LISLE – Old man winter seemed to be throwing everything he could at the Midwest this week, and after what seemed like endless snow, an arctic blast moved in Sunday threatening record lows in the Chicago area through Tuesday. As of noon Tuesday, the lowest temperature recorded in Lisle since Sunday was minus 17, recorded at 7:45 a.m. Monday. That mark doesn’t quite reach the record low of minus 27 for the area set on Jan. 20, 1985, according to the National Weather Service. The lowest recorded wind chill came at 9:51 a.m. Monday at minus 42. The cold also forced schools across the western suburbs to cancel classes Monday and Tuesday, including District 202 in Lisle.

Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, will deploy for his third tour of duty in the Middle East since rejoining as a Navy reservist more than 12 years ago. He joined the Navy in 1988 as a medical student in Chicago, taking advantage of the Navy Health Professionals Scholarship Program to pay for school.

itary infrastructure built there than it did nine years ago, and he expects to have more access to email and phone. Cole knows what’s ahead, having gone through two deployments already, and said leaving behind family is the hardest part. “I know how unpleasant it can be,” he said. “But I’m ready.” His family also is likely as ready as a family can be. They moved 10 times when he was on active duty, and he was sent abroad many times before the three Middle East tours. “The military wife is really a special person,” he said. “I have been gone so many times … I’d leave for a month or months at a time, sometimes with only a few hours notice, and she’d just [take care of everything].” At 48, Cole is old for the military, and this could be his last deployment. “Young people who look at me say ‘He’s old enough to be my dad,’” he said. “But I got a little left, so I’m still in and we’ll see what happens.”

DOWNERS GROVE – When Dr. James Cole discharged from the Navy in 2000 after nine years of service, the need for surgeons like him in the U.S. military looked much different than it would just months later. “I left active duty at that time thinking it was a peaceful world,” he said. “And less than a year later 9/11 happened, and that changed everything, and I got back on as a drilling reservist.” At the time a nine-year veteran, Cole said he thought of the friends still in active duty who would be sent overseas and how they might need his service. “A lot of them had children and were young and enlisted,” he said. “And I’m a trauma surgeon. There aren’t many of us in the military. And like no other time except maybe Vietnam, they’re going to need us.” This month, Cole, the assistant director for trauma at

lives in DeKalb County. As a surgeon in Downers Grove, Cole said the gruesome injuries from car accidents often resemble the wounds inflicted by fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Though the injuries may be visually similar, the operating environment couldn’t be more different. In his first tour to Afghanistan, Cole joined special operations troops as they pushed outward toward Pakistan’s border. The surgeries would often take place in a tent, with instruments and lighting powered by generators set up by Cole. He made that first Afghanistan deployment in 2004, followed by a tour in Iraq in 2007. “Afghanistan in 2004 was still the absolute wild, wild west,” he said. “It was as dangerous as can be. … It was very hostile.” Unlike that deployment, this year, he will operate in a more managerial capacity overseeing several trauma efforts in the war-torn country. DOWNERS GROVE – Jessica Larsen and Joseph Dempsey were driving for takeout at Nardi’s Tower of Pizza in Addison when her water broke on New Year’s Eve. Larsen quickly called her doctor, who said there was no reason to rush. “He was like, ‘Oh yeah go ahead and eat your food,’” she said. After some pizza and a quick shower, Larsen and Dempsey headed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where, several hours later, she gave birth to the hospital’s first baby of 2014. DOWNERS GROVE – The owner of My Favorite Toy Store said outstanding business loans led to closing the downtown Downers Grove and Elmhurst stores. Owner Michael Geisen of Downers Grove said the bank declined to offer a payment plan and instead took a lump-sum payment on long-term business loans, emptying his business checking account. Geisen said he took loans over time to buy inventory for both stores, as well as remodeling efforts and initial build-outs. But there were no funds left to pay staff or keep the doors open, which he closed for good at both stores at 3 p.m. Dec. 31. Geisen opened the Downers Grove location first in 2001, after a survey of residents named a toy store as the third most-wanted downtown business, he said.

Relief, finally After Tuesday, Castro said temperatures will look moderate in comparison to the arctic blast. “Temperatures could be back into the teens and 20s on Wednesday, which will feel like a heat wave, and then by Thursday they could be in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees,” he said. mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – York High School junior Shaun Marshall lost his grandfather and caretaker, Jerry Rochford, just days before Christmas. But his neighbors Stacy and John Krueger wanted to assure him he still had plenty of people behind him. “When Jerry died last week, I didn’t know what was going to happen to Shaun,” said Stacy Krueger. Within a week she’d raised more than $10,000 toward a trust fund that 16-year-old Shaun will receive when he turns 18. What started as the effort of a concerned neighbor quickly spread into a community-wide effort to provide for a teen who has overcome more tragedy than most his age. “Despite all the tragedy, he’s going to have an opportunity for a bright future,” Krueger said. Shaun’s mother, Samantha, lost her battle with cancer when he was very young. For more than a decade, Shaun lived with his grandparents. Six years ago, his grandmother, Joanne Rochford, died after a fight with cancer. That made his grandfather, Jerry Rochford, Shaun’s sole caretaker. “I felt like they were just kind of adrift without Joanne,” Stacy Krueger said. Jerry Rochford, 59, died suddenly Dec. 20 after police found him unconscious in his car in the 100 block of North Michigan Avenue in Elmhurst. The DuPage County Coroner’s office is still investigating Rochford’s death. “We were actually the first family to be called,” said Jennifer Minkalis of Woodridge, whose family has taken in Shaun. Minkalis and her husband, Andrew, Joanne Rochford’s nephew, have three sons of their own – ages 5, 8 and 10. Even with their own boys to take care of, the Minkalises didn’t hesitate to welcome Shaun into their home. “As a family, we knew it was the right thing to do,”

Minkalis said. John Krueger remembers sitting in the backyard with Jerry Rochford frequently, and Stacy remembers him most as a great neighbor. No strangers to flooding during large storms, Stacy Krueger said Rochford was always the first neighbor to offer assistance. John Krueger said all Rochford ever wanted to do was take care of Shaun. John and Stacy Krueger wanted to continue their good-neighbor relationship after Rochford died and help take care of his grandson. “Really all we wanted was for Shaun to have some type of solid footing when he turns 18,” John Krueger said. Stacy Krueger said Shaun has a great group of friends as well, but wanted to give him a financial backing for college, trade school or car depending on what plans he makes when he graduates high school. Minkalis said they’ve only had the opportunity to talk briefly about Shaun’s future, but he’s thought about a future in carpentry and attending College of DuPage. “He really wants to make something of himself,” Minkalis said. In the meantime, Minkalis is excited to bring Shaun into her home. “This is the core value of family,” she said. Minkalis has been blown away by the support Shaun has received from his Elmhurst community and even strangers as the fundraiser has spread through social media. Stacy Krueger takes no credit for launching the campaign. To her, it just proves the nature of the Elmhurst community. “I didn’t do anything that any other person living next door wouldn’t have done,” she said.

The March primary season has arrived. Republican voters in DuPage County will soon decide a challenger to Gov. Pat Quinn from a crowded field of new and familiar faces. Elections generally favor incumbents, but many view Quinn as vulnerable since he narrowly won his first full term as governor in 2010. With a legislature dominated by Democrats, Republicans are also eager to send their first candidate back to the Governor’s Mansion since former Gov. George Ryan left embroiled in scandal in 2003 that eventually sent him to prison. Here’s a look at the four Republican candidates on the March 18 primary ballot vying to challenge Quinn in November.

State Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington The downstate Republican came close to defeating Quinn in 2010, losing by roughly 32,000 votes. Brady won 98 of the state’s 102 counties but lost the most populous one – Cook County, a traditional stronghold for Democrats. The state’s poor economic health and Quinn’s income tax hike support all favorably carried Brady into the final moments of the 2010 campaign. But Quinn’s campaign turned voters’ attention to Brady’s social conservatism, a political philosophy that doesn’t play well with some right-centered suburban voters. Brady in this campaign has shied away from his socially conservative positions on issues such as abortion and gun control, and has focused on the state’s economy and financial health. He also helped the recent pension reform deal pass the Illinois Senate.

On his campaign website, Brady states he would strictly cut government spending to try and balance Illinois’ budget. He would let the 2011 temporary income tax increase expire in 2015, an issue expected to dominate the gubernatorial race. Brady first launched a bid for governor in 2006, finishing third in the Republican primary. The 52-year-old Bloomington native also helps run the family’s real estate business that has financially struggled since the economic recession.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale The chief of staff to former Gov. Jim Edgar narrowly lost a chance to compete against Quinn. Brady defeated the DuPage County senator by a mere 193 votes in the GOP primary four years ago. Dillard will try to right his campaign in 2014, but he already has a messaging snafu. Dillard voted against the brokered pension reform in December, while his running mate Sen. Jill Tracy, R-Quincy, voted for it. Primary opponents have yet to seize on the inconsistency between the Dillard ticket, but the pension deal for candidates on both sides will likely be a reoccurring issue throughout the election. Dillard, 58, brings decades of political experience as a statewide candidate, having served policy roles for both Edgar and former Gov. Jim Thompson. A Republican statehouse leader, Dillard has served 20 years in the Senate. Dillard’s campaign focuses on economic and budget issues, according to his website. His “Destination Illinois” plan would make Illinois business friendly and shrink the scope of state government – all positions that resonate with typical Republican voters.

Gervase, 38, is a former high school Spanish teacher at Downers Grove North who went on to do sales in the corporate world, before turning her attention to a fundraising business startup and teaching yoga. She said at a typical yoga

studio, a drop-in class might cost between $15 and $20 and a regular, weekly class might run about $10 each. She hopes her class will attract both those who couldn’t afford yoga before, along with seasoned yogis who might bring friends. But most of all, she hopes the plan can be a good way to spread the physical and mental benefits of the practice. “One hundred people practicing yoga giving me $2 each is better than 10 people giving me $20 each,” she said. “All in all I get the same, but I personally will get more out of it if I see more people practicing yoga.” She said she plans to go to

women’s shelters as well to let them know they are welcome to attend her classes. “Once people feel the transformation of the body and mind and spirit, maybe they will feel they can let something go, like junk food so they can pay to keep the place going,” she said. Gervase was inspired to try the business model after talking with a well-known yoga instructor Deborah Williamson, who started a similar studio near Sheboygan, Wis. “It’s not as popular as I think it should be,” Gervase said. “And I’m just very excited about it.”

Dominick’s closes, no new owner in sight SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Dominick’s in Downers Grove closed Dec. 28 along with dozens of other locations that parent company Safeway were not able to sell to competitors. Safeway announced this fall that it would be closing any of its 72 stores that were not purchased by competitors, leading to clearance sales earlier in December and empty shelves. Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Michael Cassa said discussions with potential tenants are continuing, but there was nothing new to report as of last week. Mariano’s Fresh Market and Jewel have announced the purchase of several Dominick’s in the Chicago area, and Whole Foods is rumored to be pursuing a short list of stores. In Downers Grove, the 72,000-square-foot grocery store at 42 Ogden Ave. serves as an anchor business for about a half-dozen businesses in the strip mall, including Sally Beauty Supply, Hallmark and Oberweis Dairy.

BUS DRIVERS WANTED The Village of Downers Grove is accepting applications for parttime bus drivers.

The Downers Grove Police Department would like to make our citizens aware of a revision to the Illinois Vehicle Code pertaining to using cell phones while driving. Beginning January 1, 2014, anyone utilizing a cell phone while driving must use a hands-free device. This is in addition to the prohibition against using any electronic device to compose, send, or read an electronic message (texting).

Minimum Requirements: Requirements include a CDL Class “B” License with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements and a good driving record. Candidates must be at least 21 years old. Starting Wage - $14.44/hour to $17.33/hour with potential to $19.89/hour. Applications are available at the reception desk in the Village Hall. Position is opened until filled. E.O.E.

Keep the open space What’s with the Glen Ellyn Park District’s plans for Ackerman Park? The Park District board has a potential $7 million outlay for the proposed improvement for the beautiful open space at Ackerman. I sure hope the park board realizes that sometimes less is more and doesn’t get carried away with making a monument to themselves – like the ground clock on Main Street in Glen Ellyn that took up several valuable parking spaces and is in constant need of repairs. Glen Ellyn Park Board members: Have mercy on the taxpayers who are still overburdened by the economy’s downturn by being fiscally responsible. What’s up with tunnel project? The Lisle Main Street pedestrian tunnel underneath the Metra tracks has been in disrepair for many years. On Nov. 1, it was closed for repair. Not only is this a major inconvenience, it is a major safety issue. Who makes these decisions? Certainly not a commuter. Perhaps it was the same people who permanently from a different college savings program received mailers with their Social Security numbers printed on the front. Rutherford has tried to make a name as a taxpayer steward, cutting equipment and supplies while in office. Rutherford has focused his 2014 campaign on the state’s fiscal woes while highlighting his statewide executive experience. The son of pizza shop owners, Rutherford often mentions how he worked as a child and into college, graduating without any student loan debt. He worked at ServiceMaster Company for 25 years, before retiring in 2010.

This is a response to a letter that appeared in the Dec. 25 Suburban Life: I want to thank the writer who wrote regarding the State of Illinois pension system. The information that

Early Thursday morning, I noticed my mailbox post had been broken off at the base by a snow plow. I called the Lombard Public Works Department and left a message not knowing what, if anything, they would do. Even with all of the work going on I heard back from them within two hours. A very pleasant woman let me know that not only would the city replace my mailbox (probably in the spring) but that a temporary box would be put up within a day or two. Much to my surprise, before the mailman arrived, a replacement box had been installed and I never missed a letter. Way to go Lombard Public Works Department.

The wealthy businessman from Winnetka spent big money ($1.5 million) on early TV ads this holiday season to introduce himself to Illinois voters. As a first-time candidate with deep pockets, Rauner has branded himself a political outsider, who will challenge the Springfield status quo and public unions in the mold of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. He also launched a ballot initiative to create term limits through a constitutional amendment. Rauner recently started a “Hammer and Shake” website and social media campaign that emphasizes his promises to hammer out the special interests in Illinois government and shake up Springfield. But Rauner has also avoid-

ed talking in detail about his work as a venture capitalist. His recently disclosed federal income tax returns show that he made $53 million in 2012 from various hedge funds and business partnerships. Rauner’s business dealings at the Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR also helped Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel earn millions after Emanuel left the Clinton administration to become an investment banker. The two have remained friends. Going forward, Rauner likely will use his large war chest to increase his recognition with suburban and downstate Republican voters, while his primary rivals hammer away at his political inexperience and ties to powerful Chicago Democrats.

Glen Oak Restaurant unveils its new menu GLEN ELLYN – We made a happy discovery when we stepped inside Glen Oak Restaurant on a recent Sunday, finding ourselves hungry but not sure what we were in the mood for foodwise. Art posters dot the walls of the downtown Glen Ellyn eatery, whose high-ceilinged, airy space has lots of elbow room, with tables and comfortable booths. Dining there for the first time, we noticed the unusual touch of casters on the chairs for ease of motion. With expansive windows all around for views, we enjoyed watching the trains a block away. A friendly server brought over warm rolls, quickly followed by the French onion soup we’d ordered. It was an ideal antidote to a bitterly wintry day. A telltale clue that it was freshly homemade were the chunky onions and an errant bayleaf. My dining companion was pleased the soup wasn’t too salty, adding, “There’s a zesty bite to it.” For his main course, he opted for the Reuben sandwich. The tender corned beef was piled high on rye, with just the right proportion of sauerkraut and melted Swiss, and a crunchy dill pickle. The sandwich normally is served with Thousand Island dressing, but he changed it up with bleu cheese. The Reuben passed the test with flying colors. I focused on the breakfast menu, which is served all day. An avowed omelet fan, I wasn’t disappointed with a delicious blend of creamy cheese, grilled onions, spinach and ham. For a side, I chose hash browns, which arrived light, slightly crispy and ready to be seasoned to personal liking. My companion felt compelled to complete the homey diner experience with a slice of warm cherry pie a la mode for a sweet finish to an enjoyable meal. Its Facebook page states the shift reflects patrons’ preference to dine out for breakfast and lunch rather than dinner. The full bar service will continue. And late afternoon and evenings, the restaurant will be available for private events. We’re looking forward to trying other dishes next time around, knowing we won’t leave hungry. The ample leftovers we took home tasted great for lunch the next day. The new menu offers a wide array of breakfast

specialties including sweet or savory crepes, multiple Benedict variations and gluten-free pancakes, plus panini, burgers, wraps, salads, sandwiches and other fare. We learned Glen Oak has been around for three decades, and now we know why.

The Mystery Diner is a newsroom employee at Suburban Life Media. The diner’s identity is not revealed to the restaurant staff before or during the meal. Only positive dining experiences will result in published reviews.

Just how far away from Playoffs are Bears? Hub Arkush

Of the 12 teams that started the 2013 playoffs, the Bears only played four of them. In five games against Green Bay (2), Cincinnati, New Orleans and Philadelphia, the Bears were 2-3. The Bengals game was the first game of the season and the Bengals did as much or more to lose it as the Bears did to win it, kind of like Cincinnati’s third consecutive first round playoff exit last Sunday. Their other win over the Packers was accomplished without Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. Including the Bears game in which Rodgers went out after their first possession, the Packers were 2-5-1 without Rodgers including losses to the Giants, Lions and Steelers. The Bears losses to New Orleans and Philadelphia were their only two

losses of the year in which they were noncompetitive, and their other five losses besides a loss to the Packers were to Detroit (2) and the last place Rams, Vikings and Redskins. The Bears are clearly not in the same league with this year’s playoff teams. For starters, the Bears need to get better at quarterback. Seven of the 12 playoff starters including Nick Foles, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick (91.6) had better passer ratings than Jay Cutler and all but Kaepernick were at least 12 points better at 101.2 and above while Cutler was 89.2. The other five Alex Smith (89.1), Andy Dalton (88.8), Cam Newton (88.8), Tom Brady (87.3) and Andrew Luck (87.0) were all almost even with Cutler in rating, all of them threw more touchdowns and only Dalton and Newton threw more picks. You tell me, other than Dalton is there a QB in the group you wouldn’t take over Cutler? The Bears are very competitive

with all of these playoff clubs at running back and wide receiver. With the possible exception of the Broncos, the Bears are better than any of those clubs at those positions. The only 2013 playoff teams that aren’t clearly more talented on the offensive line than the Bears are Indianapolis, San Diego and Green Bay. The Bears line was effective most of the time this season, but it’s not capable of taking over games the way the 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, Panthers, Broncos, Patriots and Chiefs can at times. If you’re a Bears fan you already know that defensively they just don’t match up, particularly in the NFC. Seattle, the number one seed in the NFC also is first in the NFL in scoring defense. The second seeded Panthers are second in the league in fewest points allowed, the fifth seeded 49ers are third and the sixth seeded Saints are fourth. In the AFC, the Bengals and Chiefs tied for fifth in the league in scoring defense, the Colts were ninth in the league, the Patriots 10th and the Char-

gers were actually 11th. Nine of the 12 playoff teams are in the top 11 in scoring defense. In that top 11 only the Cardinals – seventh in points allowed and 10-6 – and the Dolphins – eighth and 8-8 – failed to make the playoffs. The Bears were 30th in scoring defense in 2013, tied with the Redskins and only the Vikings were worse. The Bears dramatic improvement on offense under Marc Trestman this year was exciting and at times a lot of fun to watch. But their decline from fifth in the NFL in total defense in 2012, eighth vs. the run and third in points allowed is the reason they fell from 10-6 to 8-8 and are not currently a legitimate contender. It is quite possible the Bears will improve at quarterback as Cutler spends more time with Trestman, but the only way they’re going back to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons and just the second time in the last eight is by turning over the defensive half of their roster with a lot more talent.

Those quarterbacks, though, all signed with teams that did not just throw $54 million guaranteed at its starter. Of the teams paying the most guaranteed money for its starting quarterback, only one rewarded its backup more than $1 million in base salary last season: the Lions paid Shaun Hill $2.4 million (Kyle Orton restructured his deal to lower his base salary after Tony Romo got paid). Backups for Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are still on their rookie deals, Joe Flacco’s backup – Tyrod Taylor – made a little more than a half million, while Matt Ryan’s backup – Dominique Davis – made $480,000. McCown’s brother, Luke, made $840,000 as Drew Brees’ backup. The Bears would need to find an amount that works for McCown, but also isn’t dedicating too much 2014 money to the quarterback position, one

that doesn’t need nearly as much improvement as the other side of the ball. That’s a reminder that we don’t know how McCown fits in the Bears’ priorities during the next few months with a defense to fix, but we have a good idea where he is among Cutler’s priorities. “I’d like to see him come back,” Cutler said after signing his seven-year contract. “I know we’d love to have him back. I know Phil touched on it. We’d like to have him back in the building just because of the amount of work he does behind the scenes with the younger players and myself. Just the experience he brings to the quarterback room, it’s very valuable. “We’ll see how that works out.” McCown will have his suitors, and he’ll keep in mind his four kids that live in North Carolina as he decides what’s best for his family. By the time free agency opens on March 11, the Bears will have a better grasp on their cap situation, how McCown would fit into the fold and if they can bring a fan and team favorite back next season.

Jay Cutler received the richest check the franchise has signed, but what’s next for his backup? Josh McCown played sensational football in his five starts and time in relief in two other games, while also igniting a quarterback controversy (albeit, outside the walls Josh of Halas Hall) during McCown what coach Marc Trestman referred to as Cutler’s best season. McCown, who turns 35 in July, completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and one interception, good for a passer rating of 109.0. “Love to have Josh back. I’ve expressed that to him,” general manager Phil Emery said Thursday. “Josh, through his play, has earned the right to have choices, and he’s got a lot of them and he’ll have a lot of them. He does

know he has a home here and that we’ll do everything we can to make it work if he decides he still wants to play here.” Can the Bears afford McCown? It may seem like a ridiculous question when talking about a 35-year-old backup, journeyman quarterback who made $840,000 in 2013. But, as Emery said, McCown will have options. The Bears signed Jason Campbell to a $3.5 million deal in 2012 with a $2 million signing bonus, so McCown and his representation could use that as a place to start. Or, they could look at the highest-paid backups in the league. Benet ready for second-half tests By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com LISLE – Leaving the Proviso West Holiday Tournament with a 2-2 record wasn’t quite what Benet’s boys basketball team and head coach Gene Heidkamp had in mind. But considering the Redwings have bigger goals down the road, posting a .500 tournament record against some tough competition could serve them well as they start the second half of the season. “We did all right,” Heidkamp said. “We went 2-2 and lost two close games. I’d like to have played better, but all in all it was fine.” Benet alternated wins and losses at the tournament. After topping Foreman, 69-52, to start the tourney, Benet fell to Providence St. Mel, 54-50, in the second round. A 76-51 win over Hillcrest on Dec. 28 preceded a 70-67 loss to Rockford Auburn on Dec. 30. In the tournament finale, Sean O’Mara’s layup with 32 seconds left tied the game at 67-67, but Auburn’s Zayvious Hoover drained three free throws with three seconds left to deal the Redwings a 70-67 defeat. O’Mara led all scorers in the game with 30 points, while Liam Nelligan added 15 points and Colin Bonnett tallied 10. O’Mara was the game’s leading scorer in each game. He had 22 points against Hillcrest, 25 against Providence St. Mel and 20 against Foreman. The senior center was named to the all-tournament first team. “Sean draws a lot of attention, but the other guys are doing fairly well, especially considering they’re guys who didn’t see a lot of playing time on varsity last year,” Heidkamp said. A better performance at the tourney was hoped for, but the Redwings have more interest in a long playoff run, and testing themselves at Proviso West was a good precursor to the grind of the postseason. “I think it was productive from the standpoint that we have areas where we have to get better, and we saw that,”
