RIVER Flows Through It A

Learn about Fox River wildlife and recreation in free lecture series

Living adjacent to the Fox River in St. Charles for 45 years has brought John Rabchuk plenty of bliss.

He knows he isn’t the only one passionate about the Fox and its wildlife.

Perhaps that explains the encouraging attendance at “A River Flows Through It,” a monthly lecture series from January through May presented by The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles, of which Rabchuk is director, in partnership with The Conservation Foundation and St. Charles Park District.

The Foundation is set to conclude the 2023 season by hosting speakers discussing birds of the Fox River Valley (April 19) and fishing on the Fox (May 17). The free presentations run from 7-8 p.m. at Collins Auditorium in Baker Community Center, 101 S. 2nd St., St. Charles.

Rabchuk recalled lively participation in earlier sessions covering Fox River dams and wildlife conservation.

“Rivers and changes to rivers are always tied to emotions, you know,” he said.

5 FOX RIVER TRAIL GUIDE 2023

From Rabchuk’s perspective, the breadth of bird species certainly has expanded over the decades.

Sure, there are the Canadian geese that seem more loath to visit Florida with each passing year, but Rabchuk also doesn’t remember seeing eagles, egrets and blue herons, among others, the way he does now.

“All of those are relatively new and great to see, which means the health of the river is much better too,” Rabchuk said. “And the same is true of the smaller songbirds. … A number of years ago, we never saw those kinds of birds here.”

Rabchuk describes a burgeoning birding community along the Fox, one that was “very active” before, but took off due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That seemed to accelerate it,” he said. “It’s one of the activities you could do. You’re outdoors. You’re on your own. There’s a lot of various places, and the

Fox River Valley is a flight way for a lot of migratory birds. But it’s also home to a whole raft of other birds that people don’t understand the particular nature of.”

Those interested are encouraged to visit the lecture to learn more.

About a month after this presentation, Ryan Solomon of the St. Charles Park District is slated to speak about fishing along the Fox. Might he tell the tale of the 30-to-35-inch muskie he once caught across from Pottawatomie Park? Stay tuned.

Either way, Rabchuk surmises that the presence of such fish is a credit to the improved water quality in the river.

Still, some conservation experts Rabchuk has spoken to feel adjusting the river flow could further enhance water quality.

One theory he relayed: removing various dams to allow for better migration of freshwater mussels, who help clean the water.

“They migrate by attaching eggs to the side of fish. So, when you have a dam and the fish can’t move up and down the river, then it kind of isolates them,” Rabchuk said. “And those freshwater mussels suck in water and keep the nutrients, and putting out fresh water and clean water.”

Rabchuk added that the Foundation always welcomes new members or anyone seeking more information.

“There’s room on our website [www.stcrivercorridor. org] to raise your hand a little bit and say ‘I’d like to get involved somehow,’” Rabchuk said. “We don’t have any dues. It’s a pure volunteer group, but it’s a pretty active and very dedicated group.”

The Fox River Bike Trail in Elgin offers more than 40 miles of guaranteed fun. It runs beside the scenic Fox River in Northern Illinois, alongside historic railroad lines, crossing six bridges and passing through nature preserves and charming towns.

The trail is the perfect outing for spirited cyclists, hikers, families and outdoor aficionados. No weather is too extreme to take advantage of the paths. Or perhaps stop and enjoy the food en route at one of the many adjacent restaurants, or pack a lunch and pull over at one of the many picnic spots!

The Fox River Bike Trail passes through many forest preserves, offering weary cyclists the perfect excuse to ease off the pedals and soak up the natural beauty of the river. Native birds you may see include herons, woodpeckers and bald eagles- just to name a few.

Visitors coming from Chicago to Elgin are able to bring their bikes on Metra’s Milwaukee District West Line and get off at the National Street or Elgin exits, both a block from the bike trails, making it accessible to people who are traveling some distance.

In West Dundee, check out The Half Full Nest Vintage Market where Sleepy Hollow resident Angelike Ajroja’s love for art, home décor and antiques come together in a delightful shop that is housed in a former church.

“As a local resident of 25 years, the building always intrigued me,” Ajroja said. “When I was looking for a location for the shop, all it took was one peek through the front door side windows and I felt in love. We worked diligently for five months making renovations to restore the building to its original, historic beauty.”

She opened the business in 2019 and since then, shoppers have enjoyed hunting among her treasures that include antiques, vintage items and new pieces from the collection of dealers and artisans. The shop carries a wide assortment from statement pieces to perfect gifts for friends and family.

There’s plenty to explore along the trail, so put a basket on your bike, and here are a few more great destinations to check out.

Grove Ave., there is a coffee bar located inside this location that houses more than 6,000 square feet of retail space featuring handmade items, clothing, antiques and home décor, to name a few of the favorites. The name Meraki comes from modern Greek, meaning to leave a piece of yourself in your work, or the idea of loving what you do so much you put yourself into your work.

Another must-stop in downtown Elgin is Rediscover Records, 9 S. Spring St., which carries new release to classics in almost every music genre. Housed in a building that dates back to 1885, find albums that will remind you of a different era, or hear your favorite artists of the day on vinyl.

BATAVIA

One can spend an entire day shopping and dining in the TriCities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia but if you’re riding in the area Friday through Sunday, make plans to stop and visit the Batavia Boardwalk Shops, 114 E. Wilson St., open May 12 through Dec. 17. These

small shops have become a big attraction, as merchants take up residence in this incubator site to test the market and gain retail experiences with community support. This year, nine new merchants will be moving into the shops with a 10th shop to house rotating vendors each weekend, explained Kristen Desler, assistant director for the Batavia MainStreet.

Through the years, many of the shops that started at the Batavia Boardwalk Shops have used their experiences to launch their business into brick and mortar locations across the community, so find alumni of this shopping area in and around the TriCities.

Time

to hit the Fox River Trail

Now that Mother Nature has once again smiled on us with warmer temperatures, it’s time to take advantage of another one of her gifts — the Fox River. The Fox River Trail can get you out and communing with the great outdoors, with a lot to see along the way.

Tour historical sites in Fox River communities

Hike, bike, go fishing or take in some wildlife and historic sites along the more than 40 miles of former rail line that hugs the river. On your adventure, you can stop at the towns along the trail for a rest in a park, a meal, shopping, or just taking in the sights. Rest assured, there are plenty of places along the way, and a number of bike shops in towns along the trail if you need some adjusting or repairs.

In Elgin, Pratt’s Castle is a site not to be missed, but note that it is private property and should only be viewed from the trail. The castle, built in 1937, includes a 50-foot tower, a moat and drawbridge. The Elgin National Watch Historic District is also fun to explore, and Walton Island Park, created by the WPA in the 1930s, is a great place to rest or go fishing. Elgin is also one of the few places where the trail crosses the river.

Red Oak Nature Center, in Batavia, is currently undergoing a major refresh, expanding to meet popular demand for its naturebased programming, according to Tim Wagner, Fox Valley Park District public relations and

content strategist. The Wilds at Red Oak is scheduled to open in time for summer nature programming and camps. The center offers hands-on indoor activities, adventurous camps, animal exhibits, Nature Play Preschool and special events like MapleFest and BugFest. The center is devoted to nature and conservation education and is well worth a stop along the trail. The preserve also includes hiking and a cave.

Make a stop in historic Batavia, where you’ll find thrift shops, ice cream, records and the Batavia Depot Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Housed in an 1854 railroad depot, you can learn about railroads, transportation and local history.

You can also learn about windmills and see one for real. The Fabyan Windmill, constructed in the 1850s, is a 68-foot national landmark located along the river. Then head to Geneva, where you can tour the Fabyan Villa Museum, on the National Register of Historic Places, and home of Colonel George Fabyan who owned the windmill.

Up the trail, visit historic St. Charles where you’ll find the Arcada Theatre and Hotel Baker,

both on the National Register. Or make a stop at a local cafe before you head back on the trail. Spend time at Pottawattomie Park where you can rest along the river, or take a sightseeing trip aboard the Fox River Queen or St. Charles Belle II on a St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboat Cruise, learning about area history.

No matter where you start or end your Fox River Trail adventure, there is always something to enjoy and history to celebrate.

Youth?
Is a Bicycle the
of

My 85-year-old dad hadn’t ridden a bicycle for years, but after hopping off one of our electric bikes he exclaimed, “Wow, I felt like a kid again!”

Not only is cycling an enjoyable, low-impact form of exercise – it also shows remarkable mental health benefits. Cyclists and people that maintain an active lifestyle are generally happier and less prone to depression. A retired friend of mine recently shared how he thinks he has discovered the fountain of youth in biking, citing how he is in better shape and happier than ever before. I have a good feeling that retirement had something to do with the “happier than ever” bit, but I’m satisfied with giving cycling all the credit.

It is true: exercise is a good form of preventative medicine.

Unfortunately, this message has been lost over time as our society has become increasingly sedentary, leaving aging adults unnecessarily frail.

The phrase “use it or lose it” is key for people of all ages. Staying active helps reduce or delay typical age-related conditions like dementia, osteoporosis, immune system deterioration, and loss of muscle mass.

Can people who opt for electric bikes still reap these benefits? Absolutely! Electric bikes are an excellent and innovative way to exercise because each rider can customize how much the bike’s motor will assist him or her based on their abilities. With the partial motorized assistance the electric bikes offer, the rider can simply get up a hill faster, travel further, and keep up with faster companions.

Newly designed three-wheel bikes have also become popular by expanding the availability of riding to even more people. The sporty designs are offered with electric options and no longer resemble the tricycle you rode as a kid. This makes it possible for all ages to get their bodies moving and feel confident riding a bike.

Young or old, we can all enjoy the freedom of cycling. Maybe it’s true that the fountain of youth can be found on a bike. Hop on one soon and find out for yourself!

See you at the shop,

for 40 years and counting

When Youth Minister Rusty Skipworth was faced with the inevitable during the pandemic, he found a purpose and love in cycling.

“It was right at the beginning of the pandemic when everything kind of went weird,” says Skipworth. “I work for a church, so I had a lot of time at home and most of everything we were doing was remotely.”

Skipworth’s son looked for any way to stay active when stuck at home, a predicament he took in stride. “My son was very active and he started riding his bike just to fill up time in the day when he wasn’t online doing school, and I decided I would ride with him,” says Skipworth. “So, we started riding and I couldn’t keep up with him –we were doing maybe six or seven miles at a time. It kind of got to the point where I just wanted to ride more and more, and

so I did to the point where he didn’t want to ride with me anymore. That’s how it started.”

As Skipworth continued to find his footing in the cycling world, he started to realize the sheer amount of natural areas, paths and trails he could access and explore on the back of his bike. “I like all the paths and areas, with the area we live in, we’re very fortunate for the trail systems we have,” says Skipworth. “When I started, I didn’t know about all of that. I’ve lived next to these trails for all these years and I had no idea.”

The Fox River Trail was a particular favorite of Skipworth, who became a frequent flyer on its gorgeous path. “I go right up the Fox River Trail, as it starts right where I live, but I was only going three and a half miles or so,” says Skipworth. “Then, one day, I decided I was going to cross the street. the trail. Then I realized it connected to the Gilman Trail, which took me all the way to Sugar Grove. I started realizing all the places that the Fox River Trail leads to.”

Eventually, Skipworth met a bevy of amazing friends and joined a group called Gravel Goofballs, cyclists who prefer to bike over gravel-type paths and trails. “I think we would consider ourselves gravel cyclists,” says Skipworth. “We like the offroad type of stuff and it’s not really mountain biking, it kind of gets you away from everything.” The Gravel Goofballs even have merch like shirts and hats to commemorate their love for the ride. “For us, we just like to ride gravel and that can mean different things to different people,” says Skipworth.

Outside, in the open air, Skipworth has found a place for peace and reflection. “My job is Youth Minister at a church in Naperville and [cycling] gives me an opportunity to get out of the four walls of the church building,” says Skipworth. “I’ve met so many people and made so many friends I wouldn’t have if I had never started this.”
