. While most of those treated in the emergency room for tanning-related injuries didn’t require hospitalization, burns serious enough to warrant emergency room treatment surely signified overexposure to UV radiation and an

of hope in Springfield

To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between

the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

SOUND OFF

I suggest the U.S. government issue a T-shirt to everyone in our country reading as follows: “Stop Police Harassment Now ... by NOT COMMITTING CRIMES!!!” This should stop harassment immediately.

Full-day kindergarten conundrum What’s all this talk of late about full-day kindergarten all over the place? Kindergarten was never meant to be a full day. It was supposed to be an introduction to schooling for the young child. A full day is too long for the young child. What’s going to happen is the children are going to learn to hate school because they’re there too long. It seems to be that the backers of full-day kindergarten are the parents who want to work instead of being home with their children. My theory is that if you cannot afford to spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.

Not shocked by COD stories I’m not surprised with the recent onslaught of negative stories at COD. Many times as a manufacturing employer, I participated in COD Technical Center Job Fairs, Career Fairs and I walked the halls of the professors sharing my job descriptions for excellent entry level technical positions starting at more than $18 per hour. I told the professors to give me their top 10 students and they would have a job offer within a week. After numerous attempts on my part, not once did I ever receive a resume or a response from a professor. … COD has a wonderful Tech Center, but I thought the purpose of these centers was to find students jobs after they receive the skills.

College of dysfunction? Who is watching out for students, faculty and staff at the College of DuPage? Kathy Hamilton appears to be the only board member that cares! Now we have yet another scandal. It appears as though the Foundation Board that is supposed to be raising private funding for the college is only raising the

Time to fix Fairview Avenue Downers Grove spent time working on Fairview Avenue near 55th last construction season, but the workers left it in worse shape than when they started. It’s time to fix it again.

With the spring upon us—March 20 marked the spring equinox—now is the ideal time to schedule those home and garden-related projects (maintenance, improvements and repairs) that were put into winter hibernation. Don’t wait for: · Spring’s first really hot day to discover that your air conditioning is blowing smoke instead of cold air; · April’s showers to rain down before fixing leaks in your chimney, roof or gutters; · Sweltering summer weather to better insulate your windows and siding; or · Weeding and feeding your lawn if you want it lush and green come summertime. There are plenty of Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry members who are qualified to do the work for you, too. Cold air contractors include Alan Heating & Air Conditioning, Fiebrandt HVAC, My Guy Heating and Cooling, Unique Indoor Comfort of Elmhurst, Unlimited Heating & Cooling, and Visser Heating & Air Conditioning.

As a resident of Elmhurst for 34 years, this is a first for me. Our alderman sent individual letters to his ward to promote an individual for election April 7. Enough knowledge is already available for candidates without the endorsement. The candidate should be able to stand for oneself and it will be the residents of Elmhurst that will make the choice not endorsements by alderman or city hall administration.

Sens. Connelly, Nybo visit Suburban Life Media and discuss state budget, COD By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Although last week was all about the lead up to Tuesday’s municipal elections, a number of statewide issues continue to circle over the collective heads of local voters. State Sens. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, and Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, visited Suburban Life Media’s office in Downers Grove on April 3 to discuss their legislative priorities, the state budget and the College of DuPage.

Rauner budget proposal One of the biggest questions in the state is its budget. A major part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s election platform involved making tough decisions to financially stabilize Illinois. Now, the legislature, municipalities, school districts, nonprofits and other organizations that get a piece of the state pie are voicing support and concern regarding potential cutbacks. Connelly said he stood behind the governor’s efforts to rein in spending, even when they came with sacrifice. “To this governor, it’s been 12 years of mismanagement, 12 years of ‘let’s borrow here’ – it’s a big shell game in Springfield,” he said. “This is a governor from the private sector who demands results and there’s going to be no more shenanigans.” Nybo was hopeful state Democrats and Republicans could come together for a final fiscal year 2016 budget by May 31, the deadline for a deal. He said the process was only at a starting point, but added that with Rauner in of-

fice, Democratic leadership would have to consider a bipartisan solution. “They have no choice – to Michael get a budget Connelly implemented, they have to have a Republican governor eventually sign off on something,” he Chris Nybo said. The cuts from last year’s budget likely won’t make this year’s any easier, Nybo said, adding it would take an effort across Illinois to make a stable state. Connelly said the governor hopes to push several bills on workers compensation, spending guidelines and more to free up finances for strapped municipalities and organizations to offset the cuts.

Education funding and Senate Bill 1 Education has remained untouched in Rauner’s proposed budget, which includes a $25 million increase in the Early Childhood Block Grant. But suburban schools may still take a huge hit in state funding under Senate Bill 1. Numbers haven’t fully emerged on the bill – Nybo said he only got information for his district April 2 – but it is similar to 2014’s controversial Senate Bill 16. The previous bill, which died without a vote, would have reallocated funds from property-rich districts to poorer ones statewide, causing many suburban districts to lose millions.

Senate Bill 1 has a similar formula, Nybo said, and schools in his district would still lose out on $40 million in the coming years. Connelly said he hopes for a more in-depth look at the school funding problem, particularly the disparity between Chicago schools and the rest of the state. “People want kids in Chicago, in Naperville, Edwardsville, Carbondale to receive a great public education, but they also want fairness and equity when it comes to the financing of it,” he said.

Future of the COD The senators also addressed another education issue that has taken the county and state by storm – the College of DuPage. The school has been beleaguered by spending and transparency scandals, leading Connelly and other legislators to demand change. Nybo said it was a governance issue stemming from a culture instilled by President Robert Breuder. “Dr. Breuder has created a culture where his own board … may have felt hindered in their ability to question what he was doing,” he said. “Any individual who is entrusted with such immense power and is running an organization as big as the College of DuPage needs to be approachable, needs to be transparent, needs to engage with the stakeholders.” Connelly has filed a bill asking for a state audit of the school’s state funds paid for by the college but has yet to hear an answer from school officials. During the turmoil, Nybo said, it is important to remember the college is still an asset to the county.

27 Roz Iaccino of Glen Ellyn Named RE/MAX Northern Illinois Rising Star of 2014

Glen Ellyn, Ill. –March 24, 2015 – The Wheaton Chamber of Commerce recently hosted an awards event to acknowledge Wheaton’s most outstanding local business members. This year’s winner in the Home Services of the Year category was Baird & Warner’s Caitlin Spencer. This award was earned through public and chamber members nominations. Over 19,000 votes were cast to determine the winner in each category. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the community, my Caitlin Spencer peers from the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and Baird & Warner,” said Spencer. “I love Wheaton and I love selling real estate. Thank you to my clients and supporters.” No stranger to awards, Baird & Warner recently named Spencer “Rookie of the Year” based on her incredible sales performance in 2014.

CHICAGO, April 2, 2015 – RE/MAX broker associate Roz Iaccino of RE/MAX Suburban, 441 Taft Ave., Glen Ellyn, Ill., was honored recently by the RE/MAX Northern Illinois real estate network with its Rising Star, Large Market Award. The Rising Star Award is given each year to RE/MAX broker associates who have held a real estate license for less than 18 months and whose productivity during the past year was clearly exceptional for a newcomer to the industry. Only the most talented and successful new agents take home this award. Roz Iaccino Iaccino’s award tabs her as the leading new RE/MAX agent in the metro Chicago real estate market. Her move into real estate was a substantial but entirely logical career shift that Iaccino made in 2013. The Wheaton resident had long been involved in the construction trades as both an electrican and mason before deciding to join her mother, an established RE/MAX broker, in real estate sales. “It has been a wonderful change,” said Iaccino. “I love my job and the people I work with. Plus, it allows me to use my knowledge of construction in many ways to help both buyers and sellers.”

Francesca’s Amici makes name for itself

Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day. And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone

cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

SOFTBALL PREVIEW

Talented Dukes transition to new coach York girls look to defend last year’s regional title By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Some things may have changed around York softball with Jennifer Bode taking over as coach, but the team she inherited should help keep the recent winning seasons going. The Dukes are off to a 5-0-1 start with wins against Benet, Conant, Wheaton North and two against Glenbard North, as well as Wednesday’s 10-10 tie against Trinity. York allowed two runs in the first three games, a 10-0 win against Benet and a doubleheader sweep of Glenbard North (1-0 and 10-2), before blasting four home runs in Monday’s 8-6 win against Conant. York has nine returners and freshman Kyra Kroll had two of the home runs Monday. Abby Solem, who also hit a home run, is among a slew of key returners on offense. “I just think they got their confidence,” Bode said. “These girls came out first up and ready to go. They wanted to hit the ball and they hit against a really good team and a really good pitcher.” Solem, who had 15 home runs in the previous two years on varsity, is back to patrol third base. Standout senior Sarah Milkowski returns behind the plate. Sarah Maciejewski (first base), Gabby Magnifico (second base), Audrey Kosman (shortstop) also return to give the Dukes a fully returning infield. Amanda Karnatz, who hit

York shortstop Audrey Kosman dives for a ground ball Wednesday in a road game against Trinity. Kosman is part of an infield that has returning players at every position. York’s fourth homer against Conant, returns in the lineup and slides over to center field to replace Angela Scalzitti, now a DePaul freshman. Isabella Jaeger also is back in the outfield. Brooke Bandy and Kosman, both seniors, will share pitching duties. Each has a shutout already, including Bandy’s 15-strikeout performance against Glenbard North on Saturday. All this returning talent

has made Bode’s transition from assistant coach, a role she occupied the past four seasons, to head varsity coach easier. “It’s definitely different, but they’ve made this great,” Bode said. “They’re a great group of kids, their energy. They’re so fun to be around. They love being here. They’re the best part of my day. You come to practice and they’re silly and they love the game. I think they don’t take them-

Addison Trail Blazers Coach: Mark Olson 2014 record: 20-15 Top players NAME Rachel Baumgartner Alex DiSilvio Kelly Delawder Carla Muell Nicolette Napoli Ari Renc

YEAR sr. sr. sr. jr. jr. sr.

Outlook: The Blazers return six play-

IC Catholic Knights Coach: Frank Reaber 2014 record: 21-16 (regional champs)

POSITION P SS 1B C

Erica Benson ebenson@shawmedia.com

Outlook: Northern Illinois-recruit Jessica Conenna leads the way for the Knights as a star two-way player. Last spring Conenna had 198 strikeouts and a 2.32 ERA in the circle and batted .570 with 37 RBIs. She is one of eight returners on the roster. Senior shortstop Gabby Curran hit .496 last year and junior catcher Melissa Gonzalez hit .396 while playing solid defense. Senior Lindsey Montoya, juniors Taylor Salvi, Vanessa Godinez and Kasey Carver and sophomore Kaitlyn Falduto also are back. Freshman Josie Lytton joins the lineup. After winning the program’s first regional since 2003 last year, the Knights are looking for more while adapting to the new Metro Suburban West conference. “After a disappointing ending last year, the girls have a goal of going downstate,” coach Frank Reaber said. “We are the smallest school in the new conference, which should help challenge us and get us ready for a deep run in the playoffs.”

Timothy Christian Trojans Coach: Aaron Moore 2014 record: 6-22 Top players NAME Kaitlyn Gehrke Emily Gifford Hope Zastrow

YEAR sr. so. so.

POSITION 1B P/IF C/3B

Outlook: The Trojans debuted March 19 against Nazareth, a 10-0 loss, but didn’t play again until Tuesday against Walther Christian. Second-year coach Aaron Moore has a tough task ahead with just one senior on the roster. That senior, Kaitlyn Gehrke, is a standout athlete in three sports for Timothy. She returns at first base. Sophomores Emily Gifford and Hope Zastrow are key returners. Gifford will pitch and play the infield. Despite the young group, Moore hopes the team can make a strong first impression in the new Metro Suburban East. “Our goal is win our side of the conference,” Moore said. “With the conference realignment, we definitely have some opportunities to win games and we’re excited about the young group we have.”

Plenty of promise for York, AT boys By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Most high school spring sports take place outside, but boys volleyball action is still heating up indoors. York and Addison Trail have reason to be excited about the rest of the season. Here’s a look at what both teams bring to the court:

Talented Dukes squad hopes to improve on 21-win season York returns several players from a team that went 21-15 a year ago, and coach Ken Dowdy is hyping the team’s ability. “I really like the potential of this squad,” Dowdy said. “While lacking in experience in some positions, it has the greatest skill set of any team I’ve had in five years.” York’s outside hitters should be a strength with junior returners Jake Wendell (98 kills last year) and 6-foot4 Bobby Krissinger (166 kills, 111 blocks). Both will play the full rotation. Senior middle Casey McNamara is another returner. Junior newcomers Jake Privett and Andrew Lewland should add to the attack as well. Senior John Kopach takes over at setter. Senior Kevin Peronto moves from defensive specialist to libero

this season. Three others, senior Zach Mathiasen and juniors Gordon Johnson and Danny Bolivar, also drew praise from Dowdy. “Our main goal is to put ourselves in the position to win our first regional since 2003,” Dowdy said.

Senior Dickmann looks to lead Blazers to another strong season After winning 33 matches and a regional last year, Addison Trail is hoping for even more success. Senior outside hitter Alex Dickmann is one of the best hitters in the state, and four three-year varsity players return in outsides Johnny Valentini and Zach Vaca and middles Jack Vrchota and Kannon Nelms, a junior. Senior Joey Nasti is the new setter and sophomore newcomer Arlind Rojba is the new libero, pushing Vaca from libero to outside hitter. The Blazers should benefit from a new sectional assignment, which moves them from a largely northwest suburban sectional to one mostly comprised of Chicago schools. “We have won five regionals in the past seven years and the boys are working hard to take the next step, which would be a first trip to state,” coach Chad Grant said. “Expectations are higher than ever.”

ers from last year but will need someone to step up at pitcher in order to post another winning record. AT won 20 games last year and Crystal Marinelli, now playing for Elmhurst College, was a huge part of that as a two-way player. The Blazers, who were 3-4 entering Thursday’s scheduled game against Hoffman Estates, only return 15 percent of their innings pitched from last spring. Junior and varsity newcomer Alyssa McMahan and senior two-way player Rachel Baumgartner will share pitching duties. Offensively, there is more back with senior center fielder Ari Renc, a two-time all-conference player, leading the way. Seniors Kelly Delawder, Alex DiSilvio and Baumgartner and junior Carla Muell have multiple years of varsity experience. In addition to McMahan, senior Natalie Palermo and sophomores Marie Baumgartner and Jessica Bach are notable newcomers. “Our hope is to be competitive and continue to make strides as a program,” head coach Mark Olson said. “This is my third season as coach and each year the girls in the program have made strides on and off the field. ... The year prior to taking over, the team had won three games and we have won 11 and 20, respectively. As a program, we want to earn the respect of our opponents.”
