With all precincts reporting for the U.S. Representative 3rd District, Lipinski received 58 percent of the votes.

NEWS BRIEF Lemont teen found dead Saturday in Chicago LEMONT – A Lemont teen was found dead in Chicago Saturday.

Greg Koski, 18, of Lemont, was pronounced dead after being found by the Chicago Police Department at 8:15 a.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of North Dearborn Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the office, the cause of death is pending an investigation and toxicology report.

A visitation was Thursday at Markiewicz Funeral Home

in Lemont. Funeral services will be held today, starting at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. and heading to a Mass at St. Alphonsus Church, 605 State St., Lemont.

His obituary described Koski as “smart, witty and an awesome friend. His blue eyes, bright smile and his contagious laugh brightened the lives of everyone who knew him.”

Voters are cool despite hot races in Cook County

By JOE SINOPOLI jsinopoli@shawmedia.com Hotly contested races with massive amounts of money spent didn’t exactly stir the blood of voters in Cook County.

With all precincts reporting as of Wednesday, 47 percent of voters ventured out to the polls Tuesday. A total of 655,107 went out to cast votes, compared to the 1,398,724 registered voters in Cook County.

All results are considered unofficial until they are verified by the county clerk and absentee ballots are tallied.

Meanwhile, it was pretty smooth sailing at Cook County polling places Tuesday, with minimal complaints reg-

istered by voters. Greve said there wasn’t much to report in terms of problems at the polls.

“It’s actually been a pretty smooth election day,” Greve said. “We rolled out our new poll booths today. In many ways it simplified the paper process for our election judges.”

The new system appeared to be well received by voters as well.

“The vast majority were using our new poll booths today,” Greve said. There were a handful that needed a little help. But overall, a very successful day.”

LEMONT – Lemont voters approved a referendum question that will allow the Lemont Public Library to purchase bonds to pay for a $2.8 million renovation project.

With all the precincts reporting, the referendum received 56 percent of the votes.

Payments for the bonds will appear on property tax bills starting in 2016, after the bonds that paid for the original library construction are retired in 2015.

Because of lower interest rates, tax payments on the new debt service will be lower than with the current debt service.

The bonds will be paid off during a period of no more than 20 years.

LEMONT – The Lemont High School theater department will perform the classic comedy “Arsenic and Old Lace” at 7 p.m. Thursday to Nov. 15 in the Performing Arts Center, 800 Porter St. Cast members are excited to put on the dark comedy that features several wild characters.

The story stars a drama critic named Mortimer who has to deal with several bizarre relatives: two aunts who have taken to poisoning lonely old men, a murderous brother named Jonathan hiding from the law and another brother named Teddy who thinks he is President Teddy Roosevelt.

“It’s a very animated show,” said junior Marty Snarskis, who plays Mortimer. “That’s what makes it a lot of it fun, that we just get to be wild on stage.”

Junior Brian Dohse, who plays Teddy, said his family is obsessed with the film version of the show.

“When I heard we were doing ‘Arsenic and Old Lace,’ the first words I said were ‘Teddy Roosevelt’ and ‘Charge,’” he said, in reference to his character. “Then I left the room,

and they just looked at me like an idiot.”

The play will look different than normal productions of the show, being set in the 1980s instead of the 1940s.

Sophomore Justin Haase said his character, Jonathan, is dressed up in an ’80s preppy look.

“I’m supposed to be creepy, but I think we made me look like this to contradict what I’m supposed to be,” he said.

Faculty director Roy Nees said the show includes more physical comedy than the students normally do, so they have had to practice to make sure they do not get hurt.

Senior Alyssa Stecyna, who plays one of the aunts, Martha, said the dark humor is the most fun to play with.

“When you spit out a joke, it’s like, ‘Oh, ha ha,’ but when it’s dark humor you have to think about it for a little bit,” she said.

Senior Hailey Richa, who plays the other aunt, Abby, said it is always surprising to hear what the audience finds funny.

“We don’t know when they’re going to laugh,” she said. “So it’s actually having the people there actually hearing them laughing and thinking ‘Oh, I didn’t even know

taking a new test, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.

The PSAE does not track individual student growth from year to year because only juniors take it each year.

The percentage of juniors who met or exceeded on reading scores dipped slightly from 74 percent in 2013 to 72 percent in 2014, but the percentage on the math scores raised from 71 to 72 percent.

The report card also measures the number of students ready for college coursework based on whether they received a score of at least 21 on the ACT. With an average ACT score of 22.7, 68 percent of the students were determined to be ready for college coursework.

The state average is 46 percent.

“As we reviewed the variety of data that was made available with this year’s report card, we were very pleased to see that our students continue to perform at a very high level,” said District 210 Superintendent Mary Ticknor. “Our recent graduating class was among our best ever in terms of the average ACT score, and this year’s seniors continued to perform well on the PSAE.”

LEMONT – Students in Lemont School District 113A and Lemont High School District 210 continue to outperform average student standardized test scores in the state, according to the Illinois Report Cards released to the public Oct. 31.

According to the report cards, 73 percent of District 113A students met or exceeded standards on the Illinois State Achievement Test and 72 percent of District 210 met or exceeded on the Prairie State Achievement Exam.

The state average is 59 percent on the ISAT and 54 percent for the PSAE. “We utilize the report card as one measure of our school and district performance,” said District 113A Superintendent Courtney Orzel. “While it shows growth, certainly we will use the information to continuously improve performance in all aspects of what we do.”

Because Illinois was granted a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act, the report cards do not include any information about making adequate yearly progress.

For districts taking the ISAT, emphasis is put on student academic growth, measuring how students did on the ISAT this year as compared to last year.

Scores are grouped into four areas: academic warning, below standards, meets standards and exceeds standards.

Each area also is divided into a lower and higher end of the scores, making eight levels.

The report card measures student academic growth by whether each student moves up or down a level.

District 113A students showed improvements in both reading and math scores at levels that exceeded the state average.

Lemont High School is about to reach a significant milestone. In 2015, Lemont High School will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The school convened a 125th Anniversary Committee that will serve as an advisory group for all celebratory activities during the year. That committee includes representatives from many of the school’s constituencies, including COMMUNITY alumni, the Board of EduVOICE cation, current faculty and Mary staff, retirees, the Lemont Ticknor High School Alumni Association, the Lemont High School Educational Foundation, parents and current students.

This anniversary not only is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the school’s history, but also to spotlight the important role that Lemont High School has in its community today.

Lemont High School’s 125th anniversary will be celebrated from January 2015 to December 2015. The advisory committee already has been at work brainstorming a wide variety of activities that could be woven into the yearlong 125th Anniversary Celebration. There will be some special activities added to the school’s calendar throughout the year, including an opportunity to enshrine the first-ever inductees into the Lemont High School Alumni Hall of Fame. However, the committee’s goal is to infuse the 125th anniversary theme into some of the school’s most prominent annual events that already are in place, including Graduation for the Class of 2015 in May, and Homecoming Week in September 2015.

Celebrating this milestone will be a school-wide event. All of our extracurricular clubs and organizations and athletic teams will be encouraged to incorporate the 125th anniversary into their activities. For instance, our yearbook staff already has adopted the school’s 125th anniversary as its theme this year, and our Junior Achievement organization soon will be selling a 2015 calendar that highlights the anniversary.

Community members who are interested in getting involved with the 125th Anniversary Celebration – either to provide valuable input or to serve on a subcommittee – should contact Tony Hamilton, the district’s Director of School and Community Relations and the 125th Anniversary Committee Chair. Wild Monk elevates gastropub offerings LA GRANGE – When eating out, it is a rare find that strikes the perfect balance between upscale cuisine and casual comfort, but downtown La Grange gastropub Wild Monk does just that.

I recently ventured to the restaurant and bar for dinner on a Friday evening. The dining room, which remained full throughout the night, is minimalist, yet cozy, with a wood floor and booths, metal stools and exposed-bulb light fixtures. Televisions lined the walls, playing baseball and basketball, so no one was missing the game.

We took our time placing our drink orders, perusing the expansive menu, which includes over 30 draft beers and even more bottled brews, as well as an array of signature cocktails and select wines, whiskeys, bourbons and Scotches.

Among the featured breweries are west suburban favorites BuckleDown Brewing of Lyons, Pollyanna Brewing Co. of Lemont, and Two Brothers Brewing Co. of Warrenville.

I opted for a seasonal beer with the Ten Ninety Brewing Co.’s De Ogen pumpkin ale, which was robust, spicy and aromatic. My companion went with BuckleDown’s Amarillo Clencher, which he found to be appealingly hoppy, citrusy and sweet.

We began the meal by sharing one of several available small plates. Wild Monk offers a range of interesting options, including several types of sliders. But from the moment my companion spotted them on the menu, it had to be Brussels sprouts.

Now, Brussels sprouts long have been a source of contention for the two of us – he loves them, I hate them. But at Wild Monk, we shared a rare moment of consensus on the controversial veggie.

They were delicious. Tossed in bacon jam, lemon and sea salt, they were savory, sweet and just sprouty enough.

It was creamy and hearty – the kind of sandwich you could happily eat as a latenight snack or for breakfast the next morning. A side of Cajun fries added a seasoned

kick to the plate.

For his entree, my dining companion selected the fried chicken tacos with spicy slaw, micro cilantro and chipotle aioli, which he described as light, moist and flavorful. As his side order, the plantain chips were fresh and hot, with a satisfying crunch.

Before we departed, he tried one more enticing draft beer – Pollyanna’s Dr. Pan-

gloss, which somehow pulls off the delightfully bizarre combination of being both hoppy and malty.

If you are a beer snob, Wild Monk will no doubt rise to your standards. If you aren’t a beer snob, fear not – Wild Monk may know beer, but it also knows how to create an environment everyone can enjoy.

“Some teams might have taken a step back after something like that, but not these guys,” Kooi said. “They all have a little chip to them. It’s a positive thing, but if it’s not controlled it can be a negative thing. Our kids have grown and showed that they feed off of stuff like that.”

Nagel left the game briefly only to return three plays later to catch a 12-yard touchdown pass from Dawson and extend the Lemont lead to 21-0 with 1:53 left in the third quarter.

“It felt awesome to get back into the game and help the team out,” Nagel said. “I’m thankful and blessed that I was able to get back into the Lorae Mundt - For Shaw Media game.”

LEMONT – Lemont senior receiver Flynn Nagel made sure the Indians didn’t take anything for granted as he caught seven passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns to lead top-seed Lemont over visiting Thornton 28-0 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs Saturday night.

The Indians defense also stepped up their game as they held the Wildcats to a mere 197 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Ryan Dawson went 10-of-24 for 161 yards and two touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, while Anthony Martin totaled 22 carries for 66 yards and Ryan Fejedelem broke free for a 60yard touchdown run.

The game was marred by three separate player ejections for Thornton. The first occurred late in the third quarter when Nagel was hit while making a fair catch on a punt return.

“It wasn’t the cleanest game, but we kept it clean,” Nagel said. “We got the ‘W’ and that is all that matters.”

Lemont (10-0) came into the game averaging a little more than 45 points a game while allowing more than 10 points a game only four times.

The Indians needed just 39 seconds to get on the scoreboard, as Fejedelem broke through the Wildcats defense for a 60-yard touchdown run that gave Lemont an early 7-0 lead.

Dawson then connected with Nagel on a 33-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-0 as time expired in the first quarter.

“We have other kids [who are also] weapons but I’m not sure if you’re ever going to be able to take him [Nagel] out of a game,” Lemont coach Bret Kooi said. “He’s just that talented, but I know that people are going to try.”

worse than that as Michigan prepared to visit Northwestern. Michigan had dropped eight of its past 12 Big Ten games, a streak matched only once in the past six decades by their 4-8 Big Ten record under Rodriguez in his final two seasons.

Things have gotten so bad in Ann Arbor that Athletic Director David Brandon was forced to resign just 10 days before the Northwestern game, and Hoke is considered a real long shot to return for another season.

While the expectations for the Northwestern football program are nowhere near those of Michigan, that Gator Bowl victory was supposed to signal a new era for the Wildcats, the first of many bowl victories to come and the possibility of someday even playing in a Big

Ten title game.

Northwestern followed its 2012 breakout campaign with a 5-7 record in 2013, which included a 1-7 record in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are 3-5 this season, including 2-3 in the Big Ten following a 2-0 start to the campaign that included a 20-14 upset over 17th-ranked Wisconsin.

While Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s job is in nowhere near the jeopardy of Hoke’s – the advantage I guess of Northwestern football’s less lofty expectations – to say his star has fallen a bit is an understatement.

Just a season ago, Fitzgerald was one of the hottest names in college football coaching circles, rumored for the Texas job and almost every other major program gig that opened up.

Ironically, Fitzgerald was heavily rumored for the Michigan job before both the Rodriguez and Hoke hirings.

He was reportedly within a whisker of taking the Michigan job before Hoke was hired, when Northwestern stepped up with one of those “lifetime” coaching contracts every college coach covets.

Not coincidentally, I am a Michigan alumnus, and our senior Bears beat reporter, Kevin Fishbain, studied at

Northwestern. Neither of us are very happy these days, but we are forever loyal.

And therein lies the beauty of both the college and high school games, with one of the very few football assets the NFL cannot match.

These two Big Ten programs will be back. There is glory in their futures. How soon I cannot say, but it will happen, and the alumni will always be there when it does.

They are a significant part of their alumni’s lives, as are the teams of the high schools we attended and played on.

Your favorite NFL team is an attachment, at times inseparable or so it seems, but at the end of the day, they are a choice.

The schools you gave four or more years of your lives to, they and their teams are a part of who you are, the highs are that much higher and the lows that much more depressing.

Both Northwestern and Michigan alumni deserve better than what they’ve been given lately. Hopefully, the outcome of Saturday’s game is the beginning of something really good for one side or the other.

For the Wildcats, it was just two years ago that the one-time doormat of the Big Ten put together a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten, 10-3 overall, and won its first bowl game in 64 years and just the second in its history.

Until Jan. 1, 2013, Northwestern’s only victory in a bowl game was in the 1949 Rose Bowl, a defeat of California.

Sixty-four years later to the day, the Wildcats knocked off Mississippi State 34-0 in the Gator Bowl. Yes, the same Mississippi State that was ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in its history at 8-0 as I pen this column.

Ah, but the winds of change can blow swiftly and cruelly as they have on these two programs in recent seasons.

Since Hoke’s first year at Michigan, his Wolverines have gone just 19-16 in the past two-plus seasons and a once unthinkable 11-10 in the Big Ten. Actually, things were

With the Cubs’ hiring of Joe Maddon dominating the sports pages, Bears-Packers week in the NFL and the IHSA state football championships moving into the second round, the biggest story in college football in Chicago was the once-mighty Michigan Wolverines visiting the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday.

Just a couple of seasons ago, this matchup would have signaled a unique opportunity for the up-and-coming Wildcats to make a statement against one of the most powerful college football programs in the country.

But on Saturday, it was a clash between two programs heading in the same direction, most definitely the wrong direction.

Everyone who loves the game knows about Michigan football, the winningest program in the history of college football.

As recently as three seasons ago, the Wolverines were 6-2 in the Big Ten, 11 -2 overall and playing in a BCS bowl game under first-year Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, a “Michigan man” tabbed to come in and clean up the disappointment of the three-year reign of Rich Rodriguez, “the outsider” and controversial

Message from the Mayor November is the start of the busiest time of year for volunteer opportunities. There are many ways to help those in our Village that are experiencing hardships. Any contribution or time you can give to support these local needs is most appreciated.

Lemont Food Pantries Donations are always needed. Drop-of bins are located at Chipain’s, Lemont Police Station Lobby, Lemont Township Oice, Pawz & Klawz Pet Salon on Talcott, Starbucks and US Bank.

Family Assistance Fund Donations to the Lemont Township Family Assistance Fund to help provide the inances needed for much needed food vouchers and emergency assistance can be sent or dropped of year round to the Lemont Township Oice, 1115 Warner Ave. Giving Tree Program Through the Giving Tree, gift wishes from children 18 and under to our most inancially strained homes, are fulilled.

These Christmas Wish Ornaments will be available on November 21 with a return date for gifts on December 5. The ornaments will be located on the giving trees at the Lemont Park District Building, CORE Facility and via request to Terri, at terri-oneill@lemonttownship.org or call 630-257-2522 X13.

The Day That Turkeys Fly A gift of a turkey to prepare along with the ixings are presented to those struggling inancially, physically and/or emotionally.
