his photos of places he has traveled and his time in the U.S. Navy gave him the opportunity to travel a lot. He now runs a photography business called JS Photo.

Brisick said he picked up his photography while in the military because it provided camera equipment and dark rooms to servicemen.

“In the sense of photography, the government fostered the careers of a lot of artists,” he said.

He said his time in Vietnam may have influenced him as an artist by giving him a more intense perspective on life.

Soft pastel artist Gary Wick of Worth said he does not think his time in the military affected him as much as others, though he still felt compelled

to participate when he heard about the show.

He said he started painting after high school and was drafted into the Vietnam War when he was 25. He said he was not able to do much drawing while in the service but later painted portraits of photos he had taken during the war: one of a sergeant and two of a house girl.

Wick retired from his career in 1996 to become a professional painter and now paints mostly landscapes.

Brisick said he hopes the show makes people aware of how veterans are active and successful members of the community.

“It was more important that a theme for a show,” he said. “It was a statement.”

LEMONT – An informal tree survey by the Lemont Park District determined about 507 of its 1,288 trees have been affected by the emerald ash borer, according to a Park District news release.

Northview Park on McCarthy Road and Centennial Park on 127th Street have been most affected.

According to the release, a majority of the trees in the two parks most affected were not planted as part of a landscape plan but self propagated over time.

The Park District will have to remove 182 trees from Northview Park, which is first on the list for tree removal.

Director of Maintenance and Planning Dawn Banks said the Northview Park tree removal is expected to cost $9,800 and should start in a couple of weeks, weather permitting.

The rate comes out to about $54 per tree on average. By

comparison, the village of Lemont paid about $205 per tree on average to remove 252 ash trees on parkways in two subdivision.

Banks and Lemont Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said the smaller size of the Park District trees and more concentrated area the trees will be removed from were part of the reason the Park District paid less.

While the staff is working on a tree replacement plan to fit into future budgets, the immediate concern is removing the dead trees, according to the release.

With the number of dead trees in Northview Park and the age of its playground, the Lemont Park District Board and staff will work on a new master plan for renovating the park.

The process, which is expected to take about two years, will include various planning meetings, design research, budget consideration and a bidding process before construction starts.

LEMONT – Home sales in Lemont for July stayed the same compared to June, but the median sales price increased by 53 percent, according to data from the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

The median sales price increased from $308,750 in June to $473,486 in July on 14 homes sold each month.

The July median sales price also is a 50 percent increase from $315,000 in July 2013, although last year had eighth more houses sold.

Home sales in Woodridge were steady comparing July to June, but median home prices dipped by about 16 percent over the same time period.

In July, 24 homes were sold in town at a median price of $252,500 – down from $299,900 in June, when 19 homes were sold in Woodridge.

July’s 24 home sales in Woodridge is down slightly compared to 30 homes sold in July 2013, according to the data.

Total house sales in Downers Grove were up in July during the previous month but lagged behind sales in the same month a year ago, according to the data. The village saw 68 single-family home sales this July, compared with 51 this June and 79 in July 2013.

This July, the median sale price in Downers Grove was $363,500, compared to $364,900 in July last year.

In nearby Westmont, both total home sales and median sales price in Westmont increased in July. In July, 20 houses were sold in town at a median price of $272,500 – up $20,500 from the $252,000 median sales price in June, when 15 homes were sold.

The total home sales and median sales price in Darien continue to fluctuate. In

July, 26 Darien houses were sold at a median sales price of $310,000, which is seven more closings than June, when the median sales price was $360,000. In July 2013, 23 homes were sold at a median sales price of $265,000.

The total homes sold in Lisle increased slightly in July, while the median sales price remains about constant. In July 32 Lisle homes sold at a median sales price

of $394,000, compared to the 28 homes sold at $410,000, according to the data.

In Bolingbrook, 76 homes were sold in June compared to 75 homes sold in July – both down from July 2013, when there were 84 homes sold. The median sales price in Bolingbrook continues to fluctuate, jumping from $187,500 in May, $211,500 in June and $185,000 in July.

Sometimes it’s good to take a break from modern technology SPRINGFIELD – I bought a “new” phone the other day. My 6-year-old, Anna, gave it a perplexed look.

“Where’s the buttons, Daddy?”

“There isn’t any, dear. It’s what’s called a rotary phone.”

She gave it another skeptical look and walked away.

Yes, when I dial, I actually dial.

An hour or so later when my wife got home from work she, too, gave it a bewildered look and said, “Why did you install that old thing? It doesn’t even have Caller ID. How will we know whether to answer the VIEWS phone or not?”

Scott Folks, it’s not about nostalReeder gia. Sometimes, I think I just need a break from technology. Growing up, all the phones in our house had dials. The idea of push button technology was in its infancy. No one ever got stuck in voicemail hell. I remember watching a news program back in the ’70s where the reporter noted that someday people might have phones small enough to carry in their pockets – that weren’t connected to wires. My father just shook his head and said “I wouldn’t want to have a phone where I could be called anytime, anywhere.” Flash forward 40 years and now he carries a cellphone with him wherever he goes. I’m the same way – electronics seem to be taking over my life. My kids make bookmarks at school but I have no way to use them with my Kindle.

I bicycle 17 miles daily, but not through the country roads of Sangamon County. Instead, I’m on a stationary bike at a gym, peering at movies on my iPad. And I have a phone in my pocket with an app for just about everything but curing cancer.

But, gosh, it’s hard to escape the constant stream of communication. Anyone can reach me anytime. Facebook posts, tweets, emails and phone calls pour in constantly. And my 8-year-old, Grace, loves to play games on the device. When I was a kid, I was told a phone was nothing to play with. Today they are a source of entertainment.

When I walk into a restaurant, I see faces young and old enthralled with whatever is on that tiny screen. Don’t people talk to one another face-to-face anymore?

Installing a dial phone won’t make those frustrations go away, of course. But it does remind me of a simpler time when it was possible to hang up on technology – without pushing button.

According to the latest local newspaper, this mayor is trying to push through on his own that proposed sports complex again. He’s looking for financing. Thanks to good Samaritan who helped with pet, Jessie On July 2, our beloved young dog, Jessie, was hit on Woodridge Drive at Echo Park. It was an unfortunate accident but fatal. My husband had no vehicle, called me and before I arrived, a wonderful gentleman stopped and took them to the vet hospital. I was told he was employed at the nearby grade school. Later, he remained at the hospital until I arrived to be with him. Sadly, we did not get his name. I hope he knows how truly thankful we are. He made us realize there are people out there that really care and look out for others. With all the bad news we hear now from the media, there is sunshine. We will be forever grateful.

As a citizen of Lemont, I just was reading about the water suit we’re paying for, like, $5,200 or something. I was under the impression Lemont had wells. And I also noticed your article on the sports complex, another financial disaster, because I believe it’ll cost about $1 million just to fix it up. Why doesn’t the village spend money on existing features that they have, like the quarry area, the paths, the roads repaired down there. What about Keepataw Days? No funds for that either, I guess. No pride in it either.

Born in Chicago, IL on June 20, 1929, she was a longtime resident of Westmont, IL, Lake Summerset in Davis, IL, and most recently of Lemont, IL. She married Walter T. Pepich on April 15, 1950. Her favorite roles were as a wife, mother and grandmother. However, Joan worked as an Administrative Assistant at Sidley Austin, LLC. She also served one term as President and multiple terms as Secretary of the Lake Summerset Board of Directors.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Walter.

She is survived by her six children, Bruce (Lisa Englander), Brian (Linda), Barry (Laurel), Brent (Ann), Belinda (Mark Polan) and Beth (Tony Gulczynski). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and many friends.

By MEGANN HORSTEAD Lemont resident Debbie Trinco doesn’t think there is enough awareness surrounding prostate cancer, and she is taking action to promote the cause.

The cause hits close to home for Trinco, 59. Her husband, Darryl Trinco, also 59, has been receiving treatment for prostate cancer off and on since 2001, she said.

Debbie Trinco said cancer doesn’t affect just the person battling it. She emphasized the overall effect it has on spouses, family and friends as well.

“It’s not just an emotional and physical issue ... It definitely hurts couples, families and friends, too,” she said.

Back in 2001, the Trincos had been planning to vacation in Aruba when Darryl developed a cough. Finding that the cough would not go away, they canceled their trip and Darryl went to see his doctor for a checkup. In noting concerns, a prostate-specific antigen test revealed a spike in his PSA numbers.

Although screening for the disease typically does not begin until age 50, Darryl had developed prostate cancer at age 46.

The Trincos wanted to determine what steps to take after ending his first round of treatment in summer 2004.

At a get-together at the Trincos house, a friend of Debbie’s talked to her about the Support Educate Advocate Blue Prostate Chicago organization and its efforts to promote awareness. Within the same week, the Trin-

walk follows at 9 a.m. in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, 1750 N. Clark St. The Run & Walk is a family event offering educational sessions, free PSA blood testings, a free lunch, a band, tumblers, a bouncy house and more and is the only event promoting the cause’s awareness in Chicago, according to Swire.

Since getting involved with the run and walk eight years ago, the Trincos have organized one of the largest fundraising teams. Their team has 90 to 100-plus participants annually.

As part of a media blitz effort with SEA Blue, Debbie’s “famous pretzels” are making appearances across the Chicago area to promote the fight against prostate cancer.

The pretzels are homemade at Debbie’s house and decorated blue for prostate awareness.

“It’s like this whole ALS/ Lou Gehrig’s Ice Water Bucket challenge,” Debbie said.

“Unless people hear about it, no one will know about it.”

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital.

Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team.

Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home.

Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces.

Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch.

During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled.

After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived.

My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option.

Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist.

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream.

My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste

a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish.

My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had.

In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger.

We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured.

Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Defense leads Lemont to season opening win

JOLIET – Lemont overcame a lightning delay and a tough Plainfield South defense to make coach Bret Kooi a winner in his debut as the Indians prevailed 17-7 on Aug. 29.

The opener between the Indians and the Cougars started late because lightning delayed the start of the sophomore game. The varsity contest made it to the 4:41 mark of the first quarter before lightning delayed it for nearly 45 minutes.

Lemont scored with 6:29 left in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead when quarterback Chris Thompson ran the ball in from the 13 on a keeper.

South tied the game at 7-7 with three seconds left in the first half when defensive end Eric Johnson forced a Thompson fumble, which was picked up and returned 25 yards for a score by fellow lineman Brenton Dickson.

The halftime adjustments Lemont made proved to be the key in the second half.

“We knew the first game was going to be a tough one for us. Our offense came out a little flat in the beginning of the game, but we adjusted pretty well at halftime and in the second half we picked it up a little bit,” Lemont receiver Flynn Nagel said.

“We saw their safety was coming over to the strong side on every play. We saw they were playing a little press [coverage] to the weak side, so when the ball was in the middle of the field their corner was backing off so we were able to take advantage of hitches on that and those kind of adjustments helped us out in the second half,” said Nagel, who finished with eight catches for 63 yards.

Lemont pulled away with a 10-point fourth quarter. Quarterback Ryan Dawson, who alternated series with Thompson, found Jimmy Kepouros on a 28-yard touchdown strike with 11:01 to play, and kicker Marcin Orszulak added a 24yard field goal to put the game

Hard-working Lemont looks to maintain success Indians seeks sixth straight conference title

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Height has rarely been a commodity for the Lemont girls volleyball team, which has instead relied on a hard-working mentality during a very successful run under coach Chris Zogata.

This year promises to be no different as the squad looks for its sixth straight conference title and another 20-win campaign. Lemont has reached that plateau in 12 of Zogata’s 13 seasons as head coach.

“We are not real big, as usual, but we will be hard working,” said Zogata about her team, which features no 6-footers. “We play bigger than we are because we work very hard.”

The Indians, who graduated a pair of collegiate players in Kelly Ferguson and Cara Howell, return a strong core from a 27-win team a year ago, led by senior libero Haley Sullivan. She has been on the

The offense figures to be an area of strength, but defense will be a key for the Indians.

“I think we are pretty balanced offensively, but because we are small, we have to play defense,” the coach said.

“Defense will really keep us in matches and keep matches

close. As long as we are playing defense and passing the ball well, we are very good.”

Lemont started off the 2014 campaign by splitting its first six matches, five of which came at last weekend’s Benet invite. The Indians defeated Moline and West Aurora while suffering tough three-game losses to the host Redwings and Waubonsie Valley. Benet played in the state championship match last year and Waubonsie won a regional title.

“I thought we played really well,” Zogata said. “We were competitive in every single match.”

The team opened the season by knocking off Oak Forest in a South Suburban Conference match. A year ago, Lemont went 12-1 in league play.

TIME AND PLACE OF OPENING OF BIDS: Sealed Proposals for the improvement described herein will be received at the office of the Clerk of the Village of Lemont, 418 Main Street, Lemont, Illinois, 60439 until 10:00 a.m., September 30, 2014, and will be publicly opened and read at that time.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The proposed work is officially known as STATE STREET RETAINING WALL REPLACEMENT, SOUTH OF CUSTER STREET and consists of the removal and replacement of a modular stone retaining wall and appurtenant construction.

III. INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS: A. All work will be in conformance with the "Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction", dated January 1, 2012.

Only qualified Contractors who have demonstrated that they have performed satisfactorily on projects of similar nature will be entitled to receive Plans from the Engineer and submit Proposals. Contractors who have not previously demonstrated their ability to perform this type of work with the Engineer shall submit a "Statement of Experience" consisting of a list of previous projects of similar nature for evaluation by the Engineer in order to receive Plans. The Owner reserves the right to issue Bid documents only to those Contractors deemed qualified.

All Proposals must be accompanied by a Bank Cashier's Check, Bank Draft, Certified Check, or Bid Bond for not less than five percent (5%) of the total amount of the Bid, or as provided in the applicable sections of the "Standard Specifications".

Commuter Parking Information Daily Parking Pay Stations Effective October 1, 2014, there will be an upgrade to the pay stations for the daily parking slots at the Lemont Metra Station. Pay cards will no longer be available and will no longer be accepted. The pay stations accept credit cards and cash, but do not give back change. The fee for the daily parking will increase to $1.50 per slot/per day. The improved technology and design will make paying more user friendly.

In addition, the pay stations will be integrated with “Passport Parking” to allow pay by phone payment. More information regarding the Passport Parking program will be posted in the Metra Station.

Commuter Permit Parking The process to purchase a commuter parking permit has been changed this year. The Village will no longer be issuing permits on a first come first serve basis in October.

Additionally, permits will be issued on an annual basis with the option to pay quarterly - $60, semi-annually - $110, or annually - $220.

Lemont Center for the Arts Reception The Lemont Center for the Arts will hold their Opening Reception and Awards Presentation for their Fourth Anniversary Exhibit on Sunday, September 7, from 1-3 p.m.

The exhibit will run September 5 - November 2. The center is located at 1243 State Street, Unit 101.

Lemont Street Fair

The current permit holders will receive an offer letter in September to renew their permit by November 15, 2014. If the permit is not renewed, the Village will issue the permit to the next person on the wait list. Mark your calendar for the Historical Society’s Annual Lemont Street Fair on September 20 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This will consist of an antique market, rummage sale, craft vendors, bake sale, free kids activities, museum tours and family photos in Granny’s attic, food, music and fun! There will also be pumpkins and fall décor from Puckerville Farm, “Roadshow” appraisals from 1 – 3 p.m., and musical entertainment by the Holy Cross/HM Marimba Ensemble.

This all takes place on Lemont Street between Illinois and Cass in front of the Lemont Historical Society. If you are interested in a vendor table or would like more information, please contact the Historical Society at 630-257-2972.
