Lemont District 113A welcomes new Board of Education By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education swore in new member Damon Ascolani and said goodbye to member Mike Aurelio during its Wednesday meeting. Aurelio announced last spring would not seek re-election to the board because of plans to move out of the area. Ascolani ran in the uncontested April election race, along with incumbent board members Cindy Kelly, Al Malley and Dave Molitor. The district and the board recognized Aurelio for his four years of service on the board, which included a year as board president. “It really has been a pleasure to work with you and with your family,” Superintendent Courtney Orzel said. “Even though you are no lon-
ger a member of the board, we still have a connection.” Aurelio said the difference between where the board and district were at when he joined and where they are now was night and day. In his one term, he worked with five acting superintendents and saw the district removed from a state financial watch list. “When I came in, it was a very adversarial situation,” Aurelio said. “I think the board really rallied together the last two years.” After swearing in the new board, the board voted on its leadership for the coming year. The members all retained their leadership positions for the next year, with Kelly as president, Malley as vice president and Patrick Kerrigan as secretary. Kelly was the unanimous Dan Farnham - dfarnham@shawmedia.com choice for board president, while Malley won by a 4-2 vote Lemont School District 113A seats a new Board of Education during its Wednesday meeting. How to use video effectively for local marketing SPONSORED BY
By J.Tom Shaw Video is a powerful marketing tool for small business. Thanks to high speed Internet, YouTube and Facebook, and the rise of mobile prevalence, more videos are viewed online than ever before. In the past, using video to reach an audience was an expensive proposition for many small businesses. Production costs and pricy broadcast advertising schedules were too expensive to run with adequate frequency. Fast-forward to today, and any business with a marketing plan can incorporate video affordably and effectively. Below are a few tips for how you can use video to drive traffic and grow your business: Video is an excellent component to a business website. When a potential customer is searching your website, offer a relevant, high quality video segment. Content can include benefits of your product or service, interviews with you or your team. Best of all, testimonials from actual satisfied customers can be just as effective as word of mouth advertising. Video is an effective way to improve
Search Engine Optimization (SEO). YouTube has dominated the video view field for several years now. Owned by Google, YouTube videos receive favorable search result status in Google searches. Your business can host your videos on YouTube, and link back to your website. You can also display the video on your website using a YouTube widget. In both cases, that linking will improve your chances of getting found by people searching for your product or service. Video rocks on social media. Facebook allows videos to auto play in the news feed. Experts have noted that video can outperform organic reach over text and photo content on Facebook. Social media video for business should be friendly, fun, and informal. Show you and your employees active in the community, having fun with customers, or demonstrating some helpful tips. For examples of these and many other videos, please visit www.ShawMediaDigital. com/video.

LEMONT – After a long winter, it may seem like a lot of work to get a lawn and garden looking good for spring. Sandy Remijas, owner of Rainbow Garden Designs in Lemont, said it does not have to be with the right tools and techniques. Here are some tips she gave for maintaining lawns, decorative plants and vegetable gardens.
ting the right plant in the right spot and selecting the plant that best fits the space. She said it is possible to have a garden all year by having layers of plants that each bloom at a different time of the year. The best kinds to plant his time of year are trees and shrubs, such as crab apple trees and lilac trees. Many perennials have not bloomed yet, so she suggests waiting until they do before purchasing and planting them. One of her pet peeves is seeing a plant that is butting up against a house because the planter did not take into consideration the mature size of the plant when placing it. While many plants may seem pretty, some are not suitable for this area, she said. For instance, rhododendrons and azaleas are not suited for this soil because they like more acidic soils. After a couple of years, they will decline in health.

Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a
phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

A woodland perennial grows in Sandy Remijas’ home garden Wednesday.
• GARDEN Continued from page 5 Vegetable gardens Remijas said now is the best time to plant cool-season vegetables, including snap peas, regular peas, cabbage, onions, potatoes and spinach. She said the last frost date for the area is May 15, which means there is a 50 percent chance after that date there will be a frost that will kill warm-season plants. Remijas suggests applying a fresh layer of mulch to garden beds to prevent weeds and
conserve water. When watering vegetables, she said to water at the base of the plant instead of the leaves. She said one of the easiest and most effective ways to water the plants is through dip irrigation, where water gradually drips out of the hose. A drip line or soaker hose can be purchased to do this and can even be hooked up to a timer. “If you have this irrigation system that sets up automatically, it’s just one less thing they have to worry about and they can enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she said.

Child health safety should be a priority When moms and dads drop their babies off at day care, there must be a level of assurance that their children will be taken care of and protected from harm. Parents should not have to worry that their infant or toddler could contract a fatal disease from the day care workers who care for them. That’s why I am proposing a new law that day care workCOMMUNITY ers who care for babies and VOICE toddlers be immunized for Christine measles and other diseases Radogno that are potentially fatal to small children. The Illinois Senate overwhelmingly approved my proposal. Senate Bill 986 mandates that child care facilities in Illinois that care for children ages 6 and under require their employees to provide proof of two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, as well as proof of having received the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines (Tdap). As an alternative, those workers can provide medical proof of immunity to those harmful diseases. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause severe health complications, including fatal cases of pneumonia and encephalitis. Children under age 7 need the extra level of protection because the measles vaccination is actually a two-shot series that children do not complete until they are 6 years old. The Centers for Disease Control recommends the first dose to be administered to babies 12 to 15 months old. The second dose is usually administered between 4 to 6 years of age. Additionally, young children are also vulnerable to three other deadly diseases caused by bacteria, including diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, because it takes five doses of the DTaP vaccine to achieve full immunity. Children receive one dose at two months, four months, six months, 15 to 18 months and 4 to 6 years old. Without the full benefits of immunization, infants and toddlers are extremely susceptible to contracting the measles and other potentially fatal diseases if exposed. The Illinois Department of Public Health, whose mission is centered on “protecting health, improving lives,” supports my legislation, Senate Bill 986, which awaits further consideration in the House of Representatives. If approved there, the proposal will be presented to Gov. Bruce Rauner for final approval. Measles is one of the most preventable illnesses, and while the vast majority of our population is vaccinated, we need to ensure every precaution is taken to protect those babies and toddlers who are too young to be immunized.

The College of DuPage announced Tuesday evening President Robert Breuder is taking a medical leave of absence.
OUR VIEW
Breuder’s leave one more step in the right direction for COD It’s the result that many people wanted, but not the way most wanted it. College of DuPage President Robert Breuder’s medical leave accomplishes something that was necessary a long time ago – he’s no longer running the school. To begin the process of rebuilding the community’s trust in the institution, the man who for many symbolized all that was wrong with the current way of doing business had to go. If Breuder is in fact seriously ill, we wish him a speedy recovery. If it was simply a cynical effort to evade a likely vote Thursday that would probably put him on leave anyway ... well, then we’re simply relieved that he’s no longer in charge, however it happened. The new Board of Trustees has a lot to figure out in their first weeks. Who is going to run the school on a day-to-day basis? How should they respond to all the federal and county subpoenas flying around? How can the administration rebuild trust with the stu-

dents, faculty and community? Who will get the title of “president” when Breuder is finally, permanently out of the job? The subpoenas that have been lodged by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office aren’t proof there was any illegal activity. There have been accusations of document destruction by Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, and those accusations definitely need to be investigated thoroughly. If there was any criminal activity related to the finances of the College of DuPage Foundation, it needs to be prosecuted. We don’t know what those subpoenas will turn up, if there will be charges or if this will all just fizzle out. One thing we do know – with the new members of the board elected this month, and Breuder taking a medical leave – the ranks of leadership are changing at the school. We will all be watching to be sure the new leaders do a better job than the old.

Don’t blame the governor Why is everybody blaming the governor for all the cuts and everything? The legislature has been controlled by the Democrats for the past 30 years. … Why don’t they blame the Democratic party for spending, spending, spending? Why don’t they read the newspapers once in a while instead of blaming the governor for every bad thing that’s happening?

To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. To the individual who stated, “School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service,” your statement, “One should never need two incomes to support a family.” First of all, the vast majority of households in the U.S. are two-income households (59.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), so you are condemning most of the families in the United States. You have no right to make such a statement based on the financial needs of others. Second, many women work because they choose to work and obtain fulfillment from having both a career and a family. And who are you to judge that women cannot have both a career and a family?

GAME REPORT RED STARS VS. PORTLAND THORNS FC SAT. APRIL 25

Press Dominates Again as Chicago Draws 2-2 with Portland Forward’s brace is matched by resilient league leaders Chicago, Illinois – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Women’s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old fired at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deflect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the day’s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. The Red Stars nearly found the net at the other end in the 15th minute, rookie Danielle Colaprico swinging in a corner kick from the left that was nodded just over the frame by legendary U.S. midfielder Shannon Boxx. Three minutes later, Press thought she had a hat trick when she

was released by Chalupny and did well to release a right-footed effort that seemed destined for the back of the net until it was tipped wide by Angerer’s fingertips. Instead of celebrating a third Chicago tally, the fans at Benedictine University saw their team’s lead cut in half just before the half-hour mark. Allie Long found Sinclair at the top of the penalty box and the Canada striker hit a low shot that found its way through traffic and inside the left post for a clinic in precision goal-scoring. Portland nearly leveled the match four minutes from the break, LeBlanc rushing off her line and coming up with a stunning block to deny Sinclair’s toe-poke from close range. Thorns FC finally tied things up in the opening stages of the second period, as Shim pounced on a partial clearance by taking a touch at the edge of the box and picking out the inside of the far post with a well-placed left-footed blast. The Red Stars were fortunate not to concede another goal when Sinclair subsequently found Comeau unmarked inside the penalty area and the midfielder send a mishit effort well over the frame. The visitors got even closer to the go-ahead tally in the 74th minute, substitute Kendall Johnson feeding Sinead Farrell, whose excellent chipped attempt bounced off the underside off the crossbar and came within inches of crossing the line. Chicago defender and New Zealand captain Abby Erceg had the game’s final quality chance when she beat several defenders to ball on DiBernardo free-kick from midfield, only to see the dangerous header parried by Angerer. The Chicago Red Stars look to stay undefeated on the season when they host American legend Christie Rampone and Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 2. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.
