Plans for downtown retail, residential complex underway By ANNA SCHIER

aschier@shawmedia.com LISLE – Village trustees met with developers Monday to discuss a retail and residential project at the site of the former Village Hall, which officials hope will rejuvenate Lisle’s downtown. “Downtown development has been lacking for many years,” Mayor Joe Broda said. “Right now, everybody’s waiting for someone else to do something.” The development, called Main Street Village, would be at the northeast corner of Main Street and Burlington Avenue and would include retail, restaurants, parking, common areas and about 200 apartments, according to documents provided by the village. The project is estimated to cost about $40 million, said Jeff Prosapio, director of development for developer Marquette Companies. The Village Hall was torn down in the early 2000s, Lisle Community and Economic Development Director Tony Budzkowski said, and the property has been vacant ever since. Budzkowski said the project could break ground as soon as late 2014. The Village Board approved a letter of intent with

A rendering of a portion of the west side of Marquette Companies’ Main Street Village development shows the architecture along Main Street planned for the project. Marquette for the purchase and development of the property Feb. 17, according to village documents. The letter is not binding but sets the parameters within which the developer and village will work to complete a formalized agreement, documents state. As currently proposed, Main Street Village includes 15,025 square feet of retail space, 15,172 square feet of common areas and 256 parking spots, according to documents from Marquette provided by the village. It is not yet determined for whom the parking

will be designated, Budzkowski said. The design of the development is a combination of the prairie style and a more traditional aesthetic, he said. The majority of the structure is anticipated to be three floors tall, but there is a four-floor structure planned for the east portion of the building. The first floor will be largely public, retail and parking space, while the remaining floors will primarily contain one-bedroom apartments, as well as a few two-bedroom units. Prosapio said the property will be upscale and estimates

a 1,000-square-foot apartment will rent at $1,600 to $1,700 per month. The site is the largest property the village owns downtown, and Broda said he hopes it will be a catalyst for growth, drawing more retailers to the area and potentially influencing development north of the fire station and along Main Street to Ogden Avenue. Prosapio said Marquette prefers to build in established towns in proximity to transit options such as Metra. “Downtown Lisle had a lot of character,” he said. “You’ve got great connection on Metra.”

Budzkowski said the developer is aiming to attract young professionals, commuters and some seniors with the Main Street Village apartments. He also stressed that talks surrounding the development are preliminary. The village has been working with Marquette since mid-2013, but will not close on the sale until the project is discussed by the plan commission and receives zoning approval for details such as setbacks and parking. The site’s current mixed-use zoning will remain the same. Broda said he hopes to see contracts signed with restaurants for the property before closing on the sale. Marquette has requested that an about $325,000 fee newdowntown developments typically pay to use a village-built stormwater detention pond be waived, Budzkowski said. During Monday’s public comment, there was some discussion of the already-limited downtown parking. Village officials noted the parking concerns as a matter to consider moving forward. Lisle attorney Bill Wonais objected to closing Spencer Avenue for the project, although one modification addressed at the workshop was the addition of a pedestrian elevated walkway to align with the road.

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin speaks at the panel discussion “Smart Streamlining: Effective Government Consolidation” on Monday at National Louis University in Lisle. The BGA hosted the event and Reboot Illinois COO Madeleine Doubek moderated the forum.

A Natural, Noninvasive

Back and Neck Pain Approach At the ProMED Disc Institute, our goal is to offer aid to patients whose previous options were to simply suffer with pain, take endless prescription painkillers, or undergo injections or invasive surgeries. Typical patients find spinal decompression to be a relaxing, painless procedure that in most cases can be completed in a few weeks on an outpatient basis. This revolutionary FDA cleared technology offers a pain free solution to patients with bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, pinched nerves, posterior facet syndrome, sciatica, neck and arm pain, and spinal stenosis. We are excited to bring this revolutionary procedure to the Chicagoland area!

LISLE – When State. Rep. Chris Welch, D-Westchester, sat on the Proviso High Schools District 209 Board of Education, and residents would ask about low test scores, he would often start by explaining how seven different grade school districts fed the single high school. Welch used that example of ineffectual layers of government during a panel discussion Monday titled “Smart Streamlining: Effective Government Consolidation,” hosted by the Better Government Association at National Louis University in Lisle. “I think that if you look at certain areas where it can be smart, and a good idea to (consolidate), we should,” he said. “We should have a discussion about it. And I wold love for the school consolidation issue to be back on the table.” Welch and DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who also spoke Monday, repeated throughout the discussion that Illinois needs consolidation in local governments, but only on a case-by-case basis. The discussion is one of many planned by the nonpartisan association and Reboot Illinois to bring attention to Illinois’ unusually high number of local government bodies – 7,000 in the state, which is 40 percent higher than the next two biggest states, Texas and

California, according to the association. Monday’s event was attended by about 100 people, many of whom were township employees throughout DuPage County. Cronin has made consolidation a priority with his “Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency” initiative. He and Welch were joined by Robert Porter, a former longtime park district administrator, township supervisor and current consultant to the Township Officials of Cook County and Brian Costin, director of government reform for the Illinois Policy Institute. Much talk Monday night fell on townships, and whether it’s possible to consolidate some with municipalities without losing service levels. Welch’s House Bill 4425, which is waiting in Springfield, would allow voters to consolidate River Forest Township into the municipal government. He said that would make sense, because they share the same borders, as opposed to some townships that serve a dozen different towns. Porter said townships and other local governments were largely created by residents by referendum in response to service needs, and should only be removed or consolidated if the impetus comes from resident discussion. He took issue with the consolidation discussion following a bill such as HB4425, instead of

whether you’re in township government or a fire district or a mosquito abatement district. You said it yourself Mr. Porter, why don’t we engage in discussion, why don’t we have a real honest discussion about what we can do?” Costin said that with Illinois’ many local layers, it can be impossible for watchdog organizations or residents to keep track of tax dollars. “We found an example in Elgin where people had 16 layers of local government that they were paying property taxes into,” he said. “What that means is, it becomes virtually impossible for someone to become educated and participate. “In some ways it invites corruption, because there are so many local agencies that the U.S. attorney’s office actually says there are too many local government agencies to adequately police.” Reboot Illinois COO Madeleine Doubek moderated the forum.

the other way around. He also touted the accessibility of local officials versus those of larger governmental bodies. “I think there has to be open dialogue and discussion generated by the residents,” he said. “Versus a political agency or a political person looking to enhance another notch in their gun barrel for advancement of their career or their organization or whatever they want to try and accomplish.” Cronin said his Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency initiative has more often taken away from the county’s authority, with steps such as handing fire protection over to municipalities, and has not consolidated more power or authority with his organization. “Some of the innuendo here about somebody who’s interested in political attention, you know, I think that’s a little irresponsible,” Cronin said. “I’m here to say we all serve the same taxpayers,

Bridge Communities asks area kids: What’s it like to be homeless? In DuPage County, it can be hard to teach our kids about homelessness in the suburbs, especially when the face of homelessness has changed so much throughout the years. At Bridge Communities, this is a reality we face every day. How do we explain what homelessness truly means and what kind of impact it makes on our kids and on our community? More importantly, how do we answer the question, “Why?” Bridge saw this need, and created the What’s It Like To COMMUNITY Be Homeless? curriculum VOICE as a way to teach kids about Lisa homelessness. The activities Doyle we after are geared toward school-age children and are appropriate to teach in schools, religious and youth groups, scout troops and more. There is a variety of activities that the groups can perform, based on the age of the kids, including:

First through third grades

• Purchase or borrow from the library “Cooper’s Tale” or “Fly Away Home,” and use the discussion questions to explore why and how families become homeless. • Identify an organization in your area that serves the homeless. Choose and complete a service project that helps its clients. • Complete the activity “What Would You Take?”

Fourth through 12th grades

• Using the questions, explore together as a group the reasons why families become homeless and why homelessness is harmful to children. • Complete the activity Calculate It! • Visit a homeless shelter or the offices of an agency that serves the homeless to learn more about this issue. Students can research and develop their own project that serves the homeless. In addition to benefiting from taking part in these experiences, kids can earn scout patches as well. After completing the activities from “What’s It Like To Be Homeless?” troop leaders can order Bridge’s “A Heart for the Homeless” scout patches for $2 apiece from www.bridgecommunities.org. We hope these activities can answer some of the tough questions your kids may have about poverty and homelessness and help them keep the homeless in their hearts.

Students shout “Surprise!” as their teachers enter the Tate Woods Elementary School gym in Lisle for a surprise party for the teachers.

What do students think of their teachers? Thanks to one youngster at Tate Woods Elementary School, educators there don’t have to wonder. At the suggestion of first-grader Nyah Strupp, the school threw teachers a surprise party where students displayed a “thank you sign” and read a book to teachers. It’s great to see a student body and staff so much in sync with each other. There could be some construction as soon as next year at the old Village Hall site in downtown Lisle. The village approved a letter of intent with Marquette Cos. to redevelop the site into 200 apartment units and 10,000 square feet of retail space. A lot of work has already gone into reshaping downtown, and this looks like another great step in that direction.

Gold medals with standing ovations to you all! We so appreciate all your hard work and long hours during this “Endless Winter of 2014.”

This morning, traffic was tied up northbound from past 16th Street to 14th Street, and 16th Street eastbound from Lincoln School, all the way west past East Avenue. This is ridiculous. Cars are just jammed and double parked and nobody’s doing anything about it. I think it’s about time the police enforced the laws and eliminated this safety hazard.

ASPIRIN CAUTION

Q: I take aspirin daily. Are there any dental considerations of which I should be aware? A: Aspirin is a proven pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, and it can help reduce fever. You do, however, have to be careful in its use. Because aspirin thins the blood, some people are on a daily low-dose aspirin regimen as part of blood-pressure treatment or because of heart problems. One danger aspirin poses on the dentalhealth front is the practice by some folks of chewing aspirin. Chewing aspirin can severely damage the teeth’s enamel. It can also harm the soft tissue of the mouth. Some people are hesitant about swallowing a whole aspirin pill or don’t want to wait for a tablet to dissolve in water, so they pop the tablet in their mouth and crush it with their teeth. Studies have found that a steady practice of that, especially among people who take multiple aspirins daily, can significantly erode teeth. Another harmful practice is to press aspirin against the gum as treatment for a toothache. The acid in aspirin can burn the soft tissue of the gum. Because, as mentioned above, aspirin is a blood thinner, talk with your dentist about your intake if you are planning any oral surgery. Naturally, you should always make your dentist aware of any medication you are taking. Ask him or her about the proper role of aspirin in your overall health-care plan.

Your Dogs Home Away From Home While You’re On Spring Break Vacation…. Who’s Going Love and Take Care Of Your Beloved Pet Florida, Hawaii, or the Bahamas…..Where are you going for Spring break? You don’t care as long as you’re not here and it’s warm … right? The temperature has been relentless and brutal. Basically I feel like that old pizza that you forget about in the back of the freezer that hasn’t been seen in a year. Frozen and covered in ice crystals that have actually burned the food by being too cold for too long. Too long is right…. Now that you know you’re going someplace warm do you have a place for your pet to enjoy their time away during their vacation? …No well maybe I can help you in making that decision. Firstly I know how hard this is…you’re not sure if the neighbors can watch them or the in-laws have the time…they like to go on vacation too. Secondly what are the options, vet…kennel….day

care center…how do you decide? (drum roll please) Solution… you gotta Do A Tour. You Gotta meet the people. As you know …You know your pet best. You will make your decision based on how you connect with that person that will be in the care of your pet. It takes a bit of time to visit and get a feel for the people but its really the best way to do it. I know I’m biased because this is what I do but having done this for nearly 13 years this is what people say to me. They are glad that they came out to visit us and they were very happy to see the facilities and go through the daily routine. I can say all sorts of nice things but here are some of our reviews… 12/8/2010 David from Willow Brook We been using this kennel for 8 years. We are very happy with the care and attention our 2 dogs receive. The dogs are actually excited to go there! The staff play with them daily and give them baths before pick-up.

5/25/2012 Mike from Lombard These guys are awesome. Other than the dog park, this is the only place that my dog actually gets excited when we pull up in the parking lot. They’re always nice, they LOVE my boxer Fenny, and she’s always in high spirits when we pick her up. We will continue to always use this place. I have talked your ear off…if you have any questions please give us call at 630-969-3145. We actually live on the property with our pet clients so this is more than just a job… this is home for us Give us a call at 630-969-3145 we would love to show you our little slice of heaven. The Village will continue to closely monitor the situation and work with its supplier to replenish the salt supply. Here's what to expect during snow and ice events: • Salt mixed with some sand will be applied to all Priority 1 roads (roads with the highest traffic volume including roads near schools and those leading to Good Samaritan Hospital), hills, curves and intersections. • Downtown parking lots/sidewalks and train station platforms will continue to be cleared and salted. • Neighborhood roads may be snow packed. Health Department trains police on heroin reversal drug By NATHAN LURZ

Narcan fast facts

nlurz@shawmedia.com Fine mists of water sprayed the air Friday at the DuPage County Health Department during a training session for area police officers, in an effort to ensure 2013’s record number of heroin overdose deaths isn’t repeated. The lesson was part of the department’s DuPage Narcan Program, which puts the non-addictive drug Naloxone, or Narcan, in the hands of local police, allowing them to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. With a rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013, the drug could be a valuable tool, said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala. “These numbers are not nameless, nor are they faceless,” she said. “Each one represents a life lost.” Police are often the first responders to the scene of a drug overdose, sometimes before ambulances, said County Coroner Richard Jorgensen. Those two or three minutes can be the difference between life and death, he said. Essentially, those overdosing on heroin become so relaxed they fall asleep and stop breathing, according to Jorgensen. If first responders give the person a dose of Narcan before their brain dies, they can survive. Since mid-November, the program has trained officers from 10 departments, as well as an additional 13 Friday. The program’s first participants, including those from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, have successfully trained 364 officers and equipped them with two doses of Narcan each, according to the health department. They have been deployed since mid-January, while the additional estimated 541 participants in the Jan. 21 and Feb. 21 sessions hit the streets in

• Nonaddictive • Can be used as a nasal spray or shot • Usually works within two to five minutes, immediately beginning withdrawal symptoms • Wears off in 30 to 90 minutes • People who have received Narcan in an overdose situation are more likely to seek treatment • Those who call 911 when there has been an overdose are immune to criminal charges for drug possession under the Good Samaritan Overdose Law • Nonmedical personnel, including civilians, can be trained in the use of Narcan

Police officials, including Hanover Park Sgt. Kathleen McClaughry, learn to properly give a person experiencing a heroin overdose a nasal spray of Narcan on Friday at the DuPage County Health Department.

“This is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.” Richard Jorgensen County coroner

March and May, respectively. Ayala said there haven’t yet been any cases where Narcan has been used by trainees. She said the department’s $40,000 investment has sufficiently funded the program, including the $16 individual doses of Narcan, through its most recent training session. The department was looking for partners in the medical community to continue it. This represents one of many county government actions to address what officials call a growing epidemic, including the $100,000 education initiative Be a Hero in DuPage. It is also the first county-wide application of a 2010 state law allowing nonmedical personnel to be

trained to use the drug, Ayala said. Jorgensen said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin is working on language for a bill clarifying that trained responders using Narcan can’t be held liable in a civil case. Villa Park Police Chief and member of the DuPage Chiefs of Police Association Robert Pavelchik said the association already had a subcommittee devoted to the topic, but thought more needed to be done. “We realized some time ago, especially with the assistance of the coroner, that this has been a problem we’re not going to arrest our way out of,” he said. Jorgensen said that attitude,

along with the treatment of addiction as a medical problem instead of a punishable offense, represented a different mindset than that found in the county 15 to 20 years ago. By keeping people alive, he said, it keeps the chance for recovery alive. “One of the people that we work with says that ‘Dying of an overdose is not the first step for recovery or treatment,’ ” Jorgensen said. “You have to understand that this is a medical disease, this is an addiction, this is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.”

DuPage Narcan Program has trained 23 police departments across three sessions for a total of 1,100 potential trainees. There are plans to train an additional 10 departments and public defender groups for a total of 1,244 officers by May. The health department is seeking additional funding to continue the program.

Restaurant reviews

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game. Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal. On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

Bulldog Ale House is just off Lies Road in Carol Stream. There are locations in Roselle and New Lenox, as well.

The “super grande platter” of appetizers usually features mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels; on a recent location, according to its onthe baked brownie bottom pie evening, mini corn dogs were substituted for the mozzarella. line beer list. They’ve got all (again, topped with ice cream, it was terrific. Strips of skirt steak are sautéed with fresh garlic and mushrooms, then combined with red wine and brown sauce over fettuccine. Add a dollop of sour cream and the dish is complete. If I hadn’t been so full from the appetizer, I easily could have polished it off; instead, it made for a terrific lunch the next day. My companion was similarly stuffed from the appetizer, and selected the pot

roast over the pot pie, reasoning that the pot pie likely wouldn’t reheat as well. The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

t National University of Health Sciences, if you’ve finished your general education requirements, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in as little as 16 months. Not only that, NUHS gives you the freedom to tailor your own degree program by letting you create a course list that matches your unique goals. Whether you plan to use your science education for a career in business, health care, or as a prelude to graduate school, you can construct a specific program to give you the best preparation. According to Dr. Randy Swenson, dean of NUHS’ College of Allied Health Sciences, “You can choose from any combination of courses in our BS program to complete your bachelor’s degree. There are no required core courses, just a requirement that you earn 64 credits. So no matter which of our many courses you pick to meet those credits, you’re on track.” That means that if you are interested in medical administration or hospital work, you can choose courses in Medical Spanish, Medical Terminology and Computer Software. Planning a career in sports and fitness, how about adding courses in Sports and Performance Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology? If you are looking for a place in research or laboratory work, you might choose courses in Research Methods and Statistics, or Epidemiology. If you want to learn more about how the brain works, NUHS offers Biopsychology and Neuroscience. “Most of our students are interested in nutrition,” Dr. Swenson says. “That’s why NUHS has six separate courses in nutrition and food science available in the BS program.” NUHS is a primary destination for those seeking a professional career in natural health care. Originally founded in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National’s academic programs now encompass chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, oriental medicine, massage therapy, and more. The best part of earning your bachelor’s degree at National University is that you’ll be taught by many of the same faculty who teach in the professional degree programs, and you’ll use the graduate-level facilities of one of the world’s top universities specializing in natural medicine. NUHS boasts an outstanding library of 13,000+ volumes devoted to health science, a cadaver-based gross anatomy laboratory, as well as an on-campus student clinic where you can take advantage of free health services. NUHS’ beautiful 35-acre Lombard campus is conveniently located in suburban Chicago, and offers on-campus housing, financial aid counseling, a student fitness center, and several student social and professional networking organizations. Want to learn more? Visit www.nuhs.edu to apply online, schedule a visit, or view the entire line-up of course descriptions and start envisioning how NUHS can help prepare you for your future goals.

usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Northwood students work with one advisor from application all the way to graduation, assisting them with registration, academic advising, financial aid and ordering books. “With classes in eight-week and weekend formats, students can complete two or more courses in the same 16-weeks it takes traditional students to complete one class,” she says. Students also have the opportunity to earn credit for work and military experience. One student earned 27 credits for her prior work experience, Rosen said. “This made a tremendous impact on the quality of her life by enabling her to complete her degree faster and with substantial savings on top of it.”

Lisle’s Ben Buchelt wrestles at 145 pounds during Lisle’s Steve Melichar invite earlier this season. Buchelt was one of five state tournament qualifiers the Lions had this season.

Five lisle wrestlers live state dream By JASON ROSSI

jrossi@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – On the state’s biggest stage, Lisle’s wrestling team was well represented. Drew Sonnefeldt, Jeff Chan, Danny Grant, Ben Buchelt and Jared Arellano all wrestled for the Lions in the Class 1A state tournament, which was contested Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the State Farm Center at the University of Illinois. Unfortunately for the Lisle quintet, no one made it to the medal stand as one of the top six wrestlers in the state. “We were very pleased to have five guys at state,” Lisle head coach John Davis said.

“I don’t know if we wrestled as well as we could have, but just for those guys to have the opportunity to be down there was outstanding.” Buchelt was Lisle’s lone repeat state qualifier. After making it to state at 138 pounds last season, the senior headed to Champaign at 145 this year. He won his first state match with a pin at the

5:11 mark of his bout against Deer Creek-Mackinaw’s Taylor Thomas, but then suffered a narrow 4-2 overtime loss in the quarterfinals and went into the backdraw. He was bounced from the tourney in his first wrestleback match, but his season still was a success. At the end of the state tourney, he had a 35-5 record, won tournament titles at Polo,

Lisle, the Interstate Eight Conference, regional and sectional, and surpassed 110 wins for his career. “I feel bad for Ben,” Davis said. “I thought he had a chance to place, and it just didn’t happen. But he had a very outstanding high school career for us.” Chan (113) and Grant (126) capped their careers by making their first state tournament appearances. Chan carried a 29-7 record out of the state meet, while Grant was 28-13 by the end of the state tourney. Arellano was making his state debut at 285. He left state with a 26-9 record on the season. Sonnefeldt was a regional champ and was second at the

sectional as he stormed to the state tourney in his rookie season. He wrestled two matches at state and left Champaign with a 25-10 record. The state tourney wasn’t the end of the road for any of Lisle’s wrestlers. The Lions dominated and won the regional they hosted on Feb. 8 to advance to the team state series. Lisle was scheduled to wrestle Plano at the Class 1A Coal City sectional on Tuesday with a berth in Saturday’s state finals on the line. When the two teams met in an I-8 dual meet in December, Plano won 60-12. Sonnefeldt, Chan and Jack Pawlowicz were match winners in the first dual against the Reapers.

The Redwings scored 39 points and finished in 10th place at the Metea Valley sectional meet Saturday. They did not have any state qualifiers.

Benet, Bolingbrook boys earn top postseason seeds The Class 3A and 4A boys basketball playoffs tip off next week, and while teams from the area will head different directions at the start of the postseason, the end goal is the same — to reach Carver Arena in Peoria for the state finals March 21 and 22.

No. 16 Lemont or No. 17 Oswego East Outlook: The Redwings’ 16-7 record as of Feb. 21 may not look all that impressive, but they definitely earned their No. 1 seed in the sectional. Benet has not lost to a team with a losing record, and in defeats against Fenwick, Marian Catholic, St. Viator and Stevenson, last year’s state runner-up, the Redwings have faced some of the best teams and players in

the state. Sean O’Mara, a 6-foot-9 Xavier recruit, is the centerpiece of Benet’s offense and is one of the top post players in the state. The senior is a dangerous player in the paint, both offensively and defensively, but the Redwings also have a host of dangerous shooters, Collin Pellettieri, Colin Bonnett and Liam Nelligan among them, that complement O’Mara’s play. Benet advanced to the sectional championship game last season, and a similar playoff run isn’t out of the question this year. If the Redwings win their playoff opener, they will advance to the regional title game at 7 p.m. March 7, where they would face either No. 8 Waubonsie Valley or No. 9 Naperville North.

Gage Davis (IPFW) and Kenny Williams (Eastern Michigan) are college-bound seniors, and Prentiss Nixon and Julian Torres are juniors who seem destined to play at the next level, but the Raiders’ core goes deeper than that. Josh Dillingham, Shakur Triplett, C.J. Redmond, Devon Sams and Brodric Thomas have also had standout games this season, and that depth should serve Bolingbrook well in the postseason. The outright champions of the SouthWest Suburban Blue conference, the Raiders, the top seed in the regional, would move on to the regional title game at 7 p.m. March 7 with a win against DGS or Batavia.

jans so far, but they have the pieces in place to make some noise in the postseason. In 6-foot-7 junior forward David Edwards and 6-5 sophomore Matt Mahlke, North has a solid presence in the paint. Guard Myles Farley and forward Ray Greco provide veteran leadership, while sophomore and varsity newcomer Devin Blake is an explosive playmaker that creates matchup problems for opposing defenses. Hinsdale South has size to match with 6-foot-8 Barret Benson, and Larry Motuzis is another playmaker to keep an eye on. With a win over the Hornets, the Trojans would face No. 4 Hinsdale Central in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

with an abundance of size, so the secret to the Mustangs’ success is no secret. Anyone that has seen them play knows their strength is the outside shot. But knowing about it and stopping it are two different things, and since the calendar flipped to 2014, South has been on fire from long range. Danny Spinuzza, Paul Engo III, Wes Dahle, Kovas Rugienius, Mantas Augustinavicius and Matt Zinnecker can all bury the 3-pointer, but teams that over-commit to defending the perimeter pay the price because all those players, plus Darryl Howard, Javon Turner and DeAndre Washington, are all capable of slashing to the hoop and finishing at the rim. If the Mustangs can move past Batavia, they would face Bolingbrook in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lisle’s boys basketball team defeated Westmont earlier in the season, but the Lions couldn’t complete the season sweep as they lost to the Sentinels 57-54 Monday in a first round game at the Class 2A Aurora Christian regional. The Lions (4-23) had a 25-23 halftime lead but trailed 41-34 at the end of the third quarter and were behind 43-34 early in the fourth before mounting a comeback. Nick Massura hit a 3-pointer, Shane Murray and Massura converted three-point plays, and Jeremy Glavanovits and Murray tallied baskets as part of a13-4 run that tied the game at 47-47 with just over three minutes to play. Westmont responded with a 5-0 surge to grab back the lead, and Lisle wasn’t able to

an end in a 54-37 loss against Neuqua Valley in Monday’s Joliet Central sectional semifinal. Emily Schramek scored a team-high 12 points against Neuqua and Emily Eshoo scored nine. In the game against Naperville North, Schramek led the way with 18 points. Kathleen Doyle had 17 and sophomore Katie Jaseckas had eight points. Benet finished the year with a 21-9 in the final season in the storied career of head coach Peter Paul, who finished with over 600 wins in 28 years leading the Redwings.

Even though we know a lot about life in our oceans, marine scientists who study the sea often discover new, startling things about animals we are aware of, and they are even still discovering new species that live in the deepest parts of the oceans. The oceans of the Earth are so large and so deep, there will be more for scientists to discover for a long time to come. At right, you will see a description of each pictured animal.
