LOMBARD – Patty Chirumbolo said she knew reading up on Us Weekly and keeping up with “The Real Housewives” series would pay off one day, and that day finally came when she was selected as a contestant on season three of the NBC show “Hollywood Game Night” in March. The episode is scheduled to air Aug. 11, but she isn’t quite sure yet how she’d like to celebrate her small TV debut, said Chirumbolo, a teacher at Hawthorne Elementary School in Elmhurst and a Lombard resident. Chirumbolo said she and her husband, Joe, have been hooked on the show ever since it started, and they play along to all of the featured games, quizzing each other on movies, TV shows, Hollywood couples and more. Joe said whenever they play his wife gets most of the answers correct, which is why he wasn’t surprised at all when he found out she was chosen to compete. A couple of weeks into the casting process, Chirumbolo received word she was a finalist and was asked to travel to NBC Studios in Los Angeles for a final in-person interview and filming. “I couldn’t believe it,” Chirumbolo said. “We watch the show all the time. I just can’t believe it.” “Hollywood Game Night” pits two contestants who are on teams with three celebrities each against each other in five rounds of party games that test their knowledge in pop and celebrity news. The contestant on the winning team collects a $25,000 cash prize, while celebrities on the winning team earn $10,000 for a charity of their choice. Actors Justin Long, Kevin Smith and Haley Joel Osment rounded out Chirumbolo’s team. She said the opposing team included comedian Jay Pharoah and actors Elisha Cuthbert and Brandon T. Jackson.

Check it out Watch Patty Chirumbolo on “Hollywood Game Night” at 9 p.m. Aug. 11 on NBC. Chirumbolo said she was a little worried to be on a team with Silent Bob – a memorable character played by Kevin Smith – since there was no room for silence in this game, but she knew Smith, who is also a director, would be an asset for any questions involving movies. What surprised her most about the experience was the casual conver-
sations she had with her teammates during breaks while filming the episode. Chirumbolo said she had to keep reminding herself to “just be cool” and “not interrogate them” about their personal lives or past work. Chirumbolo said she was careful not to mention “The Sixth Sense” around Osment, especially since that movie was filmed ages ago. “We were all just there to have fun,” she said. While Chirumbolo cannot reveal the results of the show, she assures friends, family and viewers one thing: “I was born to play this game. This game was made for me.”

“The new smoothie bar is now right there,” she said. “We only use freshly cut fruit, so they’re really popular.” Donna Eisner, Lombard Chamber of Commerce membership coordinator, said she’s “thrilled” that Noodles “Pho” U is growing and becoming a strong presence on Main Street. “It’s important to have a variety of dining options in Lombard, and not many places have Vietnamese restaurants,” she said. “Their new signage looks great, and we’re hoping even more people in the area will come to experience the food.” Cecil said while the restaurant serves primarily Vietnamese food, there are other cuisines on the menu. “We have a special niche in the type

Truong has an interesting history, and he tries to bring his experiences into the restaurant.” Truong said Vietnamese cuisine tastes a little different than other Asian cuisines. He said it’s based on “pho,” which means “noodles” in Vietnamese. He said his restaurant only cooks with fresh vegetables and doesn’t use MSG. There are plenty of beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian dishes on the menu. “We don’t precook our food and just reheat it,” he said. “We cook it the way the customer wants it. It comes out fresh, hot, and the flavor is more boun-

He said his family was living in a refugee camp in South Vietnam when the Archdiocese of Rockford sponsored them to come to the U.S. Truong began working in the food service industry shortly after arriving here when his family began an Asian food importing and distributing business. “I didn’t know what freedom was like before, so this was paradise to us,” he said. “I am so grateful to be here. With the help of employees and members of the Lombard Chamber, Noodles “Pho” U owner Trung Truong cuts the ribbon Aug. 4 for the grand reopening and expansion of the Lombard restaurant.

LOMBARD – Trung Truong loves to share his Vietnamese culture and food with Lombard residents at his restaurant, Noodles “Pho” U. And after a major renovation, Truong can’t wait to show off his expanded dining room to his customers. “There are not a lot of Vietnamese places in the area and Americans’ taste buds are becoming more diversified, so they’re open to trying new food,” said Truong, the owner of Noodles “Pho” U. “When I first opened six years ago, we were a lot smaller. But our customer base continues to grow, so it was a great opportunity to expand and serve more people.” The restaurant, 1239 S. Main St., had a grand-reopening celebration Aug. 4, complete with free food, free drinks and $50 restaurant gift certificate giveaways every hour. Truong, 50, said he redecorated and tripled the space of his restaurant, which also offers carryout and delivery service. He said the Aug. 4 event was a way to show his appreciation to Lombard residents. “Customers are appreciative of my food,” he said. “When I was young, there was only one Mexican restaurant in the area. People didn’t know what sushi was, and now there’s a Chinese restaurant on almost every corner. So this is a good opportunity for us to show off our food and culture.” Truong said he was very pleased with the Aug. 4 turnout. “We had village trustees and members from the Chamber of Commerce here, so we did a ribbon cutting,” he said. “The restaurant was packed. Some people came for the free food and some ordered food. We had some new customers, as well as a lot of regular customers.” Amanda Cecil, restaurant manager, said they put a smoothie bar in the dining room, which she thinks will be a big hit with the customers.

Lombard sees ‘mild interest’ from groups looking to collaborate on summer fest By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com

The Maple Street Chapel in Lombard is seeking a new sprinkler system. The church sustained minimal damage Aug. 3 from a fire.
Fire causes minimal damage to historic building Maple Street Chapel’s campaign for sprinkler system continues By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – In the midst of its campaign to raise money for a sprinkler system, Lombard’s historic Maple Street Chapel had a brief scare Aug. 3, when part of an exterior wall began to smolder as it was being dried. Facilities Director Ken Bohl was working on some rotted wood on the west side of the building when he used a heat gun to dry it, he said. He noticed wood splinters begin to glow, sprayed them with a hose and called the Lombard
Fire Department. Firefighters responded about 10:50 a.m. to the scene at 220 S. Maple St. to find smoke coming from the exterior wall, Assistant Lombard Fire Chief Jerry Howell said. Crews attacked the small fire from both the inside and outside of the building, removing some interior drywall and insulation and exterior siding to reach the affected area, he said. Bohl estimated the damage to be about $1,000. A carpenter will need to patch the exterior wall. Structural damage initially was estimated to be $30,000 by the Lombard Fire Department. The Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from many neighboring communities, Howell said. Crews took
about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control and investigate whether there was fire anywhere else in the building. The Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society currently is raising money for a fire sprinkler system, which the wooden building does not have. The estimated cost of the system is $150,000, Bohl said. The society has received about $39,000 so far, but group President Thomas Scott has agreed to match all personal donations, Bohl said. The Maple Street Chapel was built in 1870 after its predecessor burned down in its first year. A fire sprinkler fundraising banquet is scheduled for Sept. 26. Additional donation information is available at www.maplestreetchapel.org/ firesprk.htm.
LOMBARD – About six or seven Lombard nonprofit organizations have expressed “mild interest” in helping to run a new summer festival in Lombard. The Lombard Pride Committee sent out surveys to more than 30 area community organizations to gauge their willingness to be involved with a potential community festival after the Lombard Jaycees disbanded, therefore canceling the annual Taste of Lombard. “We still expect a few more responses to trickle in,” Village Manager Scott Niehaus said. “It was a quick turnaround time for the groups to return the survey, so we’ll probably get some more answers in the next couple of weeks.” The deadline for the responses was July 27. Niehaus said the committee, which is made up of eight people of “diverse backgrounds,” will analyze the results and make a recommendation to the Lombard Village Board. The committee will not be making any decisions about the new festival and “will not be writing any checks,” Niehaus said. “The Village Board will make the final decision, and we hope to have that made this fall, so it’s possible there could be a new festival in 2016,” Niehaus said. “But it’s great that the village is tapping local citizens to be a part of this.” He said the new festival doesn’t have to be over the Fourth of July weekend, it doesn’t have to be as many days, and it doesn’t have to be in the same location. “The mayor stressed that it’s OK to break free from the mindset that this is Taste of Lombard Part Two,” Niehaus said. “It’s a daunting task for some local restaurants to have to be at a festival for five days while trying to run their brick-and-mortar location.” Village Clerk and committee alternate Chairwoman Sharon Kuderna hopes that nonprofit groups will want to be involved if they realize
“The Village Board will make the final decision, and we hope to have that made this fall, so it’s possible there could be a new festival in 2016.” Scott Niehaus Village manager the new festival doesn’t have to be as big of an event as the Taste of Lombard was. “We don’t know a lot yet, but the groups that expressed interested were more willing to work with other groups. They didn’t want to take all of it on. But we’re definitely open to new ideas,” she said. Several nonprofits can team up and collaborate on an event, and it would be OK for them to directly contract with an event-planning company, Niehaus said. “Professional companies know how to schedule tents, vendors and everything else. They have people who do that for a living,” he said. “That’s something that makes this a very legitimate proposal.” Niehaus said that throughout the past several years the Taste of Lombard didn’t feature many local restaurants and wasn’t “representative of Lombard.” He hopes a smaller festival would attract more local businesses. “One of the biggest criticisms of the Taste of Lombard was there weren’t that many Lombard restaurants, and that the people selling food were associated with the carnival company, so when the carnival company left, their money left. It wasn’t reinvested in Lombard,” he said. Niehaus thinks most residents want some sort of festival or community celebration. “I don’t think they care if it’s another Taste of Lombard over July Fourth, but they do want an event where they can interact with their friends and neighbors,” he said. The Lombard Pride Committee is scheduled to meet again Aug. 12.

Lombard woman still awaiting psychiatric evaluation Miscevic is found not guilty by reason of insanity in May after 2014 murder of husband By JUAN PABLO GARCIA jugarcia@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The Lombard woman who was deemed insane when she murdered her husband in January 2014 is still awaiting state psychiatric evaluation, according to media reports. Anka Miscevic, 51, was found not guilty by reason of insanity May 29 on a bench trial stipulation, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said. She has been
remanded to the Illinois Department of Human Services, he said. However, Miscevic appeared Aug. 4 in a DuPage County courtroom, according to media reports. During her Anka appearance, Miscevic’s Miscevic attorney said she still is waiting for an open bed at the Elgin Mental Health Center for an inpatient assessment that will determine how long she will need to receive treatment, reports stated. Until a bed opens up, she will continue to receive mental health treatment in the DuPage County Jail. Miscevic was charged with one count of first-degree murder after she

stabbed her husband, Zeljko Miscevic, in the chest while he was asleep Jan. 9, 2014, in their home in the 800 block of Hammerschmidt Street in Lombard. When he tried to call the police, she struck him in the head with a baseball bat. When Lombard police arrived at the residence, they found Anka Miscevic and her husband on the front
lawn of their home. She was immediately taken into custody, and Zeljko Miscevic was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Anka Miscevic admitted she was trying to kill her husband in an interview at the Lombard Police Department, according to court documents. She said she loved Zeljko but believed he was going to kill her and her family, the documents stated. Anka Miscevic was issued a $3 million bond, and during an arraignment Feb. 3, 2014, Miscevic pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing. Her next court date is a status hearing Sept. 9 where her treatment plan is to be presented, Darrah said.
Fire at Lombard McDonald’s sends two employees to hospital SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – A fire Aug. 3 at a McDonald’s in Lombard sent two employees to the hospital with respiratory-related symptoms, according to a village of Lombard news release.
About 8:05 a.m., the Lombard Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at McDonald’s, 540 W. North Ave. Firefighters saw smoke coming out of the building’s roof and upgraded the response to a general alarm, the release stated. The fire appears to have originated
in the kitchen, but the cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation, according to the release. The Lombard Police Department assisted with traffic control and lane closures near North Avenue and Route 53. The village’s Building Department
and the DuPage County Health Department also were called to the scene, the release stated. Two McDonald’s employees were treated at the scene and transported to Adventist Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, according to the release.

THOSE RAISED BROWN BUMPS Older adults may grow alarmed when they see a wart-like skin growth that looks like it may be skin cancer. While this common skin growth may look worrisome, it is benign. In fact, “seborrheic keratosis” can look like warts, moles, actinic keratoses, and skin cancer, but they are differentiated by their characteristic waxy, “pasted-on-the-skin” appearance. Ranging in color from white to black, most are tan or brown and look like a dab of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. They start as small, rough bumps that slowly thicken and develop a warty appearance. If they become irritated (due to rubbing against jewelry or clothing), or patients deem them to be unsightly, the dermatologist can remove seborrheic keratoses.

Summer prep for the upcoming school year
Keep negotiations in governor’s hands Illinois voters elected Bruce Rauner knowing full well his stance on organized labor and with the expectation that he would negotiate with the state’s labor unions. A legislative proposal vetoed by the governor in July and now up for an override vote would take that power out of the governor’s hands and into those of an arbitrator. It would be a mistake. The legislative proposal, S.B. 1229, would provide for a panel of three arbitrators to consider the proposals put forward by the union and the state. They could choose elements of either, but could not modify them to forge a compromise. The legislation is targeted specifically at Rauner, applying only to contracts that expired June 30 of this year. The major union representing state employees in Illinois is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME. In Illinois, almost 40,000 state workers are represented by AFSCME. Its negotiators are seeking an 11.5 percent pay increase for employees over a new fouryear contract. Rauner said AFSCME’s contract proposal would cost the state $1.6 billion in salary and pension expenses and eliminate $500 million in health care savings. The administration said the union also wants five weeks of vacation time, a 37.5-hour workweek and more expensive health benefits. Rauner, citing the disastrous condition of the state’s finances, wants the workers to agree to a four-year pay freeze.

It’s clear that the threat of a strike is on the mind of Rauner; his team has been working on contingency plans in the event of a strike, which the sides have agreed will not happen between now and the end of September. But why would we want to take the power to negotiate out of the hands of our elected chief executive and turn it over to an arbitrator who is accountable to no one? That’s the kind of backroom dealing that got Illinois where it is in the first place. Rauner, a venture capitalist and multi-millionaire making his first foray into public service, was upfront about his desire to reduce union influence and hold the line on labor costs in Illinois in light of the state’s dire financial situation. Illinois voters elected Rauner overwhelmingly, some of them no doubt in hopes that he would do just that. We want negotiations between the state and its unions to be both transparent and fair. Those making the decisions should be accountable to the taxpayers whose money they are spending. Overriding Rauner’s veto of S.B. 1229 would do the opposite. Our state legislators should let it stand. It is time everyone in Springfield, from lawmakers to state employees, face reality: Illinois is broke, and its people are not willing to pay more until they see serious commitment to changing the broken system that got us here.

It might be summer break, but at District 88 we’re busy making sure everything is ready for students when they return to school Aug. 19. Staff members have devoted numerous hours to summer curriculum work, and they came together in early August for several workshops to prepare for the 2015-16 school year. New staff members also will attend a new teacher orientation Aug. 13 and 14. While that curriculum work COMMUNITY is critical, we also are making sure the buildings are set. The VOICE buildings and grounds staff Scott has maintained more than 1 Helton million square feet of facilities and more than 130 acres of land to ensure the best learning environment for our students. As we plan for the 2015-16 school year, information about registration can be found at www.dupage88.net/site/page/3979. Our focus and initiatives this year will include continuing the great work that takes place in District 88 through: • Continuing to close the achievement gap to ensure all students are successful • Expanding measurement and assessment practices to monitor and promote student growth (This past year, Illinois schools implemented the new PARCC assessments. We appreciate your support as we transition to this new exam, and we will keep you updated as more information becomes available.) • Continuing to look at best practices with regard to technology to ensure the district remains on the cutting edge and provides students with 21st-century skills – we must always provide our students with an education that is focused on what they will need in the future, not just today • Maintaining a comprehensive curriculum and school environment to build futures for all students, while remaining fiscally responsible • Partnering with parents/guardians and community members to maintain support systems that reinforce high student performance • Continuing our open, honest and transparent communication with all stakeholders District 88 offers students a meaningful and comprehensive educational program that provides a strong foundation for success beyond high school, and the 2015-16 school year will provide yet another opportunity to expand on our accomplishments. I would like to thank you for your support of our programs and staff members and for your partnership in “Building Futures” for the students of District 88.

Press Continues Scoring as Chicago Draws 2-2 with FCKC Late Hagen equalizer prevents Red Stars win over defending NWSL champs Lisle, Ill. – Saturday evening saw the Red Stars come away with a tie for the second game in a row after facing a fellow NWSL title contender. Christen Press impressed packed stadium by scoring a brace, with both assists coming from fellow World Cup winner Lori Chalupny. However, it wasn’t enough for the Red Stars, who saw their goals rendered null by FCKC’s Amy LePeilbet and Sarah Hagen, whose late equalizer earned a point for the defending champions. Playing in front of their second consecutive sellout crowd at home, the Red Stars took the lead in the 12th minute of the match with a well-timed assist from Lori Chalupny who sent the ball over the defense for Press to run on to. The forward took one touch and got around the keeper to tap the ball into an open net. The visitors from Kansas tied the score in the 35th minute, as veterean Amy LePeilbet headed in Lauren Holiday’s corner kick. FCKC could have turned the match around three minutes from the break, Red Stars defender Abby Erceg’s professional foul keeping Amy Rodriguez from sprinting on to a through ball from midfield. Fortunately for the Chicago center back, referee Matthew Franz cautioned her with a yellow card on the play and Yael Averbuch curled the ensuing free-kick from the edge of the box just over the frame. The fans at Benedictine University in Lisle had to wait until the 64th minute for the next big spike in the action, and Michele Dalton delivered in a big way, coming up with back-toback spectacular saves. First the Chicago goalkeeper palmed Heather O’Reilly’s long-range shot over the frame in an impressive fashion. Then she back pedaled on the subsequent corner kick from the right and leapt up, tipping

the attempt over the crossbar just in time to keep Lauren Holiday from scoring directly. Press gave the Red Stars the lead in the 74th minute. The second goal yet again came from a Chalupny assist- the forward received the ball with her back to goal and looked to have no options, but a quick turn and some precise footwork allowed her to lose her mark and send the ball curling into the upper 90 for the go ahead goal. It was her eighth strike in just six games this season. The spectacular strike visibly lifted Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad, which came agonizingly close to doubling its advantage four minutes later. After rookie Danielle Colaprico blasted a shot off the bar from just outside the area, Alyssa Mautz pounced on the rebound to drive a first-time attempt on frame that forced Rowland to dive to her right and deflect the ball wide by way of an excellent fingertip save. Just as it seemed like the Red Stars might be able to hold on for a massive win over the defending NWSL champions, substitute Sarah Hagen had other plans, beating a defender to the ball in the box to head home O’Reilly’s signature cross from the right flank. The home side could have reclaimed its advantage deep inside stoppage time, but the referee’s whistle remained silent on what looked like a potential handball by FCKC defender Sauerbrunn to block substitute Vanessa DiBernardo’s cross in from the right. The Chicago Red Stars travel to take on mighty Portland Thorns FC on August 9. The club’s next home match is an August 12 clash with Sky Blue FC. After reading about the proposed construction at Glenbard West that will disrupt the land around Honeysuckle Hill, a presettlement wooded area, our family decided to ride our bikes to the site to see the hill firsthand. What we found was much more than a beautiful wooded hill. ... Couldn’t this land be better used as a learning tool for students? At the very least, an archaeological survey of the hill and surrounding area should be done before construction. We need to document this important piece of Glen Ellyn’s past.

COD proposes $7.5M in budget cuts for 2016 By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage may be cutting more than $7.5 million – including tax levies and student tuition – off what college staff has called a “bloated” 2016 budget. Board Secretary and Budget Committee Chairman Frank Napolitano said at the July 30 Board of Trustees meeting that the board typically doesn’t get involved during the creation process of the budget. But when looking at this year’s budget, he said he found many items were unnecessarily inflated and worked with staff to make adjustments to the proposal. That excess and accumulation of cash would be eliminated under new board leadership, board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said. “The budget didn’t come to us as our budget, it came to us as Dr. [Robert] Breuder’s budget,” she said. College financial consultant Kurt Beckeman of Alix Partners said the college’s revenues had been budgeted very conservatively in recent years and the college could comfortably find savings with “no real cuts to the re-
“We can have a budget that successfully ... allows the board to understand what its true limitations are and what its true abilities are to decrease taxes for the people here in District 502.” Kathy Hamilton College of DuPage Board chairwoman sources of the school.” The school hired the firm in June to step in for Treasurer Thomas Glaser and Controller Lynn Sapyta, who were placed on leave pending an ongoing investigation regarding violation of board investment policy. Beckeman said the school collected about $36.5 million more than it projected in its 2014 fiscal year operating funds and is on track to receive $23.6 million more than expected in the 2015 fiscal year. In the proposed 2016 budget, the college would operate on a lean $761,000 surplus with a projected flat enrollment, though earlier in the meeting interim President Joseph Collins said enrollment was on the rise. Most notable in the cuts is a $2.9 million decrease in the property tax
levy, which represents a 5 percent reduction. Hamilton said the college has increased its levy about 59 percent across the past five years and had a massive surplus through the time period. She said the increase was “unwarranted” given the Great Recession and saw an opportunity to roll some of it back. The board also is considering a $5 tuition decrease starting in the spring semester, cutting back to $135 per credit hour and cutting about $1.4 million in revenue. Hamilton said the board decided it no longer wanted the College of DuPage to be the most expensive community college in the state. The proposal outlines about $6.6 million in cuts to salaries and benefits – largely because of previous budgets
not taking vacancies into account and over-budgeting for medical benefit premium increases, Beckeman said. It also cut $3.55 million in “other” expenditures, including reclassifying capital funds, decreasing contractual IT services and other items. The budget wasn’t all cuts, however. It included $2.9 million in legal fees to deal with a number of internal and external investigations surrounding the college, including a state audit and federal subpoenas. It also included $4 million for a contingency fund should the board need to cover any additional spending in the next year, which Board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi said could include a drop in state payments with the current budget standoff in Springfield. Napolitano said he hoped the board and its budget committee could be more involved in the process to ensure it reflected what was best for the public and school. “We can have a budget that successfully ... allows the board to understand what its true limitations are and what its true abilities are to decrease taxes for the people here in District 502,” Hamilton said.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is looking into what a recent legal opinion from the attorney general’s office might mean for the contract of embattled President Robert Breuder. A nonbinding opinion written by Assistant Attorney General Matt Hartman dated July 24 stated the board did not adequately inform the public before extending Breuder’s contract during its meeting July 12, 2011. The meeting’s agenda listed only “personnel actions,” according to the opinion and college archives. It did not address Breuder’s contract or any other details about actions being taken. “Because the board did not state that it was extending the contract of the President or discuss any specifics of the contract extension before taking final action, the board did not adequately inform the public of the business being conducted,” Hartman stated in the opinion. Board President Kathy Hamilton said at the board’s July 30 meeting the letter created “considerable legal ques-
tions,” which she directed college attorneys to look into. During the meeting, college attorney Tim Elliott said in light of ongoing investigations into certain parts of Breuder’s contract and out of respect for Breuder’s privacy, the board should discuss the matter in closed session. The board ultimately met for nearly two hours discussing the contract, among other topics. After the meeting, Hamilton said she could not comment on the options in front of the board – including using it to terminate Breuder before his scheduled retirement date of March 31, 2016, and before he receives a nearly $763,000 buyout – but pointed to several years of allegations by watchdogs that say the contract was invalid. She said in a statement earlier in the week that the opinion came as a surprise but “validates our worst concerns about COD in the Breuder era.” Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, confirmed July 27 the office had authority to prosecute such violations and that the office was considering its legal options.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees undertook a massive, 35-item agenda during its meeting July 30, hitting on its future budget, an illegal leak and an update on an attorney general opinion. Here are more topics from the meeting: A pair of trustees took their frustration about an alleged lack of communication and transparency through a venue usually reserved for journalists and members of the public. Trustees Erin Birt and Dianne McGuire filed two Freedom of Information Act requests apiece July 23 and 27, detailing a total of 24 requests including communications to attorneys, information on internal investigations, financial reports and invoices. Birt and McGuire both previously had brought concerns about a lack of financial reports and general lack of communication between the “Clean Slate” majority and themselves and trustee Joseph Wozniak. Birt said she and McGuire had brought it up publicly and privately, calling the FOIAs a last resort. “I’m encouraged and hopeful that the communication will improve as we

Fix a leak: Whether they’re from an outdoor spigot, an indoor toilet or a faucet, leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted in homes every year, according to the EPA. Keep your home leak-free by investing in easy-to-install, efficient fixtures throughout the home. Update your bathroom faucet: While you should turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, you can also find a faucet that uses less water while it runs. According to the EPA, the average family can save 700 gallons of water per year by retrofitting their bathroom faucets with water-efficient models. These new models flow at 1.5 gallons per minute (GPM) versus the standard 2.2 GPM. The EPA reports if every home in the United States replaced existing faucets and aerators with more efficient models, the country would save 64 billion gallons of water annually.

(BPT) - Low rainfall and lack of snow melt, along with record high temperatures have contributed to the worst drought California has seen in decades. In fact, some studies suggest it’s the worst the state has seen in 1,000 years, but California isn’t the only state suffering extremely dry conditions. The country as a whole is in the midst of one of the most sustained periods of increasing drought on record, according to the Palmer Index. “With communities around the world facing water supply challenges, it is more important than ever to use water efficiently,” says Paul Patton, Delta Faucet Company senior research and development and regulatory manager. “Working alongside the EPA’s WaterSense program, companies such as Delta Faucet continue to innovate and make water-efficient products available for homeowners to easily reduce water usage without sacrificing experience or performance.” You can save thousands of gallons of water per year, and reduce your utility bills, with a few simple home upgrades: Replace your showerhead: Showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of residential indoor water use - for the average family, that’s nearly 40 gallons per day, the EPA says. If you can’t decrease your shower time, retrofit your showerheads with WaterSense-labeled models to save up to 40 percent of the water you’d typically use when showering. Thanks to new technologies like Delta H2Okinetic technology, which provides the feeling of a warmer, more drenching shower without using more water, you won’t have to sacrifice your experience for efficiency.

Make the most of outdoor space When the calendar says it’s summer, all you can think about is getting outside and soaking up the sun. So now is the time to upgrade and get the most out of your outdoor space. These backyard additions can bring both functionality and beauty to your home’s exterior. Pumped-up curb appeal. Step out to the street and take a look at your home from a passerby’s view. What stands out? Consider adding a fresh coat of paint to your siding or a bright shade to your front door. Plant a few colorful flowers in window boxes or pots for some eye-catching detail. Updated gates. Fences and gates are great for keeping kids and pets out of places they shouldn’t be like pools, gardens and other potentially dangerous areas. When updating your outdoor space this summer, a safer gate latch is a necessity. Keep your gated areas safe with an alarm that sounds if someone is getting into an area they shouldn’t. You can install a latch gate in minutes without the need for special tools, screws or wiring. Outdoor kitchen. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy meals outside with your family and friends. Why not take the cooking outside too? An outdoor kitchen can be as simple or as complex as you’d like. Start with a grill and work your way into outdoor refrigerators, sinks and serving areas.

HOME-SELLING TIP Outdoor lights make yard safer One way to add curb appeal is to illuminate your home with outdoor lighting. Strategically place lights throughout your yard to add a welcoming theme to the look of your home. Outdoor lighting also provides a number of safety features. Not only does it deter burglars and vandals, but it makes your pathways and sidewalks easier to see so you can have added peace of mind.

Simple home improvements you can do to enhance your summer vacation
By Laura Firszt Networx
S
ummer is a time to relax and take life a little more slowly … especially when the mercury climbs over 90 degrees. At the same time, the sunny season offers an opportunity to tackle household projects that were impossible when the ground was shrouded in snow. Here’s a novel idea for you: Why not combine home improvement with relaxation? Take on a simple DIY project or two that will actually enhance your summer vacation once it’s done.
Build a simple patio You know you want to. It just seems like a lot of work. But putting together a dedicated patio area will help you enjoy your outdoor space so much more. It will also boost your home’s curb appeal if you’re thinking of selling. Besides, a patio made of concrete pavers is fairly simple. Pavers are easy to lay correctly, and if you do happen to make a mistake, just pick up the errant piece and reposition it. The important thing is to place the concrete pavers atop a welldesigned base. Lazy DIY tip: Plan your patio layout to use only whole pavers, so you’ll eliminate the need for cutting.
Add a water feature Installing a water feature will add a great deal of charm to your yard. The quickest DIY method makes use of a ready-assembled kit, and there are mini ones to fit the smallest spaces. If you prefer, you can get a bit more adventurous (and green as well!) by making your own from an electric pump and a repurposed container. Speaking of green, make sure that your fountain recycles its water, for conservation’s sake. And beware of features with standing water. They may form a breeding ground for mosquitoes, one sign of summer that is less than welcome in your yard.
Shield yourself from the sun Yes, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. That’s why you need some form of protection from the sun’s hottest rays when you’re spending substantial amounts of time outside. At under $100, a porch umbrella is the cheapest and easiest way to go — you can stand it up, hang it, or slot it into your patio table. (If you choose the latter, make sure to secure against tipping over.) To shield a larger area, as well as offer protection against wind, bugs, or nosy neighbors, set up fabric screens or softly draped nets. Protect your health tip: Look for umbrellas and screens that provide SPF protection. A rating of 25+ will block 96 percent of dangerous ultraviolet sun rays.
Upgrade your outdoor furniture You may find that your porch or deck looks like an inviting retreat, but your outdoor furniture … not so much. Somehow stretching out on worn, lumpy, or even mildewy surfaces just doesn’t feel as relaxing as it could. One simple upgrade for lawn chairs and loungers is to replace the pads or cushions. Purchase ready-mades or get crafty and sew your own. Either way, you’ll want to get fabric that is fade-resistant and washable. For a more drastic redo, try refreshing your furniture with paint. Brush on for wood or metal; spray paint wicker, rattan, plastic and upholstery (yes! you can transform the look of your upholstery using paint). Successful painting tips: Match the type of paint to the furniture’s material and look for UV protection. Make sure that all surfaces are smooth, clean, and dry before you begin to paint.

FEMA updates flood maps for DuPage County By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Many DuPage County residents are either hoping or fearing that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will confirm what they already know – that they are in a floodplain. The agency, alongside the Illinois State Water Survey and DuPage County Stormwater Management, recently released a long-awaited update to the county’s flood map, detailing properties that would be affected by 100year and 500-year flooding events. “We’re getting everybody on the same page. We’re updating the data when it’s possible,” said Shelly Fuller with the Illinois State Water Survey at a July 29 open house. “Flood risk changes over time and when you learn more or it changes, you update your map when you can because you want people to be aware of the risk.” The updated maps were on display during the open house at the DuPage County Administration Building, kicking off the mandatory 30day public comment period through Aug. 28. Christine Klepp, a project engineer at the county, said the whole process likely won’t be finalized for another year or more after more than seven years of work, updating as new FEMA surveys came in. The changes largely take place in the central and eastern parts of the county, Klepp said. More properties were added to the floodplain, as opposed to those taken off a floodplain. Klepp couldn’t give an exact number that were added or taken off. Such an update could be a mixed bag for those that live and work in the floodplains. Though it could be helpful
information for municipalities planning and applying for funding for projects, newly added homeowners would have to disclose they were in a floodplain when selling their homes and those with federally insured mortgages would have to purchase flood insurance. Klepp said given the more frequent and severe types of storms the county has been seeing, she believed the accuracy would ultimately be beneficial. “Overall, some people might not be happy being put into the floodplain, but I think in our department we’re not intending to put anybody in the floodplain, we’re intending to put out a good map that shows risk,” she said. Mark Barbera, a Roselle resident, said he received a letter in the mail saying his property may have been placed on a floodplain in the latest update. It wasn’t, but he said he appreciated the outreach. “It was very informative, especially if you sat down with someone there,” he said. “This is something you want to know and not have it sprung on you.” Until then, Fuller said, it was important to reach out to people in the community to make sure everyone knew the latest information. Those wishing to challenge the mapping can participate in a technical appeal period after public comment, she said. To find out the latest on DuPage County, visit fema. gov/view-your-communitys-preliminary-flood-hazard-data-0. Fuller receives written comments via email at mlfuller@illinois.edu and to Shelly Fuller, Illinois State Water Survey, 2204 Griffith Drive, Champaign, IL 618207463.

COLLEGE NOTES
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Summer break is approaching its final stages, which means fall sports for both high school and college athletes are right around the corner. A number of graduates from Glenbard East, Willowbrook and Montini are getting ready to show off their skills at the college level. Here’s a look at what to expect from some local products in college sports this fall.
Johnson expected to slot into Hawkeyes’ starting lineup
LBS/VPA
After being used sparingly his first three years on campus, former Montini defensive lineman Jaleel Johnson is expected to move into the starting lineup for Iowa this season. Johnson redshirted in 2012, played in seven games in 2013 and played in all 13 games last fall. He had 2 1/2 tackles for loss and a sack in 2014. Heading into his junior year of eligibility, Johnson is listed as a starter at defensive tackle on the Hawkeyes’ depth charts.
Midfielder Ruffer hoping to build on strong freshman year
Seeing the field as a freshman is always difficult for Division I athletes, but former Glenbard East standout Alex Ruffer was able to work her way into the lineup for Western Michigan soccer. The midfielder played in 16 games last fall, which tied for second most among true freshmen on the roster. The Broncos had six seniors on last year’s team, including four midfielders, so Ruffer could see an increased role this season. Photo provided by Jeff Becker/Iowa Athletics Borsellino part of returning core Iowa’s Jaleel Johnson lines up for a play during a game last season. The Montini graduate is atop the depth chart on the defensive line for Western Illinois football team and could have a big impact for the Hawkeyes this season.
After a stellar career at Montini, Joey Borsellino has continued his football success at Western Illinois. He was one of just two true freshmen to play for the Leathernecks in 2013 and started all 12 games as a sophomore last fall. He has more than 1,000 career receiving yards and four career touchdowns, including one at Northwestern last year. This season, the junior wide receiver is one of 14 returning starters back for a WIU team hoping to improve on a 5-7 record.

Jack Allen
Area football players shining at college level season kickoff. Several players from area high schools will be hitting the field and making an impact for programs across the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision landscape. Here are a few players to keep an eye on this season. Rob Bain
COLLEGE: Michigan State YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central IMPACT: Allen enters his fourth year as a starter on the Spartans’ offensive line after redshirting in 2011. As a junior, the 6-foot-2, 295-pounder was selected as a first-team All-American by USA Today and also was named one of six finalists for the Rimington Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding center. Allen didn’t allow a sack all season and figures to be a mainstay on the line this season.
COLLEGE: Illinois YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook IMPACT: Part of Bolingbrook’s state championship team in 2011, Bain has played a bigger role for the Illini each season after taking a redshirt season in 2012. The 2014 season was Bain’s most productive yet. The defensive lineman played in all 13 games, starting seven, and finished the season with 29 total tackles, including four for loss and one sack. In his first career start against Purdue, he recorded six tackles. He will be looking to build off that production this fall.

COLLEGE: Stanford YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West IMPACT: The 6-foot-4, 297-pound guard heads into his senior campaign this fall as a vital cog on the offensive line. Caspers played in 13 games in 2014, starting 12 of them, and was a Pac-12 All-Academic second-team selection. He also saw action in 14 games as a sophomore and again was a Pac-12 All-Academic second-team pick. Based on his successful 2014, Caspers figures to be a big key to Stanford’s success this fall.
COLLEGE: UConn YEAR: Sophomore HIGH SCHOOL: Downers Grove North IMPACT: Diggs got his feet wet at the collegiate level in 2014, playing in all 12 games for the Huskies as a true freshman. Seeing time as both a linebacker and on special teams, the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder finished with 10 tackles on the season, including a season-high four tackles against SMU on Dec. 6. Diggs could have a major impact on the Huskies’ defense this season.

COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township IMPACT: Harris started all 12 games last fall at cornerback and finished in a tie for 13th in the Big Ten with nine pass breakups. He was third on the Wildcats in tackles with 70 (58 solos and 12 assists) and notched interceptions against Illinois and Michigan while forcing a pair of fumbles. The junior was an Academic All-Big Ten selection and could be an even bigger force for the Wildcats this fall.
COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Sophomore HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard North IMPACT: The running back burst onto the collegiate scene as a true freshman and earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten accolades in 2014. Jackson became the 16th player in program history to record a 1,000-yard rushing season, finishing with 1,187 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 201 yards and an additional score and is looking to be just as productive this fall.
Ethan Pocic
Dan Vitale
COLLEGE: LSU YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lemont IMPACT: The junior is ticketed to start at center for the Tigers this fall and has been named to the Rimington Award Watch List, which is an award given to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Pocic started all 12 games as a sophomore in 2014, playing both center and right guard. The 6-foot-7, 300-pounder also played in six contests as a freshman.
COLLEGE: Northwestern YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South IMPACT: He enters the final season of what has turned out to be an outstanding college career. After entering the lineup as a true freshman in 2012, Vitale started all 12 games at superback in each of the past two years. As a junior, Vitale was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten pick after being second on Northwestern with 40 catches for 402 yards and two touchdowns and could be a key offensive player this season.

Jordan Walsh
SCHOOL: Iowa YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West IMPACT: A veteran on the offensive line for the Hawkeyes, the Glenbard West graduate is set to begin his senior season. Walsh played in 12 games a year ago with 10 starts at right guard. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder started all 13 contests as a sophomore and also played in seven games as a freshman after redshirting in 2011.

Jordan Westerkamp
COLLEGE: Nebraska YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Montini IMPACT: After catching 20 passes for 283 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2013, Westerkamp saw his numbers more than double last fall. The wide receiver played in all 13 games for the Huskers and was second on the team with 44 receptions for 747 yards and five touchdowns. The junior also is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten pick.

COLLEGE: Illinois YEAR: Senior HIGH SCHOOL: Lemont IMPACT: After starting his collegiate football career at St. Xavier University, an NAIA school in Chicago, Fejedelem walked on at Illinois in the spring of 2013 and took a redshirt season that fall, then broke out with a productive 2014 season. He played in all 13 games and finished the season with 51 total tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery against Ohio State. He could be a major piece in the defensive secondary this season.

COLLEGE: Memphis YEAR: Junior HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township IMPACT: Ranked eighth all-time at Memphis with 192 career points, he also holds the program record for longest field goal after kicking a 56-yarder against South Florida as a freshman.
