GET TO KNOW: CHRISTINE VAN DE WEGE

Oak Brook woman named VP at Hinsdale, La Grange hospitals By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK — Christine Van De Wege has worked in the cancer field for a long time. If it has taught her anything, it’s that treating the mind is just as important as treating the body. “I’ve heard it over and over again from cancer patients that getting cancer was the best thing that ever happened to them,” Van De Wege said. “It sounds strange to us, but I think what those patients are experiencing is a clarity of what’s important that you don’t necessarily get in life until you’re faced with your life ending.” Van De Wege recently was named vice president of integrated services for Adventist Hinsdale and La Grange Memorial hospitals. She has worked with Adventist Midwest Health since 2011, most recently as executive director of oncology services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. She also is leading the design of the new Adventist Cancer Institute based in Hinsdale. One of the most important factors when designing the cancer center and separating it from others, Van De Wege said, is to make sure it doesn’t just have state-of-the-art equipment, but the ability to treat a patient

About Christine Van De Wege Age: 43 Residence: Oak Brook Education: Bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and master’s from Northwestern University Notable: This is the third cancer center Van De Wege is helping design without equipment. “We are working on a patient experience that will be new to the world where each patient will be assigned a nurse navigator and a journey guide to help them throughout their cancer journey,” she said. “We are focusing not just on the main physiological effects of cancer, but the body/mind/spirit connection.” The Adventist Cancer Institute, set to open in fall 2014, will be a 55,000-square-foot building. It will house radiation oncology, medical oncology, nutrition counseling, psychosocial counseling and integrated services. Each room will have its own theme and patients can choose their preference. There also is no waiting room. Instead, patients have options to go to the in-house chapel, the library, entertainment center or gift ship, and they’ll be notified when it’s time to see the doctor.

Christine Van De Wege of Oak Brook recently was named vice president of integrated services for Adventist Hinsdale and La Grange Memorial hospitals. She also is leading the design of the new Hinsdale-based Adventist Cancer Institute. “My goal is to integrate the service lines so that patients have a coordinated, wonderful experience, from the time of diagnosis to their inpatient procedures and inpatient stays, to outpatient treatment and rehabilitation,” she said. “I’d like to make that seamless to them.”

February is Pet Dental Health Month! Animal Care and Reproductive Services, LLC takes your dog’s and cat’s teeth very seriously! Did you know that dogs and cats should not have “doggie” or “kitty” breath? Did you know that bad breath can be a sign of gingivitis and other problems with your animal’s oral health? A healthy mouth is important to maintain a healthy dog or cat. When your pet’s teeth accumulate a lot of tartar, the tarter provides a perfect place for bacteria to grow. As the bacteria on your pet’s teeth and gums grow, the gums become irritated and they allow the bacteria to get into your pet’s body through the gaps created between the gums and teeth, just like in people! Once that gross bacteria has gained entrance into your pet’s body, it can settle in various organs, like the heart or the kidney, and cause greater problems with your pet’s health. Because of this, dental health is especially important in older pets, or pets with other health concerns. Daily brushing will help reduce tartar and bacterial accumulation and gingivitis, however, like people, your pet needs a trip to his or her dentist for a thorough teeth and gum cleaning that brushing cannot provide. ACRS offers full dental health services. We have a state of the art ultrasonic dental scaler, much like your dentist uses on you. We follow each scaling with a thorough polishing and then finish your pet’s dental cleaning with a special sealant to help prevent accumulation of tartar and harmful bacteria. Schedule an appointment today so we can check your pet’s teeth and let you know if it is time for your dog or cat to have a dental cleaning! If you schedule an exam for February 11, 2013, Dental Health Check-up Day, you and your pet will receive a free dental health gift with the exam*! *while supplies last

‘When I saw all the scores were 800, I kind of freaked out’

“Ronda Rousey. She’s a mixed martial artist and premiere UFC fighter.” Bree Marie Hinsdale

Sarah Minor – sminor@shawmedia.com

Hindale South senior Lia Benes works on the school’s newspaper on Jan. 30. Lia doesn’t just take on this schedule to impress colleges, but she actually enjoys it and grows with jubilation when she reminisces about old times. “I love government,” she said. “I took that last semester and that was probably the most fun class I had ever taken. I had the opportunity to be Speaker of the House in our simulated Congress and it was just so cool.” Lia took the SAT twice for National Merit. After receiving a score of around 2,300 in October, her counselor told her that even with that high of a score, she could do better. Lia went about studying the same way as before, doing practice problems online and just going through her regular routine in school. “I don’t really think you can prep for these standardized tests more than just paying attention in school and learning your grammar really well,” Lia said. “Pacing is really important. I tend to go through the sections really fast and then I go back and look at problems that I had been questioning.” Lia said she couldn’t be-

lieve the score when she got the results from the SAT right at the start of her winter break. Her dad, Kevin, said he knew Lia would do well on the test, but wasn’t expecting a perfect score, especially after she scored perfect on the ACT. “I was stunned,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing to think you can take a test like that and get all the questions right.” Her mom, Debbie, said Lia had a curiosity about the world at an early age and has always wanted to learn more. “She jumped right into computers early on and looked up things on the Internet,” Debbie said. “I started to notice her interest in global news, politics and this was at a young age at a time when I didn’t even think she was aware of what was going on in the world.” It’s this natural wonder and questioning of the world that Lia contributes to her success. “I think that’s part of what makes school not really torture for me, just because I’m curious enough that it usually

doesn’t get boring,” Lia said. Aside from her family, Lia has received guidance and help from strong role models, such as her AP physics teacher, David Bonner. “He’s always wanted me to be more independent and he’s always challenged me,” she said. “He really pushes me outside of my comfort zone, especially when he has us do real-world experiments.” Lia has now been named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Inclusion in the program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors, and she was selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. She also is busy applying to colleges as a biochemistry major, with the hopes of becoming an anesthesiologist or working in genetics. “Lia is one of the most exceptional students I’ve ever taught,” Bonner said. “I think Lia will be outstanding in any field she chooses.”

“Sandra Bullock. I like her.” Christine Martin Visiting Hinsdale

“Bette Midler. She’s funny.” Donna Reynolds Willowbrook

HSL

WILLOWBROOK — Oscar Wilde once said, “experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” Seventeenyear-old Lia Benes couldn’t agree more. For her, it was through the ups and downs that she eventually earned a perfect score on both the ACT and SAT standardized tests. “I ask questions all the time and I yell out wrong answers all the time,” said Benes, of Willowbrook. “You just have to get over that embarrassment because that’s how you learn.” Lia is a senior at Hinsdale South High School. In December, she scored a perfect 2,400 on the SAT. As a junior, she got a perfect 36 on the ACT. “It sometimes doesn’t feel like it’s real,” she said. “It hasn’t really settled in yet, but of course I’m happy about it. I’m just waiting for them to tell me their machines broke.” On one hand, Lia does a lot of homework and going to a museum is like her candyland, but on the other, she’s what some people would call surprisingly normal. Lia is a typical teenager who enjoys hanging out with her friends. She also likes to play percussion and dance, is editor of her school newspaper, does Scholastic Bowl and is a member of Hinsdale South’s National Honor Society and Spanish club. “I do a lot outside of school,” she said. “I like to keep busy.” That’s when Lia talked about her class schedule this semester, which to get through each day — combined with her extracurriculars — may be almost more impressive than the perfect scores. If she has an activity, she gets to school around 7:15 a.m. Her weekday starts with English, Advanced Placement chemistry, AP physics and an independent statistics study course because she took calculus last year and the school doesn’t have a more advanced course. Then she finishes with Spanish honors, lunch, band and gym.

If you could have anyone play you in a movie about your life, who would it be?

Property damaged

Bank officials at Northern Trust Bank, 4 N. Washington St., reported that between Jan. 1 and 28, local customers reported their ATM accounts had been fraudulently used

to withdraw funds from various Chicago-area banks. Bank officials have preliminarily determined that a skimming device may have been placed in the ATM within the facility, which recorded the numerics and/or PIN numbers of customers using the machine. Between Jan. 26 and 29, custom-

bingon announced that she has filed to withdraw from the April 9 contest for School Board member at Hinsdale Township High School District 86.

She said she and her husband had accepted an offer to buy their residence in Darien and the transaction will close before the election. In the short-term, Babbin-

gon intends to relocate within the district, but the long-term situation is uncertain. Babbingon said in her letter she is “very disappointed to have to

TAX TIPS

by

JUDI STRAUSS, E.A.

2013 MAY BE THE YEAR TO HIRE A TAX PROFESSIONAL

Why? This is why: • The Taxpayer Relief Act was signed by President Obama on January 1, 2013 and knowing which laws have been extended and exactly what is in place for both 2012 and especially for 2013 is not simple. The new law did not simplify taxes; in fact, they can be complex for both this year - and in years to come. • Final IRS forms may not be available immediately due to many late changes from this law. Final Broker’s statements may also be late. • The do your self tax programs are only as good as the information you enter- and where it is entered - and we have been contacted by taxpayers with IRS notices - asking for more taxes ) and penalties plus interest) due to errors on self prepared returns. STRAUSS TAX SERVICE (as Enrolled Agents, licensed to practice before the IRS) can accurately prepare your 2012 tax return, answer your questions on the current tax laws and those for 2013 and save you money. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9 AM - 9 PM daily.

Members of Kidz in the Mix practice their routine at the Oak Brook Park District.

Local girls who dance with Kidz in the Mix could use our good vibes. They recently auditioned for a major reality talent show. And while the show’s producers reportedly were impressed with their act, a little sidebending and virtual high kicks of our own might help inch them further toward their goal. The Hinsdale Police Department is getting creative with its resources. It recently launched a volunteer program seeking outside help from residents to perform records services, greet people in the lobby and serve as public information, investigative services or traffic aides. Police also are seeking community members who have specialized skills, such as information technology or web design. Any assistance provided would both help police and bolster volunteers’ resumes.

“Hi, I’m the public library.” “Oh, sure, we’ve met before. Nice to see you. I’ve got to go meet some people.” “People who want to lend you their copies of the newest books and movies? Give you a Kindle for a week?” “Um …” “People who want to introduce your kids to stories and activities that will give them a leg up in school?” “I’m not sure about that …” “People who think that your every question is fascinating and want to spend their time helping you learn more about cooking, travel, medical conditions, Civil War history, dog breeds, colleges and baby names?” “I’m sorry. Who did you say you are again?” One of the great things about working in a public library is that when you introduce yourself, people’s faces light up and they say, “Oh, the library!” One of the challenges is that the library they’re imagining is often one filled with wooden card catalogs, dusty books and rows upon rows of The Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature. A survey conducted in preparation for Hinsdale Public Library’s 2012-15 Strategic Plan revealed that stakeholders believed “increased public awareness about library services” to be the best area of opportunity for the library. In response, the library board

New logo reflects our open doors

To the Editor: Residents of the former 13th Congressional District wish to thank the woman who represented them in Congress for seven terms, a woman of outstanding intelligence, integrity and compassion — Judy Biggert! Judy’s care for constituents was boundless. The congresswoman’s efforts to listen to people’s ideas, needs and concerns were endless. She connected with voters in a variety of ways. She met voters hand to hand while walking in hot, cold, windy or rainy parades joined by numerous loyal volunteers. Often she held “Conversations with Judy” in constituents’ homes. Frequently, she could be seen walking door to door in precinct after precinct. At times she was heard “talking and listening” in telethons and forums. She was faithful in reading letters from the public and responding to their concerns. Anyone who wished to meet with her in person was welcomed. And not to be forgotten were the meetings and parties

Young people often get job advice from parents

Dottie and Al Kugel

To the Editor: As anyone with a teenage son or daughter may tell you, it may seem like the least likely place high school students turn to for advice is their parents. And with today’s constant flood of television, movies, social media and peer pressure, teenagers have more outside influencers than ever before. However, a new survey of high school students conducted by Everest College found that more than six in 10 respondents — the highest percentage of any response — say they find out about job and career choices from their parents or guardians. Parents, your influence on your teen’s future educational and career choices cannot be overestimated. In fact, a similar Everest survey found that lack of parental and educational support is the most common reason younger Americans drop out of high school. With the spring semester under way, I encourage you to spend time with your teens as they begin to map out their futures — particularly if graduation is around to corner. The time you take now can play a crucial part in setting up your child for future success.

Judy hosted in her own home. Judy was approachable to all. Her peers in Congress voted her as being the congressperson most able to bring opposing sides together in working out solutions. It is regrettable that the former 13th District was reconstructed in a way that denied a majority of Judy’s strong supporters in earlier elections an opportunity to vote for her in the 2012 election. The majority of Judy’s supporters were put in congressional districts that did not include her. Of course, this change was perfectly legal. But the redistricting changes made it almost impossible for Judy to win back her seat in Congress. Words are inadequate and insufficient to express appreciation to Congresswoman Judy Biggert for representing so successfully the voters in the former 13th District. Judy’s voting public applauds her for choosing to serve our country in the public sector for so many years. Congresswoman Judy Biggert will be sorely missed by her constituents and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Ann and John Grube Hinsdale Hinsdale

Zumba class raises awareness about heart disease Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women, but women are affected more as the disease causes one in three women’s deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association. “I think there’s so much more awareness of the cancers, especially breast cancer, and I think heart disease is one of those things where it’s denial,” said Maryann Romanelli of Hinsdale, one of the organizers for the Go Red For Women Day last week. “If someone diagnoses you with cancer, you’re usually sick or you find a lump, but with heart disease, I think

it’s the No. 1 killer because people deny symptoms.” The instructor of the Zumba class, Sanny Jones, knows all too well about the dangers of heart-related issues. Her daughter, Hadasah, suffered from a heart defect when a large hole and a small hole formed in the organ. Her heart was enlarged 30 percent, but after surgery, it went back to regular size. One of the worries Jones had was how aware her daughter was of what was happening. Nurses at Children’s Memorial Hospital encouraged her to talk with her daughter and turn it into

a positive situation. “We named (her scar) ‘pretty,’ so she is very proud of her pretty now,” Jones said. “Now she says, ‘Momma, kiss my pretty,’ so it’s not something negative; it became something that is hers and she’s OK with it.” Romanelli, a registered nurse, said the best way to avoid complications with the heart is to stay educated and do cardio workouts, such as Zumba. According to the AHA, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Dancing yourself sweaty

Autoimmune condition?

Living with an autoimmune disorder can affect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life… time with your kids, grandkids, activities like golfing, biking, yard work and gardening. Did you know that leaky gut syndrome is a precursor to an autoimmune disease? Did you know that your gut makes up 80% of your immune system? An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your own body. There is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders, but you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY. My name is Dr. Jeffrey E Forzley, with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the whole body and the many systems of the body, integrate their relationships, manage the underlying cause and use natural methods to manage autoimmune disorders.

Are you suffering with any of these autoimmune disorders? • Hashimotos Throiditis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Graves Disease • Multiple Sclerosis • Scleroderma • Sjogren’s Syndrome • Type 1 Diabetes • Myasthenia Gravis • Ankylosing Spondylitis • Perniscious Anemia

• Lupus • ALS • Psoriasis • Vasculitis • Celiac Disease • Crohn’s Disease • Addison’s Disease • Urticaria (Hives) • Eczema • Raynauds

Medications are not always the long term answer. Medications can give you temporary relief but they DO NOT ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE of your immune imbalance. All medications have side effects. These side effects can be more detrimental than the original symptoms sometimes.

Did you know that medications to treat autoimmune conditions can WEAKEN your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer? There is a time to use medications but not before a NATURAL way to manage the underlying imbalance. So how do I help people with autoimmune disorders? I use a combination of specific NEUROLOGICAL protocols and NUTRITION recommendations… Neuro-Metabolic Therapy. Your Brain (nervous System) controls all other systems of the body. It controls your immune system. digestive system, endocrine (hormone) system… so if you have an immune system imbalance or autoimmune condition, evaluating and managing the nervous system is required for optimal improvement.

Your immune system. There are 2 parts to the front line defense of your immune system… TH1 (white blood cells) and TH2 (antibody response). These 2 parts should work in balance together. But when you are suffering from an autoimmune disorder, one part is out of balance (dominant). This leads to an imbalance in TH3 which in turn leads to an autoimmune response.

Testimonials

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (autoimmune thyroid) three years ago. My endocrinologist recommended surgery to remove my thyroid and put me on medication for the rest of my life. I searched for an alternative treatment to save my thyroid and found Dr. Forzley. Through comprehensive lab testing he found out what was causing my immune system to attack my thyroid. I have been receiving treatments and following his recommendations exactly and my lab numbers are now normal, my endocrinologist is happy, my medication has been reduced in half and I feel better. I highly recommend Dr. Forzley and his natural approach. Samantha R. I suffered from unbearable itching caused by Hives (chronic autoimmune Urticaria) for over 33 years. Steroid medications helped the symptoms temporarily but the side effects were bad. After an in-depth blood and metabolic analysis, Dr. Forzley found the cause of my problem. After 4-5 months of strictly following his recommendations, my hives are completely gone and I feel great. Cheryl P. If your immune system is not managed properly, your condition can worsen, result in a poor quality of life, cause a shortening of the length of your life and cause other autoimmune disorders. Holistic Therapy can manage autoimmune conditions by: 1) finding and balancing the underlying cause. 2) lowering the self destructive effects of the immune system. 3) using natural therapies that work with your body.

I can work with your immune system NATURALLY and balance the TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17. You can never be cured of an autoimmune disorder. BUT, you can get symptom relief and calm down the immune attack on you own body. You must get a detailed immune system evaluation followed by specific recommendation based on those tests. Guess what stimulates TH1?Vitamin C. But if you are TH1 dominant, Taking vitamin C will WORSEN your immune response. That’s right worsen. We need to identify which part of your immune system is dominant in order to calm down the immune system. I don’t treat or cure autoimmune disorders. By using specific neurological and nutritional protocols, I help to decrease your body’s inflammation, detoxify your body, balance TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17 which NATURALLY boosts your immune system. THAT is how I address autoimmune disorders.

Stepping up her game Erin Gentile of Downers Grove to compete at World Irish Dancing Championships By ALLISON HORNE msleditorial@shawmedia.com Seventeen-year-old Erin Gentile has come a long way since she was 8 and fell in love with an Irish dancer’s sparkly dress on stage. Now, the Downers Grove South High School junior is wearing a sparkly dress of her own, and is headed to the World Irish Dancing Championships — for the fourth time. Gentile has been dancing for nine years with the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, where she has emerged as one of the most promising competitors. At the contests, dancers first compete in a pair for two rounds, and if the judges like what they see, dancers are called back to perform solo. To qualify for the World Championships, one must place in the top 10 percent at regionals or nationals. This year, Gentile placed 21st at regionals, and automatically qualified for the World Championships, which will be held in Boston the last week of March. Last year, Gentile placed in the top 100 at the World Championships, but this year, she’s got her sights set a little bit higher.

What are your goals?

This year, it’s to be in the top 50. You do the first two rounds with other people, and if the judges like what they see, they recall you, and you’re in the top third, so you get to do a round by yourself. I’ve made it to the top third in every competition except at the World Championships.

What kind of work goes into preparing for something like that?

What we do for the World Championships is usually classes four days a week, and then I try to practice an hour and a half every day on my own that I don’t have practice. It seems like a lot, but I don’t mind it. I also run at Downers South. It’s a lot, but I enjoy everything.

Where do you see yourself taking Irish dancing?

It’s my passion and I’ve loved it since I started and I don’t want to stop — even if it’s not competing. I love performances and I love going to other countries and performing in other cultures. Some Dog Owners Didn’t Believe It... BUT It’s True. Too good to be true, or is it? Hi. My name is John O’Driscoll and I couldn’t believe it when a new dog owner customer of mine told me what her girlfriends were doing. Before I get into that, let me ask you a question. Have you seen our free 1st grooming? Well, if you’re like a recent customer of ours, you might be thinking that it’s not for real or there’s a catch or there might be some sneaky upsell when you come in. (It’s Real.) But, first, let me say: I get it... I get it... in life there always

seems to be a catch. And I know when it seems like something is too good to be true, it usually is... except this time I want you to know this is a genuine offer from a genuine grooming shop. So why am I doing this? Frankly, we want your business. I think we give such great service that I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is and pay my groomer to groom your dog. At the risk of sounding too confident, I think we have one of the best groomers in DuPage County. All you have to do is call us today. Call 630-969-3145. Just ask us for the free grooming offer you saw in the paper and we’ll take care of the rest. Obviously, I can’t do an unlimited number of these.

There is only a couple of spots available per day, so if you have a need for a really great grooming, so you can have the best looking dog in the neighborhood, call us today. 630-969-3145. So, back to my customers girlfriend... after she got her free grooming with us, she told her girlfriends that we were the real deal... so a bunch of her girlfriends went looking through their recyclables looking for the paper with our ad. So, instead of getting caught in this situation, why not just give us a call and get your appointment today. Again you can call us at

Class: 4A Sectional seed: No. 5 Regional: Hinsdale Central Regional opener: 7:30 p.m. Thursday vs. No. 11 Oak Park or No. 21 Juarez Outlook: Rebounding from a down 2011-12 season, the Red Devils have nearly doubled their win total this winter. But the squad has hit a rough patch of late, dropping five of the last eight games. Hinsdale Central will try to turn that around once the postseason hits and has the advantage of hosting its own Class 4A regional. “We have a regional at home and that’s huge,” said Hinsdale Central coach Tom McKenna. “That makes a big, big difference though our road is very tough.” Netting the No. 5 seed at the Trinity sectional, the Red Devils will most likely face West Suburban Silver conference-foe Oak Park-River Forest in a regional semifinal matchup. No. 4 Bogan would be the probably opponent in the regional final. “We’ve already played them (OPRF) twice and they are a good team,” the coach said. “Both games have come down to the last couple of minutes and beating a team three times is not the easiest thing in the world. And whoever wins that game will be in a battle with Bogan, who is very good. No one game is guaranteed.” The top three seeds at the sectional are Whitney Young, Trinity and Fenwick. “It’s a loaded sectional but not like some years where the teams were untouchable,” McKenna said. Gabrielle Rush leads the team with her 22.5 points per game while Lily Sarros checks in with 12.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per outing. Maddie Roglich (7.4 points) and Jenna Broz (6.5 rebounds) have also been major contributors.

Hinsdale South

Class: 4A Sectional seed: No. 8 Regional: Little Village ( Chicago) Regional opener: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday vs. No. 9 North Lawndale or No. 22 Little Village Outlook: This season has been a memorable one for the Hornets, who despite having just one returning starter, captured their second consecutive West Suburban Gold conference title. Hinsdale South will have a chance to add another chapter to its unlikely story though the playoff path is far from easy. Receiving the No. 8 seed at the Class 4A Trinity sectional, the Hornets will most likely face No. 9 North Lawndale in a regional semifinal matchup. No. 1 seed Whitney Young, one of the top teams in the state of Illinois, would await in the regional final. “Obviously, it’s a tough regional for us,” said Hinsdale South coach Jen Belmonte. “Whitney Young in there is not the best option. And North Lawndale, looking at their record and who they’ve played, they are pretty good. “I don’t think people have given them (North Lawndale) too much credit. They are right behind Whitney Young in their conference I believe and I think they beat Westinghouse twice who we struggled with at the Montini tournament. It is not an easy regional matchup for us.” What does give Hinsdale South plenty of hope is the play of senior guard Toni Romiti, who is averaging just over 20 points per game. The Hornets have also gotten major contributions from guard Mary Clare Ladd, guard/ forward Mackenzie Kern and post players Kristin Dimitrijevic and Kerry Just.

Close to clinching

Red Devil boys can secure league title with 3 games in 5 days

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com There is only one thing more fun than playing meaningful games in February, according to Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre. Playing meaningful games in March. Latorre’s boys basketball team, which is riding an eight-game winning streak, has accomplished the first part of that equation as the league-leading Red Devils prepare for a crucial fourgame stretch to finish the West Suburban Silver season. The squad heads into Friday’s road matchup against Proviso West with a 7-1 mark in the league. York, which Hinsdale Central plays on Tuesday, stands at 7-2 and Oak Park-River Forest is next with three losses. A game against Lyons Township on Saturday and a Friday, Feb. 15 contest vs. Glenbard West round out the slate. “We have four games in eight days,” Latorre said. “It will be interesting. It will definitely determine the outcome of the league. “We play York in there and Proviso West, they just beat Oak Park and York their last two games. They are playing really well right now.” In fact, Proviso West has won five consecutive conference games after opening up league play 0-4 which included a 69-54 loss to the Red Devils back on Dec. 21. “They have Dominick Roby back,” Latorre said. “Seeing them on tape, they are playing extremely hard. They are really getting after it. They have

We need to take care of the ball and rebound no doubt.” As for LT, the Lions are always dangerous despite their 2-7 conference mark. “They came in last year and beat us,” Latorre said. “They shoot the

heck out of it. We will have to play really well.” Hinsdale Central was last in action on Friday when it beat Metea Valley 50-46 in overtime to move the winning streak to eight games. Matt Rafferty had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way.

Six champs lead Red Devils to regional title By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com In describing his team’s performance at its own regional last weekend, Hinsdale Central wrestling coach Jason Hayes kept it short. “They wrestled pretty good,” Hayes said. “It was a pretty good day.” The Red Devils were better than just pretty good. They had six regional champions and 11 sectional qualifiers as they won the regional title with 230 points. Runner-up Lyons Township tallied 149 points. “Overall, guys wrestled great,” Hayes said. “They stayed tough and

winners. James Manikas (126) and Andrew Pyle (195) made it to championship matches and finished second, while Tom Ward (145), Keith Schmidt (170) and Matt Allen (220) won third place matches. All move on to the sectional, where the competition will be ever more fierce. “This sectional is tough,” said Hayes, who noted Sandburg, Marist and St. Rita are particularly tough opponents. “You have to be ready to wrestle. You can’t get caught up in the records or rankings, which is something we talk about with the kids. No matter the records or the rankings. there are upsets every year. Why not

be the one to pull the upset? “This week is huge as far as the state tournament goes. We have to stay focused, get guys on the podium and get guys downstate.” Hinsdale South finished fourth as a team at the Hinsdale Central regional and qualified six for the sectional. Justin Maslow won a title at 145 pounds, improving to 37-2 on the season. Joshua King was the 220 champ and ran his record to 29-5. Nick Perisin (113) and Mark Kosiek (132) had runner-up finishes while Ed Murphy (120) and Nick Carlson (126) won third place matches to keep their seasons going.

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com After a disappointing regional meet, Hinsdale Central senior Erin Morgan knew she had to step it up for the sectional meet or it could be her last. Morgan came up big when she needed to at the Hinsdale Central sectional on Wednesday. She was second behind Lyons Township’s Kelsy Kurfirst in the all-around with a 37.625 score. “I was a little shaky at State regionals so I knew I had to gymnastics be confident going into this week,” Morgan said. “I knew When: Friday and it was going to be one of my Saturday, Feb. 15-16 last meets so I went all out.” Where: Palatine High Morgan topped Kurfirst on School, 1111 N. She also qualified individually for state on floor, but her closing highlight was a 9.725 on vault that tied her with Kurfirst for first. “It was definitely very exciting for me,” Morgan said. “I basically did the same exact thing last year, same exact score and everything so it definitely brought my confidence up a lot for state.” The Red Devil standout is hoping for one more highlight to her high school career. “I just want to go in and hit 4-for-4 just like I did today,” Morgan said. “I made state finals last year. I want to at least make it on one event again just to have that experience.” Hinsdale South freshman Maddie Nowak also earned automatic spots at state via top-five finishes in vault (9.525), uneven bars (9.475) and floor (9.425).

CAR Q&A

Opening a shop Q: I am opening a three-bay repair shop and would like your opinion on companies that provide service repair information. A: The first step is to listen to the customer and understand they are in your shop because they have a vehicle problem or just need routine service. I rely on Identifix and Alldata information services. The initial cost may scare you, but keep in mind both will save a lot of time, which equals to a lot of money saved.

CARS WE REMEMBER

More Nash-Kelvinator memories Q: Did a Nash ever pace the Indy 500? I say yes; my retired friends here at the nursing home say no. We are all car crazy and racing fans. Can you tell us more about Nash and that era of the automobile? Elwood K., Worchester, Mass. A: Elwood, you win! Nash was the official pace car of the Indy 500 in 1947 and was driven by George W. Mason, president of Nash-Kelvinator. Mason was a marketing genius who used Nash automobiles in the “Superman” TV series, too. As I’ve touched on in the past, Kelvinator and Nash formed a corporate merger in 1937 when Charles Nash, then CEO and president of Nash Motors, merged his company with George W. Mason’s Kelvinator Corp., known for refrigeration. Mason thus began a major marketing campaign that to this day is respected as novel and very effective. To help people break the habit of texting and driving, technology companies are coming up with solutions. For instance, Xperia SmartTags by Sony can be put on a dashboard or a set of car keys and allow you to change your phone’s settings for driving by touching your NFC-enabled smartphone to the tag. Smartphone applications can make this process even easier. When paired with AT&T’s Drive Mode app, you can automatically disable your phone’s texting and calling capability. The app can be programmed to include an automatic message that’s sent to anyone who texts you while you’re behind the wheel.

The original Batmobile - the one seen in the 1960s TV series starring Adam West - recently sold for $4.6 million at an auction, CNN reported.
