Turtle season is upon us once again GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Over the past three or four weeks, we’ve gotten several calls about turtles. Turtles wandering through back yards. Turtles wandering through front yards. A turtle that, at first glance, appeared to have wandered successfully across the entrance road at the North Aurora Outlet Mall.

It turned out, though, that this mall turtle had been struck by misfortune. A vehicular misfortune, to be exact.

And that’s when I knew it was time to let folks know that turtle season is upon us once again.

In our region, late April, May and early June constitute turtle mating and egg-laying season. Snappers, spiny softshells, red-eared sliders and painted turtles, to name a few, are on the move. Some will be males in search of females or a new territory with less male competition. Many more will be females looking for suitable sites to dig nests and deposit the eggs that will become, in 75 to 90 days depending on species and prevailing temperatures, the next generation.

Some turtles, like the spiny softshell, travel only a short distance from their home waterways; others, most notably the snapper, may hike a mile or more before settling in.

And that’s when trouble can set in.

Aside from the dangers inherent in leaving their home habitats, turtles in our area also face a number of manmade hazards, including people. I’ve seen turtles bumped up against curbs, flattened against pavement and hopelessly entangled in debris. I’ve seen turtles digging nests in landscaping mulch, and in the gravel of highway shoulders (locations, that, were it not for the traffic whizzing by only inches away, actually would be ideal nest sites, well-drained and warm as they are).

Box turtles occasionally are found roaming around Kane County but should not be considered native. Their domed shells and nonwebbed feet distinguish them from local commoners like snapping turtles, painted turtles and red-eared sliders. far from home, only to be hauled off to the nearest river/creek/pond by a well-intentioned human. I recall biking on the Fox River Trail East a few springs ago, heading north on the stretch by the Geneva water treatment plant. A crowd had gathered, and a man was hauling himself up the rather steep bank near the bike bridge. He triumphantly announced that he had just “put that snapper back where he belongs!�

Sadly, that the turtle itself probably knew best where it belonged had never even registered with the kind man.

So what should you do if you find a turtle on a trek?

Ideally, nothing. The turtle, guided by its reptilian instincts, will figure out where it needs to go.

But here in the midst of suburbia, conditions usually are not ideal. Frequently, turtles end up on roadways. Then what?

If you’re inclined to help, you’ll first need to make sure you can do so without endangering yourself or others.

Next, move the turtle to the roadside, in the direction it is traveling. If the turtle has just started its crossing, and you move it back, he or she will just crawl out on the pavement again.

What if the turtle is a large snapper? Again, make sure you can help without getting

hurt. Large snapping turtles can tip the scales at 35 pounds or more and, as the name implies ‌ they snap. At times quite vigorously. If you’re brave, you can try picking the turtle up by its tail, making sure to give that long neck and gaping maw a wide berth.

Or, you could also try using a shovel or other such long-handled implement to hurry the beast along, again following the turtle’s original direction of travel.

The one exception to these rules would be if you were to come across a box turtle. With their high-domed upper shells (carapaces), hinged lower shells (plastrons) and webless feet, these land-dwelling creatures look quite different from their aquatic cousins.

Another important difference: They don’t normally live here.

Indeed, any box turtle you find in our area likely is an escaped pet or, worse, a pet someone has decided they no longer want. Should you find one of these wandering waifs, give me a call. We don’t run a turtle adoption service at the park district, but we can put you in touch with organizations that do.

If you’re lucky enough to have a yard – front or back – that a female turtle has deemed worthy enough for a nest – congratulations!

Hatchling turtles will emerge,

on their own, after the requisite amount of time has passed. Snapping turtles typically leave their home nest in late summer/early fall, and proceed to a pond for hibernation; painted turtles, however, tend to stay below ground until the arrival of spring.

And then Turtle Season will begin again.

Center will honor major blood donors during drive

Sarah Hitchings said that the park is one of their favorite places.

“We come every year, multiple times, to look at the new statues the park district has. It’s one of our favorite places,” she said.

GENEVA – Heartland Blood Center, 2000 W. State St., Geneva, is hosting a special blood drive from 11:30 a.m to 7 p.m. Monday, with honors to four major blood donors.

Among them are former Geneva Alderman Sam Hill, who donated 139 pints of blood, Anne Cesarone and Kathy Flores, both of Geneva, and Joseph Ryan of St. Charles.

Their stories will be shared to encourage more blood donations, Heartland spokeswoman Norma Strang said. The blood center has many openings Monday, so donors can call 630-208-8105 and schedule a time.

Cesarone, 44, has made platelet donations 91 times.

Platelet donations involve removing that part of whole blood from a donor, and then returning the remaining blood components.

Platelet donations can safely be made every two weeks, while whole blood donations can be made every eight weeks, she said.

“I give because I know it will help somebody,” Flores said. “It is one way of giving back. ... It’s all a good thing – somebody always needs blood somewhere.”

Hill, 77, who served as 1st Ward alderman for 12 years, said he gives blood every eight weeks. Hill said he will be at the Heartland center Monday, but it’s too soon for him to give blood yet.

“I’m just going to be there to welcome them,” Hill said.

“[Saturday] is my 92nd platelet donation,” Cesarone said. “It’s crazy isn’t it? ... I’ve always donated blood, but I switched to platelets about five years ago. Sometimes, I can give every two weeks, sometimes every three or four weeks depending on what I’ve got going on.”

Ryan, 57, said he has donated platelets many times.

“I donate because it’s a little thing I can do to help others,” Ryan said. “I donate platelets every two weeks.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Marilyn Miedzinski of St. Charles said she has long been looking forward to RiverFest, partly because she hardly ever misses a year, and partly because it means there will be funnel cakes.

“That’s the first thing we got,” she said as she watched her 6-year-old grandson take a ride down a giant slide at the carnival. “We’ll probably be here all three days. How can you not?”

River, and food and activities at Lincoln Park, Pottawatamie Park and through downtown St. Charles. Many fami-

lies stopped to pet baby goats or ride ponies at Lincoln Park on Friday afternoon, including Eva Schultz of St. Charles.

She said her family has attended the festival for the last eight years, and already hit up the carnival, food booths,

a rock-climbing wall and a petting zoo by early Friday afternoon.

“It’s a good festival to start out the summer,” Schultz said. “I’m glad we have it. The kids just got out of school and it’s too cold for the pool.”

Festivities continue today, kicking off with the Awakening the Dragon ceremony at 8 a.m., followed by Dragon Boat Races from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other activities throughout the day include shows by the Canine Capers, dragon boat cookie decorating and a water ski show at Pottawatomie Park. Evening entertainment includes a bring-your-own big wheel race, a family dance party and dancing under the

For the rest of the weekend, the Kane County SWAT Team is selling tickets to raffle off a Harley Fat Boy motorcycle on Nov. 2.

Nathan Moravec, a detective with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said they’re raising money to fix up an armored vehicle called a Mamba.

Moravec said the SWAT team has a low-ballistic truck, but he said the Mamba can resist a shot from a .50-caliber rifle.

“It needs a lot of work,” he said, noting that the SWAT team is a nonproft organi-

zation and donations are tax-deductible.

Jim and Mary Anne Lazowski of Geneva browsed some of the booths in downtown St. Charles Friday.

Mary Anne Lazowski said she tries to attend RiverFest every year and especially looks forward to visiting Pottawatamie Park.

“We just come to look around and enjoy lunch,” she said. “It’s so close.”

Miedzinski said she believes she has attended the festival almost every year since it started 31 years ago.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” she said. “It’s such a great event.”

By BRENDA SCHORY YjZ_fip7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd ST. CHARLES – Geneva-based ShoDeen expects to sell its apartment complex Covington Court in St. Charles to an Atlanta company for $19.2 million, officials said.

“We intend to buy it,” said Norman Radow, owner of Radco Companies, a real estate development and investment company. “We are in escrow.

The documents are all signed; all the cash is in and ready to go. It’s just that HUD [Department of Housing and Urban Development] has ... to put a checkmark to allow us to assume the loan.”

Radow said ShoDeen took out a $12 million HUD loan a year ago on the Covington apartments, 1690 Covington Court, St. Charles, and that loan has to be assumed before the property can change hands.

“It’s a day or two or three,” Radow said, before the sale will be final.

Radco bought another ShoDeen apartment complex, Brittany Court, 390 Brittany Court, Geneva, in February for about $27 million, Radco’s owner said.

Radow said the company renamed Brittany to Ashford at Geneva and will rename Covington to Ashford at St. Charles.

Covington Court has 208 apartments, and Brittany has 225 units. Shodeen built both apartment complexes in 1987 and managed both, company officials said.

Radow said the company

owns about 4,000 apartments in Illinois, Georgia and Indiana.

“We think we’re buying it at a value, and we see the tremendous upside in both communities,” Radow said of the local purchases. “They have not been upgraded in many years. We are going in there and doing improvements to improve quality of life in both properties. And we think that the market is going to embrace those changes.”

Radow estimated the company would invest about $2 million in each apartment complex.

So far at the Ashford at Geneva, Radow said they renovated the clubhouse and added a fitness center, in addition to doing upgrades in individual apartments.

Radow said these two purchases are the company’s first in the current cycle. The company developed two condominium towers in Chicago in 2003 and 2004, the 37-story Riverbend on the Chicago River and the 16-story Prairie house across from Soldier Field.

In a news release from ShoDeen, the local development company states the sale will allow it to focus on new luxury apartment developments in Geneva, Aurora, Elgin and DeKalb.

ShoDeen officials sent a premature announcement Friday that the Covington sale was completed, later withdrawing the statement because the sale is pending. ShoDeen officials would not comment on the pending sale until it is completed, a spokesman said.

ST. CHARLES â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The St. Charles Police Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s patrol officers and sergeants will receive a raise this year and the next three years under new agreements recently approved by the St. Charles City Council.

This week, the council unanimously approved a fouryear agreement that gives patrol officers a 2.75 percent increase for each fiscal year of the contract, which is effective from May 1, 2013, to April 30, 2017.

The pay increases â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which also include boosts to the uniform allowance and the field training officer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; cost about $722,600, according to city documents.

Friday, Sugar Grove Police said they had received reports of burglarized vehicles from five residents in the Windsor Pointe subdivision.

By JONATHAN BILYK aY`cpb7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd Traditionally, when the calendar flips past Memorial Day, motorists expect to receive some relief at the pump, as fuel prices retreat from the expected jump into the beginning of the summer vacation season.

This year, however, many motorists have encountered something far different at service stations in Kane County and elsewhere in the Chicago area.

In the past week, rather than relaxing, the price of gasoline has surged to near record heights in northeastern Illinois and in other regions around the Great

Lakes.

On Friday, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded in the Chicago area hit an average of $4.42, according to the AAA Motor Club’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Locally, regular unleaded was selling for $4.39 a gallon at most service stations in the Tri-Cities on Friday, according to information reported by fuel price tracking site, Gasbuddy.com.

That marked an increase of more than 7 percent from just one week ago, when gasoline cost $4.12 a gallon, according to AAA. And it is just short of the record high of $4.51 a gallon recorded at the end of March 2012.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, said he understands that the price spike would leave many motorists perplexed. While some historical price spikes have been tied to the price of crude oil, this increase is different.

“This is all about refining, refining, refining,” DeHaan said.

DeHaan said some local refineries have reduced production to allow for maintenance, while others have struggled to bring their production up to peak.

That has, in turn, pinched supply in the Great Lakes region, explaining why of the 20 U.S. metro areas reporting the highest gas prices, all but

four are in Illinois and nearby states.

DeHaan noted that the Chicago metropolitan area’s average gas price stands 79 cents per gallon higher than the national average of $3.63 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Pete Mancini, president of St. Charles-based fuel distributor and gas station operator, Parent Petroleum, said the situation is out of line with historical norms.

“This situation, this Chicago market, it’s just a mess right now,” Mancini said.

DeHaan and Mancini said they expect additional fuel supplies to enter the Chicago market in coming weeks, which should begin to push prices down.

Friction in St. Charles

Summer construction season is known to raise tensions for motorists, but it’s more than just drivers whose blood pressure has spiked around St. Charles lately.

An apparent misunderstanding about how traffic improvements near St. Charles North High School would be funded has created friction between the St. Charles City Council and the District 303 school board. Several members of the City Council believe they were misled about how much the school district would be willing to pay toward $500,000 worth of the work – per a proposed intergovernmental agreement – on a traffic light and righthand turn lane at the high school off Red Gate Road.

That price tag being lower than the total cost of the project, which is about $570,000.

Ed Bessner and Jo Krieger were among the St. Charles aldermen who voiced concerns this week about potential long-term ramifications of a school board committee’s vote to fund $125,000 toward the improvements, as opposed to meeting the city at $250,000.

While the communication about the intergovernmental agreement clearly was not ideal, city leaders should tone down their grumbling about the school district.

If District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann or other representatives of the school district informally led the city to believe the district

would pay more toward the improvements, that is regrettable. But the city made a rushed assumption before the school board process had run its course. The city approved the construction contract on April 1, long before the school board’s recent deliberations.

From our perspective, the city ought to take the lead on the traffic improvements in St. Charles, regardless of whether they are near the high school. School board members make a valid point that some of the added traffic bolstering the case for these improvements stems from the city’s Red Gate Bridge addition.

At this point, it appears too late for a compromise that would satisfy both parties. The city’s Government Operations Committee on Monday grudgingly approved the revised agreement with the school district. The school board is expected to give final approval of the revised plan Tuesday.

The question becomes – how will the relationship between the city and the district be affected going forward?

St. Charles residents deserve a school board and city council that can maintain a professional, working relationship and keep each other in the loop when their needs intersect. City leaders should rise above any lingering hard feelings and use this experience to improve future communication and collaborations.

I hope that all residents of Batavia who are parents of high schoolers request a copy of the questionnaire that the kids were made to fill out. I think it’s very important to note all the questions that were on that survey. Also, since the new administration is coming in and there are new school board members, I hope they will look at this whole issue of student privacy and questionnaires and re-evaluate the position they took at their last meeting. I do work at the school, and they throw so much food away. And now with this hot lunch program. Kids don’t eat this stuff. And now they’re going to be throwing money away. And who is paying this?

This is a message for Chris Lauzen, county board chairman. Back off on all your new positions and hires you are proposing. The county is doing fine without all the bureaucracy to deal with.

Over 160,000 soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy, and over 3,000 young Americans, many just teenagers and in their early 20s, died. It represented the largest sea, land and air operation in the history of mankind, and it marked the beginning of the end of Nazi tyranny across Europe, and the victorious turning point of the allies in World War II. But what is the difference that D-Day makes to us today?

When we remember, we reaffirm the values of self-sacrifice, duty and comradeship for which the veterans of D-Day fought and, in some cases, died. But none of our major political figures ... made mention of this important day.

And you have to look hard to find it in our news media. And I bet the event and its importance wasn’t mentioned by our teachers in the classroom.

What difference does remembering D-Day make? It depends on our view of the value these young men showed 69 years ago to ensure our freedom today.

What’s the criteria?

It is tragic that a young girl has cystic fibrosis and needs a lung transplant. The national donor networks have strict guidelines to make sure that the donation goes to the best recipient.

According to the guidelines for an organ donation, she is not old enough for a transplant. Now the politicians are pressing for the federal government to get involved in this lung transplant.

This week, a federal judge ordered the National Donor Network to change its policy and admit the young girl and another juvenile, on the donor list. Is this the start of Obamacare, where judges determine who makes the donation list?

Why would anyone want to donate an organ if that organ is not going to the neediest, but to the one with the best political and judicial connections?

Teacher retires from St. Patrick’s after 43 years

By NICOLE WESKERNA en\jb\ieX7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd ST. CHARLES – After 43 years of teaching at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in St. Charles Township, Ken Cordier is retiring.

Friday was his last day of work, and the school honored him following Mass. He said in 43 years, there was at least one thing that hasn’t changed.

“This school, it truly is a family here,” he said. “You get to know not only the students, but their parents. We all have the same goal, and that is to do the best we can with the students we encounter.”

Cordier, who has taught

eighth-grade reading, literature and social studies, said his job at St. Patrick’s Catholic School was his first when he graduated from Northern Illinois University.

To put 43 years into perspective, Cordier pointed out that students from his first graduating class now are 57 years old, and there are Ken Cordier three teachers at St. Patrick’s Catholic School who were Cordier’s former students.

He said while the decision to retire wasn’t easy, he looks forward to possibly traveling and spending time with his

Cordier spent 35 years working alongside his wife, Mary Ellen Cordier, who retired six years ago after teaching religion to junior high students.

While teaching, Cordier spent some time as the school’s assistant principal, taught physical education and helped coach basketball.

He said a number of his students are the children of his former students, as well.

He suggests that new teachers or anyone who is thinking about becoming a teacher is to follow the advice from Ralph Waldo Emerson, who is quoted in a poster that

hung in the back of Cordier’s classroom saying, “The secret of education is respecting the student.”

“I’ve always found that to be true. ... I think young people should enjoy teaching,” he said. “The more you give, the more you get back.”

Principal Joseph Battisto said Cordier has taught about 2,500 children during his tenure.

“First, from an education standpoint, he truly has the respect and admiration of everyone he has worked with,” he said. “And he’s greatly respected at the parish and diocese levels.”

JOLIET – Libertyville junior catcher Evan Skoug admittedly charted the flight of his tide-turning grand slam in Friday’s 4A state baseball semifinal against St. Charles East.

How couldn’t he? Skoug’s fourth-inning shot blazed out of Silver Cross Field and bounced off the top of a pickup truck parked beyond the right field fence. It was a no-doubter with two strikes that ultimately provided the winning runs in a 9-6 Wildcats win.

The Saints watched the trajectory, too, but instead of gawking, they did something else. They kept swinging.

On a day that stil could rank among the most memorable in the school’s athletic annals – Did you hear about what the softball team did downstate? – East left in defeat but didn’t lose its resolve.

“Everybody was just trying to stay upbeat,” senior left fielder Joe Hoscheit said. “I know it was tough after that grand slam kind of took the wind out of our sails a little bit, but we came back and it was just awesome to see us come back and rally after that.”

Skoug’s grand slam punctuated a five-run Libertyville fourth that provided the Panthers (28-11-1) with a 7-1 cushion. East (27-12) immediately responded with four runs in the top of the fifth, with Anthony Sciarrino opening the rally with a single.

“We knew they were tough,” said Skoug, who hit his eighth homer, “but we knew we had to be confident and not let down.”

Entering Friday, East’s largest margin of defeat was four runs, accomplished three times. One of those instances was May 6, when Neuqua Valley senior right-hander Cody Coll blanked the Saints in a two-hit road shutout. East will meet Neuqua Valley for third place at 3 p.m. today.

Starai entered the tournament 10-1 with a 0.54 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 78 innings, and is likely to pitch again today despite a late relief outing in a bid to keep the deficit at 7-5.

Naturally, East would rather have another shot at Libertyville’s Wildcats, but Neuqua Valley will suffice, especially given the way the first meeting went.

“That was probably one of our worst games of the year,” Hoscheit said. “We were really sluggish, didn’t hit the ball, make the plays. That was a rough game. So I mean, if we come back and bounce back and forget about [Friday] – I know it’s going to be tough – but it would be good to go on top and be the last team that wins in the Upstate Eight.”

“You’re a Fighting Saint!” one man implored after she fouled off one of the five, twostrike pitches she spoiled.

The pleading shouts from the Saints’ dugout proved near impossible to ignore. Her teammates begged her to keep battling Barrington pitcher Keenan Dolezal, to summon every ounce of courage she had and deliver the St. Charles East softball team a moment it would never forget.

The senior obliged.

Lorenzini ended an excruciating, battle of wills with Dolezal by cranking a full-count pitch to deep center field for a two-run, game-winning double as East rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory Friday against Barrington in an IHSA Class 4A state semifinal.

The Saints will take aim at the first state championship in program history at 5:30 p.m. today at the EastSide Centre against Minooka.

Lorenzini took a tentative cut on the second strike of the at-bat. It wasn’t exactly confidence-inspiring, but she located her moxie – and her swing – when the Saints had no margin for error.

“Honestly, I was just trying to block everything out because there were like a million people screaming and screaming,” Lorenzini said. “I heard my teammates say ‘We believe in you, we believe in you!’ I have great teammates that are going to pick me up when I’m down, and I was down at the beginning of the game.”

Lorenzini, East’s No. 3 hitter, was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts before her blast just beyond the reach of Barrington center fielder Tess Bolger, who scurried back on the ball in an admirable act of defensive desperation.

East (33-5) had the bottom of its order due up in the seventh after squandering some quality chances earlier, so matters appeared bleak.

But junior Sarah Collalti smacked an opposite field double to left to lead off the inning, and East’s dugout

perked up in resounding fashion.

Lofgren, who entered the game tied for second fewest at-bats (35) on the team this season, was surprised to see herself injected into such a crucial situation.

“I am,” Lofgren said. “I’m really, really surprised, and I’m really happy that I was able to aid my team and get this far. It’s really exciting.”

Perez followed with an RBI single to trim Barrington’s advantage to 2-1 before Hupe’s fielder’s choice grounder became the second out, leaving two aboard for Lorenzini.

After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Lorenzini notched arguably the biggest hit in program history, sending the Fillies to their first loss since a 15-inning defeat to Marengo on April 20, and leaving

veteran Barrington coach Perry Peterson to deal with a crushed group of teenagers.

“We tried to remind our kids that the other team earned it. They earned it fair and square,” said Peterson, whose team will play York for third place today. “They got four hits in the last inning and did what was needed to be successful and win. Congratulations to St. Charles East. We’ll move on. There’s another game tomorrow.”

Saints junior pitcher Haley Beno (22-4) turned in an outstanding outing, especially given Barrington’s reputation as an offensive juggernaut. Arkansas-bound Barrington third baseman Loren Krzysko notched a two-out, RBI single in the sixth for the game’s first run, and the Fillies’ second run came on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Aside from that, Beno stood tall, scattering five hits and benefiting from an errorless afternoon by the Saints’ defense.

Despite the Saints’ lofty record – and a 19-game, midseason winning streak – Barrington arrived in East Peoria as a clear favorite to win the state title. Not in Horan’s book, though.

“I know that team’s got 54 home runs, blah blah blah – my 13 kids are winners, and I’ll take them anywhere,” Horan said.

After the game, emotions naturally ran high for the Saints, and that held especially true for Lorenzini.

St. Charles will soon be far in her rearview mirror.

Lorenzini plans to relocate to Arizona – where she was born and her mother is moving – and attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Earlier this week, Lorenzini said she hoped to walk-on Grand Canyon’s team, but the coach wasn’t sure there would be a spot.

After a hit that will go down in Saints history, Lorenzini wasn’t ready to give up on her college softball prospects.

“I’ll send her another email,” Lorenzini said.

EAST PEORIA – It wasn’t a shutout, Haley Beno didn’t strike out 15 batters and the junior right-hander wasn’t on the field when the game ended.

Given the way Friday’s 3-2, St. Charles East win against Barrington in an IHSA Class 4A state softball semifinal played out, it’s understandable if Beno’s wasn’t the first name giddy Saints fans chattered about on their way back to the hotel.

But any softball fans who did even a smidge of research on Barrington’s offense knows that Beno did herself proud in the biggest game of her career.

Until tonight’s state championship game, that is.

“My mindset was just to stay focused [and not worry about] what they’ve done and about how great of hitters they are and just try to throw my game,” Beno said.

Beno put five goose eggs on the scoreboard to start the game, and was starting to flirt with shutting out the Fillies’ dynamite offense for the first time all season.

That didn’t quite materialize, but Beno limited Barrington to single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings, keeping the slow-starting Saints offense within reach.

When the Saints’ bats came to life in the nick of time – culminating with senior Olivia Lorenzini’s two-out, two-strike, two-run double to end the game – it only mattered because of Beno’s performance.

Barrington arrived in East Peoria with 54 home runs on the season and an absolutely loaded lineup that accounted largely for the Fillies’ hard-tobelieve 35-1 record. East coach Kelly Horan said the Saints didn’t dwell on the Fillies’ run-scoring prowess.

“You can scout as much as you want, and we got some information on all the teams that we play, but we never overdo it, OK,” Horan said. “It always comes down to if we play our game. Haley Beno executed our gameplan fantastically. She didn’t back down. I couldn’t be more proud of her.

“I mean, holy cow. Olivia’s going to get the headlines because that’s a big, old hit, but Haley Beno’s what kept us in the game.”

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab Beno is a heck of a pitcher, as her 22-4 record attests, but it’s still fair to consider her performance against Barrington a pleasant surprise.

Beno isn’t dominant in a prototypical way. The Saints haven’t shut out an opponent in more than a month, and East’s last two opponents before Friday – Glenbard North (six runs) and Downers Grove South (three runs) – each were more productive offensively than the Fillies.

Beno did all the things a pitcher has to do against a superb offense. She threw strikes, changed speeds and locations and saw her defense play rock-solid behind her.

“I was just trying to throw it all around and just mix it up and try to keep them [off-balance],” said Beno, who scattered five singles while striking out three, walking one and hitting one batter.

The two runs Barrington scored both might have been avoidable.

In the top of the sixth of a scoreless game, Fillies standout third baseman Loren Krzysko came to the plate with a runner on third and two outs.

After Horan came to the rubber for a conference, many thought the Saints would intentionally walk or pitch around the Arkansas recruit, but instead, Krzysko notched her 60th RBI of the season when she deposited a full-count pitch to left-center for a single.

The Fillies’ second run in the seventh came on a two-out, wild pitch.

“It was pretty frustrating,” said Beno, icing down her right shoulder after the game. “I felt pretty bad [about the wild pitch], but my offense had me, and they got it right back for me.”

Yes, the offense had Beno’s back for one extraordinary inning.

Beno had theirs throughout the ballgame.

Spartans dash into 3A title game

No. 2 did not come Friday, and it won’t likely be in the cards when the Spartans play Joliet Catholic for the 3A state championship at 11:30 a.m. today.

Dama joined the team as a late-season call-up, used his agility to entrench himself as a defensive regular and then put his head down and ran because that’s what everyone else around him was doing.

To be sure, Friday’s 6-3 victory against Grayslake Central saw the Spartans moving all about well before reliever Andrew Brundage fanned Rams center fielder Matt Loeffl for the final out.

St. Francis (25-11) captured the program’s first state semifinal the only way it knows how.

“Running has always been a big part,” Dama said.

“We’ve got a pretty fast group and everyone’s been good runners, good baserunners, and that’s what keeps us in games. Can win us games.”

Grayslake Central (26-14) struggled to defend that go-go approach during the key sequence of the game.

With one out and runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth, Spartans third baseman Tim Zettinger dropped a deft squeeze bunt down the first-base line.

Coach Rich Janor spotted the infield playing deep in a 1-all game and sensed a chance to capitalize.

Lanky Rams right-hander Jack Spicer threw to first baseman Kyle Clark, but when Clark took his eye off the slightly sinking throw, the ball squirted behind the bag and allowed Josh Croci and Brett Jungles to score.

“After I threw the pitch, I saw it coming. And you know, when we went to field it, it was a great bunt,” Spicer said. “I think I could have had a better throw, and it just

For Zettinger, it was just as simple.

“We practice suicide squeezes all year long,” he said. “It’s been a point of emphasis for our offense. So coach gave me the sign, and after all the practice, I just laid one down.”

A season that will long

be defined by a remarkable run following a subpar start might as well include its share of darts and dashes.

Struggling to find a clearcut catalyst, the Spartans credit their current surge of 19 wins in 22 games to sustaining a pressuring attack and slick defense.

The Spartans overcame rare hiccups in the latter department, as a pair of early errors helped the Rams load the bases in the first and third innings. Grayslake Central emerged only with a run-scoring sacrifice fly from center fielder Loeffl, which tied the game at 1-all in the third.

Janor called the rest of the attack behind righty Jack Petrando (five innings, two runs, one earned) “a little bit of fire, little bit of ice.” Shortstop Jason Sullivan sparked the St. Francis attack with three hits, all singles.

Zettinger added a

run-scoring single to give him three RBIs, but Croci’s double in a three-run fifth was the only tally delivered on an extra-base hit. After edging Kaneland (3-2), Burlington Central (2-1) and Sycamore (1-0) in the regional final through sectional final, respectively, the Spartans aren’t apologizing.

The hits paid off as Grayslake Central brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth. Brundage responded with a strikeout of left fielder Pat Burba to end the threat.

“We’ve been in a lot of tough situations, I think, the entire playoff run, and we had a lot of close games.

I think we just looked at is as we had a good cushion, lead, and we were just trying to get outs out there any way we could,” Jungles said. “Whatever worked is what worked.

We didn’t really get nervous too much, and we just bear down and get the out.”

BURLINGTON, Iowa Tayler Scott was sharp over seven innings and received offensive support from his battery mate, Carlos Escobar, as the Kane County Cougars pulled off a 3-2 win over the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Community Field.

Scott (3-2) surrendered just two runs in his seven frames while scattering eight hits. Burlington (2332) got on the board first in the bottom of the third as Sherman Johnson walked with two outs and took second on a Scott error before scoring on a base hit from Kyle Johnson.

In the fourth, the Cougars (27-31) quick ly knotted up the score as Jeimer Candelario ripped a long home run to right off Alex Keudell (4-2). One inning later, Bijan Rademacher led off with a double and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Marco Hernandez.

That’s when Escobar came through for the first time, dropping a single to shallow left, scoring Rademacher.

Kyle Johnson tied the game once again in the bottom of the fifth with a single to bring home Wendell Soto, but the Cougars reclaimed the advantage in the seventh inning. Hernandez blooped a single to right-center with two outs and scored all the way from first as Escobar smashed a liner to the right-center field gap for a go-ahead triple.

Stephen Perakslis (S, 1) relieved Scott in the bottom of the eighth and worked around a leadoff single. It wasn’t so easy in the bottom of the ninth as Perakslis gave up a hit to Sandy Martinez before walking the bases loaded. He fell behind Wade Hinkle, but Hinkle popped up a 2-0 fastball which Candelario caught in foul territory to seal the victory.

By this time, we should be in midseason form. All the

This is my first full professional season, and from what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard, this is about the time that the soreness would start to settle in a little bit and starts to get into the grind of summer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be good to get those three days for the All-Star break, to get away from the game, get some rest and come back for the second half.

Obviously you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pace yourself since this is about results, but what can you do, if anything, for your arm when you enter this situation?

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no such thing as pacing yourself. I mean, every inning, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 100 percent, as much as you can do. But really, the big thing that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned so far from being a professional is just getting your sleep, staying hydrated, take care of your body.

How much do they trumpet that in college?

Oh, big time. Big time.

You know, with nutritionists and all that deal. Hydration and sleep is the way to go. â&#x20AC;Ś I learned good habits in college, and it just kind of carries over.

Everybody talks about the Big East as a basketball conference, but how did it stack up baseball-wise?

Baseball-wise, we had typically about three good teams every year. Us and UConn were typically good, and kind of everyone else took turns on what year they were going to be. But it was pretty competitive. Not every conference game was a rivalry game for us, but everyone looking up at Louisville was just like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wow.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; We put the bullâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-eye on the back. We always got the conferenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best, so yeah, it was competitive always.

It was only the first week of the season, but how much were you chirping about the [menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] basketball national title?

Oh, heck yeah, of course.

I never bring up Louisville in the locker room, but if someone wants to talk about it, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m more than happy to get in that fight.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it like switching roles, going from a college starter to a long relief guy here?

I mean, in college, I probably averaged seven innings an outing. So it was actually different being toned down to only two, three innings. â&#x20AC;Ś I feel like I could [stretch out]. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think I would lose anything off my fastball between inning one and inning five or six, but I think the next day I would feel it.

Being a lot more sore than usual.

What had been your high-water mark for games before?

Probably last year, I played a full college year, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d say we got about 65 games.

And then I was in [Short-A] Boise for about 40 or so, so probably about 100 is my most.

Cougars reliever Justin Amlung earned accolades as Big East Pitcher of the Year last spring, a few weeks before the parent Cubs drafted him in the 12th round. A right-hander, Amlung was a starter then, and while he may return to that role before long, is now pitching out of the bullpen.

SCC plans brewing SCC and Chicago Catholic League announcement forthcoming

The SCC and Chicago Catholic League schools have an announcement forthcoming early next week, according to Marian athletic director Mike McGovern.

He could not say specifically what will be announced, but the conferences have been talking over the past month about possibly merging.

The SCC will lose seven of its 12 members for the 201415 school year when they move to the Metro Suburban Conference. The remaining schools will be Marian, Montini, Aurora Christian, St. Francis, Marmion (boys only) and Rosary (girls only). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re waiting through the weekend because some people had to go away,â&#x20AC;? McGovern said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll run it by everybody next week, just for everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consideration.

We should be hearing something shortly.â&#x20AC;?

McGovern said it would be a joint announcement. St. Ignatius AD Jim Prunty said earlier this week the CCL had not formally invited the

SCC schools to join, but that discussions had been good. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Basically, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been discussions at this point,â&#x20AC;? McGovern said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We met the other day, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still in the discusison stage. A couple of things have to be cleared up. I think things are going to be very positive for Marian.â&#x20AC;?

The SCC schools also recently received invitations from the East Suburban Catholic Conference for all sports. The discussions with the CCL had options for all sports or for football only.

McGovern said earlier this week the SCC ADs liked the possibilities. If they merged with the CCL for football only, they could get by in other sports as a fiveteam league. The driving force behind the SCC merging with another conference is football. With a five-team league, the ADs would have difficulties finding five nonconference football games.

Aurora Central Catholic, Chicago Christian, Guerin, Immaculate Conception, St. Edward, Walther Lutheran and Wheaton Academy announced last month they were joining the Metro Suburban.

Bears camp coming to Geneva for kids ages 6-14

With former Chicago Bears like Desmond Clark, Allan Ellis, Kris Haines, Al Harris, Jim Morrissey and Mickey Pruitt providing support, Chicago Bears Youth Football Camps will return this summer to 18 northern Illinois locations, including a camp in Geneva at St. Peter School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-26.

Chicago Bears Youth Football Camps provide non-contact instruction to kids from ages 6 to 14 years old. Led by professional coaches and Chicago Bears Heroes, kids learn to run, throw, catch, defend and compete the Chicago Bears way. I know. I’m a mom. I’m one of my kids’ first teachers and know that nothing beats experiential learning. An opportunity to apply theoretical principles to real-world situations doesn’t materialize every day, but April 18, Batavia School District 101 unwittingly handed veteran Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden such an opportunity on a silver platter.

Good teacher that he is, he used it. And now the school board is throwing him under

Because I, a parent of a Batavia High School freshman, also dropped the ball.

Dryden reportedly reminded his students that they had a Constitutional right not to incriminate themselves when completing a 34-question, inclass survey pertaining to social

and emotional issues, which included questions about drug and alcohol use.

He was docked a day’s pay. I suspected there might be a back story. Last week, the Batavia School Board voted to issue a written warning of improper conduct and authorized a notice of remediation against Dryden.

Board member Jon Gaspar, who cast the sole no vote, gets my vote, the next time he runs.

Because if I examine information this board cites as evidence about this particular incident, I see insubstantial grounds for such a reaction.

Instead, I see a teacher who did right by his students when he discovered that very specific, personal questions were being asked – when the answer sheets bore their names.

Some parents, myself

included, were informed in a vaguely-worded email that our children would be taking a “survey” that “evaluates their social-emotional perceptions.” Not all BPS parents are enrolled in this email communication system. Some who are didn’t seem to receive it. Moreover, nowhere in this email about a survey – which, by definition, is a “gathering of a sample of data or opinions considered to be representative of a whole” – is any mention made of the very specific, personal nature of the questions to be asked. Had there been, I would immediately have opted out, using the embedded link. I intended to learn more.

I was busy recovering from an accident, but no matter, I’ve learned my lesson. I will immediately examine and act on

every BPS-101 communication I receive. I won’t make this mistake again. I dropped the ball.

John Dryden didn’t. He knew a survey was coming.

But when he saw the named surveys – which Noah says included questions like, Did you use drugs this week? Did you drink alcohol this week? and Did you feel sad this week?

– and recognized the potential implications of answering them, he reminded students about their studies regarding Fifth Amendment rights.

Why would such a sensitive assessment ever be considered appropriate, let alone viable, outside a relationship with a trusted clinician? And be conducted without written parental consent?

There’s no doubt that when it comes to food, music, movies and literature we’ve benefited from some pretty fortuitous pairings. But you may be surprised to learn that there are a number of classic combinations of the garden variety as well.

Companion planting has been a practice used by farmers and home gardeners alike for hundreds of years to boost beneficial insect populations, decrease pests, and increase plant yields.

Whether it is simply a taller plant offering shade to its neighbor, or a trailing plant like nasturtium that covers the ground while its companion grows upright, gardens are generally healthier, and arguably more attractive, when

In addition to these spatial interactions, there are some specific associations that have historically proved useful.

Tomato and basil: That’s right! Not only do these two get on famously at the dinner table, they prefer each other’s company in the garden as well.

Basil plants repel whiteflies and aphids, attract bees for pollination, and planting them close by is even thought to improve tomato flavor, health, and yield. The plants have similar growing requirements and to top it all off, harvest time will be a cinch.

French marigolds and melons: In addition to adding a cheerful pop of color along the borders of your veggie patch,

French marigolds have a root system that can ward off nematodes. Planting near melons, whose roots are susceptible to nematode infestation can be advantageous.

They are easy to grow, both the leaves and blooms are edible, and they act as a deterrent to cucumber beetles, (as well as squash bugs, aphids, and whiteflies).

Corn, beans, and squash: Known as the Three Sisters, this venerable grouping has its roots in the Iroquois legend that each of these three will only thrive when planted together.

The corn stalk acts as a support for the climbing bean vines, the beans fix nitrogen in their roots improving the fertility of the soil, and the low-growing squash shades out weeds and conserves soil moisture.

And they are nutritionally compatible as well – the

corn provides carbohydrates, the beans supply protein, and the squash is rich in vitamins.

So, when you take up the hoe and set about planting your rows this season, keep some of these dynamic duos in mind. Companion planting is a simple and inexpensive small scale gardening practice, yet the beneficial relationships among plants can be a key factor in creating a flourishing backyard community.

The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment applies to programs that receive funding from the U.S. Department of Education. It intends to protect the rights of parents and students by seeking to ensure that schools “obtain written parental consent before minor students are required to participate in any ED-funded survey … that reveals information concerning … mental and psychological problems potentially embarrassing to the student and his/her family; sex behavior and attitudes; [and] illegal … self-incriminating … behavior,” etc.

I never gave written consent. I called the United States Department of Education. A press office spokesman asked whether the survey was funded in whole or in part by U.S. Department of Education funds.

Where did the reported $8,000 it cost to implement it come from?

In this case, federal funds were not used, school officials said.

Whether BPS intended to use the sensitive information gathered for anything but the project of identifying students who might need emotional support – a worthy intention given recent student suicides here – isn’t the point.

We’d be naive to ignore the reality that sensitive information sometimes turns up later, regardless of original intentions to keep it confidential.

Dryden obviously isn’t naïve. But he realized that some of his students might be and said what needed to be said. I applaud him for that.

Some of Dryden’s past comments, documented by the district and reportedly upsetting to students, concern me greatly – and earned school board warnings.

If such concerns remain, they should be addressed, but that’s not the issue, now.

Should someone have stood up for our kids April 18? Yes. Should “surveys” like this be

done without written parental consent? No. Just because it’s presently legal, in certain circumstances, doesn’t make it right.

And just because you fear that someone else’s courage to step up and care for our children makes it appear that you somehow care less, dear BPS folks, doesn’t make that person’s action warning-worthy – let alone wrong, no matter who he is. Mistakes were made here, but not by John Dryden.

Not this time.

This has been a teachable moment, not just for Dryden’s kids, Batavia, but for each and every one of us. Because to really help our children, we’ve gotta have their trust. They’re watching how we handle this thing. My sense is that everyone involved has good intentions. But good intentions aren’t enough.

Nor is Jack Barshinger’s recent suggestion that steps will be taken to “ … increase parental awareness and transparency when gathering data about sensitive issues such as

mental health or substance abuse issues.”

A reversal of the school board’s decision, however, would help rebuild that trust, and allow us all to refocus our precious energy and resources on that thing that I believe you really wanted to do in the first

Summer TV: 12 shows worth mentioning Well, Walter, how does your story end? It feels like the whole world finally caught up on the back episodes of the best TV show around, so we’re ready to do this, yo.

By HANK STUEVER K_\ NXj_`e^kfe Gfjk Summer’s here, and the time is right for ... ? Remaining absolutely still, as always. There’s plenty of television to choose from, but that whole notion of summer being the most provocative and experimental TV season is losing its luster.

The new crop of reality shows instead feel like those old, toasted copies of Us Weekly you find in a rental cabin, but you page through them anyhow. Documentaries (especially from HBO and PBS’s “POV” series) remain the soothing balm, like Noxzema on a sunburn. In any event, most of us are just here so we can get a good spot for the real fireworks – “Breaking Bad” starts its last season Aug. 11.

Here’s my annual quick-hit guide to what looks interesting. My recommendations are so noted.

Sunday, Sunday

1. “The Killing” (recommended) – Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC The show’s stars look just as shocked as you are that this moody, elongated crime series is back for another season.

Last week’s engaging and corrective return episode set Linden and Holder (the superb Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman) off on a grisly new serial-killer case, in which a death-row inmate (rejoice, pirates – it’s Peter Saaaaarrrrrsgaaaaard) might not be the one responsible for beheading his wife. I’m half-happy the show is back and hope it doesn’t violate parole.

2. “Dexter” – June 30, Showtime It’s the beginning of the end for the vigilante serial killer, whose carefully saran-wrapped life started to crumble last season when his sister, Deb, not only learned his dark secret, but also became his accomplice. As the eighth season and final 12 episodes get underway, Deb appears to fall apart, and the question remains: Will Dexter make it out alive?

3. “Ray Donovan” (recommended) – June 30, Showtime This new drama from “Southland” creator Ann Biderman stars Liev Schreiber as a tough-guy fixer/cleanup/PR miracle man in Hollywood who must now deal with his menacing father (Jon Voight), who’s just been released from prison. The pilot episode is taut and

4. “The Bridge” (recommended) – July 10, FX Very loosely based on a Swedish/Danish crime series about two detectives of different nationalities pursuing a serial killer on either side of a shared border.

5. “The Newsroom” – July 14, HBO After last summer’s (deserved!) critical drubbing, Aaron Sorkin’s cable news drama is back with the sorta-promise of a cure for its characters’ explosive logorrhea. (That insipidly pompous “desert” promo for the series that HBO aired last Sunday doesn’t bode well for what’s ahead, however.) I couldn’t be more skeptical, but it is my sworn duty to keep an open mind for two or three episodes.

6. “The White Queen” – Aug. 10, Starz A florid sudsing of the “War of the Roses” power grab in pre-Tudor England, courtesy of Philippa Gregory’s historical novels. The first two episodes prove that the catchall “it’s complicated” has been with us a long, long time. And there seems to be plenty of fabric softener in this version of the 15th century – even the laundry looks sexy.

7. “Breaking Bad” (recommended) – Aug. 11, AMC.

8. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” (recommended) – July 17, TLC Reality TV’s easiest target returns for another delightful season of your critical rejection and snooty predictions of the cultural apocalypse. Which can only mean that I must once more play the contrarian and root for the Honey Boo Boo child, Alana Thompson, her mother, June, and the rest of the tribe. Because I recognize their savvy.

9. “Mistresses” – Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC ABC’s vacuous summer steamer follows the travails of four women (including Alyssa Milano and “Lost’s” Yunjin Kim) who seem determined to keep aghast advice columnists in business. It’s one lust-filled bad decision after another.

Interesting that not a one of them is technically a mistress, but don’t nitpick it too much; just let it fog up your windows.

10. “Honey Do” – June 17, TLC This TLC show sends a crew of handsome(ish) handymen to the homes of long-suffering wives who cannot get their layabout husbands to complete even the simplest tasks – replacing old toilet seats, fixing dimmer switches, etc. The first thing the handymen check off the list? Their shirts.

11. “Below Deck” – July 1, Bravo Believe it or not, Bravo has come up with a reality show that isn’t about real housewives or real-estate agents.

It’s about the crew of a luxury yacht, working to meet their high-end clients’ every need while screaming and crying in the galley. Everyone looks miserable in the process, even the rich. Viewers, let’s use our collective mental powers to summon a sandbar.

12. “Blood and Oil” – June 18, Discovery I’m completely Alaska’d out, so I’m glad to see Discovery turn its attentive knack for chronicling the lives of gritty get-richers to the current oil boom in the lower 48. Here we meet the members of the argumentative (and camera-craving) Cutter clan in Ohio, who are trying to stave off bigger oil companies and keep their family-run operation in the black.

Dear Abby: I have been with my boyfriend, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ned,â&#x20AC;? for almost two years. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m 19 and we have lived together since we started dating. Delusions may persist for years or disappear in weeks Dear Doctor K: I hear the phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re delusionalâ&#x20AC;? used so casually. But what does it mean when someone is really, clinically delusional?

Dear Reader: If I told you that I could substitute for Derek Jeter at shortstop for the New York Yankees, you could fairly call me delusional. (Actually, it might be a good thing if I could convince the Yankees to do that: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a Boston Red Sox fan, and my presence in the Yankee lineup would surely improve the chances of the Red Sox.) A delusion is a false belief that is based on an incorrect interpretation of reality. A person with delusional disorder will firmly hold on to a false belief despite clear evidence to the contrary.

Delusions can be caused by mental illnesses called psychoses. These include schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Delusions also can occur in degenerative brain conditions, particularly Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease.

Delusions often are beliefs that could not possibly be true. If I believed that I were Joan of Arc, or that the moon was going to smash into the Earth tomorrow, those would be delusions.

Delusions also can be about something that is not happening but that could occur in reality.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The CIA could really be tapping my telephone, for example: I have a phone, and the CIA has the ability to tap it. If I devoutly believed that the CIA was tapping my phone, yet couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give you a plausible explanation for why it would want to do that, I would likely be delusional.

In a condition called delusional disorder, a person with otherwise normal thinking continues to hold one very focused delusion. I might be functioning perfectly normally and expressing no strange thoughts ... except the repeated belief that Tony Bennett was going to ask me to sing with him at a benefit concert in the near future.

There are several types of delusions often seen in delusional disorder (and other types of psychosis): s %ROTIC DELUSION OF A SPECIAL

loving relationship with another person, usually someone famous or of higher standing. (This kind of delusion is sometimes at the root of stalking behavior.) s 'RANDIOSE DELUSION THAT the person has a special power

or ability, or a special relationship with a powerful person or figure, such as the president or a celebrity. s *EALOUS DELUSION THAT A SEXUal partner is being unfaithful. s 0ERSECUTORY DELUSION THAT the person is being threatened or maltreated. s 3OMATIC DELUSION OF HAVING A physical illness or defect.

In some people with delusional disorder, the delusion may continue for years, though it may vary in its intensity and significance. In other people, the disorder lasts only a few months.

People with other types of psychosis besides delusional disorder often have multiple, loosely connected delusions: The CIA is tapping their phone and someone (the CIA?) has placed wires in their head to control their brain.

Anyone expressing delusions has an serious underlying mental or neurological disorder. Medications and psychotherapy can help. The hardest part is getting someone who is delusional to recognize that he or she may need help.

Find friends who share your moral standards Dr. Wallace: Becky has been my best friend since we were in the first grade, and we are now both 14. We are very close and share all of our secrets. About a month ago, Becky started dating for the first time. She told me that she met Ken at a skating rink and fell madly in love with him. He is 16, and they have gone out with each other about six times.

I have never met Ken, but Becky says that he drinks beer and smokes pot. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all! She said that she, too, has had a beer and tried pot on several occasions.

What should I do? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Suzanne, Baltimore, Md. Dear Suzanne: I agree that you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t nag, but you also shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remain silent. Tell her firmly one time that you are disappointed at her recent behavior and encourage her to stop experimenting with alcohol and drugs immediately.

If she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take your advice and wants to bring you up-to-date regarding her alcohol and drug consumption, refuse to listen. Continue to be a friend to her because she needs your steady and positive influence, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t limit your friendship to just Becky. Branch out and find friends who share your anti-drug and alcohol philosophy.

Dr. Wallace: I protest your answer to a 13-yearold boy who weighs more than 230 pounds.

He hit his younger sister because during a disagreement between the

My sister got a whipping for calling me a name, and I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t punished. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mary, Del Rio, Tex. Dear Mary: Your sister was cruel when she called you a name and deserved to be punished, but you also should have been punished.

Both name-calling and â&#x20AC;&#x153;wallopingâ&#x20AC;? are forms of bullying, and both are hurtful. And unless you have a medical condition, you should get on a nutritious, well-balanced diet and lose those extra pounds you are toting around.

At the bridge table, you have lots of opportunities, especially if you have a restless mind that works logically.

If things seem desperate, restlessly look for a lie of the cards that will allow you to get home.

In this deal, for example, South is in four hearts. West leads his singleton club. East wins with his ace and returns the club 10, his highest being a suit-preference signal for spades. So West, after ruffing, shifts to the spade 10, which runs to South’s ace.

Declarer cashes his heart ace, but both opponents follow low.

Should South continue with a low heart, hoping the king falls, or with the heart queen, trying to pin the jack?

After East opens one club, South might overcall one heart or four hearts. One heart will work better if North-South can have an uncontested auction, and especially if they can make a slam. However, since North is a passed hand, a slam is unlikely.

And jumping straight to four hearts might keep the opponents out of four spades.

There are only 14 high-card points missing, so East must have the heart king. But at first glance, South’s next play appears to be a guess. Suppose, though, that he leads a low heart and East’s king drops from an original king-doubleton holding.

It would not help, because East would lead another club, which would promote West’s heart jack as the setting trick. So, South should lead the heart queen, hoping that he pins West’s jack.
