Elmhurst Travelers reunite By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Roman Strzala, 78, and Larry Schmidt, 79, took a good look at a couple of old black-and-white photographs of themselves. In them, Strzala and Schmidt are both in their 20s, have heads full of thick hair and show pride in their athletic build, wearing their football uniforms with a touch of toughness topped with a seemingly kind, boyish smile. Their photos were some of those pinned to a poster board that displayed 32 other members of the Elmhurst Travelers, a local semipro football team, during a reunion of the team July 25 at the Elmhurst Historical Museum. “I looked so healthy then,” said Schmidt, with an even larger smile. However, his smile slowly disappeared as he pointed out which of his former teammates have since passed away. Strzala and Schmidt’s close friends, family members and former teammates met at the educational center of the museum to spread the word about the team’s history and how important it is to find a home for their trophies, letterman jackets and photographs. The team’s keepsakes were placed on display as part of the museum’s ongoing exhibit “Pigskin Peanuts,” which showcases a football-themed comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. Having to shuffle those personal items in and out of a storage facility is tiring, and their legacy belongs in Elmhurst, Strzala said. The Elmhurst

The Elmhurst Historical Museum hosts a reunion for the Elmhurst Travelers semipro football team in the museum’s education center July 25. Travelers Alumni Association is on a mission to find a proper place to display their memorabilia in the city. Strzala and Schmidt said the story of the Elmhurst Travelers begins with their coach George Kulton. Shortly after graduating from York Community High School, Kulton gathered a cou-
ple of his close friends and recruited players to form the Elmhurst Travelers as part of a growing semipro football league in 1927. They faced several different teams from Chicago, Aurora, southern Wisconsin and Indiana. In 40 years, the Travelers played 38 seasons, compiling a record of 292 wins, 80 losses and 30 ties, and during those years Kulton built teams of players who were looking to just play football for the love of the game, Strzala said. Strzala and Schmidt recalled practicing at East End Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays and playing games at York Community High School’s football field. The two said on other days their team would pile into Kulton’s home in Elmhurst to watch films of their games, train and unwind. At the time, players on the semipro football team did not receive a salary or any monetary compensation to play, and their only drive to win relied heavily on their passion, Strzala said. “I really miss that today. It was a really good time in my life,” he said, noting he was a part of championship teams in 1959, 1962 and 1963. Aside from football, Strzala and Schmidt said the Elmhurst Travelers gave them the opportunity to have long-lasting friendships. Strzala is the president of the Elmhurst Travelers Alumni Association, and Schmidt is the secretary. Each month, their group of 34 members meet and mostly reminisce about the good old days. “My wife says I’m living in the past, and I guess so,” Strzala said.

that include hourlong lessons in math, computer science, psychology, chemistry and biology. Studies aside, Afenya also has crafted a program that brings in guest speakers to address other issues teens encounter such as bullying, building relationships with friends and family, choosing the right college, knowing about financial aid, and chasing that dream job in science, technology, engineering or math. Of course, there is time in what sounds like a rigorous schedule for stu-
seize” in math and science. Afenya said this year 25 junior and senior high school students were selected from 15 schools, including Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park, DePaul College Prep in Chicago, Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, York Community High School in Elmhurst and Waukegan High School. Computer science professor Linda Krause reflected on teaching students basic coding skills to build a web page. At face value, everyone uses the Internet on a daily basis, but to learn the language of coding to create and design that website is a whole other story, Krause said. Lopez said with just that introduction he already is hooked and hopes to take a class or two during the school year. Taking a look back on the past two decades of the program, Afenya said the purpose of the summer academy is to ultimately provide students with the “right attitude” to “control the beasts” hidden within math and science. Ultimately, if students do choose another path, they hope to have given them the curiosity to wonder and wander, Krause said.

ELMHURST – Local high school students Hansel Lopez, 18, and Rachael Harrison, 17, have attended Elmhurst College’s Summer Academy in Math and Science for the past two years. When asked why they have decided to keep coming back to the weeklong program dedicated to exploring and encouraging STEM-related careers, they both answered they just liked to learn. For Lopez, he said he sees the program’s benefit when he heads back to school. The program serves as a review of key math and science concepts and formulas that are easily forgotten over the summer, he said. Harrison, on the other hand, enjoys meeting and connecting with other students from different area high schools who are interested in those particular subjects. Getting to know other girls in the program has helped boost her confidence in pursuing her passion for science, which is “stereotypically” categorized as a boys’ field, Harrison said. Those are just a couple of examples Evans Afenya, the program’s director, hopes students take away from their experience. In the past 20 years, Afenya, who is a math professor at Elmhurst College, has enlisted the help of close colleagues to build the curriculum for the academy with one goal in mind: How do we keep kids excited about math and science? Afenya structured the curriculum to split into different daily workshops

Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry construction to begin ELMHURST – With the unanimous approval of the Elmhurst City Council, construction for a new and improved Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry is underway. An official groundbreaking ceremony is set to take place Aug. 11 at the proposed site, the northeast corner of York Presbyterian Church’s parking lot. Construction is expected to be completed by early December, said Jackie Lawrence, food pantry director. Members of the food pantry hoped to have construction completed by Thanksgiving, but a slight delay because of permit approvals by the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee pushed it back, said Lawrence and Rev. Matt Parker Wrzeszcz, associate pastor of the church. Another factor that contributed to the delay was raising enough money to fund the entire project, Lawrence said. She said since the food pantry is going to be built on a church-owned parking lot, members of the church required the food pantry to have the money ready, so that the process of

construction would be continuous until completion. Lawrence added the estimated cost for the new pantry is between $700,000 to $750,000, and in the last few months she looked to Lea Ann Skogsberg, a capital campaign counselor, to help the pantry cover the cost of the 2,500-square-foot facility. Together, Lawrence and Skogsberg found community organizations and individual donors to commit to the project. Skogsberg said so far the pantry has received a total of $750,000 in donations and “gifts in kind,” such as doors and windows, from community members. Lawrence said architect Jim Ruprecht of Daedulus Development, a local firm, has led the design effort to construct the facility as pro bono work. The two said they plan to continue to find more funding to meet the capi-
tal campaign’s goal of $875,000. While most of the money will be allocated toward construction, some of it will serve as a safety net for any situations they may encounter during construction, food pantry treasurer Nancy Peterson said. She added a part of the money also will be put toward anticipated utility costs and the immediate need for supplies for their growing client base. Since 1983, the food pantry has grown to serve 400 clients every month and expanded to help communities outside of Elmhurst, including Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Hillside, Lombard, Oak Brook and Villa Park. The new pantry will include a larger storage area for food, a bay area for receiving donations and deliveries from community members and supporting groups, and ADA-accessible features for clients and volunteers. In addition, the pantry will provide an indoor waiting room to protect clients’ privacy. Wrzeszcz said he and members of the church and food pantry are most excited about having a facility that finally meets the needs of their clients and volunteers.

Agreements close on stormwater projects By F. AMANDA TUGADE
News to your phone
atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Elmhurst city and park leaders met July 23 to discuss the next phase of the agreement to use five park lots for proposed city stormwater projects. The Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners and Elmhurst City Council plan to finalize the agreement with their attorneys and continue to discuss the park project designs, which include building large stormwater detention basins for residents living near York Commons Park, Golden Meadows Park, East End Park, Crestview Park and Pioneer Park. Plans for East End Park, Crestview Park and Pioneer Park have yet to be finalized, but they likely will follow suit with the previously discussed projects proposed for York Commons Park and Golden Meadows Park, Alderman Mike Honquest previously told Suburban Life. As part of the agreement, the city planned to build a basketball court and two sand volleyball courts at York

Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers said the push to add new amenities to the parks in exchange for using land for stormwater storage is the least of the park board’s concerns. However, throughout discussions with residents and the park board, many expressed concerns about the city “taking” park land to construct nonpark-related features, and the intent of the offer was to make the parks better for the community on the city’s dollar, Mayor Steve Morley said. The park board first wants to see how the detention areas will function during heavy rainfall before making alterations to any of the parks, Rogers said.
In addition, the Park District will not require the city to construct any features in exchange for using park land for stormwater detention, he said. “The biggest thing here is we want to get (the projects) started so that we can help those residents,” said Kevin Graf, park board commissioner. “There’s other people, other priorities that the city needs to do in that southwest area, specifically infrastructure changes that are necessary and going to take additional time.” Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board of Education member John McDonough shared the Park District’s urgency to finalize the school district’s agreement with the city and move forward with flooding projects at Bryan Middle School and Madison Early Childhood Center. So far, board members have met with the city’s engineers to walk through the performance and maintenance standards of the proposed basins, as well as the design concepts on the school lots, McDonough said. He added the district and the city’s attorneys have met to revise certain

aspects of the agreement, but both entities still need some time to review and discuss those changes. One issue highlighted is whether the city should be held accountable through monetary compensation for any structural defects that may occur on the schools’ fields because of the basins. McDonough maintained the district would need to assess the basins’ performance standards to see if holding the city responsible would be a necessary part of the contract between the two entities. The two entities did agree the city would immediately fix any problems that may occur on the schools’ fields to assure the safety of staff, students and their families. McDonough added the district is “ready to sign” an agreement with the city. “We just need the document to reflect what we believe the understandings are,” he said. The three entities now will consult with their respective members before reconvening Aug. 13 to discuss the progress of the agreements.

ELMHURST – At the July 27 Development, Planning and Zoning Committee meeting, Chairman Scott M. Levin and member Mark Mulliner took a closer look at a list of residential sign ordinance changes recently recommended by city staff and the city’s Zoning and Planning Commission. With committee member Mike Honquest absent, the two discussed revisions made to a few regulations on the list with the intention of reviewing them at the next committee meeting before finalizing their recommendations to the City Council for approval. Levin and Mulliner agreed messages on institutional message board signs should change every 30 seconds, as opposed to every hour, which was the commission’s recommendation. “Thirty seconds is a really long time to stay stationed,” Mulliner said. The two also recognized electronic signs come in various colors against a black backdrop and are no longer limited to an amber or red color. They decided not to place any restriction on the signs’ colors. The commission had recommended that signs display amber text changes against a black backdrop. Levin and Mulliner kept the commission’s suggestion to have signs displayed between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. The committee and commission still have to decide how to regulate and measure the signs’ brightness, especially since that factor can be adjusted as the day progresses into night, Levin said.
Another topic of discussion is where institutional signs can be placed in residential areas. Levin said these signs typically are displayed within neighborhoods by the community’s fire department, churches, schools and park district. The two determined that signs will be allowed on streets known as “principal arterial streets,” which include North Avenue, Lake Street and Grand Avenue. Signs may not be allowed on streets classified as “minor arterial streets,” including St. Charles Road from Poplar Avenue to Spring Road and York Street from Church Street to Seminole Avenue. Levin said limiting signs in these particular areas will help maintain neighborhoods’ character. The committee decided bulletin board signs, which are mostly used by churches, must be front- or back-lit. Temporary signs, such as banners, that are hung for special occasions must be at least 16 square feet in size and no more than 5 feet tall. Levin and Mulliner agreed temporary signs can be displayed for 30 days up to three times in a calendar year for different events. The commission had recommended a total of 30 days during the calendar year, as opposed to 90. As for commercial signage rules, the committee is engaged in an ongoing discussion with city staff and Elmhurst City Centre board members, Levin said. He added they have yet to reach any conclusions to produce a referral for the Zoning and Planning Commission to review.

COMMUNITY VOICE / KARA CAFORIO AND JOHN MORRISSEY
District 205 set to launch community engagement project In early September, Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 will launch Focus 205, a collaborative community engagement process between the school district and communities it serves. The initiative’s focus is to ensure the continuation of a highly successful educational experience for District 205 students and to help guide the direction of the district for the next several years. This project is so important that we have volunteered to co-chair the team, which will be working to plan and facilitate four community engagement sessions this fall. It is vitally important that members of our community be involved; therefore, we cordially invite you to participate in this conversation. Through a series of workshops, community members will begin to have a deeper understanding of various aspects of District 205, such as “future ready” educational programs and services, school finances and 21st-century facilities. More importantly, District 205 residents will have the opportunity to share ideas and discuss topics in small groups to provide feedback to the Board of Education. The first Community Engagement Session, or workshop, is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 2 at York Community High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst. The first session will serve as a starting point and help guide the direction of the following three workshops, which will be hosted Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 2. At the completion of the series, the information participants provide will be compiled and presented to the Elmhurst 205 Board of Education in early 2016. It will serve as the foundation for the development of a collaborative strategic plan. The success of Focus 205 relies on the participation of community members like you – the parents, grandparents, employees, business owners, senior citizens, alumni and other area residents – to be involved in the process. Your input and ideas are important in creating a clear path for Focus 205 and District 205. Spread the word to your friends and neighbors, and plan to join the Focus 205 conversation beginning September 2 when we will discuss “Where we are now, where are we going and how will we get there?” Also, come out and meet new District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer. Please visit the Focus 205 website at www.focus205.org for more information.
Kara Caforio and John Morrissey are the Focus 205 community co-chairs.

Mourners stand in line July 25 at Lisle’s DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church to get into the wake and funeral for Sandra Bland, who died in police custody in Texas earlier this month.
OUR VIEW
Bland family shouldn’t have to wait forever for the truth When a tragic death is compounded by a sense that it was a result of rank injustice, combined with a long history of similar injustices committed against the black community, the grieving that follows is understandably tinged with anger. And there’s no doubt that the family, friends and neighbors of Sandra Bland have every right to be angry. Even if it’s proved conclusively that the Naperville resident did commit suicide in a Texas jail cell, the video of her traffic stop and arrest show an interaction with a police officer going terribly wrong, and seemingly through no fault of her own. Remember, too, that this video is the last footage her family will ever see of her. In her last moments of freedom she was being intimidated, treated like a criminal – all, supposedly, over an improper signal for a lane change. But while everyone who knew and loved Sandra Bland is undoubtedly angry now, and will be for some time to come, the focus of her funeral services July 25 at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
was on who she was, and what a loss that is for that community. It would have been easy to play to the assembled cameras, to make inflammatory remarks, to make the gathering about the speakers instead of the departed and her loved ones. Any such urge was for the most part resisted, and that’s more than admirable. It’s astonishing. Sandra Bland’s family has shown remarkable patience, even as they’ve firmly demanded real answers from the Waller County, Texas, officials about what happened. Their respectful determination gives great weight to their point of view. We should not expect them to be patient or even respectful forever, however. The black community in this country is accustomed to dirty dealing and mistruths from officials, and they’ll be watching out for that, as well they should be. Hoping for justice is probably too much to expect in a case like this. It’s already an injustice, no matter what happens next. But we do hope that the full, complete and unaltered truth will come out of Waller County, whatever that truth may be.

employees. Let’s put a teacher’s average salary into perspective: The average teacher’s salary nationwide is $50,000. I would say that’s a super deal!
The producers vs. the parasites Current laws need to be enforced To the caller complaining about Gov. to stop shootings, not new ones Rauner’s so-called austerity. I’m sorry, Every time some nut case shoots people, whether for weird religious reasons or for other reasons, politicians scream for more gun control. When they do this, they are covering up the fact that federal laws are already in place to address such crimes. We have the laws we need; what we don’t seem to have is federal prosecutors to apply the laws and keep the monsters off the street. If those laws had been applied earlier, many of those people would not have been out of prison to murder people.
Teachers work more and harder than you think
Politicians are above the law
The feds ease off on the investigation into Hillary Clinton having kept classified emails on her personal server. She said there were no classified materials on her server – that should not have ended it. Ordinary people like us must follow federal law. Special people like politicians don’t need to. Case closed. So what else is new?
Trump and veterans
Donald Trump, you’re totally wrong on your thinking of what makes a hero. Every one of our men and women who serve in U.S. Armed Forces is a hero. Your classification of John McCain is totally wrong. Why don’t you get out of the United States of America?
Gov. Rauner doesn’t care about the working poor
I agree with whomever spoke up about Gov. Rauner. He’s not for the working poor, as we already are finding out. So we know it wasn’t us who voted for him. Probably all the wealthy people that are getting the tax breaks.

Teachers work far more hours than their contracted 180 days: Meetings before and after school, planning time, required professional development, grading, administrative paper work and before/ after school activities, which sometimes include tutoring. Yes, we do “technically” have about two months off during the summer. But are we really off? During the summer many teachers are seeking additional resources, working in their classrooms to prep for the upcoming school year, taking courses to further perfect their craft and enrich their students’ learning experience or working a summer job to supplement their teachers’ salary. Mind you, teachers are 10-month salary
but the producers owe the parasites nothing. The welfare state creates grateful recipients and resentful donors. It’s time to eliminate entitlements and subsidies and promote charity instead.

I think the teacher and biker conversation have had a good run. Time to get off those topics and get on to a new one that we all can agree on. New topic: The new parking structure in Elmhurst is ugly and an eyesore. Glad the tallest structure in Elmhurst has no architectural elements. My only hope is it will help bring in some anchor stores to fill in all the empty storefronts (also an eyesore) so maybe not all is lost.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Fire Department will receive $200,910 through the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program to replace 38 self-contained breathing apparatuses, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Illinois. The apparatuses are devices used by rescue workers that provide breathable air in emergency situations. The funding provided by the grant program “will help protect the lives and safety of all Elmhurst firefighters and the community they serve while enhancing regional re-
sponse capabilities,” Elmhurst Fire Chief Jeff Bacidore said in the release. The Elmhurst Fire Department did not meet the standards of the National Fire Protection Association, and their equipment malfunctions not only cost them money to fix, but they also could cost them their lives, according to Quigley’s letter in support for the grant. “Grants like the one awarded to the Elmhurst Fire Department directly support one of the core roles of government – protecting its citizens,” Quigley said in the release. “I’m proud to fight for increased funding for these grants and drive some of that back home to Elmhurst.”

CHICAGO RED STARS VS WASHINGTON SPIRIT SAT. JULY 25
RED STARS: 1 WASHINGTON SPIRIT: 1

Another Press Stunner Earns Chicago 1-1 Tie at Washington Germantown, Md. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars nearly handed third-place Washington Spirit its first home defeat of the season on Saturday night, with forward Christen Press giving Chicago the lead in the first half with a stunning long-range shot. League leading goal scorer Crystal Dunn tied the match in the final ten minutes of an entertaining game that saw Chicago deliver another strong showing to remain undefeated in four straight matches. The Red Stars, had the first promising look of the matchup in just the sixth minute of play: goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris did well to palm away a powerful shot from Canucks striker Adriana Leon. Washington created a chance of its own four minutes later, but Laura del Rio’s driven shot from inside the box was kept out by Canada international, Karina LeBlanc, who cleared the ball from her area. Press would give the Red Stars the lead in the 30th minute courtesy of her second goal in as many matches since winning the World Cup with the U.S. The 26-year-old found herself with time and space inside the Spirit’s half, she took a few touches from well outside the box before unleashing a rocket past an outstretched Harris and inside the left upright. Taryn Hemmings’ excellent work on the right could have given Press another goal in stoppage time of the first half, but the forward’s near post flick was deflected wide. Forward Jen Hoy had one last look for Chicago before the break: World Cup Golden Ball nominee Julie Johnston dribbled into the box on the right and delivered the ball to the former Princeton standout, whose attempt from close range was blocked by a Washington defender. In the second half, Red Stars center back Johnston had a pair of excellent clearances on both sides of a dangerous 56th-minute shot by the Spirit’s Dunn, who unleashed a left footed shot from just outside the area, only to see the ball whistle over

the frame. On the other end of the field Vanessa DiBernardo navigated around a defender on the right and picked out Hoy, whose close range attempt forced a point-black reflex save from Harris. Moments after Chicago defender Samantha Johnson’s 80th-minute challenge against Washington’s Dunn in the box was ruled to have been fair, the Spirit striker tied the match from the run of play, pouncing on the rebound from a blocked Christine Nairn effort. After controlling the ball, the 23-yearold Dunn drove a low, left-footed shot inside the left post that gave goalkeeper LeBlanc no chance to save it. Chicago immediately responded, but rookie sensation Sofia Huerta saw her right-footed curler from the left side of the box saved in spectacular fashion by Harris, who left her feet and tipped the ball out from behind her before it could find its way inside the far post. The Spirit subsequently created a pair of chances to win the game. First, substitute Hayley Raso released a cracker of shot that took a deflection and went wide of the left upright. Then, Ali Krieger found Dunn on the right, who then drove into the penalty area before firing toward the near post to force a diving save from LeBlanc. It took one last goal-line clearance from the Red Stars’ Johnston for the visitors to bag a valuable away point from the draw, which puts Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad two points ahead of second-place Seattle Reign FC in the standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to defend their top spot in the NWSL standings when they return home for an August 1 clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that is likely to feature several World Cup winners on both teams. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

HINSDALE – It didn’t take long for the newly opened Fuller House to distinguish itself from other restaurants in downtown Hinsdale. A large and lively outdoor patio set the scene before my date and I entered an equally vibrant pub atmosphere. Greeted just inside the front door by the hostess, we first noticed the expansive bar centered on the ground floor of the two-story establishment. With the restaurant just a stone’s throw from the train station, it simply screams to be a gathering spot for the after-work crowd. Fuller House offers a variety of specialty cocktails, plus a solid craft beer selection we enjoyed sampling. Hungrily taking up our menus, we scanned the wide array of salads, pizzas, burgers and other hand-held items, opting for an appetizer to start. We considered the woodfired pretzel sticks with honey mustard and pimento cheese sauces, as well as a cheese and charcuterie plate, before settling on Wisconsin cheese curds with a zesty Southwest ranch dipping sauce. Lightly breaded and fried to a perfect crispiness outside, the curds had a wonderful texture. Several main courses tickled our fancies. My date contemplated the fried buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese crumbles, along with several of the wood-fired pizzas prepared in the blazing oven in plain sight on the edge of the dining area. She ultimately decided on the 10inch arugula and prosciutto pizza with lemon, garlic and an olive oil drizzle. None of the flavors were hidden – the earthy taste of the arugula, the saltiness of the prosciutto and the creaminess of fresh mozzarella – all intertwined in a delightful combination. Nearly every entree sounded appetizing to me, including the fish and chips, brisket tacos and pulled pork sandwich, but the burgers were

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com It used to be that elite high school athletes had three jerseys in their closets – one for a fall sport, one for a winter sport, and one for a spring sport. Many high school athletes today still have three jerseys in the closet, though things are slightly different. Increasingly, those jerseys are home and away high school jerseys for one sport and a uniform for a club team in that same sport. More and more high school athletes are choosing to specialize in one sport with yearround competition aided by a plethora of AAU and club programs. The downside is fewer well-rounded athletes representing their high schools, but there are plenty of benefits for high school athletes willing to specialize in one sport by playing for clubs and on AAU teams in the offseason.
Options abound
Sports Performance is one of the elite volleyball clubs in the country. Its 18U red and 18U elite teams won AAU national titles in June. Allison Farrell, Meghan Wozniak and Samantha Silbernagel from Glenbard East all play at Sports Performance. AAU basketball is busy in the summer with players competing in tournaments across the country with area teams such as Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite for boys and Illinois Lady Lightning for girls. “In the last three years, it’s gone from probably three to four teams to where it is now with 19 teams,” said founder Dave Ruggles, whose program has players from across the suburbs. “We started with one team and we grew it from there.” Traveling teams also are huge for baseball, softball and soccer players, and the competition just as fierce. Some
soccer players choose to forgo their high school teams and focus solely on club ball, getting high-level instruction and college exposure with clubs such as Eclipse Select and Chicago Fire Juniors. Baseball and softball players also have a number of options in the offseason. Top Tier Baseball draws heavily from Chicago and the suburbs but also includes some players from downstate Illinois and northwest Indiana. Similarly, Longshots baseball is based in Downers Grove but draws from a wide area. can have with players at certain times, restrictions that are lessened during the summer, and since college coaches aren’t busy coaching their teams they are able to flock to the large tournaments and watch hundreds of the best players from across the country compete. “High school volleyball is not where the scholarships come from,” said Sue Keck, director and founder of 1st Alliance. “You pretty much have to play club to get that scholarship.” In the short term, a strong showing in a tournament in front of college coaches is a great way to gain notoriety and can lead to a next-level opportunity. Even if a scholarship doesn’t come at the end of the summer, playing against elite competition in the offseason is a great way to improve. “I always encourage our guys to play as much as they can. If they find a program that has a good mix of playing and teaching, I’m all for that,” Addison Trail boys basketball coach Brendan Lyons said. “Any opportunity to play is a good thing.”

Both sides of the line?
There are plenty of options available for high school athletes looking to stay competitive in their sports in between high school seasons, each one offering a little something different. Some programs focus on playing in highly-competitive tournaments with the thought being the competition will make players better, while other programs balance skill development and live competition. There is something to be gained from staying sharp in the offseason and playing outside of high school, and there are some tangible benefits in the form of college opportunities, but that’s for each athlete to decide. “If you want to test yourself against the kind of competition you see at the AAU level, it’s going to give you an edge as a player,” said Jim Thomas, boys varsity basketball coach at Downers Grove North and a 17U coach with Mercury Elite. “But I don’t tell the kids at Downers North they have to play.”

Baseball
Longshots Baseball, based in Downers Grove, has sent hundreds of players to college programs in 22 years of operation. Based out of Acceleration Sports Performance in Naperville, 29ers Baseball has a local flair. Top Tier, which bases its high school program at The Max in McCook, and DuPage Training Academy in Carol Stream also draw from across the western suburbs.

ing for their club or their high school, and a number of top players have gone the club route. On July 18 the Chicago Fire’s U-18 team won the national championship in the league with a few local products on the roster. The team played the bulk of its schedule in the Midwest-based Mid-America Division along with other Chicago area teams Sockers FC and Chicago Magic. The playoffs took place all over the country. As for girls soccer, the Elite Clubs National League is similar to the boys version. The year-round, travel-oriented league formed for the 2009-10 season. Local club Eclipse Select won the U-16 ECNL title last year. Unlike on the boys side, the girls can play for both club and high school, although not all do both. High school tennis teams typically boast some solid talent, but the level of competition at United States Tennis Association events gives athletes another outlet to test themselves. Kolie Allen from Glenbard East found success on the USTA circuit this summer after starring for the Rams during the most recent school year.
Volleyball
Illinois is a hotbed for volleyball (Loyola University won the last two NCAA men’s titles, besting Lewis University this year), and club programs such as Sports Performance in Aurora and 1st Alliance, which practices at The Max in McCook, stoke the fire with nationally competitive teams stocked with talent from the area. Both programs have double-digit Division I players in each graduating class and attract talent from all over the Chicago area.

Athletes who decide to specialize in one sport have plenty of options to choose from. Club and AAU teams not only offer top-notch competition, but also the chance to get noticed by coaches at the college level. Here are just some of the organizations in the area that provide playing opportunities outside of high school and junior high.
On the girls side, Lady Lightning is one of the premier programs; it starts with programs beginning in third grade and goes all the way through high school. The team typically has a number of Montini players, but draws players from all around the Chicago area. Lady Lightning had 11 players make college commitments in the Class of 2015. As for the boys, Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite all have local players. Lockdown was founded in 2011 by Joe Niego, a former NBA player. The Illinois Wolves also have a local tie with Mike Mullins founding the organization in 1999. Mullins had two sons, Bryan and Brendan, play at Downers Grove South before going on to play, and now coach, college basketball.
