Guardian Angel Basset Rescue A LABOR OF (PUPPY) LOVE By: Jessi Haish LaRue

F

loppy ears, short legs, and big hearts: it’s hard not to fall in love with a basset hound.

That’s what happened to Emmy and Larry Little, a married couple from Dwight, when they first bought a basset hound puppy from a pet store decades ago. It made them fall in love with the breed, but now, after 25 years with Guardian Angel Basset Rescue, they know that rescue is the only way for them. “I’m glad I did it or I wouldn’t be doing all this,” said Larry Little, board member and president of the rescue. The rescue, based in Dwight, now has a location on Washington Avenue in Hampshire. It was previously a laundromat, and the rescue took on the building as their newest location. Many contractors in the community helped with labor, construction essentials and donations.

8

n HAMPSHIRE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A generous facade grant from the Village of Hampshire allowed the 501(c) (3) nonprofit to create a building they are proud of. “We think we can get a lot of people involved in Hampshire,” Little said. “And that building shows we are committed to the future of this rescue.” Now the space is ready for hosting fundraising events, as soon as COVID-19 allows. The rescue is fosterbased, meaning they do not have a shelter building, and they have placed more than 5,000 dogs in homes over the last 25 years. Once a dog is in their care, they provide needed vet care before placing them in a foster home. They also help re-home bassets whose owners go into assisted living, or must relinquish their pet for other reasons. Board member Kelli Zopfi is excited to see the impact the rescue will have

in Hampshire. She said the group has received supportive commentary from the community in the last year, and she encourages people to stop in to their location to find out how they can get involved. Most recently, the group rescued eight basset hound-mix puppies, and five of them went to families in Hampshire. “[Rescue] helps put a smile on someone’s face,” she said. “You meet a lot of wonderful people and a lot of great dogs.” COVID-19 has had quite an impact on the rescue, including the inability to hold in-person fundraisers. They’ve adapted by choosing events such as a Queen of Hearts raffle, virtual auctions and more. As life returns to normal, however, they look forward to hosting in-person events in their new Hampshire building and getting to know the community. “We’ll do whatever they want to. And I’d love to see a basset on the water tower,” Little said with a laugh. They’ve also had fewer dogs available in the last year, and Little thinks it’s due to people staying home with and spending time with their dogs, rather than re-homing them. He thinks the stay-at-home order made people more forgiving of their pets. Unfortunately, he expects that to change once people return to their regular work and vacation lifestyles, and people will have

less time invested in their dogs. However, when there’s a hound in need of a home, the organization will be ready to help. Little said the rescue has done well in Dwight over the years, and they are looking forward to new connections and opportunities in Hampshire, especially working with the village and its residents. He just wants the organization to get “bigger, bigger and bigger” so that they can truly fulfill their mission of “no basset left behind – ANYWHERE.” Little emphasized that running a rescue is very expensive. The average cost of bringing in a dog, including sending them to their new home fully vetted, is $850. However, the adoption fee of the same dog is only $250. That’s where the donors come in, Little said. “I firmly believe you must be involved deeply with a charity,” he said. “It’s important to see things [that are] worse off than you and have that perspective.” Dogs have the power to change someone’s life, especially someone who may be struggling and need the extra push to make changes in their own life, he said. “Now they’ve got a dog to take care of, and it gets them out of bed and moving,” he said. “That attracts people to having a dog.”

And it’s hard not to love a basset. “They’re just a wonderful breed,” Zopfi said. “They rescue us more than we rescue them.” n TO LEARN MORE, visit BassetRescue.org or visit Guardian Angel Basset Rescue on Facebook.

Burlington

T

he Village of Burlington was incorporated in 1906 and is a village with a strong sense of community. Burlington marked its beginnings with a tavern in 1840, a post office in 1846, a general store in 1847 and finally incorporated in 1906. On the growth horizon are many opportunities for Burlington. Burlington is a quaint, rural community interested in economic development and has a positive image for growth while maintaining the “small-town” character. It is home to 26 businesses and 668 residents. Improvements to the Village of Burlington have progressed from the alignment of Plank Road and its first stop light, the resurfacing of Main Street, and total reconditioning of the water tower. Growth is imminent and the Village of Burlington is preparing for all potential growth and looking forward to opportunities to expand while maintaining its small town character.

n looking back to 2020, providing village services to residents and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging, but the Village continued to move forward under the leadership of outgoing Mayor Jeff Magnussen who served as Village President for 16 years. In 2020, the Village issued occupancy permits for over 500,000 square feet of industrial/warehouse space, adding to the Village’s already diverse property tax base, and 75 new home occupancy permits were issued. Local commercial businesses also continued to develop with Mama Toom’s Thai Restaurant and Jimmy’s Sport Bar having the courage to open new businesses during the pandemic. The Village granted three façade improvement grants for downtown properties improving the appearance of downtown. Residential growth continues in the village as Crown Community Development obtained final approval for its Oakstead subdivision after a 15-year downturn in the housing market finally turned sharply positive. The new subdivision will include 1,000 new homes, and a new D300 elementary school. Looking forward to 2021, newly elected Village President Mike Reid, has set Village priorities to strengthening two-way communication between village government and its residents, businesses, and other stakeholders, as well as increasing transparency in village government. These efforts will focus on traditional communications like the Village newsletter and water bills, as well as e-mail, text messaging and social media platforms. The Village will continue its focus on implementing new technologies to improve the quality and efficiency of Village operations and delivering Village services. In addition to new, upgraded software for Village departments, the Village provides recordings of board meetings on the Village website, on YouTube and meetings are also live streamed for residents.

Please visit the village website for information about activities and elected officials. For all inquiries: Contact the Village Hall at (847) 683-2181. Village Website: www.hampshireil.org

The Village will continue well-planned and responsible growth and improve services in 2021 with new projects including a new public works facility, the execution of the Village’s first 3-year Capital Improvement Plan, and continued build-out of multiple residential subdivisions and commercial projects already approved and others pending approval. Freight Union and Midwest Companies Construction and Demolition Recycling will begin construction this spring along with the 84-acre Hampshire Logistics Park at I-90 and Rt 20, currently under review. The Business Development Commission, under the leadership of former Trustee and BDC Chair Ryan Krajecki, will continue to focus on downtown development through the upcoming streetscape project and working with local property owners to recruit new businesses to downtown Hampshire and throughout the Village. THE VILLAGE OF HAMPSHIRE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS…

History of Hampshire

ussen with The village honors longtime Mayor Jeff Magn ussen Day. a street sign and proclaims May 7 as Jeff Magn

Originally known as Henpeck, the Village of Hampshire began when Zenas Allen of Vermont became its first settler in 1836. From 1837 to 1845 Henpeck existed along the Chicago – Galena Stagecoach Trial at Old State (Route 20), Big Timber, and Brier Hill Roads. Hampshire Township was organized in 1845, and the village’s name was changed to Hampshire. In 1876, the village relocated so that it could be along the line. Hampshire was officially incorporated that same year with Samuel Rowell as its first village president. In 1893, the farming community grew to become the second largest milk producing and shipping station in Illinois. Residents have served in the Civil War, and during World War II, Hampshire was chosen for a prisoner of war camp for 250 German soldiers who worked at the Inderrieden Canning Company.

Hampshire Pharmacy PROMOTING HEALTH WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH

P

arag and Rupal Maniar are bringing a holistic, personalized approach on health to the Hampshire area. Hampshire Pharmacy is celebrating 10 years of serving the local area. The pharmacy opened in 2011 on Oak Knoll Drive. They have been at 262 North State Street since 2014, and they truly enjoy serving their Hampshire area clients. “You get to know your patients and they become like family,” Rupal said. “I don’t see us going anywhere. This is it.” Both Parag and Rupal, husband and wife, and owners of the pharmacy, previously worked as pharmacists at retail chains until Parag was ready to take on something new. He would

16

n HAMPSHIRE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

By: Jessi Haish LaRue drive around, taking backroads to work, Rupal said, when he realized Hampshire did not have a pharmacy. They decided to open their own pharmacy and they’ve been serving the local community ever since. They strive for excellent customer service by offering personal consultation and delivery, something that would be hard to find at a bigger location. “It’s a completely different environment,” Rupal said. “You get stressed at the chains. It’s all about numbers, volume, you don’t know your patients … Everybody that comes in here, you know them. You know how many kids they have, if they have grandkids, you know about their pets.”

And in some ways, the Maniars even serve the Hampshire area’s pets. They carry various cannabidiol, or CBD, pet treats and products that naturally help furry friends, particularly dogs that struggle from separation anxiety, wild behavior, and even fear from Independence Day fireworks. It’s a result of the year that Parag spent extensively researching CBD products, which are pharmaceutical grade, Rupal said. Rupal said their biggest focus at the pharmacy now is the CBD products they carry. They’ve become so knowledgeable that they sell products as wholesale to more than 700 other small pharmacies such as their own. The products they carry help those with anxiety, pain and trouble sleeping. Rupal says it’s the “next wave” for healthcare, and she wants their patients to know about its different functions. “It’s been used for years and years and years, but it’s just now ‘out’ in the public,” Rupal said. “Some drugs are just like a bandaid, not getting to the root cause. If you go to the doctor they’re going to give you medication, but those medications have side effects. You get to a point where its just not going to work and you have to try something else. This is more of a natural approach.” She says a lot of their customers do not know much about CBD

products, but they are willing to answer any questions or concerns they may have, even if it’s about something you wouldn’t find on the shelf. When customers come in complaining that they can’t fall asleep, sometimes her husband Parag will recommend yoga or breathing techniques, she said. “And he’ll just stand here and show them an exercise,” she said. “They tell him ‘you should make a YouTube video!’” Rupal said she has noticed a younger population moving into Hampshire recently, and she’d like to teach them more about natural solutions for health problems. She envisions the pharmacy expanding its home health care section, and offering more natural products. She wants people to come in because they have a product that’s hard to find anywhere else, she said. “We have a holistic, more natural approach, because we’ve always used that in our house with our kids,” Rupal said. “If we can go with that route, we go that way rather than sell a product that’s not necessary.” Rupal encourages the community to stop in and learn more about the products they have available. She said they always take the time to get to know their patients. “Either myself or my husband are here,” she said. “We are aware of customer issues and follow up on it. We take care of our customers. I think people appreciate that.”

Midwest Companies

MAKING ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS ATTAINABLE

A

By: Jessi Haish LaRue recycling company will soon be planting roots in Hampshire to provide greener options for the growing community.

Midwest Companies is a family owned and operated business, with husband and wife team Steve and Veronica Berglund at the helm. They have multiple locations serving Chicago’s northwest suburbs, and they are hoping that their location coming to Hampshire, located on Briar Hill Road between Route 72 and Allen Road, will be open by this fall. The facility will be open to the public and will focus on recycling yard waste, demolition waste and construction waste. “All that material is otherwise going to landfills and filling that space,” owner Veronica Berglund said. “People don’t want landfills and they don’t want one in their backyard. So we help recycle.” Midwest Companies has been collecting and recycling material waste from demolition, construction and Class One railroad companies since 1988. The company’s goal is to reduce the environmental impact of waste in order to keep communities clean. This new facility coming to Hampshire will replace their location in East Dundee. “There seems to be a lot of growth potential [in Hampshire,]” said Jamie Hodge, the Berglund’s daughter and employee. “Everything seems to be booming and that caught our attention.”

Material Recycling & Dumpster Services (847) 426-6354 www.mwcompanies.com The family has a personal connection to Hampshire as well.

They look forward to reaching more people by having a new building in Hampshire.

“We are fully invested as to what this town has to offer and what businesses and facilities will be going in,” Hodge said of herself and her siblings who live in Hampshire. “We, as well as my parents, want nothing more than to see this village thrive and grow while maintaining that small-town feel.”

“We are a best kept secret,” Hodge said. “We are excited to be in our new facility, front and center, and make that facility look beautiful.”

The owners have spent 30 years morphing the business into what it is today. From starting out solely chopping up firewood to commercial land clearing for mulch and firewood, today, the company also gets wood from various avenues and even helps generate electricity for cities in Wisconsin and Minnesota. As a whole, the company provides a wide variety of services, including various disposal options, landfill diversion services, dumpster rental, waste removal services, sustainable railroad tie recycling, and products for local agriculture, such as compost. They also make a product that serves as an environmentally friendly platform for landfills. Hodge said these sustainability services keep communities greener. The team encourages people to reach out to learn more about their services and how they can implement them at their own homes or businesses.

Veronica Berglund said that 25 years ago, they were one of the first businesses in the area to be doing this type of recycling, especially on a larger scale. She said that her husband Steve is successful at figuring out solutions to problems and making it look easy.

In Hampshire, they hope residents will be interested in the positive impact on the environment and will want to take part in it by recycling. “I kind of hate to waste things,” Steve Berglund said. “‘Waste not, want not,’ as my mom used to say.” The Hampshire location will also have a roll-off dumpster business, and the owners hope residents and local businesses will find that service very convenient. Veronica Berglund said they all pride themselves on their customer service, which can at times be hard to find in this industry. “When you call, you get real people answering the phones,” Veronica Berglund said.

Pingree Grove T

he Village of Pingree Grove is a place to grow! The Village is incredibly proud to continue in its position as the fastest growing community in the state, with a wide variety of housing styles to meet all interests. We are working on a daily basis to expand the range of commercial offerings and shopping available to our residents, and with the growing population, we look forward to the establishment of a major commercial corridor along Route 47. The past year was challenging for everyone in a number of ways. Despite the challenges, residents helped support local businesses and we saw neighbors helping neighbors. New business investment continued with the construction of the new Kelly Williamson project, targeted to open in 2021. Among the businesses investing in Pingree Grove is the medical device manufacturer, Trident Manufacturing, who is constructing a new facility and producing new jobs in the Village. The Village’s streamlined development-review process and competitive tax environment ensures our continued status as a business-friendly community. The Village is lead by Village President Steve Wiedmeyer and the Village Board of Trustees comprised of Charles Pearson, Patricia Dulkoski, Amber Kubiak, Joseph Hirschbein, Luke Hall, and Raúl Lemus. Village Manager Jeff Cook leads the professional management team for the Village, comprised of Finance Director Karen Plaza, Police Chief Shawn Beane, and Public Works Director Pat Doherty. The Village works diligently to run efficient and productive operations, ensure beautiful neighborhoods and public amenities, and to provide high quality public services.

This next fiscal year presents many challenges and opportunities for the Village. Work is proceeding in earnest to design and finance expansions to the Village’s water and wastewater systems. Proposals to continue the residential growth of the village stand to increase the population toward establishing a strong commercial market opportunity for new retail activity. Certification of the U.S. Census will move Pingree Grove into new territory with respect to financing the police department and challenge the Village to find ways to afford public safety initiatives in keeping with the needs of the growing community. Needed investment in infrastructure and capital equipment purchases and maintenance will continue to vie for limited resources. Despite the challenges faced, Pingree Grove continues to be a place to grow! Stay informed by following us on our website at www.pingreegrove.org, or follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PingreeGroveIL. We look forward to this year and hope you all remain safe and healthy.

May See-A-Truck

The COVID-19 pandemic transformed many aspects of life, including the Village’s Touch-A-Truck event. The event typically draws hundreds of participants ready to touch the many makes, models, shapes and sizes of trucks, cars, emergency vehicles and construction equipment available to them. Due to the pandemic, the event will be again be held as “See-A-Truck,” with vehicles touring different neighborhoods within Pingree Grove.

June Community Wide Garage Sales

Every year around Father’s Day weekend, Pingree Grove puts out the welcome sign (and a lot of other good stuff too!) and invites the public to the Community Wide Garage Sales. A map is published to show where the sales are and what is being sold. With close to 200 homes participating, who can resist?

July Stars & Stripes Drive thru Parade

This event takes place the Saturday following the 4th of July. Although guidance on health and safety may affect what is possible this year, plans are in the works to provide a drive-thru parade for kids to get a swag bag filled with goodies, with a spectacular firework show Saturday evening that has been voted #1 in Kane County. We hope to bring back many other activities in 2022.

December Annual Tree Lighting Celebration This special event has taken place at the Municipal Center on the first Saturday in December and features music, kids’ crafts, a holiday train ride, coloring, storytelling and maybe a visit from you-know-who! Always a magical event to put you in the holiday spirit.

This event remains TBD based on health and safety guidance in effect at the time. Last year, the Grinch made an appearance at several businesses across the area who graciously supported the events committee during the previous year.

The Kave

A HANGOUT WITH HISTORY By: Jessi Haish LaRue

G

ina Pearson wants people to know that even as Hampshire may change, there’s one thing that stays the same, and that’s the Ruth family bar.

The Kave, 123 Washington Ave., has been in the Ruth family for 86 years, through different names and addresses in town. Siblings Gina Pearson and David Ruth are thirdgeneration owners of the bar. As the village continues to grow, Pearson wants people to think of their bar as just another stop during a night out in Hampshire. “We want you to think of us as the neighborhood bar,” she said. “We’re a laidback place if you just want to have drinks and don’t want to go too far.”

n ALL IN THE FAMILY

The Kave originally opened as the “High Life Tavern” on State Street in 1935. Ruth and Pearson’s grandfather, Charles Ruth, owned and operated the bar, which would later have various names such as “Chuck & Curly’s,” “Chuck & Walt’s” and then “Chuck’s Tap.” They moved to their current location in 1965 and Chuck brought on his son Orris as a partner. They operated the bar as “Chuck’s Pub.” Pearson and David Ruth recalled visiting the bar as children so they could hang out with their father and grandfather. Their father would give children a pack of M&M’s when they stopped in with their family. “Now [David] does that too,” Pearson said. “It’s tradition.” The bar’s infamous shuffleboard came from the previous building on State Street and has been with the family since 1948. Pearson laughed recalling a story about the very long shuffleboard being carried right down the street into its current home. They still have weekly tournaments on the same board.” “The shuffleboard is a staple in town,” Pearson said. Once David Ruth became an owner, the bar name was changed to “The Kave,” a combination of David and his brother Karl’s names. Their father Orris Ruth still owns the current building, and worked there up until a few years

ago, even as his son had started to operate things behind the bar. But when modern changes came, especially an updated Point-of-Sales system, Orris said ‘I’m not doing that.’ “He’s very stuck in his ways. We’re definitely all from the same tree,” Pearson said with a laugh. Even so, Pearson and Ruth have found a way to work together, and it works well. “I’m just a quiet guy with ideas in my head, and [Gina] makes it all happen,” he said. The family is proud of their history and heritage in Hampshire, which includes a long line of military veterans that patronize the The Kave. Many veterans leave a patch to display behind the bar. With veterans in their own family, it’s an important tradition for the owners. Both Pearson and Ruth still enjoy hearing stories from their father and customers about “the good old days,” and the family has an extensive scrapbook filled with decades of bar memories. Both siblings want to continue that legacy for as long as they can. “We’re keeping what my grandfather and dad wanted to do; we’re keeping it growing and going,” Pearson said. A lot of familiar faces can be found at the bar, and many visitors have a favorite bartender, Pearson said. It’s a perk of being in the area for so long. “It’s good to have a local place for local people,” Ruth said. “We’re almost like the backbone for this town.”

n ADAPTING TO COVID

The Kave’s owners had to quickly reassess and pivot once COVID-19 restrictions set in last year, Pearson said. Fortunately, they have a dual liquor license and were able to sell liquor to customers just like a liquor store would.

150 Years Strong. O2 and You. Moving Forward Together.

They worked with local food trucks that were also struggling in order to provide an outdoor experience for residents. The Kave does not serve food, so the pairing worked well and they hope to continue those events in the future. “That’s really how we survived,” Pearson said. Member FDIC

n LOOKING FORWARD

Pearson is excited watching their part of town be “revitalized” as the village works on that area and new places such as Guardian Angel Basset Rescue move in. They enjoy working on community benefits as well, such as benefits for local families, schools and service organizations. “We really want to bring more people to this downtown area,” Ruth said.

They look forward to working with the village on upcoming outdoor events as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease. They purchased the lot adjacent to their building in the hopes of hosting more events such as live music and food truck opportunities. They’ve also recently added video gaming machines to the bar. “We want to keep people local, people from Hampshire should be drinking and hanging out in Hampshire,” Pearson said. “Times have changed, but we’re still here.”
