SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education approved Johnny Billingsley as the next principal of Old Quarry Middle School during a Wednesday meeting. Billingsley, who currently is the principal of George Washington Middle School in Lyons, will start July 1, taking over for the departing Bill Caron. “I am looking forward to making positive contributions to the school and community and look forward to meeting the students, faculty and parents,” he stated in a district news release. “Old Quarry Middle School is a highly successful institution, and I am honored and thankful for the opportunity to serve as the leader of such a high achieving middle school.” According to the release, Billingsley has a master’s degree in curriculum from Olivet Nazarene University and a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix. He previously held the positions of assistant principal and principal for Bloom School District 206 and Harnett and Wake County school districts

LEMONT – It was a close shave for Lemont firefighters, police officers and their families Saturday at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, but it was worth it for the cause. Teams from the Lemont Fire Protection District and Lemont Police Department participated in a head shaving event to benefit pediatric cancer research with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Ultimately, the Lemont firefighters’ Team Rockstar raised $9,987 among its 22 members and the six-member Lemont police team raised $2,585. In turn, team members – young and old, male and female – had their heads shaved or their hair cut short. The teams dedicated their efforts in memory of Macy Ganz, the daughter of firefighter Chris Ganz who died in 2010 after going through treatment for clear cell sarcoma of the kidney and leukemia.

New Lemont studio puts the art in party By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont artists have a new painting destination downtown. The newly opened L’Arte e Vita Studio, 115 Stephen St., offers bring your own beverage painting parties for adults and children’s parties, while also displaying local artists’ works. The studio can host private parties but also holds public events for adults at 6:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and for families at noon Sundays. There are plans for more public events such as art classes and summer camps for children down the line. Jennifer Paul of Brookfield and Jade Romo of Orland Park own the studio. Paul is the artist, while Romo runs the office. “It’s been my dream to open one of these for the last eight years, since I was in college,” Paul said. Paul has a degree in studio arts with a focus on painting and teaches art at the Wellness House in Hinsdale. Art parties at the studio vary in length, depending on the age of the participants, but the concept remains
All parties end with a half hour of drying time, when participants can finish up the refreshments. Paul said even people who do not consider themselves painters enjoy the parties because they realize they can paint better than they thought. “I get a lot of ‘I can’t draw a stick figure,’” she said. “Then they come out with one of the best paintings in the whole class.” Paul said the space in downtown Lemont was just what she and Romo were looking for. “Lemont’s a nice little town, and it’s central to pretty much everything,” she said. “Nobody has to drive too far. The interstate’s not far away. You have a train in the morning and the afternoon.” The studio opened March 20 and will hold a grand opening at 6:30 p.m. April 24. LEMONT – The village of Lemont has filed an objection with the Cook County Zoning Board of Appeals over a potential business owner’s application for special use to allow a fashion boutique to be opened at 12697 S. Archer Ave. The village said the business would not comply with the village’s comprehensive plan because it would be located in a residential district. The plan also recommends all future commercial developments be concentrated at major intersections. The property is located in unincorporated Cook County, but is adjacent to the village. Village officials said it is subject to the comprehensive plan because it is within 1.5 miles of village boundaries. The Lemont Village Board approved the objection during its Monday meeting in order to allow the village to present its objection during a zoning board hearing Wednesday at the board’s office in Chicago. According to the application, the boutique would include a showroom, photography studio, coffee shop, office space, lounge area and sleep area for employees. The application was submitted by Eduardo and Rosalinda Reyes, accord-

Board discusses capital improvement program During Monday’s meeting, the board also approved the fiscal year 2016 capital improvement program. The budget estimates the various projects will cost $4.579 million, with the actual cost determined after the village goes out to bid on the projects. Because of uncertainty about municipal funding from the state, the village has suspended road reconstruction program for this fiscal year and will re-evaluate whether to continue the projects after the state budget has been passed this summer. The largest capital improvement expenses are expected to be for water and sewer projects, including $1.997 million for a Bell Road utility extension and $1.05 million for water main replacements.

Emergency Budget Act may just be the first step It is a historic week in the state Capitol. If all goes according to plan, Illinois will have a balanced budget for the first time in 12 years. And Gov. Bruce Rauner can take tremendous pride in passing his first test in working with the Democrat-controlled General Assembly. Bringing Republicans and COMMUNITY Democrats together to fix VOICE the broken state budget left Christine behind by Pat Quinn and the Radogno one-party controlled state government is a monumental step toward putting Illinois on the right path. Republicans opposed the Quinn budget when it passed last year. It was dishonest and didn’t balance. The Democrat majority publicly acknowledged the $1.6 billion budget shortfall they created. Specific programs in critical areas were deliberately under funded, leading to a crisis. Three months remain in the fiscal year, yet state prisons, childcare facilities and other state programs are out of funding and struggling to keep the doors open. Gov. Rauner and Republican legislators stepped forward to help clean up the mess, pushing to give the governor greater flexibility to prioritize spending and shift funds. Politics blocked our effort for weeks. However, with Gov. Rauner’s consistent leadership, a bipartisan, bicameral solution was negotiated this week. As I write this Wednesday, the House of Representatives has approved the legislation. The Senate vote will come within hours. I am optimistic we will be successful in implementing the emergency budget solution. It will set the foundation for development of the state’s next budget. The state must live within its means. For more than a decade, Democrats have chosen the easy way out with unbalanced budgets filled with false promises, financial gimmicks and tax increases. Instead – with Gov. Rauner at the helm – we have the opportunity to restructure state government spending, eliminate waste and abuse in the system and create a more stable economic environment that fosters growth and opportunity. We have the chance to implement reforms that truly change our state’s trajectory. It will not be without some pain and sacrifice. But with the same potential bipartisan cooperation we see in the state Capitol this week, we can make great strides. On your behalf, I’m committed to work collaboratively with Gov. Rauner, my Republican colleagues and Democrat lawmakers to develop solutions that restore fiscal stability, integrity and accountability in Illinois.
Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, is the Illinois Senate Republican Leader. Laura Burke, general manager lburke@shawmedia.com 630-427-6213

OUR VIEW
Your vote has never been easier or more powerful If you’re one of those people who gets annoyed every election cycle at the admonishments to go out and vote because you don’t care, you’re never going to vote and you don’t see why everyone keeps harping on it, then fear not – this message is not for you. This message is for the people who vote sometimes, or the people who know they should vote but can’t seem to get around to it. This is for the people who are most likely to vote when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race at the top of the ticket. This is for the people who’d vote if it was an app on their smartphones but don’t want to go to the trouble of seeking out a polling place. If you fit into any of those categories, then you need to vote between now and April 7 because this is the election where your vote matters most. (Early voting concludes April 4, and the 7th is Election Day, so don’t try to vote on the 5th or 6th). Municipal elections combine small constituencies with extremely low turnout, meaning races for positions that control tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of tax dollars often turn on a few hundred votes … or a few dozen votes … sometimes even one vote. Sometimes, even, a coin flip. For in-
stance, in 2013, a Stickney Village Board trustee was chosen by a coin flip because the candidates tied with 573 votes apiece. In the 2012 presidential election, on the other hand, more than 129 million votes were cast. So you can see where being one vote out of 1,146 can have a much bigger impact. If you’re not happy with your local schools, or local services, or the park district, or the library in your town, check and see if there’s anyone up for election on one of those boards. For the higher profile races, we’ve got questions and responses from the candidates about their positions online at www.mysuburbanlife. com/election-central. You can find the full ballot at the County Clerk’s website. If the importance of your vote isn’t enough to convince you, consider that it’s easier than ever to vote. Sure, a smartphone app would be great (if potentially insecure), but thanks to early voting, you don’t necessarily need to stand in long lines. Pick an off-peak day and time during the early voting period and you might be able to walk in and cast your ballot without any wait at all. Then you can sit back and watch everyone else hyperventilate knowing you’ve already done your civic duty.

I can’t believe in this day and age a guy is actually running for the mayor of Downers Grove on a platform of less transparency and less public input. Obviously he hasn’t been paying attention.
Yes, in the village of Downers Grove, I think someone should look into why so many, and I’m talking well over 80 people, are earning more then $100,000. They can’t all possibly be department heads with master’s degrees. This is clearly a whole lot more money than the general public makes and I think someone should research it, especially during these times when there’s so many budget cuts. We need some answers.

Hello, this letter is regarding the letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans. A letter to the Ayatollah of Iran by 47 Republicans is an act of sedition unparalleled in the history of this country. It shows the extreme actions they are willing to take because of their hate for President Obama. It is shameful that this letter was written and that 47 Republicans signed it in order to undermine our president in this way. This act increases the chance of war in the Middle East, damages the diplomatic interests of our country and hurts all of us.

Park District wants feedback for renovation A short five years ago, the Lemont Park District was in the process of closing out the remaining items of building The CORE Fitness & Aquatic Complex. That was my first few months here at the Park District, and what an exciting time. In collaboration with the maintenance staff, we are continuously making improvements to our parks, facilities and overall work processes on a daily basis. As a team, we collectively focus on adhering to the district’s mission: “To enhance the quality of individual experiences, providing safe, accessible and premium facilities, parks, and programs to the community while being fiscally and environmentally responsible.” Many facility projects have been completed within the past five years, such as adding a fire suppression system to the Centennial Community Center in line with the Park District’s VALUES, which highlights Safety First. Several other projects have been completed at Centennial, including the installation of new lighting in

Another exciting update you will see when returning from spring break is a revitalized Customer Service Desk. The CORE also has seen some nice updates during the past few years such as new sinks in the locker rooms and public washrooms, a new water bottle filler in the Fitness Center, and fresh coats of paint in multiple locations. The district also really focuses on the “Park” in Park District. To assist with streamlining the agency’s park updates, in 2012 the district adopted a comprehensive Park Replacement Schedule and process. The first step was to assess the condition, use, accessibility and initial install dates of

scheduled for completion this year. The district’s next park renovation will be Northview Park located on McCarthy Road. The neighborhood meeting has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 23 at the Centennial Community Center, 16028 127th St. A banner located at the park highlights the meeting date, time and location. Postcards also have been mailed to surrounding neighbors. Because of the park’s significance and historic past, the Park District would love to expand the scope of feedback generated from the planning meeting to include the entire community of Lemont. Your input could provide that one element that will turn Northview Park into a special place to create family memories for a lifetime. We hope to see you at the April 23 meeting, and, as always, we look forward to seeing you at the parks.

the district’s playgrounds. From there, recommendations and timelines for replacements were made and placed accordingly into the Capital Improvement Plan; this also assists with longterm financial planning. During the planning year for the scheduled park replacement, the next step is to notify residents about park planning meetings through multiple media channels, such as placing a banner at the park that is scheduled for renovations, email blasts, postcards to park neighbors, press releases and many other timely communications. We have received valuable information from these meetings and encourage the community to attend if there is a meeting concerning your neighborhood park. From here, the plans of the new park take shape and a construction timetable is developed. we went with tried-and-true Italian traditions – tiramisu and cannoli. The ladyfingers in the tiramisu imparted the coffee liqueur essence without being drenched, and a chocolate drizzle added to the delicate sweet treat. The cannoli’s delectable filling was surrounded by a slightly sweet and crisp shell, while crushed pistachios and an artful flourish of chocolate syrup added to the knockout flavor. Throughout our meal, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Our plates quickly were taken away, our water glasses remained filled, and our leftovers were packaged promptly. Our server and busser always arrived at the table with a smile. DARIEN – The phrase “la notte due” roughly translates from Italian as “the second night,” but La Notte Due could easily rank a first place in the local Italian dining pantheon. My date and I arrived for an early weekend dinner recently and were promptly seated in the elegant yet comfortable dining room, where bread materialized at our table. The Darien restaurant’s modern interior is warmed by wood floors and the paintings of Italian scenery adorning the walls. White tablecloths also enhance the surroundings. Lemont girls kick off soccer season Young Indians ready to compete By SCOTT SCHMID
Lemont Indians
sschmid@shawmedia.com
Coach: Rick Prangen 2014 record: 23-2
LEMONT – Losing two players like midfielder Kim Jerantowski and goalie Kelly Fritz to graduation isn’t easy for any team to overcome. But a youthful 2015 Lemont girls soccer squad, which features eight freshmen on its roster, still has high expectations for this spring. “Losing Kim and Kelly, they are hard to replace,” said Lemont coach Rick Prangen, whose team has reached three supersectionals and two state semifinals in the past four years. “We are very young this year and that will be a challenge. We are definitely a young team in a lot of ways and the freshmen need to step up and plug some holes for us. “It’s a new experience after losing two players like that. But there are still expectations for the girls to be successful and to carry on the tradition of the program.” Part of the reason for optimism is the Indians return a crop of talented and experienced players, headlined by New Mexico recruit Aleksandra Mihailovic. Fellow senior Savannah Brija also is back after missing last season with a torn ACL and will lead a defensive group that also features juniors Ashley Mathews and Lauren Devlin. They will play in front of freshman goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski, Kim’s younger sister. “The most experience we have is on the back line,” Prangen said. “Savannah will play center back for us and we are returning two other strong defenders from last year. Hopefully that will take some pressure off Michelle.” One other freshman, forward McKenna Gardner, is ex-

pected to be in a starting role. She is part of a group that will try to help Mihailovic with the offensive load as the Indians try to replace the 28 goals from Jerantowski last spring. “It will have to be a collective whole that will make us be successful,” the coach said. “Last year, we deferred to those two players [Jerantowski and Fritz] a lot. This year it will have to be a collective effort for us.” Lemont is looking to continue its dominant run through the South Suburban Blue conference as the Indians have captured the league title several seasons in a row. The team began the season with a 2-1 nonconference victory over Downers Grove North on March 19 as Brija and Niamh Hehir scored and Mihailovic contributed an assist. Jerantowski finished with four saves. “Downers Grove North is a little young too, they graduated a lot of kids,” Prangen said. “It was two very young teams playing each other. I thought our freshmen played very well but the hard thing for freshmen is consistency. It was a good first game for us.” A stiff challenge in the form of the York tournament now awaits Lemont, with the Indians taking on Benet on March Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com 30, followed by matches with Joliet West and the host Dukes Lemont’s Carli Bermele (left) battles for the ball against Downers Grove North’s Mary Doro during an April 24, the following two days. 2014, game in Downers Grove.
