The Taste of Lombard will not take place this year at Madison Meadow Park in Lombard. However, a fireworks display will be shown on the Fourth of July.

Despite Taste cancellation, fireworks to return to Madison Meadow SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – Madison Meadow Park in Lombard is not filled with the familiar carnival rides, food vendor tents and musical performers that residents are used to at this time of year. But even though the Taste of Lombard was canceled, the village’s annual fireworks still will fire off on the Fourth of July. The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m. Free transportation between designated parking locations and Madison Meadow Park will be provided from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Shuttle buses will pick up and drop off residents at Madison School, 150 W. Madison St.; Pleasant Lane School, 401 N. Main St., and Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St. The shuttle buses are provided courtesy of the village of Lombard and funded through the Hotel/Motel tax fund, and a handicap-accessible bus will be available. Exact pick-up and drop-off locations at the sites will be marked with signs. Lombard police officers will maintain crowd control within Madison Meadow Park, and they will be stationed at certain intersections to assist in traffic control. Officers will enforce all state and local laws, particularly those related to the use of firecrack-

The Lombard Fire Department will post a rescue ambulance and one of its fire trucks inside the park to handle injuries or fire situations. The department reminds residents that firecrackers, bottle rockets and Roman candles are not allowed in Illinois under state regulations. The annual Taste of Lombard festival was canceled in January after the Lombard Jaycees, which organized the event for 32 years, dissolved in October. After the village received competing requests to host the event from two groups with ties to the Jaycees, officials decided it was best to take some

time to re-evaluate the village’s options. Since that time, Lombard formed the Lombard Pride Committee to advise the Village Board on matters related to special events and community festivals. The committee will develop recommendations for a community festival to be held in future years and other matters concerning special events within the village. The committee will meet for the first time at 7 p.m. July 9 at Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave. Its members include Ellen Bachner, Brittney Conway, Bob Difino, Jenelle Hardtke, Jeffrey Lenz, Melissa Schmitz, student member Dana Schwiewe, Dave Kundrot of the Lombard Park District and Yvonne Invergo of the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The members appointed to this committee form a diverse collection of Lombardians offering unique points of view and firsthand experience with event planning, project management, fundraising and past Lombard events from a community perspective,” Lombard Village President and committee Chairman Keith Giagnorio said in a village news release. “We look forward to their successful collaboration and recommendations regarding the future of Lombard’s community events.”

Because of the Independence Day holiday, the offices of Suburban Life will be closed Friday, July 3.

She decided to take the train home and told her husband to meet her at the Wheaton train station to take her to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. But the baby had other plans. “My water broke near the Elmhurst stop, and my contractions were getting

stronger and closer together,” she said. “I was so embarrassed. The train conductor called 911 and told them to be waiting for me at the Lombard stop.” She was able to get off the train and into the back of the ambulance just in the nick of time. “I was in shock; I didn’t know what to think,” she said of delivering the baby in an ambulance. “I knew I didn’t have a choice. I wasn’t really scared because the paramedics reassured me, and they seemed confident.” Once her daughter, her second child, was born without complications, they were able to bypass the emergency room and go straight to the mom

I’m so grateful they were there waiting or else my husband would’ve delivered the baby.” Sally said delivering the baby and getting the Stork Award are significant events for the firefighters. “We don’t get to choose our calls, but when you get to be involved in a positive call like that ... it’s pretty neat,” he said. “It was a big night for the firefighters to receive that award.”

LOMBARD – Everything happened so fast for Joanna Koppang that she wasn’t able to properly thank the six Lombard firefighters who safely delivered her daughter in an ambulance across from the Lombard Metra station in January. But the Wheaton resident got her chance to do just that June 18, when she presented the men with a Stork Award. “It was nice to present them with that,” Koppang said. “I was glad to be able to thank them and show my appreciation in person. I told them they did a great job, and they told me I did a great job.” Koppang and her family awarded the men with the pink stork pin at a Lombard Village Board meeting June 18. Recipients included firefighters Tim Hillesheim, John Studnicka, Dale Farris, Joe Kaforski, Galen Cardott and Lt. Tony Sally. Sally said his men deserved the honor. “They were able to keep cool in a stressful situation that most of them had never been in,” he said. “When they do something like that, you need to reward them. When something good like this happens, you let them know they did it well. I want them to be recognized.” Sally said all Lombard firefighters are trained as paramedics, so he was confident they would be able to handle the delivery. “This was one of those calls where you know your training pays off and you’re doing something good,” he said. This was the first time Studnicka delivered a baby, but he said he wasn’t nervous. “Everyone felt comfortable doing it because we have training on labor and birth at least once a year,” he said. “Everything went well; the baby was healthy. So we couldn’t ask for anything different.” Farris said it was a “great experience” for him. It also was his first time

The village of Lombard’s contractor will resurface East St. Charles Road from Westmore-Meyers Avenue to Grace Street, and Grace Street from Prairie Avenue to Washington Boulevard. At least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. However, delays are expected because of partial lane closures, the release stated. Construction will affect travel through the intersection of St. Charles Road and Grace Street, including for pedestrians. Trucks and other heavy equipment will be entering and leaving the work zones. Cellphones are not permitted within work zones.

LOMBARD – The Lombard Police Department will conduct roadside safety checkpoints July 3 as part of a statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The intensified enforcement against impaired drivers and seat belt law violators is an effort to minimize the disproportionate number of traffic deaths caused by alcohol and failure to buckle up that occur during overnight hours on holiday weekends, according to a village news release. Seat belt violations include passengers. Lombard police held a similar checkpoint Aug. 29, 2014, as part of the Labor Day Weekend Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. This checkpoint resulted in 298 cars stopped, one driving under the influence arrest, two for marijuana and drug paraphernalia, two seat belt citations, six arrests for driving with a suspended/revoked license and five for driving without a license, the release stated. For information, contact Lombard Deputy Police Chief Tom Wirsing at 630-620-4480.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

much value to the college’s curriculum. Ellen Roberts, director of business affairs, said school food service provider Sodexo is not interested in taking the space because of its poor location for foot traffic and the provider’s disinterest in a high end restaurant, building investments and the negative publicity surrounding Waterleaf’s finances. She said the space turns down about five events each month because of lack of availability and could be used for more conferences. She also said population and employment in DuPage County are trending upward – a good financial sign for restaurants – and that the college could generate revenue by renting Waterleaf’s space to another restaurant for use. Stewart said culinary and hospitality faculty were “erupting” with possibilities for curricula using Waterleaf’s facilities. Given the opportunity, faculty and outside advisers would look at implementing a variety of new classes as early as spring 2016 to take advantage of the real-world feel of the space. She said Waterleaf is a valuable representation of a professional kitchen and restaurant, and its fare could be better

tailored to fit curriculum options and make it more accessible for the community. Should the opportunity present itself, Stewart said, she is open to having more catering and full restaurant nights. Tim Meyer, one of the school’s culinary program coordinators, said students love the experience of working in the kitchen and faculty likely could handle day-to-day operations at Waterleaf, possibly eliminating several positions. “It gives great opportunities – when students are in the kitchen, it’s a very tight space, they have to stay organized,” he said. “It forces them to do things that they normally have to do in the industry.” Multiple residents expressed support for increased student involvement at Waterleaf during public comment, and the board seemed in favor of additional curricula. “This sounds like a really wonderful option for the Waterleaf,” trustee Dianne McGuire said. “We are really excited about it.” The board will take a formal vote in the future on the next steps for the restaurant.

eshields@shawmedia.com A review of the College of DuPage’s accreditation has been delayed after the Higher Learning Commission postponed a trip to the school scheduled for June 29 and 30. The postponement was announced June 28 and was attributed to Jackson College President Daniel Phelan’s cancellation of his involvement with the College of DuPage accreditation review, according to a school news release. The college’s acting interim president, Joseph Collins, said in the release

the visit is expected to be rescheduled about a month from the original dates. “While we are disappointed that there will be a delay, we understand the HLC’s desire to ensure that the team members are suited to give us an honest evaluation,” he said. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet June 29 to have a discussion related to the commission’s review process, but that meeting was canceled. In a blog post June 27, Edgar County Watchdogs stated Phelan was a “clone” of College of DuPage President Robert Breuder, who was placed on administrative leave in April.

In the post, the watchdog group stated Phelan has received a vote of no confidence from Jackson’s faculty association and has been criticized for lavishly spending money on wine and food. Similar complaints have been lodged against Breuder. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, a vocal opponent of Breuder, said in the release that Phelan’s decision to opt out of the review process will set the standard for who will review the school’s accreditation. “Based on this occurrence, we will insist on closely examining the backgrounds of all potential HLC reviewers

to ensure a proper assessment of the college that protects all of the educational work done by our faculty and students, on behalf of our taxpayers,” she said. Higher Learning Commission Public Information Officer John Hausaman did not immediately return multiple calls seeking comment on the review’s postponement. The college received a letter May 5 from the commission on its accreditation being placed under review. The commission cited investigations related to institutional finance and ethics violations as being among the reasons for the review.

The on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant at College of DuPage may undergo some drastic changes in the near future. The 6,000-square-foot upscale establishment in the school’s Culinary & Hospitality Center has come under fire in recent months for costing the college more than $530,000 in operations each year since it opened in October 2011 and being the site of controversial meals for trustees. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the restaurant represents a “financial drain” for the school. “We’re really interested in redirecting where the Waterleaf is going, and so a thought-out analysis … is very important,” she said. Trustee Charles Bernstein led a committee to examine the future of the restaurant, delivering its findings at the board’s June 25 meeting before staff offered options for Waterleaf’s future. Currently, students staff the front and back of the restaurant Monday and Tuesday nights, while Waterleaf oper-

ates as a professional restaurant the rest of the week. Bernstein said the school’s expansion to a full restaurant came at the behest of President Robert Breuder, who now is on administrative leave. “From everything I’ve been able to determine, Waterleaf existed, was created, exists today, because of one man,” he said. “It was the dream and the ambition of one man, one man who wanted a Michelin star. It had and has no educational role.” Staff presented three options for change at Waterleaf: convert the dining area to three small classrooms, open the restaurant to lessees and events, and repurpose the space as an academic lab. A staff report stated repurposing the dining area and bar as classrooms – including removal of finishes and partitions, as well as ductwork and electric work – would run $378,400 to $516,000. Adding two classrooms in the kitchen area would bring the total to about $1 million to $1.3 million. However, Dean for Business and Technology Donna Stewart said the additional classroom space would not add

Advocates help break OUR VIEW the cycle of violence Illinois residents are pawns Ten-year-old Aaron didn’t know why he wet the bed at night, but he was terrified of what his father would do if he found out. During weekend visitations, Aaron’s father had put his son, a diabetic, in charge of monitoring his own blood sugar. The young boy would sometimes forget – resulting in the COMMUNITY bed-wetting incidents. When VOICE Aaron returned home from Maureen seeing his father one weekMcGuire end, his mother saw bruises. The next day, she met with the court advocates at Family Shelter Service. Located in a space provided by the county on the courthouse’s second floor, Family Shelter Service court advocates assist people who are seeking an order of protection. They may include victims of elder abuse, people terrorized by a former partner or even parents applying on behalf of their teen who found themselves in a violent dating relationship. Because many of the people we help are traumatized by their experience, the process of obtaining an order of protection can be daunting. For Aaron’s mother, the most important thing in her life was her son and his health. She knew his well-being depended on what she did next. When they appeared in court, the judge asked the child to speak on his own behalf and his mother whispered to him to be strong. Through tears, Aaron told the judge he loved his dad but didn’t feel comfortable with him alone. The judge decreed the father would only be permitted supervised visits at the DuPage County Family Center in Wheaton. After the order of protection was granted, Aaron’s mother told us having a Family Shelter Service court advocate by her side was the only thing that kept her going. Several months later, she reported Aaron’s health had improved significantly and his blood sugar had been consistently level for the first time. Last year, our court advocates helped more than 1,000 people apply for orders of protection. in a giant state chess game

The mighty struggle underway over the Illinois state budget is eerily similar to the game of chess. The comparison is both apt and sad. The opponents are the entrenched Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and the minority Republicans. They represent the kings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks on the chess board. And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans? Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in the great budgetary battle, join the club. In chess, pawns are manipulated to advance the interests of the major pieces. Pawns don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. They are routinely imperiled and sacrificed to benefit the more powerful chess pieces. Likewise, in the budget battle, average citizens are manipulated to advance the interests of the politicians. If the public is imperiled by budgetary proposals and brinkmanship, it’s no real concern to the leadership class. The object of chess is to use one’s intelligence and experience to defeat the opponent. The same goes for politics, which unfortunately carries over into governance, and which is the crux of the budget battle: Will the state continue to live beyond its means, or not? The budget approved by the Democrats would spend $3 billion to $4 billion more than it takes in. Democratic leaders did that on purpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax

increases to cover the difference. For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the chronic overspending, vetoed most of the budget June 25, and awaits the arrival of Democrats at the bargaining table to negotiate for what he wants: some “pro-business” legislation and structural reforms to government that would weaken Democrats’ stranglehold on power. He previously announced more than $800 million in temporary cuts that are set to kick in with the new fiscal year that starts this week. What are the pawns’ roles in all of this? Average Illinoisans have spoken up about how proposed budget cuts would negatively affect them. Some have done so on their own; others have been trotted out by politicians. Either way, their stories are compelling. Senior citizens, the poor, those with physical and mental disabilities and others who rely on state funding are imperiled. The uncertainty is difficult to bear. In chess, pawns do have one golden opportunity to triumph. If a pawn can advance to the end of the board, it wins a powerful promotion and gains great influence. The opposing player tries to stop that from happening at all costs. In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisans must put politicians in check and exert their combined influence to demand that fiscal prudence and the best interests of the people be part of the new budget. For politicians who just don’t get it, the public can deal with them at next election. Checkmate.

SOUND OFF

The American experiment as a constitutional republic has endured for nearly 225 years. It was a good run and now it’s ending. All three branches of our government are now writing law. The Congress is the only branch constitutionally charged with the responsibility of law writing. But the president claims to be able to do it with a phone and a pen, as he put it. And the Supreme Court has already rewritten “Obamacare” twice and gotten away with it. And if that’s not enough to do us in, when President Hillary takes over, her family foundation will be in position to sell what’s left of a once proud nation’s property and honor.

It’s amazing how numbers can be manipulated to support one’s point of view. Despite what the teachers union and current/former teachers say about teachers being underpaid, it’s just not true. Of course, whenever you start a new job with limited experience, you start at the lower end of the pay scale. No one is questioning average starting salaries for teachers. What is out of line is the total compensation package for Illinois teachers, which has had a huge impact on the pension crisis facing the state of Illinois.

Guidelines ■ When calling, please speak clearly and slowly. Keep messages to a maximum of 60 seconds. ■ Callers may speak on topics anonymously. ■ We will not publish attacks of a personal nature or those accusing persons of crimes or illegal conduct that have not been previously published or documented. ■ We will not print calls commenting on signed Letters to the Editor. ■ Sound Off comments are the opinions of our readers and, as such, should not be taken as fact.

In 2012, the average teacher salary in Illinois was almost $70,000. In addition to generous vacation time, guaranteed pension benefits and retiree health plans, they only have to work about 38 weeks a year. That’s one-fifth less than a full-time employee in the private sector. Underperforming teachers are almost impossible to fire since tenure is typically granted after only four years. How many of you wish you had that type of job security and compensation package?

EYE SAFETY AT WORK

Each day, approximately 2,000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. The majority of these injuries result from small particles or objects striking or abrading the eye. To guard against these preventable injuries, workers should wear safety eyewear whenever there is any chance that machines or operations present the hazard of chemicals, flying objects, or other potentially harmful situations. Industrial-thickness glass, plastic, and polycarbonate lenses meet or exceed the requirements of the eye protection standard. While glass lenses provide good scratch resistance and can accommodate a broad range of prescriptions, polycarbonate lenses are lighter in weight and are superior to glass and many other plastics in terms of strength and impact resistance. Safety glasses may have prescription lenses or non-prescription lenses. The optical boutique at SKOWRON EYE CARE is available to accommodate all of your eyewear needs. We offer the latest in frame styles and lens technology at competitive prices and can provide the thinnest, lightest, most smudge and scratch resistant lenses to fit almost any style frame you desire. We’re invested in the technology to make exam findings easier and more accurate from toddlers to seniors. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Protective eyewear should be selected for its appropriateness for a given task.

There are powerful interests at College of DuPage who lost much and have much more to lose. Solution: Destroy the messenger, Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton. The board policies on campaigning do not have the force of law and are unenforceable. Board policy does not trump First Amendment protections. COD trustees are not paid, hence, the charge of campaigning using compensated time should be seen for what it is, a blatant attempt at political payback. Keep fighting for us, Kathy.

The match also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-old Huerta and outstanding play by defender Abby Erceg, who made her return to the Red Stars lineup after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned her third clean sheet of the season behind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth minute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the left and battled to maintain possession before smartly centering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidestepped goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the opening strike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to level the score a mere four minutes later, but Shawna Gordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the area went just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row by Chicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back was in the right spot again to block a 21st-minute cross from the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. However, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, who nearly put away the opportunity with a left-footed attempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie the match at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle was in on goal off a beautiful through ball from deep inside her own half, only to have Red Stars outside back Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg and Samantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managed to get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide of the far post from the left side of the area. In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponents pay dearly for the missed opportunities with a beautiful combination play doubling the lead for Head Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon took full advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huerta down the center, and the rookie sensation unselfishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-in from the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the right foot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nadim through on goal, but Red Stars keeper Michele Dalton left her feet for an exceptional block on the powerful driven effort. That set the stage for Chicago to increase their lead just after the hour mark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attack found Hoy entering the box with time on her hands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shot that took a slight deflection and trickled inside the left upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huerta nearly added a fourth for her squad when she exploited some indecisive defending by toe-poking the ball away from Maya Hayes and took unleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stop by Cameron. Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc in the closing stages of the match, dribbling past two defenders on the left side of the box and firing from close range, only for Cameron to produce a point-blank reaction save. The rebound fell into the path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt on goal forced another diving save from the Sky Blue FC goalkeeper. Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty area whistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, her teammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what would have been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year. On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, the striker tracked back to meet the ball near the edge of the box and smashed it off the crossbar by way of a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the final opportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for its fifth victory of 2015. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to make it consecutive wins when they travel to take on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’s next home game is a July 18 meeting with Boston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars. com/tickets.

Baba Karam’s specialty is tasty kabobs

VILLA PARK – A knock on some eateries is that they offer so many menu items, the cooking staff can never really master any of them. It’s precisely the opposite at Baba Karam. With a focus on Middle Eastern fare, the restaurant in Villa Park keeps the menu simple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft. I stopped by Baba Karam on a recent evening with a dining companion. Hungry for some protein, I was hankering for something with beef or chicken. But first, to whet our appetite, we started with a hummus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeas and tahini sauce, was filled with flavor, and made the accompanying pita bread disappear quickly. Our server asked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the portions matched up perfectly. For our entrees, we both zeroed in on the main section of the menu: the kabobs. Chicken, ground beef, lamb shank and a few different preparations of filet mignon were offered. I went for the one labeled “barg,” described as thinly sliced filet mignon marinated in saffron and spice. My companion opted for the boneless chicken, similarly marinated in saffron. We both ordered the dill rice; the other sides available were white rice and shirazi salad. The latter features cucumber, tomato and onion in a dressing of olive oil, black pepper, lime juice and mint. I definitely had my hankering for some meat fulfilled, and then some. The filet mignon was as delicious and tender as I expected, and I probably wolfed it down quicker than is strictly acceptable for a nice restaurant. Fortunately for me, my dining companion loved her chicken kabob but couldn’t finish the serving, so I got to sample a sizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the barg kabob was, I think the chicken

Gymnastics leads Warriors’ highlights Glenbard East By DAN SANTAROMITA

Willowbrook’s Keawe Winstead competes on pommel horse May 16 in the individual finals at the state meet. Winstead tied for sixth on the event and helped the Warriors place fourth as a team.

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Willowbrook had a strong spring season in a number of different sports. Before looking ahead to fall sports in August, it’s time to look back on what the Warriors accomplished in the spring. Here’s a list of some of the best Warriors’ moments from spring sports, in no particular order:

Bill Ackerman file photo backerman@shawmedia.com

Boys gymnastics takes fourth at state

For the first time since 1991, Willowbrook’s boys gymnastics team made it to state. The Warriors took fourth place in the team standings and had a number of individuals with strong performances. Leading the way was freshman Adam Sousa, who placed fourth in the all-around and fifth on pommel horse to win two medals. Sousa, the only freshman to earn all-state honors, also tied for sixth on the parallel bars and floor exercise and tied for eighth on high bar. Keawe Winstead tied for sixth on pommel horse and Bret Golz tied for sixth on vault. Quotable: “A few years ago, they were actually thinking about getting rid of the program. I just hope that now people in our district see how serious we are and how we can come together as one team and one family competitively and make a mark on the state,” Sousa said.

Winning senior class leads softball

Sam Schmidt and Alyssa Ressinger have drawn plenty of attention to the Willowbrook softball program since they arrived on campus. Both were all-state this year and Schmidt now holds a number of program re-

cords and even climbed up the state’s career leaderboards. In addition, Cheyenne Brunig, Alex Kassal, Delaney Pelsor, Courtney Ruchala and Erin Sporer were among the seniors to help lift the program. Quotable: “As a senior class they’ve won 84 games together. They’ve done a lot,” coach Rachel Karos said.

The doubles team of Brooke Bimber and Sydney Planz qualified for the state badminton tournament by taking second at the Hinsdale South sectional. Once at state, the senior pair lost in the first round, but rebounded with two wins in the consolation bracket.

Baseball ties school record for wins

Relay, 2 athletes make state track and field

The Warriors were a force on the diamond with pitchers Cam Zunkel, Chris Roycroft and Matt Pizur leading the way. Trey Jones, Luke Schuemer and Matt Garbacz also had strong seasons. Willowbrook tied the school record for wins with a 26-10 record and took second in the West Suburban Gold.

Willowbrook’s 4x800-meter relay team of Melissa Johnston, Diana Marin, Ashley Tegtmeyer and Grace Guthrie ran at the Class 3A state meet. In addition, sophomore Kyla Denwood (discus) and junior Shannon Jones (800) also represented the Warriors in Charleston.

Following a four-year career at Wofford, which included back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, Glenbard East graduate Lee Skinner is ready to embark on his professional career. The 6-foot-6 forward signed a contract with Welser Basketball Club Raiffeisen Wels in Austria. Skinner broke the news by sharing a photo on his Instagram account with a statement reading, “Just signed my first pro contract and couldn’t be more excited. Leaving for Austria in August!” WBC is located in the city of Wels, which is located in northern Austria and has a population of about 60,000 people. The club has been in existence since 2000 and won the Austrian league title in 2009. Skinner was an All-Southern Conference selection and was named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player during his senior season at Wofford. He started all 35 games for the Terriers and averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He played in every game Wofford played for the past four years and totaled 103 starts in his career.

State track medals among spring sports highlights for Montini By DAN SANTAROMITA

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

Jenna Weidacher, Emma Makowski and Madeline Jamrozek immediately embraced her. Salzbrunn also medaled by taking fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and placed 11th in the long jump. Quotable: “I’ve had dreams of crossing that line. It’s real. I don’t even know. It’s mind blowing,” Salzbrunn said.

LOMBARD – Now that it’s summer school is out, but there is still time to look back on the spring sports season before looking ahead to fall sports in August. As usual Montini had some impressive high points this spring. Here’s a list of some of the Broncos’ best from spring sports, in no particular order: West medals for boys track The Montini boys also medaled at Distance relay finally breaks through state track. Baseball wins back-to-back regional titles

With senior pitcher Sean Frontzak among the team’s leaders, Montini baseball was able to win a regional title for the second year in a row. Frontzak gave up an unearned run in the 3-1 regional final win against St. Patrick. Montini’s season ended in the next round, but a strong foundation is in place for the future with nine sophomores and a freshman getting some experience on the postseason roster. Quotable: “Winning a regional was one of our first goals and we were able to accomplish that. To have our young guys ... experience the playoff

Softball keeps regional streak going

Montini softball won a regional title for the third year in a row. A deep, powerful lineup and the play of twoway pitcher Lauren Trojnar helped the Broncos become one of the most feared teams in the area. The Broncos had a 28-6 record, setting a new program record for wins.

Girls lacrosse makes another run

One of the most consistent programs at Montini has become the girls lacrosse program. The Broncos made it to a quarterfinal in the state tournament for the sixth straight year, only falling to eventual state champion Loyola.

Scott Darling by the numbers REGULAR SEASON STATS n 14 games played n 9-4 record n 1.94 goals against average PLAYOFF STATS n 5 games played n 2.21 GAA

By SCOTT SCHMID

sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2014. Having made a variety of stops on the minor league circuit, the 26-year old got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators. Darling went on to play in 14 regular season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Blackhawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons. In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the cup as a member of the Blackhawks. On June 29, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Staff writer Scott Schmid was part of a press conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion. What has the last couple of weeks been like and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup Champion? Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like

n 3-1 record

To get to bring the cup back to Lemont, how special is that? Darling: This is where I spent a lot of my life, these are the streets where I use to ride my bike. To see how excited the people are, it means a lot. I never forgot where I came from. I call this home, I always have my whole life. I played Little League here, I played for the Lemont Indians. I was [just like] those kids out there, and to see them all here, it’s exciting. I’ve had my opportunity with the cup last week with the team. This is a great opportunity to share it with everyone else.

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Scott Darling carries the Stanley Cup into the Lemont Park District’s CORE building June 29 for his day with the cup. Thousands of fans lined up to see the Lemont native and the trophy in person.

How did your new tattoo of the Stanley Cup come about? Darling: I’m a fan of tattoos. I always wanted an excuse to get a Stanley Cup tattoo and now I have a great one.

What’s the last year been like? Darling: The whole year, from start to finish, like I’ve said before, it was such an honor to sign with the team and I was thrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chicago and to have a role in the playoffs and winning the cup, it’s been unbelievable.

What is your mindset heading into next season? Darling: I’m hungry as ever. I want to stay here, I want to be here for a long time. I’ll take a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks later, the season will start. I’m excited to get to camp and I still have to earn my spot for next year.
