Shaw Media to acquire weekly newspapers in Kendall County SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of Suburban Life, announced June 17 that it is purchasing Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren.

Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites.

“We are proud to welcome the Record Newspapers to our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We look forward to continuing the Farrens’

NEWS BRIEF Lemont mayor gets reappointed to Metra Board for 4-year term

LEMONT – Cook County Commissioners representing suburban Cook County and Southwest Suburban Metra District 3 have appointed Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves to serve a full four-year term on the Metra Board, according to a village of Lemont news release.

In October 2013, Reaves Brian Reaves was chosen to fill the remaining two years of a vacant board position.

In the release, Reaves said it is his goal to continue to add stops to the Heritage Corridor line that goes through Lemont.

“As the population increases and traffic congestion worsens, it is imperative that commuters have transportation options available to them to close this gap,” he said in the release.

Reaves also was recently named the president of the Will County Water Agency and the legislative chair for the Will County Governmental League.

LEMONT – It was one, two, three strikes you’re out at the ol’ ball game in Lemont June 13 at Mount Assisi Field, 13900 Main St. The Lemont Quarrymen Vintage Baseball Club took the field against the Milwaukee Juneaus, for a game played with the uniforms, equipment and rules baseball circa 1858.

The Lemont Historical Society even provided hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jack to spectators.

Lemont loves its hometown Darling

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Chicago Blackhawks fans in Lemont have more to celebrate than their team winning the Stanley Cup Final.

There is also pride about Lemont native and Blackhawks backup goaltender Scott Darling being part of the championship team.

Even though most Lemont residents do not know Darling personally, they have shown their support for him ever since he joined the team this season.

“It’s a connection,” said Julie Roth of Lemont. “We have somebody who’s done an amazing job, and he’s a champion.”

One way they are showing that support is through social media.

Jennifer Macari, head of marketing for Gelsosomos Pizzeria in Lemont, said she started #LemontsDarling to try to rally support in the community.

She made up posters with this hashtag and gave them out so people could display them around town.

The town is happy for Darling on his success, and there also is excitement over a possible appearance of the Stanley Cup in Lemont.

Each player on the championship team gets to spend a day with the cup.

“We hope that the Stanley Cup will make it to Lemont,” said Pollyanna Brewing Co. co-owner Paul Ciciora.

District 113A uncertain of recovery of $96,000 in taxes on vacant lot

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A still is waiting to hear if it will be able to recover more than $96,000 in back taxes it paid on a property at Derby Road and 131st Street.

The district learned in 2014 that Cook County had been charging property taxes on the land since 2003, which the district had not paid.

The board quickly approved paying $96,827.73 for back taxes from 2003 to 2013 to prevent someone else from purchasing the property.

In a July 2014 Lemont Suburban Life article, officials at the Cook County Treasurer’s Office said that the district could recuperate three years of taxes once tax exemption was approved on the property and would be able to retrieve taxes from years prior if it could prove in court that the property should have been tax exempt.

District business manager Barbara Germany said the district is asking the county to reimburse the taxes it paid on the property.

However, she said the attorney for the district has told her that the district can only be certain it will be able to retrieve $5,520.49 from a tax payment it made in 2014, the year they successfully applied for a tax exemption on the property.

Germany said it is a noxious weed agreement the district made with a farmer to maintain the land that allows the property to be tax exempt.

The board passed the first such agreement in April 2014 and is approving the agreement on a year-toyear basis while it determines the future of the property.

In the agreement, the district pays the farmer $100 a year to maintain the land and prevent the growth of noxious weeds.

The board has expressed interest in selling the land if the district sees no use for it.

The district purchased the 10 acres of vacant farm land in 1989, with the idea of eventually building a school there.

LEMONT – Argonne National Laboratory near Lemont celebrated the start of construction on its new combined heat and power plant with a groundbreaking ceremony June 12.

The plant, which is expected to be operational in June 2016, will provide 20 percent of the electricity and 80 percent of the steam heat needed for the campus.

The plant will replace a more than 50-year-old central steam plant that uses coal for power.

The plant will run on natural gas and, according to Argonne, will save 33,044 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

The natural gas will be used as fuel to create 6.3 megawatts of electricity, and the exhaust gas will be reused as heat to create steam.

Paul Kearns, deputy laboratory director for operations and chief operations officer at Argonne, said the new plant is vital because it allows Argonne to have its own power source.

Joanna Livengood, Argonne site office manager with the U.S. Department of Energy, said finances were the biggest obstacle in the project.

She said early discussions about a new plant were held in 2005, but the Department of Energy needed to wait until the project was more financially feasible.

“I think we finally hit the sweet spot where the technology advancements had finally come along well enough, and we hit the right opportunity in the economic environment where borrowing was cheaper,” she said.

Instead of upfront capital or special congressional appropriations, the Department of Energy is working with third-party financier NORESCO using an energy savings performance contract.

NORESCO will provide $22.8 million for building and equipment installation and $18.7 million for operations, maintenance and repair.

The DOE will repay NORESCO over 15 years with money from the plant’s energy savings.

According to Argonne, the plant is expected to save more than $52.3 million in energy costs during the first 15 years.

“This is actually an excellent way to finance a new energy infrastructure here at the laboratory,” Livengood said.

Park District schedules construction SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont Park District will continue construction on a multi-year Centennial Campus connectivity project the week after its Independence Day celebration July 3, according to a park district news release.

The second phase of the project will add paved sidewalks connecting the Centennial Community Center to the CORE Fitness and Aquatics Complex, as well as lighting and enhancements to the parking spaces along the main thoroughfare.

There will be limited traffic pattern disruptions during the construction, which is expected to be completed before school starts in late August.

SPRINGFIELD – Way back, in 1973, then-Gov. Dan Walker hired a young Georgetown University graduate and others for his staff but paid them with money from state agencies rather than from the governor’s office.

The practice ruffled some feathers, as well it should. Folks VIEWS in Springfield started calling Scott them “ghost payrollers.” After Reeder all, it appeared Walker was trying to make it look like he was spending less money to run his office than he really was.

Despite the outcry, the practice continued, and not just for the four years Walker was governor. Both Republican and Democratic governors have emulated Walker’s method of artificially deflating their budgets by pushing some of their expenses off on state agencies.

While it is perfectly legal, it’s a lousy practice. Government needs to be transparent about how it spends money, and this practice isn’t the least bit transparent.

It wasn’t a good idea when Walker did it. It wasn’t a good idea when Rod Blagojevich did it. It wasn’t a good idea when Pat Quinn did it. And it most certainly isn’t a good idea now that Gov. Bruce Rauner is doing it.

House Democrats vented mock outrage June 4 about Beth Purvis, who is Gov. Bruce Rauner’s top education adviser.

She earns $250,000 and is paid from the Department of Human Services, which is the state’s top welfare agency.

Considering that at least 20 local school superintendents across Illinois are earning more than Purvis, it doesn’t seem particularly out of line for what the top education policy adviser to the governor ought to be making. But some Democratic lawmakers have found religion when it comes to the evils of ghost payrolling – at least when a Republican governor is doing it.

The reason this is a bad practice is that government needs to be transparent. And it’s hard to know just how much taxpayer money is being spent to operate the governor’s office when money is siphoned from various agencies.

Purvis is a victim, but not a victim of sexism as some Republicans claim. She is a casualty of the ongoing war between House Speaker Michael Madigan and Gov. Bruce Rauner. She got caught in the crossfire. But she should recover from her political wounds.

After all, other ghost payrollers have. Look no further than the young Georgetown graduate Gov. Walker hired. His name?

Responding to cyclists on the road

If bicyclists would stay on their bike paths that they wanted so badly and cars stay on the road – what they’re supposed to be – there shouldn’t be a problem.

Cars have a proper place to drive, bikes should have a proper place to drive.

Nobody should be getting in each other’s way if they just stayed on the bicycle paths like they’re supposed to.

In response to the writer [in Sound Off] about bicyclists being allowed to take up the whole road. He can’t pick and choose. If you’re riding in a 40 mph area you better stay as close to the curb as you can.

A few corrections about the Edwards House

A few corrections: No tax dollars would have been used to move the Edwards House. The request was to use the permit fees paid by the developer to go toward funding the move. If this is such a good deal, why didn’t more residents clamor at the chance? And, the Marque will be 55 net, not 15. It will be one of the largest developments at five stories and extending back the parking deck. I hope buyers know it is very brightly lit. And we don’t hear complaints, as we did with Arcadia and post office operations.

Local dancers perform in ‘Under the Big Top’ SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LYONS – Professional dancers from several Chicago area townships will perform “Under the Big Top,” a circus-style performance that includes contemporary dance, presented by the Beyond Words Dance Company.

The farm-totable pizza bar Gia Mia is a fresh addition to the dining scene in downtown Wheaton, conceived by chef-owner Brian Goewey.

We left room for dessert, made mozzarella.

Next up had to be woodfired pizza, so we decided on the pancetta and arugula combination, which arrived with a tasty, hand-formed crust drizzled with olive oil, and showing the tell-tale light charring on the edges.

Prepared Neapolitan style, it had delectable smatterings of house-made mozzarella to contrast with the pancetta – an Italian spin on cured bacon – along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was covered in fresh, baby arugula, a wonderfully peppery green.

but next time, we plan on two pizzas and some more of the creative vegetables and salads on the menu such as sugar snap peas prepared with shallots, garlic, mint, whipped ricotta and extra virgin olive oil, or the Tuscan black kale with pear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon.

As for dessert, we loved the Italian pudding and sorbet combo, an abundance of rich-

WHEATON – A contemporary wood plank facade is the sleek new wrapping for the latest restaurant enterprise of chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after his youngest daughter. It opened in downtown Wheaton in April and specializes in wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta dishes and small plates, all ideal for sharing the inventive fresh flavors the chef already is known for at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner.

Gia Mia describes itself as a pizza bar that emphasizes farm-to-fork Italian cooking.

The interior features pale shades of wood and brick that set a warm tone, along with dangling, industrial-chic bulbs for light.

A crowd set a convivial tone in the front dining room the weeknight we visited. The Blackhawks were playing a game running up to the finals, and a television there and one at the bar kept interested fans up on the score.

We opted for the mellow bar area, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of its own, all the better to watch the action at the pizza oven. The controlled inferno holds court in all its red-mosaic-tiled glory in the corner and has ringside seating for diners.

The wine list is extensive and offers some plucky suggestions off the beaten path, such as an Austrian white – Grüner Veltliner – for a light summer aperitif. The mixologists also proffer craft beer selections.

We opened with a smallplate offering of veal meatballs basking in a zesty roasted tomato sauce and topped with little caps of whipped ricotta. The creamy cheese mimicked the velvety texture of the mild-flavored, finely ground meat.

We’re glad we tried one of the unusual vegetable dishes: charred cauliflower. The delicate roasted veggie provided the perfect canvas for a palette of flavors drawn from green and black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-

The Robert Morris baseball team had four Lemont residents on its 2015 roster. Gio Schmitt was a junior infielder, Pat Driscoll was a senior first baseman and catcher, Jeff Worsech was a freshman third baseman and Ed Araujo was a sophomore infielder and pitcher.

Schmitt played in 42 games, starting 20, and totaled 10 hits and 27 runs scored. Driscoll hit .276 in 39 games with six doubles, three homers and 24 RBIs.

varsity standout, Skala was the Sentinels’ ace from her first day on campus, and she may have had her two best seasons her final two year at Westmont. She pitched the Sentinels to regional and sectional titles last year, then helped a young squad win a regional again this season.

Grove North Q YEAR: Senior Q IMPACT: This third baseman provided some pop in the Trojans’ lineup and also provided some leadership for an overall young team. She batted .384 for the year with 10 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs.

Grove North Q YEAR: Sophomore Q IMPACT: The job of a leadoff hitter is to get on base, and Varsbergs excelled. She had an impressive .461 batting average to go with a .506 on-base percentage. She was more than just a solid on-base player as she had some pop with two home runs and 24 RBIs.

Q IMPACT: This junior put up eye-popping offensive numbers this spring, starting with a .567 batting average.

Vermejan knocked out 13 doubles, 10 triples and three home runs and led the Indians in both runs scored [46] and RBIs [52]. The second baseman also stole 11 bases.

NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to 75 ILCS 16-355 (b) that the Board of Library Trustees of the Lemont Public Library District, Cook and DuPage Counties, Illinois, adopted an Ordinance on June 11, 2015, proposing to levy an additional tax of 0.02% of the value of all the taxable property in the District as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue for the purchase of sites and buildings, the construction and equipment of buildings, rental of buildings required for library purposes, and maintenance, repair and alterations of library buildings and equipment. A petition may be filed with the Secretary of the Board of Library Trustees of the Lemont Public Library District within thirty (30) days after publication of this Notice signed by electors of the District equal in number to ten percent (10%) or more of the total number of registered voters in the District or at least 1,394 voters of said Library district requesting that the question of levying such a 0.02% tax be submitted to the electors of the District on 15th day of March, 2016.

If such petition is filed with the Secretary of said Board of Library Trustees within thirty (30) days after the date of publication of this notice, an election shall be held on the 15th day of March, 2016 for the purpose of voting upon such proposition unless the Circuit Court declares that an emergency referendum should be held earlier pursuant to the provisions of the Election Code of the State of Illinois, as amended. If no such petition is filed within said thirty (30) day period, then said Library District shall thereafter be authorized to levy 0.02% for the purposes herein above provided.
