SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation’s sixth annual Casino Night was a record-breaking event, with nearly 400 attendees and more silent auction items than ever before. The event helped to raise money for the foundation, allowing it to continue to provide financial assistance to the families of children with disabilities or serious medical conditions. Because of the success of the recent Casino Night on March 21 at Diplomat West in Elmhurst, the 2016 event will be expanded into a larger area at the venue to accommodate the growing crowd and more gaming tables, seating and food stations.

ELMHURST – IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst launched Knights Drive Safe this school year to teach students how to be safe behind the wheel. The three-month initiative is part of the Operation Teen Safe Driving Program, a statewide program that provides schools with a $2,000 grant fund.
Business teacher Stephanie Rybarczyk supervised the student-run program, which centered on performing a monthly seat belt check as students entered the high school’s parking lot. Students also raised awareness for seat belt safety by hosting a social media contest to promote safe driving habits. “The point of the program is to get
kids involved as much as possible with understanding the importance of driving safely and the obligation they have once they get behind the wheel,” Rybarczyk stated in a school news release. IC Catholic Prep ranked fifth among participating Illinois schools, and they have been able to earn an additional grant fund to support safe driving habits.
CORRECTION A story in the March 27 Elmhurst Suburban Life about potential changes in state funding for municipalities misspelled Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley’s name. Suburban Life regrets the error.

Dunckel recalled the first couple of practices after the decision were a mess, and the next week and a half was just as chaotic. With eight individual schedules and midterms just around the corner, the only time The Quiet Hours could practice was after quiet hours – starting at 11 p.m. and ending about 1 a.m. Sitting shoulder-to-shoul-

While they all have been friends since the beginning of the fall semester, their relationships have reached a whole new level of trust, honesty and vulnerability, Dunckel said. Importantly, they are unafraid to tell each other if something does not sound right or if someone is off-key.

And for this debut, they just couldn’t afford to be off. With only days to prepare, Michael Pelotti knew the feeling. The 18-year-old Elmhurst College student and local rapper was a close friend of Blaszak and Wiggin. Sansone, Pelotti’s stage name, was one of five local acts scheduled to perform at the House of Blues alongside The Quiet Hours. He reflected on their collaboration as bridging two different worlds – hip hop and alternative. Through trial and error, Pelotti and The Quiet Hours found the rhythm to marry their mix-matched genres and performed “Waterfalls,” a noted number by ’90s R&B trio TLC. Working with each of the eight members in the band became an educational experi-

ELMHURST – After reaching out to a local promoter for upcoming gigs in the Chicago area, 19-year-old Elmhurst College student Scott Blaszak received an unexpected response that seemed too good to pass up. Without hesitation, he sent a Facebook message to his seven bandmates saying they were just offered a spot to play at the House of Blues in Chicago. Vocalists Brenna Dunckel, 20, and Brandy Benak, 19, were sitting next to each other in a night class when they received the notification on their phone and the following text message: “Let’s meet in 15 minutes.” The Quiet Hours, a fitting name for the college students who received a citation for jamming too loudly in the residence hall after hours, piled themselves into Blaszak’s dorm room. Doubts, concerns and sudden bursts of excitement filled even the tiniest crevices of the basement room. The conversation slowly turned from it’s impossible to play on short notice to how could they turn down a gig at the House of Blues, Dunckel said. At this point, the about fiveday-old band had just one day to make the decision and 11 days to get its act together for the March 15 performance. “We had no material of our own,” said Blaszak, the
ence because he had the opportunity to see what he could pull from each person, Pelotti said. Dunckel recalled the hours leading up to their 8 p.m. performance were overwhelming. Exhausted after a string of late-night practices and sleep deprivation, the band members met for an early breakfast to go over the itinerary for the day: sorting out tickets, loading two cars with their equipment and arriving at the House of Blues at about 1 p.m. for load-in. The energy slowly set in once they were on their way to the venue, Dunckel said. Enamored by the history of the House of Blues, the firsttime performers stopped dead in their tracks to stare at the walls, scribbled with signatures and stamped with band stickers of the greatest and most influential musicians. They wasted no time in signing their name right above a favorite pop punk band Mayday Parade. “We’re just these kids from Elmhurst,” Dunckel said. Blaszak added he has seen his favorite bands play at the House of Blues, but not once did he imagine he would be the one performing on the stage. His description of the humbling experience was mirrored by other members of the band. “It was really inspirational for us just to see all of our family and friends there supporting us,” Wiggin said. Now, hungrier than ever for their next performance, The Quiet Hours are focused on creating their own original material, making their music available online, having a social media presence and playing more shows.

Playwright Engling discusses his play By F. AMANDA TUGADE
If you go
atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Friendship is a secret language shared by two individuals who can communicate only through honesty and reverence. It envelopes a type of love that stands the test of time and never finds fault in the desire for personal growth. For Richard Engling, that theme is the foundation of his play “Anna in the Afterlife,” a warranted tribute to his friendship with Fern Chertkow based on the fictional characters of his first novel, “Visions of Anna.” “I think in many ways it’s a play about love and a play about life. It’s a play about the inevitable losses and how we deal with that,” said Engling, an Elmhurst native. “It’s a play about the legacies we leave and about the way we approach living life.” He was inspired to write the novel soon after Chertkow took her own life in October 1988. The play followed several years later, as a separate testament. In the preface of his novel, Engling openly discusses the evolution of their 12-year friendship, which began in a fiction-writing seminar in graduate school. “That was a really formative time in

est secrets, and you felt grateful to be so known, and to know her in return.” He also revealed knowing about Chertkow’s “bouts with depression” and that she sought help to deal with them. “You always wonder what happened – if something could have been done,” he said, still mystified by the end result. With “Anna in the Afterlife,” Engling embodies the male lead role Matthew, an unlikely move for most playwrights. “It’s odd that Richard wrote it and is also playing himself in the play,” said Sheila Willis, who plays Engling’s counterpart, Anna, Matthew’s love interest. “It’s a really unique opportunity to know the truth.” Engling said playing the dual role of playwright and actor is an exploration. “You’d really discover things that you haven’t thought through in writing,” he said. “As you approach it as an actor, it’s a different exercise. It’s a different part of the brain that has to come into play.” Willis added typically, playwrights have a strong grip around their scripts
and disallow for any changes the directors and the casts may have, but Engling left his trust in their hands. Like Chertkow, Willis asked Engling many questions to prepare for her role. She began to nitpick characteristics Chertkow possessed, like learning what type of music she listened to and knowing what she valued most in life. Director Susan Padveen said Willis’ “worldly weariness” and “innocence” brought life to Anna’s role. A role, Engling added, Willis performed with a lot of heart. As for acting opposite of Engling, Willis said, “He’s there in the moment, in the scene with you because things happen.” One of the aspects Willis particularly enjoys about her role is the age-defining moments she shares with Engling’s character, Matthew. In less than a page, Willis said, she jumps from age 25 to 36. The 11-year span peeks into the beginning of their friendship in graduate school to later in their lives when they occasionally see each other, a measurement of the maturity in their relationship. Engling relies on Padveen to set the stage of the afterlife, an unknown world that knows no rules or holds no boundaries. Padveen is committed to creating this “tech-heavy” performance, a world that is dependent on light, sound, projections and music all for the sake of this message: What are the things that make life worthwhile? With friends, Engling said, the time is worth the investment. For friendship means often searching for new ways to reconnect but always looking back.

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers that you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total
of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. If you haven’t voted already, you’re going to want to weigh in. You can see what 11 of the 12 candidates have to say, both incumbents and challengers, at http://shawurl. com/1tfx. Make sure you’re informed so you can help get this great school back on course.

COD voting reminder One would hope it is not necessary to remind voters that the two members of the [College of DuPage] Board of Trustees who voted in favor of the [Robert] Breuder buyout and who are running for re-election to the board have proven themselves to be unacceptable for board membership. With their votes they made it clear it was easier for them to soak the taxpayers who are not responsible for their mismanagement than to deal with the wrath of Mr. Breuder, had he been denied what he wanted. We also need to keep this in mind when the 2017 election rolls around should two more of these alleged public servants decide to run for re-election to the board.
COD board needs PR firm?
Machine-style politics in DuPage What’s going on with the DuPage County Republican organization with the consolidation election upon us? DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and Regional Superintendent Darlene Ruscitti have been appointed to the governor task force on consolidation. The big question is will they have the stomach to end the high spending synonymous with Illinois government? It should be noted the April 7 election is designated nonpartisan. Then why has the Republican leadership endorsed certain Republican candidates. Why are they going to throw their full financial support of the party behind these candidates and

Hillary Clinton could be queen Hillary Clinton kept all her emails, personal and government related, on a private server in her home when she was secretary of state. This was in violation of a 2002 federal law that directed all government-related email on government servers. Later, many of her emails were subpoenaed. She alone decided which emails to give up and which to keep. Hundreds of subpoenaed emails were never given up. Recently, it was revealed her private server has been totally erased. If she can get away with the destruction of subpoenaed material, which according to TV personality Judge Andrew Napolitano, is called obstruction of justice, then she shouldn’t be president – she should be queen of the USA. A monarch does not have to follow laws or a silly constitution. She is well qualified to be our queen.

Two College of DuPage board members currently running for re-election stressed transparency as one of the most pressing issues facing the college. Yet, they are part of the six-member clique that consistently voted to increase Robert Breuder’s pay and perks and finally to give him the platinum severance package while stonewalling any attempts by taxpayers and news organizations for an explanation of their actions. Now the same board clique has hired an outside public relations firm at a cost of $250 an hour for communication counsel, media relations and messaging strategies. Question: When have you ever known a public relations firm to communicate anything but glowing reports for its client while burying as deeply as possible its flaws?

ADAPTING TO NEW LENSES Older adults who are getting new eyeglasses with significant increases in prescription strength should take their time getting used to their new lenses. The same recommendation holds for seniors who are making a switch from single-vision lenses to bifocals or progressive lenses. A period of adjustment is advised since new glasses may present older eyeglass wearers with images that may appear magnified or distorted at first. As a result, they may find it difficult to navigate stairs that may appear sloped, with steps that appear to be closer, further away, smaller, or larger than they actually are. If seniors experience difficulty adapting to bifocal or progressive lenses, they might want to consider getting a second pair of single-vision lenses for outdoor use. For more information about eyewear, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We offer the latest in frame styles and lens technology at competitive prices, and we can provide the thinnest, lightest, most smudge- and scratch-resistant lenses to fit almost any style frame you desire. Our experienced frame stylists will make sure you get the look you want, from traditional to contemporary to just plain fun. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. If seniors experience difficulty walking up or down stairs while wearing bifocals or progressive lenses, they might want to tuck their chins into their chests in order to view the stairs through the distance vision area of their lenses.

Real Estate News Ronald McDonald House in Central DuPage County teams up with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office Wheaton, IL – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office visited the Central DuPage County Ronald McDonald House to participate in their Meals from the Heart program. This is the second time Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office, in conjunction with the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports local initiatives, has prepared meals for residents and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the house in both February and March of 2015.
The Meals from the Heart program was developed for families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are being treated at Central DuPage Hospital. Many of the residents live miles away from the hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House allows them to stay close to the hospital. Volunteers are able to come in on a particular date to prepare meals for the residents staying in the home. “I just want to say that the Meals from the Heart program is a fantastic program,” Vice President and Managing Broker, Ken Spengel of Berkshire Hathaway
KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office said. “When the idea was presented at an office meeting to see if anyone wanted to go to the house and prepare meals for the residents, the response was unanimous. We were able to have a great time cooking and laughing, then we sat down and shared a meal with the residents of the house. There aren’t enough words to describe what this program does for these people who are going through a difficult time. We will be doing it again in April. Then in June we will be grilling during the company wide week of kindness.”

York (1-0-2) later tied Lemont 0-0 Wednesday to finish the tournament. “Considering it was only our second game, I thought we did really good keeping up with [Benet] because from what I know they’ve had a lot more games than us,” York senior midfielder Emily Whitcomb said. “Last year we [lost] by one, so I think it was really good for us that we were able to keep up with them.” The Belmont-bound Whitcomb tallied her second goal and gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead when
she scored off a corner kick from senior Alyssa Kovatchis with 30:12 to go in the first half. It was the first time the Redwings (4-0-1) have trailed this year. Benet’s Rachel Bernicky tied it three minutes later off a scramble in front of the net, but that finished the scoring for the game. York junior goalie Ellen Foley made five saves, including a game-saving stop on a penalty kick by Benet’s sophomore sensation Kerry Abello in the second half. Abello, a Penn State commit, had scored nine

the season after tearing her ACL during basketball season. Senior forward Jessica Bianchi, who tied Alyssa Kovatchis for the team scoring lead last year with 14 goals, was injured in the win over Joliet West, and senior midfielder Carys Hund, a Wayne State recruit, also was out. “We were a little short on the bench today so it’s a good result,” York coach Don Vana said. “We have some things to work out and [Benet] is a little more seasoned right now, so I’m not discouraged.”

Only Brian Herrera and Steve Stam return any notable innings for the Knights on the mound, but senior transfer Connor Youngman is expected to jump into the rotation. Offensively, sophomore catcher Austin Reed is the team’s top returning hitter. Senior Stone Brinkman is another regular in the lineup who is back.

Silver winning team, but the Dukes are young on the pitching staff. Senior all-conference returners Nolan Spencer and Kyle Coughlin man the middle-infield positions and the top two spots in the lineup. Fellow seniors
Nick Potaczek, Mike Homan and Sam Craggs also picked up varsity at-bats last season. The hitting side is more of a known entity, but York’s pitching likely will decide how successful the team is this spring. Senior Matt Sabatini is the only returning pitcher who logged notable innings on varsity last year. “This is the first time I’ve really not had a definitive one, two and three guy,” coach Dave Kalal said of the pitching staff. “I said to the guys it’s up for grabs. Whoever wants to step up and show us they can pitch and pitch at a high level, then we’ll go from there. Until then we have to see what we got.” Junior Cole Miller transferred in from Timothy Christian, where he spent the past two seasons on the Trojans’ varsity team. He gave up just an unearned run in four innings in his York debut against Batavia on Monday. Coughlin also will pitch this season. Juniors Matt Riecker, Cam Fowler and Joe Polowsky also have logged innings so far. “We’re young, we got a lot to learn,” Kalal said. “We’re young on the mound. We’ve got a big learning curve.”

Outlook: The Blazers bring back a number of hitters, but the pitching staff has some younger pieces looking to step up. Senior Christian Grabowski was the Blazers’ top pitcher in the summer but tore his ACL prepping for football season in the fall. He’s healthy now and also will play first base. Also on the return from injury is senior outfielder Mike Rybarczyk, who suffered a broken ankle during football season. Jake Atiyeh is the team’s top returning hitter. Eric Gilliam, Jaime Valdez and Joe Conforti also saw playing time last year. Rybarczyk, Atiyeh and Gilliam were standouts on the football team while Valdez was a sectional-qualifying wrestler. “That’s what drives these guys, they had success in other sports,” coach Michael Kennedy said. “We’re trying to translate that over to baseball.” Sophomore lefty Nick Villasenor is slotted to be the No. 2 pitcher behind Grabowski while juniors Jacob Crandall, Matthew Robinson and Charles O’Connell are vying for the No. 3 spot. Nick Fugarino, Steven Mosny and Angelo Feola are juniors who will contribute right away.
