LEMONT – A new charitable group called Project Lemont will host a pub crawl June 5, with proceeds going toward a revival of Lemont’s Keepataw Parade.

The fundraiser starts at 6:30 p.m. with pizza and drinks at Gelsosomo’s Pizza, 206 Main St. The event will be passport themed, with participants traveling to nine locations at their own pace and getting their passport books stamped at each stop.

Besides Gelsosomo’s, the stops include Nick’s Tavern, Main Inn, The Vault, Canal Street Pub, Tom’s Place, Stonehouse Pub, Pollyanna Brewing Company and Front Street Cantina.

The participating taverns also will have door prizes throughout the evening.

Participants will end the evening by gathering at 10:15 p.m. at Front Street Cantina, 319 Front St., for raffle prizes, including special prizes for those who get at least seven stamps in their passport books.

LEMONT – The village of Lemont had its first farmers market of the year June 2 in the Talcott Square parking lot at Talcott Avenue and Stephen Street in downtown Lemont.

The market will continue from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through the end of October.

Developers break ground on Birch Path subdivision

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Construction has begun on the new Birch Path housing development, west of Interstate 355 and south of 127th Street in Lemont.

Representatives from Tempo Development and Century 21, members of the village of Lemont and future subdivision residents gathered for a groundbreaking May 28.

The soon-to-be neighbors attended a dinner afterward at Illinois Bar and Grill.

Mike Ford from Tempo Development and Chuck Dinolfo from Century 21 Affiliated in Lemont planned the development, which is expected to be completed by late fall.

The triangular subdivision, located adjacent to the Rolling Meadows subdivision, will be made up of 17 lots on 6.5 acres.

Maryann Rogers, the listing agent for all the lots with Century 21 Affiliated, said 16 of the 17 lots already have been sold.

Rogers said the lots were sold in nine months, which is quicker than normal for a housing development.

The houses are smaller than some of the recent houses built in Lemont and are targeted toward first-time home owners and older couples looking to downsize.

The Lemont Village Board had approved a final planned unit development for a 19 lot subdivision in December.

The developer revised its plan for 17 lots, and the board approved the new plan during its May 11 meeting.

According to plan designs, the entrance to the subdivision will be at the west end of Stoneybrook Drive, leading to Birch Path Court.

The reduction in the number of lots allows for some larger lots. Lot sizes range from 5,470 to 13,185 square feet, with a majority of the lots being between 7,000 and 8,000 square feet.

There are six models of houses, ranging from 16,000 to 24,00 square feet.

The houses are either one- or two-stories, with most having three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

LEMONT – Administrators with Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A dreamed big when putting together a presentation on their vision for the district’s future.

The District 113A Board of Education heard the presentation at its June 3 meeting.

The goals outlined in the presentation included the return of some of the programs cut in recent years when the district was affected by financial hardship.

High on the priority list was reinstalling the band and choir classes as part of the Old Quarry Middle School curriculum and reopening the blended preschool.

In a timeline of proposed programming changes, Superintendent Courtney Orzel said the district would like to bring back the programs by the 2016-17 school year.

While Lemont Band Boosters offer band and choir as an after-school program, administrators said students have to chose between those programs and other after-school activities.

The preschool program would be a resource particularly for at-risk children who need extra attention before they get to kindergarten or whose families cannot afford to pay for preschool through an outside program.

The district also would like to pilot a 1:1 computer-to-student program by 2016-17. The goal would be

to eventually have two devices per student.

Further down the line, the district would like to implement more new programming, such as full-day kindergarten, more creative elective classes at Old Quarry, art teachers at the primary and intermediate levels and an orchestra program.

Orzel said these program additions are not currently budgeted, and the administration put together the presentation thinking first of what programming it wants for the students.

She said all of the proposals are programs that other school districts have started to implement.

While board members said they do not know yet how the programs would fit in the budget, they were excited by the district’s vision for the future and how it would positively change the district’s profile.

Board member Al Malley said these changes would make the district more attractive to potential residents.

“I know [board members] are used to saying no,” he said. “From what I saw here, it is doable.”

Lemont’s Sunset Soiree to host first concert of summer June 11 SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Walk-Ins will kick off the Sunset Soiree concert series with a performance at 7 p.m. June 11 at the corner of Stephen Street and Talcott Avenue.

I challenge anyone to find a single spot in the park where the grass has been affected by a dog relieving itself. …

Three, people walk their dogs to provide exercise for their dogs. A typical backyard is not an adequate exercise area for most dogs. Personally, I think someone should not own a dog unless they are committed to providing daily exercise.

Four, the suggestion was made to call the police to issue a ticket if a dog steps on your grass. The police have more important things to do than respond to this type of nuisance call. Someone doing this could easily get the reputation as the neighborhood pest.

Bike riders need to stay on bike paths and off the roads

We live in Lombard now, but my son was primarily raised in Elmhurst and attended grammar, middle and high school in Elmhurst. I was both saddened and angry to read in the article titled “DuPage officials warn heroin crisis not over” that only eight DuPage county schools are allowing Robert Crown to speak to their students about heroin. I urge the parents and schools out there not to put your head in the sand.

I just wanted to Sound Off about the sounds of lawnmowers and leaf blowers and everything that goes on in the summer to create this loud motor noise that goes on every day. I know it’s summertime. I know lawns have to be mowed and grass clippings have to be blown off, but there’s no way to sit out in your yard anymore on your deck or your patio and just enjoy the breeze and enjoy nature without this motor noise going on constantly at such loud decibels. During my next visit, I decided I wanted to put my red meat cravings on the backseat for the sake of vegetarian readers, and ordered the veggie burger topped with avocado and tomato.

Back Alley got points straight away for the clearly house-made patty instead of

the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear.

I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform

amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor.

I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange.

The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst.

The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes.

Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers.

Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger.

What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich.

A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had.

The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. Back Alley definitely does so with success, along with a friendly waitstaff quick to offer a suggestion, and a welcoming interior with rockand-roll appeal.

If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

Thompson has fine finish in the 400

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – In a perfect world, Chris Thompson would have liked a little higher finish in the Class 3A final of the 400-meter dash at the state track meet.

But after the completion of his 2015 campaign, which included an unbeaten regular season and conference and sectional championships, the Lemont junior wasn’t about to complain about his sixth-place finish.

“I came to get a little higher place, but I’m definitely happy with this year,” Thompson said. “It’s been pretty cool. No one likes losing and to not lose once during the regular season was special. It was a great season.”

Thompson, who was injured last year at the conference meet and wasn’t able to compete in the sectional, crossed the line in 48.44 seconds in the finals. In the preliminary races May 29, he posted a time of 48.24.

Competing well against the state’s best was encouraging to Thompson and also showed him a few areas to work on during the offseason.

“It was an honor to be here,” he said. “Everyone is an elite athlete. You see everyone’s face that you’ve been reading about on Dyestat [track website] all year. I went hard the first 100, I just have to get my 200 speed up. I’ve got to work on that for next year.

“But overall it was awesome, even the hotel experience, just getting to hang out with your buddies. And look at the crowd, it was packed and had like a college feel.”

Thompson also was a part of the 4x400 relay, along with Connor Koehler, Eric Whatley and Drake White, that also competed in the prelims and posted a time of 3:23.55.

“This was one of the best seasons we’ve ever had,” Thompson said about his team. “It was a special year.”

“Our seniors have been to state before and the junior class has been to state before,” Prangen. “So even though we are young, we still have a bit of experience. And for the freshmen, this is all new for them.

They are getting a taste of it and hopefully they take this with them for the next three years.”

In fact, on the game-winning goal against St. Francis, it was a freshman, Ruane, connecting with a sophomore, Bermele.

Ruane now has 11 assists on the season to go with 17 goals.

“That was a great goal,” Prangen said. “We work on set pieces a lot and we talk about games coming down to set pieces and sure enough, that is what happened. For us, it was a very good goal and it was well-executed.

“Supersectional games usually come down to individual moments and this one came down to that corner. Nobody was stopping that.”

DARIEN – With neither side able to generate many scoring chances, the Class 2A Hinsdale South soccer supersectional June 2 between Lemont and St. Francis had the feel of whoever scores first wins.

That was exactly how it played out.

With just less than 15 minutes left in the second half, the Indians’ Carli Bermele found the back of the net on a header off a corner kick from Mairead Ruane and that goal held up in a 1-0 victory.

Lemont, which improved to 18-4-3 on the spring, advances to the state semifinals for the fourth time, all since 2009.

“That was the perfect ball,” Bermele said. “I thought someone else was going to get it. But then I backed up, got right under it and I knew that might be our one chance. I knew I needed to get it in.

“We were in the supersectional last year and lost and that was a terrible feeling; we had such a great team last year. This year, we’ve made it this far and we are just pushing through it all.”

The Indians will play at 1 p.m. June 5 against a Carmel team that is 19-3-1 and has outscored its five playoff opponents by a combined 25-0 margin.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Mike Gralla had the two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to ignite the two-run rally that gave Lemont a 2-1 victory against Sacred Heart-Griffin in the 2014 Class 3A state championship game.

On June 1 at the Lemont Sports Complex, the Indians’ senior right fielder was up to his old tricks.

Gralla singled off the glove of Joliet Catholic’s first baseman in the top of the ninth inning, and a sliding Austin Tittle barely beat the diving tag of Hilltoppers catcher Nick Dalesandro to give Lemont and junior right-hander Garrett Acton a 2-1 victory in the championship game of the Class 3A Lemont Regional.

“If there’s one kid with ice water in his veins, it’s Gralla,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said.

Acton and JCA junior righthander Drake Fellows waged quite a duel. Both went the distance, allowing second-inning runs and then nothing until Gralla’s hit in the ninth.

“With Drake on the other side, I knew I had to battle and keep the score low,” said Acton, who allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one. “The adrenaline definitely was going. When I needed a big pitch, I was able to find that little extra.”

Acton had some struggles early on this season then battled through a groin injury.

He had two relief appearanc-

es late in the regular season, and Monday’s start was his first in about three weeks.

But he managed to complete a 124-pitch effort.

“There was no way I was coming out,” Acton said. “I just had to stay effective and get the outs.”

“The Acton boy did an unbelievable job,” JCA coach Jared Voss said. “That was an impressive performance.”

Fellows was impressive as well. He struck out 13, walked one and allowed seven hits.

Tittle walked on a 3-2 pitch with one out in the ninth and moved to second on Acton’s second hit with two outs before scoring on Gralla’s hit.

“I don’t know if I was safe or not,” Tittle said with a smile. “I knew it was close.

But there wasn’t any way I was going to stop at third.”

Lemont (20-13 and the No. 3 seed in the regional) went ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Singles by Nick Wisz, Acton and Gralla filled the bases with nobody out. Fellows struck out the next hitter and appeared on the way to escaping the threat with a 1-2-3 double play, but a high throw to first allowed courtesy runner Nate Broskovetz to score.

Wisz, Acton and Gralla had two hits each for the Indians.

“We played well,” Storako said. “This is the type of team I thought we could be at the beginning of the season. But I told the guys: It’s not how you play the first 35 games – it’s how you play the last seven [in the playoffs].”

Lemont 7, Lincoln-Way West 2 Lemont reached the regional final after knocking off Lincoln-Way West 7-2 on May 28, avenging a regular-season loss against the Warriors.

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening inning, thanks in large part to a two-run double by Garrett Acton, and held a shutout until the seventh.

“We really came out very aggressive at the plate,” Acton said. “I am very happy with my performance. It felt good to get the big hit in the first inning to get us going.”

Austin Tittle was 3 for 4 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs and Acton finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Nick Wisz also contributed a double, an RBI and two runs.

“We came out and hit the ball great,” Tittle said. “Ryan [Sublette] pitched great, we hit great and we played solid defense to pick up this big win.”

Ryan Sublette tossed a complete game, striking out five while allowing six hits and no earned runs as he improved to 4-1 on the spring.

“I tried to throw strikes and keep ahead of the hitters,” Sublette said. “My fastball was working well, and I was grateful for the big lead.

This was a great victory for us.”
