Bird watchers kick off 2013 with hike

nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A pair of great horned owls were among the first birds added to the 2013 lists of bird watchers during an annual New Year’s Day bird walk in Batavia.

The two owls were spotted in a grove of pine trees while bird watchers with the Kane County Audubon Society hiked through Dick Young Forest Preserve on Tuesday morning. Equipped with binoculars, cameras, layers of clothing and hand-warmers, about 20 people took a brisk hike around Nelson Lake, stopping occasionally to listen for chirping or spot a few coyotes.

Rhonda Nelson has been leading the annual bird walk for several years. She said many people keep lists of the birds they see throughout the year and start their lists during the walk.

“I grew up in this area and it’s amazing all the birds you see here,” said Nelson, adding her life list of birds consists of 438 species.

Bob Andrini, president of the Kane County Audubon Society, said the organization hosted 82 bird walks last year and noted there are hundreds of different species of birds in Kane County for watchers to find.

He said peak bird-watching times are usually during the spring and fall migrations.

Charles resident, said his national list includes 630 birds, and his Illinois list includes 350 birds.

He said he loves bird watching because it gets him outside.

And keeping track gives him goals to meet.

Picking a favorite bird is nearly impossible, he said, but he finds the black rail – a nocturnal bird that lives in wetlands – to be one of the more interesting species.

“There are so many beautiful, unique ones out there,” he said. “The black rail is so mysterious, unusual and cryptic.”

Liz Copeland of Montgomery has been bird watching for years, but she said she has a lot to learn.

“I’m at the tip of the iceberg,” she said. “... It’s like learning a foreign language.

They’re so complex and intricate. They’re fascinating creatures.”

Nelson said new bird watchers should pick up a good field guide to help identify birds.

She advises those new to bird watching to be patient, even if unique birds don’t surface right away.

Theresa LeCompte of Aurora said she got into bird watching about three years ago and started keeping track of all the birds she saw last year. She said she enjoys the camaraderie of spending time with other bird watchers and, of course, seeing birds.

“Birds are fascinating,” she said. “You see a bird you’ve never seen before and then you’re starting to see birds you never knew were there the whole time.”

Residents learn to live with celiac disease with diet changes

ay Montgomery consistently had felt uncomfortable after eating meals, but he didn’t think much about the bloated feeling he nearly always experienced.

Montgomery, who owns Goldmine Jewelers in St. Charles, said it wasn’t until he had a physical exam three years ago that he discovered his diet made him feel that way.

Specifically, it was the gluten to which he was allergic. He said he didn’t realize he was living with celiac disease and a variety of common foods, including bread and pasta, had been disagreeing with his stomach.

He felt better less than a week after cutting gluten out of his diet, and now it’s a way of life.

“I felt pretty good,” he said.

“I got my appetite back.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, celiac disease is a digestive condition caused by eating the protein in gluten, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and other foods that contain wheat, barley or rye. The disease can cause stomach aches, diarrhea and a decreased absorption of nutrients.

The Mayo Clinic says there is no cure for the disease, but it can be managed through diet. People with celiac disease are advised to avoid a long list of foods, including croutons, pastas, bread, processed lunch meats, cookies, beer, soup, salad dressings and sauces, including soy sauce.

That can make eating out complicated, Montgomery said. If he knows he’s heading to a restaurant, he said he usually brings his own gluten-free bun so he can order a hamburger.

The growing demand for gluten-free foods didn’t escape Allen and Christina Soboj, owners of the North Island Sandwich Shoppe in Batavia.

Allen Soboj said the popularity of gluten-free meals was highlighted a few weeks ago when a shipment of gluten-free bread didn’t come in one Saturday. He said about 10 customers walked out that day because that’s why they went there.

“There are people that specifically come here for that very reason,” he said, adding that his shop doesn’t charge extra for making a gluten-free sandwich, which he said is rare for a restaurant.

began dating his wife, Melissa Sharp, six years ago. He said gluten-free products have come a long way in that period of time, improving in quality and price.

He said in the past few years, the gluten-free market has exploded.

“Gluten-free in the supermarket industry is a very well-understood category,” he said. “It’s not even emerging anymore. It’s established and continuing to go up.”

Lencioni said the rising number of gluten-free customers is on the minds of food manufacturers. Some products that always have been gluten-free now are advertised as such to capture that demographic.

ing her diet led to drastic improvements in the way she feels. For years, she experienced stomach pain, headaches, bloating and gas – symptoms one of her friends with celiac disease also had experienced.

She said because celiac disease wasn’t as well-known as it is today, it took her a long time to determine that gluten had been the cause of her problems. In 2006, she started carefully checking food labels to avoid eating gluten, and it’s a lifestyle she maintains today.

“I could tell by the first day that I was better. Each day got progressively better,” Sharp said. “I felt really bad eating gluten and couldn’t bring myself to eat it.”

ST. CHARLES – Teen girls and women suffering from eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating can attend a free support group 6:45 to 8 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month beginning Jan. 14 at NOVO: Renewing Joy in Life, 104 S. 2nd Ave., St. Charles.

Village president, trustees contested Kaneville’s country, small-town identity a main platform for candidates

bschory@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Kaneville voters will have a contest for village president and trustee in the April 9 consolidated election because two candidates have filed for village president and four have filed for three trustee seats.

Pat Hill and interim Village President Rick Peck want to be the village’s next president.

Kaneville incorporated in 2006 to prevent it from being annexed or absorbed into other villages, such as Elburn or Sugar Grove, candidates said.

Kaneville Township was set-

tled in the 1830s, according to its website. Kaneville’s population, according to the 2010 census, is 484.

“I just want to make sure it stays Kaneville – the small quaint town that it is – and listen to the people,” Hill said. “I have been a trustee since incorporation. I want to serve as village president because I want to keep Kaneville, Kaneville.”

Peck also was a trustee who was appointed village president after Village President Bob Rodney died in July.

“I think serving right now, I’m able to see some opportunities where I fit well and can serve well,” Peck said.

“I’d like to continue that with some added responsibilities.”

Peck echoed Hill’s thoughts about maintaining Kaneville’s identity.

“Everybody prides our town on how rural it is; there is nobody who wants to change anything,” Peck said.

“The board is just about trying to better serve the community. There are things in town need done, we’ve got some really old sidewalks and we worked through some drainage replacements the last two years. It’s really just about serving the community.”

Incumbent trustees Jon Behm and Nicholas Garifa-

lis say they also want to see Kaneville maintain its rural identity.

“I want to be a trustee so that we have some input for how the village is going to be run for our children,” Behm said. “I want Kaneville to stay a small town, stay a country town.”

Garifalis serves on the Kaneville Planning and Development Commission and Zoning Board and said being a trustee is a continuation of that service. He was appointed as trustee to fill the vacancy caused by Peck becoming interim village president.

Newcomer Carl Hauser said he has been volunteer-

ing to maintain the village’s roads, filling potholes and patching. As a 10-year employee at the Kane County Department of Transportation, he has the experience to step up and support the village that way. Wanting to be a trustee is an extension of that, he said.

“I hope to help out and participate,” Hauser said.

Newcomer Eric Kroehner said he wants to serve and maintain Kaneville’s identity as a small country town.

“I want to be a trustee to ensure the public’s trust here in the community so Kaneville stays Kaneville,” Kroehner said.

Rivas has continued to be involved in the district, despite twice failing in bids to win election to the school board. He now volunteers on the district’s financial advisory committee and volunteers elsewhere within the district because his children attend Kaneland schools.

“I think education is just so important, and this is another way for me to get involved,” Rivas said.

Krauspe said she is seeking a third term on the board, and she intends for this to be her final term.

“Everyone else on the board has only about a year and a half under their belt, so I feel my experience could be valuable, as we work on a lot of different issues,” Krauspe said. “With Elmer [Gramley] and Ken [Carter] retiring from the board, it only strengthened my own feeling that I needed to run again.”

According to Illinois election law, write-in candidates still could mount a campaign.

But write-in candidates must notify the Kane County Clerk’s office no later than 61 days before the April 9 election of their intent to run as a write-in.

Should no one else seek election, Krauspe said she expects the Kaneland board likely would advertise the vacancy on the board and meet later in the spring to interview and appoint a board member from those who apply for the position.

The board most recently completed such an appointment process in 2010 when it selected Witt to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Robert Myers.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – As the Maple Park library gets ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary in June, the library is working to improve its service.

The library, located in the lower level of the Maple Park Community Center at 302 Willow St., implemented new hours in the fall.

“We are still open the same number of hours – 30 hours a week – but we rearranged them,” Maple Park Library Director Kimberly Martin said.

The library is closed Fridays, but is open earlier Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Hours are from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 3 to 8 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Before the change, the library didn’t open until 10 a.m.

Saturdays and 9:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Martin said the library changed its hours to better meet the needs of patrons.

“I think people like being able to come in earlier on Saturdays,” Martin said.

The library had been open from 3 to 5 p.m. Fridays but wasn’t seeing much business,

Besides new hours, the library in February will replace the flooring and add shelving in the adult reading room.

“It should be done by the end of March,” Martin said.

The improvements will lead up to Maple Park Library’s 50th anniversary in June. In June 1963, a group of residents interested in establishing a library met to form the Maple Park Library Association, according to the library’s website. The Maple Park Public Library District was established in 1998.

Maple Park Library is not the only library changing its hours. On Wednesday, the Sugar Grove Library will see its operating hours expand.

The Sugar Grove Library Board recently approved expanding the library’s hours after patrons were surveyed on what hours they would like to see.

MAPLE PARK – Pedro Rivas likes his chances of securing a seat on the Kaneland Community Unit School District 302 board.

As one of two candidates who filed nominating petitions to place his name on the ballot for the April 9 election, Rivas – who has run twice before for Kaneland school board – is virtually assured of securing one of the three open seats on the board.

“I’m going to get out there, and do what I need to do,” Rivas said.

“But obviously, my chances are good,” he added with a chuckle.

While other local races will feature an abundance of candidates for open seats on school boards and city councils, the Kaneland school board race almost has been devoid of contention.

When the nominating period ended Dec. 26, only Rivas, of Blackberry Township, and current school board President Cheryl Krauspe of Elburn had filed for candidacy.

Krauspe’s fellow incumbents, Ken Carter of Maple Park and Elmer Gramley of Kaneville Township opted not to seek re-election.

Krauspe said she was “disappointed” by the lack of interest from prospective candidates. She said some people had indicated to her that they were considering running.

Krauspe said she’d like to think that the lack of interest in serving on the board indicates that people in the district believe the school district is “headed in a positive direction.”

The lack of candidates in 2013 would be a far cry from the heat of the 2011 campaign, when seven candidates ran for four open seats.

But Krauspe also acknowledged other factors likely were at play. She said some with whom she spoke worried about whether they would have the time to dedicate to serving on the board.

And others were limited

by Illinois state law, which would effectively prohibit anyone from Sugar Grove Township from running for Kaneland board in 2013. According to that law, in districts such as Kaneland, where most residents live in cities but most of the district’s geography is rural, the board membership must be divided relatively equally among the townships that the district covers.

In practice, this means no more than three members of the board can come from any one of the seven townships.

And three current members of the board – Teresa Witt, Joe Oberweis and Tony Valente, none of whom are scheduled to seek re-election until 2015 – reside in Sugar Grove Township, blocking anyone from that township from seeking election.

Krauspe resides in Campton Township.

Candidates could have come from Campton, Blackberry, Virgil, or Kaneville townships, or the portions of DeKalb County within the Kaneland district.

Rivas said until the filing period ended, he was unaware that only he and Krauspe had filed to seek office.

Sugar Grove teen helps launch group that teaches essential life skills

alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Richard Williams was nearly 15 years old when he found out he had autism. That discovery changed his life.

Williams, a Sugar Grove resident, and his family had known of some issues for a long time. There was frustration when he couldn’t achieve certain tasks. His motor skills weren’t developed properly – for instance, it took him longer to learn to tie his shoes.

But instead of the autism news being something to dread, it was something to embrace, Williams said.

“Once I found out that I had autism, things got a lot easier,” he said. “I started overcoming a lot of my problems.”

Now 19 years old, Williams speaks clearly and confidently of doing what he can to help others in such situations. Long involved in Scouting, he and his father, Sean, helped launch the Aurora-based Venturing Crew 88 last year. It is for those with special needs. Richard Williams is the president of the group. Sean Williams is the crew adviser, and Duane Welte is the committee chairman.

Others in the group are Daniel Escamilla of St. Charles, Stewart Hansen of Montgomery and Andrew Krawczyk of Aurora. Krawczyk is the vice president. The group has existed since September, and members meet on the first two Tuesdays of each month at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora.

The group has been active in teaching essential life skills.

Group members have done a public transportation trip, in which they boarded a bus, then changed buses for a visit to a mall. They learned to buy transfers and explained to leaders where they were headed and how they were getting there.

Sean Williams said he found inspiration in the way his son reacted when he learned he had autism. Williams had just finished eighth grade at Aurora Christian, and he was to become a freshman at Kaneland High School. He had been diagnosed with attention deficit

hyperactivity disorder long before, but now he knew more.

“Richard said, ‘I don’t want a cure. Part of this autism is who I am, and I like who I am.

I wouldn’t change a thing,’ ” Sean Williams said.

According to www.autismspeaks.org, autism spectrum disorder and autism are general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. The disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.

Richard Williams said his goal is to live as independently as possible, but there is much to overcome. For instance, he said he doesn’t drive because he is fearful that something could go wrong that could put others in danger. But he said that his goals wouldn’t be the

same as others who have autism. Each person is different, so he stressed that people shouldn’t make assumptions about autism based on knowing one person who has the disorder.

“That just means you know one person with autism,” he said. “Each person is different in what they experience.

Some senses can be dialed up, and some senses can be dialed down.”

He is attending classes at Aurora University, and he said he is considering going into the special-needs field. Sean Williams said there are not enough opportunities for those who have autism, especially once they are out of school. One of the Scouting group’s aims is to develop skills that are essential, but more can be done.

That Williams would aspire to help others succeed is not

surprising to John Markovich, who is the school psychologist at Kaneland High School.

He worked with Williams at Kaneland, and he said the student displayed leadership qualities. For instance, he said Williams’ Eagle Scout project involved team-building stations. And he said the fact that Williams is so open about autism is a plus.

“He just came out and talked about his story. ... It’s not typical to see a kid, on the autism spectrum, be confident enough to tell their story,” Markovich said.

Born: Oct. 23, 1932; in Milwaukee Died: Dec. 29, 2012; in St. Charles BATAVIA – Dud Wasser, born Paul Dudley Wasser, 80, of Batavia, passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles after battling pancreatic cancer. Affectionately known as “The King” to his children, he will be deeply missed by his family.

Dud was born Oct. 23, 1932 in Milwaukee. He moved to Batavia with his parents as a young boy.

He was a 1950 graduate of Batavia High School and a longtime employee of Rachielles’ Pharmacy, also in Batavia. He also worked at the family-owned business, Batavia Soil Builders on Nelson Lake Road, during his high school years, until the business was sold in the mid 1970s.

After high school, Dud attended Purdue University and Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Later, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps Recon, while stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Hawaii. In 2008, Dud retired from Carlson Hardware in Wheaton.

Dud’s passions included a love

of flying small airplanes, photography, reading, fishing in Wisconsin and Canada with family and friends, hunting and sports. He coached and umpired Little League and high school baseball games for many years, and he was an avid Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan.

He will be remembered by his family for his sense of humor, and for establishing the family traditions of taking yearly vacations, attending Cubs games together, tobogganing in the winters, and playing cards, including weekly poker games.

Dud leaves behind his brother Fred Wasser of Rhinelander, Wis.; his three children, Pamela Wasser Muse (Dan) of Memphis, Tenn., Patricia Wasser Brock of Batavia, and Paul G. Wasser of Batavia.

He also is survived by his five grandchildren, Kelly Swayne of North Aurora, Steven Brock of Sammamish, Wash., Christopher Brock of Renton, Wash., Tina Wasser Drakeford of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jason Wasser of Sterling; and his great-grandson, Caidoc Brock of Renton, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVona and Paul A. Wasser of Batavia.

FLATWOODS, Ky. – Roger F. Coleman, 61, of Flatwoods, Ky., and formerly of St. Charles, passed away Dec. 31, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Coleman was born Feb. 5, 1951, in LaSalle, a son of Phyllis Landers Coleman and the late Ronald W. Coleman. He also was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Pete and Florence Coleman; maternal grandparents, William and Elizabeth Landers; and his brother-in law, John Picco.

Mr. Coleman graduated from LaSalle Peru High School, Class of 1969, and attended Illinois Valley Community College and Southern Illinois University. Roger Coleman started his career in ad sales at the News Tribune in LaSalle and moved to the Tampa Tribune in Tampa, Fla. He then moved to St. Charles and spent 20 years at the Kane County Chronicle, becoming the publisher.

In 2002, he became publisher of The Independent in Ashland, Ky. He was the president of Conley Media in Wisconsin and then became publisher of the Hudson-Catskill Newspaper in Hudson, N.Y. He always believed in being active in his families’ lives and his profession. Most recently he was past president of the New York Press Association.

Mr. Coleman was a devout Catholic. He helped develop his family’s strong ties to the St. John Neuman Catholic Church in St. Charles. He attended and was committed to the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland since moving to the area.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of over 37 years, Christie Stevenson

New businesses open in Sugar Grove

nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Several new businesses – including a restaurant and a tanning salon – have opened or soon will open in Sugar Grove.

Shari Baum, executive director of the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce, said Monday that the Irish pub Runway to Galway had been scheduled to open at the end of December on Route 30.

Baum said Chamber of Commerce leaders are encouraged by all the new business activity.

“Of course the Chamber of Commerce is very excited to see new businesses in Sugar Grove,” she said. “It benefits

both the business community and residents. We always encourage residents to shop local.”

Village President Sean Michels said 2012 was a good year for the village’s business community. He said after many years of showing interest, Jimmy John’s finally settled in Sugar Grove in the spring.

“It sounds like 2013 is going to be a good year, as well,” he said.

He said he hopes to draw in more businesses by completing the interchange at Interstate 88 and Route 47.

A climate-change experiment in California THE WASHINGTON POST Starting this year, California will begin the nation’s most ambitious experiment yet in fighting climate change, and it will do it more or less alone. For environmentalists depressed by years of the United States’ unproductive “debate” on global warming, this moment is heady – and perilous.

Beginning in 2013, the nation’s largest state, the ninth-largest economy in the world, will put a price on the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming. California has established a cap-and-trade program, a design similar to what Congress considered but failed to pass in 2010.

Perhaps the Golden State in the new year will prove once and for all that markets can and should be marshaled in the fight against global warming.

Pricing carbon emissions is undoubtedly the right concept. Califor-

nia’s cap-and-trade mechanism is supposed to minimize costs by establishing a statewide limit on total emissions and a market where businesses can buy the right to pollute a certain amount under that cap. When firms and their consumers must pay for their emissions, they find the cheapest ways to pollute less.

But California’s experiment might not work well enough to persuade others to follow along. The most obvious problem with the plan is that it relies far too little on the market-based capand-trade system and far too much on other, expensive, command-and-control regulations. State officials expect to achieve only about 23 percent of their planned emissions reductions through 2020 with carbon pricing, and it’s not clear what happens after that. The cost of the whole package, then, is likely to be higher than necessary.

from the fact that California is acting alone. As with any market, the bigger a carbon market is, the more efficient it is. But the group of Western states that were going to join California in creating a linked carbon market have not followed through. That not only reduces the size of the market California is creating, but it also could dull its effectiveness.

Affected companies could move out of state and pollute just as much as they would have before California imposed its program. Out-of-state electricity generators, meanwhile, might try to reshuffle where they send their product – cleaner stuff to California, dirtier stuff elsewhere – instead of lowering their total emissions. Ironically, these issues, called carbon “leakage,” might make their own solution – a national carbon price – less attractive.

California’s plan – cap-and-trade and other elements – also faces legal

challenges, since its requirements affect interstate commerce, a policy domain the Constitution reserves for the federal government.

Opponents claim that California is attempting to regulate businesses in other states and even to discriminate against out-of-state products. State officials express confidence that they will win the legal argument, but that, too, is not assured.

In its final preparations for Tuesday’s launch, California held an auction for 2013 carbon pollution rights this month. The rights sold at only a few cents above their legally mandated minimum price.

Simply establishing a carbon price is a very large step; from here, policymakers can streamline the policy and attract other states into finally linking up with California. Perhaps – if it survives the courts, and the court of public opinion.

Making her point

Shift from post to point guard nearly seamless for Santos

ENEVA – Joe Santos strongly encouraged his daughters to devote time to dribbling apart from their usual childhood basketball practices. It didn’t matter that neither was built like a ballhandler.

“You never know,” smiled Geneva junior Sidney Santos, recently remembering her father’s rationale.

Yup, you never do.

Initially pegged as a post player entering the season, the 6-foot Santos has found truth in her dad’s words while starting at point guard for the past month. She’ll score from the paint when she can, but largely has been effective from the outside and as, ahem, a distributor.

“I was really nervous at first, but the most important thing is just being confident and trying to keep your head,” Santos said. “I mean, there are still games where it’s frustrating, where I wish I didn’t have that turnover or had made that pass, but it’s still coming along.”

Blessed with dynamic guard play that steered it toward plenty of postseason success in past winters, Geneva anticipated a shift toward a more post-heavy existence in 2012-13.

Reigning Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year Sami Pawlak, another 6-footer, returned to the lineup along with 5-foot-10 sophomore Abby Novak.

Add Sidney Santos – the younger sister of former Viking and Marquette freshman Ashley – to the fold after a series of ACL injuries to start her high school career, and Geneva understandably was thinking big.

When speedy point guard Michaela Loebel suffered an ACL tear in late November, however, the Vikings again were sent scrambling. The team scaled back its traditional 1-2-2 full-court diamond press out of concern for matchup problems.

At some point, coach Sarah Meadows knew she’d have to play her posts out of position. As a result, Novak often defends the opposing point guard while Santos calls names of plays as she brings the ball upcourt.

A night after St. Charles East downed the Vikings in overtime, Meadows inserted Santos into the lineup at point guard for a blowout victory against Elgin, citing her overall versatility and experience as a small forward during AAU ball. Santos honed her outside shot

“Sid handles the ball and sees the court great. We just made that switch,” Meadows said. “We didn’t really ask her to be the [point guard] until after that point, and she was ready for it. She wants to do whatever’s best for the team, and that’s the kind of kid she is.”

Flanking Santos after a recent practice, Novak told her teammate, “You look so confident with the ball. Yes, you

do.”

Novak and Pawlak also have offered support from ball pressure when Santos requires it.

“Each game, it’s slowly getting easier,” Santos said. “When teams press us, I know I have these two. I pass it to [Pawlak] at half court and Abby just flies in for a layup, so it’s not just all on me. I have my whole team helping me bring

Bears’ McCaskey praises Lovie Smith

tmusick@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – Bears chairman George McCaskey has had hundreds, if not thousands, of conversations with longtime coach Lovie Smith.

This week’s chat proved to be the toughest.

“I think it was an emotional situation,” McCaskey said Tuesday at Halas Hall. “I know I was struggling to keep my emotions in check.”

The pair spoke Monday after Smith learned that he was fired after nine seasons with the team. Bears general manager Phil Emery made the decision with the consent of McCaskey and team president Ted Phillips.

Smith earned the respect of the McCaskey family during his tenure, which included three division titles and an appearance in Super Bowl XLI. But after missing the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons, McCaskey agreed that a change Lovie Smith was needed.

“It was very difficult,” McCaskey said. “Our family has high regard for Lovie. I think [Jay Cutler] said it best: He’s been high-character all the way through. He’s represented the Bears very well.

“He’s a good coach, an outstanding man. I think one of

the things we’re most grateful to Lovie for is he didn’t just teach our players football, he taught them how to become men.”

That said, McCaskey understood why Smith’s dismissal angered many players.

“It’s perfectly understandable,” McCaskey said. “He’s a great guy and a great coach, and I thought it was encouraging to see how the players were sticking up for him.”

No big deal: Devin Hester proved to be the most vocal with his anger, criticizing reporters and “false fans” and contemplating retirement after the Bears fired Smith.

Emery took the high road regarding Hester’s comments.

“Devin came in as a draft pick with Lovie,” Emery said.

“I certainly understand the emotion. There will be a time where his emotions clear.

And Devin has come to my office. We’ve talked before.

My door is always open, and if he wants to do that, we can have the conversation. If he doesn’t, I’m open to that, too.

“Obviously, Devin’s under contract, so if he sent his retirement papers in, I would know. But I don’t anticipate that. I think he’s a great competitor, I think that was an emotional situation that evoked an emotional response, and I certainly understand that.”

Tight lipped: Emery cannot publicly discuss coaches on

other teams that he is pursuing – say, for example, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. So, Emery smiled when asked what he liked about the Denver Broncos’ offense in general.

“Nice question,” Emery said with a laugh. “Jump right into it. It’s a good leading question. I like all the NFL teams. They all have very unique ways to make the most out of the personnel that they have.”

And the Broncos?

“Peyton Manning looks great,” Emery said with a grin, holding his ground.

“Good to have him back in the NFL after being away for a year.”

“To me, I have the best job in the world,” Emery said. “Not the country. In the world.”

Sometimes, general managers can be likeable but bumbling. Emery’s predecessor, Jerry Angelo, was that way during much of his 11year tenure with the Bears.

Other times, they can be laser sharp but grumpy. Ken Williams of the White Sox, anyone?

In a revealing questionand-answer session Monday, Emery proved to possess the best combination of traits for Bears fans. His football knowledge is off the charts, and he is happy to share some of his insights as long as it doesn’t jeopardize the Bears’ coaching search.

But don’t confuse friendli-

ness for softness.

As this week has proved, Emery is willing to make tough decisions in the name of winning a Super Bowl.

Most teams would embrace a 10-win season. Emery fired his coach after one.

Players and coaches also should brace for honest assessments from their GM. Emery offered an unflinching criticism of erratic tight end Kellen Davis – “Kellen had a rough year” – and said he was disappointed with how the Bears’ coaches failed to use Matt Forte more in the receiving game – “I’m going to be frank: Matt was brought back, and I was excited about his signing, because a big part of that is him as a pass receiver.”

Although he is social, Emery prefers to do his work behind the scenes. When he’s not out scouting, he works from a second-floor office at Halas Hall that is off-limits to reporters.

Even his players don’t know much about him or his day-to-day dealings.

Fourth-year nickelback D.J. Moore said Emery did not meet with players to ex-

plain his decision to fire their popular coach.

“Not that I know of,” Moore said with a shrug. “He might have pulled a couple of superstars off to the side, but he didn’t talk to the team while I was in there.”

Moore was not alone.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler described his interactions with Emery as if he were talking about a reclusive neighbor who lives at the end of the block.

“Here and there. Limited,” Cutler said. “Phil keeps to himself. You know he has a plan. He’s on the road a lot.

He’s doing a lot of scouting.

He’s a grinder.

“That’s kind of what got

him this far. Once you’re around him even just a little bit, he exudes confidence.

You know he’s going to make the right decisions.”

Maybe that’s why Emery likes statistics so much. They remove emotion from the equation when he has to release a player or tell a coach that he no longer is needed.

Ultimately, the only people within the organization to whom Emery must answer are chairman George McCaskey and team president Ted Phillips. They listened when Emery came to them and explained why he wanted to replace Smith after nine

Almost 15 minutes had passed since the end of Phil Emery’s 53-minute news conference, and the Bears general manager casually was holding court with a few reporters.

Emery was explaining that Bears rookie defensive end Shea McClellin and New England Patriots rookie defensive end Chandler Jones graded out almost identically as pass rushers this season, even though McClellin had 2½ sacks and Jones had six.

Off the top of his head, Emery reeled off something called a disruption rate.

McClellin’s was 3.97.

Jones’ was 4.10.

“I mean, the difference is only 0.13,” Emery said with a chuckle as he waited for a reaction.

I smiled and nodded. I had no idea what he was talking about.

I do know that Emery is the right person to hire the Bears’ next head coach.

Fans of Northern Illinois University football crowded watering holes including Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, and O’Leary’s Restaurant and Bar, 260 E. Lincoln Highway, eager to see their beloved Huskies compete on the big stage Tuesday against Florida State at the Orange Bowl.

And when it came to showing their feelings, they were anything but shy. They cheered at what they liked and booed at what they didn’t.

Dina Sweet, a DeKalb resident and NIU alumna, watched the game at Fatty’s with two of her friends to support her university and her cousin, who was at the game in Miami. Sweet was hoping for a Huskies victory Tuesday.

“The underdogs should always win,” Sweet said.

Fatty’s was packed with people, including NIU alumni Ryan Markowski and Nick Clauss, who arrived at Fatty’s at 12:30 p.m. Markowski and Clauss drove to Fatty’s from Belvidere and Chicago, respectively.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime game,” Markowski said.

“Hopefully it’s not a blowout.

Hopefully they win ... It’s exciting to see them on the national stage.”

Had they been NIU students, Markoeski and Clauss could have traveled to Miami via a student fan bus package, which took 1,300 NIU students to the Orange Bowl for a multinight stay at a cost of $150.

Excitement for the game had been building for weeks in DeKalb. A number of lo-

cal businesses posted signs cheering on NIU, while others offered Orange Bowl-related food and drink specials.

The enthusiasm also was

building online. On Facebook, many NIU students and alumni posted messages showing their support and excitement.

On Twitter, accounts operated by the university would tweet and retweet their own and others’ messages of support.

Regardless of the outcome, fans such as Sweet and Angi Bergstrand said they were proud of the team because of all they had accomplished this season.

“They have nothing to be ashamed of if they lose,” said Bergstrand, an NIU alumna and employee in the university’s Housing and Dining department. “At the start of the season, who would have thought they would have gotten here?”

Caterers predict cupcake bars, empanadas for 2013 At the end of each year, I receive a lot of news releases proclaiming the new food trends for the coming year.

I’ve learned that breakfast foods will become more popular in 2013, hard cider will pop up on more bar menus, sweet wines are on the rise and bacon – for at least another year – will continue to be the darling of the food world.

These predictions are usually based on information from chefs and industry researchers.

One segment of the food industry that I rarely hear about is catering. So when I received a missive from Chicago-based Catersource Magazine, which caters to caterers, I wondered what was in store this year for those specialists.

Food catering in the U.S. – a large, fractured industry with many players – generates $6 billion annually. Because most caterers are located within a 60-minute drive from their event destination, the industry has tens of thousands of members, each with a small share of the market. Some do catering exclusively, while others – restaurants, hotels and even grocery stores – cater on the side.

Catersource surveyed more than 300 independent caterers around the country and came up with the following trends for 2013.

VIEWS Kathryn Rem • Popcorn bars. Elaborately spiced and flavored popcorn – festive and inexpensive – was showing up at events last year and is expected to continue.

• Tacos, dumplings and fillings. Caterers are melding global flavors with street-food innovation. Call them gyoza, pierogi, empanadas, knodel or momo, fillings wrapped in dough signify the best of the world in a doughy package.

• Gray decor. In addition to emerald, the Pantone color of the year, gray is making a comeback for events, with sleek modern materials like metal and acrylic slowly moving in on burlap and vintage decor.

• Wedding desserts. Cupcakes at weddings were hot in 2012. Now look for soft-serve stations, ice-your-own-cupcake bars and more options for creative flavor combinations and personalization.

• Bizarre and extreme.

Goat may not be the protein of choice at a wedding, but events devoted to menu items you might see on the Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods” can make a big splash with guests and are fun for chefs.

The Beer Nut: The best new beers of the year By nOrMAn Miller

GateHouse News Service It’s that time of year again when I take a look back at 2012 and all of the new beers I’ve tried and tell you my picks for the best.

It’s not easy. I drink a lot of good beers, and like in past years, there were some fabulous beers brewed.

To make the list, there were some simple rules: the beer can’t be a brewery-only release, and it had to be released in more than one location.

Without further adieu, here are the Beer Nut’s top 10 beers of 2012.

1. Boulevard Brewing Company’s love Child no. 2

When I recommend a beer, I always take price into consideration. And even though Love Child No. 2 costs more than $20 a bottle, I recommended this to every person I know who likes good beer.

This 9.6 percent alcohol by volume wild ale was a work of brewing art. The sourness is balanced nicely with some cherry-like flavors, as well as vanilla from the oak barrels it is aged in. The funky flavors are amazing. Let’s all hope Boulevard brews a new batch in 2013 and beyond.

2. Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack

Black India pale ales were a style I was getting bored with in 2012. They were often good beers, but there was a sameness to them. Then came Wookey Jack, and it blew every other black IPA out of the fridge. Firestone Walker’s version uses rye, which gives a nice spicy compliment to the abundance of citrusy hops. The roasted

flavors. It is easy to brew a very bitter beer, but what sets this apart from almost any other IPA is the perfect balance this beer exhibits. I couldn’t get enough of this beer.

malts that are used to produce the black color gives this beer more balance than many 8.3 percent ABV IPAs, either regular or black. An absolute treat.

3. Wormtown Brewery’s norm

8. Full Sail Brewing’s Phil’s existential Alt

Yes, this beer was named after me, but no, this is not self-promotion.

Norm earned its spot on the list. Norm is a coconutchocolate oatmeal stout. It uses a pound of coconut per gallon of liquid. It tastes like a liquid Mounds bar, but it is not too sweet that you can’t enjoy more than one glass. This is a pictureperfect dessert beer.

I’m a sucker for a good alt.

The problem is there aren’t many available. Full Sail’s version is spot on for the style. Caramel malts gives it a pleasant sweetness, and the light floral hops gives this beer a nice dryness at the end. Definitely worth seeking out.

9. Brouwerij Van Steenberge’s Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple

4. Jack’s Abby Brewing’s Fire in the Ham

Framingham’s Jack’s Abby Brewing has carved a niche out for themselves by brewing nothing but lagers in an ale-dominated craft beer market. This is their interpretation of a German smoked beer, and it came out fantastic. If you like bacon, or smoked ham, this is the beer for you.

The smokiness is reminiscent of smoked pork.

A beer for meat lovers, but fine for vegetarians because no meat is actually used.

5. Stone Brewing Company’s enjoy By iPA

Hoppy beers are meant to be enjoyed fresh. Stone, to ensure that people drank their new IPA as fresh as possible, put the date the beer should be imbibed by. They released it to limited markets at a time, and when the date was hit, the beer was to be pulled off the shelf. Stone shouldn’t have worried; the Enjoy By IPA is a phenomenal imperial IPA, full of hoppy goodness. This beer flew off the shelves

6. Sixpoint resin

This imperial IPA is completely different than the Enjoy By IPA. While that IPA is more of citrusy hops, the Sixpoint Resin is grassy/piney hops. The Resin is brewed with a hop resin extract, and it gives the beer a big bitter punch with the first sip, but it is quickly balanced by a sweetness from the malts that keeps all of that bitterness in check. At 9.5 percent ABV, this is a big beer with big flavor.

7. Pretty Things’ Beer & Ale Project’s Meadowlark iPA

A third IPA in a row, but again, completely different than the others, but just as good. The Meadowlark is a little more earthy than the others, with floral flavors and even a little biscuit/malt

This is the lone imported beer on the list. It’s not that I avoid imported beers, but this year seemed particularly American-centric for me. But this was an exception. The Gulden Draak 9000 comes in at a style appropriate 10.5 percent ABV. There are a lot of spicy flavors in this – cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and even a hint of pepper. It has a little heat from the booze, but it is not a detraction at all.

10. Smuttynose Brewing Company’s Durty

This is the newest beer on the list. I just tried it last week. It is an American brown ale/IPA hybrid.

Whatever you want to call it, the hoppy flavors from the IPA and the malts from the brown ale part really work well together to make a satisfying beer. I was halfway done with the bottle when I declared it the best beer Smuttynose has ever brewed and I stick by that.

Medication for atrial fibrillation decreases risk of stroke Dear Doctor K: I have atrial fibrillation. It doesn’t bother me, but I still have to take medications because the condition apparently increases my risk of stroke. How does it do that?

Dear Reader: Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that causes a rapid and irregular heartbeat.

The atria are the upper two chambers of the heart; they receive blood from the rest of the body. The atria pump blood into the lower two chambers of the heart (the ventricles). Then the ventricles pump blood to the rest of the body. During atrial fibrillation, the atria do not beat normally. Instead, they quiver or “fibrillate.”

Normally, electrical impulses from a small part of the atrium cause the atria to beat. The electrical signal then travels down to the ventricles and causes them to beat. The atria pump, filling the ventricles with blood, and then the ventricles pump. It is coordinated so that the heart pumps blood efficiently.

In contrast, during atrial fibrillation, the electrical impulses come from all over the atria.

Instead of pumping efficiently,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the atria just quiver. There is an irregular and rapid heartbeat, and no coordination between the atria and the ventricles. That means that the ventricles may pump when they don’t have a lot of blood in them.

Most important, in terms of your question, the atria do not pump all of their blood into the ventricles. They’re very inefficient. As a result, blood pools inside the left atrium. When blood isn’t moving, it tends to form clots. Those clots can break free and travel out of the heart.

That’s when the trouble begins.

As a clot travels in the blood, it moves through progressively narrower blood vessels. Finally, the clot reaches a blood vessel that’s so narrow it gets stuck. When it’s stuck, none of the blood behind it can get past the obstruction.

As a result, some tissue will be deprived of its blood supply.

Some organs are big enough that it doesn’t matter much if the blood supply to a small part of the

organ is stopped. But when the clot gets stuck in an artery to the brain, it can obstruct blood flow and cause a stroke. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

That’s why you are most likely taking blood-thinning medications. Most people with atrial fibrillation should be. These drugs prevent blood clots, thereby reducing the risk of a stroke and other serious complications.

Atrial fibrillation is linked to stroke also through atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in blood vessel walls. Atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries is one cause of atrial fibrillation, and atherosclerosis of the arteries of the brain can cause strokes.

The saddest thing for me to witness as a doctor is a patient who has chosen not to take the medicine he or she has been prescribed and pays a price. Unfortunately, I’ve had several patients who had strokes – unnecessarily. It breaks my heart.

Opinion on women joining men’s teams outdated, sexist Dr. Wallace: I’ve been reading your column for quite some time, I usually agree with you, but your opinion that girls should not participate on boys’ athletic teams – even if the girl has better athletic skills – is outdated and very sexist.

I’m sure a lot of girls wanted to play football on the boys’ team because girls don’t have tackle football teams to play on.

I hope you have changed your mind by now and agree that the best athletes should represent their schools, regardless of their sex. If you agree, your influence would go far to correct this injustice. – Donerella, Gary, Ind. Dear Donerella: I will change my mind when I become convinced I was wrong, but that hasn’t happened yet on this particular issue. I’m still “old school” on this matter.

I remain of the opinion that girls should not play on boys’ athletic teams, even if the girl is a superior athlete, nor should boys be permitted to play on girls’ teams.

If the best athletes, regardless of sex, were allowed to participate on all school athletic teams, the number of girls participating would drop dramatically. When it comes to team sports, boys dominate because they are, for the most part, bigger, stronger and faster. This would give them a great advantage when participating against girls.

As a former varsity head basketball coach, I love to watch high school students participate in athletics. I especially enjoy watching girls’ basketball teams participate, and I am

If the high school girls’ basketball had a game scheduled against the boys’ basketball team, I might not be able to predict the winner.

An added bonus was that pet owners tended to live longer than those who did not have pets.

Having thought about that for a while, I deemed it to be correct, not a joke. In this tough example deal, West was defending against three spades. He led the heart ace and continued with the heart king, East playing high-low to indicate a doubleton. What did West do next?

North’s second-round pass indicated a minimum opening bid (and, if your partnership uses support doubles, denied three spades). Then, when South jump-rebid three spades, inviting game with at least a six-card suit, North was tempted to raise.

But those three low hearts rang a warning bell. West wondered from where five winners would come. He could see three in hearts and one in spades, but where was the fifth?

There were 28 high-card points between his hand and the dummy. South had indicated 10 or 11 with his game-invitational rebid.

So, East could not have much.

And since East was marked with at most one trump, there was no point in West’s shifting to his singleton club, hoping to win the next trick with his spade ace, give his partner a heart ruff, and receive a club ruff in return.

Instead, West cashed his third heart trick (East carefully discarding the club two) and continued with the heart seven. When East ruffed with the spade eight, it effected an uppercut, promoting a second trump trick for West.
