Work begins to add 92 spaces to Hammerschmidt Lot
Construction workers dig a trench Aug. 12 as part of the Hammerschmidt Lot expansion project.
By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LOMBARD onstruction is underway on the Hammerschmidt Lot expansion project, which will bring 92 more parking spaces for Metra commuters and downtown Lombard shoppers. The spaces will be available to commuters on weekdays for a daily fee, and they will be free of charge in the evenings and on weekends for shoppers. The new parking lot will be east of the Metra station on St. Charles Road, and it is a westward expansion of the existing lot. Dave Gorman, assistant director of public works for the village of Lombard, said the village has been hearing comments that residents want more parking spaces. “We did a study that looked at the use of spaces, where there was a need and where there wasn’t,“ he said. “The business community also wanted more parking, and we know commuters would appreciate more spaces.” Gorman said the new lot will have LED lighting and permeable pavers, which will help with stormwater runoff. He described the pavers as concrete bricks that have corner openings to absorb stormwater.
