This past week, the Kane County Chronicle hit driveways and newsstands with a slightly revised look.

Readers have been taking notice – on a number of levels.

One woman called me to compliment the paper on its revamped look.

In particular, she liked the larger weather graphics and information on the bottom right of the cover, as well as the more colorful classified section (which actually had begun to transform a bit earlier than last week).

Scott Helmchen, a managing editor for production and design for Shaw Media, said the new look is meant to streamline the newspaper, reducing the clutter so specific features and sections can be found easier.

The changes also have impacted the look of advertisements, as noted

by Kane County Chronicle General Manager Laura Burke.

Laura explained that – in order to improve the design of our publication – we converted the paper to a new “modular” format, meaning (in news-

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar paper lingo) that we’ve gone from a five-column standard page layout to a four-column standard page.

“I expect these changes will enhance our reader experience and help to improve the results we deliver for our business partners,” Laura wrote in a letter to advertisers.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes observed by readers was to the comics section of the paper.

Some old comics were dropped, and some new ones were introduced.

These changes not only impacted the Chronicle, but also other Shaw Media papers. The changes were made in an effort to streamline the design of the comics pages across multiple newspapers.

I’ve received many calls and emails

as a result – which I greatly welcome.

In fact, the feedback that I’ve received – and that other Shaw Media editors have received – is already leading to some changes.

Starting next week, we are bringing back the “Crankshaft” and “Frank & Ernest” comics.

In addition, the Jumble crossword will make its debut.

Meanwhile, the Celebrity Cipher puzzle and bridge column will move to the classified section of the paper, where readers also will be able to find the comic “For Better or Worse.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Conservation district to sponsor water testing program

ST. CHARLES – The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring a water testing program to test private wells for nitrates, various pesticides, and metals.

Three levels of tests are available.

A $45 test kit checks water samples for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, chloride, sulfate, soluble phosphorus, silica and specific conductivity. A pesticide screen for $80 will indicate the presence of triazine herbicides and Lasso, Dual or Harness.

The metals test is $90 and tests for 23 different metals. Water test kits are available from the Soil and Water Conservation District, 2315 Dean St., St. Charles or the Kane County Farm Bureau, 2N710 Randall Road, St. Charles, from Feb. 8 to 19.

Kits must be purchased upon pickup, and results will be sent to the purchaser.

Heidelburg College Water Quality Laboratory in Tiffin, Ohio, will perform the water testing. Results are mailed directly to participants. Results are confidential. For information, call 630-584-7960, ext. 3.

Human-robot interactions topic at STEM Café has Star Wars theme

AURORA – The ongoing invasion of robots into our everyday lives is the topic of the next STEM Café: “R2D2 and You: How

Star Wars Droids are Shaping Robotics and Human Robot Interactions.” The event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Two Brothers Roundhouse, 205 N. Broadway in Aurora. Brianno Coller, a professor in the NIU Department of mechanical engineering, and David Gunkel, a professor in the NIU department of communication, will lead the free talk and discussion.

Whatever happened with the Big Snake?

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Snake was sighted.

Reptile enthusiast that I am, I couldn’t resist stopping by the neighborhood where all this action was taking place.

What I learned from casual conversations was that some folks were afraid to let their kids play outdoors.

I even spoke with one gentleman who tore out several shrubs and replaced them with sod, lest the snake slither over to his backyard.

As I walked around that hot afternoon, one week after the initial sighting, I noted a couple things. One, the temperature was nearly 30 degrees warmer than it had been the day the snake was seen.

Now, most people know that snakes are cold blooded. But what that term really means is, they rely on ambient temperatures to heat and cool their bodies. And, contrary to popular belief, snakes can get too warm.

The day the snake was first spotted, temperatures were in the 60s – great for working on a roof, not so great if your body relies on an external source for heat. The snake in question had needed to be out basking in order to warm its body enough to function.

The week I visited, though, temperatures were in the 90s. While I was foolishly out walking around, baking, the snake was no doubt laying low, waiting for things to cool off a bit.

The other thing I noticed was that, given the habitat of the surrounding

Recently I received an email from a Good Natured reader, Christine Brahm, who lives in Batavia.

As I recall, we were corresponding about a seasonal topic – owls, I believe – but then she asked a summertime question that, even in the midst of winter, still seems to be on many people’s minds: Whatever happened with the Big Snake?

You may remember, in August, Geneva found itself in the spotlight when someone saw what appeared to be a venomous cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus. (Time out for some Latin fun: Agkistrodon means fish hook tooth and piscivorus means fish eater.

What a perfect name for a snake that spends its life eating fish, frogs and other critters that live near water.)

The story goes, a roofer working on a house in south Mill Creek noticed what he described as a large, dark-bodied snake curled up on some mulch.

A photo was sent to the Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn, and the staff there identified the snake in the picture as a cottonmouth. Venomous, for sure, and not normally found in this area.

From there, let’s see, how do I say this? All heck broke loose.

News media were alerted and, as quick as you could say fish-hooktoothed fish eater, reporters descended on the once-peaceful neighborhood.

Mini-cam vans parked and raised their antennas. Glaring TV lights switched on. Microphones in hand, wide-eyed reporters spoke of a very large and potentially deadly snake On. The. Loose.

It didn’t take long for a localized hysteria to break out. Snakes of all types fell under suspicion. A wildlife removal team was called in. Traps were laid in the area where the Big

‘BIG COMMITMENT’

Scouting troop leaders ‘investing years’ as volunteers with organization

asloboda@shawmedia.com For the past several years, Linda Strohschein has carried out a role that, in addition to letting her spend more time with her daughter, has given her an opportunity to watch other girls learn new skills.

She’s a Girl Scout troop leader, now for nearly three dozen middle school students from St. Charles School District 303.

She began leading her daughter’s troop when the girl was in first grade, Strohschein said, noting she wanted to get her daughter involved in something that would help her make friends.

“I love it,” Strohschein said. “I see how much the girls get to learn new skills, things they otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to.”

Her longevity with the group demonstrates the type of dedication leading a troop – whether in Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts – can be.

Tom Babbitt, director of volunteer management with the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, said volunteering with the organization is a “big commitment,” as leaders are “really investing years.”

They put in time into learning the program and deliver it to girls as they age, and they must plan financially and logistically, he said, adding they also work with different sets of parents and girls.

“It’s not the easiest volunteer job you could have,” Babbitt said.

Strohschein, who has received help from co-leaders and other parents, said the time commitment varies by troop.

Hers meets twice a month and aims for at least one service opportunity a month, she said, noting the girls also go camping.

“I think it depends on what the leader is trying to accomplish,” she said.

Similarly, Amy Seyller, who serves the Boy Scouts as the Fox Valley District director, said the Scouting program lets volunteers put in what they want to get out of it.

Planning and running a meeting can take a few hours a week, she said, but others may spend more time with the Scouts, depending on their age and activities.

may opt for optional training. For example, she said, she recently spoke with a leader who – on his own time and money – spent a week in Minnesota to learn about winter outdoor camping.

Andie Romano, assistant cubmaster for Pack 113 of Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles, said she understands if people think a leadership position is too daunting.

“It’s the fear of the unknown,” she

said.

Romano said she volunteered to be

a leader when an increase in membership created a need for one, and she was willing to give it a try.

“I never would have traded any of it,” Romano said, adding it has been “so fun watching the boys grow.”

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is always looking for volunteers to be leaders, Babbitt said.

He said the organization seeks those who are interested in providing a good experience for the girls.

But, he added, there are multiple ways people can engage with the organization.

“We will take volunteers at whatever investment they want to make,” Babbitt said, directing those interested to www.girlscoutsni.org for information.

Well, at first, my wife asked me not to write this. We had a big discussion about it. Finally, she understood what I was trying to do, and actually helped me write this letter to you.

At the time, I’m a hockey player for the Quad City Blues and life is good. But then, it happens…

I develop a painful low back and shooting leg pain.

In my case it comes on suddenly. The pain in my low back and legs gets so intense that I can’t walk, or stand up, I can’t even lift my leg to put on my socks. The shooting pain sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night. I’m afraid that I won’t be able to play hockey if the disability continues.

After considering what the medical doctor told my parents... we decided to look at alternatives.

A friend of my parents recommends they give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some x-rays, and then ‘adjusts’ my spine and my pelvis (he tells me that there’s nerve pressure in my low back and pelvis). The adjustment doesn’t hurt; it actually feels good, relief finally. I can use my low back and legs again; I can even sit without pain! Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, that I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!”

Back to what my wife (at first) didn’t want me to write. It’s that chiropractic is one of the biggest “secrets” in health care. Not far away, in the larger pond complex by the clubhouse, I saw great blue herons, green herons and white egrets – all at once. To have this many animals that eat fish, frogs and other aquatic creatures, in the same place at the same time, indicated there was plenty of food to go around – not just for birds, but for snakes, too. Interesting.

I didn’t see the Big Snake, nor any snake for that matter, on that particular, and particularly hot, day.

Time wore on, and I got busy doing other things, but monitored the situation via Facebook. A number of garter snakes were trapped and removed,

A month or so away from hibernation, these snakes – which typically return to the same hibernaculum, or hibernation location, year after year – were released in an unfamiliar area with little time to acclimate or find shelter for the coming cold weather.

As the garters were being caught and removed, some residents expressed concern that the rodent population would increase.

Which, by the way, is a valid point.

Garters might not be constrictors and aren’t capable of taking down an adult mouse.

But they do a bang-up job feeding on young rodents – especially those that have not yet left the nest.

alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Noting that “this is only the beginning,” Geneva High School senior Kayla Mickelsen stated in an email that her “American Idol” experience was “exceptional.”

Mickelsen, 18, reached the top 51 of the show before she was eliminated in an episode that aired Thursday night on Fox. She made it through to the last day of the four Hollywood episodes after earning a trip by winning her “golden ticket.” The top 24 advanced out of Thursday’s episode to the next round.

“Living in hotels with people who shared the same passion as me, getting to sing all the time, late nights, early mornings, I loved all of it and wouldn’t trade it for the world,” she wrote. “Due to my lack of air time and being back in Illinois, part of me feels like it didn’t happen... but I keep having to remind myself it did. I’ve accomplished more than I thought was possible a year ago today.”

When she earned her “golden ticket,” she received attention for calling herself an ice cream scooper, since she works at Graham’s Chocolates in Geneva. She also works at Nobel House, and she wrote that she soon will be performing there, starting on Feb. 17.

On Thursday’s episode, during what she called the “Green Mile” show, her air time was brief. She was shown receiving the bad news, but her performance was not aired. She wrote that she sang “Anything Could Happen,” by Ellie Goulding. She added that she performed at The Dolby other resident responded that the neighborhood doesn’t have a rodent problem, but rather a snake problem.

Also of note, it was learned that the photo submitted to Willowbrook wasn’t actually taken at the scene. It was an image taken from the Internet.

The days turned into weeks, but there were no more reports of a large, dark snake in the area.

In hopes of preventing future reptile-inspired panics, I contacted my friend Trish Burns, who manages Peck Farm Park in Geneva. We put together a program on snake identification and scheduled it for late October.

No one signed up.

Since then, the weather has cooled considerably. The snakes in our area, no doubt including the Big One in Geneva, are hibernating ‘til spring.

So what kind of snake do I think it was? Well, without a photo or other direct evidence, we can never be 100

And I think that everything happens for a reason, and maybe this show wasn’t what was best for me as an artist.”

Mickelsen wrote hearing the news that she had been eliminated was difficult.

“The ‘no’ hurt so bad because throughout the entire process, I was given nothing but praise on my performances, especially my ‘Green Mile’ performance,” she wrote. “The judges had nothing but compliments to give me at my final judgement.”

Mickelsen wrote that she will be rooting for Bourg. Also, she said, one contestant, Sara Sturm, likely will be her roommate at Belmont University in Nashville. She added that the journey “doesn’t end here.”

“Honestly, I think this is only the beginning,” Mickelsen wrote. “I have a few things I’m working on and high hopes for the future.” percent positive. People can, and do, release things that are not native to our area.

But given the nearby aquatic habitat, the available food, and the knowledge of what is normal and usual for this area, I’d have to say the critter that caused the stir was none other than Nerodia sipedon, our very common northern water snake.

For what it’s worth, I’d very much like to return to the Mill Creek area this spring, to see just what sorts of snakes I can find.

Marlene Ann Chouinard, 81, of St. Charles, Illinois, passed away on Jan. 24, 2016, at Halina’s Residential Home Care after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Marlene was born in Elgin, Illinois on March 17, 1934, to William and Jeanette (Fehrman) Buhmann. She lived in the Fox Valley area for her entire adult life.

She graduated from Elgin High School and was employed as a telephone operator at Illinois Bell. Marlene was an accomplished piano accordionist and played professionally with a dance orchestra at clubs and weddings in the Elgin area. She married Gerald Chouinard on May 12, 1956. They had four children.

Marlene was a volunteer at St. Patrick’s School in St. Charles as a playground lunch monitor, and also with the Humane Society of Northern Illinois for their fund drives. She loved her dogs and cats and showed her Great Dane and Himalayan cats at regional shows.

GENEVA – Just off Route 25, the homes of the Fox Run subdivision stand atop the former site of the Illinois State Training School for Delinquent Girls.

The school was open from 1894 to 1978. Its cottages, infirmary and school have since been bulldozed – but its history and stories of delinquent girls and attempted escapes continue to fascinate.

The Geneva History Museum, 113 S. Third St., is offering a glimpse into the lives of the girls who lived there, with the Friday opening of its new exhibit, “Who Was Sadie Cooksey?” told through the photography and research of the late Maggie Foskett.

Sadie Cooksey died in 1904 at age 20, buried in the cemetery – which is still there – along with 22 other girls and 33 infants.

“The girls lived in a 9-by-7-foot room with an iron cot, a chair and a desk,” Emma said, standing near an exhibit illustrating the starkness of their lives.

Also featured in the opening of the exhibit was guest speaker Linda Tart, who lived at the girls’ school for a year

Hoscheit receives Charlemagne Award

St. Charles Chamber of Commerce grants award to those with a history of community service

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – City resident John Hoscheit – who in the last year received statewide recognition and had a forest preserve named after him – received another honor Friday, this time from the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

The organization bestowed him with a lifetime achievement award during its 94th annual Charlemagne Awards Dinner at the Q Center.

Hoscheit, who moved to St. Charles as an eighth-grader, said he was lucky both to grow up and to raise his family there with his wife of 30 years.

“We’ve taken more from the community than we’ve given back,” he said.

The Charlemagne Award honors individuals with a history of service to the community.

Hoscheit is its 58th recipient since

its creation in the 1960s, according to a list of past winners.

He noted he was looking at the list earlier.

“To be recognized in that group is just unbelievable,” he said.

Hoscheit, a Kane County Board member since 1996, also has the distinction of being the county’s longest-serving president of the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission. His 12-year tenure ended in December 2014.

His accomplishments include acquiring and developing more than 1,400 acres, including River Bend Community Park and Creek Bend Nature Center, both of which are at forest preserves in St. Charles Township.

In 2015, the forest preserve commission renamed the Little Woods Forest Preserve to Hoscheit Woods Forest Preserve, and the Illinois Association of Park Districts awarded him its highest honor.

Engineering staff looking at budget gap suggest a tax increase or stormwater fee

“I’d much rather take the time and energy to identify projects,” Hohmann said. “I do not support the creation of another utility.”

The city has some experience maintaining public utilities, including not only the water and sanitary sewer systems, but also the electrical system.

Holm told aldermen that even with creation of a new utility, stormwater projects still would be contracted out.

This year, the city has $400,000 budgeted for stormwater work.

BATAVIA – Water seeks its own level, and Batavia aldermen are looking to find the place where revenues meet the cost of expensive engineering projects.

When it rains in Batavia, the city has 146 miles of storm sewer lines to channel the runoff into one or more of the 170 existing local detention facilities.

That was not enough to deal with last June’s flooding in some parts of the city.

Should the city’s stormwater system become a public utility, guaranteed a regular revenue stream? Or should stormwater projects be funded individually, as money is appropriated?

These are questions aldermen are grappling with as they consider what the city engineering staff describes as a $1 million annual funding gap between what currently is budgeted and what actually is needed.

Andrea Podraza, a senior civil engineer with the city, and Rahat Bari, the city engineer, told council members at a meeting earlier this week that they can make up the difference either with a property tax increase or with a stormwater fee paid to a public utility.

For a home valued at $120,000, an annual increase of $140 would close the funding gap, the engineers told aldermen. Or, a wider range of property owners could be tapped with an annual fee that would average $4.27 for a typical residential property.

Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen that the choice is a policy decision.

Numerous municipalities in Illinois maintain stormwater utilities, and some charge higher fees than what Batavia is contemplating.

The difference between property tax and utility fee is the distribution of the burden.

Residential properties shoulder the biggest portion of the cost under either

scenario, but much more under the property tax.

Creation of a utility would have industrial and commercial properties paying a larger share, and adds nonprofit groups into the equation.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he believes creation of the stormwater utility would result in a more reliable source of revenue and ensure infrastructure improvements.

Third Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann said he is opposed.

Happy together: Husband and wife join talents in new Geneva business

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Andrew and Ashley Hughes, who own AJ Hughes Design & Build in Geneva, share the work at their new business. Andrew Hughes is the contractor, and his wife, Ashley Hughes, is the designer.

AJ Hughes Design & Build, 27 N. Second St., Geneva, hosted a grand opening in the fall. The business does everything from new residential construction to remodeling, additions and business buildouts, Andrew Hughes said.

“She does all the design, and I do all the construction,” said Andrew Hughes, 33. “I actually had my own business for nine years, Hughes Construction. My wife and I got married over the summer, and we decided to do a new business model with her being a designer. … She also does the furnishings, furniture, artwork, vendors. We handle all of it.”

With them, customers have a onestop shop, Andrew Hughes said.

“On their first consultation … we build them a 3-D model on the computer and show them how it looks on a 60-inch screen,” Andrew Hughes said. “We are doing everything in-house. We want to cater to people in every way possible, so they will know we are the best in the game.”

Andrew Hughes, 33, is a St. Charles native. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 2000. Ashley Hughes, 31, grew up in Yorkville.

The couple met 21/2 years ago when a mutual friend referred his future wife – Ashley Harris – to Hughes Construction for remodeling her former home in Geneva.

“She was very design savvy,” Andrew Hughes said. “She had everything picked out and just needed a contrac-

Ashley Hughes also works as a fulltime nurse practitioner with the practice of Dr. Philip Branshaw in Batavia.

“I do both,” Ashley Hughes said. “My time as a nurse is a lot more flexible, and that allows me to do this. ... I can work weekends, afternoons and evenings.”

Much of her design work in choosing colors, fabrics, cabinets and other items for the home is self-taught, Ashley Hughes said.

The couple eloped Aug. 11, 2015, getting married under a waterfall at Oneonta Gorge in Oregon, based on a photo they saw on a social media website, Andrew Hughes said.

“I didn’t want to do a big wedding.

She didn’t want to do a big wedding,” Andrew Hughes said. “We said no matter where that is, that is where we are

going to get married.”

They secured a wedding photographer, Jess Hunter, who specializes in elopements, as well as a videographer

and a minister. A video of the wedding is on YouTube at Ashley and Andrew’s Elopement.

“It’s a one-hour climb that has about 100 feet in waist-deep water, and you have climb over a bunch of logs,” Andrew Hughes said. “I carried her dress and my clothes.”

As soon as they got back, Ashley Hughes sold her house because they found another house near Geneva’s downtown to live in – and eventually to remodel.

“We could not tell anyone for a month until the video was ready,” Andrew Hughes said. “We … had a fake housewarming party with her family and my family … and I said, ‘The best way to tell you is everyone keep your mouth shut and see this video for five minutes.’ ” No one was mad about missing the wedding, Ashley Hughes said, because the video made them feel included.

“They did not care that we eloped,” Ashley Hughes said. “They knew I was not a traditional person.”

GENEVA – Geneva police arrested a 44-year-old St. Charles man early Friday morning after he allegedly broke into a home in the 2900 block of Adamson Drive.

John C. Reed was charged with two felony counts of criminal trespassing and resisting a police officer and one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to John C. Reed property, police stated in a press release.

Police were dispatched to the home at 5:28 a.m., after Reed was seen breaking a window to get into the residence, the release stated. A previous dispatch a few minutes earlier was made in reference to a person, who police later identified to be Reed, walking down the

street requesting assistance, stating, “Help, help, call 911,” according to the release.

Upon arriving at the home, police found Reed inside the residence allegedly wielding two butcher-type knives, which belonged to the homeowner. Officers told him to drop the knives, and he complied, according to the release. However, after dropping the knives, Reed allegedly began to resist the officer’s commands and struck the officers, according to police.

Eventually, Reed was taken into custody and transported to the Geneva Police Department and later to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for issues unrelated to the arrest, according to the release.

One officer was injured during the incident, the release stated. During the incident, four residents in the home were not injured, and one ran out of the residence before the police arrived, according to the release.

Geneva still a safe community

After a nearly 40-year stretch without a homicide, there have been two murder cases in a three-year period in Geneva.

This week, Geneva resident Julia Gutierrez was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of her husband, Eduardo Gutierrez.

Last year, Geneva resident Shadwick King was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of murdering his wife, Kathleen King, in a 2014 incident.

When such things happen – and, to be clear, Julia Gutierrez is innocent until proven guilty – it can rattle a community and lead to some residents being concerned that a greater danger might exist. But having these two unfortunate instances take place in Geneva does not necessarily indicate the city is any less safe than it was

Geneva police last week noted that there was no danger to the public as the death of Eduardo Gutierrez was being investigated.

Husbands, wives or other family members who believe they might be in danger in a domestic situation should know they have resources that can be of assistance. There are organizations such as Mutual Ground in Aurora or the Community Crisis Center in Elgin.

In an emergency situation, the police can be called. Churches can provide help. Counseling opportunities exist.

Geneva isn’t a more dangerous place because of these two sad situations. People still should be able to feel safe in their own homes.

To the Editor: In response to the “Sound Off” caller who wondered if robins can survive Illinois winters, the answer is yes.

I would suggest that the fact that the caller saw some here recently should have been proof positive that they can handle our frigid winters.

I’m sure Pam Otto – author of the “Good Natured” column every Saturday right here in the Kane County Chronicle – can go into far more detail than me, but I did wonder about that very same question decades ago when, in the middle of a very snowy winter, while sipping a hot drink in a café, I happened to notice a robin in a tree right outside the window.

found out that, yes, they certainly can handle our winters, but not many bother to put up with it.

Apparently, there are always some stragglers every year, but perhaps few people ever see them.

I’m not sure what they eat in the winter, but I’d guess dried berries of one sort or another that are on a variety of trees and bushes throughout this area. (I doubt they find many worms.)

A top-notch facility

I applaud Batavia’s school board for going ahead with the resurfacing of the track and the installation of artificial turf at the stadium. My adult children are long gone from Batavia High School. I am pleased that the board recognizes the importance of these improvements, despite the negative comments by some citizens. I believe the citizens of Batavia want a topnotch facility for our students and realize that the current track and stadium field are both in need of repair and will offer our students a better opportunity with both physical education classes, as well as athletic teams. And, yes, my taxes are high like everybody else. But a community needs strong schools and facilities to meet the needs of the coming generations.

Cognitive reasoning problems

I’m all for paying the million for the Batavia football team, but I think it should go into a trust fund for when they are in their 40s, 50s and thereafter. I also suggest adding another $500,000 for the board members, as they are currently experiencing cognitive reasoning problems.

I’m responding to “Will Trump complain?” Trump says it how it is. He doesn’t sugarcoat it. The economy is not better.

Nothing is really better. The food prices have gone up. Yes, the gas prices have gone down, but – eventually – they will go back up again. Does everyone want the same thing that we have now? Our health insurance – we’re baby boomers, not on Medicare yet – is outrageous. The reason that it’s so high, it’s for the people who are not working and don’t care to work. I think Obamacare should go. If you can’t afford health insurance, then you can’t afford it. And I can’t see McDonald’s getting paid for $15 an hour. What does a nursing assistant get, a CNA? They get way less than $15, and they are doing better than making fries for $15 an hour.

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – With 5.5 seconds left in Friday’s rivalry game against Geneva, the Batavia girls basketball team suddenly found themselves on the verge on letting a game slip away despite leading nearly wire-to-wire.

Needing one more big shot in a game filled with them, the Bulldogs got one from point guard Bethany Orman.

Trailing by one with the ball, Orman crossed over her defender and let a left-handed floater go from the paint and watched as the ball swished through the net to give Batavia a 57-56 win over Geneva in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division road game.

“I knew I had to make a quick move and then get to the basket, so I kind of knew what was going on and I’m glad I had enough time,” Orman said of her first career game-winner. “It was so cool. Everyone running out to get me,

against a rival. It was awesome.”

Batavia held the lead for nearly the entire game and opened up a double-digit lead late in the third quarter, but Frazier picked up her fourth foul with 6:09 left in the fourth and the Vikings made a charge in her absence. Geneva opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to seize a 51-50 lead.

Once Frazier reentered with 3:46 left, the two teams traded haymakers back and forth like the finale of a “Rocky’”movie. Frazier converted and a basket and the foul to give Batavia a twopoint lead, then Loberg had a three-point play of her own less than 20 seconds later to put Geneva back on top. The game see-sawed back and forth until Geneva’s Margaret Whitley hit a floater with just over 10 seconds remaining to put Geneva up 56-55. Batavia advanced the ball and called timeout with 5.5 seconds remaining to set up Orman’s game-winner.

“I said, ‘Bethany if you get it, drive it and go. Make a play,’” Batavia head

coach Kevin Jensen said. “Of course I’m glad someone made it but I’m especially glad it was Bethany. There’s not a lot of notoriety there, but she’s one of the best point guards in the area.”

It was sweet revenge for the Bulldogs, who dropped the first meeting against their bitter rivals, a 59-39 defeat on Dec. 18.

“Tonight was kind of the opposite,” Jensen said of their last contest against Geneva. “Last game there was a lot of nervous energy, myself included, and we came out strong but couldn’t catch our wind after awhile.”

Frazier led Batavia with 25 points and seven rebounds, surpassing 1,000 rebounds for her career on the night, while Loberg put together a monster performance of her own with 25 points and 19 rebounds.

The pair were matched up on each other and went toe-to-toe to a draw: Loberg had a double-double midway through the second quarter, while the

shorter Frazier stepped out and hit 3-of-4 3-pointers on the night. “(Loberg) and Hannah go at each other, they’re so tough,” Geneva head coach Sarah Meadows said. “Grace did a nice job in the paint and Hannah did her job on the outside. It was a good battle, it was fun.”

Orman’s clutch floater has a distinct impact on the UEC standings as well, as Batavia (22-5, 10-1 UEC River) pulled even with Geneva (19-4, 10-1) atop the standings with less than a week left in the season.

These two aren’t done, potentially, as Geneva earned the No. 2 seed, while the Bulldogs sit at No. 3 in the postseason with a potential matchup in the sectional championship looming.

“Even before the game, Kevin came over to me and said, ‘No matter what happens, we’ll see each other in two weeks,’” Meadows said. “We know what our goals are. It’s a good matchup, we’re even. It’ll be fun.”

Geneva hands Batavia first UEC River loss

ccasey@shawmedia.com When Jordan Vedder was practicing alley-oops at practice, Geneva coach Phil Ralston told him to get back to business.

Ralston may not have liked seeing it in practice, but a Vedder slam off an alley-oop in Friday night’s rivalry game against Batavia sure made him smile this time.

The dunk that sent the Geneva faithful wild capped off a 15-0 run to propel the Vikings to a big 52-38 win over Batavia in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division matchup.

The loss is the first in the River Division for Batavia.

“I give all the credit in the world to our preparation,” Ralston said. “I don’t think (Batavia) scored off very many of their offensive sets tonight. We were able to read a lot of what they were going to do and so much of that credit goes to the guys at the end of our bench. They’re the ones that got to school at 7 a.m. to go over Batavia’s sets and helped us so much.”

The Vikings (20-4, 6-3 UEC River) did their best to spoil a night where Batavia senior guard Canaan Coffey eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career. After missing his first four shots, his first 3-point attempt of the second quarter found the bottom of the net to give him

1,000-points-even, for his career.

While the Bulldogs wanted that milestone to come with a win, Geneva wasn’t going to let it happen. Batavia (17-8, 8-1) and coach Jim Nazos felt that although a first half looked rather sloppy on the court, his team was alright with the fivepoint deficit at halftime.

But his team may have forgotten the second half started.

Geneva senior Bennett Fuzak made a layup, followed by three consecutive 3-pointers from junior Matt Johnston, and seniors Sean Chambers and Vedder.

Then came the dunk to cap off a run that the Bulldogs never recovered from.

“I just kind of put my finger up for a pass, got it and was able to dunk it,” Vedder said. “We knew we had to come out of the half with energy and make sure we didn’t let them back in the game. I really think we did a good job of that tonight.

This is a really big win for us against a good team in a rivalry game.”

Fuzak led an extremely balanced scoring attack with 12 points, while Johnston, Vedder, Chambers and Brandon Schleicher added seven apiece.

But as balanced as the offense was tonight, very rarely taking a forced or bad look at the basket, it was the defense that was most noticeable. Geneva held the Bulldogs to just 24-percent shooting from the floor (11 for 46).

Coffey was able to find his baskets, here and there, but Chambers came into the game having one job: to contain Coffey.

“He’s a great player and he made a couple shots on me, but that’s expected,” Chambers said. “I think for the most part we kept him in check and that’s what you have to do with great players. If they make a shot, forget about it, and worry about stopping them the next time they have the ball.”

Coffey was held to 13 points on 3 of 14 shooting, but did connect on all four of his free-throw attempts. Nazos knows the loss stings, especially for the humble Coffey, who Nazos said “would have put off the milestone another game to get a win” Friday night. But he also knows that there’s a bigger picture for his team.

“We control our own destiny,” Nazos said. “Sure, we wish we could have played better tonight, but if we get back and have a good week of practice, we’ll be just fine. I know these guys still believe in what we’re trying to do. It’s one loss, but when you give a good team like Geneva openings, they’re going to exploit you and they did that tonight.”

The win also keeps Geneva in the conversation for a conference title, but the Vikings will need some help moving forward. But take nothing away, Friday night was a big win for Geneva.

SYCAMORE – With Brett Bemis on the bench, the Sycamore boys basketball team was missing not only a 6-foot6 presence inside, but a ball-handling option against the press. The Spartans could have used both aspects of Bemis’ game Friday in a 50-33 loss to Kaneland in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division game.

“It hurts, because he gives us another scorer, some size inside, another rebounder,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “It’s not only the scoring we miss, but he does a great job of handling the press and bringing the ball up against pressure, seeing up over top.

We struggled against pressure like that tonight, and he could of done a good job about getting us into our offense.”

Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said his Knights (13-5, 5-1 NI Big 12 East) tried getting the ball to the inside from the start once they noticed Bemis wasn’t playing.

“I thought we played really well,” Conroy said. “I thought we were able to exploit some things because obviously Sycamore was a little short-handed with Brett Bemis on the bench in street clothes. But I thought defensively we

played really well.”

Half of the Knights’ first 16 points came on layups, and they also hit four of their five first 3-point attempts in building a 19-9 lead after one quarter and a 27-11 advantage in the second quarter.

“We’re trying to figure out if we play inside first, the outside shots will start to fall,” Conroy said. “I thought early in the game we did that and I thought that led to our success.”

The Knights shot 8 for 14 in the first quarter but finished the game only 19 for 50. They made 11 baskets in the first half, Sycamore (11-10, 5-4) made only 11 in the game. Kaneland held Sycamore without an offensive rebound until 1:04 was left in the first half. Sycamore also committed 19 turnovers in the game, leading to 17 Kaneland points. Conroy said the team has been looking to convert turnovers into points with its speed since the start of the season.

“That was our discussion as a team at the beginning of the year,” Conroy said. “We didn’t want to just walk it up every time. We wanted to play that way, so it was nice to see that come together for us tonight.”

Ryan David led the Knights with 14, while Dylan Vaca added 12. Teammates Jake Gomes and Mitchell Groen led all players with five rebounds each.

Yorkville bests Kaneland in third meeting of season

After splitting the first two meetings against the Kaneland girls basketball team, the Foxes jumped out early and cruised to a 55-37 victory on Friday night in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division matchup.

“We didn’t have a lot of energy,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

“They’re a good team. We came out with no energy – part of that is literally, we have about 11 kids sick. We’re trying to stay afloat. No excuses, though, we didn’t have the energy.”

The Knights (19-4, 7-4 in NI Big 12 East) beat Yorkville, 42-33, at the Ottawa Tournament in December, but the Foxes (21-2, 12-0) won 48-47 in the first conference meeting on Jan. 15 and locked up the NI Big 12 East championship on Friday.

“We made shots early,” Yorkville coach Luke Engelhardt said. “We haven’t come out of the gates well in the first quarter and we’ve been a little uptight and a lot of the same looks we had today, we’ve been missing. We’ve been having good games with (Kaneland) every year, so it’s nice to get this series.”

Kaneland forward Vanessa Gould finished with a team-high 10 points and 6-foot-2 center Bailey Crimmins finished with nine, but picked up two early fouls in the first four minutes of the game.

After a jumper by Crimmins cut the Yorkville deficit to 5-4 two minutes into the game, the Foxes pushed ahead with a 7-0 run. They went up by double-digits with 30 seconds left in the first quarter and the lead never dropped into single digits the rest of the way.

“There was nothing on the line tonight but pride,” Colombe said. “They had the conference, we couldn’t get it.

Obviously we wanted to win on our home court, but we weren’t going to go nuts at the same time because we knew the (illness) situation we were in.”

Kaneland, which is a No. 3 seed in their regional, has three more regular season games remaining before playoffs – beginning at home tonight against West Aurora. However, Colombe said his team isn’t thinking about the regional tournament quite yet.

“We’ll be preparing for the playoffs, we got people out scouting tonight,” Colombe said. “But as far as the team and the girls, we’re focusing on West Aurora.”

Yorkville, which is a No. 4 seed in the Class 4A Benet Academy Sectional, came into the game already with a share of the conference championship after beating Sycamore 35-22 on Tuesday.

“Today we knew we had to get one more to win it outright and the pressure was off,” Engelhardt said. “You could see the girls were a little more relaxed. If we play comfortable, we can be a tough team.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball team kept its chances of an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title alive with a hard fought 59-52 victory over visiting Larkin on Friday night.

Saints coach Pat Woods was happy with the win but thinks his team has left plenty of room for improvement.

“Obviously, a big win. We’ve got our backs against the wall, just taking it one game at a time,” Woods said. “This has implications as far as state tournament as well as well as staying alive in the conference race. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time and try to peak at the right time.”

In a game of runs, the Saints struck first, scoring the game’s first 10 points.

They led 13-3 after one quarter.

A.J. Hunter also cracked double digits in points for Larkin with 12, while East was able to bottle up highly touted, Division-I recruit Christian Negron who scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter.

Although the home win feels good, East will need to be road warriors to win a UEC River crown. They still face Geneva, Larkin and Batavia in their next three conference games, all away from home.

Ford, Saints stay alive in conference race

Curtis Haug will begin his fifth season as Kane County Cougars general manager, and 24th season with the team, in 2016. Haug has showed continued excitement to work another year, the team’s second, as an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After a couple of extremely successful seasons both on and off the field over the last couple of years, Haug and the Cougars are getting antsy with April 7’s season opener right around the corner. Haug caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat to talk about the upcoming season and some things to look forward to in year two with the Diamondbacks. An edited transcript follows:

Early thoughts on starting year two with the Diamondbacks?

We’re really looking forward to working with them again. They’re awesome to work with. They’re first class people up and down. From (Director of Player Development) Mike Bell to (Diamondbacks Vice President) Bob Gebhart, they are first class and always set the bar high. They are very determined to win throughout the minor leagues at every level, which is really awesome. I’m looking forward to 2016 season because the team below us, Hillsboro, won a championship. So we’re anticipating some good players from Hillsboro and expect to give our fans another great year.

Back from Iowa and ‘Feeling the Bern’ You might say I’m “Feeling the Bern.” I’ve got a sign in the yard, a few T-shirts and cool pins, and, you know it, Bernie stickers on my Subaru. But as Bernie Sanders has said, “Democracy is not a spectator sport” – so I’ve collected signatures in my Batavia precinct on his behalf, recruited folks to head to Iowa with me on three occasions to canvass door-to-door, volunteered at events where he spoke, and, along with my friends, was even asked to be Bernie’s eyes and ears at a caucus in Iowa, Monday night.

What an honor! What a thrill!

And what a bummer that my children weren’t there to experience it with me.

Michael Morain, a reporter for the Des Moines Register, referred to some of those hitting the campaign trail in a recent story as “rabid extroverts.” I suppose he’s right.

That’s what I get for teaching them to find their backbones. I get it! So I borrowed other people’s kids, instead.

It didn’t start out that way. No, first I recruited like-minded friends to head out to Iowa with me after spotting a carpool-event on berniesanders.com, organized by Aurora resident and veteran volunteer, John Laesch.

We had a fantastic day, learned a lot and planned to go back. But

conflicting schedules meant we’d do so at different times, so I cast a wider net and ended up with other mothers’ kids in my car.

Lili Adam, a longtime family friend from Naperville, and Maggie Farquhar, a resident of Aurora, may be too young to vote in this election (they won’t be 18 by Nov. 8), but they’re old enough to realize their stake in the outcome of it – and help “get out the vote” they would!

Together we taught would-be voters how to register to vote, guided folks to their correct caucus locations and alerted many to their rights, as protected by law, to get time off from work to caucus and vote. It wasn’t easy, and it was icy.

Poor Lili still has the bruises to prove it.

But by Monday afternoon I was convinced. Borrowing other people’s children for such grueling work actually is the way to go. There was no whining to contend with and no sighing or eye-rolling (that I noticed), just an eager determination to get the job done. You know those

moments when you catch your kids in the wild, being all grown up and helpful? Yeah!

Why don’t we do this on purpose?

You know, swap kids on chore days?

Shovel the neighbor’s walk?

Bring it on!

But I digress. Lili and Maggie were rock stars. They learned to navigate unfamiliar neighborhoods and juggle canvass sheets and caucus cards like pros, and giggled with me for hours. In fact, last Friday morning, after two police officers asked me to move my illegally parked car (I’d unwittingly parked behind the police station), I did – but not before we got them both to sign caucus cards!

Monday, the day of the Iowa caucuses, the girls and I canvassed for over seven hours, straying from our canvass sheets when the spirit moved us, including once when we stopped a jogger in his tracks with our Bernie-business. He actually showed up at the caucus to which

CRISPY OVEN-ROASTED BROCCOLI Serves 4

Italian spice trio: into 1-in. florets 2 Tbl. dried oregano 1 ⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 Tbl. fennel seeds 1 1 tsp. kosher salt ⁄2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1 ⁄4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper Other: Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 large or 2 small heads broccoli, cut

To make the spice trio: Combine the oregano, fennel seeds and red pepper flakes in an airtight container.

Store at room temperature for up to one month. Place two racks in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Use the convection setting if available.

Combine the broccoli, olive oil, 1 tablespoon of the spice trio, salt, pepper and lemon zest in a large bowl. Stir to coat the broccoli evenly. Spread the broccoli evenly on two baking sheets.

Roast for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir.

Place the sheets on opposite racks and roast until the broccoli has caramelized and is just cooked through, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in one teaspoon lemon juice, adding more to taste. Serve hot or at room temperature.

“I came here because you told me to come for Bernie,” he said – and boy am I glad we did!

Because when the 113 people caucusing in this precinct split up and voted, the tally was 56 for Bernie and 56 for Clinton, with one undecided – proof positive that grassroots, door-to-door (and jogger-to-jogger) canvassing really matters.

Really wild, though, was what happened after the proceedings began, when a young woman arrived at 7:04 p.m., four minutes late.

Caucus rules are clear, that no one is to be admitted – in fact, the doors are to be locked – after 7 p.m.

In this case they were not. She approached to register, so I kindly objected.

The chair, who’d already made it clear that he supported Clinton, made an announcement that there had been an objection – but that, as the chair, he was overriding the objection and allowing her to vote.

As it happens, she cast a vote for

Clinton, too.

The vote then tied, each camp lobbied the undecided guy (reportedly a former Republican) who finally went Bernie’s way – so he won this particular precinct – and, overall, the whole county (my hat’s off to Michael Ortiz and Dawn Jones, who expertly coordinated the efforts in Clinton County!).

What a blast!

Before we left the caucus, I told the chairperson I’d like to see some sort of sticker worn by each voter after they checked in, so that those who come to observe aren’t counted, accidentally or otherwise.

As it happened, Miss Lili had shaken her head “no” to avoid being included in the count, as she and Maggie happened to be standing near to the Bernie group when the Bernie count was tallied. It would have been that easy to cheat. I am so proud of these girls! – and Bernie would be, too.

Moral integrity is what this campaign is about. “We’re all in this together,” he has said on numerous occasions, including Wednesday night during CNN’s televised Town Hall in New Hampshire when he answered a question about his spirituality.

It’s a miracle that we have such

a man offering to serve as our president. That he’s tough, has a consistent and decades-long history of representing average and needy Americans – and is savvy and sharp, too, is beyond my wildest imaginings.

How lucky are we? He’s made me feel proud to be American again, and I am grateful to him for his generous service to us in running for president.

I have never believed so thoroughly in any candidate and believe, as he does, that this really is a team effort.

I said as much when I described the events of Monday night to my kids, as they prepared to leave for school Tuesday morning.

Each time I spoke up (for example, when I asked the precinct captain for Hillary Clinton to please allow caucusers to count off for themselves, out loud and one at a time), I tended to do so after glancing first at my friends.

I know Betsy to have such equanimity in such situations and respect her tenure as a knowledgeable League of Women Voters member, and knew her expression would either embolden or discourage me from acting.

My kids will say I likely would

have, anyhow (ha!), but I felt more sure-footed. We were a team in there.

And that’s Bernie’s point, too.

We’re all in this together. It’s not about him, it’s about us.

We’re at a huge crossroads, and the world is watching to see what kind of people we will decide we are.

Folks from all over the world are flying in to support this campaign, this compassionate political revolution, so it wasn’t even a question that I would drive the two hours to Iowa to do the same.

I did it for my children and yours, whose futures hang in the balance, and I did it for Bernie Sanders, because Bernie is here for us.

We’ve only just begun.

We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to right so many wrongs, and I’d hate for us to waste it.

Am I tired?

Uh huh.

But am I feeling the Bern? You betcha.

Dear Dr. K: My hip has bad arthritis, and my doctor says I need either a hip replacement or something called “hip resurfacing.”

Which one is best?

Dear reader: I once had to ask myself that same question, when my right hip became so painful from arthritis that something needed to be done. Let me first explain what each type of surgery is, and then how to think about the choice between them.

The hip is a ball-andsocket joint. The ball – the top of the femur – fits into the socket, the cup-shaped area in the pelvis called the acetabulum. In a total hip replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged surface of the socket, and also removes the femoral head and the neck of the femur. Then the surgeon replaces the surface of the socket and the top of the femur bone with artificial components.

In a hip resurfacing, the surgeon replaces the socket – just as in a hip replacement. However, the surgeon keeps the femur in place, reshapes the ball on top of the femur and places an artificial cap (a new “surface”) on top of the ball. So both the ball and the socket have a new surface, but less surgery is done. Less bone is removed, and less soft tissue around the bone is injured. That’s the attraction of hip resurfacing: It’s simpler and faster than hip replacement. The recovery time is the same: three days in the hospital, followed by four to six weeks of physical therapy.

Insurance pays for both procedures.

So far, so good. Based on what I’ve said so far, I might have chosen hip resurfacing over hip replacement. But not everyone who needs hip

“The anatomy of the hip allows you to do a total hip replacement on anyone who needs it,” says my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Donald Reilly. “But not everyone has the right anatomy for hip resurfacing.” That includes small women with poor bone quality and people with certain femoral head anatomies that make femur fractures more likely.

That was not a problem in my case: I could have had hip resurfacing.

The most important question is: How good are the results of hip replacement versus hip resurfacing? A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that the results in the first few years are similar.

However, hip resurfacing is new enough that we don’t yet know how long-lasting the positive effects are. Traditional total hip replacement surgery has been practiced for nearly 50 years; we know a lot about the longterm results. The artificial parts of the new hip tend to last between 15 and 20 years.

Finally, there’s an increased risk of a particular fracture in hip resurfacing patients. If that fracture occurs, then you need a second operation – a hip replacement.

I decided that since I probably had at least 20 more years to live, I would have hip replacement: It was likely to last as long as I did.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and my fiancé is 21. We plan to get married sometime soon, but have not set the date yet. Andrew is a wonderful guy, and I love him very much. He has all the qualities I want for a husband, but he does have one minor flaw – he is extremely jealous.

Then a couple of weeks after that, this guy and his pal were driving home from a party when his car spun out of control and both of them were killed. The state police said speed was the major cause of the accident.

Needless to say, my best friend was devastated and, for me, it was a terribly sad moment and definitely a wake-up call.

When my boyfriend recently started driving recklessly, I told him to stop being a showoff or I would not ride with him. He continued his antics, so I told him I would not ride with him again.

Dear Abby: Every December my wife virtually buries our home in Christmas decorations. It’s not just the tree and stockings in the living room; she’s not happy until there are Christmas towels and Christmas soap in the bathroom and another tree and knicky-knacky stuff downstairs. Not even a doorknob is safe from decoration.

It drives me nuts; I feel so claustrophobic. I bump into these decorations everywhere I turn. I was raised differently, more simply. There was a tree in the living room and stockings hung from the mantel. That was it.

For the last 20 years of our marriage, I have suggested – unsuccessfully – that we compromise and alternate every other year. One year her way, the next mine. When I do, she tearfully accuses me of being Scrooge.

David Brin, a scientist and award-winning author of science fiction, said, “There’s no doubt that scientific training helps many authors to write better science fiction. And yet, several of the very best were English majors who could not parse a differential equation to save their lives.”

At the bridge table, we love majors and dislike minors up to the game-level, because in a major we have to win one fewer trick to get the game bonus.

However, when climbing up to a slam, minors are fine because we need 12 or 13 tricks whatever the strain.

When you have game values but do not find a major-suit fit, you steer toward three no-trump. Only if you are sure that contract cannot make, do you – kicking and screaming! – play in five of a minor.

So, at a low level, we try to find a major-suit fit. Look at the South hand in today’s diagram. After opening one diamond and hearing partner respond one heart, South must rebid one spade, not two diamonds. If partner does not raise spades, South can show his long diamond suit on the next round. Here, of course, North raises to two spades (promising fourcard support), and South jumps to four spades – when you smell a game, bid that game.

The defenders start with three rounds of clubs. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

South must get his diamond suit established, and the heart king is a red herring. Declarer should draw two rounds of trumps, cash the diamond ace-king, ruff a diamond on the board, play a heart to his ace, and lead out winning diamonds. He loses only two clubs and one trump.
