HOW ARE WE DOING?

We want to hear from you. Email us your thoughts at feedback@shawmedia.com.

MORRISON – The second American Red Cross Community Blood Drive of 2025 took place on Thursday, March 20, at Morrison’s United Methodist Church.

The sponsor for the canteen that day was Bethesda Lutheran Church. They have sponsored the March drives for the past several years.

We are very appreciative to the ladies who buy groceries, bake cookies and bars and prepare sandwiches for the donors, volunteers and ARC staff. They are Nancy Usterbowski, Carol Oncken, Monica Anderson, Andrea Dalton, Dee Janssen and Deloris Smith. Thank you for your yummy kitchen skills!

Appreciation to the United Methodist Church for allowing us to have the March drive in the Heritage Hall (the Knights of Columbus had three fish fry dinners at St. Mary’s this month and they asked me to move the March blood drive location). We are grateful for UMC’s flexibility and for Carole Patton!

The May blood drive will be back at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Acknowledgement to our two dependable certified ARC volunteers, Pat Pendgraft and Irma Russell. These wonderful ladies not only check everyone in at the registration table, but they also make appointments for the donors for the next blood drive and assist me with anything that needs to be done throughout the room. Appreciation to my faithful post-donation escorts, Rick Barr, Pat Popkin and Carole Patton. These faithful friends assisted the donors walking from the donation lounger over to the canteen and served the donors their sandwiches and drinks.

We had 51 generous donors come through our doors to help save lives that day. The terrific whole blood donors (helping save up to three lives) were Deb Adolph, Julie Damhoff, Barb Imel, Du Wayne Ottens, Pam Shank, Lyle Bush, Bill Kuehl, Beth Wroble, Toni Decker, Kayla DeKeyrel, Randy Kuehl, Bryan Vogel, Philip Olt IV, Penny Milnes, Joan Vander Bleek, Renee Vanderlaan, Sheila Sonberg, Ron Pilgrim, Lorna Temple, Tim Messina, Larry Tichler, Chris Hawkins, Nancy Shank, Karl Kovarik, Connie Tegeler, Harvey Tegeler, Kaywyn Beswick, Michelle Vinson, Kari Forster, Amy Oudekerk, Carolyn Aiken, Brad Bielema, Joe R. Bielema, Susan Gomez, Jon Kophamer, Kelly Smith, Tim West, DJ Fulton, and four people (three men and one woman) who did not want their

names published as donors.

First-time donors with ARC were Taylor Whiles and another woman who did not want her name published as a donor. We are thankful for the longtime donors who recruit new people to give blood.

The amazing Double-Red-Cell/Power Red donors who give an equivalent of two units and donate only three times a year were Tom Demay, Larry Oudekerk, Ron Shank, Karl Kovarik, Keith Wiersema, Dwaine Schroeder and one gentleman who did not want his name published as a donor.

The ARC goal for “good units” was 61. We obtained only 53 units, which is only 86.8% efficiency. It is not unusual for us to not reach goal at the January and March blood drives. We have several donors who are “snowbirds” who travel to warmer destinations during the winter months. Plus, there has been a lot of sickness in the past several weeks that has caused people to cancel their appointments (the ARC does not want anyone to donate blood when ill; the recipient can get whatever the donors is fighting off, including cancer). This is why the ARC asks that anyone who has cancer avoids donating until they have been released from their physician at least 12 months/ one year.

Other statistics from the drive were 35 people using RapidPass, which is 68.63% (and that’s great)! There were only four deferrals, which is 7.8%, and that is just about what ARC expects. Only eight cancellations and three “no shows,” which is not too bad for winter.

Canceling before the drive begins is better than not showing up because a “walk-in” can jump into a canceled appointment slot and donate. If it is a “no show,” that time slot is “taken” and not available to a walk-in. Only one unit was

labeled “QNS” (quantity not sufficient; either the blood clotted off or the vein was leaking), and that is a good stat.

Unfortunately, two of our double red cells donors were asked to give only one whole blood unit instead; only two DRC machines were sent to this drive (we usually have three available, one was probably out of commission for annual maintenance), so it seemed to take longer than usual for the donors to be done. Time must have gotten away from the staff and the last two Power Red donors could not give two units each, but only one unit each.

Hopefully, we will have three machines at all of our future drives to alleviate this issue. Apologies to consistent, regular donors who ended up “not being eligible to donate” because of “being one or two days too early.” This always happens when there is a leap day. I just tell the people who donate all the time that they need to plan on skipping one drive per year. I usually skip the July drive.

Also, as an FYI, the last two times that I have donated blood I have felt awful later after getting home and lasting into the next day. I am pretty sure that this occurred because I did not drink the extra water both days that I had donated so I was dehydrated.

My symptoms were that of dehydration/hypovolemia. I always preach to donors to make sure that you drink enough extra water, at least 16 ounces above your usual water intake. I have been in the habit, for several years now, of drinking at least 100 ounces of water per day (recommended by my fitness instructor; you should drink twice the amount of your body weight to be clinically sufficiently hydrate to maintain optimal health, so a 150-pound person should drink 75 ounces of water daily, a 200-pound person should drink 100 ounces of water daily, etc.). I’ll get off my soapbox now.

The next ARC Morrison Community Blood Drive will be from noon to 5:45 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at St. Mary’s Church on Garden Plain Road.

You can make an appointment online at www.giveblood.org or contact me by Facebook Messenger, text or call me at 815-718-5117.

The sponsor will be Crossroads Community Church Ladies. Bring a spouse, neighbor, friend, coworker or anyone you find that day that is willing and able.

Have a wonderful spring and a blessed Lent and Easter.

Stay safe, everyone.

Sheriff grateful to voters after sales tax to fund emergency dispatch services approved

STERLING – Whiteside County‘s sheriff said he is grateful to voters after a countywide sales tax to help fund emergency dispatch services was approved during Tuesday’s consolidated election.

The Whiteside County public safety tax referendum passed with 3,667 votes for the measure and 2,907 against it. A total of 6,822 of the county’s 37,881 voters (18%) cast their ballots to decide the referendum’s fate. The measure had failed in two previous elections, most recently in November.

“I am truly grateful for the support of the community,” Booker said in a news release. “This vote reflects the deep care our residents have for the

safety and security of their families, neighborhoods and the entire county. With the approval of this tax, we can continue to provide the level of public safety and law enforcement services that Whiteside County deserves.”

The 0.5% sales tax adds an additional 50 cents for every $100 that shoppers spend on general merchandise in Whiteside County. The tax would not apply to groceries or items that must be titled or registered by a state agency, including watercraft, aircraft, trailers, mobile homes, qualifying drugs (including over-the-counter medications and

vitamins) and medical appliances.

Amy Robbins, the county administrator for Whiteside County, has said dispatch services cost $1.8 million annually to operate. Outside of radio surcharges, the county and the cities of Sterling and Rock Falls foot the bill, with a deficit of about $500,000 each year. Now, that money can remain in those cities’ general funds for other uses.

“It’d be nice to see some of that money go toward public works equipment or the roads,” newly elected Sterling Alderman Allen Przysucha told Shaw Local. “Another big priority is supporting our police and fire departments. I want both departments to have the equipment they need to keep us safe.”

The tax is estimated to raise an annual $2 million that only can be used

for matters of public safety. Any funds left over would be used to buy equipment and radio and software upgrades while allowing for multiagency interaction.

The new public safety tax also will help to fund the county’s new unified 911 call center in Morrison. Last September, the Twin Cities Communications Center in Sterling closed and the dozen dispatchers who worked there joined eight co-workers in the Whiteside County Law Enforcement Center in Morrison.

“The creation of one central 911 center is a game-changer for Whiteside County,” Booker said in the release. “It will streamline emergency response efforts and allow us to better coordinate services, improving outcomes for everyone in our community.”

Voter turnout slightly higher than normal in Lee, Whiteside

DIXON – Lee and Whiteside counties had a slightly higher voter turnout for Tuesday’s election compared with previous consolidated elections.

Total voter turnout was 16.77% of the 22,248 registered voters in Lee County and 18.01% of 37,881 in Whiteside. Lee County had a total of 3,730 ballots cast and Whiteside had 6,822, according to unofficial election results Wednesday afternoon.

In Lee County, voter turnout is usually about 14% for consolidated elections, so “it’s a pretty good turnout,” Lee County Clerk and Recorder Nancy Petersen said in an interview with Shaw Local. “I think we were a little bit busier than we usually are, but everything went extremely well.”

For Whiteside County, voter turnout was less than 13% in 2023 and about 14% in 2021, so “we’re a little bit better than it’s been the last couple of consolidated elections,” Whiteside County Clerk Karen Stralow said in an interview with Shaw Local.

Petersen and Stralow said they were

both down election judges. In Lee County, Petersen estimated they were about 30 short.

“We’re always still looking for those,” Petersen said.

“With the size of the election, they were able to handle the voters,” Stralow said.

Looking at the increased number of voters, Petersen said, “there was quite a

few contested races, so that usually helps the turnout.”

In Lee County, the precinct with the highest turnout was Ashton 2 at 40.26% of 308 registered voters. Close behind was Ashton 1 at 39.73% of 448 voters, according to the unofficial results.

Ashton had contested races for village president and trustee. In the race for village president, Tim Henert was

elected with 150 votes against challenger John Martinez’s 113 votes, according to the unofficial results.

The four elected trustees were Terry Greenfield with 210 votes, Mark Maurer with 207, Dan Hillison with 187 and Levi Decker with 147. The fifth candidate, Sean Zellers, lost with 86 votes, according to the unofficial results.

In Whiteside County, Albany had the highest turnout with 46.52% of 733 registered voters.

Like Ashton, Albany had contested races for village president and trustee. John (Jack) Seifert was elected president with 200 votes, while his opponent, Jerry Anglese, landed at 124 votes, according to the unofficial results.

For village trustee, the three elected were Pamela L. Piersol at 189 votes, Robert J. Brashaw Jr. at 188 and Timothy Alan McDonald at 188. They ran against Robert Griffis who got 135 votes, Joyce M. Tegeler with 116 and Richard (Floyd) Boston at 101, according to the unofficial results.

The official results won’t be available until April 15 because Illinois gives election departments two weeks to certify their numbers.

trict’s schools. Every building will now have a building project to complete plus a large new multi-purpose gym addition at the high school. Voters voted yes 1,272 with 674 no. Voters also approved a tax rate hike with 1,123 yes to 750 no. City Council voted to increase both the water and sewer rates at their monthly meeting. Water would be increased by $1.05 per month for minimum usage, and sewer charge increased by $1.45 per month. The minimum sewer usage was reduced to 1,000 gallons, the same as for water.

Erie among 178 fire districts to receive state funding

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

SPRINGFIELD – Five local fire protection districts are among 178 districts that will be receiving state grants to purchase equipment, state Sen. Li Arellano Jr., R-Dixon, and the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal announced April 2.

“These grants are critical for our rural emergency services,” Arellano said. “Many of these departments operate on tight budgets and depend on community fundraising just to stay afloat. This funding ensures they have the resources necessary to protect and serve their communities effectively.”

The following fire departments in the 37th District received grants:

• Dunlap Community Fire Protection District, $21,985

• Erie Fire Protection District, $23,919

• Lee Community Fire Protection District, $25,000

• Malta Fire Protection District, $11,997

• Mineral Gold Fire Protection District, $24,991

The program was established to provide grants of up to $26,000 each for the purchase of small firefighting and ambulance equipment. The OSFM received 347 applications, requesting around $7.7 million in funding for this grant period.

Other area departments receiving grants are:

• Carroll County: Lanark Fire Protection District, $26,000; Milledgeville Fire Protection District, $16,331.20

• Henry County: Colona Community Fire Protection District, $21,500;

• Rock Island County: Hampton Fire Rescue, $17,500

• Stephenson County: Davis Fire Protection District, $18,505; Rock City Fire Protection District, $24,840

Most Illinois fire departments, fire protections districts, township fire departments, and stand-alone, nonprofit ambulance service providers were eligible to apply. All fire departments, fire protections districts and township fire department applicants were required to have participated in the National Fire Incident Reporting System for a minimum of two years prior to applying.

“Grant programs like our Small Equipment Grant Program are critical in providing fire departments and ambulance providers with the necessary equipment to ensure their staff can perform their duties safely and efficiently. These grants alleviate the burden of tough financial decisions, allowing departments to acquire essential tools without delay, ensuring they have what they need when they need it,” Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera said.

Rivera said this program is an innovative approach to a problem that has long caused difficulties for fire departments and not-for profit ambulance services in Illinois, particularly those that have hardships in generating the necessary revenue for small equipment. The purpose is to allow eligible applicants the opportunity to purchase small equipment that they may otherwise not be able to purchase.

Erie man sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting 15-year-old

Dallas Jones also sentenced for possessing video of sex abuse of a person younger than 18

MORRISON – An Erie man has been sentenced in Whiteside County to four years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to sexually assaulting a teenager in 2020.

Dallas N. Jones, 23, pleaded guilty to that charge as well as charges in two other cases – one in which he pleaded guilty to possessing a video in February 2021 depicting a person younger than 18 being sexually abused and another in which he pleaded guilty to criminal sexual abuse for having sex with two 16-year-olds in his apartment in January 2021.

The cases were filed in connection

with three separate events that happened in 2020 and early 2021 – when he was a recent high school graduate – with teens he had met while in high school. The Whiteside County State’s Attorney’s Office filed trial information in all three cases March 30, 2021. Those cases include:

Dallas N. Jones, 23,

of Erie

• One felony case accusing him of committing two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sex abuse on Oct. 11, 2020. The charge accused him of having sex with a 15-year-old while she was under the influence of cannabis. He pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual assault, was sentenced to four years in prison and will be on mandatory supervised release anywhere from three years to life. The other three charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

• A second felony case accusing

309-659-7944 or

(cell)

him of two counts of creating a video depicting sexual abuse of a person younger than 18 on Sept. 5, 2020, and a third count of possessing a video on Feb. 26, 2021, depicting a person younger than 18 being sexually abused. He pleaded guilty to the possession charge and was sentenced to 180 days in the Whiteside County Jail and 48 months of probation. The other two charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

• The third case charged him with two misdemeanor counts of criminal sex abuse of two 16-year-old victims on Jan. 3, 2021. He pleaded guilty to both counts and was sentenced to 180 days in the Whiteside County Jail. Whiteside County Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Simon said the two teenagers went to Jones’ apartment knowing they would be drinking alcohol, that Jones would be there and sex acts would occur. The teens, who drank to excess, later learned they had been video recorded while having sex with Jones, Simon said. The recording was not found.

The victim of the felony cases as well as the two misdemeanor victims were aware of the terms of the plea agreement and supported them, Simon said.

After hearing the terms of the proposed plea and the factual basis for the charges, Whiteside County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Rangel-Kelly left the courtroom to weigh her decision.

When she returned, she said she had left the courtroom to think about whether to accept the agreement, not to cause angst for the defendant.

“Disturbing is an understatement for what these charges were,” Rangel-Kelly said.

She said she would accept the agreement because all victims supported its terms. If they had not, Rangel-Kelly said, she would not have accepted the plea deal.

After he was sentenced, Jones was taken into immediate custody. Jones also was ordered to have no contact with the three victims. He also was ordered to register as a sex offender.

Our Savior Lutheran Church near Sterling celebrating 150 years

STERLING – Our Savior Lutheran Church in rural Sterling is inviting the public to celebrate its 150th anniversary with the congregation on Sunday, April 13.

The Rev. Phil Heuser said the celebration begins at 9 a.m. with a special church service followed by a light lunch and cake in the basement.

The Rev. Allan Buss will be the guest speaker. Buss is president of the Northern Illinois District of the Lutheran

Church Missouri Synod.

Heuser said the church, which stands at 21496 Hazel Road, was established in 1875 mostly by German immigrants who settled in the area.

“The church’s first leader was a German Lutheran pastor who came here from Clinton, Iowa, on horseback,” Heuser said. “Most of the original sanctuary building is still intact. However, the church’s steeple was replaced in 1921 after it was blown away, and we’ve added on a fellowship hall since then.”

For more information, call the church at 815-772-4345.

The clinic is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development. If your child has feet pointing inward or outward or complains of foot pain, they can be seen at this clinic. There is no charge for any diagnostic services at this clinic.

In the past, the Elks have purchased therapy services, corrective shoes, braces, wheelchairs and augmentative communication devices to help children overcome a variety of physical challenges.

Old Joliet Prison to be topic at April 17 program in Fulton

FULTON – The Volunteer Millers of de Immigrant Windmill will be hosting a program about the old Joliet, Illinois, prison at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111 10th Ave. in Fulton.

The speaker for the program is Kelly Klobucher, the chief operating officer for the Joliet Area Historical Museums. JAHM operates The Joliet Area Historical Museum, Old Joliet Prison, Planinsek Grocery & Meat Market Museum, Joliet Railroad Museum and the iconic Gemini Giant and Landing Pad Gift Shop in Wilmington.

JAHM also recently acquired the world’s first Dairy Queen and it is building a museum experience there.

The Old Joliet Prison, originally named Illinois State Penitentiary, was an operational prison from 1858-2002. The first inmates at the site were the ones to begin construction on the prison, with structures built from limestone quarried there. Both men and women were housed at the prison until 1933.

Because it was not modernized, including no running water or toilets in the cells, the prison was slated to close in 1925. It remained open, however, until 2002.

Old Joliet Prison is famous for housing Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, Baby Face Nelson and John Wayne Gacy. It became part of American pop culture with “The Blues Brothers” movie, the TV show “Prison Break.”

Klobucher originally is from LaSalle and has worked all over the state in her former role as director of the Illinois Association of Museums.

Light refreshments will be served after the presentation. The facility is accessible to people with disabilities. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 563-249-6115.
