Althoff received the challenge from Eric Renn of Lisle Savings Bank and, in turn, challenged the chamber’s Executive Board. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is an awareness campaign where participants nominate friends and family to donate to fight ALS and/or dump a bucket of ice water on themselves. It has helped raise more than $100 million for the ALS Association, compared to $2.8 million from July 29 to Aug. 29, 2013.

LISLE – Lisle residents are invited to get creative Saturday at the Lisle Park District’s second annual Art in the Park event. “This is very exciting,” said Lisle Mayor Joe Broda. “It brings the community together.” The festivities, which take place from 1 to 5 p.m. at Community Park Bandshell and the Sea Lion Aquatic Park parking lot, will include artist booths, a sidewalk chalk contest and an auction of locally sponsored and decorated toddler adirondack chairs. Vendors from throughout the DuPage County area will showcase a range of artistic media, including photography, painting, apparel, ceramics, pottery, drawing, jewelry, glasswork, metal and wood. Among them is Windy City Woodturners, which meets at the Lisle Recreation Center. The group attended last year’s event and will demonstrate their craft, which involves chiseling wood against a lathe, this weekend. “We are quite pleased to support events by the Lisle Park District,” said the organization’s president, Don Johnston. Kids and adults alike can unleash their inner artist during the Chalk-It! competition. Participants will be sorted by grade into categories ranging from preschool to professional, and will be assigned a blacktop square to produce their work, which will be judged by Park District staff starting at 4 p.m. To register, call 630-964-3410

Library partners with businesses for annual program SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – The Lisle Library District’s annual I Love My Lisle Library Card business partnership program is underway, according to a district news release. Held in conjunction with National Library Card SignUp Month, library patrons can receive discounts at 45 participating local businesses by showing their library card through Sept. 30. “I’ve had patrons who inquire about the list of discounts because they want to pre-plan their shopping trips for the month,” Library Circulation Services staff member Virginia McKeefery-Reynolds said in the release. “From discounts at local restaurants and retail stores to discounted activities for kids, there really is something for everyone.”
McKeefery-Reynolds has coordinated the program since its inception in 2009. Participating businesses vary widely and include restaurants, retailers, healthcare providers, learning centers, local locations of national chains and more. Among them is Leo’s Cleaners, 4752 Main St., which has been involved with the program from the beginning. “It’s worked out well. We’ve had some good responses,” said owner Dennis Callan in the release. “We’ve had people come into the store and then run out saying they forgot their library card. It really feels like a community event.” To get a complete list of participating businesses and discounts, go to lislelibrary. THE PERIODONTAL EXAM Q: What happens in a periodontal exam? A: The goal of the periodontal exam is to assess the health of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. As part of that assessment, your dentist will probe along the gum line to measure the depth of the pockets between the gum and the tooth. The dentist will use a narrow instrument called a periodontal probe, a rule of sorts, with lines marked in millimeters. Abnormally deep pockets are a sign of periodontal, or gum, disease. The dentist will also be observant about whatever bleeding occurs during the exam. Bleeding generally indicates inflammation. Swollen, red and bleeding gums may alert a person to a gum problem, but clinical measurements throughout the mouth are necessary to determine if true periodontal pocketing has developed. The periodontal exam also includes observation and documentation of the color and texture of gum tissue, the extent of gum recession, evidence of any tooth grinding and a measurement of tooth mobility. Your dentist will record all these observations not only to determine whether you have the beginnings of gum disease, but also to set a baseline of statistics and observations against which to compare future exams. Talk with your dentist about ways to keep your gums healthy.

Home sales are up in Lisle SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – Home sales in Lisle for July rose month over month and year over year, according to data provided by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Thirty two detached, single-family homes were sold in July 2014, compared to 28 in June 2014 and 23 in July of the previous year, a 39.1 percent increase, the data stated. Prices year to year grew
as well, from an average of $362,456 in July 2013 to $399,981 a year later – a difference of 10.4 percent, according to the data. Median home prices saw a similar upswing – $394,000 in July 2014 from $335,000 a year earlier, or 17.6 percent. Lisle houses in June 2014 sold for an average of $395,070 and a median of $410,000, the data stated. Sales Production Manager Brian Ernst of RE/MAX Action in Lisle said the numbers,

He predicts they will be down in August before picking up again in September and October. “It’s kind of a rollercoaster,” Ernst said. “What goes up must come down.” He suggested anyone thinking of selling do so in the fall during the second busy season.

Police and firefighters responded about 1:59 a.m. July 19 to the intersection of Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street for a report of a vehicle that had driven into a Naperville Park District quarry. Szot admitted to police he had been smoking marijuana earlier that day, and he had been drinking rum shots and beer at a local bar before the crash, prosecutors said at Szot’s bail hearing last month. He was released from DuPage County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $250,000 bail. Prosecutors said a marijuana
pipe had been found in Szot’s pocket. Szot’s blood-alcohol content was 0.142, above the legal limit of 0.08. If found guilty of the charges, Szot faces a maximum penalty of up to 28 years in prison. The two passengers in the vehicle – Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville – were unable to escape from the 2007 Chevy Impala that Szot was driving. They were located by fire and police divers in the car, which was 50 feet under water, and were taken to Edward Hospital in
Naperville, where they were pronounced dead. Police said the preliminary investigation indicates Szot was driving west on Aurora
Avenue and left the roadway at Eagle Street, crashing into several trees and landing in the quarry on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Teens charged after allegedly selling Ecstasy and cocaine
LIS
NAPERVILLE – Two Naperville teens recently were charged for allegedly selling Ecstasy and cocaine to undercover police, according to a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Marco A. M a r c o A . AguilarAguilar-Herre- Herrera ra, 19, of the 800 block of Benedetti Drive, was charged with the manufacture or delivery of Ecstasy after his arrest Aug. 7, at which time he reportedly brought an officer about 20 grams of the drug, the release stated. Making college more affordable for everyone Summer has ended, and that means it’s back-to-school time for families across the country. For those parents who recently loaded up the car and dropped their kids off at college, the excitement of another year of school is tempered by another year of looming tuition bills and ever-increasing education expenses. To take some of the guesswork out of financial planning, the House passed the Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act, which creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard, giving students and parents the tools to fully understand the total cost of college before deciding where COMMUNITY to continue their education. VOICE Another bill, the EmpowPeter ering Students Through Roskam Enhanced Financial Counseling Act, provides interactive counseling through an online tool each year a student participates in a federal loan program. By increasing loan awareness and financial planning before and throughout the college experience, we can eliminate surprise expenses and ensure students work through available grant and scholarship options to shrink the size of their student loan. The House also passed two bills that would streamline the tax code, making it easier for families to use tax credits to make college more affordable. The Student and Family Tax Simplification Act consolidates four existing education provisions into a single, modernized and permanent American Opportunity Tax Credit that families can use to offset tuition expenses, fees and course materials. Middle- and low-income families would be eligible for a 100 percent tax credit for the first $2,000 of eligible higher education expenses and a 25 percent tax credit for the next $2,000 of such expenses, providing relief for those who need it the most. The House also voted to reform the Child Tax Credit, indexing it to inflation and eliminating the marriage penalty so families can more easily receive their full eligible amount. Simplifying education tax credits ensures families can get the most savings possible, and students can spend less time worrying about financing their education, instead focusing on developing the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Obtaining a quality education is key to bettering the lives of our children and ensuring their long-term success, and getting a college degree shouldn’t mean a lifetime of student loan debt. These common-sense, bipartisan bills are a big step toward tackling the cost of higher education and opening up more opportunities for the next generation.

This is in response to the man who wondered about the riots in Ferguson, Mo. My husband had no vehicle, called me and before I arrived, a wonderful gentleman stopped and took them to the vet hospital. I was told he was employed at the nearby grade school. Later, he remained at the hospital until I arrived to be with him. Sadly, we did not get his name. I hope he knows how truly thankful we are. He made us realize there are people out there that really care and look out for others. With all the bad news we hear now from the media, there is sunshine. We will be forever grateful.

BRANCH PICKUP PROGRAM The Village will begin its final round of branch pick up for the 2014 Branch Pickup Program for single-family homes located within the Village of Lisle’s corporate limits. This program is free of charge.
adno=S0247133
The pick up areas and dates are as follows: • Homes located north of the Burlington Northern Train Tracks are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 8th. • Homes located between the Burlington Northern Train Tracks and Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 15th. • Homes located south of Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 22nd. Branch piles must be placed in the front parkway (not behind the resident’s property) by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled pickup week, but no earlier than the Friday before. We ask that homeowners adhere to the following guidelines when preparing their branch piles: • The Branch Pickup Program is intended for private residential branch trimming only and is not intended for whole trees or shrubs that have been removed. Material removed or trimmed by a contractor must be hauled away by the contractor. • For safer and easier handling, branches should be bundled with natural twine or rope – no nylon, plastic or metal. • Bundles are not to exceed 3 feet tall x 3 feet wide x 5 feet long and no more than 50 pounds. They should be lined out as close to the street as possible with cut ends facing the street. Single branches up to 8 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length should be placed separately from bundles. • Thorny material, vines, roots, stumps or landscape material (grasses, perennials, railroad ties, lumber) are not accepted. Once Village crews pass a residence during a scheduled week, they will not return. Material can be disposed of with the Waste Hauler in yard waste bags with yard waste stickers attached. Mulch is available for pick up at the corner of Front and Main Streets to residents living within the corporate limits. SEPTEMBER FOOD DRIVE AT VILLAGE HALL

Lemont is spending in all the wrong places
As a citizen of Lemont, I just was reading about the water suit we’re paying for, like, $5,200 or something. I was under the impression Lemont had wells. And I also noticed your article on the sports complex, another financial disaster, because I believe it’ll cost about $1 million just to fix it up. Joseph Academy closes DuPage County location By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com High-needs children living in the DuPage County area will have to go elsewhere to get specialized help now that a local nonprofit school has announced its closure. In a letter to DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin dated Aug. 19, Joseph Academy Founder and CEO Mike Schack addressed the end of the school’s DuPage County program. “After two years, we have not been able to sustain the Joseph Academy program in the former DuPage County Youth Home,” he wrote. The academy, which opened in December 2012 in Wheaton, served students with emotional, behavioral and learning challenges who were referred to the program through their school districts. Schack said his letter was sent “with a heavy heart,” citing a lack of federal and state funding for special education and low enrollment as the cause of the closing. In an interview with Suburban Life in March, Schack
Nathan Lurz - nlurz@shawmedia.com
Joseph Academy, a school for children with severe emotional, behavioral or learning problems, closed its DuPage County location Monday. said the program hoped to have 18 to 20 students attend the school annually but only served eight a year ago. The academy began falling behind on its bills, owing nearly $12,000 in rent to its land-
lord, DuPage County, until the board voted to waive the backlog and allow the program to operate rent-free through the end of September. “The DuPage Board has been most understanding
and helpful through excellent maintenance and rental reductions during these years,” Schack wrote. “Joseph Academy was blessed with such a solid landlord. We are very grateful for the chance you
provided and stand ready to serve in any capacity should a future need arise for an educational program in the facility.” Schack also stated the school submitted a grant proposal to Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget manager for the addition of a boarding school component, but receiving the grant appeared “a remote possibility.” The academy’s final day of occupation was Sept. 1. Cronin announced the closure publicly at the County Board meeting Aug. 26. “This school year, Joseph Academy locations across Chicagoland graduated 43 students,” he said. “The teachers and staff helped turn around the lives of those young people and their families. We believe in their devotion to serving this unique population of students with special education needs. We wish them well indeed, as they continue to operate Joseph Academy in other locations throughout the region.” The school also has sites in Des Plaines, Hometown and Melrose Park. County spokesperson Johnna Kelly said the children in the program were offered alternative placements and the county is looking at filling the vacancy left by the academy internally.

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste
a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and
pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines
ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Sznajder brothers push Benet past DGS By PAUL D. BOWKER msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – The game really began in the Sznajder family backyard years ago. Jack would throw a football to his older brother Brad. He’d catch it, and the game was on. One day, they hoped, they’d be doing it in a real stadium wearing real football jerseys. That is precisely what happened Friday in Benet’s season-opening 26-16 win against Downers Grove South at Benedictine University. Brad, a se-
nior, rushed for three touchdowns and 127 yards on the same night Jack, a sophomore, started his first varsity game. “It’s probably the coolest game of my life, I’d say, so far,” Brad said. “It was just awesome for me, for Jack, for my family to have this experience. That’s great.” Brad ran for touchdowns of six and seven yards in the first half as Benet grabbed an early 19-0 lead in the first half. He added a 34-yard score in the fourth quarter. Jack completed his first
five passes and ran for 32 yards on his first offensive play. He wound up completing 9-of-18 passes for 83 yards. “As a sophomore, he’s just going to get better and better,” Benet coach Pat New said of Jack. “I expected him to make a couple of mistakes because you’re a sophomore and that‘s what happens. He rose to the challenge. He’s a great competitor. I have total faith that he’ll just improve throughout the year.” The game was halted for more than an hour in the sec-
ond quarter because of lightning, and it was after the storm had passed that Downers Grove South came alive. Ryan Taylor scored on the Mustangs’ first possession of the second half, finishing off a 63-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. A 30-yard fumble return by Eric Denby for a score and a 36-yard field goal by Riley Heavey, all in the third quarter, closed Benet’s lead to 19-16. But even with two interceptions and a touchdown-saving tackle by Denby in the fourth
quarter, the Mustangs weren’t able to score again. Jacob Baker, a senior, made his debut at tailback and rushed for 71 yards. “Jacob ran hard,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “It was his first night at tailback. We saw some good things. We’d like to see him do a few more things, but that will come with some experience. We’re asking a kid who was a quarterback and a tight end last year to play tailback. We like him. We’re going to stick with him.”

debut at quarterback, Jack Sznajder will lead Benet on a 274-mile road trip to O’Fallon for game No. 2. The Panthers topped Cahokia 16-0 in Week 1.

Benet, Bolingbrook, Lisle set sights on state trips By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The first serve has gone up on the girls volleyball season, and teams across the state will eventually be vying for berths in the state finals Nov. 14 and 15 at Redbird Arena in Normal. Here’s the outlook for Benet, Bolingbrook and Lisle:

graduated six starters from a team that made it to the state quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. Those kinds of losses might mean a rebuilding year for most programs, but Benet is not like most programs. The squad enters the season with six players who saw plenty of action last year. Rachael Fara, last year’s kills leader, is back and is committed to play in college at Northwestern. Other players with college offers include Natalie Canulli (Penn State), Meghan Weber (Wright State) and Tiffany Clark (Michigan, second in digs last season), who plays libero in club but will switch to outside hitter for the Redwings. Sara Neilson, Maria Cyvas and Dana Griffin return after playing extensively last year. A tough tournament schedule awaits the Redwings, but some of the stiffest competition may come in practice as players like Lauren Berto, Paige Hembrough, Lina Lietuvninkas, Lilly Johnson and Gretchen Rudel will be battling for varsity playing time. “We have a very deep team with lots of girls that will be pushing each other,” head coach Brad Baker said. “This

While it was a solid showing Friday, Parpet and the Lions will be looking to sure some things up before Friday’s home opener against Aurora Central Catholic. “It was a typical first game. We rushed for over 200 yards and passed for about 100, but I thought we could have been a little sharper,” Parpet said. “But we did what we had to do. We made plays when we had to, and we got better as the game went on. “Now we play ACC, and they are a big, strong team. We are going to have our hands full.”

PEOTONE – The very early moments of Paul Parpet’s tenure as Lisle football coach didn’t go exactly as planned. Host Peotone scored on its first three plays from scrimmage to put the Lions on their heels. But Lisle remained resilient and battled back for a 3321 win Friday night. It was the first season-opening win for the Lions since a 42-0 victory against Seneca in 2005. “We took a punch, but we never panicked,” Parpet said. “Our defensive coach Ron Jaegle did a good job getting the
