Plymouth Place resident donates to library genealogy collection By MEGAN PIOTROWSKI msleditorial@shawmedia.com While the season of giving may have ended for most, at the Riverside Public Library it’s only just begun. On Dec. 7, 2014, the library, 1 Burling Road, accepted a unique donation from the Czech and Slovak American Genealogy Society of Illinois. The society donated their Czech and Solvak genealogy collection of more than 1500 books, maps, magazines and pamphlets to the Riverside Public Library in the name of one its members, Paul M. Nemecek. Nemecek is a resident of the Plymouth Place Retirement
Community, 315 N. La Grange Road, La Grange Park. He declined to be interviewed about the collection. “The collection is named after [Nemecek] because he was the one responsible for setting [the collection] up,” Riverside Public Library Director Janice Foley said. There are many volunteers involved in managing the CSAGSI’s collection, but Nemecek had a large role in establishing the genealogy library from its inception, Foley said. While this collection certainly will attract new patrons to Riverside, the donation benefits both parties.
CALL NOW 1-800-254-7349
“We’re excited for the partnership,” Foley said. “It’s a win-win for both the CSAGSI and ourselves.” The relocation of the Paul M. Nemecek Genealogy Library from its previous space at the T.G. Masaryk School in Cicero has many advantages. A majority of the society’s 800 members are located closer to Riverside, and the new location provides more parking, handicapped accessibility and a closer proximity to public transportation via the Metra. The new location is on the lower level of the Riverside Public Library near their public meeting room. The library plans on having a grand opening of the collection in March. “We’re currently in the process of cataloging all the materials and making them

accessible online,” Foley said. “If you were to look at the space right now, you’d just see a few empty shelves, a chair and two computers.” While the focus of the current collection is Czech and Slovak, Foley said the principles of genealogical research are similar for all ethnic groups. She hopes to continue to expand the section in this respect. The partnership also brings computers indexing Chicago’s Bohemian National Cemetery Records and the Denni Hlasatel Obituary Index (1891 – 1995). The society volunteers will continue to manage the collection from their new location, assisting patrons with research and leading special programs on collection’s use and the subject of genealogy.

The decision to close schools because the snow is too high or the temperatures are too low isn’t made easily. Neither is the decision to keep schools open, according to the superintendents at Lyons Township and Riverside-Brookfield high school districts. Both school districts remained open Jan. 7 when almost every other school district in the Chicago area, including Chicago public schools, called off classes as a result of the frigid temperatures. So why do some schools close while others do not? Riverside-Brookfield High School Superintendent Kevin Skinkis said the safety of travel for students and staff is a big factor when deciding whether or not to cancel classes for the day. “[The night of Jan. 6], we looked at the forecasted temperatures and we looked back at last year and saw those temps were not that severe,” Skinkis said. “Not only did we have that polar vortex last year, but we had a lot of snow on the ground.” Staff members also had input, he added. “Canceling school is not an easy decision to make and there will always be parents that are not happy with the choice that is made,” Skinkis said. “Our goal is to try and have school open every day as scheduled. We understand that there are parents who may have a concern with the weather and choose to keep their child at home.” Lyons Township High School Superintendent Thom-

Kilrea agreed student safety is the primary concern. “We’re trying to make a conscious decision on student safety based on a forecast,” Kilrea said. “We look at what we’ve done previously. It’s not an exact science.” While it can be assumed student safety is a primary factor in deciding whether or not to close a school, some administrators have considerations other administrators may not

The message stated the school stood by its decision to stay open Jan. 7, but the drop to below-zero temperatures without the wind factor prompted the decision. WESTERN SPRINGS – Whether it be through the creation of her chainmail jewelry, woven tapestries or beadwork “painting,” the art of Western Springs resident Beverly Atseff takes time and patience. The intricate works come together slowly, from single threads, beads or rings of silver. They come together to form something complex and beautiful. Weaving, the process of taking single threads and pulling them tightly together with the help of a loom, is a centuries-old process of creating fabric. Although the process can be slow and often solitary, that’s also what has continued to draw Atseff to create her work. “You have to eat the elephant one bite at a time,” Atseff joked of the long process. “I’m not a TV watcher, so I can weave at night. LA GRANGE – Following winter break for students of Lyons Township High School, events are picking up again. The Lyons Township High School Theatre Board will present the play “Sylvia” beginning Thursday at the school’s South Campus Performing Arts Center, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road. “Sylvia” is a comedic play by A.R. Gurney about a couple who moves to Manhattan after raising kids in the suburbs for 22 years. When the husband, Greg, brings home a dog he finds in the park with the name Sylvia on its tags, it becomes a “major bone of contention between hus-
band and wife,” according to a news release from the school. The play is described as a modern romantic comedy about marriage and a dog. The plays first performance will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by performances at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. LT students who arrive with their school ID will be admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the school’s box office 30 minutes before the performance begins. The play is directed by faculty member Mike Kuehl with junior LT student Kayla Devereux of La Grange Park as assistant director. Other

FAFSA FOR COLLEGE AID AND LOANS Your first step toward student aid or student loans should be completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Many colleges use the form to evaluate the family’s financial situation and determine the financial aid they will offer the prospective student. Even if you don’t think you qualify for federal aid, it’s wise to use the form. Applications are accepted starting January 1. Be aware that some financial aid from educational institutions, clubs or other organizations is based on financial need, while other awards are based on different criteria, such as academic merit and special talents in music, sports or whatever. Before taking out any sort of loan, every student should apply for every scholarship and grant he or she may be eligible to receive from any and all sources. The best deal in student loans is almost always a federal loan, which offers a lower interest rate and more payment options. But if there is still a funding gap– after exhausting all federal and state sources of aid– it may be necessary to consider a private loan.

Consumers, not New courtroom cameras government, are the best regulators policy is a good first step OUR VIEW
SPRINGFIELD – Why do we license barbers? Or roofers? Or interior decorators? I’ve never quite understood Illinois’ need to create barriers for people to enter certain vocations. The Institute for Justice reports one-third of the jobs in the United States now require state licenses. If most license restrictions were eliminated the institute estimates the employment rate in the United VIEWS States would go up as much as Scott 1 percent, said Lee McGrath, a Reeder lawyer for the group. There are some who would have you believe that government bureaucrats are perched like buzzards waiting for some unsuspecting entrepreneur to come along before they swoop in. The reality is filled with much more intrigue. Regulation often is the product of a chummy relationship between elected officials and those in business who want to cut down on their competition to maximize profits. So every year, a parade of folks in various vocations come to the state Capitol asking for their fields to be licensed and regulated. It usually works like this: Have the state require extensive training for those wanting to enter the field. Exempt everyone already in the field from the new regulations by “grandfathering” them in. By doing this, folks in the profession can create an artificial shortage of “licensed” individuals. This reduces the supply of people who can do the job and enables those still in the field to be paid more. An Institute for Justice study found it costs consumers 15 percent more to receive a service from a licensed vocation than in a state where the same job isn’t licensed. So we are paying more for something that provides us with little to no benefit. But don’t professional licenses help ensure that the public is safer? Insurance companies don’t think so, McGrath said. Liability insurance rates are the same in states that require certain professions to be licensed and in the states that don’t, he said. And let’s face it, consumers are the best regulators, not government. If a roofer, barber, auctioneer, hair braider or other licensed profession does lousy work, they will soon go out of business. If they do good work, they may prosper. Ultimately, the endorsement of consumers carries far more weight than that of government.

To do a good job reporting the news, we’ve got to tell you the full story. When it comes to court cases, we’ve largely been prevented from telling the full story because of restrictions on cameras in courtrooms. Now, there is at least one courtroom in Cook County where news media can request permission to take video and still images – the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building in Chicago. If you’re worried that is a step down a slippery slope toward sensationalized media coverage of every case that goes through the courts, fear not. The trial judge has final authority over whether cameras can be used in any given case. Frankly, we and our colleagues at other media outlets wouldn’t even request the privilege of using cameras in most court cases because they don’t rise to the level of newsworthiness. There’s got to be some compelling reason for us to want that, such as a public official going on trial, or a particularly compelling murder case, such as the Kelli O’Laughlin trial. Speaking of the O’Laughlin case, that’s an instance that demonstrates why cameras in the courtroom could be valuable. Our legal system, though
the best in the world, sometimes makes mistakes. One of the ways we can be sure that it’s working properly is by focusing attention on it. If we could have seen pictures and video of John Wilson Jr. as he sat in the courtroom in Bridgeview, we would’ve had that much more information with which to make up our own minds as to his guilt in the 2011 slaying of O’Laughlin. There’s no reason to suspect anything went awry in the prosecution of Wilson, but plenty of other cases over the years have raised eyebrows. For instance, going back further, think of all the cases tainted by the unethical practices of former Chicago Police Detective Jon Burge, who used torture to extract confessions. Maybe if there had been cameras in the courtroom in some of those cases, Burge’s dirty work might have been exposed sooner. Unfortunately, the Bridgeview court building is not covered by the new policy, so even if John Wilson was standing trial right now, we still couldn’t tell you the complete story. In the meantime, we’ll do what we can to cover cases like these with text only while continuing to press for an expansion of the policy.

We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. So, why are Illinois and other Midwest legislators who brag about what they do to create new jobs, which generally isn’t even near the truth, simply not urging President Barack Obama to authorize the construction of the Keystone Pipeline. Although, she initially thought the class would be boring and put it off, after completing a few projects, she found herself drawn to the repetitive process. After buying her first loom, she continued to take more classes and develop her skills. She joined crafting guilds and met other members, and then began to teach others in turn to keep the tradition alive. In 1993, she met her future

to it,” Atseff said of what drew her to weaving. “The fun is in the design of it.” In the early 2000s, Atseff and Savel started 2-B Weavers as a weaving business in Hinsdale, before moving to Western Springs. The two decided to ditch the storefront in 2007

in favor of running the operation from their homes through their website www.2-bweavers.com. Moving online has allowed them to connect with a broad fan base, as well as cut down on overhead. Online, 2-B Weavers now sells instructional books on weaving and used equipment, as well as providing information about workshops and lectures and, of course, Atseff and Savel’s handmade goods. Atseff now works with a wide array of materials to create her work, including bamboo fibers, which produce a soft and silky fabric that she turns into scarves. For herself, she also creates “paintings” out of small beads, which are sewn together. About four years ago, she began creating chainmail jewelry. The jewelry is created in a similar process to weaving, in that a pattern is developed and repeated again and again. The time-consuming process takes single chain lines and turns them into beautiful – almost ropes – of metal that become bracelets and necklaces. A love of teaching has allowed Atseff to share the tal-
ents she’s developed and keep the tradition going. Her latest lecture was held Tuesday at an Illinois Prairie Weavers Guild meeting at Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave., Lombard. Atseff and Savel also host workshops on a regular basis by appointment. “It’s the teaching I love,” Atseff said. “[Businesses] now sell looms for kids, and the explosion of knitting has gotten a lot of people interested.” While there are easy to follow pattern guides available, Atseff said she prefers to find inspiration in architecture and nature. She had taken inspiration from the bird’s eye view of skyscrapers in Chicago, for example, to create patterns. Another piece takes inspiration from a close-up picture of a butterfly wing. “Architecture works well because it’s geometric, but the result becomes abstract. You wouldn’t look at [the work] and see a building necessarily. “I consider myself an artist,” Atseff said. “Weaving is often considered a craft. I think it’s an art. You have to create it. The beauty comes in the way you interpret it.”

WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world. Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed. But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels. The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday. Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours. The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge. To accompany my sandwich, I almost picked the sweet potato fries, but am glad I opted for the roasted

“It’s a tough loss, but we played hard. And I think our hustle was there the whole time, and that’s what’s important.” Joe Brunner Lyons Township senior in the fourth tied the game at 46-46, but Rafferty broke the tie with a three of his own, and the Red Devils closed out the win with some sharp free-throw shooting down the stretch. “We were right there the last couple minutes. It was a five-point game and then they made eight straight free throws, and when we got in that position we had to start fouling,” Sloan said. “They did a really good job making free throws down the stretch.” Central converted three oneand-one scenarios in the final 1:18 to keep the Lions at bay. “I had a feeling it was going to be down to the wire the whole game,” Brunner said. “It was going to come down to who made free throws and whoever was making the hustle plays, so I knew it was going to be a long, hard-fought game.”

Lyons Township’s Connor Riordan passes the ball Friday during a road game against Hinsdale Central. The Lions lost in a matchup between the top two teams in the West Suburban Silver.
HINSDALE – Joe Brunner had a big second half for Lyons Township’s boys basketball team Friday. The 6-foot-4 senior scored all of his 13 points in the final two quarters, but, unfortunately, it came in a 66-57 loss against Hinsdale Central in a matchup between the top two teams in the West Suburban Silver conference. “It’s a tough loss, but we played hard. And I think our hustle was there the whole time, and that’s what’s important,” Brunner said. “I think we have to do the same thing next time we play and we’ll have a chance to beat them.” Brunner’s solid all-around performance, which included guarding Central standout big man Matt Rafferty, was a continuation of his solid play of late. “The last seven or eight games, Joe’s been playing really well,” LT head coach Tom Sloan said. “The whole Christmas tournament at York, he played just like he did tonight – stepping out and hitting jump shots, battling on the boards.” The loss broke a tie at the top of the conference, with the Lions (12-4 overall, 3-1 WSS) falling one game behind the Red Devils (13-2, 4-0). It was a close contest from start to finish, and Sloan knows his team is still in the thick of the conference race despite the loss. “Obviously when both teams are tied for first place, it’s big for whoever wins and whoever loses,” Sloan said. “But we do get another game with them, so hopefully we take care of our business between now and then. And that game can be for a share of the conference title.” Harrison Niego’s basket put LT ahead 26-25 early in the third quarter and Brunner’s baseline jumper on a Niego feed gave the Lions a 43-38 lead later in the frame, but the Red Devils entered the fourth quarter with a 44-43 edge. 24 Ballard, Friars hang on against Benet By MATT LE CREN msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – Fenwick’s Mike Ballard had just watched Benet erase a 15-point deficit and send the game into overtime. Given his team’s history this season in close games, that didn’t bode well for the Friars. So Ballard, a 6-foot-4 junior forward, opened the overtime by sinking a 3-pointer. Teammate Mike Smith followed with another trey, and the visiting Friars hung on for a thrilling 62-60 victory in Lisle. One night after scoring a career-high 25 points in a win against DePaul Prep, Ballard finished with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds for the Friars (11-4). “When we get in tough positions at the end of the game we haven’t responded great this year,” Ballard said. “[Fenwick coach Rick Malnati] said it was great in the overtime, when they hit some big shots, that we kept our composure and just won the game.” Ballard had missed five straight shots when he sank a 3 to give Fenwick a 47-43 lead with 1:51 left in regulation. Colin Bonnett, who scored Benet’s final seven points of the fourth quarter, answered with a layup and a 17-foot jumper to tie the game with 35 seconds left. Ballard was ready when his number was called on the first possession of overtime. “I was pretty sure I was going to make it,” Ballard said. “I don’t care how many I miss. I still think the next one’s going in, so I’m not afraid to shoot.”
PREP ROUNDUP
St. Joe’s boys basketball gets back on track with two wins SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA St. Joseph’s boys basketball won two games over the weekend after losing 48-43 against DePaul College Prep 48-43 Jan. 6. Glynn Watson poured in 31 points and Jordan Ash scored 21 in a 78-62 win against Leo on Friday. On Saturday, the Chargers beat Kenwood 67-54.
The Friars double dipped with two games Saturday. First, Fenwick beat Marian Central 60-34 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference game. In the nightcap, Fenwick headed to Fremd’s Chicagoland Invitational Showcase and lost 63-62 in overtime against St. Charles North.

Fenwick’s Mike Ballard corrals a rebound Saturday during a road game against Benet. Ballard scored 17 points as the Friars held on for an overtime win against the Redwings. Neither is Bonnett, who did his best to dig the Redwings (9-4) out of a 29-14 third-quarter hole. After sitting out the first 11 minutes of the game because of a coach’s decision, Bonnett erupted to score 23 of his game-high 25 points after intermission. That included a trio of 3-pointers in overtime. “He’s a great player,” Ballard said. “I knew he was capable, but I can’t believe the shots he was hitting at the end. I’ve never seen him do stuff like this and I’m pretty sure he’s been doing that all year.” But even Bonnett could not overcome Fenwick’s great free-throw shooting. The Friars made 17 of 20 foul shots, including 9 of 10 in overtime. Jacob Keller split a pair of free throws after Bonnett’s 3
made it 59-57 with 24 seconds left. Benet had a chance to tie, but Bonnett’s off-balance trey missed and Quinn Fisher sank two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to give Fenwick a five-point lead before Bonnett’s final 3 capped the scoring. “Fenwick’s an excellent basketball team, and I think our kids showed a lot of heart and a lot of toughness down the stretch,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. “There were a couple opportunities where we probably could have folded, but I thought we kept battling back. Unfortunately, we just ran out of time.” Smith led Fenwick with 20 points while Keller added 13 points. Dan Sobolewski scored 12 for Benet.

Defense does the trick for LT girls basketball against Hinsdale Central By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Victoria Swift didn’t need much time to formulate an answer as to what was the key in a 53-25 girls basketball win against Hinsdale Central on Friday. “I gotta say defense because that’s something we’ve worked on,” Swift said. “We have to play defense in order to win this game, and the toughness of our
defense got in their heads. Our offense brought us up, but our defense was just awesome.” Erin Corrigan, Emily Pender and Hope Miller made life tough on Central in the paint, and the Red Devils weren’t able to get going from outside, either. LT’s defense was especially dominant in the fourth quarter, where Gabrielle Rush’s 3-pointer with 3:20 to play – which made it a 50-25 game – were the only points the Red Devils scored in the frame.
“Defense was a key. They didn’t shoot the ball well tonight, and our pressure and our team defense was great,” LT coach Paul Krick said. The Lions led 24-14 at the half, and when Central got to within 28-19 midway through the third quarter, LT closed the frame on a 9-3 run to take control.
