Former Batavia alderman remembered for love of city By ERIC SCHELKOPF
eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia Alderman Chuck Beckman is remembered as someone who loved Batavia. Beckman, who died Sunday at the age of 84, was on the Batavia City Council for 30 years before stepping down in 2005. At the time, he was the longest-serving alderman on the council. He also started his own business, Chuck’s Garage, which now is run by his son, Dennis. “We lost a true Batavia icon,” Batavia 5th Ward Alderman Eldon Frydendall said Monday. “His heart was in Batavia, and it was in his business.” Frydendall now is the longest-serving alderman in Batavia. He has been on the Batavia City Council for almost 32 years and is running for reelection in April. Beckman was known for being outspoken. “I didn’t always agree with him, but I always got along with him,” Frydendall said. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Beckman was dedicated to serving his constituents. “He truly was a hands-on public servant,” Schielke said.

He genuinely fought very hard for the people he was representing.” He also served as a Batavia firefighter for a number of years and was chairman of the City Council committee that planned the construction

Schielke also noted Beckman’s passion. “He had very deep convictions, whether it was his own religion or politics,” he said. A visitation for Beckman will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. St. Charles host to an array of new businesses By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Leslie Grosshauser wanted to offer cyclists a workout experience she fell in love with at a studio in Chicago: the chance to compete with fellow cyclists – and themselves – via an overhead competition board tracking each person’s performance. “Talk about an added motivation,” she said. “They keep coming back, trying to beat their numbers.” She and Sammy Radi offer that feature and several classes at their cycling and fitness studio, S&L Tri-Cycle Fit Studio, 602 S. 1st St. The studio, which is celebrating its grand opening Saturday, is among more than two dozen businesses that have recently opened in St. Charles, according to a list provided by the city. Because the city doesn’t issue business licenses, staff learn about new businesses from utility requests and tips from organizations such as the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, economic development coordinator Michael Mertes said. The city publishes the information in its electronic newsletter, the Den. Recent additions include diverse businesses – restaurants, shops, industrial companies and professional services, among others – throughout the city’s districts. Diversity is important because it gives people options and can be beneficial when business slows in a particular segment, Mertes said. “It’s nice to see that people are seeing opportunities available on all sides of town, too,” Mertes said. Although it began in 2001, Vero Voce School of Visual and Performing Arts is included on the list. For the company to grow, last year it moved from an in-home studio to a

Mertes said it’s difficult for the city to keep tally of business closings but noted new businesses have outnumbered those that have closed in recent months. With an auto parts store, coffee shop, yogurt shop and winery to open St. Charles locations this year, Mertes said the city hopes that trend continues. “It’s always exciting to see a new face in town,” he said.

A vote was expected on the plan last year, but trustees opted to table the discussion on the development, which is projected to bring about 2,200 homes into the village in an area near the Metra station. Village President Dave Anderson said the idea is to get written comments and “some consensus” from the board to take to ShoDeen. In opting to table the issue, some board members indicated they had concerns over the number of multifamily units. Some wanted to be certain that the developer not be allowed to start work on a plat until the previous plat was nearly finished. And some are pushing for details about what ShoDeen would pay on a pedestrian bridge that is planned for the project. There is some urgency because land owned by ShoDeen would be used for an extension of Anderson Road, including a bridge that would offer a cross-

ing of the train tracks. Without an annexation deal in place for Elburn Station, it’s unlikely that ShoDeen would sell the land needed for the project. County Board member Drew Frasz appeared at last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, and he said thousands of dollars in federal funding could be at risk if the project is delayed much longer. Village residents have spoken on the topic at recent meetings. One resident, Tom Gush, said he will be there to offer support for the Elburn Station plans. He said because residents have been vocal against the project – for instance, resident Ron Rosecky has spoken at many meetings against Elburn Station – people may think most are against the project. Gush, a nine-year resident, said there are many residents in Elburn “who are interested in moving this project forward.” Gush said he fears if the issue is put off much longer, the village will lose the money for the bridge. “If we don’t do that, then I think the future of Elburn is pretty much a loss, as far as I’m concerned,” Gush said.

Those for and against abortion rights as steadfast as ever in their beliefs By BRENDA SCHORY

church – will be bound for Washington, D.C., for March for Life later this week. Twenty-five parishioners plan to go with five buses leaving the Rockford diocese Wednesday. “I don’t think it’s ever OK to have an abortion,” Dietz, 48, said. “I don’t think we have the right to go ahead and kill another human being. To me, the issue is black and white. You can’t kill another human being.” ••• In its landmark decision, the high court ruled that women have a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment. And that restrictions on a woman’s right to abortion in the first 12 weeks
of pregnancy were unconstitutional. The court also found that states have an interest in regulating abortion for the protection of women’s health. “Roe v. Wade is about privacy more than abortion,” Willadsen said. “I don’t care if [a surgery] is a tonsillectomy, a toenail removal or an abortion – it’s nobody else’s business. We have consciences for a reason. We can’t live our lives by other people’s consciences.” Willadsen said she wants to see an emphasis on preventing pregnancies, which would reduce abortions. “Procreation is such a major thing to do; people should be taking that a lot more seriously,” Willadsen said. “It’s a

choice. People need to make the choice to get pregnant – that is where the real choice should be. Beyond that, it’s nobody’s business.” Willadsen said if she were counter-protesting, her sign would read: Right to private life. ••• Despite being vilified by the anti-abortion movement, Pam Sutherland, vice president for public policy for Planned Parenthood of Illinois, said the organization devotes 90 percent of its services to health issues other than abortion. These include cervical cancer screenings, breast cancer screenings, treatment and counseling for sexually transmitted diseases. And as of the

cool wind buffeted a smallgroupofprotesters who marched in the pale sunshine of a January morning. Their signs proclaimed their opposition to abortion: “Moms for life.” “Dads for life.” “Stop abortion now.” “Planned Parenthood lies to you.” Their presence near the Planned Parenthood clinic in Aurora on Saturday was the first part of their annual observance of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Batavia resident Kathy Callahan said she was protesting “because I think that abortion is the killing of innocent babies, and I’m against killing babies.” It is the 40th anniversary of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion rights for women, and those opposed to abortion are as steadfast as ever – but so are those who favor abortion rights, such as Geneva resident Beth Willadsen. “In my opinion, thank God it’s legal,” Willadsen, 52, said. “I can’t imagine being in a situation where I’d have to make that decision. But if it’s a decision that needs to be made, you should have safe medical care. I’m just ... doing everything I can to make sure Roe v. Wade stays the law of the land.” And so there is the divide. “It’s a very sad thing for America to have 40 years of killing innocent children,” Callahan said. During the protest, Geneva resident Karen Moore came back from a short break to rejoin the marchers. “I’m here to pray for mothers, for families, for babies, for everyone involved in the abortion industry,” Moore said. “My heart goes out to everyone, and I’m hoping that [through] the results of our presence, we can make a difference; we can save children in the Fox Valley area.” Batavia resident Kathleen Dietz, the Respect Life coordinator at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia, said she – along with others from her
past six months, the Aurora clinic does nonsurgical vasectomies. Sutherland said in the years before Roe, birth control and access to it was a problem for women. “Birth control was just made legal in 1965 for married women. It was the first time women had access to a reliable contraceptive,” Sutherland said. “Roe happened because they were not that reliable. … Roe opened up a whole new discussion.” Women needed better access to birth control and more information, she said, adding this has led to abortion numbers going down steadily in the past 10 to 15 years. And these days, more women seek long-acting birth control, IUDs and implants that last three to five years. “They never have to remember to come every three months and get their Depo-Provera shot or, ‘I forgot to take my pill.’ ” Sutherland said. “It reduces unintended pregnancies. Most women seek abortions for unintended pregnancies … regardless of all their protests, we are still the ones [whose] services are reducing the need for abortion.” ••• William Beckman, president of Illinois Right to Life, said contraception actually increases the need for abortion. “If you do it long enough, it always fails and you end up with an abortion anyway,” Beckman said. But other than challenging contraception, casual sex and promoting sexual abstinence until marriage, Beckman said maybe the anti-abortion movement cannot overturn Roe. “Forty years is very important,” Beckman said. “It’s time to change things, but not do it politically. We can do it other ways. We can change people’s hearts.” What the movement has is a younger generation, he said. “They are all born after 1973,” Beckman said. “Their Tshirts will say, ‘I survived Roe v. Wade, but it will not survive me. It will be ended.’ That is a powerful slogan.”

Hikers learn to identify winter landscape By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Trees in winter, their bark plain with no leaves to define them, are still identifiable – if you know what to look for. The potato chip tree is wild black cherry, easy to spot by its bark. The branches of a red oak reach to the sky while the burr oak’s are crooked; the pin oak’s reach down and the white oak’s reach out like a wide embrace. Buckeye, chestnut, black walnut, silver maple and basswood also were among trees Campton Township naturalist Jack Shouba identified Saturday. Shouba led about a dozen people in a nature hike at Corron Farm in Campton Hills for a lesson in reading the landscape in winter. “We wanted to do a little education and show people what

of farmland, he said. The trail through the woods at the 1830s farmstead was a blend of oaks and invasive species – such as
the box elder – and some – such as the wild cherry – that are native to Illinois but don’t belong in an oak forest. Every few steps, Shouba stopped and talked about how to identify trees in a winter landscape. Taking out a small Swiss army knife, he cut a twig from a tree and described it. “The twig is thick, and it has a ‘face’ where a leaf fell off – it’s a black walnut,” Shouba said, passing the twig around. From the ground, he picked up a few broken walnut shells, adding, “And there are walnuts around. That’s a clue.” Another snip of another tree showed a yellow bud. This, he said, was a yellow-bud hickory, also known as bitternut because the nut is, well, bitter. Shouba spoke of the wonder of oak trees, especially burr oaks, with their coarse, toughlooking bark.

“That is strong enough to stand up to a prairie fire,” Shouba said. “Oaks have a strategy. Their leaves burn in a fire, but their bark is not hurt by fire.” The strategy is survival, Shouba said. Its rivals, such as the box elder and maple trees, would succumb to a prairie fire brought on by a lightning strike. Once the rivals are swept away in fire, young oaks can sprout. One of the challenges of the volunteers at Corron Farm, Shouba said, is to clear the understory and encourage young oaks, which need sunshine instead of shade to grow. Areas where volunteers had already cleared invasive species and those that do not belong showed signs of recovery. “Grass is a good sign,” he said. “There is enough sun here to support it.”

Suspect at large for more than a year arrested By ASHLEY RHODEBECK
arhodebeck@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A 38-year-old man who dodged a five-year prison sentence and multiple felony charges out of Campton Hills has been taken into custody after eluding authorities for more than a year, Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said. Acting on an anonymous tip, Campton Hills police – with assistance from the St. Charles Police Department and Kane Daniel R. County Sher- Kellogg iff’s Office – arrested Daniel R. Kellogg on Saturday at a relative’s house in St. Charles, Hoffman said. Kellogg was charged with flight to avoid prosecution/escape, a charge that carries no bond, Hoffman said. He said this is in addition to charges issued in 2011: burglary, deceptive practice and possession of a stolen vehicle. The 2011 charges stem from fraudulent activity involving a house Kellogg rented in the 40W700 block of Grand Monde Drive in Campton Hills, Hoffman said. In addition to writing the owner a bad check, Kellogg reportedly sublet the house and changed the title to
his name with a Quit Claim Deed by claiming his landlord was dead. He also tried to sell the residence as his own, but the owner’s real estate agent saw the listing. Kellogg also authorized numerous improvements to the house, including the installation of a new HVAC system, Hoffman said. However, he said, Kellogg paid with bogus checks, resulting in thousands of dollars of liens placed on the house. Additionally, Kellogg reportedly stole the landlord’s van and Corvette that were stored at the house. He scrapped the van and sold the sports car to a dealership, Hoffman said. The Corvette was located in Indiana and has been returned to its owner. In late July 2011, the Campton Hills Police Department issued a nine-count felony warrant for Kellogg. Earlier that month, Kellogg was sentenced to five years in prison for burglarizing cars parked outside a St. Charles gym. The judge gave him 30 days to report for incarceration, and Kellogg fled to Turkey, Hoffman said. Kellogg lived there until his recent return to the United States. Online court records indicate Kellogg is expected in court for a status hearing Jan. 31.

KOVELS:
ANTIQUES AND COLLECTING
BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM
A toy with hidden parts that give it a second use can add to its value, so look carefully at unfamiliar playthings. A teddy bear sometimes has a hidden music box inside or is made to be used as a muff. A tiny bear with a removable head can actually be a valuable perfume bottle. Even more surprising are a pair of seated bisque dolls that double as liquor decanters. The dolls, made by Gebruder Heubach of Germany, are shaped like charming baby dolls with blond hair and sideglancing eyes. At first they look like the more familiar “piano babies.” Why a decanter hiding in a doll? They were made in 1910, before Prohibition in the United States, so there was no legal reason to hide alcoholic drinks. Perhaps some people felt that bottled spirits should be stored out of sight in a 9-inch tall ceramic figurine. This type of decanter is very rare, so the dolls as a pair sold for $969. *** Q: I recently acquired a 16inch cast-iron bell and yoke. The bell has the number 2 on the top. The yoke is marked “The C.S. Bell Co.,” “2” and “Hillsboro, O.” on one side and “No. 2 Yoke” and “1886” on the other side. It’s clean and not rusted. What is it worth? A: C.S. Bell Co. was founded by Charles Singleton Bell. He operated a foundry in Hillsboro, Ohio, beginning in 1858. The company made farm equipment and stoves. One day, while working to develop a new type of metal alloy, Bell accidently dropped a piece of the metal and
discovered that it made a ringing sound like a bell. The company began making bells from the new alloy, and by the 1880s C.S. Bell was the largest producer of bells in North America. Most bronze bells are marked with the name of the company on the bell, but C.S. Bell always marked the yoke instead. The Bell family continued to operate the business until 1974. Bells were made at the Hillsboro site until at least 1984. Another company, Prindle Station, claims to make bells today that are identical to the original bells made by C.S. Bell. A C.S. Bell Co. bell with a No. 2 yoke sold recently for more than $250.
and then the war started and there were no more day camps in our area. Is the song book collectible?
The beheaded doll has a glass decanter hidden inside, and so does her “headed” twin. The pair sold for $969 at a June 2012 Theriault’s doll auction in Annapolis, Md.
*** Q: What does it mean when an ad says a Northwood vase is “JIP shape”? A: “JIP” stands for “jack-inthe-pulpit” and describes a vase shaped something like the flower with that name. It’s a narrow vase with a wide mouth that has one side pulled upward and the other side folded downward. Vases in this shape were first made by Stevens & Williams of Stourbridge, England, in about 1854. The term “jack-in-the-pulpit” wasn’t used until Louis Comfort Tiffany used it for vases he made beginning in 1900. Northwood Glass Co., of Wheeling, W.Va., was one of several other glass manufacturers that made vases in this shape. *** Q: I bought a heating stove at an auction and would love to know more about it. It is inscribed “No. 14, Orient, 1888, Bridgeford & Co., Pat’d Dec. 6, 1886.” The stove has pottery tiles with “portraits” on either side of the center opening. Any help on value would be appreciated.
A: The Orient was an “open fire” heating stove patented by Bridgeford & Co., of Louisville, Ky. It was described as “the handsomest, cheapest and most perfect-operating open stove in the market.” The heat could be regulated by adjusting the ventilators in the lower blowers so that the fire didn’t burn out overnight. Bridgeford made stoves for several companies, including the Barstow Stove Co. of New York, which was in business from 1836 until 1929. Several models of the Orient stove were manufactured. Models similar to yours and attributed to Barstow Stove Co. have sold for $500 to $2,000, depending on condition. Many Orient stoves have been completely restored and refinished by their owners. *** Q: I own a book of camp songs that I got when I attended a day camp run by the WPA at Niobrara State Park in Nebraska. The song book, titled “Camp Songs,” pictures a campfire on the cover. I went to the camp for two years,

A: The Works Progress Administration was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in May 1935 to provide jobs for some of the unemployed during the Depression. WPA projects included building roads and bridges, schools, playgrounds, parks and airport landing fields. There were WPA projects for artists, writers, historians and mathematicians. Job training was offered as well, and day camps for children were established in several areas of the country. More than 8 million people were employed by the WPA during the eight years it existed. The program, renamed “Work Projects Administration” in 1939, ended in June 1943 after there was no longer a shortage of jobs. WPA items of all types are collected. Your camp song book is an interesting memento of the times. It is worth about $10 to $20. *** Q: I have a plate marked “PL” with a line under it. The words “Limoges” and “France” are beneath the line. Can you tell me who made the plate and how much it’s worth? A: The mark on your plate was used by La Porcelaine Limousine of Limoges, France. The company was founded by Joseph Redon and P. Jouhanneaud and his son in about 1905, and was in business until about 1938. A 9-1/2-inch plate decorated with roses made by Porcelaine Limousine auctioned recently for $23. *** Tip: Don’t store pewter near cardboard or vinegar. The fumes

The inauguration is the ceremony in which the new or reelected president is inducted into office. This year it will be held at noon on January 21. It takes place outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. At the inauguration ceremony, the president takes an oath of office. With right hand raised and left hand on an open Bible, the new president says the following statement:

The Seal of the President of the United States contains a circle of white stars representing America’s 50 states. The banner that reads E PLURIBUS UNUM is Latin for “out of many, one” meaning out of many states, one country and also, out of many peoples, one nation. There are 13 stars, clouds, leaves and arrows that represent the original 13 states. Starting with the first letter in each line below, circle every other letter to discover what the olive branch represents and what the arrows the eagle is holding represent.
Imagine that you have been selected to advise the president on the concerns of children. Look through the newspaper for articles addressing topics that affect children. Make a list of ways you think the president could help children. Look through the newspaper to find five or more words that begin with the letter I. Cut out the words and glue them onto a piece of paper in alphabetical order. Challenge: Can you do this with more than five words?
Fill in the missing words in the below article.
Several presidents have had children who lived with them in the White House.
Barack Hussein Obama will be sworn into office as the 44th president of the United States during his inauguration celebration on January 21. He will take the oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Serious debt reduction is needed
To the Editor: Congress, please take notice – we taxpayers are watching carefully to see who is showing the political leadership necessary to get and implement serious and disciplined debt reduction. Those of you who show the determination to accomplish this will be retained. Those that don’t believe “we the people” are serious, will no longer have the privilege of being retained. Do not think your retention is a foregone conclusion. Evidence of doing your job must include demonstrating your support and voting for true debt reduction without “pork.” There also must be evidence that lobbyists’ special interests do not influence the way you vote. Congress must support and vote for real, unencumbered debt reduction, which is in the best interests of the country – aka, we the people. Chuck Barr St. Charles

Crop insurance soaks taxpayers during drought The WASHINGTON POST The drought that struck the United States in 2012 affected about 80 percent of agricultural land, making it the most extensive such weather event since the 1950s, according to the Agriculture Department – or USDA. Consumers will feel the impact of last year’s smaller harvests in the form of higher grocery prices this year. Yet the increases will be relatively modest – a half-percentagepoint increase in food price inflation, according to USDA economic projections. This is a tribute to the American farm sector’s productivity. As such, it is also a
reminder of how far-fetched the rationale for federal agricultural subsidies – the threat of food shortages – really is. The most recent invocation of this phantom came amid the drought, when congressional boosters of the subsidymarbled 2012 farm bill tried, without success, to exploit the dry spell. In fact, farmers were well-protected against the drought – at significant cost to taxpayers. The vast majority of U.S. farmland is covered by crop insurance, which is heavily subsidized by the government. Washington pays 62 percent of farmers’ premiums – at a cost of $7 billion for the

2012 crop year. It reimburses administrative costs for the 15 insurance companies that sell the policies, to the tune of $1.4 billion in 2012, and also protects the companies against financial loss. To be specific, the USDA announced last week that the federal crop insurance program has paid $11.4 billion to cover 2012 farm losses so far. U.S. farmers could end up claiming $3.85 for every dollar in premiums, according to Kansas State University economist Art Barnaby. This, in a year when low interest rates have boosted the value of farmland and farmers overall earned $114 billion in net income, the second-highest

total in the past three decades. The government’s total cost for crop insurance could hit nearly $16 billion for 2012, an all-time record. Over the past decade, the program has cost $59.5 billion. Arguably, the existence of such lavish taxpayer protection magnified the losses from last year’s drought and other previous weather events, by inducing farmers to plant marginal acreage in the first place and reducing their incentive to set aside previous years’ earnings as a hedge. In addition to promoting excessive risktaking, it favors big corporate farms over small family farms. The more crops you grow,
the more premium support you get (up to a maximum subsidy rate of 80 percent). In short, federally backed crop insurance has long since evolved into yet another form of corporate welfare, whose direct costs and perverse unintended consequences outweigh its purported public benefits. The 2012 farm bill would have compounded the error by expanding crop insurance to cover almost all farmers’ losses from price fluctuations as well as natural disasters. The bill’s failure affords lawmakers an opportunity to reform this increasingly wasteful program, and they should take it.

Special shout-out to the PA guys
Pro hockey St. Louis at Blackhawks, 7:30 p.m., CSN
By KeVIN DRULeY
kdruley@shawmedia.com Park that bicycle along Kirk Road, and kindly remove your headgear. If not an authentic “Special shout-out,” the men and women of our gymnasium microphones at least deserve some reverence. Who else but a public address announcer can calmly call a crowd’s attention to the to national anthem within moments of assailing its eardrums? Who else but a PA announcer – apart from the athletes, that is – can leave fans talking long after that drive home? Basketball arguably lends itself best to the emotional whims of the medium. Between the pace, scoring and sporadic stoppages, there always are opportunities to make one’s voice heard. That, of course, is the idea, and Chronicle-area PA practitioners recently shed light on their backgrounds and strategies. Perk up your ears if you want in; several ascended to the position simply by being in the right place at the right time. Rudy Dubis, the man who welcomes Batavians and visitors alike to the “HOME OF THE BATTLIN’ BULLDOGS!,” does not demand lunch or announce his arrivals home so boisterously. Raising his voice to his wife wouldn’t be advisable, not after the weekend-heavy announcing schedule Dubis has kept for more than four decades. Dubis “can pretty much count on one hand” the number of boys basketball games he has missed at his alma mater in 42 years, and one, in fact, conflicted with a wedding. His own. Other than that, Dubis traditionally has delivered on a vow of novelty after then-Batavia athletic director Bob Tober asked for a favor shortly after Dubis’ 1970 graduation. Dubis’ signature greeting actually was an adlib, as he later incorporated “Battlin’ “ when inspired by

No one fought the phrasing, which since has landed on the wall and a city water tower, not to mention many football and basketball fans’ psyches. “Pretty much everybody knows who I am,” Dubis said. “Anybody who’s ever seen a Batavia High School basketball game. My voice is pretty ... I don’t know. It’s hard to cover it up, I guess.” Distinction is a vital quality to PA announcing, along with familiarity. Dubis exhibits both despite working outside the high school building. By day, he’s part of the printing industry and owns a DJ service, Big R Productions, on the side. Elsewhere, school faculty handle most of the announcing assignments, gaining stipends either through seniority or sign-up sheet. At St. Charles East, the football mic can be tough to wrangle if you’re not already entrenched in the press box rotation, but other sports aren’t as competitive. At this point, Neil Currie’s colleagues wouldn’t dare

The bearded, occasionally overalled and often offbeat East social studies teacher – alias “The Special Shout-out Guy” – recently completed his first football season after earlier experience announcing boys basketball and boys and girls soccer. While Currie’s improvisational antics – namely the “Shout-out,”a matter-offact mention of someone in attendance or a passer by – have had their occasional detractors, would it surprise anyone steeped in the Saints’ scene that he once was a parttime carnival barker? At the behest of his parents, Currie helped hock goods during high school and college summers at Northbrook Days. Currie also played centerfullback for the Glenbrook North and Monmouth College soccer teams and worked in
computer systems analysis before entering teaching. It all adds up to an eclectic and entertaining experience at East games, although Currie is careful not to distract from the real show. “You’ve got to have balance. You have to know people are there to watch the game; they’re not there to hear what you say,” Currie said. “The focus is on the kids. When I get a chance, I get to add to it and help it out. But it’s really all about the students, which is really cool.” New Kaneland boys basketball announcer Andy Drendel once inspired the Knights’ student section as a player. As of Nov. 30, the 2005 Kaneland alumnus has helped ignite it with a microphone in his hand. That morning, Kaneland athletic secretary Linda Kelley emailed Drendel, a physical education teacher at McDole Elementary in Montgomery, about filling in for Ryan Malo, who had a conflict with night courses he was taking.

Currie enjoys a good shouting match The anatomy of Neil Currie’s first “Special Shout-out” at St. Charles East began with a man in his mid-50s working on his fitness. East assistant principal Bob Abraham was pedaling his bicycle along Kirk Road one day in the fall of 2009, and Currie was working as public address announcer during a boys soccer game. Inspiration struck Currie and his admittedly quirky sense of humor. The result stirred Abraham, too. “He waved at me and people started laughing, and the next day Dr. Abraham said, ‘ Hey, that was pretty cool, you know. You should do more of that,’ ” Currie said. “And I said, ‘OK. I can do that.’ ” Currie took on the role of football announcer for the first time this fall after fellow social studies faculty member and assistant athletic director Lori Drumtra recommended him. His trademark, deadpan delivery often greets the “Shoutout” subject, and also can be heard in his persistent plugs for names that make announcers’ jobs even more enjoyable. Consider “SAMIIIII PAWLAAAAK!” for instance, or that Wehrmeister staple of the late 2000s, “SCOTTYYYY WENNNNDT!” “People even at the high school level come to expect a first-class, professional job, and fortunately we have two or three people capable of doing that,” Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said. “And they all have their own distinct styles, as well.” Things are a little less democratic at Rosary, but not by design. Athletic director Mary Lou Kunold has been calling Royals basketball,
the concession stand. Instead of simply alerting fans to its existence, Currie often spots a familiar face during a stoppage in play and purports to give his or her concession picks, even if he or she may not have a palate for Skittles or popcorn. “That’s just me,” Currie said. “That’s who I am.” Currie, who began as a fill-in when other announcers were sick, gives his own “Shout-out” to Jim Caine and Dave Kohlhagen of St. Charles for stressing the importance of getting pronunciations correct and emphasizing that “People like to hear their names.” Neither man offered counsel about handling fame, but Currie has addressed that on his own. “It’s nice,” he said, “but it also can sometimes be a pain. Kids will say, ‘ I want a Shout-out.’ I usually tell them, you know, that usually comes out of the thin of the air. I don’t take requests. But kids really enjoy the Shout-outs. Parents do, too. It’s funny.”

volleyball and softball “as long as we’ve had games,” sometime shortly after her 1973 hire to coordinate the physical education program at the all-girls school. “I keep asking people to do it and no one wants it,” Kunold said. “It’s fine. You’re doing the scorebook and it’s pretty easy. You just follow what’s going on.” Eventually, Kunold knows someone will step in to follow her own act, a day she’s by no means dreading. As Currie says, games are about the students. PA announcers only provide the soundtrack – the best with a shtick and a smile.

Drendel spent much of his commute to Maple Park, as well as the sophomore game, mumbling to himself and fretting. He didn’t yet realize his father – longtime Kaneland teacher and coach Ralph Drendel – had been a former announcer, and was racking his brain for nuggets from the high school speech course he took from English faculty member and football announcer Kurt Green. Close friend Ryan Gierke, a former teammate and Knights assistant, razzed his buddy and told him he’d be fine. Turns out Drendel did well enough to not only earn comparisons to his father, but receive the permanent announcing nod for the rest of the season. “I know I don’t have that Kurt Green voice, you know, but I just try to make sure I say everything correctly,” Drendel said. “I don’t want to sound like I don’t know what I’m doing, basically.” Drendel sometimes consults YouTube for ideas for standout “And-1” or 3-point calls. He realizes catchphrases come gradually and naturally, and might be wise to head to Geneva for inspiration if time allows. There, faculty members Jason Santo and Matt Hahn are part of a rotation that sometimes includes longtime Vikings voice Kurt Wehrmeister, who recently stepped away from full-time announcing after about three decades of politely asking male fans to find another spot for their hats before the anthem. Santo’s “Two shotssssssss” and unique emphasis and pause between “time” and “out” quickly have gained fans’ attention. Hahn, meantime, excels at trumpeting short, punchy

Windau provides East unexpected lift
Not only had St. Charles East senior Tyler Windau not started any games for East before Friday night’s game against St. Charles North, but the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has barely played most of the season. But East coach Pat Woods, looking for more production in the paint, inserted Windau in the starting lineup for the rivalry showdown, and Windau took advantage. A crucial put-back by Windau gave the Saints a 48-43 lead with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ eventual 56-55, overtime victory. Windau also supplied the first basket of the night for the slow-starting Saints in addition to grabbing seven rebounds. The Saints have a deep team, and Windau has been stuck playing behind big guys David Mason and Dan Wilkerson, most of the season. Other times, East has gone with smaller lineups that do not include a traditional post player. “We’re talking about kids trying to separate themselves in practice and when they get an opportunity [in games],” Woods said. “It’s tough when you have a lot of guys real close to each other kind of lumped up. “We’re kind of going with the motto of whoever is next up in line, step up and produce, and Ty produced big-time for us [Friday]. Larkin, Geneva and St. Charles East each have two Upstate Eight Conference River losses, though the Royals (6-2 UEC River) are a half-game ahead of the Vikings (5-2 UEC River) and a game ahead of the Saints (4-2 UEC River). Geneva’s win snapped an 11-game Royals winning streak. “We’ve scouted Larkin five games, and seeing them right up there next to the floor rather than 20 rows up, you have an even greater appreciation of what they’re able to do, because man alive, do they have speed,” Ralston said.

While mostly enthused about the Vikings’ performance, Ralston pointed out Geneva’s inability to contain slashing Larkin guard Kendale McCullum (game-high 24 points). “Now, obviously, the big question is if we play them another time, how are we going to stop McCullum Holey mackerel from slicing and dicing Geneva’s 61-56 win us,” Ralston said. “We had at Larkin on Saturday some guys who looked like tightened the Upstate Eight Swiss cheese out there. QUICK READ Kevin Druley stint did not include a trip to Geneva, it also didn’t keep Campana from learning about the Cougars’ organization. “I heard It’s a nice field and they get people to come out,” Campana said. “That always makes it good when you’re a guy in A-ball.” At that point in Campana’s career, Kane County was about to conclude a long player development contract with the Oakland A’s. The Cougars traditionally have been a top MWL draw even when they were aligned with Baltimore, Florida, Oakland and Kansas City before the Cubs’ partnership took root in September, inspiring fans and brass in both Geneva and Chicago. “When you have a place that’s close, I think you’ll get some more people coming out and get to see the future of what we’ve got in the organization,” Campana said. Furnaces supplanted hot stoves as primary warming sources long ago. Still, stoves burn with the energy of offseason baseball chatter, of which there was plenty during a brief Cubs Caravan visit to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark last week. The Cougars are set to open their first season as a Low-A Cubs affiliate on April 4, with a “Meet the Cubs” fan event scheduled Feb. 1. Here’s some kindling as those dates approach. Who knows, it might also help with this weather: • The Cougars added a pair of 5 p.m. Sunday starts as an attendance variable last season. When the twilight crowds – 5,159 on July 15 and 5,285 on July 29 – didn’t distinguish themselves, the club decided its usual Sunday starts were still the one for 2013. As in 1 p.m. “No real big reason, we just thought that a day game with the Sunday Funday [promotion] might make more sense getting the families out here,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “Plus, it probably makes more sense for the Cubs. It’s a day game as opposed to a night game.” The Cougars have 11 Sunday home games scheduled, playing two each in April, May, June, July and August before former Cubs farm club Peoria visits on the Sunday before Labor Day. • Cubs outfielder Tony Campana played only briefly in the Midwest League for then-Cubs affiliate Peoria in 2009. You should know – if you want something done, do it yourself. PiSceS (Feb. 20-March 20) – You’re likely to be far more successful in your commercial affairs if you use an indirect approach. Don’t be too obvious about your intentions and tip your hand prematurely. ArieS (March 21-April 19) – If you feel you could do a better job of making arrangements for others than someone else, don’t hesitate to ask to take over. That person might be pleased to get rid of the job. TAUrUS (April 20-May 20) – An important objective is reachable, but you might have to alter your tactics to achieve it. You won’t mind being flexible to deal with shifting conditions. GeMini (May 21-June 20) – Because you always do quite well with situations that challenge your imagination and creativity, you won’t dodge assignments that appear complex or difficult to others. cAncer (June 21-July 22) – Much to your surprise, you’ll perform ably and even reap substantial benefits from an arrangement that you thought offered little or no possibilities whatsoever. ScOrPiO (Oct. 24-nov. 22) – Remain both hopeful and expectant today, because, just when you think an important matter can’t be finalized to your satisfaction, events will take a turn for the better. SAGiTTAriUS (nov. 23-Dec. 21) – Try once again to get in touch with certain people who you believe are important to your immediate plans. They are likely to be more receptive to your ideas than they were previously. cAPricOrn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) – Be sure to manage your resources with extreme care, because your material trends look uncertain. The rules of working with writer James Patterson By KeVin nAnce
Special to The Washington Post When you co-write a thriller novel with James Patterson, certain rules apply. • Rule No. 1 for collaborating with the world’s best-selling author: Chapters must be short, with detailed descriptions, flashbacks or other digressions strictly forbidden. • Rule No. 2: The villains, who tend to drive the plots, must be at least as interesting and believable as the heroes, if not significantly more so. • Rule No. 3: If any disagreement arises, it’s Patterson who has the last word – literally and otherwise. “He’s the boss, and I have no problem with that,” says Mark Sullivan, 54, who has co-written three novels in Patterson’s globe-trotting “Private” series about the intrepid agents of a high-tech investigative firm with offices in various world capitals. The next book in the series, “Private Berlin,” will be published on Jan. 21 by Little, Brown. “Jim is the smartest story person – the quickest read, the most insightful critic – I’ve ever been involved with. He has an amazing ability to see flaws in stories, or to come up with a way to take the story to a whole new level. He doesn’t say much, but the stuff he says is just spot-on. I tell my wife, ‘It’s like going to study with Yoda.’” Besides, Sullivan reasons, a writer who has sold 275 million books (including a world record 53 No. 1 bestsellers) has to be doing something right, even if the critics who wax rhapsodic over Lee Child, Walter Mosley, George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane don’t always agree. “He knows more about the publishing business than anybody I’ve ever known,” says Sullivan, a former investigative reporter at the San Diego Union-Tribune who has written eight novels on his own, including 2012’s “Rogue.” “There are people who criticize Jim, but I’m an ambitious guy, and I always believed that I could be a big, best-selling writer. I’ve had spurts of that, but not what I wanted. To use the analogy of tennis, I always wanted to play Centre Court at Wimbledon, and one day the world’s top-ranked doubles player called and said, ‘You want to

James Patterson has sold 275 million books, including a world record 53 no. 1 bestsellers. play at Centre Court?’” In a phone interview from his home in Palm Beach, Fla., Patterson bristles at criticism of his collaborative process, which some have suggested amounts to an assembly line in which the supervisor is minimally involved – “the factory and all that crap,” says the 65-year-old author. “When people actually come up in my office and wander around here, looking at 40 manuscripts lying around, they see that it’s an artist’s studio, and all this stuff about it being a factory goes by the wayside. They see how involved I am in these things, and what a maniac I am ... . If it’s a factory, it’s a factory where everything is handtooled.” In most of his collaborations with about a dozen authors, Patterson says he begins the process by making a detailed outline of around 70 pages. After that, the collaborator sets about producing a draft, sending him pages about every two weeks for feedback. Finally, Patterson takes over, producing one to five new drafts until he’s satisfied. His partnership with Sullivan on the “Private” books – including “Private No Prisoners,” to be published later this year – is a bit unusual. Unlike most of the co-writers, Sullivan participated substantially in crafting the outlines; in the case of “Private Berlin,” he largely wrote the outline under his mentor’s watchful eye.
“Mark is great to work with – very bright, very reasonable, and he works very hard,” Patterson says. “He gets in there and chops wood, and I really like that. I don’t like to work with lazy writers. That’s one of the problems I have with working with writers in Hollywood. Oh, man, they just want to have lunches and stuff! That’s not true of all the writers out there, but there’s just so many who want to worry about stuff forever rather than just sit down and write the damn thing.” That isn’t to say that the PattersonSullivan collaboration has been an entirely bump-free ride. “He trusts me, and I’m flattered by that, but he has saved me multiple times from my own excess or my own lack of insight,” Sullivan says by phone from his home in Bozeman, Mont. “At certain times when I’ve really been on, Jim’s turned me loose. He’ll say, ‘This is the story we envisioned – run, and just keep running with it.’ Other times, he’s had to step in and say, ‘This isn’t going to fly – we’ve got to go back and look at the outline again before this gets too far afield.’ Or there’ll be something missing about the characters, usually the villains.” Perhaps the biggest adjustment that any new co-author has to deal with is Patterson’s insistence – some would say at the cost of literary values – on brief, streamlined chapters with a minimum of descriptive prose. “I’m always looking for pace,” he says unapologetically. “I always want to make sure that the book is moving along.” “The idea is to cut as close to the rising action of every scene, every chapter,” Sullivan says. “When you do that, and you’re thinking of chapters as scenes, with a definite goal and purpose, the chapters tend to be shorter. It’s true that the chapters in my books tend to be longer, but I’m collaborating with Jim, and that’s his style. But I’ve talked to a lot people about Jim’s books over the years, and that’s one of the things they love about them. People are harried these days – even diehard readers don’t have the time they want – and they can work their way through one of these books in a way you couldn’t if you were picking up an 800-page epic saga.” Get in and get out, in other words. Then make your way straight to the bank.
DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips for describing your mother’s response to a patient’s passing and how it affected the family. However, I also heard from many health care providers who said that it IS their duty to acknowledge the passing of one of their patients, and it should be considered part of the healing process for both the patient’s family and the health care provider. Read on: Dear Abby: I am a hematologist-oncologist. I try to send a sympathy card to each family after the death of their relative. If I receive a note or a copy of an obituary, I try to call the person to thank them for taking the time to contact me. After seeing “Grieving’s” letter, I took an informal poll of my colleagues and was gratified that many DO send notes. I was surprised that some do not extend sympathies. After hearing it, I encouraged them all to do so.
It’s the least we can do to promote healing among the survivors. – Ohio Oncologist Dear Abby: I am a retired medical oncologist. Early in my career, a grieving patient’s husband berated me for not contacting the family after his wife died. It was then that I realized that despite my excellent care, the family needed something more – closure. For 30 years, until I retired, I sent a personal sympathy card and message to each family concerning their loss. Sharing these thoughts also gave ME closure. – Doctor Jack in Arizona Dear Abby: Please let “Grieving” know that one reason the health care professionals did not acknowledge his wife’s death may have been they were instructed by the hospital/treatment center not to. In this day and age, when doctors are sued for malpractice, these types of sympathy notes can be used in court. – Yvonne in Amsterdam, Netherlands • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.
Less-invasive heart surgery holds promise for quick healing Dear Doctor K: I have aortic valve regurgitation and need to have my aortic valve replaced. What will happen during this procedure? Dear Reader: When it’s working properly, your aortic valve opens to allow oxygen-rich blood to flow from your heart into your aorta and out to the rest of your body. The aorta is the body’s largest blood vessel. (I’ve put an illustration of how healthy heart valves work on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Heart valves keep blood flowing in just one direction – the direction the heart wants to pump blood. Particularly when you’re sitting or standing up, gravity wants to pull blood back down into the heart from the aorta. If that happened, the heart would have to work much harder: It would keep having to pump the same blood out into the circulation. A healthy aortic valve prevents gravity from pulling blood back down into the heart. Aging and disease can damage the aortic valve. If it doesn’t close tightly, blood can re-enter the heart, causing aortic regurgitation. It can cause fatigue, shortness of breath, fainting and other symptoms.
ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff If your symptoms are severe, or if the condition is weakening your heart, you may need to have your aortic valve replaced with a prosthetic valve. Prosthetic valves are either synthetic mechanical valves or biological valves made of human or animal tissue. The traditional surgery involves splitting the breast bone, exposing the heart and then replacing the valve. An intravenous (IV) line is inserted into your arm to deliver fluids and medications. You will be given a general anesthetic. After your heart is exposed, your heart will be cooled and stopped while the surgery is being performed. That’s because it’s hard to perform surgery on a beating heart. Since your heart has stopped, you need a machine – a heart-lung machine – to get oxygen in your blood and pump it around the body. Once your heart is motionless, the surgeon will cut through its muscular wall. He or she will
remove the malfunctioning heart valve, insert the prosthetic valve and stitch it into place. After closing the incision in your heart wall, the surgeon will warm your heart. Once your heart is pumping steadily without leaking blood, you will be disconnected from the heart-lung machine. The surgeon will reattach the halves of your breastbone and your chest incision will be closed. For some patients, the heart surgeon can replace a heart valve through a smaller incision. New technologies allow artificial valves to be inserted into the heart without making even a small opening in the patient’s chest. Heart specialists are still gaining experience with these less-invasive approaches. There is little doubt that, because they involve cutting into fewer tissues, patients heal more quickly. However, it’s not yet clear if the long-term results of less-invasive types of surgery are as good as with traditional surgery.

Dr. Wallace: My mother seldom allows me to eat luscious kinds of junk food, such as french fries or sweets of any kind, including scrumptious chocolate, carbonated beverages and ice cream. This is because she wants me to continue having a clear complexion. When my mom was a teen, she wasn’t allowed to eat junk foods by her mother and my mom never had a complexion problem. Mom is convinced that you are what you eat and if you eat junk foods, you will have complexion problems. I’ve been reading your column for over a year and you have said many times that pimples, acne, whiteheads and blackheads are not caused by foods you eat, including junk foods. If that’s the case, what does cause facial blemishes? I need a reliable answer because my mom will not agree with you. – Nameless, Jackson, Miss. Dear Nameless: I have been in contact with several leading dermatologists (Dr. Jeffery Lauber in Southern California for one) and all agree that the dreaded teen complexion problems you mention are not caused by food intake. Dr. Alan Shalita, professor of dermatology at the State University of New York at Brooklyn, teaches that acne and other complexion problems are a natural part of maturing physically. He says that as teens mature, they start producing additional hormones that, in turn, increase the production of oil in the pores of the skin. This
’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace oil has nothing to do with the oil consumed on greasy french fries. Complexion problems occur when the oil and dead skin cells turn into a plug that blocks the pore and pushes up the skin surface, creating a whitehead. A blackhead forms when the oil in a plug dries and mixes with pigment in the skin. A pimple or acne cyst occurs when bacteria normally present in the skin start multiplying and inflame the inside of the plugged pore. A pimple is the scourge of most teens. An American Medical Association survey found that 89 percent of teenage girls and 78 percent of teen boys worry about complexion problems. At the onset of a complexion problem, a visit to a dermatologist is paramount. Modern treatment can do wonders to improve or eliminate this problem. The earlier the treatment begins, the easier it is for a teen to have a clear complexion. P.S.: Go easy on junk foods. Most are loaded with fats and calories.

Dear Abby: I would like to respond to “Still Grieving in Arkansas” (Nov. 20), who was upset that he didn’t get a response to a note he sent to his wife’s treating physician after her death. As an RN, my mom had a tendency to become very close to patients who required long-term care in the hospital. It seemed that she never had any “emotional detachment” from her patients, but instead formed an “emotional attachment.” I recall many times during the convalescence or death of these patients, Mom would come home from work and go to bed and cry from her own bereavement. As her son, I grieved, too, because it hurt me to see Mom hurting. As a young child, my father, siblings and I could have done without these periods of unnecessary emotional pain. Therefore, Dear Abby, I think you were right to say, “Please forgive them” when doctors and nurses don’t exhibit public remorse during times of grief. – RN’s Son in Georgia Dear RN’s Son: Thank you

Tricks, not laughs, from high and low
CELEBRITY CIPHER
Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher who died in 531 B.C., said: “When the highest type of men hear Tao, they diligently practice it. When the average type of men hear Tao, they half believe in it. When the lowest type of men hear Tao, they laugh heartily at it. Without the laugh, there is no Tao.” This week we are looking at the defensive principle that if you lead a low card from length, you guarantee at least one honor in that suit. With a weak suit, you lead an unnecessarily high card. This is no laughing matter, but there is one situation when the rule should be ignored – when you are leading partner’s suit and you have not supported that suit. Then, giving length information is (usually) more important than strength information. This deal is a textbook example. North passes as dealer, East opens one heart, and South leaps majestically to four spades. If West leads the heart seven (top of nothing), East will think it is a singleton or high from a doubleton. He will win the first trick with the heart nine (low from touching cards when playing third hand high), take the heart ace, and try to cash the heart king. But South will ruff and run all of his trumps. There is no minor-suit squeeze, but declarer takes eight spades and two clubs. Instead, West should lead the heart two, low from length in partner’s unsupported suit. Then East, after taking two tricks in the suit, will know that West has the one extant heart. East will shift to the diamond two (low from an honor) and the defenders will take two tricks in that suit for down one.
