Suburban Life Nun figurines offer tribute to upbringing

LOMBARD – It was the worst night of Gloria Casper’s life.

On May 23, 1945, the 9-year-old and her two sisters were hauled away by a paddy wagon from Ridge Farm in Lake Forest and taken to the Audy Home, a juvenile detention center in Chicago.

“Nobody told us anything, and we had no idea where we were going or why we had to go,” said Casper, who now lives at Beacon Hill Lifespace Community in Lombard. “I remember the paddy wagon was white and it had bars, and we were just scared stiff.”

Casper and her sisters were forced to stay at the Audy Home for one night before being placed at the Angel Guardian Orphanage in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, after both her Italian immigrant parents died. Her mother died of heart disease in 1944, and her father died of tuberculosis a year later.

Casper lived at the orphanage for nine years, until she was 18. The nuns who ran the orphanage acted as parents, and the other children became her family.

“The nuns were phenomenal,” she said. “Most were wonderful and very understanding but they insisted we work hard and study hard.”

Now, Casper collects figurines of nuns, to remind her of where she grew up and to honor the women who raised her. She said she saw a statue one day and picked it up. After that, it became her thing, she said, and she now has more than 100.

“They mean a lot to me. There’s a lot of love, a lot of care, and a lot of education [represented in the figurines].

They’ve given a lot to us,” Casper said.

Casper said she and the other children were “taken care of,” but at times, life at Angel Guardian was difficult.

“I sometimes felt lonely,” she said.

“You’re in a crowd with lots of kids around, but you feel alone. I wished I could be in a regular home, to see what a regular house was like.”

Lombard resident Gloria Casper has collected more than 100 nun figurines to honor her upbringing at an orphanage run by nuns. children living there, but she stayed in a “cottage” with 39 other girls. She described the cottages as three huge rooms: one bathroom with sinks along a wall and three cracked toilets, a playroom with boxes for personal belongings, and a huge dorm with all the beds. There was only one nun in each cottage who took care of all 40 kids.

She said they did “typical kid stuff.”

Two priests set up a skating rink in the basement of one of the buildings, and the kids played games and even had a movie night every other Saturday.

After she graduated from high school, Casper went to nursing school, married Joe Casper in 1957 and had three children. She now has five grandchildren.

She opened her own preschool in 1973 in Elk Grove Village, but closed the school in 1998 when she retired to take care of her ailing husband.

Marc Raben, leisure services assistant at Beacon Hill, said he’s amazed at Casper’s ability to persevere despite “growing up with nothing.”

“She was able to create a beautiful life and a beautiful family, and has dedicated her life to helping others,” he said.

“I can’t imagine being a child and going through what she went through, and then to come out as amazing as she is.

It definitely shaped who she is today.”

Alice Sommerville, Casper’s neighbor at Beacon Hill, described her as the “most amazing” woman she’s ever met.

“Her story isn’t always positive, with the strictness of the nuns, but because of her outlook, she looks at the good in her life and forgets the bad. She doesn’t dwell on the bad,” Sommerville said.

Casper said she remembers her childhood fondly, and even kept in touch with one of the nuns, Sister Gregory, who was one of her favorites while growing up.

“It was important for me to go back and take my children,” she said. “To show them where I grew up, to let them know what other people have done for me. You have to make the best of your life, no matter what. My sisters and I made good lives after difficult circumstances.”

LOMBARD – Montini Catholic High School students have focused on service this semester, raising money for their sister school in Africa and collecting items for homeless veterans.

Students raised $2,165 Jan. 30 during Catholic Schools Week for Besrate Gabriel School in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, by paying to dress out of uniform. Besrate Gabriel School is a Lasallian school, like Montini.

Each year, Montini students assist their sister school in some way. The ongoing service project, called the De La Salle Street Children Project, serves 25 orphans by providing vocational school for children who are living on the streets in Africa. Money earned by Montini students goes toward school fees, construction costs, books, food and housing for the kids.

The following week, Montini students collected toiletries, hats, gloves and socks during their Homeless Vet-

erans Drive from Feb. 3 through 6 during Turnabout Week.

The drive was sponsored by the school’s National Honor Society. The collections were delivered to Marine Corps veteran Jim Proffitt, who also is the national homeless chairman of VietNow, an organization of veterans helping veterans.

For more than 20 years, Proffitt and his volunteers have handed out lunches to the homeless on the streets of Chicago.

LOMBARD – With 2014 in the rearview mirror, Lombard hosted its State of the Village address Wednesday, providing Village President Keith Giagnorio and guests an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year.

Giagnorio discussed some of the most significant developments in the way of business, infrastructure and more to a room filled with members of the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center.

“If you come away with anything from today’s presentation, I hope it is this: State of our village is strong,” Giagnorio said. “It is strong because we are all partners in mutual success.

It is strong because we have worked together to achieve that success. It is strong because we share the same vision for Lombard: to be the greatest place to raise a family, educate our children and enjoy the greatest quality of life possible.”

Bonds to fund facility projects in District 45

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com In order to fund facility projects across its schools, School District 45 will issue $7 million in bonds by April 21.

The district’s Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to allow staff to issue the bonds, which will not increase the property taxes of residents living within the district. However, the bonds will extend the district’s debt by three years to 2033, said Vickie Nissen, assistant superintendent for finance.

Without the bond issuance, taxes would have decreased for those three years, but instead they will remain at the same level, Nissen said.

Prior to the board’s vote, a public hearing was conducted to gather input from residents on the issuance. No one addressed the board.

Discussions began in the fall to identify facility needs at district schools and the best way to fund the needed projects, Nissen said.

So far, District 45 is prepared to move forward with one project: the replacement of portions of the roof at Westmore Elementary School in Lombard. This work is expected to cost about $390,000, although the district

The roof work likely will start in June.

Other potential projects discussed by District 45 include parking lot repairs, new flooring, kitchen and learning resource center renovations, and more.

It’s undecided at this point which of the projects will be funded by the bonds.

“They’ve been identified but not prioritized,” Nissen said.

The rest of the projects are expected to be prioritized by the end of the current fiscal year June 30.

The district will spend the $7 million during the course of three years.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Board of Education also unanimously approved a contract not to exceed $76,000 with BrainSpaces Inc., a consulting firm that combines architectural and educational experience to plan and design learning environments.

BrainSpaces will help District 45 evaluate how it’s using its facilities in light of the lack of space it has for the students it serves, Nissen said.

The findings of the firm may help the district prioritize the needed projects it has already identified, she said.

A BrainSpaces representative is expected to attend the district’s next Facilities Planning Committee meeting Tuesday.

Although the board members all voted in favor of the contract, some voiced concerns prior to the vote.

“Whenever we do something like this, it is a lot of money for a service,” said board Secretary Jerry Bimber, seeking assurance from staff that the district is confident with what the final product will be from BrainSpaces.

Board member Tracy Vroman asked whether plans developed with the help of BrainSpaces would come to fruition.

“There’s a lot of plans and we spend lots of money on plans, but what are the realities of those actually happening?” Vroman said.

Nissen said District 45 could pursue solutions presented by BrainSpaces, if those ideas are agreeable with the board.

“We’re looking at all options,” she said.

Legislators respond to COD buyout of Breuder

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com Illinois Senate Democrats announced the formation of a new subcommittee to investigate executive compensation at public institutions in a news release Feb. 11.

The announcement comes in the wake of the fallout following the approval of a massive severance package for Col- Robert lege of DuPage President Breuder Robert Breuder.

The subcommittee will be part of the Senate Higher Education Committee and will steer reform efforts and ensure tuition and tax dollars are used responsibly.

It will have three members: Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge; and a Republican who has yet to be selected, according to John Patterson, director of communications for the Illinois Senate Democrats.

The issue was thrust into the spotlight when the College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to approve a $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who will retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. The college will also name its new Homeland Security Education Center after him.

The vote drew outrage from the public, as 400 people attended a board meeting in January about the severance package.

Board Chairwoman Erin Birt said at the meeting the board quantified 1.5 years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to the agreement.

Several local representatives are looking at legislation regarding Breuder’s buyout and others want to prevent similar severance packages in the future.

Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filed two resolutions related to the buyout.

The first is a request for the Illinois Auditor General to perform an audit of the college’s state funding from the past three fiscal years. After Ives’ re-

quest, the college asked the auditor general to move forward with the audit prior to receiving legislative approval.

Ives also is sponsoring a resolution urging trustees to reconsider the buyout and the building naming. At the January meeting, several members of the public expressed an interest in naming the building after Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native awarded the Medal of Honor after dying in combat in Afghanistan.

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced earlier this month he would introduce legislation known as the Breuder Rule, which would ban excessive severance packages at public institutions.

At a House Republicans news conference after the buyout was approved, Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, announced he would pursue legislation banning the use of state money in such severance packages.

At the news conference, legislators also announced other possible laws including cuts in state funding for the college and reductions in the length of board trustees’ terms, which are currently six years.

When reached for comment, college spokesman Joe Moore declined.

D-87 to host athletic code changes forum SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 will host a community forum next month to discuss changes to its athletic code.

The forum will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

March 18 at the administration center, 596 Crescent Blvd.

During the first half of the meeting, the policy committee will lay out the work that has been done to the athletic code so far. The second half will be an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on the changes.

The public input will be considered by the committee at its April 13 meeting.

The committee has been reviewing the proposed changes for the past few months.

The revisions came after the Board of Education denied overturning suspensions for student athletes caught at a party in June where alcohol was being served. Some students received yearlong suspensions, and parents asked the board to examine a policy they deemed too harsh.

Lombard’s budget is balanced, and this year’s general fund budget reduces spending by about 3 percent.

Although the city of Chicago imposed a water rate increase on the village, Lombard’s utility rates still remain below average compared to other communities in the region.

Eye on events The village will pursue the formation of the Lombard Pride Committee to oversee village events to ensure they reflect Lombard’s character.

Giagnorio hopes to get the committee started as soon as possible and attract interested community members from all backgrounds to get involved.

The committee will help to guide the village as it decides the best way to move forward with a summer festival in the future, in light of the cancellation of the Taste of Lombard because of the dissolution of the Lombard Jaycees.

Vision 20/20 aims to transform schools At District 88, our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement. As part of that mission, we continue to stay informed about and up to date with policies, laws and programs that impact our students to ensure we maintain a high-quality educational environment.

Shared accountability: According to Vision 20/20, a quality education for all Illinois students cannot be ensured without the collaboration, compromise and hard work of educators and legislators. The initiative seeks to expand educator responsibility in the legislative process, create a shared accountability model and restructure mandates to allow local districts more flexibility.

Equitable and adequate funding: A focus of Vision 20/20 is to improve equity in the funding model, appropriate adequate dollars for education and allow local school districts the autonomy needed to increase efficiency. This goal would be accomplished through funding education based on local need, stabilizing state funding for education and enhancing district flexibility to increase financial efficiency.

Sanguinetti, Cronin to lead consolidation task force

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Executive Order 15-15 to form the new Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandate Task Force headed by Wheaton resident and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Pacino Sanguinetti during a news conference Feb. 13 at the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst.

Rauner called it an “exciting step towards turning our state around.”

“We need to encourage the streamlining of local governments and of school districts to reduce costs and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” he said. “The [task force] will get the conversation started on how to streamline [and] end duplicative services and improve efficiency.”

Rauner has previously praised consolidation efforts in DuPage, most notably in his State of the State address Feb. 4.

Many of the violations have already been addressed, DuPage County Fair Association Treasurer Jim McGuire said in January, but work remained.

Should the authority be dissolved, the Fair Association would likely receive the about $240,000 the authority had in reserves as well as be the $204,000 the authority receives from the Department of Agriculture each year.

County Board member Jim Zay publicly brought up the idea during a Feb. 10 County Board meeting after speaking to Cronin about it, Zay said.

“We’re the only county in the state that has a fair authority and a fair association, every other county has a fair association,” he said. “So why do we

need that extra layer? We don’t.”

Mike Formento, chairman of the authority, said he supported shutting down the body.

Originally, the authority was set up in the 1980s to be a watchdog of sorts over the money, eventually take over the fair and also eventually accumulate dollars for future real estate development.

The real estate angle never developed, the association remains in control of the fair and Formento said he believed the association could serve as its own check and balance.

“We served our purpose,” he said.

“We have very, very limited funds on hand which should be used now to assist in making whatever improvements need to be done at the fairgrounds themselves.”

The seven members of the fair

authority are unpaid.

Cronin said the issue had been a concern for years, and it was time for a serious look. He said he believed a 2013 state law giving the board the ability to eliminate 13 local government entities extended to the authority. The county had previously dissolved a fire protection district in spring 2014.

“We’ve been concerned about the buildings and the economic viability of the fair as it currently exists for some time now – it all seems to be coming together,” he said.

He believed the board could take action as soon as August after ensuring the county or association could still receive the state funds.

While he hoped the fair could continue, Formento said he wasn’t sure if the Department of Agriculture would continue its funding due to the state’s economic problems.

Should that dry up, the fact the association’s lease was up soon may not matter as it would be hard to continue the fair in its current form.

“It would be regrettable to see the fair go away, but like all things that may end up being the alternative that may be available,” he said.

The latest DuPage County consolidation effort may funnel some much-needed cash into the hands of the County Fairgrounds.

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin confirmed the county was looking at dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority.

The organization is charged with receiving and distributing annual payments from the Illinois Department of Agriculture to the DuPage Fair Association to put on the five-day summer county fair.

Cronin said the authority was an unnecessary layer of government.

“I always was prepared to dissolve the authority, but we wanted to make sure there was a clearer picture about the condition of the buildings and what the future of the fair might be,” he said.

The Fair Association’s lease for the grounds is up in 2020, which has led county officials to look into what they should do with the property and fair.

The county recently received a report detailing suggestions for the future of the fairgrounds as well as more than

Mrs. Campbell was Prudence Kirkpatrick (David) of born in Cuyler, New York on March Rochester and children, Laura (David) of Ankara, Turkey; and 29, 1922, the youngest of four great-grandsons, Julian and Alex, children of Frank and Mabyn Whitmarsh. Mrs. Campbell grew up Jim (Heather) of Kinnelon, NJ, Sarah (Carl); and great-grandson, Thomas on a dairy farm and had her of Rochester, NY, Lydia of mother's green thumb for Rochester, NY and John of gardening and her father's love of Rochester, NY. Mrs. Campbell has music. She played the piano, cello nieces and nephews in Arkansas, and organ and enjoyed singing in Connecticut, Idaho, New York and choirs all her life. Cremation rites have been accorded, and the U.S. Navy will conduct burial at sea with full honors.

It was Jack's wish to donate his brain to assist researchers in finding a cure for Lewy Body Dementia.

Jack also was an ongoing supporter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth Street, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20006-3517.

On January 28, 1961, Owen married Donna Jay in Elmhurst. They raised three children and have celebrated fifty-four years of marriage.

Owen taught mathematics for many years, first at Howard Jr. High School in Wilmette, then twentyfive years at Elmhurst York High School. In 1985, Owen and Rev. Donna moved to Schapville, Illinois where they served the Schapville Zion Presbyterian Church until 2002.

All throughout life, Owen found ways to serve, first by training more than forty Eagle Scouts over twenty-five years, including four Eagle Scouts in the Wrzeszcz

Myth: If you owe a lot of student loan debt, there is no way you can get a mortgage.

Reality: Don’t assume that having a lot of student loan debt automatically disqualifies you from getting a mortgage. The key factor is not necessarily the size of your loan obligation, but the amount of your total monthly debt payments compared to your monthly income. This is called DTI. imortgage, for example, has approved thousands of loans to first-time buyers whose monthly student loan payments were as high as $300, and many more could qualify by increasing their monthly income.

Myth: If your credit score is low, you should not even try to get a mortgage.

Reality: Millions of potential buyers assume they will not be approved for a mortgage even though many could qualify, according to a national survey commissioned by loanDepot LLC. Today, median FICO scores for mortgages to buy a home are 683 for FHA loans and 754 for conventional loans. But hundreds of thousands of buyers with scores lower than those are getting mortgages if they have good income and low levels of debt.

Myth: Buying a home isn’t a good investment.

Reality: Real estate, like other assets, rises and falls based on supply and demand. Over the past two years, home values in most markets have been rising. While all real estate is local, if you

bought a home in March 2012, by August 2014 the national median home price as measured by Case-Shiller had risen 29.6 percent.

Myth: The mortgage-interest tax deduction is going away.

Reality: Though the deduction has its critics, most observers believe it is unlikely that Congress will eliminate the mortgage interest deduction any time soon. Many states also allow homeowners to write off the interest they pay on their mortgages from their state income taxes. Check with your accountant or CPA on if you can qualify for this type of tax deduction.

Myth: I’m about to get married and the wedding is so expensive I won’t be able to buy a home.

Reality: According to TheKnot, the average wedding has 138 guests who typically give a gift valued at $100 each. That’s $13,800 in spatulas, baking pans and other things. If every guest contributed to a Down Payment Fund, you could have enough saved for a down payment on a $276,000 home in San Diego.

“These are just a few of the myths about home buying that surface frequently in our conversations with first-time buyers,” says Thompson. “I always advise potential buyers, especially first- time buyers, to get in touch with one of our local imortgage loan officers if they’re interested in straight answers to specific questions about financing a home. “Buying a first home can be exciting and stressful for most young buyers, especially the financing process,” says Clete Thompson, vice president at imortgage, a division of loanDepot LLC. “There’s a lot of paperwork, many choices, and sometimes budgets don’t stretch very far. Our licensed loan officers specialize in helping first-time buyers navigate the home finance process, which can be stressful if you’re not working with a seasoned professional.”

To help first-time buyers, the experts at imortgage are uncovering prevalent myths about financing a home purchase: Myth: It takes a 20 percent down payment to buy a home.

Reality: Required down payment amounts vary by type of loan and they are on average much smaller than people think. Last year, the median down payment for all first-time buyers was 6 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. One reason is that many first-time buyers use FHA loans, which require down payments as low as 3 to 3.5 percent. VA loans require nothing down for qualified veterans or active military personnel. If you want to take out a conventional loan, many lenders do require 20 percent down, but you can lower that percentage with private mortgage insurance. Willowbrook close to striking Gold

Overtime, come-from-behind, down to the final shot. Add high-scoring shootout to the list.

The Warriors beat Proviso East 9694 to extend their winning streak to 14 games. Sophomore sensation Alonzo Verge Jr. dropped 41 points on the Pirates in an incredibly high-tempo game.

“This has been fun,” Verge said. “I love playing with my teammates. We’re getting better chemistry every day.”

Willowbrook (20-6, 8-3 West Suburban Gold) beat Downers Grove South 74-58 Saturday, the fifth win during the streak that came by double digits.

Tuesday’s win against the Pirates kept the Warriors tied with Morton atop the conference.

Both teams play tonight to close out conference play. Willowbrook hosts Leyden. The Eagles are the last team to beat Willowbrook, but also a team the Warriors beat during the streak, 57-55 in overtime Jan. 23 in Franklin Park.

Morton hosts Proviso East.

“It means everything,” Verge said of winning conference. “It hasn’t been done in a long time so we’re trying to make that accomplishment.”

The Proviso East game was backand-forth. Willowbrook led 15-6 early, but the Pirates took a 36-26 lead midway through the second quarter. The teams were tied at 61-61 after three quarters, and that’s when the game picked up.

There were 68 combined points in the fourth quarter alone. The Pirates led 7568 before Willowbrook surged ahead 8677, but even that lead wasn’t safe. Proviso East regained a 94-93 lead in the final minute before two free throws by Verge and a crucial charge taken by Micah Wil-

liams turned the game for Willowbrook.

Proviso East got off a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer, but it missed.

Verge scored 18 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter, out dueling Proviso East standout Kalin Fisher’s 33 points. Jake Bruns scored 18 points, Kyle Rushing added 11 and Kevin Miller had 10 points.

It was Verge’s third game scoring more than 40 points this season.

“I try not to say too much because I just want to keep him humble,” coach Chris Perkins said. “I know he’s a sophomore and I don’t want him to get complacent. I just want him to keep working, but some of the moves he does you’re just like ‘I didn’t draw that up. Wow.’ He kind of takes your breath away. “I’m improving every match and

hopefully I’ll get a rematch in the state finals,” Rowland said. “I think I can make it and beat him hopefully.”

Getting back to state for the junior is significant because he knows what it’s like to be a wrestler at state.

“Just the experience of being under all the lights and the feeling of being on the State Farm Center floor, it’s the greatest feeling in wrestling,” Rowland said.

CAROL STREAM – D’Andre Johnson knows he only has one more shot to make his mark at the state wrestling meet.

The Glenbard East senior won his second straight sectional title Saturday at Glenbard North to book his third trip to state.

“I feel kind of emo- D’Andre tional because it’s my Johnson last one and my season is coming to an end,” Johnson said. “It’s just getting emotional, but it’s a lot of fun to keep winning.”

Johnson pinned York’s Tommy Helton in the 285-pound title match. The final was Johnson’s third pin in three matches at the sectional. He entered the state meet, which began Thursday in Champaign, with a 26-1 record.

Johnson also made state as a sophomore and junior. Last year he went 1-2 at state, which was below his own expectations. This year he is hoping to end his memorable career with a bang.

“My goal is have fun and get that state title,” Johnson said. “I’m feeling really good. I’m ready to put it all on the line.”

Johnson said he plans to wrestle in college, but is still undecided on where he will go. A strong showing at state could go a long way towards attracting some college programs, and his previous state experience will give him an edge in Champaign.

“I think that does help me a lot because now I’m not as nervous,” Johnson said. “Two years ago, I was very nervous. Last year, I was more accommodated to it and this year I’m going to be ready to go.”

Glenbard East also had five other wrestlers compete at the sectional.

Sophomore Nick Donovan was one match away from qualifying for state at 106 pounds. Drew Fugiel, Fred Morris, Sean Corey and Bryan Andrews also wrestled at the sectional for the Rams.

CAROL STREAM – Before he was even a high school student, Jack Jessen attended the state wrestling meet in Champaign and dreamed of being there himself.

Jessen’s dream became a reality on Saturday when the Willowbrook freshman won the Glenbard North sectional at 170 pounds to book his place at the state tournament, which started Thursday and concludes Saturday.

Jessen already set the school record for takedowns in a season and is hoping for more.

“I can’t believe I’m making it down as a freshman to Champaign,” Jessen said. “It’s just an amazing goal to achieve so far and I can achieve way more than I have.”

He entered the state meet with a 46-2 record and faced Highland Park’s John Ciancio in Thursday’s first round.
