LEMONT – The village of Lemont is asking residents to help voice opposition to proposed state cuts in local funding by sending a letter to local legislators and Gov. Bruce Rauner through the website www.ProtectMy Town.com.

The village said cuts to the Local Government Distributive Fund in Rauner’s proposed state budget would result in a $850,000 annual loss for the village.

ProtectMyTown.com was organized by cities across the state to organize their opposition to the budget proposal.

“The legislators and the governor need to hear from their constituents on this important matter,” Lemont

Mayor Brian Reaves said in a news release. “ProtectMyTown.com is an easy way for residents to let their representatives know that they want their streets and potholes repaired and community protected. These are vital services we can’t afford to lose because the state wants to shift the burden on to local communities.”

When visiting the website, residents go through three steps to submit the letter.

First, there is a copy of the letter that can be reviewed and edited if needed.

Next, there is a form for the users to fill out his or her name and contact information.

Finally, the user will click the submit button to send the letter.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – Downtown Lemont will host the 10th annual Citgo Quarryman Challenge 10 Mile & 5K starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

A limited number of registrations may be available on race day but are not guaranteed.

Even if not participating in the race, residents are encouraged to attend and cheer on the runners.

To accommodate the race, there will be several road closures, including: • Main Street, from Julia Street west to Lockport Street, west of the State Street bridge from about 6 to 9 a.m.; Main Street, west of Stephen Street, may re-open about 9 a.m.

• Main Street from Julia to Stephen streets from 6 to 10:30 a.m.

• Lemont Street from Main Street south to Cass Street until about 9 a.m.

• Stephen Street from Illinois Street to the train tracks from about 7 to 7:45 a.m.

• The crossing of Main Street at Holmes Street throughout the race There will be a post-race party with free food at Lemont Village Hall, 418 Main St.

NEWS BRIEF Lemont Historical Society hosting nature hikes LEMONT – Nature enthusiasts can join the Lemont Area Historical Society the next two Saturdays for hikes.

Hikers will meet for the Lincoln Park Nursery and School hike at 7 a.m. Saturday in the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve parking lot on West Bluff Road off Route 83 in Darien. Guides will show where soil and land were taken to build Lincoln Park in Chicago.

The historical society will host a Heritage Quarries Trail hike at 7 a.m.

May 16, starting at the gazebo along the I&M Canal, east of downtown Lemont off Main Street.

The cost for each hike is $5 per person.

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont High School Marching Band had what may be the thrill of a lifetime when they were invited to perform with singer Jennifer Hudson during the grand finale of the We Day Illinois event April 30.

Hudson is an Academy Award winner and is known for her solo career and as a former contestant on the television show “American Idol.”

The band joined Chicago’s King High School Marching Band in backing Hudson as she performed “Whatever Makes You Happy.”

LHS outdoor education class receives bike donations

NEWS BRIEF Celtics football program plans two upcoming open houses

LEMONT – Interested parents can learn more about the St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Celtics football program during two open house events from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Lemont Park District CORE, 16050 127th St. Players may register at the open house, meet Celtics’ coaches, see the safety equipment, learn about safety techniques the team teaches and get information on the team and league.

The program is open to students in fourth through eighth grade who are enrolled in St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick or St. Cyrils schools or attend any of the three parishes’ respective religious education programs.

LEMONT – When Lemont High School physical education teacher Cindy DeLude took over the outdoor education class, she made sure to add bicycle riding to the curriculum.

“I just felt it was one part of the program that was missing,” she said.

To help with the program, she solicited and received bicycle donations from area businesses.

Neves Global Resources in Lemont bought 15 bicycles for the class.

The bikes came from Performance Bicycle in Orland Park, which will continue to do maintenance on the bikes and also gave a lesson on bike safety to students.

For students who had their own bikes, 2 Bici Bike Shop in Willow Springs gave free safety checks.

The outdoor education class is a physical education elective seniors can take during the second semester.

According to the course description, activities include wilderness first aid, a high ropes course, team building and cooperative learning skills, orienteering, camping skills, outdoor cooking, fly and bait cast fishing, basic canoeing, kayaking skills, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, outdoor biking, indoor climbing/rappelling wall expe-

DeLude said the class rides about 4 miles at the Lemont Heritage Quarries Trail.

As a Lemont resident herself, she has been riding that trail for several years.

“It’s very peaceful,” she said. “You feel like you are in Wisconsin.”

She said she has been happy to see local volunteers working to improve the area.

DeLude said the students are at the age when being able to drive is important to them, so it is nice to get them back on bikes.

It is also a chance to introduce them to local outdoor recreation opportunities, she said.

“Usually a handful of kids have been back there [in the quarry area] and are aware of if,” she said. “Surprisingly, there are a lot of kids who didn’t even know it existed.”

Mary Poppins lands on Lemont stage

School Sisters of St. Francis to host golf outing May 18 LEMONT – The School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King and Alvernia Manor Senior Living in Lemont are hosting a golf fundraiser starting at 11:30 a.m. May 18 at Cog Hill Golf Course, 12294 Archer Ave. Lunch starts at noon, followed by a shotgun start for golf at 1 p.m.

Thursday through May 16.

The students are performing the Broadway musical based on the 1964 Disney film.

Senior Abby Roselieb, who stars in the title role, said most people are familiar with the Disney story, but the musical also draws story aspects from the book.

“There’s a lot more of that life lesson moment in here than there was in the Disney movie,” she said.

Senior Michael Martinez, who plays Burt, said he expects the audience will enjoy the production.

“It’s going to be a fun show, for sure,” he said. “There’s a lot of big dance numbers.”

Martinez and Roselieb said the cast has done a lot of work to learn those dance numbers, the hardest of which they said was “Step in Time.”

“There’s a lot of very complex things we’re doing,” Martinez said. “We have to do all that while we sing.”

SEASPAR strives to be on the cutting edge of special recreation services. Its most recent accomplishment is the creation of Wonders, a Multi-Sensory Room at the Lisle Park District Recreation Center. It creates a terrific environment for individuals with sensory integration problems and other disabilities to relax and explore. In its first year of operation, significant development skills and break-throughs have been documented and individuals have experienced a heightened sense of relaxation.

Already set for this summer is an after summer school camp for students attending the Extended School Year in School Districts 210 and 113A. There also are other day camps for those not attending summer school, including a teen camp at Centennial Recreation Center. Other programs to be hosted in Lemont are swim lessons, sports camp, Special Olympics flag football, wheelchair softball, aqua exercise, social club and Sunshine Through Golf. Residents also should be aware that a Lemont pick-up at Centennial Park is offered for all special events.

Get-acquainted events are already underway so that community members can meet the staff and the staff can meet its new participants. It is important to learn what programs are important to Lemont residents. A special invitation is extended to the community for the Welcome, Lemont Family Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 2 at Centennial Park from noon to 3 p.m.

moves by new COD board

If you were hoping the new majority on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees would hit the ground running at their first meeting, starting the process of repudiating all the controversial decisions we’ve seen out of the school in the past year, then you were likely thrilled with what you saw at the April 30 meeting.

If you felt, though, the winners from the April 7 election should allow the outgoing board members to recede into obscurity with at least a little bit of dignity, well, that didn’t happen.

Some strife is inevitable. The three holdovers from the previous board lineup who represent the former majority aren’t likely to support the four members, led by new Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, in many of their efforts to roll back all of those bad decisions.

There are going to be a lot of 4-3 votes, as there were April 30.

Putting its stamp on President Robert Breuder’s medical leave by voting to put him on administrative leave – good. Now he can’t declare his medical leave ended and go back to work at any time he pleases. Moving forward with a state-run audit of the college’s finances – also good. We need clarity on whether the college has been a good steward of tax dollars and students’ tuition.

Hiring temporary legal counsel for the board that had previously represented Hamilton – an eyebrow raiser for sure.

What was decidedly not good was the political theater around the awarding of “certificates of appreciation” for outgoing board members Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda.

New Vice Chairwoman Deanne Marie

Mazzochi, part of the “Clean Slate” of candidates that bested Savage and Svoboda at the polls, questioned whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding and could have an impact on ongoing investigations of the school. To an observer, this line of questioning seems like a mean-spirited dig rather than a sincere concern.

Apparently it wasn’t sufficient to have defeated Savage and Svoboda at the polls, to have been given a mandate from voters that sweeping change was needed on the board.

Instead of being a gracious victor and moving on to clean up the mess made by previous leaders, we have an overt attempt to humiliate those who were defeated. It’s no surprise that Savage and Svoboda chose to leave before the official vote on the certificates.

Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda took part in votes that were openly derided on this very opinion page, and were part of a former board that generally left the entire Chicago region scratching its collective heads trying to understand what was going on in Glen Ellyn. If the ongoing investigations point fingers in their direction, so be it. That’s another matter for another day.

Being right on many, or even most, of the issues doesn’t give the new board majority carte blanche to treat the new minority, or anyone else, in a disrespectful fashion.

There’s a lot to fix, but showing some decorum in the process would go a long way toward healing the wounds on campus, too.

I can understand them taking out their anger on the police because they see them as the people who perpetrated the crime against their victim. Red Stars Down Sky Blue FC 1-0 in World Cup Send-Off Colaprico scores first professional goal as Chicago stays unbeaten in 2015 Chicago, Illinois – – The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Chicago Red Stars dominated and stayed unbeaten in their third match of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, defeating Sky Blue FC 1-0 behind rookie midfielder Danielle Colaprico’s first tally of her professional career. While the visitors from New Jersey were without all of their World-Cupbound players, the home match served as the Send-Off event for five of the eight Chicago stars who will be competing in this summer’s tournament in Canada.

The Red Stars put pressure on their opponents early and created the first close look in the 5th minute, as defender Taryn Hemmings sprinted up the right wing and sent a dangerous ball to the far post. Teammate Vanessa DiBernardo was unfortunate to see her header from a tight angle sail just over the frame. A mere four minutes later, the hosts’ aggressive approach nearly paid off, DiBernardo coming close to stripping goalkeeper Brittany Cameron of the ball for what would have been a certain tally.

Chicago had its next quality chance moments later. Former Virginia standout Colaprico sent Lori Chalupny down the left and the 31-year-old’s centering pass seemed destined to be tapped home at the doorstep. Instead, it evaded both defenders and attackers, trickling just wide of the far post.

Bill proposes to eliminate frivolous campaign lawsuits

By JOE SINOPOLI jsinopoli@shawmedia.com CICERO – Every election year, someone somewhere finds themselves fighting to stay on the ballot because of challenges over minor errors in filling out petitions.

But measures are being taken so candidates don’t have to waste time and money defending simple errors made in the process.

The Cook County Board of Elections is working with Springfield legislators on a harmless error bill “so candidates don’t have to jump through hoops to get on the ballot,” Cook County election Board spokeswoman Courtney Greve said.

Sen. Daniel Biss, D-Skokie, is sponsoring the bill, and, according to Greve, is using the Morton District 201 election as an example of “how eliminating these harmless errors would allow better ballot access.”

Nommensen said the students were excited to get to perform with a famous singer like Hudson and the producers of the show tried to calm some of the giddiness during practice.

I set aside my desire for the bacon-and-blue-cheese-infused hamburger with truffled mayo and sampled the Cuban sandwich. The fresh ground mustard worked well with sweet pickles and the smokiness of the pork, all encased in a perfectly toasted Cuban roll, akin to French bread.

For dessert, we tried the salted caramel cheesecake. It looked so much like ice cream we thought it would be cold, but it was light, fluffy and sweet with the right amount of salted caramel flavor on top of a toasty graham cracker crust.

DOWNERS GROVE – A star turn on the Food Network show “Restaurant Impossible” spotlighted Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and the Zest Bistro located within, where the food has always been center stage.

Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the television program, said it was one of just a few times in years of filming the show that he actually enjoyed the food served at the outset. That’s high praise from a well-regarded chef who never hesitates to call it like he sees it.

That there was nothing wrong with the menu in the first place was confirmed when my date and I recently paid a visit to Zest. Though we were both hungry, we asked our waiter to give us more time to peruse the choices, because every item sounded delectable.

Before picking entrees, we decided to appease our appetites by ordering the short rib nachos appetizer. Thick and crunchy tortilla chips were the foundation for a great blend of flavors that ranged from the sweetness of the beef to the tang of Cotija cheese sauce and lime horseradish crema, with a hint of spiciness from fresh green chilies.

We paired our appetizer with beverages. My date picked a beer from an impressive list of offerings by independent breweries, while I chose the Dark and Stormy Mule served in a copper mug. The rum-based drink did a dance on my taste buds with simple syrup and ginger beer leading the tango.

Irvine’s signature pot roast, introduced to the menu after his recent visit to Downers Grove, must be a fan favorite, as Zest had just served the last of a roast made a bit earlier in the day and was in the process of cooking a second.

My companion was slightly disappointed not to be able to try the dish, but that changed when her salmon entree arrived. The perfectly cooked fillet was coated in a honey mustard glaze and served with a sweet and savory orange mustard

The Lemont softball team won its third game in a row Tuesday, knocking off Bremen 14-2 in five innings.

The Indians pounded out 17 hits, led by a 4-for-4 performance at the plate from Elaina Latz, who also contributed three runs and three RBIs. Rachel Uher had a triple and two runs batted in while pitcher Jade Mardjetko struck out five while allowing no earned runs.

On Saturday, the squad defeated Chicago Christian 13-5 behind an offense that produced 16 hits. Latz went 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs while Maddy Vermejan was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and six RBIs. Mardjetko pitched five innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out two.

A day earlier, the Indians knocked off Argo 14-2 as Rylie Jay hit for the cycle and added four RBIs and three runs scored. Vermejan was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs and Lauren May went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Mardjetko allowed one hit in a complete-game effort.

For his career, Jay is 10-5 with 19 saves and has struck out 121 batters while yielding 65 hits in 111 1/3 innings.

The Illini won their 21st game in a row Sunday, a streak that began back on March 30 with a 6-2 victory against Ohio State, as their overall record improved to 40-6-1 at that time.

Fellow Lemont grads Josh Ferry and Trevor Murphy also are on the roster.

Illinois is back in action today for the start of a three-game series against Rutgers that ends May 10.
