ELMHURST – Someone with a CPR certificate might be able to handle a physical emergency. But who handles a mental health emergency? A collection of local officials, school district educators, medical leaders and the Elmhurst police and fire departments attended a seminar Wednesday on the Mental Health First Aid program designed to answer that question. It’s part of an effort to build a bridge between Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and the Elmhurst community. Mary Lou Mastro, president and CEO of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, kicked off the presentation with one message in mind: to create the conversation of mental illness and a support system in the community. “If we can reach out, if we can identify and intervene early, it can make a huge difference in the life of a person,” Mastro said. MHFA community liaison Denise Elsbree explained the certificate program has a dual purpose – to find participants interested in learning about mental illness and to encourage those participants to become trainers to pay the lessons forward. Elsbree said MHFA’s goal is to become just as popular as those with CPR certificates because recognizing the signs of mental illness and knowing how to handle the situation is important. Mastro and Elsbree both discussed the details of the program, which includes an eight-hour session taught by two trainers. Elsbree said class participants will learn a five-step action plan known as “ALGEE,” which serves as a guide to assess the rise for suicide or harm, listen without judgment, give reassurance and information, and encourage appropriate professional help and selfhelp strategies.

Gina Sharp, president of Linden Oaks at Edward, explains the Mental Health First Aid program being introduced at a breakfast meeting Wednesday hosted by Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Gina Sharp, the president of Linden Oaks, the behavioral unit at Edward Hospital and Health Services in Naperville, joined Mastro and Elsbree to advocate for the program’s “grass-roots efforts.” Sharp said Edward Hospital adapted MHFA in 2011 and has 50 active instructors who have taught in nearby colleges, schools and faith-based organizations. She added the requirements to becoming an instructor involve attending a five-day training course, passing an instructor test and teach-

ing at least three eight-hour courses every year. Mastro said the biggest benefit of participating in MHFA is to minimize the stigma that surrounds mental illness. She added the mental health community is underserved, and the “greatest tragedy” is that 50 percent of adults and about 70 to 80 percent of children are not receiving any treatment for mental illness. Jennifer Conwell, assistant health coordinator at Elmhurst Healthcare, helps place nurses in District 205. She said the purpose of the program is to empower nurses and faculty members, especially when dealing with students. Conwell said it teaches them how to ask the important questions without hesitation so they can respond and provide the proper care immediately. “And when people are in crisis, law enforcement is called,” Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth said. Ruth said he is interested in becoming more involved with the program as a way to help improve the city’s law enforcement. He said Mental Health First Aid would teach him and Elmhurst police officers to become more prepared for those types of situations, which would ultimately provide better service for the community. Mastro, along with Elsbree and Sharp, said taking initiative as an entire community is crucial in the program’s success and that is a work in progress. “You can’t have good health, if you don’t have good mental health,” Mastro said.

ELMHURST – In a unanimous decision, the Elmhurst City Council approved a plan at its meeting April 6 to help residents affected by flooding in the city. As part of the flood property buyout plan, a residential property will be eligible for buyout if it is located in a watershed or flooding area approved by DuPage County and has experienced reported “surface water flooding that has affected the structure” more than once.

One resident the plan should help is Tracy Fleischer, who spoke during the meeting’s public comment portion and urged the council to move forward with the plan. Fleischer, who lives on Washington Street, said real estate agents have refused to put her house on the market because the structure’s damages are beyond repair, and the only choice she has left to stop living in fear of flooding is to sell her property to a builder. The city’s plan specifies the homeowner must have tried to “flood-proof” the property by replacing doors, com-

pletely removing doors or windows, installing walls, or sealing the exterior of the house with cement. In addition, the plan indicates the property should be located next to at least two properties to “provide an even greater public benefit.” The damages must fit the criteria of the DuPage Countywide Stormwater and Flood Plain Ordinance. After an evaluation, the city will take further steps to place the property on the wait list before making a final decision. Fifth Ward Alderman Chris Healy was absent from the meeting.

A big stride for independence came this year when the school allowed the program’s students to live on campus in the residential halls. “That’s a huge thing for us because we’ve always been a commuter program up until this school year,” Ahlberg said. Five ELSA students live at Dinkmeyer Hall, a residential hall at Elmhurst College. ELSA Housing Coordinator Jana Cannata said next year, they expect to have twice the amount. “If we want to help these kids live independently, then it would help if we had them actually living independently. That means moving out of their

house, having a roommate and doing those kinds of things,” Ahlberg said. Cannata said building that support system is key to helping ELSA students, as well as any college student who is living away from home for the first time, and that’s where the community advisers step in. Community advisers are like resident advisers, but they are trained to pay closer attention to ELSA students and encourage them to join clubs and participate in school activities, she said. Deters’ dorm room is spacious, equipped with all of the college essentials and a couple sports car posters hanging above his bed. Even though graduation is still a couple years away, Deters said he hopes to one day continue his education and attend Universal Technical Institute, an automotive trade school, and work with cars. For now, Deters leaves students like him with a piece of advice: Consider going to college. “College will fit you in a position for a better career,” Deters said.

gaining access to financial aid, ELSA has come a long way in the last decade. Being a full-time ELSA student costs about $30,000 per year, and with housing expenses, it adds up to $40,000, he said. “Helping families pay for this will always be an obstacle for them,” said Ahlberg, who noted years before receiving financial aid opportunities, families had to pay out of pocket. ELSA Assistant Director Linda Gilbert said as a whole, the program is committed to creating avenues for students to become more independent. Like most college students, especially those nearing graduation, independence is gained through job hunting, she said. A portion of the curriculum is dedicated to helping students strengthen their skills, build their confidence and research possible career choices through volunteer and internship opportunities, Gilbert said, adding professors make the effort to help prepare them for interviews, “teach them the lingo” – like saying “yes” instead of

ELMHURST – Elmhurst College sophomore Chris Deters is a “de facto mayor” around campus. Deters, 25, just knows everyone, and everyone knows him, said Tim Ahlberg, the college’s assistant director of admissions. The two met a few years ago at a Transitions Fair, an event for special education students and their families to learn about services available to them once they are ineligible for school district-based special education programs. Deters was a student at Downers Grove South High School, and Ahlberg attended the fair to inform potential college students about the Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy, a four-year certificate program at Elmhurst College for students with intellectual disabilities. Ahlberg said the program branches into three elements: academic and career exploration, independent living skills, and social and recreational skills, and they all have reading, writing and math merit. From fast food chain Culver’s to retail store TJ Maxx, Deters worked a string of jobs before making the decision to go to college, the student said. Now, Deters is living the college experience – going to class, holding down a couple part-time campus jobs, hanging out with friends and living with a roommate in a dorm – which is what the ELSA program is all about. “What we’re trying to do is have these kids live independently, hold meaningful employment and have a meaningful college experience,” Ahlberg said. “ELSA is their major.” The program, which has about 30 to 35 students, turned 10 years old Tuesday, and to celebrate, it hosted its annual student showcase ELSA-Palooza, complete with a musical performance and a raffle that benefits scholarships. Ahlberg said from building a bigger curriculum that allows students to take traditional college courses to

Addison Avenue space attracts multiple proposals By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Two city-owned parcels at 138 and 142 N. Addison Ave. are up for grabs, and two developers are battling for the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee’s approval. The two developers faced aldermen Dannee Polomsky, Scott Levin and Mark Mulliner and Mayor Steve Morley to propose building either a fitness center or a multistory residential complex on the 20,000-square-foot space.

Fitness proposal For architect Joseph Antunovic of Antunovic Associates, the message to the City Council was simple: to make downtown Elmhurst home for residents and newcomers. Antunovic and Fitness Formula Clubs founder Gale Landers painted a picture of a three-story, upscale fitness center following a similar makeup of their Chicago, Oak Park and Park Ridge locations. Addison Trail to present spring play, ‘The Curious Savage’ SPONSORED BY

From April 9 to 11, Addison Trail will present its spring play, “The Curious Savage.” The comedic play tells the story of Ethel Savage, a woman whose husband recently died and left her $10 million. Her stepchildren want to use the money for selfish reasons and for their own benefit, so she buries the money to keep it from them. Frustrated with her actions, the stepchildren have Savage committed to a sanatorium in hopes she will “come to her senses.” The show contrasts the kindness and loyalty of the patients in the sanatorium with the vanity of “respectable” public figures. According to www.dramatists.com, “The audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.”

“A former Addison Trail student suggested this play, and I knew it would be the perfect spring comedy,” said Director Anna Jakubka. “It’s a cute, funny show.” Junior Heidi Scheleski plays Savage and said audience members can look forward to a lot of laughs and jokes throughout the play. Senior Hannah Yurek plays Fairy May, a patient Savage befriends at the sanatorium. Yurek said it’s bittersweet to take the stage at Addison Trail for the last time. “Being involved with theatre at Addison Trail during my four years here has taught me the importance of perseverance,” Yurek said. “I’ve learned that if you work hard and stay dedicated, you’ll eventually get the roles you want.”

director of sales and marketing Gail Payonk and architect David Kennedy of Perkins, Pryde and Kennedy. The four-story structure would include either 40 luxury condominiums or 52 one- to two-bedroom apartments, attracting retirees and young professionals, Hughes said, adding they are catering to those who are looking to downsize or acquire a second home. Payonk said the structure’s concept lends itself to a “service-oriented lifestyle” accessorized with a concierge service and deluxe amenities like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and designer fixtures. The condominiums are priced between $300,000 to $500,000 while the apartment rent would cost an average of $2,041 per month, she added. Morley expressed concern about being able to attract condominium buyers following the recent housing market struggles. A more optimistic Hughes added that his plan includes acquiring two adjacent private properties to the north and south. That would allow him to expand to a total of 65 condominium units or 70 apartments.

How to improve your business SEO and reach customers with sponsored content SPONSORED BY

By J.Tom Shaw Sponsored Content is a form of marketing that offers a business the opportunity to reach a targeted audience in a new way. While sponsored content can take on many forms, typically the method consists of articles and video created on behalf of a business. The content is labeled as sponsored, and linked from a news or entertainment website back to the business website. The business is featured in the content, and recognized as the sponsor. If done correctly, sponsored content can be very effective in reaching consumers since it is delivered in the same form and function as other content on the website, such as news. This method, commonly referred to as native content, has taken off in the online publishing industry in recent years. The content is displayed in relevant categories, and written in such a way to improve search engine results. So if someone is interested in car maintenance, they might come across an article that interests them in the local newspaper website, or they might conduct a search on Google and

find the article that way. In either case, the viewer is then exposed to the advertiser’s message by reading the article, and viewing the accompanying photo or video. There are some important elements to make sure that your sponsored content is effective as possible. First, make sure your content is created and displayed to improve your search results, or search engine optimization, SEO. Think about what words people use to search for your product or service on Google, and then use those keywords in your content and headlines. Create value with your content by being informative and engaging. Your article is not an advertisement, so don’t turn off your reader by beating them over the head with a sales message. Rather, offer something of value, such as a helpful tip related to your product or service. Finally, make sure your video and article reflect your business’ personality. Are you reflecting a fun, personable image? Keep the copy conversational and light so people aren’t intimidated or turned off by your message.

Election results reveal two truths about us Results from the April 7 Consolidated Elections revealed two truths about us as an electorate. First, the vast majority of registered voters remain unapologetically apathetic no matter what burning issues are at hand. Second, the vast majority of the minority who do vote want to keep government’s hand out of their pockets. COMMUNITY Less than 600,000 votes VOICE were cast in Chicago’s mayJohn oral runoff, making it nearly Quigley impossible for challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia to unseat incumbent Rahm Emanuel, who won 56 percent to 44 percent. When voter turnout is 40 percent or lower, as it was, that surely favors the current office holder. In DuPage County, for all of the legislative scrutiny and public outrage over the severance package for outgoing College of DuPage President Robert Breuder, only 17.3 percent of registered voters cast ballots for the Board of Trustees. The self-named Clean Slate triumvirate of Deanne Mazzochi (Elmhurst), Frank Napolitano (Bloomingdale) and Charles Bernstein (Wheaton) won seats among an egg carton full of candidates that included two incumbents (Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage) and former Illinois Rep. Sandra Pihos, who ran a close fourth. In Elmhurst, where only four of seven City Council seats were contested, voter turnout in those races ranged from a pedestrian high of 26.5 percent to a stunningly low 16.4 percent, which was equaled by two of the three incumbent aldermen running uncontested. Winning vote totals in the contested races ranged from a high of 652 in Ward 2 to a low of 439 in Ward 1, where Mark Sabatino edged out Susan Smentek by 39 votes for a vacated seat on a 23.1 percent voter turnout. Across Illinois, those voting overwhelmingly defeated a variety of ballot propositions by municipalities, school districts, park districts and other taxing bodies. In DuPage, new facilities for the village of Downers Grove garnered less than 13 percent, bonds for St. Charles’ Park District earned less than 20 percent, bonds for Westmont’s School District 201 received only 34 percent and a Fox River fire tax fell short at nearly 47 percent, while the village of Westmont’s non-home rule retail sales tax of 0.5 percent passed by a mere 37 votes. In Hinsdale’s High School District 86, voters supported no work stoppages at nearly 61 percent and performance evaluations at more than 68 percent. In Warrenville, nearly 89 percent of those voting want the fire trustees to be elected instead of appointed. Ironically, only 21.4 percent of those registered actually voted on that proposition.

College of DuPage Board of Trustees candidates Charles Bernstein and Frank Napolitano celebrate their victory April 7 with Deanne Mazzochi (not shown).

We should all take a moment to thank all of the candidates who threw their hats in the ring to run in the April 7 municipal election. Public service at the local level is often a thankless task, and with the negative attention it generates, not to mention the low voter turnout, it’s impressive that so many people want to take part. Hopefuls who failed to garner enough votes to gain a seat may feel that they accomplished nothing, but that’s completely untrue. Those who did make it to the polls were no doubt gratified to have options when they picked who would lead local village, school district, park district and other boards that serve their communities. The advice to “look people straight in the eye” may not be as good and straightforward as it seems. Most would agree that looking away from a conversation partner can convey feelings of intimidation or a lack of confidence. However, being too close and too intense can also have an adverse effect, in which case it may help to literally take a step back to solve any proximity issues. Regarding the notion that “liars never look you straight in the eye,” research actually shows that the reverse is true. According to a recent study, people who told lies were much more likely to look people in the eyes in order to gauge whether or not they were being believed. Teachers turn forum into teachable moment By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – For the past eight years, Elmhurst College has hosted its Governmental Forum as a way to create a conversation among civic leaders, local officials and students. With more than 500 guests tucked inside an ornate banquet hall April 9 at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace, guest speaker U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, and moderator Bruce Dold, a Chicago Tribune editor, spoke like old friends in front of the crowd, treading the lines of this year’s theme: America’s Challenges: At Home and Abroad. Hidden in the crowd comprised of mostly local officials in the DuPage County area were small clusters of students from York Community High School in Elmhurst and the sponsoring college. Accompanied by the high school’s social studies teachers and the college’s political science and urban studies professors, the students watched their curriculum come to life. York history teacher Lindsey DiTomasso explained the 13 students who attended the forum were nominated by the school’s Social Studies Department.

of the nominated students. During the forum’s Q&A portion, the 18-year-old submitted a question addressing the U.S. Navy’s recent budget cuts that reduced its fleet size. Kramer wanted to know how the lack of funding would affect the Navy’s responsibilities. Kramer said he was disappointed in the senator’s response because Kirk “more or less deflected” the question, he said. He added overall he thought the experience was worthwhile – an opportunity that humanized the political process. James Treccia, 21, and Miranda Huber, 22, were two of 30 urban studies and Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com political science students from Elmhurst Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley (center) listens April 9 as U.S. Sen. ELMHURST – A former associate pastor at an Elmhurst church has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl during the course of four to five years, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release. Darin Evans, 43, formerly of the West Suburban Community Church, pleaded guilty April 9 to one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, in front of Judge Daniel Guerin, the release stated. Evans sexually assaulted the girl while he served as her youth minister and counselor, according to the release. The assaults began when she

was 16 years old and took place at multiple locations, including his vehicle, public places and a church-sponsored youth retreat. The assaults came to light in February 2013 when the victim, who was no longer a minor, came forward, the release stated. On March 19, 2013, Evans was charged with the offense. He has been out on bail after posting the necessary $30,000 of his $300,000 bond, according to the release. He was taken into custody after today’s proceedings to begin serving his sentence. Evans will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, the release stated.

Kirk said he supports the comprehensive immigration reform bill to make sure people can “come out of the shadows and put down long-term roots and long-term investments.” During the forum, Dold asked Kirk about the Republican Party’s internal conflict to agree on various issues like immigration reform. “I will give you an analogy. Think of the state of Illinois as a wagon. And think of that wagon now [with] two horses. I would say if the two horses are nipping at each other constantly, that wagon cannot go very far,” Kirk said, maintaining he aims to serve as a bridge for Republicans and Democrats. That analogy is a lesson the Elmhurst educators wanted their students to learn. Jessica Weldon, chair of York’s Research and Social Sciences Division, said she wanted students to understand policymaking is multifaceted, and there are different angles and pieces to consider before making a sound decision. “Democracy is in the process,” Weldon said.

Consumer Tips

(BPT) - The big move - it should be in all-caps and announced with a deep, authoritative voice. THE BIG MOVE. And it’s coming to your family soon. It might be from one house to another across town, or it might involve crossing many state lines. No matter the distance, amount of belongings or number of people, your big move is going to be a big deal. There are ways to plan for your move so the big event doesn’t overwhelm you. Here are five moving tips from Penske Truck Rental, which has been helping customers complete their big moves for more than 40 years.

now, and it will make moving day much easier. 2. Stock up on supplies - Big boxes might seem like a great idea because they can hold so much stuff, but what happens when you try to lift one and carry it down a flight of steps? Stock up on boxes of multiple sizes, but keep in mind that smaller is much easier to carry. Also stock up on foam and bubble wrap to protect your fragile items, a good supply of packing tape and bold markers for labeling boxes. You’ll also want to have moving blankets and hand trucks to make it easier to transport your items.

1. Less is better - The less you have to move, the easier your move will be on your body and your wallet. It will also be easier to fit everything into your new house. While packing, create three piles. The first is your “must-go” pile. The second is your “must-sell” pile, which includes anything you haven’t used in the last year, anything you have multiples of and anything you just don’t want any more. The third is the “must-throw” pile, and it contains anything that can’t be sold at a garage sale or donated. Start creating these piles

3. Rent a truck - One trip makes the big move simple, even if you’re just moving across town. Penske Truck Rental guarantees a truck for every reservation. Most movers find the 12- or 16-foot truck perfect for moving a few large items or the contents of a small condo or apartment. For guidance with larger moves or with your truck selection, visit www. PenskeTruckRental.com.

5. Safety and security - Trucks are taller, wider, heavier and require more stopping distance than the vehicle you are used to driving. Take extra precaution, especially when the truck is loaded. Watch out for low-hanging tree branches and building overhangs, and use extra caution when cornering. To protect your belongings, park in well-lit areas and padlock the rear door. To make sure you’ve got everything you need on moving day, create a travel bag for keeping important paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, drinks and snacks close at hand. For a complete list of moving tips, visit www.PenskeTruckRental.com.

4. Pack smart - Load the heaviest items on the truck

first. When you’ve got a sturdy base of the heaviest items, you can start stacking on top. This is when it’s handy to list a box’s contents on its side. If you have friends and family helping, they’ll know not to set books on top of your china.

York’s Sarah Milkowski is safe at home April 8 in a road game against Trinity. A lifelong catcher, Milkowski is a team leader at the position for the Dukes.

Magnificent Milkowski By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Catcher is a position unlike any other in softball, so the players who are drawn to it tend to be a bit different. In some ways that’s the case with York’s Sarah Milkowski. The Dukes’ fiery leader is a vocal, Sarah aggressive back- Milkowski stop and one of the best players on the team. “She’s awesome behind the

plate,” York coach Jennifer Bode said. “She really takes control of the field. She really brings the team together in many ways so she’s a great leader to have out there behind the plate.” Milkowski, a senior headed to USC to be an engineering major, first played catcher when no one else wanted to play the position on a youth team. It’s been a perfect match ever since. Milkowski not only has remained at the position, but has fallen in love with it. She’s not shy about trying to pick runners off with quick snap throws after pitches. “I love being able to see the

field and have a command of it,” she said. “It really just destroys momentum, it totally swings it if you can pick someone off and throw someone out going to second.” She got one of her pickoffs in Wednesday’s game against Lake Park, but the Dukes still lost 9-8. It was York’s first loss of the season and a very sloppy one with seven errors and 14 players left on base. The defensive struggles were nothing new, but previously York was able to overcome that with hitting. The Dukes tied Trinity 10-10 and beat Wheaton North 13-11 in other high-scor-

ing affairs. “We’re really struggling in the field a little bit,” Bode said. “I think for every team there needs to be a game where you’re brought back down to earth and you have to take a look and say ‘Now it’s time to get some things done.’ I think this needed to happen.” On the upside, the offense has been rolling. In York’s first eight games the team has scored seven or more runs seven times and is averaging 8.5 runs per game. Eight players in York’s lineup already have multiple multi-hit games. Gabby Mag-

nifico has five such games and Milkowski, Abby Solem and Amanda Karnatz have pulled off the feat four times. “We’re hitting the snot out of the ball,” Milkowski said. “It’s crazy, one through nine, all the way, even anyone on the bench is ready to hit and ready to go. We just need to translate that into the field. We said in our team huddle we could be steamrolling people and we should be because our hitting doesn’t give up. “This is one of the most fun teams I’ve ever played on. I couldn’t be more happy and more proud of all these girls.”

were part of a wild 10-minute span where the teams combined for four goals. York trailed 1-0 and six minutes later had a 2-1 lead, only to see the Huskies tie the match another minute after that. Bianchi and fellow senior Alyssa Kovatchis are proven goal scorers after being the team’s top two scorers last year. Sophomore Jenna Lundgren and junior Madison Casey also are working in the attack to give the Dukes plenty of options to put fear into op-

posing defenses. Tuesday’s seven goals were the third time this season York scored more than five in a match. The previous times came against Joliet West and Proviso West, while Lincoln-Way East already has a tournament title this season when the Griffins won the 32team Windy City Classic. “I think we’re doing really good,” Bianchi said. “We just need to find our feet better. I think we all know who’s good at what, who’s successful at

what they do, whether it’s play Alyssa to her feet or someone playing me long to run to the ball. We’re still learning. We’re still working on stuff, but I think we’re coming together really well.” The defense is still a work in progress, coping with the loss of standout senior defender Jamie Kovatchis because of a knee injury just before the season. Emily Mueller, Kaylin Kenny, Jenna Dvorak and Annalisa Lappo are manning the defense.

SCHAUMBURG – Saturday’s PepsiCo Showdown opener left an unsatisfying taste for York’s girls soccer team. After losing in penalty kicks to Hersey, the Dukes apparently took out their frustration on Lincoln-Way East to the tune of seven goals Tuesday. The 7-2 victory against the Griffins got York back on track after an inconsistent start to the season.

In the match against Hersey, York scored twice in the first half and had plenty of chances for more. However, they were tied 2-2 at half and neither team created much in front of goal after that. York eventually lost 3-1 in the penalty shootout. “Tale of two halves,” coach Don Vana said. “We played good for a while and then we disappeared for a little bit. I’m not too sure why that is.” Jessica Bianchi scored both goals against Hersey, which
