Thomson prison says it is taking steps to address inmate misconduct

THOMSON–ThefederalpenitentiaryatThomsonhastakenthree stepstoaddressincidentsofreprehensiblebehavior–includinginmates exposingthemselvesandengagingin othersexualactsinfrontofemployees–theprisonsaidinanemail.

Theemailwasinresponseto a requestmadeofWardenThomasBergamiforcommentbyShawLocal NewsNetworkinlightofallegations recentlymadebytheprison’semployee’sunionthattheproblemwasnot beingaddressed.

Theprisonacknowledgedthedetrimentaleffectsthebehaviorcan haveonprisonstaff.

“Duetothecomplexmissionof USPThomson,thenumberofincidents withindividualsengagingin thesebehaviorshasbeenhigher,”the prisonsaid.“Inresponse,additional measureshavebeenimplemented.”

Thethreeactionstakenare:

1.Theprisonisidentifyingthecell doorsofinmatesengaginginthat behaviorandimplementing“alternativesecurityenhancements.”

2.Theprisonisattemptingto address thecorebehaviorspromptinginmatestoactoutanditisdevelopingaplanthatbalancestheneed foradditionalsecuritymeasures whilereducingopportunities that employeesmightencounterthemisconduct.

3.Theprisoneducatesemployees

concerningthehandlingandreportingoftheseincidentssotheycanbe referredtoanemployeeassistance programandtotheinmatediscipline program.Referralscaninitiateprosecutionprotocolsandinvolveamultidisciplinarycommittee,whichis responsiblefordevelopingbehavioralplansforinmatesafterthey commitprohibitedacts.

TheemailsaidtheBureauofPrisons,includingThomson,sharesconcernsaboutthefrequencyofthese incidents.

“Thissortofbehaviorisreprehensibleandcanhaveadamagingimpact onlawenforcementofficerswho alreadyworkinachallengingenvironment,”theprisonsaid.

Accordingtotheemailfromthe prison,staffmembersreceiveannual trainingregardingstrategiesfor addressinginmatesexualmisconduct andfornotifyingsupervisorsandfor filingincidentreports.

Theprisonsaidwhen inmatesare broughtin,theyarescreened.The prison’szero-tolerancepolicyregardingsexualabuseandsexualharassmentisexplained.

“Increasedmonitoringmaybe requiredforidentifyinghigh-risk inmates,”theprisonsaid.

ArecentnewsreleasefromAmericanFederationofGovernmen t Employeescalledfor theremovalof thewarden,sayingtherewere321 incidents ofinmates engaginginsexual misconduct against staffin 2022.

Mostparentswithyoungchildrenare familiarwithearinfectionsandmost childrenhavehadseveralbythetime theyreachage3.Theconditionarises whenthetubesconnectingthesinus,the eustachiantubes,becomeclogged.Fluid that sitstoolongmaybecomeinfected. Thiscloggingmaybecausedbycoldsor sinusinfectionsandleadtobacterialor viraldisease.Earachesaremorecommoninchildrenbecausetheeustachian tubeisshorterandsmalleranddoesnot drainaswellasinadults.

Someparentsarefamiliarwiththe symptomsoftraumaticearaches occurringinthemiddleofthenight.Inthe youngerchild,fussinessmaybetheonly symptom.Onoccasion,hearinglosswill be thepresentation.Unfortunately, sometimestherearenosymptomsuntil theconditionisfairlyadvanced.Appetitemaybedecreasedandthere maybe associatelistlessnessaswithanyprominentinfection.Theconditionmay worsenwhenthechildliesdownonthe sideoftheinfectedear.Sometimesthe eardrumwillburstandpuswilldrain

fromtheear.Infectionsusuallyclearup withinonetotwoweeks.

Treatmentforearinfectionsgenerallyinvolveantibiotics.Theytendto eliminatethebacteriathatcausemany earinfections.Sincethereisnowayto distinguishclinicallytheviralfromthe bacterial, antibioticsareprescribedfor mostcases.However,expertssaythere isnohurryto treattheseinfections becausemanywilldisappearontheir own.PainrelieverssuchasTylenolor Children’s Motrinmaybegivenat appropriatedoses.Awarm,nothot, heatingpadheldovertheearmayhelp relievethepain.Sweetoilandother homeremediesshould beavoidedas thesemayleadtodamage.Yourdoctor mayhaveatopicalpainreliever,but thisisgenerallyshort-lived.Itis importanttotakealloftheprescribed

medicationasdirected.

Improvementgenerallyshouldbe seenwithin48to72hours.Ifnot,you shouldletyourdoctorknow.Yourdoctormaywishtoseeyourchildagain aftertreatmentifitwasanunusually badinfection,ifyourchildisparticularly young,therehavebeenmany recurrences,orothersituationsasdiscussed.

Unfortunately,somechildrenseemto getoneinfection afteranother.Sometimeslow-doseantibioticsaregiven duringtheseasonof highrisk,namely winter,whenrespiratoryinfectionsare mostcommon.Avoidingcigarettesmoke isimportantsincethisisfelttobeadefiniteriskfactor.Allergiesalsomaylead tothetrapping offluidineustachian tubes.Effectivemanagementofthelattermaycutdownoninfectionsofthe ear.Iffluidstaysintheearformorethan threemonths,thereishearingloss,etc. Yourdoctormaywishtoconsidertubes todrainthefluid.These tendtoreduce thenumberofrepeatinfections,sometimesleadingtodramaticimprovement overnight.Tubesarelikeyesterday’s tonsillectomies–therearepeoplewho willbenefitfromthem,buttheyarenot

doneascommonly astheywereafew yearsagoasweseektoestablishbetter guidelinesforthosewhowillbenefit.

Some countrieswillnot treat ear infectionsforthefirstthreedays.Studies showthatmanyearinfectionsare self-limitingandyoumusttreateight casesofearinfectiontotreatone.Thisis onparformanymedicalconditions. Thus,somedoctorswillgiveoptionsto patientsinourcountry.Parentsmay givesomeconsiderationofwhentheygo tovisittheirdoctor.Factorsofconsiderationincludehowbadthepainisand othersignsofinfection,thepatient’s priorexperience,etc.
