Attorney general investigates complaints against Lombard group

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The Illinois Attorney General is investigating two complaints about how funds were transferred from the former Lombard Jaycees to the newly formed Lombard Commonwealth.

Lombard Commonwealth President Jackie West said she is not surprised to hear of the complaints, but she had not been contacted by the Attorney General’s office as of Wednesday.

Amanda Ciatti, a Lombard resident who said she has never been a member of the Jaycees, filed one of the complaints.

“My first concern was whether or not the assets were transferred appropriately,” Ciatti said, adding she is acting as a concerned resident.

West maintains the members of the former Lombard Jaycees, who voted to dissolve their chapter Oct. 9, did not do

anything wrong by voting to donate the group’s property to the Lombard Commonwealth.

“We had a special meeting weeks prior, where the membership voted to donate everything to Lombard Commonwealth,” West said.

Initially, the Lombard Commonwealth was established as a limited liability company with the Illinois Secretary of State on Oct. 29.

“Nothing says that we have to donate something to a not-for-profit,” said West, explaining she does not believe the fund transfer violated any bylaws.

In the past, the Lombard Jaycees had donated directly to a family suffering financial hardship due to their son’s medical expenses, she said.

However, as of Monday, the Lombard Commonwealth was registered with the Illinois Secretary of State as a not-for-profit corporation – rather than an LLC – resolving what West

said was a miscommunication with the state about how to establish the new organization.

Ciatti questions the transfer of Jaycee funds to a group that was established after the former organization’s dissolution.

“Legally, LomCom may not be entitled to those assets,” Ciatti said.

She would like to see the Lombard Commonwealth yield the assets transferred from the Lombard Jaycees to the Illinois Jaycees.

Maura Possley, press secretary for the Attorney General’s office, had no information about how or when a decision would be made, but she said the office will be looking into the complaints.

“At best, it’s just people that don’t know what they’re doing; at worst, it’s fraud,” Ciatti said.

West said the complaints were an effort to sabotage the Lombard Commonwealth.

“If it was an issue with the state Jaycees, they would have

contacted me by now,” West said.

She said she would much rather spend her time working on projects for the community.

After the Lombard Village Board of Trustees unanimously denied the Lombard Commonwealth’s request for an extended special event permit to hold a Christmas-themed haunted house where the former Lombard Jaycees and Commonwealth held the annual fall haunted house at Yorktown Shopping Center, the village has approved three individual event permits for the event.

The three single-day permits were reviewed by village departments but did not require board approval.

“We are a go,” West said Wednesday.

The haunted house will be open from 3 to 11 p.m. the first three Saturdays in December.

McQuade said not only do the students actively participate in the annual Golden Gobbler, competing among each other to collect the most food, but they also grasp the seriousness of hunger.

“They all understand this is to help those less fortunate than themselves,” she said.

LOMBARD – Montini Catholic High School students collected more than 3,000 nonperishable items for area food pantries during the 18th annual Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive.

“It was a little on the higher end this year,” Montini co-Director of Student Activities Jill McQuade said of the 3,400 items collected during a twoweek period.

The event is a collaboration between Montini Student Government, National Honor Society and Campus Ministry, but the entire school participates.

The senior class won this year’s food collection competition among the grade levels, followed by the sophomores in second place.

“Our seniors tend to be the ones who win because they have done it for four years,” said McQuade, who’s been involved with the Golden Gobbler for the past three years.

Each day from Nov. 3 through 17, students focused on a different food item to collect. After collecting as much as possible, Montini divides up the food as evenly as it can among several food pantries in DuPage County in time for Thanksgiving. “[Mike Kisicki] and his

Villa Park celebrates Thanksgiving by giving back “For most of these recruits, this is the first time away from home, not only for the recruits, but the families, too.”

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – When 200 naval recruits pull up to the Elmhurst American Legion on Thanksgiving, they will be greeted by nearly 100 volunteers and more food than they could ever imagine.

Villa Park VFW Post 2801 is again participating in the Navy’s Adopt-a-Sailor program, joining with the Elmhurst American Legion to offer a home-away-from-home for recruits from Naval Station Great Lakes’ boot camp.

The post has partnered with the station for the program for at least seven years, said Earl Gerhard, a VFW member who has been part of the annual Thanksgiving celebration for each of those years.

Through the program, recruits who are close to graduating are “adopted” by their own families, someone else’s or area organizations, like the VFW, for the Thanksgiving holiday. When they leave the station in Great Lakes, they

Boot camp is about eight weeks long, and during that time, recruits have limited access to telephones, only getting to make three short calls during their time there, said Brian Walsh, public affairs specialist for Naval Station Great Lakes. They are allowed to write letters once a week, and they have no access to email or social media.

“For most of these recruits, this is the first time away from home, not only for the recruits, but the families, too,” Walsh said.

That’s one feature that makes Thanksgiving at the Villa Park VFW particularly special: The recruits will be able to call and email their

friends and family.

Cellphones and airtime are donated by AT&T, and computers come to the VFW from the Army National Guard station in North Riverside, said Steve Prescott, quartermaster of the Villa Park VFW. Recruits will arrive by 8:30 a.m. at the American Legion, where a continental breakfast will be waiting for them.

They’ll have time to use the phones and computers, play video games, watch sports games on TV and just relax.

The Thanksgiving luncheon is served at noon, followed by a sandwich and dessert buffet beginning at 4:30 p.m., before the recruits say their goodbyes to volunteers at 6.

When recruits leave the station in the morning, they know

they are going to be served dinner, but besides that, they are in the dark, Walsh said.

“All they’re expecting is a meal, and it’s a whole lot more,” he said.

And they show no shortage of gratitude for everything they are given.

“We get more hugs and kisses when they’re leaving, you’d think they were our sons,” said Arlyne Gerhard, Earl’s wife and the volunteer coordinator for the event.

Thanksgiving dinner is made possible through the generosity of many donors, including stores such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, Aldi and Villa Park’s Mike’s Meat Market, Prescott said.

But the volunteers aren’t just giving to others on Thanksgiving; they’re getting something in return.

“It makes them feel really good inside, getting the chance to help out these young soldiers,” Prescott said.

Man pleads guilty to attempted murder

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com A Carol Stream man pleaded guilty Nov. 13 to attempted first-degree murder after he shot his wife in July 2011 in Oakbrook Terrace after she left work in Elmhurst, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Ronald D. Attorney’s Of- Smith fice.

Aiesha Thomas left Lexington Health Care for the day when Ronald D. Smith forced her car off the road with his vehicle on Butterfield Road near Route 83 and opened fire, striking his wife in the wrist.

Thomas exited the vehicle and a passing motorist picked her up. Smith then followed that vehicle. After a brief chase, he forced it off the road and opened fire once again.

The good Samaritan drove Thomas to the Oakbrook Terrace Police Department, and she then was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. Smith later turned himself in to police.

In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Smith also pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm, Darrah said.

Since being charged, he has remained in the DuPage County Jail on $500,000 bond, Darrah said.

Smith will be sentenced Dec. 2 and he is expected to receive a 31-year sentence, based on an agreement among the prosecutors, defense attorneys and presiding judge, Darrah said.

Smith’s trial was scheduled to begin this week before he pleaded guilty to the charges against him, he said.

LOMBARD – Montini Catholic High School in Lombard and the Weiger family awarded a student with a special scholarship during a football game in October.

Prior to the kickoff Oct. 17, senior football player and Villa Park resident Samuel Asta was called out onto the field to receive the second annual Spirit of ’76 Scholarship Award in memory of teammate Johnny Weiger, according to a school news release.

Johnny joined the Montini Catholic community for the 2011-12 school year as a member of the Class of 2015. He died Nov. 4, 2012, from a blood disorder called thrombotic

thrombocytopenic purpura, or TTP, caused by a bone marrow transplant he received to fight leukemia.

Johnny’s jersey number was 76. The football team received special uniforms to be worn each year at the Spirit of ’76 game as a tribute to their teammate.

In his memory, the Weiger family decided to present an award to a member of the varsity football team who has displayed the true meaning of team spirit and sportsmanship during the season, the release stated.

“Throughout his battle with leukemia and TTP, Johnny displayed the spirit of a champion,” Montini President Jim Segredo said in the release.

Make moment last in stand against hatred It appears hatred may have inspired a person to smear anti-Semitic graffiti on a Lombard synagogue last month.

If that’s the power of one, what can the power of hundreds inspire when they stand together against hatred?

That’s up to all of us.

Days after Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard was vandalized Oct. 21, including graffiti and broken windows, a man was charged with a hate crime, armed violence and other crimes. Two weeks later, local religious leaders from the Islamic, Christian and Mormon communities, among others, rallied in support of the “brotherhood and sisterhood” they share with their Jewish counterparts.

“It’s clear that we do not stand alone,” Rabbi Steven Bob told the hundreds who attended a special event Nov. 8 at the synagogue.

The moving show of solidarity reminds us that we are all neighbors, we are all part of the same community despite differing religious beliefs.

But once the power of the moment fades and everyone returns to their own syna-

gogues, churches, mosques or otherwise, the lasting impact becomes everyone’s responsibility.

It’s easy after an incident like this to look at the headshot in the newspaper and make one person the face of racial or religious intolerance. Keep in mind, the accused has pleaded not guilty and deserves a chance to defend himself in court.

Truth is, the fear and ignorance that often fuels hatred exists among us in our everyday lives, sometimes inconspicuously and perhaps closer than we’d like to admit.

We must ask ourselves how the examples we set, the words we use, the jokes we tell might perpetuate intolerance in ourselves or those around us.

Whether or not we want the responsibility, our actions can influence people. Each of us has the power to inspire, for better or for worse.

Hundreds of supporters gathering that night at Congregation Etz Chaim wasn’t about making one person the bad guy. It was about making all of us better together.

Keep the power of that moment alive.

AGNES M. ELDENMAXSON Agnes M. EldenMaxson, nee Marty, longtime resident of Elmhurst, born February 28, 1912, in Pana, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Joseph Marty and Marie C. Weiss Marty. She graduated from Pana Township High School, attended Brown's Business College in Decatur, Illinois.

In 1941 she married William Robert Elden, Jr. former Elmhurst City Engineer who served as a Captain with the U.S. Army combat engineers in the European Theatre during WWII. During the war, Mrs. Elden-Maxson was the first woman to be hired in the accounting office of Gauger and Diehl in Decatur, Illinois. In 1980, she married Raymond D. Maxson, retired Senior Vice President with Commonwealth Edison, Trustee of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and Chairman of the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Her business career spanned some fifty years as an accountant, office manager and executive secretary. She was associated with Elmhurst Memorial Hospital for 45 years through employment and volunteer work. She was a resident of Elmhurst, Illinois since 1960.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Robert Elden III; her husbands, William Robert Elden, Jr. and Raymond D. Maxson; her brothers, Father Dominic Charles Marty, Bernard (the late Dolores) Marty, John (the late Elaine) Marty; and her sisters, Cecilia (the late Arthur) Dougherty, Sister Mary Carl Marie Marty (O.P.), Gertrude M. (the late Corwin) Carey and Mildred (the late Marvin) Knoblich.

All who knew her will remember her generous volunteer activities which included serving many years as the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Guild Remembrance Fund Chairman, being a member of The Hospice volunteer program and The Resource Center, teaching for 20 years with Religious Education Program at Immaculate Conception Church, membership with the National Council of Catholic Women and the School on Wheels (Laubaugh Program) and as a leader of the Women's Discussion Group.

John Mahoney won his thousands while playing Lucky Day Lotto after the numbers on his Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers – 02, 07, 21, 35, 38 – in the Nov. 7 evening drawing, according to an Illinois Lottery news release.

Mahoney has lived in Glen Ellyn and the surrounding area for 45 years. He has four children, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, the release stated.

A regular Lucky Day Lotto player, Mahoney said in the release he always plays Quick Pick tickets. He plans to put his winnings in the bank for now while he decides what to do next, according to the release.

barked on a mission to bring another child into the Contant family.

“People look at us and go, ‘You’re nuts,’” John Contant said about welcoming a fifth child into their home.

He said it’s not just a desire to give what they can to another orphan that compels him and his family, but also their experience during Maeve’s adoption.

“Maeve has given us so much,” Contant said.

Their first adoption took eight years, which is longer than typical, he said. In August 2013, they finally brought home Maeve Long Bing, a little girl with albinism, who is now 2 years old.

“She’s a cute little girl.

She’s growing up so fast,” 86-year-old Ronne said of the youngest Contant child.

More than two dozen people arrived at Ed Ronne’s Elmhurst home on a chilly Saturday morning equipped with paint, rakes and hammers. The crew included the Contants’ three other children, Tristan, 14, Ella, 10, and Aidan, 6.

“It was a lot more than I ever expected,” said Ronne, who has lived in the same Elmhurst home for the past 45 years.

On Saturday, the crew of volunteers who ranged in age from 6 to 60 managed to complete yard work, clean gutters and repair Ronne’s back porch. Inside, they painted

several rooms, ripped out carpet, installed new light fixtures and new flooring and gave the house a deep cleaning.

“She would have loved to have been here Saturday,” Ronne said of his late wife.

Contant wanted to thank Panera Bread in Oak Brook, Starbucks and Chick-fil-A in Elmhurst, Home Depot in Northlake and HOBO in Villa Park for donating supplies and food for volunteers.

He said his family expects to need about $35,000 to fund the adoption process. Both Hands collects donations designated for the Contants and puts them in an escrow account the family can draw from for adoption expenses. Should any money be left over, it will be applied to another adoption either by the Contants or another family.

The money has started to come in, but Contant said they are still a long way from their goal.

Ronne helped the Contants financially during Maeve’s adoption, so when they heard about the Both Hands project, they knew they would use the opportunity to give back to Ronne. While they had a plan, Contant was still surprised by the project.

“It’s very humbling that people would give us their time like this,” he said.

A high-ranking member of a drug-trafficking ring in DuPage and Cook counties has been found guilty through the first use of the state’s Street Gang and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law in DuPage County, according to a news release from the county state’s attorney’s office.

Chicago resident Terrence Steele, 36, was found guilty by jury of heroin possession and sales charges late Nov. 14.

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

“Christmas at Downton Abbey” The hit television series is making a play for the music charts with a 45-track double CD featuring a festive version of the show’s theme song in addition to traditional hymns and carols. Artists featured include “Downton” actors Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Julian Ovenden, who sings five songs. Available Nov. 10.

“Bruce Springsteen: The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984” by Bruce Springsteen A boxed set comprised of remastered editions of the first seven albums recorded and released by Springsteen for Columbia Records between 1973 and 1984.

All of the albums are newly remastered (five for the first time ever on CD), and all seven are making their remastered debut on vinyl. The seven albums are in re-creations of their original packaging, and the set is accompanied by a 60-page book featuring rarely-seen photos, memorabilia and original press clippings from Springsteen’s first decade as a recording artist.

Save on appetizers: Appetizers set the tone for the meal, so they need to be appealing. On the other hand, you don't want guests to fill up on them and have no room left for the main course. Keeping appetizers light and simple saves room in guests' tummies and saves you time, too.

Serve simple two-ingredient appetizers or even storebought options to minimize prep time.

What to do with the time you save: Put the time-savings toward more sophisticated side dishes. Along with traditional family favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes, try something new that might require a bit more prep and longer cooking time, such as a winter squash

‘NOG THIS is how eggnog should taste

There seem to be two camps around Christmastime — those who adore eggnog and those who abhor it.

Naturally, we find ourselves on the side of adoration, but with all those soupy, sickeningly sweet variations available on marketplace shelves, we can see the haters’ point.

That’s not eggnog. Real eggnog is rich, velvety and frothed to perfection.

So this year, brew your ‘nog from home and don’t cut corners with cheap brandies or rum. Think of it this way — if you won’t drink it straight, it’ll probably spoil your concoction.

Also keep in mind that spicy eggnog flavorings can easily go beyond the mug.

Integrate leftovers into our cleverly delicious Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake.

Holiday Eggnog Yields 7 cups • 6 whole eggs • 2 egg yolks • 1 cup granulated sugar • 4 t sea salt • 3 cups whole milk • 1 T vanilla extract • 1 to 2 cup bourbon whiskey • 1 to 2 t freshly ground nutmeg • 1 cup heavy cream • 4 cup vanilla sugar (or plain granulated sugar) Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a heavy-bottom sauce pot. Whisk until smooth, then stir in milk.

Cook and stir over low heat until custard is cooked to about 165F, or until thick

enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake Remove from heat and add vanilla extract, Yields 16 servings bourbon and nutmeg. Cool completely.

• 1 (18-ounce) boxed spice cake mix To finish, whisk cream and vanilla sugar • 1 (4-serving) instant vanilla or in a mixing bowl until cream reaches stif cheesecake pudding and pie mix peaks. Fold cream into chilled custard. Pour • 1 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt into serving glasses and finish with a pinch • 4 cup canola oil of nutmeg and drizzle of bourbon (optional).

Preheat oven to 350F. Coat a nonstick Bundt pan with cooking spray.

Combine cake mix, pudding mix, yogurt, oil, eggnog, egg and egg whites in a large bowl. Mix until creamy.

Stir in pecans. Pour into prepared pan.

The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco.

While I liked the red salsa, my

personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde.

The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.

We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m.

The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices.

BOLINGBROOK – It was a crisp autumn morning when my friend and I walked into Sage Kitchen + Bar in Bolingbrook.

The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space.

We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks.

My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs.

Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette.

I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option.

We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side.

As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day.

My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

Montini claims sixth straight semifinal berth

By GREG LEASURE gleasure@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Immediately following Saturday’s Class 5A quarterfinal 23-13 win against Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock, Montini’s football team huddled up near the end zone and voiced its satisfaction with the words “Hurricane season is over.”

For six straight seasons, Montini (9-3) has met the Marian Central Hurricanes (7-5) in the playoffs. For six straight seasons, the Hurricane’s season has ended at the hands of the Broncos.

Montini jumped out to a 17-0 lead early in the first half, thanks to two touchdowns from sophomore Prince Walker. He finished with 94 rushing yards in the game. According to Walker, constantly making adjustments against a Marian defense that loves to load the box was the key to Montini’s success on offense.

“We know what the defense does,” Walker said. “We know how to adjust back to what they do, and that’s what we did.”

Fueling those successful offensive drives and puzzling Marian quarterback Billy Bahl all game was the Broncos defense. Terrell Johnson, Austin Warden and Mitch West each intercepted Bahl once in the first half, which led to a 20-7 Montini halftime lead.

On offense, quarterback Chuck Norgle moved the Broncos well all game. The senior completed 24 of his 34 passing attempts for 283 yards.

Although Norgle and the Broncos offense struggled to convert in the red zone at times in the second half against Marian’s defense, the offense stayed balanced, and it paid off. In addition to solid performances by Norgle and Walker, four different Broncos receivers eclipsed 60 yards on the day.

“Having a day like this will give you momentum going into the next game,” Norgle said of the Broncos passing success.

Geneseo up next for Broncos Montini will now try to carry over that success as they advance to a Class 5A semifinal against Geneseo.

After playoff wins against Joliet Catholic and Marian, which are becoming November traditions at Montini, the Broncos face a new team in Geneseo.

The Maple Leafs have played in Class 4A since 2007, meaning they’ve avoided Montini in its run to five straight title games in Class 5A. The Maple Leafs will head to Lombard with a 12-0 record.

The Northern Illinois Big 12 West champs have four shutouts this season and haven’t allowed more than 20 points in a game yet.

Geneseo’s best wins in the regular season came against Yorkville and DeKalb, which both made the second round in Class 6A. The 6-foot outside hitter has a long wingspan, moves well on the court and hits hard. It was no secret that the Montini senior was the go-to hitter on the Broncos, but that didn’t stop her from getting her kills.

“She finds a way to pound through and score every match,” Montini coach Steve Dowjotas said. “She’s consistent, especially this year playing all six rotations. Her defense and serve receive has improved a lot.”

This season, she finished with 314 kills despite missing a few matches. She also had 74 blocks and added back row play to her arsenal with 147 digs.

“It was a dream come true,” Loftus said. “They reached out to me at first. I went on 12 or 13 visits before I went on their visit. Once I was on their cam-

pus and met all the girls I knew I wanted to be there.”

Loftus could laugh at the number of visits she went on before finally finding SLU, but is confident in her choice now.

She credited 1st Alliance Volleyball Club, which she joined as a 15-year-old and is one of the most star-studded clubs

in the area, with helping her develop and aiding in her recruitment.

The Billikens will get one of the most influential figures in the history of Montini volleyball. The Broncos took fourth in Class 3A, finishing up last weekend. It was Montini’s first trip to state. Loftus had 27 kills in the two matches at Redbird Arena in Normal.

“She’s so dynamic,” Dowjotas said. “She’s a game changer. I think there’s only been one team that has been able to control her. ... Most people have to worry about her and it kind of helps everybody else out.”

Loftus got started in volleyball at age 11, but it wasn’t the only sport she played. Once she got into it, it was a clear choice what sport to focus on.

“For grade school I started playing volleyball, basketball and track,” she said. “I just fell in love with volleyball the most.”
