ELMHURST – In a unanimous decision, the Elmhurst City Council rejected two of the six bids for the Addison Avenue Parking Deck project Monday, after the bids surpassed the expected budget. Bloomington-based company T.A. Bowman Constructors was the single bidder for the glass, mesh and steel exterior work of the six-story, 65-foot structure. The construction company priced the glass and mesh work at about $1.07 million, which was far from the Public Works and Buildings Committee’s estimated budget set at $691,445. For the steel work, the bidder estimated the cost at $199,200, which was again more than the committee’s $102,300 budget. The bids that were approved in-
NEWS BRIEF ‘Chicago Fire’ airs episode filmed at Elmhurst Quarry ELMHURST – Elmhurst fans of NBC’s “Chicago Fire” who tuned in to Tuesday’s episode were greeted with some familiar surroundings, as the episode featured a scene filmed in April at the Elmhurst Quarry. For those who missed it, the episode is available at shawurl.com/1w09. Fans were not disappointed when the show stopped by the city for filming, as some scored photos with stars such as Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney. The announcement of the show’s presence in Elmhurst was met with an excited response from fans on social media. Some reported seeing other actors as well.

cluded $402,710 for paint; $83,675 for the exterior insulation finishing systems; $37,700 for carpentry and $38,493 for roofing. Each approved bid was the only bid the city received for the associated work. The City Council vote mirrored the recommendations of the Public Works and Buildings Committee. During the meeting’s public comment segment, Elmhurst resident Tamara Brenner questioned why the committee continued to receive only one qualified bidder to address the work needed to build the parking deck. Committee member Michael Bram said the committee made every attempt to make sure bidders had the opportunity to respond and participate in the parking deck’s construction. Bram added he, along with Com-
mittee Chairman Jim Kennedy and Vice Chairman Chris Healy, put out a notice for the project twice and only garnered a small amount of interest from potential industrial companies. In the case where there is only one bidder, the committee does take the time to decide whether to approve or reject the propositions, Kennedy said after the meeting. He added if the one bidder offers a fair price and meets their expectations, then the committee would take the next step and approve the bid. Construction of the Addison Avenue Parking Deck, which includes 16,000 square feet of retail space and a 690-space public parking facility, is ongoing. “At this point, we’re right on track, and we have no issues going forward,” Kennedy said.
Elmhurst Fire Department and Metro Paramedics receive award SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Fire Department and Metro Paramedics received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Award. The award recognizes Emergency Medical Systems agencies’ commitment to providing proper education and training to treat patients who have suffered from a heart attack, according to a city of Elmhurst news release. “We’re proud to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in emergency medical care for STEMI patients,” Fire Chief Jeff Bacidore said in the release. Elmhurst Historical Museum on Thursday from Hawthorne Elementary School’s firstgrade class. Teacher Sue Lindstrom said this field trip was a special way for her students to spend time with their mothers and grandmothers in celebration of Mother’s Day. Lindstrom, who brought her own mother, Evelyn Freitag, along for the trip, said she instructed her students’ mothers to bring at least one keepsake. For Lindstrom and her mother, the two decided to bring a miniature-sized milk container. Lindstrom recalled when she was a little girl, she and her mother would visit her aunt and uncle’s farm on Grand Avenue, a stretch of land now occupied by car dealerships. “Everyone has a wealth of memories,” said Christena Gunther, the museum’s community programs coordinator. Elmhurst Historical Museum Marketing Director Patrice Roche said the decision to host the Memory Jar Project in May was to pair it
with Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and graduation, and the mason jars are merely a tangible item that represents a story shared and weaved through generations. Roche explained the idea came from the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History in California, where the museum’s executive director Nina Simon wrote on the museum’s blog that the project is simple – it asks participants to think, to remember and to share a part of their life that made an impact on them. The purpose of the monthlong project is to engage the community and have visitors become a part of the museum, Roche said. Gunther and Roche said while they encourage participants to add their own personal items, they do provide some craft and art supplies like rocks, seashells and flowers to help jog their memories and to contribute to the mason jars’ design. The Elmhurst Memory Jar Project is scheduled to run through May 31. Projects may be completed during the museum’s regular hours, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Those who wish to keep their memory jars after the May Olivia Belletire, 6, of Elmhurst picks out pieces that remind her of goexhibition may collect them ing to a Blackhawks game with her family as she makes a memory jar June 2 and 3. ELMHURST – Several small mason jars are lined up along the wooden shelves of the recently renovated gallery space on the first floor of the Elmhurst Historical Museum. Each jar contains small trinkets and personal items that hold a special memory to the person who sealed it. A small tag hangs from the neck of the mason jars with a sentence that starts with “I remember…” For Margaret Moser and her 7-year-old son Sam, the two finished the sentence with the way they say good night to each other: “I love you as deep as the ocean and as high as the sky.” The two filled the mason jar with small seashells and images of their favorite books to represent their sweet sentiment. Patti Whitney and her granddaughter Nolee, 7, filled their jar to the top with flowers and white lace. Both carefully placed two photos that featured Whitney and Nolee together. Nolee wrote on the tag how her grandma taught her how to blow out a candle on her first birthday and make a wish. Nolee and Sam are just two of 19 students who came to the

programs also help first-time players know how to be a part of a team and build their self-esteem. Children are exposed to different types of sports, which helps them learn which sports they like and don’t like to play. For Gretchen Haynes, that was what attracted her to the program and motivated her to enroll Linnea, 5, and Nicholas, 6, in the multisport class, a popular 45-minute course that introduces students to sports such as baseball, basketball and golf. Another aspect of the course Haynes likes is it is only once a week. “I’m not a mom who wants her kids to be overscheduled,” she said. McDaniel said N Zone Sports does provide professional training through private classes for children who do want to excel athletically. He added N Zone Sports is trying to provide other services to families like hosting birthday parties and events like Parents’ Night Out, where parents can drop off their kids and enjoy a couple hours of their own “free time.” McDaniel, who also coaches the kids, said the best part of his job is easy to admit: “I get to be five years old again and be goofy.”

New physical therapy clinic to build a community for women By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – In an effort to create a safe space for women to learn about their health and their bodies, physical therapists Jennifer Hungate and Amy Pawlik formed a clinic on the second floor of a two-story building near the intersection of York Street and North Avenue. From a distance, the Vitality Women’s Physical Therapy and Wellness Clinic looks like a long hallway, each door leading to a new transition, attentive to the needs of their clients. The clinic is divided into four crucial spaces: two private rooms for one-onone checkups and two fitness studios, one used for physical therapy sessions and the other for small group exercise classes. Overall, the coffee-colored wooden flooring and lavender walls offer a warm embrace for anyone who enters and decides to stay. “We wanted to get away from that institutional feeling,” Hungate said. If you felt, though, the winners from the April 7 election should allow the outgoing board members to recede into obscurity with at least a little bit of dignity, well, that didn’t happen. Some strife is inevitable. The three holdovers from the previous board lineup who represent the former majority aren’t likely to support the four members, led by new Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, in many of their efforts to roll back all of those bad decisions. There are going to be a lot of 4-3 votes, as there were April 30. Putting its stamp on President Robert Breuder’s medical leave by voting to put him on administrative leave – good. Now he can’t declare his medical leave ended and go back to work at any time he pleases. Moving forward with a state-run audit of the college’s finances – also good. We need clarity on whether the college has been a good steward of tax dollars and students’ tuition. Hiring temporary legal counsel for the board that had previously represented Hamilton – an eyebrow raiser for sure. What was decidedly not good was the political theater around the awarding of “certificates of appreciation” for outgoing board members Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda. New Vice Chairwoman Deanne Marie

Mazzochi, part of the “Clean Slate” of candidates that bested Savage and Svoboda at the polls, questioned whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding and could have an impact on ongoing investigations of the school. To an observer, this line of questioning seems like a mean-spirited dig rather than a sincere concern. Apparently it wasn’t sufficient to have defeated Savage and Svoboda at the polls, to have been given a mandate from voters that sweeping change was needed on the board. Instead of being a gracious victor and moving on to clean up the mess made by previous leaders, we have an overt attempt to humiliate those who were defeated. It’s no surprise that Savage and Svoboda chose to leave before the official vote on the certificates. Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda took part in votes that were openly derided on this very opinion page, and were part of a former board that generally left the entire Chicago region scratching its collective heads trying to understand what was going on in Glen Ellyn. But surely there’s no harm in taking a moment to recognize their service, letting them have a moment of acknowledgment as their time as public servants came to a close. If the ongoing investigations point fingers in their direction, so be it. That’s another matter for another day. Being right on many, or even most, of the issues doesn’t give the new board majority carte blanche to treat the new minority, or anyone else, in a disrespectful fashion. There’s a lot to fix, but showing some decorum in the process would go a long way toward healing the wounds on campus, too.

I would like to acknowledge the fine attention to costs and decisions by past [Elmhurst] aldermen of George Szczepaniak, Paula Pezza and Diane Gutenkauf. They always asked the tough questions and, in many situations, were by themselves and opposed from the majority of the council. Michael Bram also joined them, and now he is all alone. One realizes that decisions by the aldermen are not easy, nor always popular. Keep asking the tough questions, Michael! You are appreciated by many of us. I’m calling regarding neighbors and people that do garage sales. It is summertime, so we will be seeing more of these. I am, too, one of them that also has a garage sale, but I do not leave my signs up days afterward everywhere where they’re blown around or on other people’s property or the city property. You just must be courteous to pick up the signs when you’re done. And as a footnote, Elmhurst police can even ticket people because they have their addresses on them.

How does looting help issues surrounding police and crime? It seems like every time they have some officer shooting somebody, there’s always a riot. ... I can understand them taking out their anger on the police because they see them as the people who perpetrated the crime against their victim. But with this looting and everything, I just don’t understand how that plays into it. That’s why a lot of people don’t have sympathy for these people when something like this happens. They see all the looting that has absolutely nothing to do with the crime that was committed or the police who committed the crime. It’s just ridiculous.

I believe that if Elmhurst could limit their downtown rents and choose to rent to more interesting shops, there would be an increase in foot traffic. Bringing in more condos will not provide more foot traffic to the area. ... It seems like all we bring in is more chains, banks, Realtors and the like. Elmhurst does not need more of those. Women do most of the shopping, so why don’t we bring in more shops that appeal to women? We need the cute, little shops that draw us women into wanting to walk and browse in and out of stores.

Hungate and Pawlik said most of the women who have come through their clinic are new mothers who have experienced different types of pain before or during their pregnancies and post deliveries, and the purpose of their clinic extends beyond working through and treating their physical ailments. “The idea of our clinic is to offer prevention and maintenance, not just rehabilitation,” Hungate said. While Hungate primarily deals with mothers-to-be or new mothers who have bladder and bowel dysfunction, Pawlik handles older women that look to enhance their strength through fitness training and exercise. Hungate and Pawlik designed a curriculum to celebrate National Women’s Health Week, which kicks off May 10. The wellness workshops are a mix of hourlong lectures on assorted topics that teach women the importance of taking care of their bodies as they transition into different stages of their lives. Pawlik said while she and Hungate will spearhead a couple of the workshops, they have invited doulas, mental

DERMATOLOGY UPDATE Presented by
Todd T. Davis, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist
SKIN ISSUES RELATED TO RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS While most people normally associate rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with joint inflammation and pain, this chronic inflammatory disorder may also lead to issues that involve the skin. For instance, about half of RA sufferers develop rheumatoid nodules, which are lumps that develop over the skin and under bony areas (i.e., fingers and elbows). While these nodules sometimes disappear without treatment, a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) used to treat RA can help eliminate them as well. In addition, RA may also cause a condition called “vasculitis”, which is inflammation of the blood vessels that feed the skin. Vasculitis can produce red spots and, in extreme cases, ulcers in the legs and under the fingernails, requiring

Author teaches readers to bite the bullet By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – On YouTube, Kat Hibbard is dressed in a tight orange jumpsuit that covers every inch of her body. She is featured wearing an oversized pair of purple goggles, and she has the phrase “Chubby Chasers” strategically placed across her chest. Her backdrop appears to be just a small part of Kat Hibbard her room. The sunlight, blocked by her window shades, tries to enter her room, leaving the viewer to see little more than a silhouette of the orange figure. With a calm, crisp and clear tone in her voice, Hibbard greets her viewers and begins to lure them into her world. She reads sections of “Chubby Chasers,” the first book of her three-part series, which tells the story of a plus-sized woman named Carolyyn Davidson who feels trapped by the confines of her strict daily work routine until she discovers an online dating service that opens the door to an unchartered path of confidence, beauty and self-empowerment. “There’s a little bit of Carolyyn in
Know more To learn more about local author Kat Hibbard, visit kathibbard.com. all of us,” Hibbard said, adding the connection between the suit and the story may seem a little strange at first. The Elmhurst author explained Carolyyn’s story starts off by clueing the reader in on her lifestyle and her job as a successful event planner working on a campaign boldly titled “The Fastest Trim Down.” “She wears six outfits, you know. She packs her lunch in organized containers,” Hibbard said, adding Carolyyn is self-conscious about her size, and her work routine has led her to feel stagnant, emotionless. Hibbard said at its core, the story is a visual, artistic and honest representation “of all us” who may feel imprisoned through relationships or lack of relationships that bring us to that place of vulnerability and loneliness – a feeling she is all too familiar with. The 50-year-old recalled a painful time in her life that inspired her to write her first book in 2006, a memoir

titled “Bullets.” In 19 short essays, Hibbard, 42 at the time, chronicled pieces of her childhood, where she and her two sisters were exposed to domestic violence, abuse, drugs and alcoholism by their parents. “We saw things as kids that kids shouldn’t see,” Hibbard said, noting the book’s title was not only a metaphor of how her childhood felt – fast, violent and fatal – but also represented how her father’s interest in guns left actual bullet holes in the walls of their home. Hibbard, who works as an educator, said she has read parts of her book aloud to students during speaking engagements. She added many of her readers have asked her if writing the book was a way for her to cope with her past. “You don’t write a tell-all book if you’re not healed,” Hibbard said, adding her overall mission as a writer is to help encourage kids to talk and tell their stories, especially when no one is listening. Hibbard recalled a particular chapter in the book where she discussed dropping out of high school at 15 years old after skipping school for a month. “My parents didn’t know. The school didn’t call. No one knew,” she said, adding she lied about her age to get a full-time job.
Both of her books may be different, Hibbard said, but there is a thread that keeps them together: her children, Bailey, 23, and Logan, 19. “This is what they call ‘breaking the cycle,’” Hibbard said. She explained her parents left her to figure things out for herself during her formative years, but when she decided to have her own children, she committed to being a loving, supportive mother. Hibbard said a part of the reason why she wrote “Chubby Chasers” is to raise money for her children’s college tuition. Like Carolyyn’s decision to click on the dating site, Hibbard is once again taking a chance on her writing to share a story that walks readers through the transition of becoming a fulfilled self. Bailey and Logan said they have seen their mother bring art to life by pursuing her own dreams with a purpose, which has inspired them to follow their own ambitions of music and performance, along with receiving a higher education. “You can come out of any situation and be a success,” Bailey said, noting that’s the lesson she learned from her mother – a lesson Hibbard, too, hopes her readers can come to see within the pages of her books.

the first period, this time courtesy of Chalupny, who flew down the left and saw her low firsttime cross rifled just wide by Press. After an uneventful finish to the opening period, Chicago came out of the break with renewed urgency, and the persistence finally paid off in the 54th minute. Having hit teammate Julie Johnston in the face on her initial blast from just inside the box, Colaprico did everything right on the rebound, smashing a left-footed rocket past the outstretched arms of Cameron to make it 1-0. The crowd at Benedictine University subsequently had to wait until 15 minutes from full time for another quality opportunity, Chicago’s Chalupny exploding into the box on the left and rifling a laser beam on target that was guided over the bar by the fingertips of Cameron. Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made her best stop of the match in the 86th minute, leaving her feet and diving to her right to deny Hayley Haagsma’s dangerous header off an in-swinging free-kick from the wing. Cara Walls nearly sealed the deal for the hosts in stoppage time, as she found herself one-on-one with netminder Cameron, who pounced on a lapse in concentration to defuse the threat. It would be the day’s final close look, as the home side earned its second win of 2015. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn three more points when they take on Boston Breakers this coming Saturday in a doubleheader with MLS outfit Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. Chicago, Illinois – – The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Chicago Red Stars dominated and stayed unbeaten in their third match of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, defeating Sky Blue FC 1-0 behind rookie midfielder Danielle Colaprico’s first tally of her professional career. While the visitors from New Jersey were without all of their World-Cupbound players, the home match served as the Send-Off event for five of the eight Chicago stars who will be competing in this summer’s tournament in Canada. The Red Stars put pressure on their opponents early and created the first close look in the 5th minute, as defender Taryn Hemmings sprinted up the right wing and sent a dangerous ball to the far post. Teammate Vanessa DiBernardo was unfortunate to see her header from a tight angle sail just over the frame. A mere four minutes later, the hosts’ aggressive approach nearly paid off, DiBernardo coming close to stripping goalkeeper Brittany Cameron of the ball for what would have been a certain tally. Chicago had its next quality chance moments later. Former Virginia standout Colaprico sent Lori Chalupny down the left and the 31-year-old’s centering pass seemed destined to be tapped home at the doorstep. Instead, it evaded both defenders and attackers, trickling just wide of the far post. Red Stars striker Christen Press, who came into the game as the newly crowned NWSL Player of the Month for April, had two opportunities to open the scoring in the 18th minute. After her left-footed attempt from 20 yards out forced a diving save, Press got back on the ball and fired just high from inside the penalty area. She caused havoc once again halfway through

• COD Continued from page 16 With the majority of the seven-member board on lock, the four pushed through an aggressive special meeting agenda the three remaining trustees consistently voted against, citing a lack of transparency and inclusion in its drafting.
Breuder out Early in the meeting, the board addressed one of the biggest elephants in the room: President Robert Breuder. The controversial leader has been in the limelight for months, first for a leaked email in July 2014 that advised trustees to find “politically attractive” ways to spend $20 million in state funding promised to the school. His tenure was later punctuated by
the board’s approval of a nearly $763,000 buyout for his early retirement in March 2016 and several Du-Page County and federal subpoenas looking into his on-campus spending and that of trustees and administrators under his watch. Breuder beat the board to his proposed ouster, announcing April 28 he would be taking medical leave, but trustees still put him on administrative leave with pay during the meeting. New college attorney Tim Elliott, who also serves as a Glen Ellyn village trustee and has been involved in cases against the college twice in the past year, said the move gave the board control over the timing of Breuder’s return. The passage of the vote, which included installing Executive Vice President Joseph Collins as acting interim president, was met with applause
from the public.
Audits and legal action The board also moved on several looming issues regarding legislation and legal action against the school April 30. After months of foot-dragging, trustees authorized a staterun audit of the school’s finances from 2009 to 2014 by the Illinois Auditor General’s Office. Earlier this year, several members of the General Assembly asked for the audit, including state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton. Ives originally gave the college a March 12 deadline to accept terms for an audit dating to 2011 and agree to pay for the estimated $144,000 to $234,000 project. The board also authorized an internal investigation into the college’s accounts April 30, directed staff to provide the
board and college’s client files from several law firms, and formalized a litigation hold in light of the federal investigations against the school. Additionally, it hired new temporary legal counsel – Elliott’s Rathje & Woodward and Schuyler, Roche & Crisham – for the board. Both were retained to guide the board during the next four months, although the three old guard trustees questioned the latter’s hire, as one of its attorneys, Dan Kinsella, represented Hamilton after the board censured her last year.
Suspended accounts The board has previously received criticism about lavish spending accounts held by Breuder and trustees, including several thousand dollars spent at campus restaurant Waterleaf, but it moved April 30
to suspend all travel and entertainment reimbursements for trustees, as well as all “house” accounts on or off campus. When several trustees voiced concern, particularly student trustee Gloria Roark, Hamilton said the board would evaluate each case individually and that it represented a stop until the board looked over its policies. The board also hired a transition team led by Donald Haider, professor of strategy at the Kellogg School of Management. The team will guide new board members and possibly interim administrative leadership through the legal action against the college and recommend ways to improve operations and governance. Hamilton said she was already looking at filling it with volunteer local stakeholders from across the district.

Rachel Krusenoski Scholarship recipient
“Events like this bring our community together. We are able to recognize the good and share that with the community,” Buchanan said. “Basically it’s kind of pay it forward.” The selection process for the awards started in September and continued through March. Suburban Life newspapers routinely published profiles of five to eight students nominated by teachers, counselors and other leaders. A selection committee including representatives from Suburban Life Media and DuPage Credit Union then graded each student based on academic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular participation to determine who would win the coveted scholarships. The two winners, both nominated by their counselors, were shocked af-
ter seeing the amount of qualified nominees. Krusenoski, who has a 4.5 GPA and is involved in the school newspaper as well as varsity cross country and track, believes it was her ability to focus only on activities she could put her heart into that helped elevate her to attain the scholarship. “Everything I try to pursue in these last four years is something I pursued with passion,” Krusenoski said. “In doing so, I was able to put in a lot of effort and a lot of heart into what I was doing.” Matysik, who has an ACT score of 35, is on the baseball team and is involved with Peer Leaders and National Honor Society, was initially unsure what made him stand out, but attributes his success to participating in a

wide variety of activities. “I don’t really know,” he said. “I mean I try to focus on being well-rounded, whether it be school athletics, academics, like different clubs and stuff, community service.” Krusenoski plans to major in journalism at the University of Southern California and Matysik will study biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said she looks forward to continuing to honor young achievers through Suburban Life Scholars. Burke said in the future she would like to see a keynote speaker at the reception. “We want this to grow,” she said.

The western suburbs’ best and brightest were recognized recently by Suburban Life Media. Two area high school students received merit-based college scholarships at an awards reception April 30 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. Suburban Life partnered with DuPage Credit Union to award $2,000 scholarships to Downers Grove North High School senior Rachel Krusenoski and Downers Grove South High School senior Thomas Matysik. The winners were chosen based on academic performance, character and commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities and beat out 48 other students who were given certificates of recognition as Suburban Life Scholars. Other Suburban Life Scholars included Margarita (Maggie) Sumbulla, Jennyfer Puebla, Franc De Guzman and Eric Gilliam of Addison Trail High School. Event organizer Kelly Buchanan saw the reception as an opportunity to celebrate the community.

Real Estate News Homeowners Voice a Shifting Sense of Home Value in New Study
Respondents in Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ Inaugural Homeowner Survey finds that home value goes beyond price, location in new age of real estate CHICAGO, IL – May 1, 2015 – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group today released results of its first quarterly Homeowner Sentiment Survey showing that people’s perception of home value runs much deeper than standard measures of price and location. Today’s property owners and prospective homebuyers define value in broader terms of personal confidence in their housing investment and how a property will meet their needs now and in the future. Owners place value in a home’s intrinsic qualities of wealth building, safety and satisfaction. “People want homes for all the right reasons, starting with a place to make memories, build
strong futures and make their dreams a reality,” said Nancy Nagy, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group. Michael Pierson, president of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group, added, “The facts that come to light from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices conducting forward-thinking research studies like this one help our agents better understand their clients. That understanding is an integral part of providing exceptional service.” As housing markets across America continue their steady recovery and with home equity rising for many, homeowners have increasing options. Television makeover a hit at Zest Bistro LEFT: Zest Bistro recently underwent an eye-catching makeover on television’s “Restaurant Impossible,” which redesigned the eatery inside Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove. vinaigrette. Grilled asparagus and pearl couscous were perfect complements. I am not normally a fan of fish (or asparagus, for that matter), but even I was impressed with the dish and the way it was presented. I set aside my desire for the bacon-and-blue-cheese-infused hamburger with truffled mayo and sampled the Cuban sandwich. The fresh ground mustard worked well with sweet pickles and the smokiness of the pork, all encased in a perfectly toasted Cuban roll, akin to French bread. For dessert, we tried the salted caramel cheesecake. It looked so much like ice cream we thought it would be cold, but it was light, fluffy and sweet with the right amount of salted caramel flavor on top of a toasty graham cracker crust. As chef Irvine noted on “Restaurant Impossible,” the food at Zest has always been

DOWNERS GROVE – A star turn on the Food Network show “Restaurant Impossible” spotlighted Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and the Zest Bistro located within, where the food has always been center stage. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the television program, said it was one of just a few times in years of filming the show that he actually enjoyed the food served at the outset. That’s high praise from a well-regarded chef who never hesitates to call it like he sees it. That there was nothing wrong with the menu in the first place was confirmed when my date and I recently paid a visit to Zest. Though we were both hungry, we asked our waiter to give us more time to peruse the choices, because every item sounded delectable. Before picking entrees, we decided to appease our appetites by ordering the short rib nachos appetizer. Thick and crunchy tortilla chips were the foundation for a great blend of flavors that ranged from the sweetness of the beef to the tang of Cotija cheese sauce and lime horseradish crema, with a hint of spiciness from fresh green chilies. We paired our appetizer with beverages. My date picked a beer from an impressive list of offerings by independent breweries, while I chose the Dark and Stormy Mule served in a copper mug. The rum-based drink did a dance on my taste buds with simple syrup and ginger beer leading the tango. Irvine’s signature pot roast, introduced to the menu after his recent visit to Downers Grove, must be a fan favorite, as Zest had just served the last of a roast made a bit earlier in the day and was in the process of cooking a second. My companion was slightly disappointed not to be able to try the dish, but that changed when her salmon entree arrived. The perfectly cooked fillet was coated in a honey mustard glaze and served with a sweet and savory orange mustard

plete game in the first game of the series. “Everyone got to hit,” Peterson said. “Guys that don’t always get to play and hit contributed to the game. “We’re starting to mesh well now as a unit. We’re starting to figure ourselves out and now we got the field figured out. We have talent. We always did. We just had to make the easy plays and that’s what we struggled with at first. Basically, it’s cutting down on the errors and now the bats are coming around, too.” York takes on Proviso West, winless in the Silver, Saturday and Monday before closing its conference slate against Hinsdale Central May 15 to 18. The Dukes are hoping to maintain the sudden turnaround. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and that’s the key,” Kalal said. “Everybody is rooting for each other. I’ve said all along that the team chemistry has been very good and they root for one another and they help each other out. We just got to keep it rolling.”

GLEN ELLYN – It’s not rare for a coach to remain positive when things are down for his team, but York’s baseball team made coach Dave Kalal appear prophetic. On April 20, the Dukes beat Lyons Township to win their first West Suburban Silver series after entering the series with a 1-11 record. Kalal said things simply had to start turning the right way after the shocking start. Things have definitely turned around for York, which has won six of its last nine games since winning the rubber game against LT. The Dukes took two out of three from Glenbard West this past weekend to win a third straight WSS series victory.
“We just have been preaching all year that we got to be good when May comes around,” Kalal said. “March and April we were just trying to figure things out, who could be successful where and who could help us out where. We took that time to figure things out and we’re starting to figure it out.” York won the series opener against the Hilltoppers 6-3 on May 1 and followed up with an 18-4 thumping on Saturday in Glen Ellyn. The Hilltoppers salvaged a game in Elmhurst, winning the finale 8-2. In the opener, Sam Craggs had a bases-clearing triple in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. Craggs had three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored in Saturday’s blowout win. Brian Peterson added three hits and six RBIs in a huge offensive game for York. The epitome of the offensive showing on Saturday was Matt Sabatini hitting a pinchhit home run in the seventh inning. Sabatini is a full-time starting pitcher for York and earned the win with a com-

IC seniors eye state finals By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – After spending four years on varsity, IC Catholic softball seniors Jessica Conenna and Gabby Curran are hoping they can end their careers at state. The two have signed to extend their softball careers in college, but first they want to guide the Knights to the promised land. Conenna, a standout two-way pitcher who will pitch at Northern Illinois, and Curran, a shortstop committed to Dominican University, both believe the Knights have what it takes. “I just think overall we’re playing the best throughout my four years,” Conenna said. “We’re all around more versatile and all around closer together.” IC entered Thursday’s game against Fenton with a 19-3 record. ceived the top seed in a Class 2A regional, which they will host starting May 18. After making it to a sectional final last year, the Knights are hungry for more. “I really think we do have the talent to go downstate and I think that would be a great way to end senior year,” Curran said. “We’ve always had a lot of talent here, but for the past four years we’ve been struggling with it a little bit. We really put it together this year. It’s great to see all the rewards from all the hard work we put in.” Conenna has a 1.78 ERA with five shutouts and 130 strikeouts, including seven outings with 10 or more strikeouts, this season. She’s also hitting .419 with 24 RBIs in 20 games. “I just want to make this season count and make it memorable,” Conenna said. “I think I’m just more determined on the mound as a senior. I’m
more mature on the mound.” Meanwhile, Curran is earning her leadoff spot in the order with a .519 batting average, 21 stolen bases and 35 runs scored. “This year I’ve definitely taken more of a leadership role on the team,” Curran said. “I was voted captain so I definitely realized that I have certain expectations for myself and I expect that from the team. I’m really taking this team on as my own. I feel like this is my team. Same with Jess, being on varsity for four years. This is our year.” Lindsey Montoya, another four-year varsity player, and Jackie Pochop, a newcomer to the team, also are a part of the four-player senior class. The seniors are hoping their legacy is take IC softball to state for the first time. “When we’re right and we play well I think we can beat anybody in 2A,” coach Frank Reaber said.
