LEMONT – The Lemont High School District 210 and Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A boards of education each approved a tentative 2014 tax levy during their respective meetings this week.

District 210 is requesting a $19.0005 million levy, which would be a 8.5 percent increase from 2013.

District 113A is requesting a $19.75 million levy, which would be a 7.03 percent increase from 2013.

Any taxing body that proposes increasing a tax levy by

The Property Tax Extension Limitation Law restricts the increase in tax levies each year to the increase in the CPI or 5 percent, whichever is lower.

The estimated CPI is a 1.5 percent increase from the previous year.

Because the amount of newly taxable properties will not be known until after the taxing bodies are required to submit their proposed tax levies to Cook County, some taxing bodies will ask for a levy that is more than they expect to receive to make sure they collect taxes from all the new properties.

Cook County will not issue a larger tax levy than the taxing body requests, and if the taxing body does not collect taxes from the new property in the first year, it loses the ability to tax that property in the future.

Whether property owners’ taxes go up will depend on the Equalized Assessed Value of their properties. A lower EAV typically makes the tax rate go up, but properties whose values decreased the least will see the largest increase in taxes.

“It was amazing,” she said.

“I was so happy I thought I was going to cry.”

The experience made her more certain that she wanted to be a pilot, she said.

Krzystyniak said when she tells people she wants to go into aviation, many assume she means she wants to be a flight attendant.

While she said flight attendant are important as the eyes and ears of what is going on in the plane, it is not a career she wants.

“I would be disappointed in myself if that was what I was going into because it would mean I would be giving up on my dreams,” she said.

She said she will have a better chance to pursue an aviation career in the U.S. because the field is male dominated in Poland.

Still, she realizes she will be in the minority among those training to become pilots.

“The field is going to be good to get in, especially for girls because there’s not a lot of ladies in aviation,” she said.

LEMONT – Several Lemont High School students participated in an American Airlines Career Day on Oct. 25 at Southern Illinois University.

But one student, senior Patrycja Krzystyniak, got a particularly hands-on experience.

By winning an essay contest on why she wanted to be a pilot, she was able to view the cockpit on the flight down to Carbondale and fly a Cessna during a tour of the campus.

Krzystyniak, whose family moved to the U.S. two years ago, said she became interested in aviation from watching a documentary on the Wright Brothers while living in Poland.

“At first, I thought I might want to design the planes,” she said. “I figured out I wanted to fly them.”

She said while she likes the idea of traveling around the world, it is the freedom of flying that excites her the most.

Krzystyniak said she did not know she had won the essay contest until she arrived at the airport and was told she would be sitting in first class.

She took advantage of the opportunity by talking to the aviation veterans sitting with her.

After arriving at Southern Illinois University, she said she was equally surprised to learn they would be touring the campus by airplane – and she would have a turn flying the plane.

She said although she had read books on flying, this was

LEMONT – A man was found dead Saturday morning in downtown Lemont after apparently being struck by a train.

Nicholas Cialoni, 23, of Crest Hill was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:22 a.m.

Saturday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office.

The office said the cause of death was multiple injuries from a train striking a pedestrian, with alcohol intoxication being the secondary cause. The death was ruled

The Lemont Park District Board of Commissioners voted to leave Tri County SRA and join SEASPAR during its October meeting.

The Park District said it decided to make the change because SEASPAR offers more program opportunities.

Friend said SEASPAR also sees the partnership as a way to expand its resources, with facilities such as the CORE standing out for them.

Many Lemont residents involved with the Tri County SRA are upset by the change, saying it will take their children away from the people and programs they are comfortable with and place them in a larger system with less individual attention.

Friend said she knows Lemont residents are concerned about the size of SEASPAR

LEMONT – The Lemont Park District Board of Commissioners swore in Bill McAdam to fill a seat vacated by former board president Pat Sexton during the Tuesday board meeting.

McAdam currently serves as the executive director of the Downers Grove Park District and has more than 25 years of experience as a parks and recreation professional.

The seat will be open as a twoyear term during the spring 2015 election, along with two open six-year positions.

Details on the Argonne supercomputer will be announced later, according to the Energy Department.

Foster said the price tag on the Argonne supercomputer should be comparable with those at the other two national laboratories. But, “the specifications for the Argonne machine have not been completed,” he said.

The Argonne, Oak Ridge and Livermore national laboratories are part of a consortium that goes by the acronym CORAL. It was created early this year, according to the news release from the energy department, “to leverage supercomputing investments, streamline procurement processes and reduce costs to develop supercomputers that will be five to seven times more powerful than today’s U.S. fastest systems when fully deployed.”

Argonne National Laboratory is slated to get a faster supercomputer.

Government officials announced Friday that Argonne, located near Lemont and Woodridge, is one of three national laboratories that will get supercomputers.

The new technology will “put the nation on a fast-track to next generation exascale computing, which will help to advance U.S. leadership in scientific research and promote America’s economic and national security,” according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Argonne already is home to the fifth fastest supercomputer in the world, said U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, R-Naperville, whose district includes part of the Argonne site.

The new supercomputer will be 10 to 15 times faster than MIRA, the supercomputer now at Argonne, Foster said. The supercomputer

should arrive sometime in 2017, he said.

“It means that they will be able to attack a wider variety of problems and get their answers faster,” Foster said.

He said one example of research being done at Argonne that will be aided by a faster supercomputer is the development of new battery technology for use in electric cars and power grids.

“Instead of making prototype batteries of every different type of chemistry, they’re able to investigate them on the computer,” Foster said.

Argonne National Laboratory is split between Foster’s district and that of U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs.

Lipinski issued a statement saying in part, “We’re fortunate in Illinois to have two of the fastest supercomputers in the world in MIRA at Argonne and Blue Waters at the University of Illinois.”

The CORE will be offering a Thanksgiving Day Food Drive and Open House from 7 a.m. to noon Thursday. Just bring in a nonperishable food item and you’ll get to experience The CORE for free. All proceeds will benefit the Lemont Food Pantry.

The district continues to receive so much positive feedback from residents and area visitors regarding The CORE. I am so pleased the facility has been able to bring so much to this community. I wish Lemont a very happy holiday season and I hope to see you all at The CORE!

Sticking with the theme of giving back, the Salvation Army is recruiting volunteers to collect donations outside of local stores Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 28 to Dec. 20. I live in Lemont and I was visiting the Lemon Tree around noon Nov. 14. I noticed the vehicle parked a couple of spaces away from my vehicle was a Lemont Police officer’s vehicle. There were several other vehicles there from the police department, but this first vehicle had a plate of 2662. I went in, ordered and I sat down. I noticed the vehicle was there for all of the period of time that I was there.

I left and it was still running and there was nobody in it. The vehicle kept on running. To me that’s not saving any money for the village of Lemont.

by Wilco Nonesuch Records will release two new Wilco collections Nov. 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary. The first, “Alpha Mike Foxtrot,” is a four-CD/four-LP digital box set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives. The second, “What’s Your 20,” is a two-CD digital compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings.

“Christmas at Downton Abbey” The hit television series is making a play for the music charts with a 45-track double CD featuring a festive version of the show’s theme song in addition to traditional hymns and carols. Artists featured include “Downton” actors Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Julian Ovenden, who sings five songs. Available Nov. 10.

“Bruce Springsteen: The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984” by Bruce Springsteen A boxed set comprised of remastered editions of the first seven albums recorded and released by Springsteen for Columbia Records between 1973 and 1984.

All of the albums are newly remastered (five for the first time ever on CD), and all seven are making their remastered debut on vinyl. The seven albums are in re-creations of their original packaging, and the set is accompanied by a 60-page book featuring rarely-seen photos, memorabilia and original press clippings from Springsteen’s first decade as a recording artist.

Serve simple two-ingredient appetizers or even storebought options to minimize prep time.

There seem to be two camps around Christmastime — those who adore eggnog and those who abhor it.

Naturally, we find ourselves on the side of adoration, but with all those soupy, sickeningly sweet variations available on marketplace shelves, we can see the haters’ point.

That’s not eggnog. Real eggnog is rich, velvety and frothed to perfection.

So this year, brew your ‘nog from home and don’t cut corners with cheap brandies or rum. Think of it this way — if you won’t drink it straight, it’ll probably spoil your concoction.

Also keep in mind that spicy eggnog flavorings can easily go beyond the mug.

Integrate leftovers into our cleverly delicious Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake.

Holiday Eggnog Yields 7 cups • 6 whole eggs • 2 egg yolks • 1 cup granulated sugar • 4 t sea salt • 3 cups whole milk • 1 T vanilla extract • 1 to 2 cup bourbon whiskey • 1 to 2 t freshly ground nutmeg • 1 cup heavy cream • 4 cup vanilla sugar (or plain granulated sugar) Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a heavy-bottom sauce pot. Whisk until smooth, then stir in milk.

Cook and stir over low heat until custard is cooked to about 165F, or until thick

enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake Remove from heat and add vanilla extract, Yields 16 servings bourbon and nutmeg. Cool completely.

• 1 (18-ounce) boxed spice cake mix To finish, whisk cream and vanilla sugar • 1 (4-serving) instant vanilla or in a mixing bowl until cream reaches stif cheesecake pudding and pie mix peaks. Fold cream into chilled custard. Pour • 1 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt into serving glasses and finish with a pinch • cup canola oil 4 of nutmeg and drizzle of bourbon (optional).

Preheat oven to 350F. Coat a nonstick Bundt pan with cooking spray.

Combine cake mix, pudding mix, yogurt, oil, eggnog, egg and egg whites in a large bowl. Mix until creamy.

Stir in pecans. Pour into prepared pan.

My friend’s only regret about her skillet was she couldn’t finish it. The crispy breakfast potatoes with warm soft centers were just too filling.

The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco.

While I liked the red salsa, my

personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde.

The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.

We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m.

The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices.

The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space.

We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks.

My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs.

Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette.

I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option.

We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side.

As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day.

My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

Indians one victory away from 6A state final berth

msleditorial@shawmedia.com The state semifinals isn’t a new occurrence for the Lemont football team or first-year head coach Bret Kooi.

As the Indians await their road matchup with fellow unbeaten Peoria Notre Dame on Saturday, they have now reached the semifinals for the fifth time in the past eight seasons.

Kooi also reached this point three times during his tenure at Lockport, two of which resulted in state championships.

Lemont advanced to this Class 6A showdown between high-powered offenses after hanging on for a 19-13 quarterfinal win against Richards Saturday.

The first 47 minutes of the quarterfinal belonged to the Indians. The last one was all Richards, until, with the final horn sounding, Lemont’s Flynn Nagel slapped away the potential game-tying touchdown pass headed toward Richards’ Romello Boykin in the end zone.

The Indians led 19-0 at Korhonen Field before a pair of touchdown passes by Hasan Muhammad-Rogers in the final minute, wiping out the shutout.

Richards recovered an onside kick to set up the second touchdown, then recovered another with 3.4 seconds left on the Lemont 44 for the final play. And, until Nagel’s leap and swat, it looked like it might work.

“When we came out here, something clicked,” said linebacker Hunter LaDuke, who

The girls volleyball season wrapped up on Saturday with all four classes

finishing up at Redbird Arena in Normal. That means it’s time to honor

Message from the Mayor On behalf of the Village Board and staff, we wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. As we prepare for our feast, keep in mind the need for food pantry items and grab a few extra non-perishable goods to donate. In addition, food items are greatly needed and appreciated for the annual “The Day That Turkeys Fly.” This event takes place on November 25 at the Lemont Safety Village. November is also Winter Weather Preparedness Month which is most fitting considering the number of days we have already seen snow fall and have experienced very cold temperatures. The Lemont Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) coordinates efforts of the Village and Township to prepare and respond to emergency situations, as well as to protect the general welfare and safety of the public. They remind residents to do their part in preparing for winter weather. According to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), during the 2013-14 winter, Chicago experienced the coldest December through May in its history, and 28 people died from exposure to extreme cold; the most in over 25 years. Illinois experienced more than twice the normal winter snowfall; nearly 80 inches in northeast Illinois; an amount our Public Works Department can certainly attest to. There has not been a winter in Illinois without at least one winter storm in the past century. To help your family stay safe, the Winter Weather Preparedness Guide was developed by the IEMA and National Weather Service (NWS). As with all survival preparations, learn how to be prepared before the storm, during and after. Prepare an emergency supply kit for your home and vehicle. Winterize your home and prepare for periods of power or heat lose.

Winterize your vehicle because you will never know when you will encounter emergency road closures or winter weather. There are many online resources for winter weather preparedness. Dial-A-Ride Service Lemont Township would like to remind area residents that Dial-A-Ride Service is available throughout the entire Township boundaries. Rides are available MondayFriday, 9am-4pm, and Saturdays, 9am-1pm. One way fares are $2/adults; $1/ seniors/handicap; $1/students (8-18); children under 7 are fee. Riders 18 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Monday and Saturdays are free fare days! Reservations can be booked up to one week in advance. Call 630-2572522 Monday-Friday from 9am-4 pm to schedule a ride.

Community Cafe Lemont Cafe is a senior lunch and social program run by the Community Nutrition Network (CNN), hosted by Lemont Township in the Community Center (16300 Alba St. - behind Pepper’s Auto at 127th & Timberline Dr.). The Lemont Cafe is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-2pm, lunch is served at 11:30. Lunch costs are $3.00 for the hot meal and $3.50 for the salad bar. Bingo is offered after lunch on every Monday & Wednesday, and some Friday’s. Amazingly fun Holiday parties are also hosted for our senior friends throughout the year.
